Good morning and welcome to Monza. Hard to believe this is the final

:00:07.:01:17.

European Grand Prix of the season. Every reason to believe this could

:01:18.:01:21.

be yet another Mercedes party. Allan McNish, since Spa, all of the

:01:22.:01:27.

headlines have been about Mercedes, the clash we saw between Lewis and

:01:28.:01:34.

Nico. Have the teams handled it well? Yes. Niki Lauda came out

:01:35.:01:40.

straight away and said it was Nico Rosberg that caused the incident. He

:01:41.:01:47.

put it out on twitter and said, if you were running the team, what

:01:48.:01:50.

would you do, escalating the discussion, if you like. But he came

:01:51.:01:58.

out and publicly apologised. And they have tried to calm it down this

:01:59.:02:03.

weekend so far. You can see from that faces in the press conference,

:02:04.:02:05.

the drivers were not comfortable with each other. After the race in

:02:06.:02:11.

Spa, Nico Rosberg was adamant he had nothing to apologise for. Do you

:02:12.:02:17.

think Lewis will get a bit of a buzz and a kick out of this? He seems to

:02:18.:02:21.

be in a good place yesterday, and at the moment he is perceived like the

:02:22.:02:25.

good guy, and Nick are is the bad guy. Will that give him confidence?

:02:26.:02:35.

Clearly the team have clipped the wings of Nico a bit. And Lewis feels

:02:36.:02:41.

this is the first time the team have been behind him this year. So it has

:02:42.:02:46.

lifted him up, but he must use the extra energy to leapfrog Nico in the

:02:47.:02:53.

fight for qualifying. Whilst Mercedes reprimanded Rosberg, the

:02:54.:02:56.

stewards did not, they did not see anything wrong with the incident on

:02:57.:03:02.

track. The man to capitalise on all was Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, his

:03:03.:03:06.

third win. What a season he is having. Yes, this time last year he

:03:07.:03:13.

was battling for the Toro Rosso seat vacated by Mark Webber, but he has

:03:14.:03:19.

come out as the team leader, with Sebastian Vettel, a 4 times world

:03:20.:03:23.

champion, struggling to catch up with him. The thing that has

:03:24.:03:28.

impressed me about Daniel Ricciardo, he grabs opportunities

:03:29.:03:31.

with both hands and does not let them sleep. -- slip. The gap at the

:03:32.:03:38.

top has increased since the last race. Nico Rosberg 29 points ahead

:03:39.:03:45.

of Lewis Hamilton. Daniel is just 35 points behind Lewis. Fernando Alonso

:03:46.:03:50.

in fourth, Bottas in an impressive fifth. Sebastian Vettel is yet to

:03:51.:03:59.

lead a race, let alone win one. Mercedes still leading the way with

:04:00.:04:05.

411 points. Since the last race, McLaren have moved ahead of Force

:04:06.:04:08.

India but only by two points, and Marussia are ahead of Caterham and

:04:09.:04:15.

Sauber. Ben Edwards and Tony Dodgers in the commentary box. Incredible to

:04:16.:04:22.

believe this is the last European race of the season, but what a place

:04:23.:04:29.

to finish. Yes. It is 43 years today since Peter Gethin won the closest

:04:30.:04:35.

ever Formula One race by .01 of a second. So many memories here. A

:04:36.:04:40.

fabulous place to come. I remember coming here for the first time in

:04:41.:04:43.

the 80s and I wanted to walk around the track, it was almost dark, but

:04:44.:04:50.

by the time I got to the end of the lab you could sense the history and

:04:51.:04:54.

atmosphere. There is the old banking they last used in 1961. You feel the

:04:55.:05:01.

ghosts almost. A lot to look forward to. We will soon be getting into the

:05:02.:05:06.

first 90 minutes session of the weekend. We have had some clues from

:05:07.:05:12.

Spa, but what are we expecting here? The man's a bit of a car here? A bit

:05:13.:05:20.

different, but quite similar to Spa -- does it do manned a different

:05:21.:05:25.

car, here? It is all about straight-line speed and traction out

:05:26.:05:29.

of the corners. We are expecting the highest top speeds of any circuit so

:05:30.:05:33.

far this year. Up to perhaps 220 mph. The pit lane is open, and we

:05:34.:05:41.

will head in there and report from you, so let's throw up to Ben and

:05:42.:05:46.

Tony. RADIO: Showing as a slight headwind at the moment. Opposite of

:05:47.:05:52.

what we are expecting, but we are expecting it to swap around. Chak

:05:53.:05:59.

temperature 23. COMMENTATOR: Little weather report to start proceedings

:06:00.:06:03.

at Monza. It is a dry track and the forecast is good for most of the

:06:04.:06:06.

weekend, which will encourage the likes of Williams in particular.

:06:07.:06:10.

Tony, coming into this Grand Prix, all the talk about Mercedes and what

:06:11.:06:15.

happened last time out at Spa. Also quite a lot of chat about whether

:06:16.:06:18.

Williams could have a real chance of challenging Mercedes. If it was

:06:19.:06:22.

going to be anywhere, it would probably be Monza. I agree. Last

:06:23.:06:27.

time at Spa we had the second sector which was all about downforce. There

:06:28.:06:34.

were some differences in the setup, whereas everybody here will be in a

:06:35.:06:38.

low downforce configuration. Williams has fantastic top speed,

:06:39.:06:40.

and you would expect this to be their best chance. They were a

:06:41.:06:45.

little bit messed up by the rain in qualifying in Spa. Their car not

:06:46.:06:49.

working particularly well on the intermediate. This weekend generally

:06:50.:06:55.

looks as though it will be dry. A quick reminder, I will let people

:06:56.:06:59.

know that we have a few different drivers out in this first session.

:07:00.:07:04.

It is the opportunity for teams to put in the development drivers, and

:07:05.:07:07.

a couple are doing that. At Lotus we have Charles Pic driving in place of

:07:08.:07:15.

Romain Grosjean. And the graphic there, just showing us how many

:07:16.:07:20.

elements of the power unit he has used throughout the course of the

:07:21.:07:24.

year so far, engine referring to the V6, the turbochargers, used four of

:07:25.:07:31.

those, MG UK is the unit that generates kinetic energy

:07:32.:07:37.

underbraking. MG you -H sits next to the turbo, generating electric

:07:38.:07:41.

power. And a little graphic showing us all the elements, which shows us

:07:42.:07:46.

that many teams are now getting to the limit. -- MGU-H. You are allowed

:07:47.:07:54.

five of those throughout the course of the year, and once you use your

:07:55.:07:58.

sixth of any of those items, whether it is the internal combustion engine

:07:59.:08:03.

or the turbo, at the next race you get a ten Grid Place penalty. We are

:08:04.:08:08.

in that region now where we will see those penalties affecting our grids.

:08:09.:08:14.

Yes, used five of the internal combustion engine part of it. One of

:08:15.:08:18.

the key point is when you look at who has used what, Mercedes are in

:08:19.:08:22.

good shape relative to Renault, and Ferrari. So possibly it will not

:08:23.:08:30.

impact at the very top. I agree. Sebastian Vettel is not so well off,

:08:31.:08:35.

not featuring so strongly. Daniel Ricciardo third in the points.

:08:36.:08:40.

Daniel Ricciardo has been the biggest points scorer of the last

:08:41.:08:44.

six grams pre-, which is amazing. He has had three victories, of course.

:08:45.:08:55.

-- the last three Grands Prix. People were starting to say to him,

:08:56.:09:00.

have we reached the stage where you should be prioritised over Sebastian

:09:01.:09:04.

Vettel in the team because you have an outside chance? He said if it was

:09:05.:09:09.

the same situation close to the end of the season then yes, but somebody

:09:10.:09:14.

else said, hang on, you are within 35 points of Nico Rosberg, you

:09:15.:09:19.

really have a chance. Surely they should be doing something. He said,

:09:20.:09:23.

that sounds good, I will write that down. It is a very good point.

:09:24.:09:30.

Kobayashi back at Caterham but not for this particular session. He is

:09:31.:09:34.

not in overalls because Roberto Merhi is getting his first-ever

:09:35.:09:37.

opportunity to drive a Formula One car. Interesting, he is a

:09:38.:09:42.

23-year-old Spaniard and he has a pretty good CV. Currently racing in

:09:43.:09:47.

the Renault 3.5 championship. Looking back over his CV, he has

:09:48.:09:50.

raced against Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas before, they were in

:09:51.:09:56.

Formula Renault together in 2008. In the Euro cup, Bottas was champion,

:09:57.:10:02.

Ricciardo was second, and Merhi was fourth. It has taken him a bit

:10:03.:10:09.

longer to make the jump. He was the 2011 FIA champion. He was, and that

:10:10.:10:17.

was a good win for him. He was racing Daniel Jonker Deller, who we

:10:18.:10:22.

see for Force India. He had a couple of years that were not so good in

:10:23.:10:26.

the DTM, because he was a Mercedes affiliated driver. He is running

:10:27.:10:32.

second in the Renault 3.5 series, he has won two of the last three races.

:10:33.:10:38.

He definitely deserves an opportunity. Lots of green paint all

:10:39.:10:44.

over the back of the Force India, as they try to get an idea of airflow.

:10:45.:10:49.

Alexander Rossi not driving the Marussia this morning. There was a

:10:50.:10:55.

question mark as to whether he would be up this morning, but confirmation

:10:56.:10:59.

that Max Chilton is doing all of the sessions, and according to Max,

:11:00.:11:04.

doing all of the remaining races. So whatever the kitchen contract will

:11:05.:11:07.

proceedings was at Spa, it seems to have been smoothed over -- whatever

:11:08.:11:18.

the glitch in the contract. Ido van der doing another session. I believe

:11:19.:11:26.

he is only doing the first 30 minutes, so Sergio Perez will be

:11:27.:11:30.

taking over during the session, and that is something allowed this year

:11:31.:11:35.

with this slightly different format. RADIO: Getting very hot on my right

:11:36.:11:44.

wrist, a bit unusual. Copy. If you go to brightness seven, we will try

:11:45.:11:50.

the other radio. All of the electronics packed around the

:11:51.:11:55.

driver. New run-off on Parabolica. It is something that has been

:11:56.:11:58.

causing a bit of controversy, because drivers love

:11:59.:12:02.

causing a bit of controversy, but if you ran wide coming through

:12:03.:12:05.

Parabolica, you were in trouble. Now it looks as though they have a bit

:12:06.:12:09.

of leeway. Yes, those with long memories will recall Derek Warwick

:12:10.:12:14.

having an enormous accident on the outside of Parabolica when he ran

:12:15.:12:20.

wide. It is a safety thing. Purists say we don't want that, we want it

:12:21.:12:24.

to be a test, but I still think it is a test. You have the painted

:12:25.:12:30.

Astroturf on the exit. Just look at this, as he comes through

:12:31.:12:33.

Parabolica, a big strip of tarmac on the outside, and the Astroturf, bit

:12:34.:12:37.

of extra Astroturf they have put on the outside. But take a look at last

:12:38.:12:43.

year. Lewis Hamilton actually ran wide in qualifying yesterday, and we

:12:44.:12:51.

can look at where he goes wide. Relatively early, just puts a wheel

:12:52.:12:55.

onto the gravel, and it cost him any chance. As a result he did a little

:12:56.:12:59.

bit of damage to the car and did not get through into the final part of

:13:00.:13:04.

qualifying last year. Looking at whether run-off is, it looks as

:13:05.:13:07.

though he probably would have got away with it. Yes, unless the

:13:08.:13:11.

Astroturf spat him back across to the inside. It all depends how much

:13:12.:13:17.

loading is on the car. We will see when somebody does it for the first

:13:18.:13:22.

time. It will be interesting. So everybody has done their

:13:23.:13:25.

installation lap, one lap that makes sure all the systems are working. As

:13:26.:13:30.

we heard from Rosberg, a little concern about heat in the car, but

:13:31.:13:33.

hopefully that can be sorted. We can look at his power unit elements

:13:34.:13:41.

used. With seven to go, that is pretty good. They will be relatively

:13:42.:13:47.

happy. They can put an engine back in from earlier in the year that

:13:48.:13:50.

they have used, as long as none of the seals have been broken, and they

:13:51.:13:54.

do switch and swap them around a bit. They will want a relatively

:13:55.:13:58.

fresh engine, and quite if you put a fresh engine in force bar, which is

:13:59.:14:03.

carried on to this weekend dash macro quite -- quite a few put in a

:14:04.:14:15.

fresh engine for Spa. We should see Sergio Peres later? Yes, he is

:14:16.:14:20.

sitting on the pit wall at the moment. I did a bit of sign language

:14:21.:14:24.

with him and he says he will be in later in the session. I anticipate

:14:25.:14:29.

it will be after 30 minutes. In that first 30 minutes the drivers get an

:14:30.:14:33.

extra free set of tyres that they have to give back. So it would only

:14:34.:14:38.

lose Sergio Perez 30 minutes of track time as opposed to a set of

:14:39.:14:46.

tyres for the rest of the weekend. He is pretty calm on the pit wall.

:14:47.:14:57.

What is your opinion of the Parabolica, your view that it had

:14:58.:15:02.

been emasculated is a bit different? Anybody going around the

:15:03.:15:07.

corner at 200 mph, floating the car in with minimal downforce, having

:15:08.:15:14.

the surge of adrenaline as you can feel it kicking away from you, they

:15:15.:15:18.

are probably the right people to ask. Anybody who hasn't had the

:15:19.:15:23.

feeling, it's difficult to understand what it's like but in my

:15:24.:15:27.

opinion, it is a safety feature and will not change the dynamic of the

:15:28.:15:30.

circuit, all the corner, or the racing. The important thing is that

:15:31.:15:36.

they have put in some extra margin for error at the middle corner where

:15:37.:15:40.

it is most dangerous but they have put a long curve on the exit and

:15:41.:15:45.

some Astroturf, so you cannot gain a long-term advantage out of it. We

:15:46.:15:49.

will see drivers trying to push the limit as they are designed to do.

:15:50.:15:54.

Ultimately my first feeling walking around yesterday with Felipe Massa,

:15:55.:16:00.

is opinion is that it was a positive change for safety, not a negative

:16:01.:16:05.

change for racing. We will get some more comment from the drivers as we

:16:06.:16:09.

go through the weekend. A pause in proceedings while the cars are

:16:10.:16:15.

checked over. We have already spoken about the drama at Spa between

:16:16.:16:19.

Rosberg and Hamilton, whom he clipped, and coming away from Spa

:16:20.:16:23.

with a 29 points championship advantage. Mercedes bosses were not

:16:24.:16:30.

happy about what went on, very outspoken and they were determined

:16:31.:16:34.

that it won't happen again. Let's see what Toto Wolff said yesterday

:16:35.:16:37.

to James Allen when he was speaking on radio five. You know, when you

:16:38.:16:49.

are managing a team, it is very important to keep it balanced. First

:16:50.:16:58.

of all, the penalties, the sanctions we have been implemented in are

:16:59.:17:02.

likely to stay in the team because it isn't fair towards the drivers to

:17:03.:17:09.

discuss it in public. We have made it very clear that this is an

:17:10.:17:15.

unacceptable scenario for this, for both of them. We don't want this to

:17:16.:17:20.

happen again and the consequences are very easy. If we are not able to

:17:21.:17:24.

manage the two of them following the Mercedes-Benz racing spirit, then we

:17:25.:17:30.

need to admit that, and take decisions and consequences, you

:17:31.:17:34.

know, having a different line-up probably. A different line-up,

:17:35.:17:41.

Tony, a very interesting comment, Toto Wolff saying that if they can't

:17:42.:17:46.

behave, they may change the Mercedes line-up. How seriously can we take

:17:47.:17:51.

it? Not very, actually! I think it's a bit strong. I can understand what

:17:52.:17:56.

he's saying. You have to have a nurturing atmosphere possibly

:17:57.:18:00.

towards Lewis in that scenario because he feels wronged, Nico took

:18:01.:18:05.

him out and he gained in the championship, which some people

:18:06.:18:08.

would say is cleanly wrong. Nico has been fortunate that four, five races

:18:09.:18:15.

ago they would have investigated and given him a drive-through penalty,

:18:16.:18:18.

but Silverstone, everybody got together and said that we want to be

:18:19.:18:24.

able to race, we want to go for the marginal moves and we don't want

:18:25.:18:28.

everything investigated, so the FIA said OK, we'll stand back and let

:18:29.:18:34.

you get on with it. Prior to that, I'm sure he would have been

:18:35.:18:37.

investigated and probably penalised, but the FIA said you can't have it

:18:38.:18:42.

both ways. So he has been fortunate. He caused the accident. I

:18:43.:18:48.

don't think it was malicious. But I admire Nicky louder and Toto Wolff

:18:49.:18:51.

for saying what they think. They were criticised by Max Mosley who

:18:52.:18:57.

said they should keep out of the team -- Nicky louder. It is such a

:18:58.:19:02.

team led sport, I admire them for saying what they think. We have

:19:03.:19:07.

discussed this quite a lot, on the chequered flag pod cast which you

:19:08.:19:16.

can download, Toto Wolff also said that the fans want Mercedes to keep

:19:17.:19:21.

allowing them to race, they don't want team orders assumed, and that's

:19:22.:19:25.

what they are planning to do. It is, it was a risky strategy, putting

:19:26.:19:31.

it out there, in my opinion, something that actually flames the

:19:32.:19:35.

fire little bit. Because ultimately it brought the whole thing back into

:19:36.:19:39.

the public eye. It was already there but it heightened it by saying, if

:19:40.:19:44.

you were the team manager, what would you do? Clearly some funny

:19:45.:19:47.

comments came into it. The one that Toto said, they should make Nico

:19:48.:19:52.

Rosberg go on a cycling Toto said, they should make Nico

:19:53.:19:56.

him. Toto Wolff fell off his bike and broke four bones in his body.

:19:57.:20:02.

Having said that, they put it out there, they have to race, but they

:20:03.:20:06.

have two control things because clearly they cannot keep on having

:20:07.:20:11.

the fastest car and losing victories because of two fighting team-mates.

:20:12.:20:15.

From the manufacturer 's point of view, they manufactured car wins the

:20:16.:20:20.

Grand Prix and after that, which one of the siblings wins the races and

:20:21.:20:25.

the championship, that's down to them. If it is detrimental, they may

:20:26.:20:29.

have to put the strong hand onto them. In this situation I can see

:20:30.:20:35.

this bubbling over for the rest of the season, but whether it will

:20:36.:20:38.

bubble over, that remains to be seen. It is all good fun at the

:20:39.:20:43.

moment, causing a lot of gossip in the paddock. We saw Max Chilton

:20:44.:20:47.

getting into a bit of a moment but he is the first man to complete

:20:48.:20:50.

getting into a bit of a moment but flying lap, one

:20:51.:20:54.

getting into a bit of a moment but first time lap of anybody so far.

:20:55.:21:01.

Roberto Merhi, he has the abbreviation for a new Formula One

:21:02.:21:05.

driver. The 23-year-old Spanish driver. There he is. He has been

:21:06.:21:09.

racing in the DTM for the last couple of years. This year he is

:21:10.:21:14.

back in the single seat cars, in the Renault series, one of the two

:21:15.:21:20.

levels below Grand Prix racing. You have GP two, just below Formula One.

:21:21.:21:27.

All of the cars are identical and that's what he's competing in at the

:21:28.:21:31.

moment. In some ways, in relative terms they have more downforce to

:21:32.:21:35.

the amount of power they have to the Formula One cars. He has possibly

:21:36.:21:41.

more grip and power, now he has more power than grip, especially with the

:21:42.:21:45.

changes this year. Especially here because they have such a low

:21:46.:21:49.

downforce configuration, it's all about being late on the brakes, and

:21:50.:21:56.

this is a difficult track for him to make his Formula One debut. Simply

:21:57.:21:59.

because of the reasons we've explained, you have to have

:22:00.:22:02.

confidence on the brakes. We've said that going forwards, he may get a

:22:03.:22:09.

chance in Singapore. Well, how diametrically opposed can that be?

:22:10.:22:13.

Two of the most difficult circuits, for different reasons, so good luck

:22:14.:22:18.

to him! The shortest race of the year, to the longest. And the most

:22:19.:22:24.

physical. Roberto Merhi, so far, so good. Don't forget you can send us

:22:25.:22:29.

your thoughts and questions, you can contact us on Twitter and the BBC

:22:30.:22:33.

sport Facebook page. Great to have your comments coming in. Paul

:22:34.:22:37.

McGuinness asks what is our best memory of Monza, 2006 standing out

:22:38.:22:46.

for him, with Schumacher winning. He has five winners here. Most

:22:47.:22:51.

important from his point of view and in some ways the love affair with

:22:52.:22:56.

the tifosi began with him in 2006, winning for Ferrari here. It was not

:22:57.:23:01.

his first win with the team but it was their first win in seven years

:23:02.:23:04.

here because the previous one had been in 1988, Gerhard Berger.

:23:05.:23:11.

Michael Schumacher put himself into the hearts of the tifosi that year.

:23:12.:23:15.

It helped but I don't think they took to him in the same way they

:23:16.:23:21.

took to Jill Villeneuve. His comeback after the accident in the

:23:22.:23:30.

70s, Lauda, racing with his balaclava caked in blood, they went

:23:31.:23:34.

for that. We have to keep an eye on this, when you have two Mercedes

:23:35.:23:38.

cars on the track sharing the same piece of road, it's very

:23:39.:23:45.

interesting! RADIO: You are pressing the DRS button to early. And you

:23:46.:23:52.

need to be less aggressive on the brake pedal, and also the throttle.

:23:53.:23:56.

You have too much wheel spin on the spot. White there you go, too

:23:57.:24:00.

aggressive on the brakes, he is used to more downforce, and he is being

:24:01.:24:04.

too aggressive on the fourth because he's used to more horsepower. We are

:24:05.:24:11.

watching Hamilton and Rosberg. Tell us what Roberto Merhi is having to

:24:12.:24:15.

learn right now. He knows the circuit, he has been here before but

:24:16.:24:25.

he's used to a car that has less torque. With these tyres, it is easy

:24:26.:24:31.

to overload them in the wheel spin situation, and with the extra torque

:24:32.:24:35.

you can like them are pretty easily and that is not good for the life of

:24:36.:24:41.

the tyres. Giving him some guidance so he can get that under control, so

:24:42.:24:45.

he can work out what is going to work in the first session for him.

:24:46.:24:51.

Coming back to Merhi, I watched him in European Formula Three when he

:24:52.:24:55.

won the championship, he is very fast and committed and I think you

:24:56.:24:59.

are going to see him picking up the Caterham and firing it around, maybe

:25:00.:25:04.

a bit too much. They were the first comments from the team, come back

:25:05.:25:09.

and try and be smooth -- throwing it around. Lets hope he

:25:10.:25:13.

and try and be smooth -- throwing it board. Alonso has just gone through.

:25:14.:25:17.

He has a great record here with Ferrari, winning in 2010 in his

:25:18.:25:21.

first year with the Ferrari, winning in 2010 in his

:25:22.:25:24.

been on the podium every time he has driven for Ferrari including last

:25:25.:25:28.

year when he finished on the podium taking that great selfie on his

:25:29.:25:34.

camera with the fans below. He has a good relationship with the circuit,

:25:35.:25:37.

but Ferrari are always expected to go well here, Tony. The problem is

:25:38.:25:42.

that this year it is going to be difficult for him to get another

:25:43.:25:47.

podium. I think his performance level at Spa was higher than

:25:48.:25:51.

everybody expected. He was saying yesterday, he hopes he might be able

:25:52.:25:55.

to do it but he is acknowledging the fact that Mercedes engined cars,

:25:56.:26:00.

with such low downforce, will be difficult to beat here. You can be

:26:01.:26:05.

sure he will go for it, as always. Rumours abound about the Ferrari

:26:06.:26:10.

boss at the moment. We expect him to be here this weekend, but there are

:26:11.:26:14.

some rumours he may be leaving Ferrari, talk that he has a new post

:26:15.:26:19.

elsewhere but it is room at the moment. RADIO: The RS is not

:26:20.:26:29.

working. -- DRS. Looe understood. That is what free practice is all

:26:30.:26:35.

about. Daniel Ricciardo, a three-time race winner. Marcus

:26:36.:26:39.

Ericsson having a lock-up, a classic into the first chicane. Just about

:26:40.:26:42.

managing to get around the corner without taking to the escape road.

:26:43.:26:47.

We will see plenty more of that. A question from Stewart, if the power

:26:48.:26:52.

units we are talking about, if they are used, to what extent can they be

:26:53.:26:57.

repaired when it is a new unit? Basically they are not allowed to do

:26:58.:27:01.

any internal work on the engines at all. If they take out the engine and

:27:02.:27:06.

lose it later -- use it later in the season, but the engines are sealed

:27:07.:27:12.

and the scrutineers will know if anybody has done any internal work

:27:13.:27:16.

and that will count as a new power unit. Everything has to be as it has

:27:17.:27:22.

been used already, otherwise you straight switch to something else.

:27:23.:27:30.

The limit on the engines, brought in a few years ago. Five entries this

:27:31.:27:37.

year. RADIO: We can see that the DRS is not working. Keep going. A

:27:38.:27:44.

problem for Sebastian Vettel, he has no DRS operating. Interesting with

:27:45.:27:46.

Vettel, as he goes through the Parabolica, a new chassis for him

:27:47.:27:53.

this weekend. He has already had one new chassis and he has gone on to a

:27:54.:27:57.

second new one. Red Bull are slightly flummoxed by his lack of

:27:58.:28:02.

pace I think at Spa, the car was not as quick as Ricciardo's apparently.

:28:03.:28:07.

They said that it was a fairly routine change. Christian Horner

:28:08.:28:11.

keeping an eye on things. Looking at the early speed track figures, 343,

:28:12.:28:16.

already slightly above what we saw here last year but not by a dramatic

:28:17.:28:21.

margin. 340 was the top speed last year. We are still picking up speed

:28:22.:28:26.

and they will be getting into a bit more of a towing situation where

:28:27.:28:29.

they can pick up a few more miles per hour. Jenson Button was

:28:30.:28:39.

predicting 355. In 2005, one Pablo Montoya in the car that year doing

:28:40.:28:45.

372, which is something like 233 mph, with 900 horsepower! Montoya is

:28:46.:28:52.

here this weekend, he was in the paddock over the weekend. Mario

:28:53.:28:56.

Andretti is here, so we had a couple of visitors from the United States.

:28:57.:29:01.

Valtteri Bottas, one to watch this weekend. Williams are hopeful of

:29:02.:29:04.

some good performances and he has been getting on the podium regularly

:29:05.:29:08.

in recent events, the Finnish driver. Our BBC coverage this

:29:09.:29:12.

weekend, you will get to learn more about him. Tom Clarkson when

:29:13.:29:17.

shooting with him last weekend and we will have the coverage for you on

:29:18.:29:21.

the Formula One broadcast over the course of the weekend. Clay pigeon

:29:22.:29:25.

shooting, rather than going hunting anywhere! Clay pigeon shooting has

:29:26.:29:30.

become a bit of a favourite past time for Bottas, something he has

:29:31.:29:35.

taken up over the last few years. On board with Juncadella

:29:36.:29:39.

development driver for Force India. This was a moment ago, into

:29:40.:29:44.

development driver for Force India. little bit too late. Let's see if

:29:45.:29:49.

Kimi Raikkonen did the same. Yet, exactly the same. Coming off the

:29:50.:29:52.

brakes almost instantaneously because these tyres have to last for

:29:53.:29:57.

the entire first session. That's the way the team is like to run it. It

:29:58.:30:02.

is better to go wide, and we can see Alonso doing that, than it is to

:30:03.:30:06.

keep the tyres locked up. Currently Kevin Magnussen is the fastest on

:30:07.:30:08.

the track. Button showing well for McLaren as

:30:09.:30:22.

well. Looking at Alex worked there, still very involved at Williams.

:30:23.:30:28.

Bottas seventh, Alonzo macro eighth, Raikkonen currently ninth, and 10th

:30:29.:30:36.

fastest is Hulkenberg. Jenson Button, Tony, what is going on here?

:30:37.:30:42.

RADIO: You can use Diarra is everywhere now, just use it in the

:30:43.:30:52.

correct places -- you can use DRS. Will Jenson Button still be at

:30:53.:30:56.

McLaren next year? They have been quite vocal in saying they are

:30:57.:31:00.

definitely trying to go after a top driver, may be that all or Alonzo.

:31:01.:31:10.

Romain yesterday was having a bit of mischief and saying he saw Fernando

:31:11.:31:21.

Alonso as key to the drivers market. But only last week in the German

:31:22.:31:26.

media there was a story that Fernando has a release clause, they

:31:27.:31:30.

printed that if he was not within 25 points of the championship lead by

:31:31.:31:36.

September one there was a release clause. Who knows if that is real or

:31:37.:31:41.

not, but people who have seen Fernando's contract say it is very

:31:42.:31:47.

Fernando favourable. Big sideways moment for Hamilton, interesting to

:31:48.:31:51.

watch, he is really on the limit. So if that is the case, it really does

:31:52.:31:55.

through the driver market open. Sebastian Vettel, might he go to

:31:56.:32:01.

Ferrari? The situation he has had this year at Red Bull, with the

:32:02.:32:07.

speed of Ricciardo, if he stays another year and it keeps happening,

:32:08.:32:12.

his market value has gone. So does he need to get out of there now? And

:32:13.:32:20.

then there is this whole question of the finances of some of the back of

:32:21.:32:24.

the grid teams, and if they really are in such bad shape, could we

:32:25.:32:28.

possibly have three cars from the major teams? And if that happens it

:32:29.:32:34.

really does throw it open. A lot is going on that is not obvious. Yes,

:32:35.:32:39.

three-car teams, that is something that has been discussed in the past.

:32:40.:32:44.

As one of your erudite colleagues said to me earlier, imagine a 3 car

:32:45.:32:48.

Mercedes team with Hamilton, Rosberg and Fernando Alonso. That is a bit

:32:49.:32:54.

eye watering as a prospect, isn't it? A fair bit of overseer, that

:32:55.:32:58.

means the back end was moving around quite a lot

:32:59.:33:01.

means the back end was moving around through the Ascari chicane. Alan, in

:33:02.:33:06.

terms of car balance, what do you really want from your car for being

:33:07.:33:13.

fast at Monza? You need consistency. You need that delicate and right

:33:14.:33:19.

balance between a rear that is stable on the high-speed entries,

:33:20.:33:22.

because you are breaking and turning quite a lot of the time, especially

:33:23.:33:28.

into Ascari, Parabolica, but you also need a sharp front-end. Some of

:33:29.:33:31.

those corners are quite long, therefore you need the front

:33:32.:33:36.

steering to be reactive to allow you to pivot the car and get back onto

:33:37.:33:40.

the throttle. It is a delicate balance. You are driving a bit like

:33:41.:33:45.

in the wet when you are on your fingertips all the time, when you

:33:46.:33:50.

hit the brake pedal hard and you have five G pulling into some of

:33:51.:33:54.

them but then after that you are leading off very quickly, much

:33:55.:33:57.

earlier than you would do normally, and trying to tease the steering as

:33:58.:34:02.

you run into the corner. It is a finite balance, one that is tricky,

:34:03.:34:06.

but once you get it it is beautiful round here, you float through the

:34:07.:34:10.

corners. Lovely description, thank you. Hamilton is currently fastest.

:34:11.:34:18.

Those McLaren cars are close behind. And Magnusson is for. McLaren have

:34:19.:34:25.

been working hard to lose some of the track they have got on the car.

:34:26.:34:28.

They know they have been lacking downforce but that should not be a

:34:29.:34:31.

problem here, a lack of downforce is what you want here. Encouraging

:34:32.:34:37.

first few laps for McLaren. Yes, it looks better. They both raced very

:34:38.:34:45.

hard in Spa. You were asking about Jenson, I think the performance

:34:46.:34:49.

level is telling. You have got a very good new rookie coming in, and

:34:50.:34:53.

Jenson with his experience, I don't see a problem with that line-up,

:34:54.:34:58.

favourable aspects to both. That's a good point, it is a strong line-up

:34:59.:35:02.

at the moment. Of course Magnusson lost out on sixth place at Spa. He

:35:03.:35:07.

fought hard with Fernando Alonso. But after the race the penalty was

:35:08.:35:10.

imposed because he squeezed him onto the grass on the way. When I looked

:35:11.:35:20.

at it again after the race, I could feel it was probably right that he

:35:21.:35:25.

got some sort of penalty. Yes, going back to the FIA intervening, that is

:35:26.:35:31.

the stance they take. Something is dangerous, being forced onto the

:35:32.:35:36.

grass at 200 mph, that is different. But what they deemed a racing

:35:37.:35:41.

incident they will leave alone. That is the way we will see them reacting

:35:42.:35:46.

in the future. It is a good point, because the FIA are taking a less

:35:47.:35:48.

active role in those little incidents. It was quite

:35:49.:35:52.

controversial in the case of Rosberg and Hamilton because Hamilton came

:35:53.:35:57.

out so badly in terms of points. But you actually asked the question of

:35:58.:36:00.

Sebastian Vettel yesterday, and let's see what he had to say. We

:36:01.:36:06.

will listen in a second about what Sebastian Vettel had to say but I

:36:07.:36:09.

know he was quite interesting, and quite firm on it. Wait a second and

:36:10.:36:14.

we will listen to what he had to say. We have a slight pause in

:36:15.:36:18.

proceedings because we have done the first half-hour, and those tyres

:36:19.:36:23.

they used in the first half-hour must be taken off the cards.

:36:24.:36:28.

Fernando Alonso looking at the power units used, they are in pretty good

:36:29.:36:34.

shape, free on most sections. Reliability has been a strong factor

:36:35.:36:38.

for Ferrari, even if their pace has been down. So, you asked Sebastian

:36:39.:36:44.

Vettel whether the FIA should have intervened, let's see what he had to

:36:45.:36:48.

say. No, actually I'm very happy that there was not any action taken.

:36:49.:36:55.

Like I said, in my point of view, maybe I am not talented enough to

:36:56.:36:59.

time perfectly right to punch somebody, it is something I need to

:37:00.:37:05.

learn. But might point of view is that you get it wrong more often

:37:06.:37:11.

than you get it right -- puncture. I am not too interested in expanding

:37:12.:37:14.

my talent in that direction. I think it is good they did not take any

:37:15.:37:21.

decision. I think it was then funny to see that the team decided to take

:37:22.:37:24.

some decisions in terms of penalties and so on. So yeah, I think it is

:37:25.:37:32.

good to let others race. If we get it completely wrong we need to be

:37:33.:37:36.

penalised, because there needs to be a clear line that you draw. But in

:37:37.:37:45.

that case, from Lewis's point of view, obviously he did not finish,

:37:46.:37:52.

so, yeah, sorry. We managed to blank out a little word that he used in

:37:53.:37:57.

that. Interesting comments from Sebastien, and he felt the FIA were

:37:58.:38:00.

right not to intervene. Looking at the banked track, it has actually

:38:01.:38:06.

been resurfaced. They don't use it except for a rally, I believe. It is

:38:07.:38:14.

not used for racing as such. In fact it was only ever used for times for

:38:15.:38:18.

Grand Prix racing. Everybody gets very excited about the banking but

:38:19.:38:23.

it was not used the huge amount. There was a banked section prewar

:38:24.:38:25.

but it was not used all There was a banked section prewar

:38:26.:38:31.

cards. It was a real car breaker. You can see how steep the banking

:38:32.:38:36.

is, really incredibly steep. It destroyed suspensions, didn't it? It

:38:37.:38:42.

did. There was also a problem if somebody dropped any oil, and you

:38:43.:38:48.

got out of shape on the oil, two guys went straight through and into

:38:49.:38:53.

the trees. That was an issue. I preferred it when the weeds were

:38:54.:38:56.

growing up through it and it all looked a bit historic. Makes you

:38:57.:39:03.

think of Brooklands in the UK. There are just little chunks to show us

:39:04.:39:08.

what it was like. Fascinating place, but a very different era. Alan, you

:39:09.:39:14.

have done it huge amount of testing here over the years, and you told me

:39:15.:39:17.

yesterday that you add one point tested for Audi and you did not use

:39:18.:39:25.

the first chicane. You took it flat out, that must have been something?

:39:26.:39:29.

I thought you were going to say I was old enough to have raced on the

:39:30.:39:39.

banking. For the tyres, speed, and centrifugal force, we came here, and

:39:40.:39:43.

went straight down past the start finish, instead of going through the

:39:44.:39:48.

first year chicane, we kept going in to curve the ground at about 340 K

:39:49.:39:57.

pH. I can tell you what your focus is, it focuses your attention. It

:39:58.:40:01.

really did focus the attention as you were coming through that corner.

:40:02.:40:06.

But the place itself is so evocative, with the old banking.

:40:07.:40:09.

Even when you are testing here on your own, quite a few people come

:40:10.:40:16.

into the grandstands, cheering. Such an enthusiastic city for motorsport,

:40:17.:40:20.

never mind the actual park itself. It is a fascinating place. Looking

:40:21.:40:27.

at the rear wheel of the Ferrari. Some interesting shaping on the rear

:40:28.:40:31.

flap. Delighted to say that joining us from the pit wall is the team

:40:32.:40:35.

principal for Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner. Good morning.

:40:36.:40:39.

Great to have you with us. Lots to talk about. Many congratulations for

:40:40.:40:46.

the victory at Spa. Daniel Ricciardo now top points scorer in the last

:40:47.:40:53.

six races. You have won races at Montreal and Spa, which are no Tory

:40:54.:40:57.

is power circuits. How has that all come about? It just goes to show how

:40:58.:41:02.

little we know, really. Theoretically they are the circuits

:41:03.:41:09.

that should be weakest -- notorious power circuits. It has been quite

:41:10.:41:16.

remarkable. Obviously it has delayed a little bit to a certain extent on

:41:17.:41:20.

Mercedes not having perfect weekend and we managed to capitalise. So

:41:21.:41:24.

tell us what the situation is coming into Monza, another notorious power

:41:25.:41:29.

track, do you see an opportunity to challenge again? If I was a logical

:41:30.:41:34.

person I would say no, because if you look at our straight line

:41:35.:41:40.

speeds, there is at least a ten to 12 kilometre delta. The Mercedes

:41:41.:41:44.

powered cars theoretically will be very quick. But as we have seen this

:41:45.:41:49.

year, anything can happen, and we want to make sure we are in a

:41:50.:41:53.

position to capitalise if it does. Fernando Alonso quite high on the

:41:54.:41:57.

speed figures, have Ferrari found more speed from somewhere? It is

:41:58.:42:02.

interesting, every Friday morning we turn up and they look competitive

:42:03.:42:05.

but then they fade away in the rest of the weekend. They are looking

:42:06.:42:09.

pretty racy and some of the speed traps. So it is going to be

:42:10.:42:15.

interesting, they will be pushing hard on their home race. I am the

:42:16.:42:22.

high, if you turn around. You different front wings on both cars

:42:23.:42:26.

-- I am a hind you. Other revisions you have made this

:42:27.:42:34.

weekend to combat the straight line speed? Just looking at different

:42:35.:42:43.

options, different wings setups than we had in Spa, although we were

:42:44.:42:47.

pretty low in downforce. Barring taking them off, we cannot go much

:42:48.:42:53.

lower. I thought you were pretty skinny in Spa, but I am sure you

:42:54.:42:57.

will try to do something. You seem to develop aerodynamics through the

:42:58.:43:02.

course of the weekend. Very much so. In the first half hour we put some

:43:03.:43:05.

telemetry on the cars to have a look at what is going on with the flow

:43:06.:43:09.

patterns. We are constantly developing, that is Formula One. We

:43:10.:43:14.

will keep pushing the boundaries. Wanted to ask you quickly, we

:43:15.:43:18.

believe Sebastian Vettel has a new chassis this weekend, is that

:43:19.:43:22.

correct? It is a different one, not brand-new, but a different one that

:43:23.:43:26.

has been circulated. He is in that this weekend. Was that for any

:43:27.:43:31.

particular reason, were you concerned about the performance at

:43:32.:43:35.

Spa? We were concerned, obviously the race pace for him just wasn't

:43:36.:43:40.

normal. We just wanted to eradicate all variables, and introduce another

:43:41.:43:46.

chassis for this weekend. Got to get a quick comment from you, you have

:43:47.:43:50.

dealt with some difficult situations with two topline drivers in the

:43:51.:43:57.

past, what are your thoughts on the situation with Hamilton and Rosberg?

:43:58.:44:02.

It is interesting. Obviously it is their business, not ours. But it is

:44:03.:44:07.

amazing how much fuss can be generated over what looked like a

:44:08.:44:13.

pretty innocent racing incident. Obviously as we get into was the

:44:14.:44:16.

business end of the championship, emotions will be running high.

:44:17.:44:21.

Probably whatever the team says the drivers will not listen to anyway.

:44:22.:44:25.

We shall watch with interest. Thank you for joining us.

:44:26.:44:32.

Interesting comment from Fernando Alonso yesterday, talking about

:44:33.:44:37.

Alonso and Hamilton, saying it's a good problem to have because

:44:38.:44:40.

fighting for the championship is where anybody wants to B. If it

:44:41.:44:47.

means a bit of grief, you want to be in the situation. It is something

:44:48.:44:50.

you would like to be doing because he hasn't won a championship since

:44:51.:44:56.

2006. The rates and self as the best, or Lewis Hamilton as the best

:44:57.:45:01.

-- insult. He said it again last weekend. He does not appreciate that

:45:02.:45:05.

Sebastien came in and steam-roll of the last few years. The public

:45:06.:45:10.

perception is that he is the man and that annoys Fernando and he does not

:45:11.:45:15.

miss a chance to get the knife in, saying he thinks that Hamilton is

:45:16.:45:19.

the best and interesting that he should say that. He said it is for

:45:20.:45:22.

other people to change their opinion. It is all good stuff.

:45:23.:45:27.

Looking at Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull Garrard, still with a big

:45:28.:45:31.

smile on his face, very laid back. He started the press conference

:45:32.:45:37.

yesterday, he started singing and chanting to the press guys, he is so

:45:38.:45:45.

laid back. And you get the feeling everybody at home is getting behind

:45:46.:45:48.

Daniel Ricciardo because he is so refreshing. Absolutely, what's

:45:49.:45:52.

interesting to me, something that Christian said at the end of Spa,

:45:53.:45:56.

there is no pressure on him. I thought hang on, go back to the

:45:57.:46:00.

start of the season, this young guy coming in against the former world

:46:01.:46:05.

champion and having not performed, that would have been the end for

:46:06.:46:11.

him. What greater pressure can you get than that? Now he is

:46:12.:46:14.

happy-go-lucky and everybody considers him the greatest thing

:46:15.:46:18.

since sliced bread. Doing a fantastic job and third in the

:46:19.:46:22.

championship. He lost 18 points in Australia when Red Bull were done

:46:23.:46:26.

for their fuel flow situation being above the tolerance. With those 18

:46:27.:46:31.

points, he would only be 17 behind Hamilton right now, so that has to

:46:32.:46:39.

be painful. Yes, apologies, I said he was 35 points behind Nico, when

:46:40.:46:43.

it is 35 behind Lewis. He was asked how much he would like those 18

:46:44.:46:48.

points and he said it isn't a big deal at the moment but if he gets to

:46:49.:46:53.

Abu Dhabi and he loses by 17 it will be a big drama. It would be. 64

:46:54.:46:59.

points behind Nico Rosberg. You cannot count against anything. 35

:47:00.:47:03.

points for a win today. A couple more comments coming in, one person

:47:04.:47:08.

asking with Red Bull becoming a works team now, interesting comment

:47:09.:47:14.

that several beatable of Red Bull confirming that effectively Red Bull

:47:15.:47:20.

is the works team now. We now have a chance to hear from Daniel

:47:21.:47:22.

Juncadella who was in the Force India a few moments ago. He has

:47:23.:47:29.

jumped out of the Force India. That was probably a tough job, half an

:47:30.:47:33.

hour, you do the hard work and now you are talking to us. Was it fun?

:47:34.:47:40.

Yes, it's also interesting, I am the first rider to do it, so that is

:47:41.:47:44.

special and I hope to take the positives. Yes, I wouldn't say that

:47:45.:47:50.

it is a sad feeling, it is always really nice to drive a Formula One

:47:51.:47:53.

car, especially a track like monster, always special. How quick

:47:54.:48:00.

the car is, always special -- Monza. WWE tell us about this idea

:48:01.:48:05.

where you do the first half because presumably the team had to change

:48:06.:48:09.

the seat. Would it be better to let either of you do the full session?

:48:10.:48:16.

Probably that's the easiest way, but this season we have two sets of

:48:17.:48:20.

tyres and some teams want to give the reserve drivers a chance, maybe

:48:21.:48:25.

just 30 minutes and it possible to make the change. That is also

:48:26.:48:30.

something we are learning, is it possible, is there enough time. We

:48:31.:48:33.

will now see if he is available to do the full hour. I think it is

:48:34.:48:38.

something positive as well. Every chance I get, even 30 minutes, I

:48:39.:48:44.

have to be happy with it. Always positive for the future. A good

:48:45.:48:49.

performance from you, not too far behind Nico Hulkenberg. We will --

:48:50.:48:57.

will we see behind the wheel again this year? There will definitely be

:48:58.:49:02.

more chances. I have to focus on the DTM season, to finish it and then we

:49:03.:49:06.

will come back here and hopefully I will have more chances, that's the

:49:07.:49:11.

plan. What about next season, is Formula One still be goal and are

:49:12.:49:15.

you talking to the team 's? It is my goal, I am not really speaking to

:49:16.:49:20.

the teams. Right now I am at Force India and that is my chance. We will

:49:21.:49:27.

see what's coming. We will see what is in place for me. I am pushing for

:49:28.:49:32.

it. I think my chance is coming now, I'm ready for the real drive and if

:49:33.:49:39.

not, I will stay with DTM, which is also a great championship and I'm

:49:40.:49:44.

enjoying it a lot. Interesting to hear that because there is some talk

:49:45.:49:47.

with Sergio Perez about whether he will stay at Force India, whether

:49:48.:49:51.

Daniel Juncadella will take his seat. Here they are, sharing the

:49:52.:49:56.

seat in one session. As we heard from him, although this has been

:49:57.:50:00.

allowed all year, the first time a development pro has done the first

:50:01.:50:05.

30 minutes. What does it involve in terms of the work for the team to

:50:06.:50:09.

switch between two driver 's? Quite a lot, it is more than pulling out

:50:10.:50:14.

the seat and putting another one. The pedals have been taken out of

:50:15.:50:20.

the car, Juncadella 's medals have been removed. -- pedals. They will

:50:21.:50:28.

change the seat belt and finally the seat will go in. He has been out of

:50:29.:50:32.

the car for 14 minutes and there are 45 minutes of the session to go. I

:50:33.:50:37.

would anticipate that they will be 15 more minutes of work to go before

:50:38.:50:41.

you see Sergio Perez doing the last 30 minutes of the session. By

:50:42.:50:47.

contrast on the other side of the garage, Nico Hulkenberg is out of

:50:48.:50:51.

his car anyway and they are changing the floor. Perez maybe won't lose

:50:52.:50:55.

very much time in comparison to his team-mate. Without a doubt it is not

:50:56.:51:01.

ideal for the driver preparation when you have to give up your car at

:51:02.:51:06.

the beginning of the weekend. White no, but clearly Force India feeling

:51:07.:51:10.

it is important that they do that. Roberto Merhi is back out again, the

:51:11.:51:13.

caterer and development driver for this morning only. Kobayashi will go

:51:14.:51:21.

out afterwards. Kobayashi seems to be on a short notice period at the

:51:22.:51:24.

moment as to what is going on at Caterham. He got the call pretty

:51:25.:51:29.

late this weekend. Sergio Perez, just watching to see the team

:51:30.:51:33.

getting his car ready so he can get a few laps in over the last part of

:51:34.:51:38.

morning practice. Hamilton is fastest, Rosberg inset and -- in

:51:39.:51:43.

second, then Button. Adrian Sutil is not driving this

:51:44.:51:53.

morning because Giedo van der Garde is in his car. Peter Sauber himself

:51:54.:51:57.

is here this weekend. Interesting to see that he has turned up to see

:51:58.:52:01.

what is going on. Sauber has yet to score any points this weekend. Kimi

:52:02.:52:07.

Raikkonen, after his best result of the season, fourth place at Spa.

:52:08.:52:11.

Here at Monza he has had mixed results. He has never won the

:52:12.:52:17.

Italian Grand Prix. The reverse of what we had at Spa where Alonso had

:52:18.:52:21.

never won but Kimi had a brilliant record. Raikkonen has never won

:52:22.:52:26.

year, second placed on Michael Schumacher in 2006. Three podiums at

:52:27.:52:34.

this track including his last ever podium with Ferrari in 2009. Let's

:52:35.:52:39.

go down to the pit lane because we can talk to Nico Hulkenberg. It is

:52:40.:52:44.

getting a little bit noisy. You are not out on the track, it looks like

:52:45.:52:49.

they are changing the floor. Is it a damage, or a different style of

:52:50.:52:54.

floor? It is intentional, we are doing some aerodynamic tests. You

:52:55.:52:59.

had such a good weekend here last year, qualifying in third, fifth in

:53:00.:53:02.

the Grand Prix. Is this a circuit you like to come to? Yes, not just

:53:03.:53:09.

the track, everything, Monza has the whole package, the tifosi,

:53:10.:53:13.

everything is good about this place, apart from the weather. I like

:53:14.:53:18.

coming here. Usually I have good races here so hopefully we can make

:53:19.:53:23.

it another good one. What about the battle between McLaren and Force

:53:24.:53:29.

India? McLaren were ahead by two points at Spa but do you think the

:53:30.:53:33.

team can fight until the end? It is going to be tricky. I think they

:53:34.:53:40.

have overtaken us in terms of the pure car pace, so we have two update

:53:41.:53:45.

the car, otherwise it will be difficult. Will you be at Force

:53:46.:53:48.

India next year, or are you talking to the other teams? We have to ask?

:53:49.:53:57.

I am here. You are going to stay? I hope so. How long to leave go out? I

:53:58.:54:04.

think another 15 minutes. Hulkenberg looking very relaxed and chilled

:54:05.:54:09.

out. He had a good run here last year driving for Sauber, third place

:54:10.:54:12.

on the grid, finishing in fifth place. Just ahead of Nico Rosberg,

:54:13.:54:18.

who couldn't get past him in the closing stages of the Grand Prix.

:54:19.:54:22.

Rosberg has never even had a podium finish here at Monza, whereas

:54:23.:54:27.

Hamilton won in 2012, pole position in 2009. He has a pretty good

:54:28.:54:35.

record, second to Alonso in 2007. Seeing what Merhi did, going over

:54:36.:54:40.

the kerb on the Ascari chicane but no damage done. Going back to the

:54:41.:54:49.

question, simply with Red Bull becoming a Renault works team, do we

:54:50.:54:53.

think that there could be enough improvement in 2015 from Renault to

:54:54.:54:56.

challenge Mercedes? That's the big question, Tony. Renault and Ferrari

:54:57.:55:01.

have been quoted in the press as saying they would love to see a

:55:02.:55:06.

reduction in the freeze, they are restricted in what they can change

:55:07.:55:09.

on the engines. They cannot do anything to them in the

:55:10.:55:11.

on the engines. They cannot do next season they can change about

:55:12.:55:15.

half of the engine but it is not complete freedom. Unsurprisingly

:55:16.:55:23.

they would like more freedom. It is a complex points system, changing

:55:24.:55:26.

something means so many points and you can total up so many points,

:55:27.:55:29.

changing your engine in certain ways. Obviously having been caught

:55:30.:55:36.

on the hop this year, they would like more freedom. I hear that

:55:37.:55:41.

Mercedes have taken steps as well. I don't think it's going to be easy to

:55:42.:55:45.

catch them. Honda coming next year, making some bullish comments about

:55:46.:55:49.

how strong they are going to be. They say that they can challenge

:55:50.:55:55.

Mercedes and they feel that they can win some races. They will be joining

:55:56.:56:00.

the McLaren team exclusively in 2015. Maybe some different teams

:56:01.:56:05.

after that, but very bullish remarks. Fascinating to see what

:56:06.:56:09.

they come up with. They are a company who have racing in the

:56:10.:56:13.

blood. You cannot imagine them doing a poor job, but it is difficult

:56:14.:56:21.

technology. Technology isn't easy. You know, it's fascinating, it

:56:22.:56:24.

really is, to see where they arrive. That's part of what is

:56:25.:56:28.

causing so much fun in the driver market because Honda are a big

:56:29.:56:32.

player and drivers like Alonso and Vettel, they know that it could be

:56:33.:56:37.

beneficial to get to grips with them. Maldonado making a mistake at

:56:38.:56:43.

the first chicane. Pastor Maldonado, followed us, a tough season so far,

:56:44.:56:47.

yet to score any points in the World Championship at all. Always happy to

:56:48.:56:54.

race. When he came over from Venezuelan, he was karting initially

:56:55.:56:59.

in Italy and then the Italian Formula Renault championship. He

:57:00.:57:02.

feels at home here. But that wasn't the way to take the first chicane. A

:57:03.:57:09.

quick comment, we have spoken about the history at Monza and what an

:57:10.:57:13.

important circuit it is. Hulkenberg was saying how much he loves coming

:57:14.:57:16.

here. There were some comments earlier this year, worrying comments

:57:17.:57:20.

about whether Monza would continue their contract in Formula One. What

:57:21.:57:25.

do we know about the existing contract and what will happen? They

:57:26.:57:38.

have a deal as far as 2016. I spoke to Ivan Campelli yesterday. He is a

:57:39.:57:44.

former Ferrari driver. He is president of the company with a 70%

:57:45.:57:52.

stake. He owns it with... RADIO: My head rest has come off. Look at

:57:53.:57:59.

that. OK, we will look in the pit lane. The area around the driver 's

:58:00.:58:03.

head has come loose and is being pulled up by the airstream. That

:58:04.:58:08.

looks like a Ferrari. Like the Schumacher Ferrari with the bulky

:58:09.:58:14.

head rest, as he comes back into the pit. Ivan working in collaboration

:58:15.:58:25.

with the president of the company who directly manages the circuit.

:58:26.:58:28.

They are jointly responsible over the next few months to come up with

:58:29.:58:33.

a new deal, proposing it to Bernie Ecclestone. He said to me, there are

:58:34.:58:38.

concerns. You can't just rely on the fact that the history of the place

:58:39.:58:41.

will guarantee another deal. He is not taking the threats likely. I

:58:42.:58:54.

asked him about Mugello. He said he is not sure. He says he does not see

:58:55.:59:02.

it as a viable threat. He says that 70,000 people arriving on a bike is

:59:03.:59:06.

one thing, in a car is another. He says that he can propose another

:59:07.:59:09.

deal and continue the tradition here. He said it is about getting

:59:10.:59:13.

the money together and getting a better deal. I said, a better deal

:59:14.:59:18.

for you, and the gave me a look to say don't be so naive. That is the

:59:19.:59:24.

key to it. Lets hope they do a deal with Bernie Ecclestone and Ivan

:59:25.:59:27.

Campelli. The Italian Grand Prix is a fundamental part of the

:59:28.:59:34.

championship. Daniel is keeping the heat on the tyres by weaving

:59:35.:59:36.

around, which sometimes you see here on the out lap. They will do a bit

:59:37.:59:43.

of weaving to generate higher temperatures, so they can be ready

:59:44.:59:47.

to do the quick lap. Hamilton is the fastest with 35 minutes to go.

:59:48.:59:51.

Rosberg is second fastest. A Mercedes 1-2, nothing new in that

:59:52.:59:57.

but McLaren are pretty quick, Button is in third, so McLaren are looking

:59:58.:00:03.

stronger. Then the two Ferrari 's. As Christian Horner said you have to

:00:04.:00:07.

watch the pace of the Ferrari cars on Friday with a touch of salt

:00:08.:00:11.

because they tend to start well and they do not always deliver is

:00:12.:00:12.

Saturday qualifying. Kvyat has just gone seventh,

:00:13.:00:23.

Goodlatte from him. Let's see Sebastian Vettel go across the line,

:00:24.:00:30.

still eighth -- a good lap. We quite often see Williams languishing a bit

:00:31.:00:33.

on day one, they tend to run with a bit more fuel. They heavier car

:00:34.:00:38.

meaning they cannot complete such a rapid lap. A new head rest going

:00:39.:00:46.

into Kevin Magnussen pars car, so something must have failed in the

:00:47.:00:50.

fitting mechanism, presumably, on the previous one. Max

:00:51.:00:59.

fitting mechanism, presumably, on 17th ahead of Maldonado, and Charles

:01:00.:01:02.

Pic, who is driving the Lotus this morning. He has driven for Morrissey

:01:03.:01:06.

and cater in the last couple of years, but is the development driver

:01:07.:01:20.

for Lotus now -- he has driven for Marussia and cater. -- Caterham.

:01:21.:01:37.

Such a shame, he did not do a lap, he broke down on the second lap at

:01:38.:01:43.

Spa. That was a shame. I read a comment that he was only interested

:01:44.:01:47.

in racing here if he could do all the sessions. I can understand that,

:01:48.:01:51.

getting your eye in at Monza is a different thing, the speeds they are

:01:52.:01:56.

covering here. Fernando Alonso with some sparks coming from the back of

:01:57.:02:02.

the Ferrari as he goes past the Caterham into Parabolica, runs the

:02:03.:02:06.

car right out to the edge. It looks to me like this run-off will not

:02:07.:02:09.

make a big difference in terms of the line they take. Alan, I think

:02:10.:02:15.

you have wandered down to that area, what are you seeing? Yes, they are

:02:16.:02:20.

running right out to the white line and there are a couple of trademarks

:02:21.:02:28.

onto the green. -- tread marks. If they go wide there is less grip and

:02:29.:02:31.

they have two comeback anyway, at the end of the corner when you try

:02:32.:02:35.

to open up the steering angle and released the speed, there is a curb,

:02:36.:02:40.

where the Marussia is running past now. The Astroturf is behind it. To

:02:41.:02:46.

continue with any momentum at the apex point, they would have to

:02:47.:02:50.

continue outside the white line all the way through, and that is not

:02:51.:02:55.

possible. I do think right now, as the Red Bull is blasting past, the

:02:56.:03:00.

limit will be the white line which previously was the edge of the grass

:03:01.:03:04.

and the gravel. I don't think it will make any difference in reality.

:03:05.:03:09.

We will leave you there to make more observations and see what you can

:03:10.:03:13.

see. Currently still the Mercedes that are top of the times here. Van

:03:14.:03:18.

der Garde coming down towards the second chicane, mashes the brake

:03:19.:03:25.

pedal, drops down to third gear, picks up the throttle quite

:03:26.:03:28.

gradually, trying to avoid getting any wheel spin. Les

:03:29.:03:35.

. Crucial corner, here. Again, he had to play with the throttle a bit,

:03:36.:03:45.

try to get on the power as quick as possible. This is a Diarra zone, one

:03:46.:03:53.

of the high-speed sections, beneath the bridge -- this is a DRS zone.

:03:54.:04:04.

Does he take eighth? Yes he does, before getting onto the breaks into

:04:05.:04:09.

Parabolica. Van der Garde coming past you now. Yes, just coming to

:04:10.:04:17.

the apex now. Not so quick on the throttle, but he has a clean run

:04:18.:04:20.

behind him, Jenson Button type into the slipstream. Ultimately the

:04:21.:04:26.

Sauber struggling for grip round here, as it has been everywhere

:04:27.:04:31.

else. Yes, been a tough year for them. Jenson Button slotting in

:04:32.:04:35.

behind. He has gone fastest with that lap. He has done a 1:26 .810.

:04:36.:04:46.

Was that effective? Presumably he was losing a bit of downforce

:04:47.:04:50.

through Parabolica? A touch, but not too much, he was able to hook in

:04:51.:04:56.

half a car which and therefore able to get some air onto the front

:04:57.:05:04.

-- half a car width. He would have been a touchdown from Ascari down

:05:05.:05:10.

towards Parabolica, and remember here, five times per lap they are

:05:11.:05:16.

over 200 mph. If you gain one or two miles per hour, it actually does

:05:17.:05:19.

help you, and catapults you all the way down the straights. Fernando

:05:20.:05:23.

Alonso has improved as well and gone for fastest with that time. 1:20

:05:24.:05:31.

7.1, within a 10th of Rosberg's fastest time. The boss at Ferrari

:05:32.:05:36.

has lot of pressure on his shoulders this weekend. Let's find out whether

:05:37.:05:41.

his position is going to change. There are rumours it may even be an

:05:42.:05:45.

upward move rather than a sideways move. Daniel Ricciardo being pushed

:05:46.:05:51.

back into the pits, down in 13th position. Van der Garde has gone up

:05:52.:05:58.

to 16th. Looking at the speed trap figures from the official speed trap

:05:59.:06:01.

down towards the first chicane, the highest speed of anywhere on this

:06:02.:06:07.

track, Felipe Massa has 346 K pH. That's three K pH faster than Daniel

:06:08.:06:17.

Juncadella. Kvyat up there. Must be very low downforce on the Toro Rosso

:06:18.:06:20.

cars. It is of course they have got the Renault engine. We know that is

:06:21.:06:25.

slightly down in terms of maximum power to the Mercedes. Button going

:06:26.:06:31.

quickly again, he has just set the fastest first sector of anybody.

:06:32.:06:35.

Magnusson on a lap that could improve. McLaren looking in decent

:06:36.:06:40.

shape. It looks better for them. That's interesting, used a bit of

:06:41.:06:44.

extra road. He made a mistake on the way in. Did you get a chance to see

:06:45.:06:50.

that? We will come back to that in a second. Definitely using the new bit

:06:51.:06:56.

of run-off on the outside. Yes Magnusson did use a bit, you got two

:06:57.:07:01.

wheels onto it. Remember it is a regulation that you have to have all

:07:02.:07:05.

four wheels over the white line that there is any penalty that could even

:07:06.:07:08.

be thought to be applied, so he was a metre and a half within it. The

:07:09.:07:14.

more people do that, the more they will put rubber down. Button is

:07:15.:07:20.

coming past you, how does he look? He slowed down, but he is just

:07:21.:07:25.

crossing the line now, but I think it will be a fast lap. He had

:07:26.:07:30.

fastest in the first sector and second, but he lost a couple of

:07:31.:07:33.

tenths in the last sector so he did not improve his lap time in the end.

:07:34.:07:36.

The tyres are a little older remember as well. He did a fast lap

:07:37.:07:41.

which put him quickest and then slowed down to get a gap to the

:07:42.:07:47.

Sauber, and then he went again. Towards the end of the lab you have

:07:48.:07:52.

the exit of Ascari, and into Parabolica. You need to tie a grip

:07:53.:07:56.

on entry to float the rear in, and you need the front grip to get on

:07:57.:08:01.

the throttle. He pinched it a bit more on the exit, may be lost a

:08:02.:08:07.

fraction. We saw him pick up a tow a couple of laps ago, this is one of

:08:08.:08:11.

the few circuits where sometimes team-mates tried to tell each other

:08:12.:08:17.

to a qualifying time. Normally it is too much hassle to bother with, but

:08:18.:08:20.

sometimes they think it is worth going for. Anything you have

:08:21.:08:26.

experience of? Mostly it is Ferrari, and it is about trying to gain

:08:27.:08:31.

something on home turf. Because the tifosi expect a good position. In my

:08:32.:08:40.

experience, it has been more in Formula Ford when you would try to

:08:41.:08:44.

do these things. Once you get into it you lose so much time and all

:08:45.:08:47.

your focus is on getting the toe exactly right. If you do get it

:08:48.:08:54.

right, it is perfect, but the chances are very small. And your

:08:55.:08:58.

team-mate loses out massively. I would expect Ferrari to try it but I

:08:59.:09:04.

don't think many teams will. Would you expect Mercedes to help each

:09:05.:09:09.

other? Good question. Ferrari did ask last year, but it got shirty on

:09:10.:09:13.

the radio and there was a bit of controversy over what he said to the

:09:14.:09:18.

team afterwards. That's right, was he being cocky? He called them

:09:19.:09:22.

genius or something, but it was sarcastic. Ferrari don't like

:09:23.:09:26.

anything like that coming out in public. But yes, Ferrari have tried

:09:27.:09:31.

it several times in the past few years. So, Button on top of the

:09:32.:09:39.

times at the moment, and the Mercedes have gone back out, but not

:09:40.:09:43.

really doing anything particularly dramatic in terms of pace. Button on

:09:44.:09:48.

top, Hamilton second, Rosberg third, Alonso fourth. Getting in between

:09:49.:09:54.

those Mercedes engined cars, and then the next one to get in amongst

:09:55.:09:58.

the Mercedes is Sebastian Vettel, who is now in sixth position with

:09:59.:10:01.

his Renault powered Red Bull. Raikkonen is seven, Kvyat eighth,

:10:02.:10:09.

Gutierrez in ninth, and Bottas still down in 10th. Ericsson still a

:10:10.:10:13.

fraction slower than his team-mate from their earlier runs. Roberto

:10:14.:10:18.

Merhi put in a good first lap. Looks as though he may have a bit more

:10:19.:10:22.

fuel on, and the tyres have done some work, so it might be hard to

:10:23.:10:26.

improve on that. But he has done only 13 laps. Merhi made the point

:10:27.:10:32.

yesterday when we were talking to him, you don't actually get 90

:10:33.:10:35.

minutes, you effectively get half an hour. And you have got to get on

:10:36.:10:42.

with it. Interesting to see that radiocommunication very early in the

:10:43.:10:46.

session. Really stamping on the throttle, wheel spinning, he was

:10:47.:10:50.

going for it straightaway. Absolutely right. Interesting to see

:10:51.:10:55.

that. There is not time to learn in Formula One, you have got to be on

:10:56.:10:59.

it straightaway. 24 minutes to go in this session. Button is over a

:11:00.:11:09.

second down on what we saw in first practice last year when Lewis

:11:10.:11:12.

Hamilton was quickest. And there he is. In this same session Lewis

:11:13.:11:25.

Hamilton did a 1:20 5.5. I guess the difference is slightly less than we

:11:26.:11:29.

have seen some tracks. What is being lost through the corners, which are

:11:30.:11:32.

not such a big part, is more than being made up by the straight-line

:11:33.:11:37.

speed here. Absolutely. This is the thermal camera again. We had some

:11:38.:11:45.

shots from the other thermal camera. You can see the left front really

:11:46.:11:50.

heating right across the tread width, but the right front does not

:11:51.:11:53.

do an awful lot of work so it cools down. He has to turn into a

:11:54.:11:58.

left-hander in a moment, so the right-hand Taia will heat up.

:11:59.:12:04.

Through Ascari, both front tyres doing plenty of work. Hulkenberg

:12:05.:12:10.

just ahead of him, that is the black blob you can see. And there the

:12:11.:12:18.

tyres are working pretty hard. Very early on the power, that was nice. A

:12:19.:12:24.

good lap, it might be quicker. Yes, you goes fastest, one: 26.5.

:12:25.:12:34.

He is now top of the tree, Button second and Rosberg third.

:12:35.:12:40.

Interesting to see the thermal images. Important to keep heat in

:12:41.:12:46.

the tyres, we saw Ascari, you have to get it through quickly, because

:12:47.:12:50.

you have a long run all the way down to Parabolica. Your speed through

:12:51.:12:56.

Ascari is important. That's one of the places this year... That's

:12:57.:12:59.

exactly where we are talking about. One of the places where people were

:13:00.:13:03.

predicting that it was going to be difficult for the drivers to keep

:13:04.:13:06.

hold of the car, because of the extra torque. If you try to get

:13:07.:13:11.

through quickly, you might have lost some heat, and by the time you get

:13:12.:13:14.

there, you have to get it through and get out. They already looked a

:13:15.:13:20.

bit lairy last year on the exit. It is an iffy part of the track. So far

:13:21.:13:25.

we are seeing some lovely shots, that was Bottas getting a bit

:13:26.:13:29.

sideways in Parabolica as well. Esteban Gutierrez going a bit slowly

:13:30.:13:33.

here, not quite sure why. He has set a good pace in the first sector, but

:13:34.:13:39.

backed off in the middle sector. He may be lining up for another clear

:13:40.:13:42.

lap. In fact I think he is coming in. I can tell you that Sergio Perez

:13:43.:13:49.

is out on track with Force India, having seen another driver in it

:13:50.:13:54.

is out on track with Force India, earlier, Peres is in the car. He has

:13:55.:13:59.

done the first couple of sectors. On board with Bottas, coming up to

:14:00.:14:10.

Ascari. Let's watch him. A lot of work going on there, my goodness.

:14:11.:14:16.

Even in the middle he was working the steering quite hard. Let's watch

:14:17.:14:21.

him up to Parabolica, or will he back it off and bring it back in?

:14:22.:14:27.

The Williams having quite a low drag, low downforce set up on that

:14:28.:14:32.

car. Just experimenting a bit there with what it is like using a bit of

:14:33.:14:35.

extra road, maybe playing with the line into the pit lane as well. They

:14:36.:14:39.

are all is trying to find places where they can gain, and the pit

:14:40.:14:43.

entry is somewhere you can gain a few hundredths of a second.

:14:44.:14:47.

Previously drivers have been weaving from Lesmo down to Ascari just to

:14:48.:14:56.

keep your tyres hot. On board with Lewis Hamilton, let's look at him

:14:57.:15:03.

going through Ascari. That looks a lot more planted than Bottas, or

:15:04.:15:10.

Hamilton early on. Going to the Parabolica. The G-force halfway

:15:11.:15:15.

through the corner will certainly fire up. Makes it look very easy. A

:15:16.:15:26.

real balancing act, as Alan was telling us. And going faster again,

:15:27.:15:32.

one point 26.1. Close to the time last year, very good performance.

:15:33.:15:38.

Down towards the first corner. Alan, I think you have moved, what can you

:15:39.:15:43.

see? I am at the entry to Parabolica. You spoke about

:15:44.:15:48.

Hamilton, he was breaking after the 50 meter board. Most people are

:15:49.:15:54.

braking a little bit earlier. You are going down from 200 mph but he

:15:55.:15:59.

was just after the 50 metre board and the car seemed to stop on itself

:16:00.:16:01.

and then he ran it and the car seemed to stop on itself

:16:02.:16:06.

and tidy. Kimi Raikkonen trying to do the same thing but the Ferrari

:16:07.:16:10.

does not have the stability that Hamilton did. That was a clean run

:16:11.:16:17.

into Parabolica, fast lap. Raikkonen's lap isn't as good,

:16:18.:16:24.

1.27.4. He is the seventh quickest of the grouping. We have Hamilton on

:16:25.:16:32.

top, then Button, Alonso, Magnussen in fifth place.

:16:33.:16:38.

A bit of work going on for DM van der Garde, the development driver at

:16:39.:16:42.

Sauber. Sutil waiting to get in the car. His

:16:43.:16:53.

best ever Formula One result was here, qualifying second in 2009,

:16:54.:16:58.

finishing in fourth place. Sutil is still to get to the podium despite

:16:59.:17:04.

many races, 121, the most anybody has gone without getting a single

:17:05.:17:11.

podium. There is Hamilton going in. The usual techniques, blowers going

:17:12.:17:17.

card to get some air going through the radiators and on the brakes as

:17:18.:17:21.

well. Things are going well for Hamilton at the moment, fastest in

:17:22.:17:25.

the session but we haven't seen Rosberg going out for a while. We'll

:17:26.:17:29.

wait to see what he does. Very chilled yesterday, Hamilton. He is

:17:30.:17:34.

determined to put everything that has gone on at Spa behind him and

:17:35.:17:39.

start fresh ear. He still has every chance of doing that if he can have

:17:40.:17:44.

a good weekend -- fresh here. He has had a lot of trouble but if you can

:17:45.:17:49.

go well here it can set up a sequence of good results. He is

:17:50.:17:55.

overdue one. He feels he can go on a roll like you did at the start of

:17:56.:17:57.

the season when he had four back-to-back wins -- like he did. He

:17:58.:18:03.

was feeling confident and happy yesterday. But he is an emotional

:18:04.:18:08.

guy, it is difficult for him to disguise how he feels. A lot of the

:18:09.:18:13.

reasoning behind Mercedes coming out and saying what they did is to give

:18:14.:18:17.

him a warm feeling because you don't want him to feel that, you know,

:18:18.:18:23.

Rosberg is a German in a German team. He hasn't been too badly

:18:24.:18:31.

affected by that. I really think... For the remainder of the season he

:18:32.:18:36.

will be formidable. Let's have a little listen to how he felt

:18:37.:18:40.

yesterday. Coming into the weekend he seems more relaxed and chilled

:18:41.:18:46.

than we have seen him previously. He is normally pretty relaxed on the

:18:47.:18:49.

Thursday before the Grand Prix weekend begins and he has reset from

:18:50.:18:54.

the previous week. Let's see what he says as he spoke to us yesterday. I

:18:55.:19:01.

am in a really happy place. I'll tell you the reason. I had a really

:19:02.:19:07.

good week. Of course the first couple of nights after the weekend

:19:08.:19:12.

are tough, I am groggy and it is difficult to get up, but I had a lot

:19:13.:19:16.

of support from my fans and family and friends. And then I have had a

:19:17.:19:22.

positive week. I think after all these years, the difficult times, I

:19:23.:19:29.

can move past things and I'm excited about this coming race. I had a

:19:30.:19:33.

couple of days off last weekend with some friends, which was hilarious. I

:19:34.:19:37.

can't remember the last time I laughed so much. Seven races ahead,

:19:38.:19:46.

a lot of points. I feel good, I'm feeling fit and ready and I know I

:19:47.:19:52.

have a good car. A good attitude from Lewis Hamilton coming into the

:19:53.:19:57.

event. Yellow Yap, I think it's a very important race for

:19:58.:20:01.

. It brings out the best in him. One of the moves he did here in 2007,

:20:02.:20:11.

the move on Kimi Raikkonen at the first chicane told you everything

:20:12.:20:15.

you need to know about his talent. He put it in there like a go-kart

:20:16.:20:20.

and when you watch it back you can probably look it up on the Internet,

:20:21.:20:26.

2007, Hamilton and Raikkonen, the amazing thing is that Raikkonen's

:20:27.:20:31.

left front is locked, it is not like he was braking early, but Lewis came

:20:32.:20:35.

down the inside of him like he was driving a go-kart. He got away. I

:20:36.:20:42.

think Raikkonen was stunned by that. On the brakes, Hamilton has always

:20:43.:20:47.

been astonishing. The difficulty at Monza, it is a bigger challenge

:20:48.:20:51.

because there is so little downforce, the car is much less

:20:52.:20:54.

stable and it moves around more. That is what he thrives on. To do it

:20:55.:21:01.

without any help, it is tremendous. That is why Alonso says what he

:21:02.:21:08.

says. That is real skill, and white Hamilton will be confident but every

:21:09.:21:11.

time we think he's in a situation where he is confident, Rosberg can

:21:12.:21:18.

deliver a lap -- and while Hamilton will be confident. We thought

:21:19.:21:23.

Hamilton was going to be on pole previously, but Rosberg did it and

:21:24.:21:29.

Hamilton made a mistake. You have to give credit to Rosberg for putting

:21:30.:21:35.

him under pressure. Nico, it is tense and hundredths, and that flips

:21:36.:21:39.

a switch in the brain of Hamilton and it helps in to make mistakes.

:21:40.:21:45.

Allen, what are your thoughts? Should this suit Lewis Hamilton this

:21:46.:21:49.

weekend? In theory you are right, especially about being on the brakes

:21:50.:21:53.

because he is fantastically good can throw the car around. The corners

:21:54.:21:58.

here for the chicanes, they are quite short and you have to have

:21:59.:22:03.

controlled aggression. I think this race between those two is going to

:22:04.:22:06.

be won in the head and it Hamilton has his head in the right gear,

:22:07.:22:11.

focused on the job, I think he'll be very tough to beat. But we've seen

:22:12.:22:17.

that Nico Rosberg is a pretty hard-headed character as well and he

:22:18.:22:21.

has had his wings clipped, as we said before, the situation in Spa.

:22:22.:22:28.

This race is going to be won in the head, not just on the track. We can

:22:29.:22:32.

see the caterer coming through, the green light flashing on the back of

:22:33.:22:51.

the car. -- the Qatar -- Caterham. He does not have a full licence to

:22:52.:22:55.

raise the Grand Prix yet. He earned one by winning the 2011 Formula

:22:56.:22:59.

Renault championship but there is some talk that it has expired

:23:00.:23:05.

anyway. That has two years currency, so effectively he has to

:23:06.:23:09.

qualify again. In terms of his ability and what he has done in

:23:10.:23:12.

other championships, it shouldn't be a problem. That's right, Merhi is

:23:13.:23:18.

doing a good job so far. Faster than his team-mate from the lap he did

:23:19.:23:27.

earlier, 1.30.7, against 1.30.9, Ericsson. -- Ericssen. They did not

:23:28.:23:40.

race at Monza in that year, but they were raising the big tracks like

:23:41.:23:47.

Spa. Bottas beating Ricciardo to the title by three points. It's funny

:23:48.:23:52.

when you look back at the junior formula years and how they work

:23:53.:23:56.

together and now Bottas and Ricciardo are the stars of 2014.

:23:57.:24:01.

It's something you have to do, it is the only championship where they

:24:02.:24:06.

have the same judging criteria for the car. It doesn't happen in

:24:07.:24:11.

Formula One very often. Daniel Ricciardo started his European

:24:12.:24:15.

career here in Italy because he raced out in Australia, of course.

:24:16.:24:18.

He has Italian heritage, his father was born in Sicily and his mother is

:24:19.:24:23.

from an Italian family, but he was born and raised in Australia. He has

:24:24.:24:33.

an Italian name, which is why his father stopped the Italian

:24:34.:24:35.

pronunciation, wanting the Anglo-Saxon pronunciation. He

:24:36.:24:41.

started his overseas racing here, Italian Formula Renault, and doing

:24:42.:24:46.

that is where Red Bull spotted him. He did a test and he picked up their

:24:47.:24:51.

backing. From Ricciardo, racing in Italy and at Monza, I bet it has

:24:52.:24:56.

some good memories. It will have, he is a very happy character,

:24:57.:25:02.

interesting to see what the fans are like in Melbourne next year.

:25:03.:25:05.

Absolutely and I wonder if the Italians are going to take him to

:25:06.:25:09.

heart a little bit. There are no Italian Formula One drivers, he is

:25:10.:25:13.

the closest they get. I guess that they may adopt him. It is justified,

:25:14.:25:21.

it is fair to have that. In 2008 when Sebastian Vettel scored his

:25:22.:25:26.

first Grand Prix victory here, in the wet, fantastic pole position in

:25:27.:25:30.

the Toro Rosso, they adopted him, didn't they because it was Toro

:25:31.:25:35.

Rosso and their first success. That was very popular and I'm sure Daniel

:25:36.:25:42.

will be as well. It is all about Ferrari, the tifosi, but Ferrari may

:25:43.:25:45.

struggle to deliver the kind of result they would like to see. With

:25:46.:25:50.

under ten minutes to go, first practice at Monza, as expected

:25:51.:25:54.

Mercedes are on top but McLaren seem to be closer here than we have seen

:25:55.:25:58.

at some of the other tracks. Maybe this track is going to sue them

:25:59.:26:03.

quite well. But in his second fastest, splitting the Mercedes.

:26:04.:26:08.

Rosberg has done 22 laps, but he has not done another quick lap like he

:26:09.:26:14.

did earlier, whereas Hamilton has. Magnussen is in fifth place. Looking

:26:15.:26:20.

at the speed trap figures, Massa is on top, then Perez, and Juncadella.

:26:21.:26:29.

Jean-Eric Vergne and banal Kvyat, fourth and fifth in the speed trap

:26:30.:26:34.

with Renault power - Daniil Kvyat. It shows they are using eight very

:26:35.:26:42.

downforce setup, which will make the car very skittish in the corners.

:26:43.:26:45.

Interesting to see even Jean-Eric Vergne and Kvyat managed to hold

:26:46.:26:52.

onto those cars. Not a bad compromise, clearly. Looking at

:26:53.:26:57.

Kevin Magnussen, going through Parabolica. Interesting to see if he

:26:58.:27:02.

runs wide here. Just a touch, perfectly within bounds. Nowhere

:27:03.:27:07.

near all four wheels over the white line, but definitely running a

:27:08.:27:11.

little bit over the edge of the tarmac into the new piece of road.

:27:12.:27:16.

Further down the order, Max Chilton is a fraction faster than Bianchi in

:27:17.:27:27.

the two Marussia cars. Caterham, generally they have out-qualified

:27:28.:27:32.

Marussia here at Monza in the past. In the middle, Charles Pic, Lotus. A

:27:33.:27:38.

little bit off Maldonado's time. It's going to be a tough weekend for

:27:39.:27:42.

Lotus and I don't see them getting much out of it. RADIO: The careful

:27:43.:27:48.

of the high surface temperatures, exit five, carrying into six and

:27:49.:27:53.

seven. So, high surface to bridges, talking about the temperature of the

:27:54.:27:58.

tyres, on the exit of the second chicane here. -- surface

:27:59.:28:06.

temperatures. We spoke about keeping the tyres hard going through Ascari.

:28:07.:28:12.

You do not want to make them unusable. The medium and hard

:28:13.:28:16.

compound tyres being used this weekend. On board with Bottas, using

:28:17.:28:22.

a lot of the road. Using the kerb out of the second Lesmo, which is

:28:23.:28:26.

typical, although you have to be careful because it is easy for the

:28:27.:28:30.

car to swap ends and we have seen some big accidents. Your old Matt

:28:31.:28:35.

John Watson left half of his car there in 1981. Splitting the McLaren

:28:36.:28:41.

as he hit the barrier. We've seen other accidents in the past -- your

:28:42.:28:51.

old mate. We will see a lot of that in the weekend, especially

:28:52.:28:55.

qualifying. They lock-up going into Parabolica which is unusual because

:28:56.:28:58.

it's a delicate balance of braking hard but not upsetting the car, but

:28:59.:29:08.

he locked the front nearside. Running a little bit wide. You

:29:09.:29:16.

wonder if he needed to do that. Valtteri Bottas, the 12th quickest

:29:17.:29:21.

at this stage, Massa is in 13th, so they are well matched but a little

:29:22.:29:26.

bit off the pace. Not a surprise, Friday is always a conservative

:29:27.:29:30.

session from Williams. You saw the little puff of smoke from the

:29:31.:29:33.

inside, running wide as a result probably. Clearly Williams are

:29:34.:29:39.

experimenting with their setup but they are not chasing the outright

:29:40.:29:42.

lap time in the same way that some others are. He seems to be

:29:43.:29:46.

struggling to get that through there. Not as good as he may have

:29:47.:29:54.

expected, maybe getting some more balance on the car. That's what

:29:55.:29:57.

Friday is all about, the practice sessions. Friday night is normally a

:29:58.:30:02.

long night, the engineers and mechanics get out of here very late

:30:03.:30:10.

having done the data. A lot of simulations going on overnight to

:30:11.:30:13.

work out the best running and then they can come in on Saturday morning

:30:14.:30:16.

and put on the best bits to the car and go into qualifying, to deliver

:30:17.:30:18.

that kind of result. Just watching Sebastian Vettel here,

:30:19.:30:27.

up through Parabolica. The scene, of course, of his first-ever victory in

:30:28.:30:32.

Formula One, here at Monza, in 2008, in appalling conditions. I think

:30:33.:30:36.

that was the last time we had a wet race here. Of course Sebastian

:30:37.:30:41.

Vettel went on to win for Toro Rosso, his first-ever Grand Prix

:30:42.:30:47.

win. At the time Toro Rosso was very much a sister team to Red Bull, it

:30:48.:30:54.

was kind of a Red Bull designed car. One race before the senior team,

:30:55.:30:59.

didn't he? Amazing, really. Certainly put himself on the map.

:31:00.:31:03.

Rosberg locking up on the second chicane. They have to stay outside

:31:04.:31:07.

the underlying if they do that, and we join. That is something they have

:31:08.:31:13.

been told in the team managers meeting. He quickly bailed out of

:31:14.:31:16.

potentially damaging the front tyre any further. Runs through the

:31:17.:31:20.

chicane and back out again safely. Watching Sergio Perez, who did not

:31:21.:31:23.

do the first part Watching Sergio Perez, who did not

:31:24.:31:28.

he has now left up to eighth as a result of the time he has done

:31:29.:31:34.

later. Faster than Hulkenberg. Great race here for Sauber a couple of

:31:35.:31:39.

years ago. Road, over the speed humps. -- he

:31:40.:31:55.

had to go through the escape. He will be trying to get that first

:31:56.:31:59.

podium that he has been chasing this year, and the like has counted

:32:00.:32:03.

against him. Need to get it together, because they are involved

:32:04.:32:06.

in the battle with Ferrari for third place in the Constructors'

:32:07.:32:09.

Championship. They need to guys scoring points. Bottas has been on

:32:10.:32:14.

the podium many times, but they need both up there. RADIO: What time

:32:15.:32:21.

should I be doing? Looks like the tyres need three laps, mid-29. And

:32:22.:32:29.

he has just done a 1:20 9.4, perfect. Teams are assessing and as

:32:30.:32:37.

the mating what the drivers should be able to lap at. -- and

:32:38.:32:46.

estimating. Sergio Perez has almost got to the 350 mark in terms of

:32:47.:32:51.

kilometres per hour. Big twitch into Ascari. Looked as though it was a

:32:52.:32:57.

mistake, instability underbraking is what we have been talking about.

:32:58.:33:01.

Light downforce on these cards, they get harder on the brakes. Looked

:33:02.:33:05.

like it started to get wrong on the way into the corner. Weaving as

:33:06.:33:11.

though he thinks he does not have enough tyre temperature. Could well

:33:12.:33:16.

be that. Once they lose temper Japan it is very hard to get it back.

:33:17.:33:21.

Looked as though the rear grab a little bit underbraking, and he

:33:22.:33:24.

spent the next few metres trying to sort it all out. Let's watch the

:33:25.:33:32.

on-board. Looks relatively undramatic. But when you are going

:33:33.:33:37.

to under them here with the back end slipping all over the place it must

:33:38.:33:42.

be very interesting -- when you are going 200 mph. Didn't have a wheel

:33:43.:33:49.

off or anything. Maybe it was something to do with the brake

:33:50.:33:53.

balance or energy recovery system. Because it works on the rear wheels.

:33:54.:33:59.

This was earlier. Just had to short cut the chicane. So it he is having

:34:00.:34:04.

an exciting time of it, but he is eighth fastest, which is encouraging

:34:05.:34:08.

for Force India in the battle with McLaren. But McLaren looking

:34:09.:34:12.

particularly strong this weekend, it will be hard for Force India to get

:34:13.:34:17.

back on terms with them. Perhaps an opportunity to further stretch out

:34:18.:34:20.

the little advantage they have in the constructors points. Just two

:34:21.:34:24.

points between them at the moment. Back with Lewis Hamilton, still

:34:25.:34:26.

lacking in the mid-1:20 nines. Now he is coming down beneath the

:34:27.:34:48.

bridge, under the old banking. What Ascari.

:34:49.:35:01.

Very neat and tidy through Parabolica, there, and a clean lap.

:35:02.:35:26.

1:20 9.2. So he has ended up the session

:35:27.:35:35.

fastest. Lewis Hamilton quickest in first practice at Monza, you will be

:35:36.:35:42.

happy with that. Button splits the two. -- he will be happy. Fairly

:35:43.:35:47.

trouble-free session for everybody. Ricciardo all the way down in 16th

:35:48.:35:52.

place, bit of work to be done. Good debut from Roberto Merhi, who was 20

:35:53.:35:59.

second, faster than his team mate in the end. Rosberg will be watching

:36:00.:36:03.

closely for the second session later.

:36:04.:36:07.

Eight few of us at home might have put money on Lewis Hamilton topping

:36:08.:36:13.

practice one. Impressive performance by McLaren. They have great top

:36:14.:36:21.

speed. It has been a continuous development this year. They know it

:36:22.:36:26.

is a troubled car, but they have improved in the last few races. It

:36:27.:36:31.

is not really the true picture. We would expect the Williams to be a

:36:32.:36:36.

lot quicker when it comes to the race, they are historically slow on

:36:37.:36:40.

Friday morning. And we would expect Sergio Perez to be quick as well. He

:36:41.:36:47.

was fast at the end of the session. Pretty fast on all sections of the

:36:48.:36:51.

track, on and off. It was a heart stopping moment. Yes, just as you

:36:52.:36:56.

come up there, there is a bump and you are rising up. You go on the

:36:57.:37:01.

brakes and the rear wheels become light, and they locked very

:37:02.:37:06.

slightly. So he darted from one way to the other. You can have a very

:37:07.:37:10.

big accident there, if you try to control it, so he came off the

:37:11.:37:14.

brakes and had a fast run across the gravel. That will have done some

:37:15.:37:18.

damage to the underfloor of the car. Not necessarily been the ideal

:37:19.:37:23.

session for Sergio Perez, but his car has some raw speed. Ferrari

:37:24.:37:27.

under immense amounts of pressure here at Monza. We need to whisper,

:37:28.:37:32.

we are standing just outside. There are too many of them around and

:37:33.:37:36.

about. But they will expect a result. And the tifosi will expect a

:37:37.:37:42.

result. The car did not look stable into Parabolica, and coming out, so

:37:43.:37:47.

their problems will continue. But Fernando Alonso, if anybody can drag

:37:48.:37:52.

out a result, he can. He will be hoping to in free practice at 1pm.

:37:53.:37:58.

We will see you in just over a couple of hours.

:37:59.:38:03.
