HAZEL IRVINE: Good afternoon, day 14 here and we are heading straight for

:00:20.:00:25.

tae kwon do. If you shared Jade Jones altar macro

:00:26.:00:31.

second gold medal last night, you will be intrigued by the fortunes of

:00:32.:00:35.

this man, Lutalo Mohammad, from Walthamstow. Bronze medal in London,

:00:36.:00:41.

his first fight in the competition against Hayder Shkara of Australia

:00:42.:00:45.

in the 80 kg class. We will hand you straight over.

:00:46.:00:53.

The power in Lutalo Mohammad's kicks. He has gauged the distance

:00:54.:01:00.

perfectly straightaway. Thought he had another one. Think he missed the

:01:01.:01:07.

head. The defensive punch through of the Australian to move it to four.

:01:08.:01:12.

What about the confidence, he looks to the crowd, to his fans, as his

:01:13.:01:17.

cause. We haven't seen a lot of that, he is bringing something very

:01:18.:01:26.

different to the mat. It seems that Mohammad has worked out his distance

:01:27.:01:31.

straightaway. There we are, shot to the body, doesn't count this time.

:01:32.:01:36.

Just waiting for the attack, waiting to counter. Going further ahead.

:01:37.:01:44.

-- going for the head. Hayden Shuker Renaud has had a minute to get a

:01:45.:01:58.

feel for the force that is coming for him -- Hayder Shkara. He

:01:59.:02:06.

continues to yell out, his coach and his man continues to struggle. Goes

:02:07.:02:12.

down, but no score there, there will be a warning.

:02:13.:02:19.

Caught off balance with a leg in the air. You are likely to go to ground.

:02:20.:02:27.

Attempt at a double-click to the head from Mohammad, didn't come off.

:02:28.:02:33.

He is going to get point, though. -- another point. Second warning for

:02:34.:02:39.

the Australian for the same thing, so that equates to appoint, to the

:02:40.:02:42.

opposition. -- a point. There is the point for the head kick

:02:43.:03:03.

again. Losing his balance but he scored off it. 8-0, he is being

:03:04.:03:08.

outclassed, the 26-year-old Australian. He is a flying force

:03:09.:03:20.

from Manchester, Mohammad. Again, looks up to the crowd, pumps up the

:03:21.:03:25.

fist. He is loving it out there. He looks by far the superior fighter.

:03:26.:03:30.

He is playing a really good game here, picking off his opponent when

:03:31.:03:36.

he needs to. Shkara struggling to block and defend the attacks that

:03:37.:03:42.

are coming in. Mohammad looks like he is going for the body shot and

:03:43.:03:47.

that the last second, changes it to a body shot. Just blocked that time

:03:48.:03:56.

by the shoulder of Shkara. He just went at him and did not stop. The

:03:57.:04:02.

buzzer couldn't come quick enough. Hayder Shkara was born in Australia

:04:03.:04:08.

to a Japanese mother and an Iraqi father, so has always been a little

:04:09.:04:13.

bit different to everyone else, he says, always struggling to fit in.

:04:14.:04:17.

One of the intentions of making the Olympic Games is to show the

:04:18.:04:21.

community, the Islamic community and Koranic immunity that all migrants,

:04:22.:04:26.

no matter what their position, their background, can achieve through hard

:04:27.:04:30.

work -- Arabic community. Certainly hard work for him at the moment, he

:04:31.:04:37.

can't get on the scoreboard. It is three two minute rounds but at the

:04:38.:04:43.

margin is 12 or more after two completed rounds, the bout will be

:04:44.:04:46.

stopped and there is a chance of that occurring here.

:04:47.:05:08.

Shkara is going to need to step up now if he is going to try and catch

:05:09.:05:14.

the lead that Mohammad has. An 8-point deficit. So feisty from

:05:15.:05:23.

Mohammad, really attacking all the time, keeping Shkara on the back

:05:24.:05:24.

foot. Timing is impeccable. Mohammad do well to stay on the mat.

:05:25.:05:44.

The Australian taking the middle of the mat and coming at his opponent.

:05:45.:05:49.

Hayder Shkara continues to work. He is not giving it up, that is visual.

:05:50.:05:55.

Mohammad thought he had a kick to the head, it didn't register.

:05:56.:06:03.

Massive build, 91 centimetres, six foot three, all muscle. Power punch

:06:04.:06:13.

to the body but again, it doesn't quite get through from Shkara.

:06:14.:06:23.

Hayder Shkara of Australia really struggling to get anything to count

:06:24.:06:36.

right now. To the body from Great Britain, thought it was a score. It

:06:37.:06:40.

is hard, you really have to go with some force and it has to be so clean

:06:41.:06:46.

to register on the electronic sensors. Spinning kick towards the

:06:47.:06:49.

head, well defended but this time gets through, so within one movement

:06:50.:06:56.

now of this bout ending. An 11 point lead. Mohammad really going forward.

:06:57.:07:02.

He is well aware, he thinks he has got there with the body shot. Not

:07:03.:07:09.

quite. Shkara trying to defend to take this into the third round and

:07:10.:07:13.

he won't. Another three points therefore Great Britain and in two

:07:14.:07:18.

seconds, this will be all over. He has gone a little bit early, it has

:07:19.:07:22.

to be the end of the second round and the headgear goes back on. He

:07:23.:07:29.

has done it, he has won it easily. Hayder Shkara is a lawyer and he

:07:30.:07:33.

might want to see his opponent in court, that was almost criminal.

:07:34.:07:40.

14-0. Greater respect for one another. Hayder Shkara, he went from

:07:41.:07:47.

just being a sparring partner in London, now he is knocked out in the

:07:48.:07:52.

first round here in Rio. Let's hope he can come back in four years and

:07:53.:08:01.

go a step further but for Great Britain, Muhammad, what a fight.

:08:02.:08:04.

Outclassed his opponent and he moves forward to the quarterfinals. There

:08:05.:08:09.

were some injury concerns coming in, he missed last year's World

:08:10.:08:15.

Championships with a knee injury and earned qualification by winning

:08:16.:08:18.

silver and gold in successive events but he still was struggling with it

:08:19.:08:25.

and only made one outing this year. He beat Cook in that one outing, at

:08:26.:08:32.

the European Championships. He is fit and certainly firing. He

:08:33.:08:35.

certainly is and he has nicely progressed through the round of 16,

:08:36.:08:42.

14-0. Stopped at the second round. He will have conserved energy, blown

:08:43.:08:47.

the cobwebs away and let's see what he can do in the quarters.

:08:48.:08:51.

HAZEL IRVINE: That was emphatic, wonderful performance and the very

:08:52.:08:55.

confidence building performance from Lutalo Mohammad as he comes back in

:08:56.:09:00.

bidding for gold, having won bronze in London. His next fight in the

:09:01.:09:07.

quarterfinal will be later on, 3pm our time, seven o'clock depending on

:09:08.:09:10.

how things go at the venue for the next fight in the quarterfinals.

:09:11.:09:16.

Now, it was last Tuesday, the 9th of August, that marked 80 years to the

:09:17.:09:20.

day since the legendary Jesse Owens won the last of his four gold medals

:09:21.:09:27.

in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. We have seen an awful lot of great

:09:28.:09:31.

Olympians since then, the greatest, we have seen Michael Phelps and

:09:32.:09:36.

Usain Bolt, who have won many, many more medals than Jesse Owens ever

:09:37.:09:40.

did but the American's legacy is not really just about the medals.

:09:41.:09:50.

MICHAEL JOHNSON: the grandson of a slave, the son of a sharecropper,

:09:51.:09:57.

James Cleveland Owens was born into poverty. A childhood stricken by

:09:58.:10:03.

ill-health, he spent his early years working the cotton fields of

:10:04.:10:08.

Alabama. His family moved north to Ohio in the great migration, fleeing

:10:09.:10:12.

the prejudice of the South. And his father started work at the local

:10:13.:10:16.

steel mill, which gave Jesse the chance of a good education. It was a

:10:17.:10:23.

junior high that his athletic talents were first discovered by

:10:24.:10:24.

track coach Charles Reilly. His speed gain him a place at Ohio

:10:25.:10:36.

State University, but there were no scholarships for black students, no

:10:37.:10:42.

matter how fast you were. Owens was made captain of the track and field

:10:43.:10:45.

team but had to live off campus, shower separately and eaten away

:10:46.:10:51.

from his white team-mates. -- eat away. But in 1935, the world took

:10:52.:10:57.

notice, in the Big ten championship at the University of Michigan where

:10:58.:11:01.

he set three world records and equal fourth, all in the space of 45

:11:02.:11:05.

minutes. The following summer, he was representing his nation.

:11:06.:11:11.

SPEAKING GERMAN. Berlin, 1936, the stage was set for

:11:12.:11:26.

Hitler's Nancy Games. The stage was also set for Jesse Owens, who was in

:11:27.:11:28.

the form of his life -- Nazi Games. Owens is ahead. Metcalfe comes up.

:11:29.:11:34.

But Owens wins. I am very glad to have won the 100m

:11:35.:11:51.

in the Olympic Games here in Berlin. The competition was grand, I was

:11:52.:11:54.

very glad to come out on top. Thank you. The next day, he struggled in

:11:55.:12:00.

the long jump. It was only when German competitor

:12:01.:12:10.

Luz Long suggested he moved his star position that Owens improved. --

:12:11.:12:13.

start position. A new world record, 8.06 metres. Luz

:12:14.:12:26.

Long was the first to congratulate him and the two remained friends

:12:27.:12:29.

until Luz Long was killed in World War II. Owens went on to win the

:12:30.:12:37.

200m and 4 x 100 m relay, all in the space of just six days. I haven't

:12:38.:12:44.

seen my wife for three months and I am very glad to be back home to see

:12:45.:12:50.

her. On his return to the States, there was a ticker tape parade

:12:51.:12:53.

through the streets of New York and reception at the Waldorf Astoria in

:12:54.:12:59.

his honour. But when Jesse and his wife tried to enter the hotel, they

:13:00.:13:03.

were told not to use the front door because of the colour of their skin.

:13:04.:13:09.

There was no telegram from the president, no invitation to the

:13:10.:13:13.

White House. Franklin D Roosevelt failed to acknowledge Jesse Owens'

:13:14.:13:17.

achievement. In 1976, Owens was awarded the presidential medal of

:13:18.:13:23.

Freedom by President Gerald Ford. He died four years later of cancer.

:13:24.:13:29.

Owens was a man who carried himself with dignity and grace. When I look

:13:30.:13:33.

back on his difficult childhood, what he overcame, what he

:13:34.:13:36.

overachieved -- achieved and stood for, I feel a sense of pride. Jesse

:13:37.:13:45.

Owens is a hero and an inspiration. He years. 80 years last Tuesday when

:13:46.:13:52.

he achieved the last of those four gold medals. Absolutely amazing.

:13:53.:13:58.

Now, back to Rio and what is happening here. Last night, there

:13:59.:14:01.

was a huge chance for the host nation to celebrate success. They

:14:02.:14:04.

had missed out on beach volleyball in the women's final the night

:14:05.:14:12.

before. Could Bruno and Allison put things right against the Italians?

:14:13.:14:15.

Everyone in this nation hoped they could.

:14:16.:14:19.

Brazil against Italy is the gold medal match and will the home fans

:14:20.:14:24.

be able to cheer the gold medal bows so crave?

:14:25.:14:31.

-- they so crave? We will have some of this.

:14:32.:14:34.

About is the power. That first big, Lupe, was outrageous. And Allison

:14:35.:14:47.

gets his first block of the match and the crowd enjoyed that one. He

:14:48.:14:53.

rolls it into the corner and Brazil have come from 1-5 down to 9-8 up.

:14:54.:15:04.

It has been hit and it stays hit. Big point, this. First set point,

:15:05.:15:10.

Brazil. Brazil are halfway to the gold medal. So Brazil get the second

:15:11.:15:20.

set under way. Down quickly. What a point!

:15:21.:15:24.

There's some energy about the Italian pair right now. Finds the

:15:25.:15:29.

mark and they are in front. They are in front for the first time in the

:15:30.:15:37.

second set. Alison seems to have the bit between his teeth. It is

:15:38.:15:45.

electric on Copacabana beach. Three match points to Brazil. We are one

:15:46.:15:53.

point away from bedlam. This is what they wanted! This is what they came

:15:54.:16:00.

for! Alison and Bruno have delivered gold for Brazil on Copacabana beach

:16:01.:16:08.

in the men's beach volleyball. They're so happy about this, here in

:16:09.:16:12.

our host nation. The first men's beach volleyball gold for Brazil in

:16:13.:16:16.

12 years. Athens was the last time. It was chucking it down here,

:16:17.:16:21.

ironically speaking, for that celebration. It didn't matter a jot

:16:22.:16:25.

for everybody. As I was showing you earlier on, the only payer that got,

:16:26.:16:31.

it because it was so late in the day was the O Dia. They say double gold

:16:32.:16:37.

for Alison and Bruno and the girls earlier on in the day. Brazil very

:16:38.:16:42.

happy about things so far on day 14. We're very happy about things in

:16:43.:16:50.

terms of the progress of Lutalo Muhammad. Let's get his reaction

:16:51.:16:54.

from that. He came out into the arena with a

:16:55.:16:58.

huge smile on your face. A perfect start. Yeah, exactly what I wanted.

:16:59.:17:04.

Rio is a beautiful city. I just want to keep doing. This one down, three

:17:05.:17:07.

to go. The bronze medal four years ago in London, you want better than

:17:08.:17:17.

that. I'm only here for gold. I have three matches to accomplish my goal.

:17:18.:17:22.

It's gold medal or bust. Yeah, yeah. Let's hope it's Gold Medal then and

:17:23.:17:26.

not bust. He has a lot of work to do. He has a quarter final bout at

:17:27.:17:32.

7pm. This is the sprint canoeing. We've been enjoying a good morning

:17:33.:17:37.

there. Liam Heath the fastest through to the semifinals. We're

:17:38.:17:42.

going to the K4 now. We saw Britain's women struggling a bit.

:17:43.:17:46.

They're going in their semifinal shortly. It's Liam Heath that we're

:17:47.:17:52.

concentrating on first. A great deal of encouragement from that

:17:53.:17:55.

performance earlier on? Yeah, just what we were hoping for. We heard

:17:56.:18:00.

the interview with John yesterday, his partner, in the K2 and John was

:18:01.:18:06.

saying how well Liam was going in training and how expectations were

:18:07.:18:10.

high and how he's absolutely been blitzing it in training. He looked

:18:11.:18:13.

in fine form this morning. He got off to a good start. So important in

:18:14.:18:19.

the shortest distance in which they compete here at the Olympic Games.

:18:20.:18:23.

He managed to win with some ease. He saved a bit at the end. He is in the

:18:24.:18:27.

first of the semifinals. That's due off at 2. 07, UK time. The first

:18:28.:18:33.

four in that semifinal will make it through to the medal final, the

:18:34.:18:37.

other remaining boats head to the B final. But there are a couple of

:18:38.:18:42.

good competitors alongside him, the German won his heat and he's there

:18:43.:18:50.

as well. The Spanish as well. Tough competition for Liam. The first four

:18:51.:18:53.

go through to the semifinal and he's in great form. We talked about that

:18:54.:18:58.

fact earlier, he hasn't been doing this event for long but he's looked

:18:59.:19:03.

good so far. It's amazing the work load these paddlers go through to

:19:04.:19:06.

achieve this standard at the Olympic Games. I was reading an article

:19:07.:19:13.

saying that Liam weighs 75 kilos and he's doing pull-ups with 90 kilos

:19:14.:19:17.

worth of weight. That's what he's having to do to achieve the kind of

:19:18.:19:22.

lateral muscle definition to power the boat. It's astonishing when you

:19:23.:19:25.

hear the amount of weight that these guys are able to shift. The power

:19:26.:19:30.

they produce is quite incredible. I have to be honest, from a Lehman's

:19:31.:19:35.

point of view, when I see a normal human being, that I think I am! When

:19:36.:19:40.

I see these guys walk past I feel so intimidated. The muscle definition,

:19:41.:19:44.

as you point out, on their arms, shoulders, down their backs, if you

:19:45.:19:47.

got a close up of what the muscle definition is like, especially down

:19:48.:19:51.

from the neck to the lower waist, it is incredible, what they have there.

:19:52.:19:55.

They're like thoroughbreds really, like race horses. They look amazing.

:19:56.:19:58.

The physical definition is quite outstanding. The power they produce

:19:59.:20:01.

over the shortest distance is amazing. But the speed that they

:20:02.:20:06.

have to show out of the traps early on from the start is so important.

:20:07.:20:10.

If they get behind, they struggle to make that ground up. They can

:20:11.:20:15.

sustain it. That's the beauty of it. They can sustain it for a

:20:16.:20:19.

significant period. Liam Heath has looked fantastic so far. We're

:20:20.:20:23.

keeping our fingers crossed that he goes through this semifinal. The

:20:24.:20:32.

first four go through. One of two heats. Liam in lane five. Let's

:20:33.:20:42.

rejoin Patrick and Helen. Looking forward to this next one. The first

:20:43.:20:48.

heat of the, or the first semifinal of the K 1 200 metres. Liam Heath

:20:49.:20:52.

who raced in the third heat has a draw in the first semifinals. He's

:20:53.:20:57.

had less rest than most of the athletes out there. I don't think

:20:58.:21:00.

there's any need to worry. He looked very confident. Liam Heath will be

:21:01.:21:12.

on the nearside as far as the camera is concerned. There is Liam. Every

:21:13.:21:24.

single paddling event is about the start, middle section and the

:21:25.:21:27.

finish. You have to be in contention at the start. This, in particular is

:21:28.:21:41.

maintaining the speed. Yeah, all about the last ten, 15 metres and

:21:42.:21:45.

who can maintain and keep the momentum on the boat very high.

:21:46.:21:58.

They're keeping their stroke rate extremely high. We have Rauhe in

:21:59.:22:05.

lane four of Germany. Heath in five. Craviotto in six. Mark De Jonge, the

:22:06.:22:11.

current world champion. Will he make it through to the finals. One to

:22:12.:22:25.

four make it through to the A final. Not a good start from Liam Heath.

:22:26.:22:30.

He's left behind certainly by Rauhe of Germany and Craviotto of Spain a

:22:31.:22:34.

better start as well. Now we start to see Liam Heath wind it up, gets

:22:35.:22:39.

into that forward position. The baseball cap in reverse. I don't

:22:40.:22:42.

know whether that adds anything to his performance. He is now heading

:22:43.:22:50.

Rauhe by a couple of inches. It's about the first four going through.

:22:51.:22:52.

A good lane for the winner certainly. Liam Heath just easing

:22:53.:23:00.

up, a lunge from Rauhe to get a top spot. Liam would have had a little

:23:01.:23:04.

scare off the start. He must have been in eighth position out of

:23:05.:23:07.

eight. He showed what he can do between 50 and 100. Absolutely. He

:23:08.:23:12.

didn't have the greatest start, but he really picked it up there. Not a

:23:13.:23:20.

bad time. He certainly will be looking to sort out that start. That

:23:21.:23:25.

was a quicker time than he did in the eats earlier on. He had to work

:23:26.:23:30.

very hard for it. He did 34. 327 in the first in the heats this morning.

:23:31.:23:35.

A good time there from him, certainly without getting that good

:23:36.:23:38.

start. He had to work extremely hard. Then you saw a push from Rauhe

:23:39.:23:44.

trying to get up against him again. Then he kicked in and accelerated

:23:45.:23:49.

again in the last 20 metres out. You don't win Olympic finals with a bad

:23:50.:23:54.

start. Is that going to just disrupt his confidence a little before

:23:55.:23:57.

tomorrow? No, I don't think so. What it really showed is actually how

:23:58.:24:03.

dominant he was. Alongside him Ronald Rauhe and Craviotto.

:24:04.:24:05.

Craviotto was the one who got gold ahead of him in the K 2 yesterday.

:24:06.:24:09.

He showed just how dominating he is. Yes, he will be looking for a better

:24:10.:24:13.

start, of course, he won't want to be under that pressure. But what it

:24:14.:24:17.

shows is that strength mentally as well as physically that it didn't

:24:18.:24:20.

bother him. He just got involved in the race and took it all the way to

:24:21.:24:27.

the finish line. That slow mo showing what strength he has. So

:24:28.:24:32.

much of the power comes unseen as far as we're concerned. But it's

:24:33.:24:35.

coming from the abs and the legs that are doing just as much work.

:24:36.:24:39.

It's the connection between the lower body and the upper body that

:24:40.:24:46.

Liam Heath has marched through many paddle for year after year. They

:24:47.:24:50.

never get the feel that these top athletes have got. So the job is

:24:51.:24:55.

half done. He's got a Silver Medal from the K2 yesterday. And he's now

:24:56.:25:03.

into the A final of the K1 200 metres, a title Britain took four

:25:04.:25:07.

years ago. You have to feel sorry for Ed that he didn't even qualify

:25:08.:25:11.

for the Olympics this time round. We've seen why. Liam heath is the

:25:12.:25:16.

number one. He certainly is. He's extremely dominant. I remember being

:25:17.:25:21.

told, coming back from the European Championships, how dominating he

:25:22.:25:25.

was. That demonstration of 200 metres there shows the dominance

:25:26.:25:28.

because of the fact he didn't get the good start. I'm not sure what

:25:29.:25:32.

happened. But he just kept in his game. He just took it out and yeah,

:25:33.:25:35.

he came under a bit of threat for the first place, then he upped the

:25:36.:25:37.

rate again. I think the excitement is going to

:25:38.:25:49.

build over the next 24 hours, as we wait to see whether he can add

:25:50.:25:55.

another medal and I believe, Liam is now with Rishi.

:25:56.:25:58.

We watched you through the first heat in the semifinal. The first

:25:59.:26:01.

heat looked comfortable. How much tougher was the semi? Yeah, the

:26:02.:26:07.

first heat was very comfortable, controlled. Semi was still

:26:08.:26:13.

comfortable and controlled. Got a whipping tail wind at the moment,

:26:14.:26:16.

which is great. But it picks the water up. It makes it choppy. Got to

:26:17.:26:21.

keep it in control, keep calm and just try to grip the water the best

:26:22.:26:24.

you can. Get to the finish line basically. We talk about it quite

:26:25.:26:29.

often, we look at how important the start is on this shortest of

:26:30.:26:34.

distances, are you guys - is the start so critical for you? If you

:26:35.:26:38.

miss it a beat, how hard is it to claw that back? You know, races are

:26:39.:26:45.

won in thousandths of a second. You have to be on the buzzer when the

:26:46.:26:49.

gate drops. It's more important to have a solid, consistent start to

:26:50.:26:52.

set the race up. It's not just the start and finish, it's the bit in

:26:53.:26:57.

the middle where you gain ground and get the fast times. We hope you

:26:58.:27:01.

recover and you're 100% ready to go tomorrow. We wish you the very best

:27:02.:27:05.

of luck. Thank you very much. Back to the commentary and to Helen and

:27:06.:27:10.

Patrick. We're waiting for the second heat of

:27:11.:27:17.

the K 1 200. This might give us an indication of what Liam will be up

:27:18.:27:20.

against tomorrow. The winning time from the first semi just over 34

:27:21.:27:25.

seconds. But with a poor start, you start to think that Liam Heath could

:27:26.:27:30.

go sub-34 if the conditions stay like this. If he nails the start,

:27:31.:27:33.

there's a bit of time in it. -- better time in it. There's time for

:27:34.:27:38.

him in that. If the conditions are the same he could go sub-34.

:27:39.:27:49.

Beaumont is one man to watch. Australia in six with Stephen Bird.

:27:50.:28:01.

Rumjancevs in seven from Latvia. There's the Australian. Australia

:28:02.:28:10.

will be desperate for success here. Australia got the bronze medal in

:28:11.:28:21.

the K2 1,000 m. Argentina in lane eight. Favourites to watch, Molnar

:28:22.:28:34.

of Hungary, Rizza in lane four and Beaumont of Francis in five.

:28:35.:28:43.

-- France in five. Just over 30 seconds of madness. 100% power. But

:28:44.:28:50.

the precision has got to be there as well.

:28:51.:28:55.

One missed stroke and that could be the chance of the A final out the

:28:56.:28:57.

window. Liam Heath safely through. A good

:28:58.:29:11.

start from Stephen Bird of Australia. A bit too much bouncing

:29:12.:29:17.

on the boat from ham. Beaumont -- from him. Beaumont looking smooth.

:29:18.:29:21.

Italy going well with Rizza. He's widening the power now. Beaumont

:29:22.:29:28.

looking good. The Hungarian is coming through. Sorry no, it's Rizza

:29:29.:29:34.

from Italy. Now Beaumont from France. He's really coming through.

:29:35.:29:40.

Ten metres to go and Maxime Beaumont not a totally convincing

:29:41.:29:44.

performance. Look at the time. We got 33 on the clock. If they've

:29:45.:29:48.

beaten 34, it's considerably quicker than the first heat. We're waiting

:29:49.:29:52.

for confirmation of that. The times aren't up, going through the photo

:29:53.:29:57.

finish procedure, which took an age in the men's K 2 200 yesterday

:29:58.:30:01.

before we were sure that Britain not only got a medal, but it was the

:30:02.:30:08.

Silver Medal. 34. 398 the initial time.

:30:09.:30:12.

chips and Liam Heath winning his semifinal in 34.076. It is a big,

:30:13.:30:28.

big margin. It is time to get excited and if Liam Heath takes the

:30:29.:30:32.

gold, he will have a collection of gold, silver and bronze from Olympic

:30:33.:30:36.

Games. No one has bettered that. I wonder whether he is aware of that,

:30:37.:30:40.

probably very much so and if he isn't, I am sure his partner John

:30:41.:30:47.

Schofield will be honoured. That performance in the first semifinal

:30:48.:30:50.

from Liam Heath, I didn't see any troubles with anyone's starts in the

:30:51.:30:55.

second semifinal, so you have to say he has got the time in him and it

:30:56.:30:58.

will be a surprise if he isn't up there and making sure everyone else

:30:59.:31:03.

is working really hard to beat him. Well, it is so exciting and of

:31:04.:31:07.

course, with two medals from the canoe slalom and we already had one

:31:08.:31:12.

medal from the canoe sprint, if they can add another one tomorrow in this

:31:13.:31:18.

K1 200m, then that equal is the tally from London, but the gold

:31:19.:31:22.

medal would be that little bit special. And how good is that, that

:31:23.:31:27.

Great Britain took the 200 title in 2012? They are not there yet, but

:31:28.:31:32.

looking very good for medal if not the gold. Absolutely, it is

:31:33.:31:36.

fantastic. They have been a really tight knit group, the three of them,

:31:37.:31:40.

Schofield, Heath and Ed Mckeever, they work so hard from the outset --

:31:41.:31:46.

worked so hard from the outset when it was introduced into the programme

:31:47.:31:51.

and how they have managed to do that, the three of them, with their

:31:52.:31:56.

coach, is amazing. The first of four going through to the a final and

:31:57.:32:01.

Australia, with Stephen Bird, confirmed in second position. Italy

:32:02.:32:05.

in three, Latvia in four, Lithuania in five. Sun Navas Kazakis misses

:32:06.:32:18.

out, quite a big margin -- Navakauskas misses out. Maxime

:32:19.:32:26.

Beaumont, three tenths of a second slower than Liam Heath. Conditions

:32:27.:32:29.

could have been marginally different, that could have been the

:32:30.:32:33.

factor but it looks encouraging, especially when you consider Liam

:32:34.:32:37.

Heath was off the start line like a snail, he had a dreadful start and

:32:38.:32:41.

went into overdrive from 50m onwards. These are the men that have

:32:42.:32:48.

qualified for the capital letter a -- letter a final.

:32:49.:32:58.

HAZEL IRVINE: That final will be a roundabout 1:05pm, so more or less

:32:59.:33:01.

as me come on air on Saturday, we will head straight there. I am

:33:02.:33:05.

looking at the times, Liam Heath is clearly the man to beat, that 34.06

:33:06.:33:12.

is the best time in a semifinal, as Patrick and Helen were saying and

:33:13.:33:14.

when you compare it to the winning time of Ed Mckeever in the final

:33:15.:33:20.

last time in London, that was 36.2, so they have already smashed the

:33:21.:33:23.

Olympic record so far, and it shows you, because this is a new event,

:33:24.:33:28.

only brought in four years ago, it shows you the development and

:33:29.:33:31.

progress that has been made in this shorter sprint in the last four

:33:32.:33:35.

years. Liam Heath clearly is the man in form. It is time to go to the

:33:36.:33:40.

Equestrian Centre, I have been promising you the individual

:33:41.:33:43.

show-jumping and we have got a two rider and horse commendations, Ben

:33:44.:33:47.

Maher on Tic Tac and Nick Skelton on Big Star. Big Star was the Big Star

:33:48.:33:52.

of the London Games and to mark your card, the top 35 got through to the

:33:53.:33:58.

first round of jumping, the top 20 will go through to the final round

:33:59.:34:02.

of jumping tonight, so very important moments for Nick Skelton.

:34:03.:34:06.

The moment of truth for the 58-year-old, who was absolutely key

:34:07.:34:14.

in Britain's team gold medal four years ago, with the lovely horse Big

:34:15.:34:23.

Star. Now 13 years old, the owners have been huge supporters to Nick

:34:24.:34:27.

and the sport show-jumping. Gary used to jump on the county circuit.

:34:28.:34:35.

Now, is this next 80 or 90 seconds going to bring?

:34:36.:35:00.

So Nick here just starting off, a huge leap over the water.

:35:01.:35:11.

Lovely seven strides. Just this last line.

:35:12.:35:45.

Just the last fence to go, sets him up. He has jumped it, he is inside

:35:46.:35:53.

the time, what a round from Nick Skelton. Nick Skelton and the

:35:54.:36:01.

owners, they have given us the first clear round and British hopes may

:36:02.:36:06.

rise this final day to a medal. That was a brilliant round. And

:36:07.:36:12.

absolutely masqueraders -- masterly display of riding. He has brought

:36:13.:36:18.

Big Star here totally fit, totally sound, everything perfect today. And

:36:19.:36:24.

it is all about management. Nick has waited four years for this round and

:36:25.:36:29.

he has nailed it. But it is only part of the story, a long way to go.

:36:30.:36:35.

HAZEL Nick, you kept saying that the horse

:36:36.:36:45.

had it in him and what a round. Amazing, and finally, at that time,

:36:46.:36:49.

isn't it? I looked at it last night and thought it was very big and then

:36:50.:36:53.

I walked in and didn't think it was that big but riding it, it rides

:36:54.:36:59.

much bigger than it looks. But he has done great, amazing. A lot of

:37:00.:37:03.

riders still to come, it gives you a leg up to get to the next round. I

:37:04.:37:08.

think there will be a few clears, to be honest and it depends on what he

:37:09.:37:11.

builds on the next round but at least I am a third of the way there.

:37:12.:37:17.

And the water tray is a little bit different on this one. I wasn't

:37:18.:37:21.

messing with that today. I was a bit close the other day and a bit week

:37:22.:37:25.

off the ground but I was still steady through it today, but more

:37:26.:37:29.

positive off the ground. We will speak to you after the next one,

:37:30.:37:31.

thanks. HAZEL IRVINE: And the good news we

:37:32.:37:35.

are receiving is that Nick has definitely qualify for the final and

:37:36.:37:39.

so he and Big Star are through and Ben Maher on Tic Tac, that is very

:37:40.:37:44.

shortly, so we will see that rather quickly as well, because they are

:37:45.:37:48.

about to get into the arena. We have a date back at the canoe slalom, we

:37:49.:37:52.

have seen our Brazilian friends in the sea to go through to the final,

:37:53.:38:00.

so they can sit back and assess the competition in the semifinals. -- in

:38:01.:38:01.

the C2. Ukraine and Hungary are the two

:38:02.:38:13.

Kroos you would expect to take it out. Doesn't make any difference. If

:38:14.:38:20.

you win already, hungry have decided they can just have an easy stroll

:38:21.:38:25.

and beat the team from Mozambique. Ukraine pushing a little bit harder

:38:26.:38:30.

in the initial stages, maybe just want to practice that start, so

:38:31.:38:35.

important to get that timing, it is the second most critical phase of

:38:36.:38:40.

the race. It is all about whether you want to take it as practice as a

:38:41.:38:48.

crew. This section of the race, certainly in the canoe doubles

:38:49.:38:55.

semifinals, it is very much a trial out, it is not really too much

:38:56.:38:59.

competition as to who is going to go through. The crew from Mozambique

:39:00.:39:03.

are significantly behind inability. For the rest of them, it is a bit of

:39:04.:39:08.

a reseeding process and that depends on how important that to them. They

:39:09.:39:13.

don't know what they are going to be the conditions, so it is a difficult

:39:14.:39:19.

one, difficult one to decide. Ukraine have their noses ahead, they

:39:20.:39:29.

took bronze at the World Championships and are European

:39:30.:39:33.

champions from 2015, so certainly a crew we will be looking out for

:39:34.:39:38.

tomorrow. They are big men, so they tend to have a slightly lower stroke

:39:39.:39:43.

rate than the Brazilians, two smaller men, that is where there is

:39:44.:39:48.

going to be a great battle tomorrow. And then the Czechs, prospects for

:39:49.:39:54.

medals? They could be, they are a good boat. Fifth in London and a fat

:39:55.:39:59.

the World Championships, I think it will depend on how everybody comes

:40:00.:40:05.

out tomorrow -- fifth at. We will see very different racing, it is

:40:06.:40:07.

quite hard to compare when you are out here. We saw the two cruise

:40:08.:40:14.

going through from the heat and they took it out quite hard but still had

:40:15.:40:18.

the advantage of being able to slow down. You can see them almost sort

:40:19.:40:22.

of easing up, making sure they feel good together. That is the most

:40:23.:40:28.

important thing, that they are feeling good, their rhythm and flow

:40:29.:40:32.

on the water is comfortable and that is a feeling they wanted to take

:40:33.:40:38.

through with them to the finals. The feeling has to be there. Again, the

:40:39.:40:42.

man at the back of the boat tending to take the weight, planting his

:40:43.:40:46.

blade fraction at Leigh before the man in front, who is essentially

:40:47.:40:51.

setting their rhythm. It is not so bad in the K2 and C2, but in the

:40:52.:40:57.

cave for, it is a problem because of the man in front gets carried away

:40:58.:41:03.

with the tempo, the men behind can't keep up with it. -- K for. They are

:41:04.:41:10.

six feet seven, they cannot turn the blade over like someone who is five

:41:11.:41:16.

foot 11. That is why it is key to have a plan. They will have a bit of

:41:17.:41:21.

room to adapt but equally, they do know what they are doing, they can

:41:22.:41:25.

only adapt so far, they have to have a plan and be able to react but at

:41:26.:41:29.

the same time, they have to stay in their game plan. You often hear

:41:30.:41:35.

coaches, Natalie is talking about the length of the stroke. Another

:41:36.:41:40.

aspect that is crucial is the amount of time the blade is out of the

:41:41.:41:45.

water because when it is out of the water, you are decelerating, that is

:41:46.:41:48.

why a high stroke rate is significant. Easy win for Ukraine.

:41:49.:41:55.

The Czech Republic go through in second place. Hungary are going to

:41:56.:41:59.

take third and they have been on a Sunday stroll all the way from the

:42:00.:42:03.

start, because they knew they had the better of Mozambique. So Hungary

:42:04.:42:09.

get through to the final with the least effort of everyone in that

:42:10.:42:12.

semifinal and we have one more to come.

:42:13.:42:22.

So here we see the line-up for the second semifinal of the C2 1000m and

:42:23.:42:33.

we are looking for times around 3:20. The first semifinal was a bit

:42:34.:42:38.

of a nonevent because he merit back at the rate of three of the top four

:42:39.:42:43.

teams go through to the final and with Mozambique involved, Hungary,

:42:44.:42:47.

Ukraine and Czech Republic knew they had an easy ride. We have five boats

:42:48.:42:53.

in second century. Poland and Russia, with stock a laugh and --

:42:54.:43:13.

with Shtokalov and Pervukhin. Marinov at the back, the oldest at

:43:14.:43:22.

48. And in lane seven, Uzbekistan. Kochnev and mur back -- Mirbekov.

:43:23.:43:36.

The first three going into the semifinal. From the heat, the two

:43:37.:43:39.

best crews went through so Brazil are safely in the final, they will

:43:40.:43:47.

both be in the centre lanes providing the stable conditions, as

:43:48.:43:52.

they do today. It was Germany qualifying straight through and

:43:53.:43:56.

Hungary went through in the semifinal. Brazil and Germany are

:43:57.:44:00.

already safely watching from their... Well, from the stands,

:44:01.:44:05.

perhaps. Now it is all about who can be the top three boats in this

:44:06.:44:06.

semifinal. Well, the first strokes are proving

:44:07.:44:18.

effective for Cuba. Australia losing two metres in the first 30, that is

:44:19.:44:23.

not a good start for them and they will have to keep that work rake up

:44:24.:44:27.

to get back on level terms with the leading boat. Good start from

:44:28.:44:31.

Uzbekistan. The camera angle makes it look like they are screaming

:44:32.:44:35.

ahead of the rest of the cruise but it is not a bad run. Uzbekistan of

:44:36.:44:41.

Cuba. On the far side, keep an eye on the black hole of Poland -- the

:44:42.:44:57.

black hull. Settling into their race on the outside, Uzbekistan, looking

:44:58.:45:00.

quite fast and working hard to stay in the race. The Australian pairing

:45:01.:45:06.

not quite able to find the pace they need. This is a tight race. The

:45:07.:45:12.

first three to go through. Poland at the moment sitting in third. Poland

:45:13.:45:24.

have Kaminski, he is a bronze-medallist in 2013, and behind

:45:25.:45:29.

him, Mikel Cutler, built like the proverbial block -- Kudla. Only 18,

:45:30.:45:36.

has he got enough of experienced race at this level? It is about

:45:37.:45:41.

using the experience you have got and putting it into play. You can

:45:42.:45:45.

speak to coaches and get experience but there is a limit, anyone who has

:45:46.:45:50.

been on the stage before will have more in the bag. Russia trying to

:45:51.:45:54.

pull back on Cuba. From the aerial shots, you see how the double canoes

:45:55.:45:57.

weave across the lanes because they are trying to keep the boats as

:45:58.:45:59.

straight as possible. Through the halfway stage. We're

:46:00.:46:11.

looking for a time around 3. 5 minutes, maybe a little longer. The

:46:12.:46:15.

wind has picked up. No lucky losers. That takes some of the luck out.

:46:16.:46:19.

It's all about finishing in the first three. It is still Poland in

:46:20.:46:23.

the danger position at the moment, on the near side, we've got

:46:24.:46:30.

Uzbekistan. The Australians have been left way behind. Finally the

:46:31.:46:36.

years have caught up with them. Cuba, Russia, one and two. They're

:46:37.:46:45.

safe at the moment. We may see Poland come back into this one in

:46:46.:46:49.

lane three. There's a shot of the Poles on the far side. I think it's

:46:50.:46:54.

between them and Uzbekistan. Up to the 750 mark. 250 to go. Uzbekistan

:46:55.:47:01.

starting to make a move. Starting to look very good indeed. Poland want

:47:02.:47:05.

to make it into this A final, they'll have to start making a move

:47:06.:47:09.

now. They're leaving it quite late, almost a boat length behind. I think

:47:10.:47:13.

they will have left themselves too much to do. Uzbekistan looking

:47:14.:47:18.

slower. Their stroke rate going down slightly. We see the Poles, in lane

:47:19.:47:24.

three, coming back, trying to get in that race. They have a boat length

:47:25.:47:28.

to go. They have just 100 metres to make up that time. There's no way

:47:29.:47:32.

that we're going to see Cuba lose this one. They're looking

:47:33.:47:35.

comfortable. Russia, perhaps, in danger. Poland is gaining on the

:47:36.:47:39.

Russians. Poland will have to do something very special in the

:47:40.:47:43.

closing stages. A sprint coming in from Cuba to secure the win here.

:47:44.:47:47.

It's Uzbekistan on the near side who've looked very good over the

:47:48.:47:50.

closing 250. They secure second. Russia in third and Poland are out.

:47:51.:47:56.

They go through to the B final. The leading three go through to the

:47:57.:48:06.

Olympic A final tomorrow morning. A well paced race from cubament they

:48:07.:48:10.

didn't -- Cuba. They didn't want to take any risks. They worked hard

:48:11.:48:14.

over the first 250. They settled nicely then they had something extra

:48:15.:48:16.

to give in the closing stages. Here come Australia. They will also go

:48:17.:48:30.

through to the B final. Martin Marinov, once upon a time Mr

:48:31.:48:40.

Bulgaria. Switched to Australian. Not often you have Mr Universe

:48:41.:48:47.

coming into the paddling arena. Interesting to see his comment for

:48:48.:48:51.

being here was he didn't feel that if Australian crews weren't good

:48:52.:48:55.

enough. We saw the start there. A good shot of the buckets. It looked

:48:56.:48:58.

as though the Australians tried to get away earlier. They're held up by

:48:59.:49:02.

the bucket and that's why they lost two metres in the first 20. Yeah, I

:49:03.:49:06.

mean, it's not going to help. But they were so far back, that you

:49:07.:49:10.

know, they didn't get the time right that. Shows that they've only been

:49:11.:49:15.

in a boat, first time they got in a boat together was to qualify to come

:49:16.:49:19.

here. It takes experience. Experience together. They both have

:49:20.:49:23.

to be very experienced paddlers, but they have to work together. It's all

:49:24.:49:27.

about the timing, understanding how you're going to move and having the

:49:28.:49:34.

calmness in the boats. I wasn't thinking in terms of Australia

:49:35.:49:36.

qualifying, but I was thinking in terms of what can go wrong and what

:49:37.:49:43.

might go wrong for some of the British badlers tomorrow -- paddlers

:49:44.:49:48.

tomorrow. Brazil, Germany the two teams that qualified from the heats

:49:49.:49:52.

earlier on today, they will be the favourites for the gold and silver

:49:53.:49:56.

tomorrow. STUDIO: We will bring that to you,

:49:57.:50:00.

what could be a bumper morning of finals in the canoe sprint. We've

:50:01.:50:03.

covered more miles than the road cyclists today going back and

:50:04.:50:09.

forward from Lagoa, to Diya corpso and we're going there again --

:50:10.:50:14.

Diadoro. It's #40 kilometres from where we are here. The equestrian

:50:15.:50:18.

centre is the focus of the individual jumping today. We've seen

:50:19.:50:22.

Nick Skelton go through clear. The clear round is really important,

:50:23.:50:27.

because the scores from this first round in the individual carry

:50:28.:50:30.

through to the final round. So not only is it important to get you

:50:31.:50:35.

through there, but it will count in the medals shake up later on. We've

:50:36.:50:37.

seen Nick go through. How the medals shake up later on. We've

:50:38.:50:49.

seen Nick go through. how did Ben Maher fare?

:50:50.:50:52.

COMMENTATOR: Gold last time for Ben, that was for the team. Now riding

:50:53.:51:00.

Jayne Clark's 13-year-old Tic Tac. Jayne Clark a tremendous owner for

:51:01.:51:04.

Ben. He of course, was at the top of the world rankings for a number of

:51:05.:51:12.

months. He's always got a top, top horse in his stable. Jayne very much

:51:13.:51:17.

responsible for that. Could Ben Maher equal that clear

:51:18.:51:19.

round of Nick Skelton's? Brilliantly ridden there by Ben.

:51:20.:51:47.

This stallion, 13 years old. Quite a new horse. They're looking at the

:51:48.:51:51.

water. Oh, I thought for a second they were going to flag him in. The

:51:52.:51:53.

flag stays down. Back rail going into the

:51:54.:52:07.

combination. Really can't afford another fence.

:52:08.:52:29.

Well ridden. Could be good enough to get him through into round B.

:52:30.:52:43.

Nothing to add the time table. Hasn't been riding this horse that

:52:44.:52:47.

long, but has formed a classy partnership no doubt about that. He

:52:48.:52:52.

was really unlucky, just clipped the back rail in the combination. Here

:52:53.:52:59.

we go. Didn't quite get up in the air over that fence. Super cool, Ben

:53:00.:53:03.

Maher. He's a proper championship rider. He kept it together. We'll

:53:04.:53:11.

see if that's good enough later on. There's a few competitors to go in

:53:12.:53:15.

the first round of the jumping. Breaking all known speed limits,

:53:16.:53:20.

we're back to Lagoa again and it's the semifinals of the women's K4.

:53:21.:53:25.

The British quartet go in the second of these. There's a final at stake

:53:26.:53:33.

here. COMMENTATOR: Six crews, 50% of them

:53:34.:53:36.

heading to the A final tomorrow. Ukraine should be safe. Kazakhstan,

:53:37.:53:41.

New Zealand will hope they are. Denmark certainly have a chance.

:53:42.:53:45.

Watch out for the Chinese. If they can stay strong through the finish,

:53:46.:53:49.

they have a chance. Just 500 metres. Half the distance that the men race

:53:50.:53:53.

in the K4. Good start from the Chinese. We've seen that time and

:53:54.:53:57.

time again. Denmark got off to a good start. Next to them in lane

:53:58.:54:02.

five, New Zealand looking good. Dedicated K4 crew, been training

:54:03.:54:04.

very hard, all together for this race. The crews on the near side

:54:05.:54:08.

going better. New Zealand are starting to establish a decent lead.

:54:09.:54:12.

They're looking very good. Slow stroke rate but it's long, and

:54:13.:54:21.

effective too. Denmark in the white hull and then Argentina, who have a

:54:22.:54:25.

chance of going through. Ukraine are starting to get strong on rt far

:54:26.:54:28.

side of -- on the far side of New Zealand. New Zealand leading.

:54:29.:54:33.

Denmark second, Ukraine in third. Very tight at the moment between

:54:34.:54:37.

Denmark and Ukraine. New Zealand crew at the front. Now we can see

:54:38.:54:41.

Ukraine coming through, just taking the lead from Denmark. Still New

:54:42.:54:48.

Zealand holding onto the lead here. They're looking comfortable. China

:54:49.:54:53.

starting to make a move. Kazakhstan getting left behind. Argentina are

:54:54.:54:56.

now being raced out of it. It's a question of whether China can get

:54:57.:55:00.

into the top three. They're gaining with every stroke they take. Denmark

:55:01.:55:04.

are the crew in dangerer. They need to be aware of what's going on on

:55:05.:55:07.

the far side. New Zealand are safe. You've crane in second at the

:55:08.:55:10.

moment. Denmark suddenly raise their game, up goes the stroke receipt

:55:11.:55:14.

from Denmark. I think that has -- stroke rate from Denmark that. Has

:55:15.:55:18.

done the damage from Chinese who started their charge a bit too

:55:19.:55:21.

early. New Zealand in one, Ukraine, two and Denmark hang on. But that

:55:22.:55:25.

will have had the Danish fans sweating, because China looked

:55:26.:55:32.

fantastic with 100 to go. Yeah, all about being aware do they know China

:55:33.:55:36.

were coming from the outside. They made the final push. Great

:55:37.:55:39.

performance from New Zealand. They dominated, took it out very hard,

:55:40.:55:43.

got the early lead and led it most of the way. Any reason Carrington

:55:44.:55:50.

doesn't race in the four? This is a dedicated team. They train together.

:55:51.:55:57.

I mean they've done very well out of Carrington's success because extra

:55:58.:56:00.

funding has come into the women's group. They've had more training and

:56:01.:56:04.

more coaching as a dedicated group of K4. It really shows they've spent

:56:05.:56:09.

a lot of time together. We've discussed, this K4 is all about the

:56:10.:56:14.

connection. You can have four great paddlers, if they don't connect

:56:15.:56:18.

together, they won't get the power output they need. From a distance,

:56:19.:56:25.

Jamie Lovatt looks a bit like Lisa Carrington. I know she's been

:56:26.:56:28.

misidentified on a number of occasions. So important that they

:56:29.:56:34.

actually benefit massively from Carrington's fame and her success

:56:35.:56:37.

over the years. But they look good as a crew. Really I guess the point

:56:38.:56:44.

you're making is you can throw four superstars in a K4 and it doesn't

:56:45.:56:47.

necessarily work. Once you have the connection, you have the feel, you

:56:48.:56:51.

know how you all paddle, you know the stroke rates you can achieve

:56:52.:56:54.

throughout the race, then you have a team. Yeah, certainly that is the

:56:55.:56:57.

case. Also, you know, from Carrington's perspective, it might

:56:58.:57:00.

be something she doesn't want to do. She may want to work and dedicate

:57:01.:57:04.

her time very much on her single boat. Lock how dominant she is.

:57:05.:57:11.

Unlike Cosack who seems to be do everything. Sometimes it takes the

:57:12.:57:14.

dedication to get the boats up and running that fast.

:57:15.:57:26.

So, just a few moments before the moment of truth for the women's K4

:57:27.:57:37.

Germany are in this semifinal, as are Poland and Serbia and can da.

:57:38.:57:42.

It's an incredibly tough semifinal. Great Britain goes in lane six.

:57:43.:57:47.

Walker at the front, Cawthorn in three, Simon in through Gurski the

:57:48.:57:51.

power at the back of the boat. They have to get a better start than in

:57:52.:57:55.

the heat if they want to qualify in the top three. They benefit from

:57:56.:57:58.

being in the second semi because they have more rest. I suspect

:57:59.:58:03.

looking at the line-up they would have wanted to be in semifinal

:58:04.:58:07.

number one. It's a far tougher semifinal here in number two. They

:58:08.:58:10.

will have to get out. They've got to stay on their game plan. They will

:58:11.:58:14.

know what the drawing is. They have to be in the top three. It's going

:58:15.:58:17.

to be tight, extremely tight. You talked about the New Zealand K4

:58:18.:58:21.

benefitting from Carrington's success. Will the British female

:58:22.:58:25.

paddlers benefit from the success that the men have had? The whole

:58:26.:58:34.

squad will. They need to have their own success within their group. This

:58:35.:58:41.

is their last chance. A semifinal of the Olympic K4 500 m. They have to

:58:42.:58:46.

get it right off the start. They're in lane six, second from this side,

:58:47.:58:55.

in the black hulled boat. Rachel Cawthorn, who's already raced in the

:58:56.:59:02.

K1. Top three essential if they want a place in the A final tomorrow.

:59:03.:59:08.

Watch the start. That looks better from the British four than they got

:59:09.:59:11.

in the heats. Still Germany edge ahead after the first ten metres.

:59:12.:59:15.

The pink boat of Germany once again streaming away down the course.

:59:16.:59:20.

Germany looking very good. Serbia on the inside of Great Britain in lane

:59:21.:59:24.

number seven, also looking not too bad. There we have it. The Poles

:59:25.:59:29.

looking strong. As well as Canada. It's going to be very tight. Great

:59:30.:59:32.

Britain up there at the moment. Germany leading the way in the

:59:33.:59:37.

middle of your picture. Serbia have gone well. Great Britain sandwiched

:59:38.:59:40.

between two teams that are performing well. Poland in lane

:59:41.:59:43.

four, just on the far side of Germany. Certainly they would expect

:59:44.:59:47.

to go through in the top three. France and Canada are the two teams

:59:48.:59:50.

at top. The French are already out of this. Canada certainly aren't.

:59:51.:59:54.

They're moving into second position now, ahead of Poland. It's still

:59:55.:59:58.

Germany who lead. Great Britain down in fourth. Remember, only the top

:59:59.:00:02.

three go through. Serbia starting to drop away after a good start. It's

:00:03.:00:06.

going to be between Great Britain and Poland for that final qualifying

:00:07.:00:10.

place. No doubt about it, Germany are going to go through. Now Britain

:00:11.:00:16.

start to raise their game. This is the first sign of what they can do.

:00:17.:00:21.

Looking good as they come into the last 100m, it's between Great

:00:22.:00:24.

Britain and Poland. Germany are secure. A last gasp from the

:00:25.:00:29.

Canadian team on the far side. They look strong. Nothing between third

:00:30.:00:35.

and fourth at the moment. Great Britain an advantage of six inches

:00:36.:00:39.

over the Poles. It's Germany who take the win. And Great Britain are

:00:40.:00:43.

through. They have an A final position! That was goal number one

:00:44.:00:49.

today. Now they can start to focus on the A final. That will give them

:00:50.:00:53.

a massive boost. They may not be in for the Gold Medal, but if they can

:00:54.:00:58.

do that and if they can race against Poland and race again Canada, who

:00:59.:01:01.

knows, a bronze medal might be a possibility.

:01:02.:01:07.

Steyn that is certainly where they would expect to be, a completely

:01:08.:01:12.

different crew to the ones we saw in the heats. Fantastic performance

:01:13.:01:18.

from the four of them, it will give them greater strength going into

:01:19.:01:23.

tomorrow's final. The winners of the second heat, Germany will go through

:01:24.:01:26.

to the final as favourites. New Zealand might argue, having won the

:01:27.:01:32.

first semifinal. Great Britain, with Jess Walker and Rachel Cawthorn, who

:01:33.:01:38.

struggled in the 200 and 500, didn't look good in the heat, we have now

:01:39.:01:43.

seen something from them and I think they will be excited.

:01:44.:01:49.

HAZEL IRVINE: And they should become a very strong performance,

:01:50.:01:52.

especially in the last 100m or so from the women and they are safely

:01:53.:01:55.

through. They got through to the London final and they were fifth and

:01:56.:01:59.

with Liam Heath, the fastest qualifier in his event the 200m, and

:02:00.:02:03.

with Brazilian superstars through to their final as well, straight

:02:04.:02:07.

through, there is going to be an awful lot to look forward to when we

:02:08.:02:11.

go back there to Lagoa tomorrow afternoon for the last of the

:02:12.:02:15.

finals. We have been concentrating on events in the equestrian

:02:16.:02:21.

programme, the last event in the inquest equestrian programme, the

:02:22.:02:24.

individual show-jumping. Nick Skelton has gone straight through to

:02:25.:02:28.

the medal jump of later today, the last 20 going through. Ben Maher,

:02:29.:02:33.

four penalties for him after one fence down and we will check on some

:02:34.:02:37.

of the other key competitors. Back we go to Ian and Mike.

:02:38.:02:46.

The second of the Australians, Topps Alexander. Lindsay a tequila. --

:02:47.:02:58.

Tops-Alexander. Ranked 14 in the world. There won't be so many who

:02:59.:03:03.

have ridden so many big jumping horses. She has made some very big

:03:04.:03:10.

partnerships. She has made fourth in a World Championships, in Aachen.

:03:11.:03:16.

She had a lovely horse Allsop and this is another class animal. You

:03:17.:03:29.

are quite correct. Edwina has so many top-class horses to ride. They

:03:30.:03:40.

are all found by her husband, Jan Tops. He finds some of the best you

:03:41.:03:44.

will see and a lot of them go to the Qatari riders. This does suit

:03:45.:03:51.

Edwina's style of riding, a fantastic athlete. Nice active

:03:52.:03:58.

buzzing way of going that really suits Edwina's riding.

:03:59.:04:12.

Total athletic ability down the combination.

:04:13.:04:19.

Just adds up an extra stride, but you can see a little horse with a

:04:20.:04:26.

massive amount of scope. The horses get a bit stronger at this point of

:04:27.:04:31.

the course. She is going to have to fight to get some balance.

:04:32.:04:39.

Third Olympic Games, is it going to be her best. She gives us clear run

:04:40.:04:49.

number two. 14 Great Britain, big -- Big Star and Nick Skelton and the

:04:50.:04:55.

next, Australia's Tops-Alexander with Lintea Tequila. Fantastic

:04:56.:04:59.

round, look at this horse, total athlete, things up into the air,

:05:00.:05:05.

tries over every single fence, and so neat. So a second clear round for

:05:06.:05:08.

Australia. The Netherlands, the man who won

:05:09.:05:29.

Olympic gold individually in Sydney Dubbeldam. But he will have another

:05:30.:05:35.

thing on his mind, probably before he went to bed last night. There

:05:36.:05:40.

aren't many people who have held at one time world, European and Olympic

:05:41.:05:45.

title. He has got two of them, he has got the and the European and he

:05:46.:05:51.

did this on the very good horse produced in Britain, Zenith, a

:05:52.:05:56.

12-year-old. Here is another great horse master, this horse has not

:05:57.:05:59.

looked spectacular this summer until this last week. Hasn't jumped a

:06:00.:06:07.

clear round every time, but he has certainly shown they are pretty well

:06:08.:06:15.

on song. Of one thing for sure about Zenith, he is totally brave. He has

:06:16.:06:20.

got all the scope in the world. He's quite a sharp horse. Sometimes he

:06:21.:06:25.

can have the odd fence he shouldn't really have, but we have talked

:06:26.:06:29.

about this man so many times over the years. He is the ultimate

:06:30.:06:32.

championship, cool, professional rider. He seems to love the pressure

:06:33.:06:40.

of these occasions more than any other rider out there.

:06:41.:06:52.

Safely round the course so far and he has got massive scope, you see

:06:53.:07:07.

there. He has done it. The elite are gathering up, no doubt about it. The

:07:08.:07:12.

world and European champion puts himself in line for the second round

:07:13.:07:21.

in the individual. Well, it is no surprise to see Jeroen Dubbledam

:07:22.:07:25.

coming good. He hasn't jumped that many tears. He has had the odd fence

:07:26.:07:30.

but when it really mattered there, he produced the goods -- jumped that

:07:31.:07:36.

many clears. He is always perfect in his striding and balance and rhythm.

:07:37.:07:39.

Absolutely copybook all the way round.

:07:40.:07:49.

24-year-old Martin Fuchs with this Valinski grey Clooney. Only 24 years

:07:50.:08:04.

old, an outstanding young rider, won the Young European title, landed in

:08:05.:08:09.

the senior ranks and landed in full cry. Got some great results. Looked

:08:10.:08:14.

like a real potential winner of this year's Aachen Grand Prix but he does

:08:15.:08:21.

every now and again look for outs, looks for options to down tools and

:08:22.:08:25.

he did that in the Aachen Grand Prix. Threatened to do it here but

:08:26.:08:28.

he has got through to this final day. Clooney, Martin Fuchs. To land.

:08:29.:08:42.

If you watch Clooney go around, sometimes he gets a bit of lockjaw

:08:43.:08:46.

and decides he might disappear into the opposite direction of where he

:08:47.:08:50.

might go. He is a phenomenally talented horse. Talking about the

:08:51.:09:02.

Swiss team, really hard luck. Springer was qualified to jump and

:09:03.:09:06.

the Swiss had to make a tough decision as to which rider to leave

:09:07.:09:12.

out. That was a hard call to make. Possibly could say with Romain

:09:13.:09:20.

Duguet having 12 faults, it was a bad decision, but it has been made.

:09:21.:09:36.

Just looking as though we weren't going to get too many clears but

:09:37.:09:43.

they are starting to come now. Is this another one? Takes the forward

:09:44.:09:48.

stride, needs to balance. Three clear rounds out of the last four.

:09:49.:09:58.

Clooney, part of the Fuchs dynasty. They have been at the top of Swiss

:09:59.:10:07.

show-jumping for some time and that makes it three clear rounds.

:10:08.:10:13.

Fantastic round from Martin Fuchs and the interesting thing, probably

:10:14.:10:22.

getting one or two more clears at this stage that he wanted, the

:10:23.:10:27.

course builder. What will he built for the next one? One thing is for

:10:28.:10:33.

certain, it will be big. It will have to be tough again otherwise we

:10:34.:10:39.

will have a lot of horses jumping off. Could be excited. The third and

:10:40.:10:44.

final rider for the Swiss coming up and it is the Olympic gold-medallist

:10:45.:10:49.

of London Steve Guerra that and the fabulous, quite small, Nino

:10:50.:11:03.

Dubuisson it. -- Nino des Dubuissonets. He has won a lot of

:11:04.:11:09.

competitions. Nino has been saved for this. Now 15 years old, one of

:11:10.:11:17.

the very best in the world and he has a team of horses which has meant

:11:18.:11:20.

this horse has been saved for this occasion.

:11:21.:11:25.

Show-jumping evolving now onto an amazing level where you build a

:11:26.:11:34.

course that looks so difficult and we are getting one or two clear

:11:35.:11:37.

rounds, more than we might have expected already. You just wonder

:11:38.:11:42.

whether sport is going already, with the level of difficulty that we have

:11:43.:11:57.

already got. Brilliantly well bred, horses now are just operating on a

:11:58.:12:06.

completely different level. This man's father, team manager for the

:12:07.:12:10.

French. They one team gold. On the end of that team jumping, there must

:12:11.:12:17.

have been some thoughts within the team family.

:12:18.:12:23.

So the reigning champion from London. Just want to go. He has

:12:24.:12:35.

nailed it. They very nearly didn't get through the first inspection.

:12:36.:12:40.

Nino was held and brought back. Didn't look at their best, one has

:12:41.:12:46.

to say, but they are in here still and they are looking to retain their

:12:47.:12:51.

title, clear round number 52 Switzerland. Nino des Dubuissonets

:12:52.:12:58.

tries his heart out over every fence. A moment of hesitation --

:12:59.:13:04.

Momen's hesitation coming out of the box, but he knows what to do with

:13:05.:13:08.

his legs to make sure he doesn't have a fence. So the reigning

:13:09.:13:15.

champion is through. Canada's Tiffany Foster. Yes, this is Tripple

:13:16.:13:24.

X, ridden brilliantly to team gold in London but then of course was

:13:25.:13:30.

sold to Canada and Tiffany has a really good partnership with this

:13:31.:13:40.

horse. She has been very consistent right through the Olympic Games

:13:41.:13:47.

rounds. These two really do get on. Tiffany Wright is Tripple X with a

:13:48.:13:51.

lot of pace, a lot of confidence, allows him to run and jump. In the

:13:52.:13:57.

jump off for the bronze medal, she was absolutely flying around --

:13:58.:14:02.

Tiffani rides. The riders and the horses that jumped off for that

:14:03.:14:06.

bronze medal had had a bit more taken out of them than some of the

:14:07.:14:07.

other competitors. This is the last before the first

:14:08.:14:19.

morning break on this individual day.

:14:20.:14:28.

Getting a lot of height, Tripple X, down the combination.

:14:29.:14:36.

Really firing it. That was a horrible moment, I thought Tripple X

:14:37.:14:45.

was going to paddle that oxer. No problems there.

:14:46.:14:53.

Just that last fence. That was hard luck. Rides for the Erik Lamela is

:14:54.:15:07.

stadium -- Eric Lamaze. And Eric Lamaze will be the very last of the

:15:08.:15:11.

35 to come in this last round. I think she will be back but has that

:15:12.:15:17.

last fence down. We had that horrible moment at friends nine,

:15:18.:15:21.

Tripple X looked like it was going to bank the oxer and then just

:15:22.:15:29.

nailed the next oxer perfectly and a horrible last fence. That rustic

:15:30.:15:32.

rail doesn't really set itself up against the background.

:15:33.:15:36.

35 started this individual showjumping and we have 17 to go.

:15:37.:15:41.

We've caught them up. We're about to go live there now to see who can go

:15:42.:15:46.

through. We've seen that Nick Skelton definitely through on Big

:15:47.:15:50.

Star. Ben Maher, four penalties, looking good. Back we go to Ian and

:15:51.:15:59.

Mike for 17 more to go, guys? 23-year-old Lucy Davis, in the

:16:00.:16:03.

bronze medal team in the worlds when the Americans were right in the mix

:16:04.:16:12.

that produced that exciting finish. The Dutch won. They really missed

:16:13.:16:20.

out here. Barron, the horse. A big winner on the Grand Prix circuit in

:16:21.:16:26.

the United States. A 12-year-old. We've been talking about Cornet

:16:27.:16:31.

Obolensky as being an outstanding stallion. For Pleasure was another.

:16:32.:16:37.

Ridden to gold in Sydney. The United States of America then, Lucy Davis.

:16:38.:16:42.

We've got five clear, one on one time fault and five on four. We're

:16:43.:16:46.

looking for 20 to the second round of the individual.

:16:47.:16:59.

That's a strange one. Nice, left five strides up to the third fence.

:17:00.:17:06.

Just flicked it off with the front legs on the back rail. Oh, and miss

:17:07.:17:14.

to the water. We haven't seen too many problems at the water that. Was

:17:15.:17:20.

a dreadful miss there. She got her striding all wrong. Barron didn't

:17:21.:17:25.

know whether to pick up or what to do, jumped straight in the middle of

:17:26.:17:31.

it. It's a great shame. He's been jumping brilliantly this week.

:17:32.:17:34.

Whether she'll continue with the whole course, she's already on the

:17:35.:17:41.

12 faults as you can see. We're expecting that it's going to be

:17:42.:17:45.

clears and possibly four faults that will make it to the top 20. America

:17:46.:17:54.

won that team silver behind the French. They're in high spirits. But

:17:55.:18:00.

that's a bit a disappointing round for their first of three in this

:18:01.:18:06.

final for showjumping. Total of 12. They were inside the time allowed of

:18:07.:18:11.

80 seconds. The time hasn't been a problem.

:18:12.:18:16.

There's those front legs on that back rail at fence three. Then

:18:17.:18:20.

coming to the water, on the wrong stride. Nothing that Barron could do

:18:21.:18:26.

about. It that's a great shame for Lucy. She's had a good week

:18:27.:18:29.

competing here. It's all gone wrong today.

:18:30.:18:46.

Spain's Sergio Alvarez Moya. Karl yo, a horse that Nick Skelton won a

:18:47.:18:53.

team bronze, that was in the European Championship of 2011, down

:18:54.:18:57.

in Madrid. This man jumped right up the world

:18:58.:19:00.

rankings, particularly with the form of this horse. This is his star

:19:01.:19:06.

performer. If you think back, Karlo was a horse that was being

:19:07.:19:11.

considered by Nick Skelton as one of his two possible Olympic rides. Had

:19:12.:19:16.

echose Big Star. That was the right decision. -- he chose Big Star. Most

:19:17.:19:23.

of the horses here between the age of ten and 16. This one is 15.

:19:24.:19:31.

Getting towards the end of his top international career. One of those

:19:32.:19:35.

horses with a lot of energy. He really does try. Great combination

:19:36.:19:39.

these two. Not the biggest horse. He's got a very big heart.

:19:40.:19:47.

That water jump, though we saw Lucy Davis going in it, it has jumped

:19:48.:19:54.

quite well today. They've put a different type of filler at the

:19:55.:19:57.

front of the jump just to get the horses into the air a bit more.

:19:58.:20:05.

Combination, been jumping pretty well so far.

:20:06.:20:16.

Look out for the short distance, the four strides to the last fence.

:20:17.:20:30.

Beautifully ridden. Make it six now for those clear rounds. They'll

:20:31.:20:42.

carry ound to round B and if you're just joining us, those equal of

:20:43.:20:45.

round B would go into a jump-off for medals.

:20:46.:20:50.

Just great to watch Carlo jump. Never stops trying. Always got his

:20:51.:20:57.

ears pricked. Stretches out over that big oxer there. Look at him

:20:58.:21:06.

tuck his front legs up. Hot out there. Yes, ice creams and lollies

:21:07.:21:12.

certainly on today. Sheikh Ali Al Thani, an 11-year-old

:21:13.:21:34.

horse. Already done two World Championships sheikh Ali. He's 33

:21:35.:21:39.

years old. Family steeped in the great tradition in the horse world,

:21:40.:21:45.

great racing family. This, a man that's been predicted to do very

:21:46.:21:47.

well for Qatar. This horse really caught the eye

:21:48.:22:14.

during every round so far. What I love about this horse is so

:22:15.:22:19.

rideable, such a great temperament. At this level, any of the horses

:22:20.:22:24.

that are a bit unruly, the course is so technical, it does make a

:22:25.:22:31.

difference. Snvm Short coming out of the combination.

:22:32.:22:54.

Another one through. Yes, joy in the Qatari camp. We're going to get

:22:55.:23:07.

quite a lot of clear rounds here. We're already up to seven. The way

:23:08.:23:14.

this is looking, you might have to go clear just to get in the next

:23:15.:23:19.

round. I doubt we'll get 20 clears, but you never know. Fantastic clear

:23:20.:23:25.

round from First Devision. Sheikh Ali Al Thani giving the horse a

:23:26.:23:31.

lovely ride all the way. Great shots of the horse, getting up in the air,

:23:32.:23:35.

staying there, finishing the jump off. Everything you want a horse to

:23:36.:23:42.

do. An absolute feast of jumping we're witnessing here. Very happy

:23:43.:23:50.

jockey there. Now France. France have had a great

:23:51.:23:59.

Games, team Gold Medallists and showjumping team Gold Medallists.

:24:00.:24:06.

They came here with high hopes. They immediately lost Brian, the world

:24:07.:24:09.

number one, rides for France. This man came in as a substitute. And

:24:10.:24:18.

what a substitute he's been on this great horse Rahotep de Toscane. His

:24:19.:24:25.

father rode for France in two Olympic Games. This man has put his

:24:26.:24:30.

name up in lights. He's a key part of the French Gold Medal. Can he now

:24:31.:24:36.

push for an individual? Possibly not, just landed short on the water.

:24:37.:24:41.

That was a shame. Seemed to have the stride absolutely spot on.

:24:42.:24:49.

He came in as reserve rider, but he's performed really well this

:24:50.:25:04.

week. Yes, the French rider who's missed out is reportedly not been

:25:05.:25:08.

100% all week. In the end of the day, it may not have been that

:25:09.:25:13.

difficult a choice for the team manager.

:25:14.:25:17.

What a shame, just the water tape. Not sure whether we'll see it again,

:25:18.:25:28.

but it was very, very close. Just an odd millimetre or two that they

:25:29.:25:32.

touched that tape. Here's the replay. Just look and yeah, clearly

:25:33.:25:40.

in, one leg dropping back. Well, the Germans got bronze and

:25:41.:26:16.

this lady was part of. It Hot favourites to get the gold. It

:26:17.:26:27.

hasn't happened. Meredith, American born, married Marcus and has been

:26:28.:26:32.

part of their top sport for many years. This is a horse with such a

:26:33.:26:37.

big jump. Jump the moon this horse, if any horse

:26:38.:26:43.

comfort This, the first of the German riders that we've seen. There

:26:44.:26:47.

are three to come. Can you believe it? Well some drama

:26:48.:27:00.

here. Whether it's pressure or what's going on. But Meredith

:27:01.:27:04.

completely got her stride wrong at the first fence.

:27:05.:27:13.

These riders are under incredible pressure. And Meredith says that's

:27:14.:27:17.

enough for me. She's retired. When a shame. We were so looking forward to

:27:18.:27:24.

watching Fibonacci jump. Absolutely heartbroken there. That's an

:27:25.:27:27.

extraordinary mistake to see at this level of riding. It can happen to

:27:28.:27:35.

anyone. We all do it. She knows. Interesting because if she could

:27:36.:27:39.

have buckled down and gone on, she might have got in on a four. That's

:27:40.:27:44.

a shocking thing to happen. It's a horrible moment. I think for

:27:45.:27:49.

Meredith there, she felt it was all over in terms of her concentration,

:27:50.:27:57.

her balance and rhythm. It shows you in showjumping, everything and

:27:58.:28:01.

anything can happen. It's such a horrible moment. She did really well

:28:02.:28:08.

to stay on board. Definitely. Crying, crying shame, Fibonacci, so

:28:09.:28:13.

many fans worldwide. One of the most extraordinary horses to watch

:28:14.:28:17.

jumping, out of the competition. Hark at the crowd, look at the flags

:28:18.:28:27.

and you'll know who's coming next. They've had great receptions here.

:28:28.:28:33.

Pedro Veniss, a man very well known in Europe, riding Quabri de L' isle.

:28:34.:28:42.

You're tending to think that eight may not get in, particularly if

:28:43.:28:46.

we've got more clear rounds with the big names still to come with this

:28:47.:28:49.

reverse Order of Merit. Seven clears. Five on four and there's one

:28:50.:28:57.

on one time fault as well. That is up to 13 of the 20 that can qualify.

:28:58.:29:04.

Pedro Veniss for Brazil. Quabri de L'isle, this horse

:29:05.:29:41.

impressed us with his technique, athletic ability, so far Pedro very

:29:42.:29:48.

stylish. He's had a tricky stride. Lost his rhythm into the water. Just

:29:49.:29:53.

a few nervy mistakes creeping in with the riders. They're under

:29:54.:29:58.

intense pressure. This competition, it's just as much about the rider's

:29:59.:30:03.

temperament as it is about the horse's jumping ability. Gasps from

:30:04.:30:13.

the crowd. They love their showjumping this week. Still got one

:30:14.:30:15.

more Brazilian rider to come. They still have one Brazilian

:30:16.:30:23.

show-jumper to come. The very experienced de Mirando. It

:30:24.:30:43.

is another one. That makes seven. I still think the fours will get in.

:30:44.:30:51.

George Morris, he has been there inspiration this week. The American

:30:52.:30:56.

trainer at London. The problem is getting into the next round with a

:30:57.:31:00.

number of clears that we have got and the quality of competitors,

:31:01.:31:06.

whether four faults will be competitive to get a medal is

:31:07.:31:12.

another thing. Very fair comment. It is not just about getting into the

:31:13.:31:15.

next round because they are going to add those two rounds together.

:31:16.:31:29.

A lot of young people in this stadium today. So good to see. I

:31:30.:31:35.

wonder how many they will inspire for the future of the support. For

:31:36.:31:56.

Qatar, with Gunder, it is Al Rumaih Ali.

:31:57.:31:56.

The has a good individual record, he won silver in the pan Arabic Games

:31:57.:32:09.

in 2007. Number 24 to go of 35 in this first round of two individual

:32:10.:32:11.

rounds. Amazing to watch Gunder go around,

:32:12.:32:22.

he is an enormous horse, ten-year-old gilding. The

:32:23.:32:30.

interesting thing is Al Rumaihi Ali doesn't really worry about getting

:32:31.:32:36.

inside the time, but this time is a bit more generous. So it will be

:32:37.:32:41.

interesting to see whether he can do that today. You can see the power of

:32:42.:32:47.

this horse over the water. Enormous leap there.

:32:48.:32:59.

Although it is looking like clear rounds are the only thing that are

:33:00.:33:04.

going to get you a medal, we have enough clears, you have got to get

:33:05.:33:10.

inside the time. Every four seconds over the time, you get one time

:33:11.:33:16.

fault. We have spoken much about the time, but it is 80 seconds and he is

:33:17.:33:23.

going to be very close to it. We have got the one on one time fault,

:33:24.:33:28.

that is Alba rucking. -- Alba . It is easy to forget the Saudi

:33:29.:33:48.

Arabians won the bronze medal in the team in London. It just shows you

:33:49.:33:52.

how the Arab team have come to the fore in show-jumping. That was a

:33:53.:33:57.

desperately unlucky fence. Last big vertical. Just caught it in front.

:33:58.:34:07.

You can see what it means to all of the supporters and the team members.

:34:08.:34:11.

That was a really hard luck fence to have. But the Qataris have one clear

:34:12.:34:22.

round so far. Here is one to be reckoned with, Germany's Christian

:34:23.:34:37.

Ahlmann. He has been the world's no-one and this is his fourth

:34:38.:34:43.

Olympic Games. Just got one bronze medal to his credit, out in Athens,

:34:44.:34:48.

but at their best, this partnership could easily be in contention for

:34:49.:34:52.

one of those three individual medals.

:34:53.:35:04.

All these riders have very distinctive styles. Christian

:35:05.:35:10.

Ahlmann with the long rains, very tall man, sits very upright in the

:35:11.:35:19.

saddle. Taloubet, 16 now and in this heat, is he going to have the jump

:35:20.:35:26.

that we have always come to expect from him? He is a fantastically

:35:27.:35:28.

efficient, effective jumping horse. Interesting in the team competition,

:35:29.:35:49.

the Germans were way out in front and then nonobvious, Christian

:35:50.:35:56.

Ahlmann included, could jump, but he is looking good here. Christian

:35:57.:36:09.

Ahlmann cruises through on a horse his late father-in-law was

:36:10.:36:23.

responsible for breeding. Married to a world-class show-jumper. This is

:36:24.:36:28.

the round we expect from Taloubet. Big horse, but very, very neat.

:36:29.:36:33.

Knows whether polls are, tucks his legs up. -- he knows where the Poles

:36:34.:36:37.

are. Immaculate technique. Totally understand Andy's thoughts

:36:38.:36:52.

about those four going forward. Eight now are clear and eight on

:36:53.:36:58.

four and one with one time fault. I think the chances of the eight

:36:59.:37:03.

jumping again are unlikely. Now France's superstar, with now and

:37:04.:37:10.

Olympic gold to his credit. Former Olympic champion, it is Kevin Staut

:37:11.:37:17.

with Reveur de Hurtebise. France did jump quite brilliantly in that final

:37:18.:37:29.

jump team day to win gold. And this, a man who has huge class and a horse

:37:30.:37:34.

here that has taken him to the world's no-one on several different

:37:35.:37:42.

occasions. -- number one. It is all about contrast things styles, after

:37:43.:37:52.

the upright seat of Ahlmann, very light in his seat. Using a bit too

:37:53.:37:57.

much pace. That one has gone. We haven't had too many problems with

:37:58.:38:01.

the style. I think anyone looking to win the gold medal has got to jump

:38:02.:38:04.

clear in this round, we have got too many of them.

:38:05.:38:29.

Good round, but one is going to be expected if medals are required.

:38:30.:38:41.

Total four for the Frenchman Kevin Staut. Down to the last nine now and

:38:42.:38:56.

one more to come for France and that is Roger Yves Bost. Just another

:38:57.:39:00.

hard luck story there. Just a bit forward, that big vertical after the

:39:01.:39:01.

water. United States of America, the first

:39:02.:39:25.

of the double gold-medallists' effort to make it three, McLain Ward

:39:26.:39:39.

with Azur. They have looked in good enough form to go all the way. They

:39:40.:39:44.

played a big part in that team medal, the silver medal, and this is

:39:45.:39:53.

a man who had the wonderful horse Sapphire, who took into those two

:39:54.:39:56.

Olympic golds. Plassey rider, very good on the big occasion. One of

:39:57.:40:01.

those that grows taller when it really matters -- Plassey rider.

:40:02.:40:10.

McLain Ward, then, and the talented Azur. Definitely before these

:40:11.:40:21.

championships started here at the Olympics, everyone was tipping this

:40:22.:40:22.

combination for the gold medal. I want to see horse jump with

:40:23.:40:33.

extravagant style and incredible and power -- if you want to, keep your

:40:34.:40:37.

eyes on this one. McLain Ward is a total

:40:38.:40:53.

perfectionist, the way he sits on his horse. And he has had at fence.

:40:54.:41:01.

There is another bit of drama for you, one of the big favourites going

:41:02.:41:08.

out. This is a horse with incredible power, just didn't back up and stay

:41:09.:41:13.

careful coming out of the combination. It won't matter now,

:41:14.:41:20.

but was so good against the clock. Show-jumping, famously difficult to

:41:21.:41:25.

predict and yet again, one of the favourites faltering.

:41:26.:41:32.

CHEERING . The Americans would want to come

:41:33.:41:39.

and that is Kent Farrington. He is another one who could well keep the

:41:40.:41:42.

American flag flying. Just having a few more looks at Azur

:41:43.:41:56.

jumping. That is a great shame for the American team. They really

:41:57.:42:01.

thought Azur could come here and win the individual gold medal.

:42:02.:42:07.

Well, the cheers weren't for McLain Ward, they are for the next in, the

:42:08.:42:14.

great Albar Doda De Miranda. My man with two bronze medals, in Atlanta

:42:15.:42:32.

and in Sydney. A big part of the Brazilian team in those days.

:42:33.:42:37.

Roderigo disappointed to be a reserve rider here, but this man,

:42:38.:42:42.

could he give the clear round the crowd would love to keep Brazil in

:42:43.:42:46.

with a chance of an individual medal?

:42:47.:42:52.

This is a brilliant horse to watch, ten years old, not the typical grey

:42:53.:43:04.

that we associate with Cornet Obolensky. Immaculate technique,

:43:05.:43:12.

immaculate style. That has gone. The Brazilians not having the day they

:43:13.:43:18.

wanted. Just nerves and pressure creeping in here. Some of the big

:43:19.:43:20.

names having the odd silly fence. The foot faults -- the full suck at

:43:21.:43:46.

all different fences. But no problems there. -- the faults have

:43:47.:44:00.

all come at different fences. Pedro Veniss had four and now Doda De

:44:01.:44:08.

Miranda has had new merit for. Speak -- had four. For any British fans

:44:09.:44:12.

watching, Nick Skelton got his clear round. Any time one of these

:44:13.:44:17.

combinations hits a poll, that helps his cause. But we still have a good

:44:18.:44:23.

number of clears. We have, eight of them. One time fault for the

:44:24.:44:43.

Argentine mal virus. -- for the Argentine. It is not going to be

:44:44.:44:47.

more than four. And in comes the last challenge for the Germans in

:44:48.:44:53.

this first round. Any equality after the first two rounds and we go to

:44:54.:45:00.

jump off. I think the odds on that happening are very low. A total of

:45:01.:45:05.

20 riders going through to that second individual round. 35-year-old

:45:06.:45:14.

Daniel Deusser, riding First Class. This is a man who has already had

:45:15.:45:24.

some great victories, eighth in the worlds. He has won the cup finals,

:45:25.:45:31.

he writes for the all conquering stables from Belgium -- he rides. It

:45:32.:45:33.

is his Olympic debut. Incredibly powerful horse. You can

:45:34.:46:20.

see there, Daniel Deusser had to sit up. A great technician. Not the

:46:21.:46:27.

easiest horse to ride, because he is so long. Towards the end of the

:46:28.:46:33.

course, you'll see a lot of upper body strength from Daniel to try and

:46:34.:46:35.

hold him together. Throes his back legs up behind him

:46:36.:46:53.

-- throws. Brilliantly ridden by Daniel Deusser to keep him together.

:46:54.:46:59.

Germ any already with one clear round from Christian Ahlmann. Is it

:47:00.:47:15.

going to be two? Yerm any really looking to amend for not getting

:47:16.:47:20.

gold. They did get the bronze. But they expected gold. Is it going to

:47:21.:47:26.

be today for the Germans? What an incredible piece of riding from this

:47:27.:47:31.

top, top professional, Daniel Deusser. A horse with incredible

:47:32.:47:36.

ability, had a little bit of a tricky moment there, at the double.

:47:37.:47:41.

Holding his horse together, between hands and legs. Using his upper

:47:42.:47:48.

body. Germans now with two clear rounds.

:47:49.:48:06.

We've got six left to jump in round A of the individual. The next jumped

:48:07.:48:21.

in Germany for many years, Rene Tebbel, here representing Ukraine,

:48:22.:48:24.

three times national champion in Germany. Couldn't get the

:48:25.:48:27.

recognition he expected internationally. So he chose to

:48:28.:48:36.

accept the invitation to ride for the Ukraine. Just the one rider

:48:37.:48:43.

through for them. This is a horse that really impressed. He's a man

:48:44.:48:47.

would won the King George trophy at hoik stead.

:48:48.:48:58.

-- at Hickstead. Certainly plenty of experience. There's

:48:59.:49:01.

Rene Tebbel knocking up the clear rounds this week with this big,

:49:02.:49:21.

powerful jumper. He can get quite strong. Tebbel does a great job of

:49:22.:49:28.

holding him in balance all the way round.

:49:29.:49:46.

Certainly this course is proving to be perhaps a little bit easier, one

:49:47.:49:52.

or two more clear rounds than we might have expected. So we're going

:49:53.:49:59.

to have to ramp it up in the next round to sort out these final

:50:00.:50:04.

riders, whether we're going to have a jump-off or not remains to be

:50:05.:50:09.

seen. We've got another clear. Oh, he's over the time, just. The second

:50:10.:50:14.

one with a time fault. The other one was the Argentinian. The interesting

:50:15.:50:22.

thing about that one time fault, it could be very, very influential in

:50:23.:50:26.

final placings. Definitely. With so many clear rounds, that time fault

:50:27.:50:32.

is so expensive. Really round this track, you'd say unnecessary. That's

:50:33.:50:37.

a great shame. For Rene Tebbel. He's jumped so well all the way through

:50:38.:50:47.

this week. I would think he'd be very happy that he'd changed his

:50:48.:50:49.

country to Ukraine. A man here who made his debut 20

:50:50.:51:17.

years ago in an Olympic Games. It is the great Bosty, Roger Yves Bost,

:51:18.:51:23.

European champion in 2013. He's had a lot of changes of horse power,

:51:24.:51:28.

horses retired and some no longer available for him to ride. But he

:51:29.:51:38.

still maintains his form. It is Sydney Une Prince that Bosty rides.

:51:39.:51:49.

Again Roger pulled out all the stops. I think his round was

:51:50.:51:54.

probably the most crucial round of all for that Gold Medal for France.

:51:55.:52:01.

It wasn't only the most crucial, it was the most entertaining to watch,

:52:02.:52:05.

because those of you who have been watching this week and in the past

:52:06.:52:11.

will know that Bosty as we call him, is a totally unique horseman.

:52:12.:52:16.

Sometimes he looks untidy, but what he does, he gets his horses to try

:52:17.:52:23.

so hard for him. He's such a big winner all over the world. The

:52:24.:52:34.

flying Frenchman, Bosty. Watch him picking his horse up, throws his

:52:35.:52:38.

body about, but he's clear again through the combination.

:52:39.:52:47.

Just gets a bit erratic, untidy. He's hanging in.

:52:48.:53:00.

Come on, Bosty. The last fence. He's done it. France have got another

:53:01.:53:17.

through. The great Roger Yves Bost. He keeps his chances of an Olympic

:53:18.:53:27.

individual medal alive. Bosty there, such a lovely guy. The horses jump

:53:28.:53:31.

for him, try their heart out. He's ridden so many different horses over

:53:32.:53:35.

the years. They all win for him and jump brilliantly. Look at that shot

:53:36.:53:39.

over the water tray! Quite extraordinary. A style all of his

:53:40.:53:49.

own. The task to win medals gets stronger and stronger. There is

:53:50.:53:56.

Rozzier, a man who started as the reserve rider. But he's been in

:53:57.:54:04.

this. He had one down. Kevin Stout, he had one down. That is good news

:54:05.:54:08.

for France with Roger Yves Bost staying clear. Another American

:54:09.:54:18.

rider who many think could be an Olympic medal winner, could even be

:54:19.:54:22.

gold. They got through to a jump-off against the clock, there would be a

:54:23.:54:26.

lot of people's money going on this man, Kent Farrington, 35 years old,

:54:27.:54:32.

on this horse, Voyeur. They were part of the Silver Medal team for

:54:33.:54:41.

the worlds. Now what can Kent Farrington do?

:54:42.:54:48.

I think this day's competition now is all down to the course builder.

:54:49.:54:53.

He's going to have to do something extraordinary to separate all these

:54:54.:54:57.

clear rounds in the next round, otherwise we really are going to be

:54:58.:55:01.

in for some kind a jump-off. Maybe that's what the crowd want to see.

:55:02.:55:05.

Quite often it is just purely jumping. The way this is looking, we

:55:06.:55:12.

could be seeing these world class riders galloping flat out over

:55:13.:55:14.

massive Over massive jumps later today. In

:55:15.:55:27.

this man gets in a jump-off, he's a flying machine. The horse loves the

:55:28.:55:38.

big arenas. Those of you who saw the Grand Prix at the royal Windsor

:55:39.:55:44.

horse show in May will have seen this man win the big Bahrain trophy

:55:45.:55:46.

for that Grand Prix. It's OK. Easy peesy. Kent Farrington

:55:47.:56:02.

cruises through to the next round on a clear. We've got 11 clear rounds,

:56:03.:56:11.

two on the one time fault and it looks as if the four faults, all of

:56:12.:56:15.

them will go through. That would give us more than 20. Really

:56:16.:56:25.

effective round there. Just one touch, second to last fence. There

:56:26.:56:33.

he is, neat as a pin over the last. Three to come. Peder Fredricson for

:56:34.:56:39.

Sweden, Maikel Van der Vleuten for the Dutch and Eric Lamaze the last

:56:40.:56:41.

for Canada. They could -- they could all go clear.

:56:42.:56:52.

Peder first. Sweden got through to the final, eight teams in that final

:56:53.:57:03.

leg. That on Wednesday. Now can he give Sweden a glimmer of hope of a

:57:04.:57:14.

medal? Sweden, at the moment, Von Echermann had two down for Sweden.

:57:15.:57:21.

Peder Fredricson the only other representative for Sweden.

:57:22.:57:30.

So far, in every round, All In hasn't put a foot wrong. He's

:57:31.:57:36.

incredibly consistent in his jump. That's the way to jump the water.

:57:37.:58:07.

All looking good for All In. We'd like to see him in the next round.

:58:08.:58:21.

So impressive. They are jumping this course for fun. They have a task on

:58:22.:58:31.

their hands to sort out what are now 12 clear rounds, two on one and four

:58:32.:58:38.

faults makes 25 in all now that would be four or better. No surprise

:58:39.:58:44.

to see Peder Fredricson going through. All In has jumped

:58:45.:58:51.

immaculately every round so far. These clear rounds racking up, it's

:58:52.:58:54.

quite extraordinary. I think the next round is going to have to be

:58:55.:58:58.

really, really difficult to try and separate them. Big job for the

:58:59.:59:08.

course builder. Certainly is. But he has done a massive job here. I've no

:59:09.:59:12.

doubt that his skills will do the job again. Now the Dutchman. Maikel

:59:13.:59:26.

Van der Vleuten. They've already got the world an European individual

:59:27.:59:32.

champion clear with Zenith. Now what can this man, who was jumping off

:59:33.:59:43.

for the team gold for the Dutch in London, Britain, of course, beat

:59:44.:59:48.

them. He has an Olympic team silver to his credit and a world gold in

:59:49.:59:52.

that team in France, in Normandy and the Europeans last year. Very

:59:53.:59:56.

talented with his super stallion, Verdi.

:59:57.:00:05.

Verdi has been such a strong, solid member of the Dutch team now for,

:00:06.:00:15.

well, four or five years. He's one of those horses that goes round the

:00:16.:00:18.

course, always seems to make it look quite easy. Not the most expansive

:00:19.:00:25.

jumper. Normally very efficient. Living dangerously. Runs in the yard

:00:26.:00:52.

with his father, himself an international rider of tremendous

:00:53.:01:01.

repute. They make a great partnership in producing horses. The

:01:02.:01:02.

Germans have got as well? -- have got two clear, are

:01:03.:01:17.

the Dutch going to as well? Doctor B. Not the first time it has

:01:18.:01:28.

happened -- not to be. Verdi gets his head down and that is a

:01:29.:01:32.

difficult offence to jump on this particular horse because he got

:01:33.:01:39.

stronger, ran down that last line. That is why it has built at the end

:01:40.:01:44.

of the course, when the horse gets a little bit forward and a little bit

:01:45.:01:48.

strong. And you can see there, very tough for van der Vleuten. His

:01:49.:01:53.

balance had gone completely. Disappointed for the Dutch because

:01:54.:01:57.

he didn't look like touching a fence up until that point. It is a little

:01:58.:02:04.

bit how the Dutch Olympics have gone here. But the man who knows what it

:02:05.:02:11.

is to win individual Olympic gold, did it with the great horse

:02:12.:02:16.

Hickstead in Hong Kong Beijing in 2008. He is back again. Erik Lamela

:02:17.:02:27.

is has been in tremendous form the hit -- Eric Lamaze has been in

:02:28.:02:33.

tremendous form here and when he has the bit between his teeth, anything

:02:34.:02:36.

is possible. That is typical Eric Lamaze, riding

:02:37.:02:55.

with so much pace, a lot of dash. One of those riders that can ride

:02:56.:02:59.

with pace, you can see the stride from such a long, long way away but

:03:00.:03:05.

it actually seems to make the horse jump in the a even more. -- in the

:03:06.:03:15.

air. Terrific skill. You can hear him talking to his horse.

:03:16.:03:33.

Needs to fight for a bit of balance here. Has he got it? He has. Canada

:03:34.:03:46.

more than happy enough with that. Eric Lamaze joins the list of

:03:47.:03:53.

clears. 13 of them. Is it going to be unlucky. One? -- for someone.

:03:54.:04:04.

Tremendous round, 13 have gone clear in round A, including this man, Eric

:04:05.:04:13.

Lamaze. So a fascinating position. 13 clear,

:04:14.:04:29.

two with one time fault. Surely the Olympic individual medals are going

:04:30.:04:34.

to come from somewhere within those 14 competitors. Make sure you are

:04:35.:04:36.

with us for the second round. HAZEL IRVINE: 5:30pm roughly for

:04:37.:04:44.

that second round. Nick Skelton clear and as you heard from Mike,

:04:45.:04:50.

one of 13 horse and rider is combinations that are clear. Ben

:04:51.:04:54.

Maher will start on four penalties and it is significant, because it is

:04:55.:04:58.

the penalties from this first round that are carried forward into the

:04:59.:05:01.

second, so everything counts from here on in. Great Britain have not

:05:02.:05:07.

won an individual show-jumping medal since 1972, so hopefully Nick or Ben

:05:08.:05:11.

can buck the trend in that respect. I bring you news of a diplomatic

:05:12.:05:16.

incident, there has been rumbling here in Brazil for a few days. You

:05:17.:05:20.

are probably well aware of the story featuring six time Olympic

:05:21.:05:23.

gold-medallist Ryan Lochte and his three mates, who allege they were

:05:24.:05:29.

held up and robbed at gunpoint in a taxi on the way home to the Olympic

:05:30.:05:33.

Village the other night. CCTV footage has emerged of them at a

:05:34.:05:36.

petrol station and it appears there has been a little bit bad behaviour,

:05:37.:05:41.

criminal damage has been alleged and it turns out there has been a of

:05:42.:05:47.

mendacity perhaps going on and Ryan Lochte has just issued an apology.

:05:48.:05:52.

It says, "I want to apologise for my behaviour last weekend, but not

:05:53.:05:56.

being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early

:05:57.:05:59.

morning and in my role of taking away the focus from any athletes

:06:00.:06:04.

fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympic Games."

:06:05.:06:10.

Jimmy Fagan has agreed to pay around ?8,000 to a sporting charity and

:06:11.:06:14.

having done so, he will now be given his passport back by the authorities

:06:15.:06:18.

and are allowed to return home to America. The other three are already

:06:19.:06:23.

there. The American Olympic Association has apologised

:06:24.:06:26.

unreservedly for their behaviour. It is a long-running saga and the end

:06:27.:06:31.

is inside. Another long-running saga has been men's 50 K walk. Around 31

:06:32.:06:38.

miles in old money, as it were, the longest athletics event of the lot

:06:39.:06:44.

in the Olympics and it has been one bite Slovakia. He overtook Jared tal

:06:45.:06:51.

of Australia in the closing few moments of that race and all of

:06:52.:06:55.

Australia had been hoping that Jared would come across the line first.

:06:56.:07:01.

This is the man who officially won his gold medal four years ago in

:07:02.:07:06.

London, but he was only given it in a ceremony last month after Russia's

:07:07.:07:20.

Kiryakin was found with a positive test. Upgraded to gold. And it was

:07:21.:07:30.

Hirai coming in third. Eamon Dunphy collapsed on the line but we hope he

:07:31.:07:36.

is OK. We are going to Olympic head kicking and body kicking, otherwise

:07:37.:07:40.

known as tae kwon do. What a fantastic sport this has proved to

:07:41.:07:43.

be and I know you are really enjoying it. Jade Jones has

:07:44.:07:48.

significantly achieved a wonderful ambition of coming -- becoming a

:07:49.:07:53.

two-time Olympic champion, last night and we have seen Lutalo

:07:54.:07:56.

Mohammad go through to the quarterfinals but the intriguing

:07:57.:08:00.

part about this men's 80 kilograms category is that it also contains

:08:01.:08:04.

Aaron Cook. The Dorchester born fighter was the world 11 going into

:08:05.:08:09.

the 2012 Games four years ago but was overlooked it by Lutalo Mohammad

:08:10.:08:20.

and said he felt cheated and robbed and soon after those Olympics, he

:08:21.:08:27.

accepted an invitation to become a Moldovan athlete and he is here

:08:28.:08:31.

representing them. A lot of frustration boiling up, you sense,

:08:32.:08:36.

for his first round today and he was fighting Wel-Ting Liu Chinese

:08:37.:08:36.

Taipei. -- of Chinese Taipei. Aaron Cook with something to prove

:08:37.:08:56.

here. He said he wants to progress through this round. Very quick on

:08:57.:09:03.

his feet. Footwork is fantastic, moving forwards and backwards. Goes

:09:04.:09:06.

for the power punch, doesn't land it.

:09:07.:09:12.

Kicks to the head are what the fighters are looking for. They are

:09:13.:09:24.

going to score three points. To the body, just a single point.

:09:25.:09:32.

Using that push kick just to gauge distance.

:09:33.:09:39.

Both counteract each other there. He is rangy, and that can prove

:09:40.:09:47.

damaging, Wel-Ting Liu. No mug, quarterfinals of the World

:09:48.:09:52.

Championships issue. Asian championships silver and

:09:53.:09:56.

bronze-medallists as well. One of the coaches getting involved. Some

:09:57.:10:04.

movements that quite often can be a score doesn't happen on this

:10:05.:10:08.

occasion. It is a match judge that has pushed the button. They will

:10:09.:10:15.

talk to the mat judges and if two of them have seen something, it will be

:10:16.:10:18.

awarded. Did you see anything? The power punch to the body was

:10:19.:10:24.

significant, but didn't register. Aaron Cook came in, close range,

:10:25.:10:32.

power punch to the body. Yes, there is your one point. Aaron Cook is on

:10:33.:10:40.

the scoreboard. That must have been some powerful punch because it has

:10:41.:10:44.

been very difficult to score with punches to the body throughout this

:10:45.:10:52.

Olympic tournament. Into day three of Olympic tae kwon do action in Rio

:10:53.:10:57.

2016, he has watched all of that, but Aaron Cook is able to get

:10:58.:11:00.

through, that is the sort of quality athlete we are talking about. There

:11:01.:11:07.

is no athlete may be in Rio that carries the same motivation that

:11:08.:11:13.

Aaron Cook does to succeed. He took his training away from the National

:11:14.:11:20.

setup. Another body shot. Wel-Ting Liu gets inside Cook and we are all

:11:21.:11:25.

square heading towards the end of the first round. Knocks him to the

:11:26.:11:29.

ground and there will be a warning against Cook and Moldova, which

:11:30.:11:34.

won't lead to anything before the bell. They sit down all tied up and

:11:35.:11:40.

he didn't necessarily see that coming, a great body shot from

:11:41.:11:43.

Wel-Ting Liu and we have a game on our hands here. That is right, Cook

:11:44.:11:50.

has just conceded going into this break. Another one of those and he

:11:51.:11:54.

will concede a point. You can see here from the overhead shot the

:11:55.:12:00.

distance between the two fighters. Gets his head round quick. Aaron

:12:01.:12:06.

Cook looking for the spinning kick to the body, doesn't quite come off.

:12:07.:12:16.

There is the first to the chest. You are saying about his training. He

:12:17.:12:21.

does his training with a guy called Nick Clegg, the father of Mark and

:12:22.:12:26.

Sean, two format International weightlifters and I believe that

:12:27.:12:29.

other brother played for Manchester United for a period of time. They

:12:30.:12:37.

are giving quality strength and conditioning advice for Aaron Cook

:12:38.:12:40.

who does look very strong against a competitor five inches taller.

:12:41.:12:48.

Nothing in this. Aaron Cook, number two in the world for Moldova, not

:12:49.:12:52.

his native Great Britain, against Wel-Ting Liu of Chinese Taipei,

:12:53.:12:57.

number 15 in the world coming in. Almost got the last spot, the very

:12:58.:13:07.

last spot available. He earned it and he is holding its own.

:13:08.:13:24.

Footwork from Aaron Cook really good. Just moving far enough away so

:13:25.:13:33.

he could make contact and then coming straight back in. The scores

:13:34.:13:34.

remain at one apiece. Cracking head shot, nearly took the

:13:35.:13:49.

head guard off Aaron Cook. Three points. That shook Aaron Cook up big

:13:50.:13:58.

time, the headset nearly did disappear and it really shook him

:13:59.:14:02.

up. This is not 40 plan. He didn't want to be in this position. He

:14:03.:14:07.

would have backed himself to be aggressive and get score in early,

:14:08.:14:11.

but it is the opposite. Far too far from the finish for Liu to consider

:14:12.:14:18.

defending this but why would he. He has landed more blows than his

:14:19.:14:21.

opponent, using his extra reach and his rangy style. Cook goes with the

:14:22.:14:28.

spinning work to the body to try and get more points. The atmosphere is

:14:29.:14:31.

amazing inside the arena. Everybody is well aware of the back story to

:14:32.:14:37.

Aaron Cook and how long he has waited to do this. He will have a

:14:38.:14:44.

minute to wait in a moment before the third round begins. Goodness

:14:45.:14:49.

knows what is going through his mind. So how about that? Chinese

:14:50.:14:54.

Taipei with the lead 4-1 at the second sit down. Liu going into the

:14:55.:15:02.

third round not with a nice advantage, not put too much of a

:15:03.:15:06.

cushion. Definitely in striking distance for Aaron Cook but Aaron is

:15:07.:15:10.

now under pressure. He is going to need to come out and show us what he

:15:11.:15:14.

is made of in this third and final round. He has got to show us what he

:15:15.:15:20.

is made up, pick up some points. The attempt at the chop kick the bear.

:15:21.:15:24.

-- there. Can't quite hear the words from the

:15:25.:15:45.

coach but the look on the face on Aaron Cook says this is desperation

:15:46.:15:50.

stakes. This is an interesting -- as interesting moment we have had on

:15:51.:15:55.

the mat since the rounds and later stages of qualification. Aaron Cook

:15:56.:16:01.

of Moldova with some work to do against Wel-Ting Liu of Chinese

:16:02.:16:02.

Taipei. Both fighters very dynamic in their

:16:03.:16:13.

movements. Coming in with intent. Power punch from Aaron Cook, doesn't

:16:14.:16:15.

score again. That one score on the board is from

:16:16.:16:27.

a punch not a kick. He hasn't made any contact. Tries up high, happy

:16:28.:16:30.

with the body. Collects nothing. Goes to ground. With that a penalty

:16:31.:16:35.

goes again Cook. The lead becomes four now to Liu. High drama here.

:16:36.:16:44.

Again, goes with the fist. This time does score. But he's going to need a

:16:45.:16:46.

lot of those in a minute-and-a-half. Back kick attempt to the body,

:16:47.:16:58.

doesn't come off. Nice covering from Liu. Multiple kicks coming in now.

:16:59.:17:05.

Those turning kicks not quite making contact. Giving away 13 centimetres

:17:06.:17:12.

and having a great effect here. He can't get near his man, who's

:17:13.:17:17.

standing in the middle of the mat and defending well. Happy to give

:17:18.:17:21.

away the penalty to score. The penalty is there, but the score is

:17:22.:17:26.

not. 6-2 inside the last minute. Chinese Taipei against Moldova here.

:17:27.:17:31.

Aaron Cook formerly of Great Britain, a man who was number one in

:17:32.:17:36.

the world at 19 years of age. He's been waiting for his opportunity.

:17:37.:17:39.

He's in all sorts of trouble here. Liu again upstairs. Wonderful

:17:40.:17:43.

manoeuvre that. Takes Cook to the head. Now 11-2. We get a review. The

:17:44.:17:50.

Moldovan coach has come in perhaps on Aaron's say so to review what,

:17:51.:17:54.

I'm not sure. He's claiming it wasn't a kick to the face. You've

:17:55.:17:58.

got to challenge it I guess. We're running out of time. Not only did he

:17:59.:18:04.

get three points for the kick to the head, but one point as well. Aaron

:18:05.:18:11.

Cook in real trouble right now. No time at all for the review to be

:18:12.:18:16.

knocked back. 11-2. He's only made scoring contact with his opponent

:18:17.:18:20.

with the power punches to the body. Spinning and trying to claim points

:18:21.:18:23.

now. The card's gone. He can't use it as he put the hand up. Thought he

:18:24.:18:28.

made contact, didn't. Cook spinning, spinning, has to go high quality. He

:18:29.:18:32.

has to get high scores. He hasn't been able to get near his man.

:18:33.:18:38.

Cook's helmet has come off. It's got to be all over. Inside the third

:18:39.:18:43.

round. The 12-point margin is enough. You're looking at it. 14-2.

:18:44.:18:50.

A massive upset on the taekwondo mat, congratulations to Wei-Ting Liu

:18:51.:18:56.

of Chinese Taipei, the it 1-year-old has -- 21-year-old has beaten the

:18:57.:18:59.

number two in the world, Aaron Cook, the former world number one, the man

:19:00.:19:04.

who had so much motivation here. He changed nations to get on the mat

:19:05.:19:11.

and he wanted gold and nothing less. Well, unless Liu continues through,

:19:12.:19:14.

Aaron Cook's Olympic Games are over right.

:19:15.:19:19.

There -- right there. You don't need me to say, that

:19:20.:19:22.

wasn't the result you wanted today. What went wrong? It's heart

:19:23.:19:27.

breaking, absolutely heart breaking. Obviously, I'm really happy that I'm

:19:28.:19:30.

here and I got the opportunity to fight. But oh, my God. I just went

:19:31.:19:37.

down too early with the head shot. I knew he was bigger that. Was the

:19:38.:19:43.

game plan to move away and keep it tight and steal underneath. A couple

:19:44.:19:46.

of shots didn't go my way in the first little bit. He got ahead. I

:19:47.:19:51.

had to chase. I just got caught every time I was trying to spin.

:19:52.:19:56.

Gutted. We know from what you went through in the build up to London

:19:57.:20:00.

2012 how difficult that was time as the emotions you've been through.

:20:01.:20:03.

How much of that was on your mind coming out here today, eight years

:20:04.:20:05.

since your last Olympics? Not too much. I was really excited when I

:20:06.:20:09.

was in the back, I was relaxed. I was warming up good. I felt really

:20:10.:20:15.

good this morning. Oh, why did I have a day like that at the

:20:16.:20:19.

Olympics? Yeah, just soul destroying. Got to pick myself up

:20:20.:20:23.

and I'll keep trying. Yeah, keep trying. Obviously, you've switched

:20:24.:20:27.

over and competing for Moldova at these Games, for those that don't

:20:28.:20:31.

know the story, how has that come about and what has it been like

:20:32.:20:36.

since switching from GB. Obviously the disappointment from London, I

:20:37.:20:39.

was number one in the world an I didn't get the opportunity to fight

:20:40.:20:45.

in London. Didn't see a pathway with GB and Moldova gave me this amazing

:20:46.:20:50.

opportunity and I'm just so... I feel I've let everyone down. Yeah,

:20:51.:20:55.

I'm absolutely gutted. I'm really sorry, because yeah, I know everyone

:20:56.:21:00.

had high hopes. I myself had high hopes. I'm really devastated. You'll

:21:01.:21:06.

be back for Tokyo, maybe the repecharge? We'll see. Erm......

:21:07.:21:11.

Yeah. Of course, I'll be back. But erm... This really hurts, so take

:21:12.:21:15.

some time. Thanks. Can you see it really hurts. It

:21:16.:21:21.

might not be over though, there is a rule in taekwondo, all athletes

:21:22.:21:26.

beaten by a finalist go into a repecharge for bronze. So a

:21:27.:21:31.

British-born fighter, fighting for Moldova, cheering on his opponent

:21:32.:21:34.

from Chinese Taipei, in the hope that he gets to the final, fight for

:21:35.:21:37.

gold. If he does he, will then get a chance to fight for bronze.

:21:38.:21:42.

Confused.com? Definitely. Other websites are available, by the way.

:21:43.:21:49.

Hands up if you remember 1988, the men's hockey Gold Medal? Sean Curly

:21:50.:21:54.

and Barry gafs, where were the Germans? Frankly who cares, we

:21:55.:21:58.

remember it well. 28 years later, it's the women who have the chance

:21:59.:22:01.

to go for gold. First time they've ever made it into the Olympic final

:22:02.:22:06.

and they're taking on the Dutch, double defending champions from the

:22:07.:22:10.

Netherlands, 9pm this evening. Meanwhile, there is a play-off for

:22:11.:22:13.

the bronze. This was the match in which the British women won bronze

:22:14.:22:17.

four years ago against New Zealand, the black sticks. They're there

:22:18.:22:20.

again. The black sticks do not want to go home with a fourth place

:22:21.:22:25.

finish fosh the second Olympics in -- for the second Olympics in the

:22:26.:22:29.

row. We're just into the first period of this match. It's described

:22:30.:22:32.

by Seth Bennett and Lesley Murdoch. The right is the favourite side from

:22:33.:22:49.

the goalkeeper's perspective. They have the stick in their hand. We've

:22:50.:22:54.

seen a fair few goals go in that side, especially in the men's

:22:55.:22:58.

campaign. That was blocked by Reynolds. Perfect positioning. New

:22:59.:23:02.

Zealand starting to move with a bit of purpose here.

:23:03.:23:32.

Just rolled away from Pierce. Special skill from Smith. Just

:23:33.:23:59.

grabbed the ball and the defender wrong footed. Pearce could not keep

:24:00.:24:11.

it in. The youngsters in the defence is very sound. Where they position

:24:12.:24:21.

themselves. The New Zealand women are wearing white today.

:24:22.:24:36.

Really strong from Brook-Neil. Good play to make sure she was the one

:24:37.:25:09.

that made the interception. Germany back in possession again.

:25:10.:25:13.

New Zealand get a chance to take it quickly.

:25:14.:25:23.

Critical touch there. Because it was going straight towards Flynn.

:25:24.:25:40.

Harrison thumped it towards the goal. Reynolds again slamming down

:25:41.:25:44.

that left boot. The ball rolls out of play. Good

:25:45.:26:04.

invention in this German side. Very good. Very, very strong with the

:26:05.:26:10.

ball down at their feet. Play a lot of indoor hockey.

:26:11.:26:16.

Is that just down to the tight confines of playing indoor hockey

:26:17.:26:24.

that you need better stick skills? It's really quick. You're pinging

:26:25.:26:28.

balls off walls. It comes back at you with speed. It really improves

:26:29.:26:30.

your skill level. New Zealand not clearing their lines

:26:31.:26:54.

cleanly right now. It's all a bit scruffy. That's going to be a

:26:55.:27:03.

corner. This time the way of Germany.

:27:04.:27:12.

Some concentrated play by Oruz. Catching the foot of Cocks. Penalty

:27:13.:27:18.

corner time for Germany. First of the game.

:27:19.:27:27.

They have a whole Bevvy of players around the top of the circle.

:27:28.:27:45.

Smashed wide by Muller. Not able to hit the target. Not going with the

:27:46.:27:57.

drag flick on that occasion. Looking to get as much power as possible.

:27:58.:28:11.

You might not agree with my decision, but you play on, all

:28:12.:28:49.

right. That was a ticking off. Please don't shout at me because

:28:50.:28:53.

you'll get in trouble. That was the message there.

:28:54.:29:00.

New Zealand with a chance to have a bit of the ball here.

:29:01.:29:08.

Lorenz gets in again. She will surge forward. Such a heart beat of this

:29:09.:29:10.

team. Defended relatively well by

:29:11.:29:29.

Charlton. From the penalty corner Germany catching a stick, long

:29:30.:29:31.

corner on that occasion. They have it right now.

:29:32.:30:04.

They can't get to the 50/50 ball. There's been a bit of that in this

:30:05.:30:08.

performance from New Zealand. Oldenburg protects the ball well --

:30:09.:30:20.

Altenburg. Charlton covering the line. Under two minutes remaining in

:30:21.:30:40.

this first quarter. Lorenz. Got that just as it was entering to the

:30:41.:30:45.

German player, Charlton. It is a great stick forward. We have seen

:30:46.:30:50.

the Germans do it a lot. Merry switches it across but can't quite

:30:51.:30:54.

pick out her team-mate, who had made a great run, Webster. It was a real

:30:55.:31:05.

opportunity. A real opportunity for New Zealand to get a counterattack

:31:06.:31:09.

going before the end of this first quarter. Pressure coming from New

:31:10.:31:14.

Zealand right now. Good turn away from trouble. Then nicely read by

:31:15.:31:19.

Whitelock. Forward it goes to Cocks. Cocks short pass, not finding its

:31:20.:31:35.

intended destination, Webster. Lorenz looks like she has got a

:31:36.:31:41.

really good hockey brain. And fiercely competitive with it. Oh,

:31:42.:31:47.

yeah. Happy to play as part of the defensive structure. Had to scramble

:31:48.:31:53.

to get there then. Now Germany again, maybe one last opportunity.

:31:54.:32:00.

Time trickling down on this first quarter. New Zealand just doing

:32:01.:32:14.

enough to keep them away here. As the hooter sounds, it is 0-0, a

:32:15.:32:18.

goalless first 15 minutes in this first one.

:32:19.:32:25.

Yes, and plenty of happenings either end of the turf as well. That is the

:32:26.:32:35.

score after the first spell of the ballot, Germany come into the

:32:36.:32:37.

Olympics much lower ranked by New Zealand, New Zealand ranked four and

:32:38.:32:44.

Germany nine. Look at the match starts. As in the semifinal, Germany

:32:45.:32:54.

not finishing at this stage. Zero from three and a penalty corner each

:32:55.:33:02.

and no conversion rate at all. HAZEL IRVINE: Back there in a moment

:33:03.:33:07.

for the second quarter, but let me just say once again, Great Britain

:33:08.:33:11.

are in that final 9pm tonight on BBC One after the magnificent seven wins

:33:12.:33:13.

sofa are. -- seven wins so far. It is a goal

:33:14.:33:31.

for Alex dancer. It is pushed home, Great Britain at the moment are the

:33:32.:33:35.

top team in the Olympic tournament. Richardson Walshe. It is a goal for

:33:36.:33:37.

Great Britain. Bright flick. Scores. Great Britain

:33:38.:33:52.

will go to the Olympic semifinal. They will face New Zealand. It is

:33:53.:34:00.

pushed home, it is scored. Alex Danson gets the first goal of the

:34:01.:34:07.

match. Great Britain 3-0 in front. She has got it, Great Britain are in

:34:08.:34:15.

the Olympic final. HAZEL IRVINE: And they are going for

:34:16.:34:20.

gold this evening against the Dutch, meanwhile back to the bronze medal

:34:21.:34:25.

play-off and it is 0-0, New Zealand against the Germans. Back to Steph

:34:26.:34:32.

Bennett and alongside him, Leslie, a former Kiwi International, played in

:34:33.:34:34.

the Games of 1984. And it has shown great progression,

:34:35.:34:50.

in 2008 it was 12th place, four years ago it was fourth place, and

:34:51.:34:55.

the natural progression is to end up on the podium Allsopp Merry wins the

:34:56.:35:00.

ball. What has been the big difference over the last eight

:35:01.:35:07.

years? Definitely the coaching style of Mark. Not only this group that he

:35:08.:35:13.

works with, it is the finish in the circle. We see a lot of creations

:35:14.:35:20.

for New Zealand, people might get frustrated that nothing happens as a

:35:21.:35:24.

result of those creations, but that is what he has done, he has been

:35:25.:35:27.

able to get lots of opportunities in the scoring circle and starting to

:35:28.:35:34.

get a better ratio. You have to be fit, also, I think the fitness of

:35:35.:35:39.

all of the teams here is phenomenal. Particularly playing in the midday

:35:40.:35:44.

sun in Rio de Janeiro. It may be winter but these days can be pretty

:35:45.:35:50.

sapling. Muller, that was a hard bounce. All the pressure was on the

:35:51.:35:56.

ball carrier. Whitelock loses out. Now the chance

:35:57.:36:15.

for Lisa Schulze. Not able to win it back. That was really good from

:36:16.:36:20.

Thomson. Smith spinning around gets herself a free hit. Two minutes into

:36:21.:36:26.

this second quarter and still waiting for somebody to score the

:36:27.:36:27.

first goal. The whistle-blowers. Advantage maybe could have been

:36:28.:36:42.

played there. It was played off the German foot and was going to elude

:36:43.:36:46.

Harrison, maybe that is why the advantage wasn't played but from the

:36:47.:36:51.

bigger angle, you can see why it wasn't.

:36:52.:37:00.

Everyone in the circle, it is a good old battle in there, and it goes the

:37:01.:37:09.

way of Germany. Yes, Harrison came from behind, nothing wrong with that

:37:10.:37:13.

as long as you don't make contact stick on stick. Lawrence,. So much

:37:14.:37:28.

confidence. She was in such a bind their -- Lorenz. Now the break can

:37:29.:37:48.

come. Taken off the stick of Teschke. The ball bobbling off the

:37:49.:37:53.

surface, we have seen that a bit more in these last two days,

:37:54.:37:56.

particularly in these really hot conditions.

:37:57.:38:00.

Now, a chance to run, bit of praise. It could break towards Schutze. Now

:38:01.:38:22.

they can break. Michelsen looks the Smith. Good running off the ball to

:38:23.:38:28.

rain that one in from Harrison. Lorenz not only wins the ball but

:38:29.:38:32.

then has the poise to walk it out of trouble. She is a very impressive

:38:33.:38:40.

player. She certainly is. And already for someone so young, just

:38:41.:38:43.

19 years of age, she has that presence on the pitch. It's not just

:38:44.:38:49.

the hockey work she does, she is a dominating player and owns the

:38:50.:38:54.

territory. She wins her one on ones, which is critical. As she gets a

:38:55.:38:58.

little older and a little stronger, you suspect that she will become an

:38:59.:39:01.

increasing attacking presence as well.

:39:02.:39:06.

At this point in her into national career, she has already scored six

:39:07.:39:16.

goals. She has played in 44 international matches, so she is

:39:17.:39:20.

moving along quite nicely. Germany put this one in. It is high and over

:39:21.:39:29.

the top. Muller with the attempt. It is the first really big blow we have

:39:30.:39:32.

seen from Germany in this quarter, up and over the top from Muller.

:39:33.:39:41.

Smith battles. New Zealand get the free hit. Put it back and they are

:39:42.:39:57.

going to try and build. Look at the structure of Germany, forcing New

:39:58.:40:05.

Zealand to go worldwide. A bit of space opening up for Sophie Cocks.

:40:06.:40:11.

But who is there? It is Lorenz. She has had a wonderful first 20 minutes

:40:12.:40:16.

of this game. Now the opportunity to break again. Altenburg. Tries to put

:40:17.:40:23.

it through a gap that wasn't really there. Whitelock will come away with

:40:24.:40:29.

it for the Black sticks. Needed to be stronger in possession. Altenburg

:40:30.:40:36.

will keep it moving. Poked away from her at the last second but the

:40:37.:40:41.

attack continues. Whitelock gets there and now the break can go the

:40:42.:40:48.

other way. Flin. Flin will go. What an opportunity this. One-on-one.

:40:49.:41:02.

Flin can't get it passed. And there was a player at the back post. Flin

:41:03.:41:15.

steaming to her left. Two on one, it was almost. It put flin in two

:41:16.:41:22.

minds, the Shuo Cao individual orders she passed and in the end,

:41:23.:41:34.

Lawrence Tomlinson in the circle. -- Rothlin. She got caught betwixt and

:41:35.:41:39.

between, never getting in a proper shot and it gave Reynolds the

:41:40.:41:45.

chance. Speaker you can see Webster steaming back and with the

:41:46.:41:50.

backpedalling of the Wrens. Webster's family in the stands.

:41:51.:41:59.

Flynn was spinning and almost shooting before the ball got to

:42:00.:42:02.

have. There have been two opportunities on the far side where

:42:03.:42:06.

the players should have taken a shot and they have passed off. It

:42:07.:42:11.

happened in the first quarter as well. They are so intent on playing

:42:12.:42:15.

the team passing game that the direct shot is not happening. Maybe

:42:16.:42:23.

they need to be more selfish. It is a team game but unique moments of

:42:24.:42:25.

individual brilliance. Keddell for New Zealand. New Zealand

:42:26.:42:42.

have only ever won a couple of matches against Germany. This is the

:42:43.:42:50.

17th meeting. Germany have won ten times. It is a dominant record. Is

:42:51.:42:58.

it Olympics and World Cups you are talking? If you do look at the

:42:59.:43:01.

Olympics, they have played three times prior to today at the Olympic

:43:02.:43:08.

Games. 2012, and in the year 2000. Two of those three Games have ended

:43:09.:43:14.

in draws and just one goal separating the sides and one goal

:43:15.:43:18.

when Germany won in 2008. So there isn't a great deal between them.

:43:19.:43:28.

Whitelock. It goes all the way through, doesn't take a touch.

:43:29.:43:34.

Webster threw herself at that one. Has to make sure the script of this

:43:35.:43:46.

game is as he drew up beforehand. Cash cow. -- cash macro. Germany

:43:47.:44:08.

coming forward. That was nice. That was an opportunity for Germany.

:44:09.:44:18.

Using reverse stick to get the ball into the circle, Schutze, but

:44:19.:44:21.

couldn't quite directed where she wanted. -- direct it. New Zealand

:44:22.:44:31.

back in possession again, then. What do you think of the structure of the

:44:32.:44:36.

New Zealand play? They are alternating using the midfield, who

:44:37.:44:40.

the screen players are and we have seen Whitelock and Michelsen, we

:44:41.:44:43.

haven't seen a lot of Michelsen, here she is with the ball though,

:44:44.:44:48.

and she has played two different roles all murder. Chance for

:44:49.:44:53.

McLaren. This is a real opportunity. Merry fluffs it. May well have been

:44:54.:44:57.

a challenge on her that caused the problem.

:44:58.:45:21.

Merry, at times, is a bit a battering ram. She can't make that

:45:22.:45:29.

one stick on her, where she wanted it to be.

:45:30.:45:43.

This is better from New Zealand. It's a more sustained period of

:45:44.:45:48.

pressure. Coming from Schroder, that defensive

:45:49.:46:08.

dribble out of the circle was amazing. Michelsen goes stumbling.

:46:09.:46:15.

An apology there. Who'll be the happier right now of

:46:16.:46:30.

the two coaching staff? I think that Jamilon Mulders definitely because

:46:31.:46:33.

his side has coped with what New Zealand has thrown at them. There

:46:34.:46:36.

will be frustration that New Zealand haven't converted the opportunities

:46:37.:46:39.

they've had in the circle. They haven't found the connections. It's

:46:40.:46:45.

a much better game from them, having said that, that the semifinal.

:46:46.:46:55.

Whitelock will come on and immediately take this free hit. It's

:46:56.:46:59.

moved down the field of play, telegraphed rather, though.

:47:00.:47:09.

She had a chance, but just miss today really. Can't put it simpler

:47:10.:47:35.

than that. She was doing her darnedest to get it. It was not

:47:36.:47:39.

quite falling for the team wearing white, that is New Zealand. Defence

:47:40.:47:45.

that is coming from Germany is stoic and strong and very competitive.

:47:46.:47:51.

Hacked high and over the top. A good bit of work to get forward. Anita

:47:52.:48:04.

McClaren just bag and getting the ball over the top and being called

:48:05.:48:12.

dangerous in the end. Flynn not as influential in this

:48:13.:48:16.

game as yet, as maybe New Zealand would hope.

:48:17.:48:38.

Really good from Michelsen. Nearly a super individual goal. It will be a

:48:39.:48:48.

long corner. Stacey Michelsen with the ball, goes through one, two,

:48:49.:48:53.

three tackles, has the shot, but Reynolds' left boot is sure.

:48:54.:48:55.

Tiptoes. Again they put this one in very,

:48:56.:49:18.

very high. After a really good, strong spell of pressure, the half

:49:19.:49:26.

ends and all in all, that was pretty good through the first 30 minutes of

:49:27.:49:31.

this one. Not much between them. Germany defending well when New

:49:32.:49:34.

Zealand have pushed forward. But they have had their own chances at

:49:35.:49:39.

the other end of the field. It's Germany 0, New Zealand 0.

:49:40.:49:49.

STUDIO: We'll be back there when they get into the third quarter

:49:50.:49:54.

there. The black sticks of New Zealand are in this bronze medal

:49:55.:49:58.

play-off after losing the semifinal to Great Britain, in what was a

:49:59.:50:03.

dramatic match the other night. It was watched by Kat, who watched the

:50:04.:50:07.

match in person. COMMENTATOR: It's a goal for Great

:50:08.:50:27.

Britain. Great Britain have won it. They've defeated Argentina! Scored.

:50:28.:50:31.

Great Britain at the moment the top team in the Olympic tournament. Next

:50:32.:50:36.

stop semifinal against the black sticks, New Zealand.

:50:37.:50:42.

This is it, the Olympic semifinal. Great Britain beat New Zealand four

:50:43.:50:45.

years ago in London to win bronze. Can they beat them again in Rio and

:50:46.:50:48.

give themselves a chance to go for gold?

:50:49.:50:54.

COMMENTATOR: Terrific atmosphere here tonight at the Diadora hockey

:50:55.:50:59.

stadium. It's come to Thompson, wide. New Zealand coming forward at

:51:00.:51:03.

pace. Smith to the edge, they'll get a shot on goal. No. It's wide again.

:51:04.:51:15.

Cullen, saved. Drag flick. It's pushed home. It's scored! Alex

:51:16.:51:20.

Danson gets the first goal of the match for Great Britain.

:51:21.:51:24.

Really good first half of hockey. They've got everything there.

:51:25.:51:26.

They've been training so hard for this. They're not likely to let it

:51:27.:51:31.

go at this point. It's there to take. Fingers crossed, everything

:51:32.:51:35.

crossed. You have come dressed for the occasion. And we're loving it.

:51:36.:51:40.

The crowd here is unreal. Every single person in here is screaming

:51:41.:51:45.

on Team GB. We are nailing it so far. You've worked up ape sweat

:51:46.:51:48.

banging that drum. We have, but it's worth it. Apparently they're

:51:49.:51:52.

complaining about it the New Zealanders, they'll have to pry it

:51:53.:51:55.

from our dead hands before we give it up. We're going on.

:51:56.:52:01.

COMMENTATOR: New Zealand in possession one more time. Can they

:52:02.:52:12.

clear it? Really brave. Oh, she's found her. Can she score? Penalty

:52:13.:52:22.

stroke. Scores! This is promising for Great Britain. Penalty stroke

:52:23.:52:28.

again. To put Great Britain 3-0 in front, she's got it! Danson scores

:52:29.:52:33.

her second. Great Britain are in the Olympic final.

:52:34.:52:39.

CHEERING That's it, they've done it. They are through to their first

:52:40.:52:44.

Olympic final with seven wins out of seven. Can they now make it eight?

:52:45.:52:52.

Mrs White your daughter is an Olympic finalist. I know, how

:52:53.:52:55.

amazing. They worked so hard for it. They weren't going to lose that now.

:52:56.:52:58.

A Gold Medal chance now. We've been talking to your mum and dad in the

:52:59.:53:02.

stands. They are so proud. Yeah, I'm so happy. The girls are ecstatic.

:53:03.:53:07.

I'm sure their parents are as well. They're a part of the journey as

:53:08.:53:10.

much as we are. So proud. The whole team were brilliant in that game.

:53:11.:53:15.

What you saw today was the ultimate squad performance. People putting

:53:16.:53:18.

their bodies on the line. People thinking clearly under pressure and

:53:19.:53:21.

doing the right thing at the right moment. Everybody, to a woman, stood

:53:22.:53:28.

up and did their job today. They've looked so composed and so together.

:53:29.:53:32.

It's 9pm, the moment for the Great Britain women's hockey team in that

:53:33.:53:35.

final against the Dutch. More hockey shortly. But just whilst they're

:53:36.:53:39.

enjoying their halftime break, it's the start of the modern pentathlon.

:53:40.:53:43.

There was a fencing ranking round yesterday. But it's the women's

:53:44.:53:46.

event. Now this is the event in which Great Britain's women have

:53:47.:53:52.

fared extremely well since 2000, Stef Cook took the gold there.

:53:53.:53:57.

Medals for Kate Allenby and Samantha Murray took the silver on the last

:53:58.:54:02.

day in London. It was the very last medal won by Great Britain the 65th

:54:03.:54:08.

at our home Olympics. They're in it today. Samantha's back alongside

:54:09.:54:12.

Kate French and the way it works, it's five completely separate events

:54:13.:54:16.

all on one day. They start with the swimming. Then there's a fencing

:54:17.:54:21.

bonus round today. There's showjumping. This is intriguing

:54:22.:54:25.

because the top athletes in the fence and the fencing gets to choose

:54:26.:54:29.

-- in the swim and the fencing gets to choose the horse. The others have

:54:30.:54:32.

to draw lots to see which horse they get. That causes all kinds of

:54:33.:54:36.

confusion. You get 20 minutes to warm up on the animal, then they've

:54:37.:54:41.

got five jumps before they have to complete a showjumping round. Then

:54:42.:54:45.

they finish off with a run and shooting in the same I vent. It's

:54:46.:54:51.

like a biathlon in the Winter Olympics, but without skis. Let's

:54:52.:54:56.

see how the British athletes add everyone else got on in the swim

:54:57.:54:57.

this morning. Kate French is in the middle. She's

:54:58.:55:08.

got the second fastest personal best time in the last year.

:55:09.:55:30.

Kate French in lane five. She lives in Bath where the British modern

:55:31.:55:40.

pentathlon team are based at the University of Bath. From Gravesend

:55:41.:55:41.

in Kent originally. This is probably quite a fast swim

:55:42.:56:12.

heat for Kate. I'm not surprised to see her drop back a bit. She will

:56:13.:56:17.

put everything into this. Some of the times this year have

:56:18.:56:23.

been more like 2. 16, rather than 2-11 that she's been ranked at. What

:56:24.:56:27.

will be her strong points as we go through the day? One of the great

:56:28.:56:33.

things about Kate is that she's actually just a good, all round

:56:34.:56:38.

modern pentathlete. She doesn't have any particularly weak events. She

:56:39.:56:46.

has a strong ride coming from her penta background. Her swim is good,

:56:47.:56:51.

in the second fastest heat here. Her combined event has improved

:56:52.:57:03.

enormously. We might have hoped for more in the fencing yesterday, she's

:57:04.:57:11.

keeping herself in the mix. Great action from the crowd to

:57:12.:57:25.

Marquez. Kate French in fifth. The reaction of the Brazilian crowd

:57:26.:57:29.

whenever a Brazilian athlete has been competing has been amazing out

:57:30.:57:32.

here at the Gamesment -- Games. Potapenko there.

:57:33.:57:50.

Sotero of Italy in second. Marques in third place.

:57:51.:58:02.

Khokhlova of Argentina six out of the six. The position in the swim

:58:03.:58:07.

heat is not crucial in this. It's really just about the time. That's

:58:08.:58:11.

the sort of time I would have been expecting Kate to swim more of a 2.

:58:12.:58:18.

6. -- 2. 16. This is the final heat in the women's modern pentathlon.

:58:19.:58:26.

These women will be looking to swim Sub 2. 10.

:58:27.:58:42.

Sam with a good, long glide under the water. She and Clouvel used to

:58:43.:58:49.

train together in France. Sam is a modern linguist. She studied French

:58:50.:58:54.

and politics at Bath. She spent time out in France and during that time

:58:55.:59:02.

was training with Clouvel. They're well matched on the swim. There'll

:59:03.:59:06.

be fierce rivalry in the pool today. She won the Silver Medal in London,

:59:07.:59:11.

maybe surprised a lot of people when she did, although I don't think she

:59:12.:59:14.

surprised herself coming in and winning the final medal for Team GB,

:59:15.:59:18.

in the final event of the Games in 2012. It's fair to say, she's had a

:59:19.:59:21.

tough time since then. She said she found it difficult to cope with the

:59:22.:59:26.

expectations placed on her by being the Silver Medallist. Though she

:59:27.:59:30.

went on to become the world champion in 2014. It's been a tough year in

:59:31.:59:35.

2016. Yes, unfortunately this year she has struggled with injury. She's

:59:36.:59:40.

had an Achilles injury, illness, various technical difficulties. I

:59:41.:59:43.

know she changed her gun earlier in the year as well. So, she wants to

:59:44.:59:50.

make amends for all of that. This year, she hasn't really shown her

:59:51.:59:55.

form. The fencing maybe was a reflection of all of those

:59:56.:59:58.

difficulties that she's been encompassing this year.

:59:59.:00:02.

She'll be out there fighting today. She will have a point to prove.

:00:03.:00:11.

a and she feels very comfortable in the water as we can see. Going into

:00:12.:00:18.

the final length. She was second at the town. She was first at the

:00:19.:00:22.

halfway point so she has dropped back slightly.

:00:23.:00:28.

Elodie Clouvel will not want to be beaten, she is a tough competitor.

:00:29.:00:42.

It is the Russian Gulnaz Gubaydullina that will get the touch

:00:43.:00:46.

first of all. She says the new Olympic record in the swim, Gulnaz

:00:47.:00:51.

Gubaydullina. Two minutes and seven seconds. Elodie Clouvel is second

:00:52.:00:58.

and Samantha Murray is in fourth place with a time of 2.10.81 minutes

:00:59.:01:08.

this is the result of the swim, the overall results. Gulnaz

:01:09.:01:17.

Gubaydullina, that Olympic record time, 317 points. It was a strong

:01:18.:01:21.

swim for Elodie Clouvel. Fourth place in the swim for Samantha

:01:22.:01:25.

Murray. Kate French town in 15th position. Natalya Coyle of Northern

:01:26.:01:37.

Ireland in 18th. You can see marble Lee Dickson and Isabella Isaksen are

:01:38.:01:48.

24th -- 24 and 24th fastest. The Beijing Champion Lena Schoeneborn in

:01:49.:01:52.

20 Ninth Place. The champion from London Laura acid escaped just

:01:53.:02:02.

both were needing a good performance in the fencing around. We are

:02:03.:02:09.

straight back to the hockey. It is still 0-0 for the start of the third

:02:10.:02:11.

quarter. COMMENTATOR: That is one of the area

:02:12.:02:20.

is where you could see that merely as strong. It is very well picked

:02:21.:02:25.

up. I totally agree with you. The ball is still with New Zealand.

:02:26.:02:47.

The high shot is going to be called dangerous.

:02:48.:03:02.

There is a lot more pressure coming on the deliverer. It is more white

:03:03.:03:08.

uniforms around the German defenders when they are run the ball. Now it

:03:09.:03:26.

has taken away. Pushed on again and that is an opportunity to break with

:03:27.:03:34.

pace. The shot was deflected and generally score. They have got the

:03:35.:03:38.

opening goal. Really good at running again. Charlotte Stapenhorst on the

:03:39.:03:45.

break, against the run of play, gives Germany a one goal lead. It

:03:46.:03:50.

was the pressure that New Zealand presented. Look at Marine waivers at

:03:51.:03:58.

the top. She gets hard pass across to Charlotte Stapenhorst to open

:03:59.:04:02.

this scoring in this bronze medal match. -- Marine waivers.

:04:03.:04:12.

It is clinical from Germany. Essentially, they had three attempts

:04:13.:04:21.

on goal in this match and they have now scored from one of them. For New

:04:22.:04:27.

Zealand, it is a different story. They have had ten attempts are not

:04:28.:04:31.

scored any. It is that the nickel plate that is the difference between

:04:32.:04:38.

these two Mac. -- clinical play. It will give Germany confidence they

:04:39.:04:39.

can build again from the back. It goes out of play and that will be

:04:40.:04:53.

New Zealand ball. Lots of time left in the game for New Zealand to come

:04:54.:04:57.

back but it is a kick in the guts. It takes the wind right out of them

:04:58.:05:01.

to have had your best passage of play of the game.

:05:02.:05:41.

You could see what Gemma Flynn was trying to do, getting the ball to

:05:42.:05:46.

her skipper but it needed to be a softer pass. What a change in the

:05:47.:05:57.

speed of the game. The increased energy that Germany have got. That

:05:58.:06:01.

will create opportunities for New Zealand as well. It will stretch out

:06:02.:06:05.

the layers and give room to the midfield where New Zealand are very

:06:06.:06:07.

strong, very fast do that midfield. What a pass that was. It was

:06:08.:06:25.

deflected. It was so close but Sally Rutherford did just enough. Germany

:06:26.:06:32.

are pouring on the pressure. Sally Rutherford gets a very important

:06:33.:06:35.

stick and a good save. The ball are still with Germany.

:06:36.:06:42.

Germany are trying to elevate, they have got the momentum after the

:06:43.:06:48.

goal. They know that a second goal might be enough, particularly with

:06:49.:06:51.

the way that they have defended in this tournament. You are most

:06:52.:06:57.

vulnerable when you have had one scored against you. To get another

:06:58.:07:02.

one straight away, in terms of possession and territory, against

:07:03.:07:06.

the run of play. It is about taking the opportunities and finishing in

:07:07.:07:07.

that circle. Good control again. That quick

:07:08.:07:26.

release was intercepted and midfield again. When you are under pressure,

:07:27.:07:30.

you try to react quickly. The ball comes back and you just as quickly.

:07:31.:07:43.

That was given away. It is a second. Lisa Marie Schutze. Just like that,

:07:44.:08:08.

Germany lead 2-0. Mean New Zealand players are flat out on the pitch

:08:09.:08:13.

and it is a real kicker for them. What a great goal from Germany. They

:08:14.:08:20.

have put on the pressure. Number 11, Lisa Marie Schutze. She sensed there

:08:21.:08:27.

was a lot of New Zealand players around the ball but still have the

:08:28.:08:31.

composure and poised to put the ball over the top of the goalkeeper and

:08:32.:08:37.

it is Germany- and -- Germany 2-0 New Zealand. It was coming and you

:08:38.:08:43.

felt it. Germany couldn't see that there was an opportunity and it all

:08:44.:08:49.

came because of a mistake by Kayla Whitelock. She had possession and

:08:50.:08:53.

gave the ball away and midfield. That is why Germany were able to hit

:08:54.:08:57.

so quickly. New Zealand have to gamble now. They have to try to find

:08:58.:09:03.

a way back into the scheme. Any kind of ball possession over the next

:09:04.:09:07.

five minutes will be a big help to them, just to try to get a foothold

:09:08.:09:16.

back. 2-0 down. Germany have been so clinical. So deficient in what they

:09:17.:09:28.

have done. And efficient. Getting those to my chances and making it

:09:29.:09:33.

hurt with accounts for the defence. We all want the ball, you can hear

:09:34.:09:36.

them shouting. The ball was hit to high as it was

:09:37.:10:10.

brought back in. And it was clear the way. Really interesting

:10:11.:10:11.

decision. The shot on goal, a shot across,

:10:12.:10:30.

Gemma Flynn was under pressure and did not have the poise.

:10:31.:10:46.

It was an interesting decision by the umpire not to give the ball

:10:47.:10:54.

being too high coming in. And now the ball goes the way of Germany.

:10:55.:11:20.

That was nearly taken down beautifully but she runs out of

:11:21.:11:30.

play. Again, putting pressure on the outlet from defence. New Zealand are

:11:31.:11:35.

not coping with it all that well and the option is not there either. It

:11:36.:11:36.

has been cut off by Germany. Right now in this bronze medal

:11:37.:11:50.

match, New Zealand are finding themselves struggling to get back

:11:51.:11:55.

into the scheme. They have got the opportunity with this long corner

:11:56.:11:58.

with under five minutes to go in the third quarter.

:11:59.:12:08.

Lisa Marie Schutze and Charlotte Stapenhorst are the two

:12:09.:12:10.

goal-scorers. New Zealand are going to have to

:12:11.:12:20.

work all the way back to collect this.

:12:21.:12:28.

New Zealand are still waiting quite. 'S -- still wearing white.

:12:29.:12:38.

You could easily get these two mix-up otherwise, Germany are in

:12:39.:12:42.

black. What a tackle by Brooke Neal. She

:12:43.:12:49.

did everything she needed to do. In the end it was just behind the

:12:50.:13:13.

onrushing Pia-Sophie Oldhafer. She will pop up in the most amazing

:13:14.:13:17.

places and get yourself an opportunity to get a shot away at

:13:18.:13:23.

goal. She was one of the goal-scorers when Germany beat New

:13:24.:13:24.

Zealand in the group game. Anne Schroder and pierce of fear or

:13:25.:13:40.

favour where the two goal-scorers and that match. -- Pia-Sophie

:13:41.:13:49.

Oldhafer. They want to go upstairs. REFEREE: We are looking for a German

:13:50.:13:54.

foot. I will take a look. The referral comes. They are looking for

:13:55.:14:04.

a German foot. There it is. It is Lisa Altenburg. Having another look

:14:05.:14:19.

at the angle. REFEREE: There is a food, penalty corner. -- foot.

:14:20.:14:27.

Germany put all their gear on. New Zealand are referred correctly. They

:14:28.:14:35.

need to get a goal now and this penalty corner is the opportunity. I

:14:36.:14:37.

was thinking the same thing. Just over three minutes remaining in

:14:38.:14:43.

the third quarter. Germany will get a chance to clear

:14:44.:15:03.

it away and did not go to plan. McLaren just got it on the defender.

:15:04.:15:05.

Onto her own player. All you first break. -- already a

:15:06.:15:25.

fast rate. It just flicked through onto the fourth quarter, and it

:15:26.:15:32.

still says that on your screens and in the main stadium, it is a slight

:15:33.:15:35.

technical fault, we are still in the third. There are under three minutes

:15:36.:15:45.

remaining. Look at that terrific pass from Oruz. New Zealand, not

:15:46.:15:58.

able to find the team-mates as they want at this point. And they have

:15:59.:16:06.

not been able to play down the right much either, which is where a lot of

:16:07.:16:10.

the goals have been elicited from in this Olympic campaign. I thought she

:16:11.:16:21.

was going to take a break but instead she is poised, as this is

:16:22.:16:29.

sent airily forward. Germany seem to be playing for time right now. Maybe

:16:30.:16:34.

that is when New Zealand can get them. It deflects out of play and

:16:35.:16:41.

now the chance to run on, Smith, twists, turns... The challenge on

:16:42.:16:52.

the stick. Free hit will come and it is just starting to get a bit

:16:53.:16:58.

fractious. Captain Whitelock got a green card for that the other day.

:16:59.:17:05.

Blocked at the top. Germany do not clear their lines though. Not

:17:06.:17:10.

clinical, and now New Zealand can build again with Charlton. It goes

:17:11.:17:16.

up in the air. This would be cleared. Out of play.

:17:17.:17:25.

The last 30 seconds of the third quarter. Teschke, sending it down

:17:26.:17:39.

the field. Smith is blocked off out there. And Germany doing just enough

:17:40.:17:48.

to make this very, very for New Zealand. It is good player, what you

:17:49.:17:54.

have to do in this position. Oh, penalty corner. Outside the circle,

:17:55.:18:01.

it is deemed deliberate infringement to stop the progress of the New

:18:02.:18:06.

Zealand player. A tough call but it has happened to New Zealand in other

:18:07.:18:11.

games, critical games. There it is. This is their fifth penalty corner.

:18:12.:18:21.

And it looks like they are going to go the other way now and try

:18:22.:18:26.

something a little bit different. They will bring everybody up,

:18:27.:18:29.

because the hooter, I have not actually heard it, but it has got

:18:30.:18:36.

zero on the scoreboard, although it has not been that accurate today.

:18:37.:18:42.

All the defences to do is get it out from the baseline, all New Zealand

:18:43.:18:45.

have to do is score, or lose possession. A full false start...

:18:46.:18:54.

Tipped into the air, second chance... Oh, yes! Mary scores. --

:18:55.:19:08.

Merry. It has handed New Zealand a huge chance. It is not yet set in

:19:09.:19:14.

gold. They are going to have a look at it. I think they have got a

:19:15.:19:26.

point. I think Merry comes in to early. I cannot see anything wrong

:19:27.:19:39.

with that. Your interpretation? In real time I felt like she broke the

:19:40.:19:45.

line before the ball was played. But you cannot tell from that angle. You

:19:46.:19:56.

need the big wide shot to be able to tell. There was a break, but now it

:19:57.:20:05.

in failed attempt at goal, so the goal stands. There you go. Germany

:20:06.:20:15.

lose their referral. The goal counts. Late drama. So there was an

:20:16.:20:22.

early break, but it was deemed not to influence the goal. Here it is

:20:23.:20:32.

again, watch Merry, the shot, deflection, the saver made by

:20:33.:20:39.

Reynolds, and then went back in, after a slight deflection, and the

:20:40.:20:44.

coach raises his arms above his head, at last his team gets one in

:20:45.:20:47.

after all the opportunities they have created.

:20:48.:21:10.

HAZEL: the end of the third quarter, one more to come. But we are

:21:11.:21:16.

squeezing in as much news from day 14 as we can. It is moving day in

:21:17.:21:24.

the women's golf. We saw Justin Rose on his way to gold last week. He

:21:25.:21:27.

managed to score the first ever hole in one in Olympic golf, but not to

:21:28.:21:33.

be out beaten, the women have managed it twice today.

:21:34.:21:40.

They have, the wind has whipped up from the Atlantic and added a whole

:21:41.:21:45.

new dimension to the women's golf. It has not just created problems out

:21:46.:21:49.

on the course where some people are really struggling, but moments of

:21:50.:21:54.

absolute billions and drama. Take a look at this, the world number one

:21:55.:21:59.

from New Zealand, 19-year-old Lydia Ko, on the par three eighths, after

:22:00.:22:08.

four birdies on the front nine, and then this. That has propelled her

:22:09.:22:17.

up. She is four shots from the lead, were in contention after a fairly

:22:18.:22:21.

average opening couple of rounds. And good news for Britain, Charlie

:22:22.:22:30.

is one shot ahead on ten under par. -- Charley Hull. She has had such a

:22:31.:22:39.

dramatic round. The wind has really affected her. Sometimes harnessed to

:22:40.:22:44.

the good, other times to the bad. She was in water in the third, but

:22:45.:22:49.

luckily the ball skipped out and landed in a mound of sand. But

:22:50.:22:54.

Charley Hull is going great guns, just three shots from the lead. Tied

:22:55.:23:00.

for second. No problems for the leader, seven time major champion

:23:01.:23:10.

from Korea, regular as a metronome, this was to give Inbee Park a four

:23:11.:23:19.

shot lead, she did miss, but has extended her lead, and is three

:23:20.:23:24.

shots clear of the rest of the field. Catriona Matthew so, I am

:23:25.:23:29.

afraid, gradually drifting backwards in the wind. Ten shots adrift of the

:23:30.:23:39.

leader, Inbee Park, but Charley Hull, still right in it.

:23:40.:23:44.

Thank you very much for that Hull, still right in it.

:23:45.:23:45.

Thank you very much for that update. And just to reaffirm that Inbee

:23:46.:23:53.

Park, she missed the British woman's Open Championship with a thumb

:23:54.:23:57.

injury and was saving herself for this gold-medal assault. And we are

:23:58.:24:01.

now watching a bronze medal assault in the bronze medal match, so that

:24:02.:24:05.

is the situation in the Gulf, back we go to the fourth quarter of this

:24:06.:24:10.

bronze medal play-off, Germany 2-1 New Zealand.

:24:11.:24:19.

COMMENTATOR: COMMENTATOR: playing her first game of the tournament,

:24:20.:24:25.

she comes out again, more good defending, and then, Thompson,

:24:26.:24:33.

winning the free hit. Look at this. Rutherford called into

:24:34.:24:38.

action by and other very good angled pass. A beautiful pass to start,

:24:39.:24:46.

which we did not quite see there. That was an incredible trap. The

:24:47.:24:51.

full wind-up and big hit. It pops out to Muller again, Germany just

:24:52.:25:09.

built it down-the-line. -- belt. Better. Mickelson. Still Mickelson.

:25:10.:25:19.

What a challenge at the very last second. Look at the high backlift.

:25:20.:25:31.

It gives Lorenz time to get her stick in and smother the chance. So

:25:32.:25:38.

committed in defence, 19 years of age. Stapenhorst, try to put

:25:39.:25:49.

pressure on, Rutherford came out a long way, and Stapenhorst has it, it

:25:50.:25:58.

hit the arm, or the hand, that is the ruling of the umpire. They

:25:59.:26:05.

continues. -- play. Good, from McLaren. Whitelock. A long way

:26:06.:26:13.

forward, puts this in. It came off a foot just outside. Being pushed

:26:14.:26:20.

right up into the front running strikers, Whitelock, the New Zealand

:26:21.:26:26.

skipper. As Germany are the equal with all their defensive strengths.

:26:27.:26:32.

Thompson, chops it across, taken beautifully out of the air. McLaren

:26:33.:26:37.

tries to sneak by and gets a free hit. This time plays it in low. That

:26:38.:26:51.

would be a long corner. Neat pass. This time it goes in, deflected...

:26:52.:26:57.

And it goes behind off a New Zealand stick. A good battle right now. The

:26:58.:27:05.

strike from Charlton, a little aerial as well. But the eyes and the

:27:06.:27:08.

feet are sure, from Germany. It is all New Zealand are right now.

:27:09.:27:25.

They are pushing for a second. Deflects in again and a good save

:27:26.:27:31.

from Reynolds. It came off a New Zealand foot last. This was a chance

:27:32.:27:36.

nobody anticipated. It was not really a shot but nearly was a goal.

:27:37.:27:43.

That was very efficient. Bending the knee and making the ball dropped

:27:44.:27:49.

down. There were two Mac New Zealanders at the top looking for

:27:50.:27:52.

the rebound, a bit of confusion, they are just lacking that extra bit

:27:53.:27:59.

of composure that they need. Almost doing the second thing before the

:28:00.:28:03.

first thing has been completed. We have seen it a few times. Is it just

:28:04.:28:09.

scrambled mind of the I think it is just the pressure and the desire to

:28:10.:28:15.

get a result. You cannot fault that but in the end it is not a helpful

:28:16.:28:23.

motion to have. -- emotion. Thomson goes high. Controlled well by Cox.

:28:24.:28:37.

Space to work. That is too high and bubbled up of Webster's stick. That

:28:38.:28:47.

is pressure because from New Zealand, a lot of them have got...

:28:48.:28:56.

Is it just a technical thing? You are rushing, not getting your

:28:57.:28:57.

balance. Good movement by Michelson. But it is Lorenz who

:28:58.:29:24.

comes away with it for Germany. And it is giving away, really sloppy.

:29:25.:29:37.

Mavers, wants it, but in the end, off a shin, and she wants to take

:29:38.:29:47.

out home of card and have quite a remonstrate. Fortunate not to get in

:29:48.:29:55.

trouble -- take out her mouth card. The game is being stretched out,

:29:56.:30:00.

both sets of players. Good turn, Thompson. New Zealand. The Black

:30:01.:30:07.

sticks are heading over the horizon right now. The cavalry is coming.

:30:08.:30:14.

Can they get that one chance that they need?

:30:15.:30:24.

To potentially send this game to a shoot out. The men's bronze medal

:30:25.:30:34.

match was decided by a shoot out. Germany's semifinal was decided by a

:30:35.:30:35.

shoot out. These last 2-3 minutes, Germany have

:30:36.:30:49.

done a make life super difficult for New Zealand.

:30:50.:31:14.

The pressure is coming the Germany are keeping their nerve.

:31:15.:31:26.

That was miscommunication with Charlotte Stapenhorst but it is a

:31:27.:31:29.

free hit for Germany. Germany put it in but it was

:31:30.:31:35.

deflected wide of the target. The German supporters are on their

:31:36.:31:54.

feet. Trying to do their bit to help.

:31:55.:32:08.

That was good defensive work from New Zealand and lots of pressure on

:32:09.:32:14.

the ball carrier. They need to get the ball up the other end.

:32:15.:32:21.

When Stacey Mickelson gets the ball, she's really good. She was crowded

:32:22.:32:34.

out by three. Lisa Altenburg tied to get around the outside. The range of

:32:35.:32:45.

passing right now... I was wondering if New Zealand are taking off the

:32:46.:32:51.

goalkeeper? Yes, they are. The red jersey is coming onto the field of

:32:52.:33:01.

play. Will step off. Brooke Neal will put on the red shirt. Hold on a

:33:02.:33:08.

second, she says. She has not got the shirt on. Brooke Neal puts on

:33:09.:33:15.

the red shirt in deep defence. She was wearing number nine. It always

:33:16.:33:20.

feels to be a funny time to do it when there is a free hit on the 23

:33:21.:33:23.

metering. It probably doesn't matter either way.

:33:24.:33:38.

New Zealand believed it was the ball.

:33:39.:33:46.

Lisa Altenburg will see off time right now. Under four minutes to go.

:33:47.:33:53.

New Zealand have got possession back and need to make it count. 2-1 down.

:33:54.:33:58.

Need to make sure they get some pressure on the circle.

:33:59.:34:18.

It deflects again and that is good defending from Germany to get a

:34:19.:34:24.

stick in the way. Terrific attack and today the defence.

:34:25.:34:33.

Both sides want this desperately right now. That was a dangerous

:34:34.:34:36.

clearance attempt. New Zealand give cheap possession

:34:37.:34:52.

back. Again that had been deemed dangerous. Is there one New Zealand

:34:53.:35:05.

player that has got the ice in their veins? That was a deflection again.

:35:06.:35:19.

That was a big say. Two people going for the shot. There was confusion.

:35:20.:35:30.

That was kicked away. Was that dangerous? No, it wasn't. It is a

:35:31.:35:45.

long corner. New Zealand are only two minute warning. That was

:35:46.:35:48.

deflected in the circle and it was too high. It hit Kayla Whitelock.

:35:49.:35:56.

New Zealand are giving it everything. Reynolds against Ops the

:35:57.:36:07.

opportunity. Lisa Altenburg will need to bring the ball up.

:36:08.:36:38.

There is just a wall of black ahead of New Zealand. Germany are

:36:39.:36:47.

collapsing. They have shut off any daylight between the ball and the

:36:48.:36:53.

goal. So far, they have been good to avoid any danger. They have conceded

:36:54.:36:58.

a penalty corner. That was a high ball and it was

:36:59.:37:10.

careless. And Germany can clearly and the time is running out for an

:37:11.:37:11.

equaliser. McLaren does not trap it cleanly and

:37:12.:37:33.

the basics are costing New Zealand. Germany enter the final ten seconds,

:37:34.:37:37.

they know, barring a miracle, they have done this. Terrific defensive

:37:38.:37:48.

performance from Germany as once again New Zealand are to bronze. Two

:37:49.:37:59.

goals in quick succession. In the third quarter, gave Germany all be

:38:00.:38:05.

lead they needed. The reply at the end of the food came from Olivia

:38:06.:38:08.

Merry. New Zealand could not find another way through. Germany, for

:38:09.:38:13.

the first time and there has have won the bronze medal and the all too

:38:14.:38:19.

familiar feelings for New Zealand who once again miss out in the

:38:20.:38:24.

bronze medal match, just as they did in London for my kids years ago. For

:38:25.:38:30.

some, it is too much to take. You have to look clinically at the game.

:38:31.:38:39.

New Zealand had all that pressure but could not convert. After

:38:40.:38:42.

half-time, it was a different Germany that came out and they

:38:43.:38:46.

surprised New Zealand, getting those two Michaels and close succession.

:38:47.:38:52.

In the end, just the one goal for all of the effort they put in. The

:38:53.:38:57.

team that took the opportunities has got the bronze medal and that is

:38:58.:38:58.

Germany. The German celebrations then. Like

:38:59.:39:21.

the men, they have won a bronze medal here.

:39:22.:39:32.

For New Zealand, there isn't the progression they would have wanted.

:39:33.:39:40.

Look at the age of the German side, two 19-year-olds. Some 20-year-olds.

:39:41.:39:46.

The Germans medically it would be talking but look at the young side.

:39:47.:39:53.

-- made it clear. They have come through and done the business. The

:39:54.:39:57.

hero for me apart from the goalkeeper Robert notes, --

:39:58.:40:05.

Reynolds, she has had a terrific campaign has been Nike Lorenz. She

:40:06.:40:08.

has inspired the others at the front. The last couple of matches

:40:09.:40:14.

where Germany have been so good. Look at this. Annika Sprink has got

:40:15.:40:21.

a badly but she will get a piggyback. Wonderful. Look at what

:40:22.:40:29.

it means to the rest of them. They are also excited. It is the captain

:40:30.:40:38.

Hannah Kruger that is doing it the carrying. And all the goals that New

:40:39.:40:45.

Zealand had pretend you're in full play because not find the touch and

:40:46.:40:49.

finishing in the semifinal and then the bronze medal match. Finishing

:40:50.:40:55.

and that circle eluding them. It was a much better game overall. That

:40:56.:41:00.

bronze medal match has so much going for but Germany broke it open.

:41:01.:41:03.

Scored those two goals and made New Zealand work ever so hard to get one

:41:04.:41:10.

goal. After the to be more pragmatic, New Zealand. They passed

:41:11.:41:14.

up opportunities with the could have shot but they tried to make that

:41:15.:41:19.

extra pass. It is all about trusting your instincts and playing

:41:20.:41:22.

spontaneously. We have seen that from Germany. That is Sophie Alton

:41:23.:41:30.

book coming out onto the pitch. She's been tossed around the German

:41:31.:41:34.

team. It is such a wonderful sight to see young people at the Olympics.

:41:35.:41:44.

HAZEL IRVINE: another future medallist? Congratulations to

:41:45.:41:50.

Germany since Athens 12 years ago. They take the bronze medal. For the

:41:51.:41:56.

black sticks, a second Olympics and succession they have finished in

:41:57.:42:00.

fourth place and that has to hurt. Able comeback for Tokyo. We were so

:42:01.:42:10.

used to seeing Usain Bolt of the world stage is as hard to think of

:42:11.:42:16.

an Olympics without him. To quote Jody Mitchell, you do not know what

:42:17.:42:21.

you have got until it has gone. I do not know what we will do without

:42:22.:42:26.

them. Last night, Steve Cram said it could be his last time over 200

:42:27.:42:31.

metres. If it was, what a way to go out, this was.

:42:32.:42:50.

COMMENTATOR: Monmore spin round the bend. Usain Bolt, perhaps, for the

:42:51.:42:58.

very last time goes into his blocks at the start of the 200 metres. The

:42:59.:43:03.

journey which began when he was just 15 years of age. Quite please, Mr

:43:04.:43:11.

Ball is about to start. He gets away well.

:43:12.:43:20.

Usain Bolt on his own as he has been for his entire career. Usain Bolt

:43:21.:43:28.

running away from everybody. Running to what he would love to be

:43:29.:43:32.

immortality as an athlete. 19.79 seconds. It is gold. His eighth

:43:33.:43:38.

gold. If we never see him again in a 200

:43:39.:43:53.

metres final data will be a real shame but what we need to do is to

:43:54.:44:02.

reflect on what this man has done. He worked so hard for 20 years, one

:44:03.:44:08.

that moment comes, it is a relief. You want it so much in so many

:44:09.:44:12.

things could go wrong. I ran hard on the term and nine on the street,...

:44:13.:44:17.

I looked around and I'm getting older. I am not young. I know what I

:44:18.:44:23.

need to do. I know if I do not do it will not be the same. I have to come

:44:24.:44:28.

out and get it done and that is my focus. Is this your last 200 metres

:44:29.:44:32.

at a major championship? I would like to say so but my coach has a

:44:33.:44:41.

way of convincing me. On behalf of all athletics fans, thank you very

:44:42.:44:44.

much, Usain Bolt. It might not be over. He is going for the final part

:44:45.:44:50.

of the trilogy. The sprint relay tonight. That will be at about

:44:51.:44:58.

2:30am and worth waiting for. And well done to Adam Gemili, he was

:44:59.:45:04.

just off the bronze medal. He was given the same time on the scoring

:45:05.:45:08.

as Christophe Lemaitre but he was given the bronze medal, the

:45:09.:45:12.

Frenchman. You get the feeling that Adam Gemili will be around for a

:45:13.:45:13.

long time. Nick Skelton has been around for a

:45:14.:45:27.

long time and show-jumping, and then -- Ben Mayer, very much part of the

:45:28.:45:33.

final of the individual show-jumping, Great Britain has not

:45:34.:45:38.

won a medal for 44 years, but things look particularly good for Nick

:45:39.:45:47.

Skelton this morning. It has all gone a little bit harsh.

:45:48.:46:05.

-- hushed. The Brazilian riders in the ring, one of those who had four

:46:06.:46:14.

faults, as did Ben Mayer, and because so many were on four, 27 are

:46:15.:46:20.

taking part in this competition this afternoon.

:46:21.:46:25.

How significantly different is the course concurred with this morning?

:46:26.:46:33.

It is still a big course and it comes down to 68 seconds to take in

:46:34.:46:37.

the ten fences. The horses will have two motor around, but these are big,

:46:38.:46:44.

white fences, these rights, so it really will be interesting to watch

:46:45.:46:49.

first couple, as all the top riders are doing, to see the best way

:46:50.:46:53.

around the course. And great so far for the French,

:46:54.:47:01.

with the eventing, but who do you tip to look out for, apart from the

:47:02.:47:07.

British, obviously? It would be fantastic if Nick

:47:08.:47:14.

Skelton and Big Star could get a medal, they really felt they should

:47:15.:47:23.

have got one in London, and Germany have two Mac riders in the top 13

:47:24.:47:27.

with no penalties, they really will want to write some wrongs, cause

:47:28.:47:33.

they were to dominate across all equestrian fields in these games but

:47:34.:47:37.

it has not happened and they will be determined to leave with a gold.

:47:38.:47:44.

Thank you for setting it up, let's join the commentators for the final

:47:45.:47:47.

round in this individual show-jumping competition.

:47:48.:47:54.

The tension is really building, the first of the 27, completing a clear

:47:55.:48:06.

round inside the time. The crowd have absolutely gone wild. Now we

:48:07.:48:16.

are going to watch the Swedish rider Henrik Von Eckermann, one of 12 who

:48:17.:48:22.

got four faults in the first round. 68 seconds is the time they have got

:48:23.:48:40.

to get round. Henrik sets off at a really strong pace. The time should

:48:41.:48:51.

be doable. A big sweep around, a lot of room to make up. Very very

:48:52.:48:58.

careful going in. A week stretch in the middle. These riders, if they

:48:59.:49:05.

get any more fences down their individual hopes will be completely

:49:06.:49:10.

gone. With as many clear round as we have

:49:11.:49:15.

the medals are likely to come from those clear round, don't you think?

:49:16.:49:21.

Yes, and with another fence down it is definitely all over for Henrik.

:49:22.:49:27.

That massive double. It seems to be jumping quite well but it is

:49:28.:49:33.

absolutely huge, 190 wide, a very big fence to finish.

:49:34.:49:40.

12 in this round, for in the previous, -- four, he is not through

:49:41.:49:49.

to this individual final, Von Eckermann of Sweden, a score of 60.

:49:50.:49:56.

It is so much about the dimensions of the course more than the

:49:57.:50:06.

technicalities. We watch the round of Henrik Von Eckermann and we get

:50:07.:50:17.

the news that Harrie Smolders is not going in this final individual

:50:18.:50:26.

round, so incomes Ben Maher of Britain, with Tic Tac, the horse

:50:27.:50:33.

brilliantly ridden in the previous round, but at a disadvantage with

:50:34.:50:39.

his four faults. The bill has been wrong. Not quite ready, warned to

:50:40.:50:46.

hold. Now he is given the all clear to start.

:50:47.:50:55.

With this big jump, he and his stallion, not being together that

:50:56.:51:07.

long, using pace, which has been a feature of his week, one or two back

:51:08.:51:12.

rails down. With two Mac fences down I think he will probably retire.

:51:13.:51:17.

Just see what he does from here on in. He is a fighter, Ben Maher, has

:51:18.:51:24.

been working hard all week, but has not had the best of luck. He is

:51:25.:51:31.

pressing on. Ten fences on this course. A big open five strides, up

:51:32.:51:40.

to fence seven. Just reminding everybody watching that lots of

:51:41.:51:46.

riders are coming in that have already jumped clear. So any of

:51:47.:51:53.

these early riders with four faults, any more faults at all and their

:51:54.:51:56.

chances are gone, and that another one there into the double. Coming to

:51:57.:52:03.

the last on a score of 12. High and wide. He has got a time fought to

:52:04.:52:10.

add as well. It is a total of 13 in this round. 17 for the two Mac

:52:11.:52:16.

rounds for Great Britain's Ben Maher, on a horse he has not been

:52:17.:52:21.

riding that long. He has done well and you can see the intense

:52:22.:52:25.

pressure. This really is a proper Olympic track, there are not many

:52:26.:52:30.

fillers, which means the horses have just got light poles to jump.

:52:31.:52:36.

Absolute maximum height. Allowed to build jumps up to one metre 60. And

:52:37.:52:57.

we have spreads of up to 1.90. Ironic, is out goes Ben Maher and

:52:58.:53:10.

incomes the horse who took London gold, and this classic Canadian lady

:53:11.:53:15.

rider, Tiffany Foster, has really ridden this horse very well indeed.

:53:16.:53:35.

Canada also has Eric Le Mans, on a clear round, Canada have been up

:53:36.:53:41.

there with the best teams throughout this competition. They missed out on

:53:42.:53:46.

a medal in the end having jumped off with Germany for the bronze, but

:53:47.:53:51.

this combination is certainly played their part in the jump off, it was

:53:52.:53:55.

not for the want of trying from Triple X III and Tiffany. Canada's

:53:56.:53:59.

Tiffany Foster, and Triple X III. Show-jumping, normally a rattle like

:54:00.:54:20.

that the fence would come down. But it has stayed there.

:54:21.:54:32.

This track is really proving to be so difficult. Just that one clear

:54:33.:54:43.

round so far from the first to go, Luciana Diniz, and since then we

:54:44.:54:49.

have seen a lot of polls come down. A big horse like Triple X III, it is

:54:50.:54:57.

very hot, probably just tiring coming into the jump. That's right,

:54:58.:55:03.

there is a bit of a breeze, but these horses, we had the final team

:55:04.:55:09.

round on Wednesday, a day off yesterday, but this second round

:55:10.:55:12.

today is in extreme heat and you do get the feeling that the horses look

:55:13.:55:19.

a bit jaded. Another time fault. 17 for this round, and the individual

:55:20.:55:24.

total, Tiffany Foster of Canada, on 21. Triple X III, big strong horse,

:55:25.:55:33.

carrying bulk and timber, it is the way he is built, just starting to

:55:34.:55:38.

struggle in the heat, jumped bail offences, was involved in the

:55:39.:55:43.

jumpoff for Canada, just tiring for this round. -- jumped a lot of

:55:44.:55:50.

fences. This really is tiring, big, big fences.

:55:51.:55:56.

A quick reminder that there are 12 to jump first, all with four faults,

:55:57.:56:02.

then two Mac with one time fault, then we go into the clear rounds.

:56:03.:56:10.

That is where Nick Skelton is at the moment with Big Star, still very

:56:11.:56:17.

much in contention for a medal, what he has dreamt of for four years.

:56:18.:56:23.

This is now the very talented French rider Philippe Rozier with four

:56:24.:56:32.

faults from the first round, another one goes. But he has had a game is

:56:33.:56:37.

to dream of. Comes in is reserved for the French, brings home team

:56:38.:56:42.

gold, and a chance for silver or bronze in the individual, I think,

:56:43.:56:48.

gone now. The tough thing with this course is not only the dimensions,

:56:49.:56:54.

there are a lot of very light fences, not a great deal of

:56:55.:56:58.

substance to the jumps to get the horses in the air. And you cannot

:56:59.:57:02.

ride at these fences without a fair bit of pace. Again, the polls

:57:03.:57:10.

starting to come down. A big strong stallion tiring in the heat. The

:57:11.:57:14.

horses, with that extra bit of energy and fizz, they are going to

:57:15.:57:18.

be much happier with these conditions. Eight, the jump in

:57:19.:57:30.

total. Playing an important part again, as you might have expected,

:57:31.:57:33.

time and not play a big part in the first round but it is this time.

:57:34.:57:38.

That is a total of nine for the second round and he goes on to a

:57:39.:57:43.

score of 13, the Frenchman, Philippe Rozier. He just could not keep his

:57:44.:57:48.

horse careful. They do love the horses, there are a

:57:49.:58:18.

lot of young people here, so good to see, as incomes the 33-year-old

:58:19.:58:34.

Pedro Veniss, speaks four languages, riding Quabri L'Isles, the French

:58:35.:58:41.

bred stallion. There are a lot of people with some very good horses,

:58:42.:58:47.

he is one of the world's leading show-jumping sires. Quite

:58:48.:59:00.

extraordinary, this round, Luciana Diniz, came in first, jumped a clear

:59:01.:59:05.

round in the time, and since then nothing like a clear round. Gives

:59:06.:59:08.

you some idea of how tough this is. He is taking his time around here,

:59:09.:59:33.

Pedro. Quite a long way to go to the finish and he has got less than ten

:59:34.:59:45.

seconds. He has jumped it clear but he has got the one time fault. That

:59:46.:59:57.

puts him on a score of five. For the two rounds, I cannot see him winning

:59:58.:00:02.

a medal on it, but he does himself no harm, and the crowd are just

:00:03.:00:08.

going mad. Decided not to worry about time, kept it deliberate, kept

:00:09.:00:12.

the horse Allinson, fantastic efforts. -- kept the horse balanced.

:00:13.:00:19.

And the home crowd have got some atmosphere now, they loved it.

:00:20.:00:26.

Britain are still in with a chance of a medal. That would be wonderful.

:00:27.:00:35.

If Britain could achieve another medal.

:00:36.:00:47.

We have got some more to come, five of them in all. The competition is

:00:48.:01:01.

ratcheting up gradually. We thought there might be one or two... Harrie

:01:02.:01:10.

Smolders has not brought his horse through to this. Qatar and the first

:01:11.:01:19.

Olympics are performed well. They have got two riders in this final

:01:20.:01:20.

stage. One thing down in that first round.

:01:21.:01:52.

His first Olympics. They take part in both.

:01:53.:02:18.

This will be interesting to watch as he got the class and quality to keep

:02:19.:02:29.

jumping? We know he has got the ability. Interestingly, trying to

:02:30.:02:35.

move up. He had some time faults during the competition and does not

:02:36.:02:43.

need one here. Tremendous power down the combination. That was

:02:44.:02:43.

impressive. It is one of the horses to emerge as

:02:44.:03:08.

a world-class jumping machine. Absolutely brilliant through the

:03:09.:03:13.

trying to gallop to the last and will not make it. The last five have

:03:14.:03:25.

all had time faults. It is one time fault. He is another who finishes on

:03:26.:03:33.

five for the two rounds in the individual championship. What a

:03:34.:03:46.

spectacular horse mackerel three as. Sting Street in his body. Lots of

:03:47.:03:51.

hate, front-end and back-end. It would be a joy to ride a horse like

:03:52.:03:56.

that. And the joy of being here, we have seen so many of them, it has

:03:57.:04:01.

been a spectacle. It has been a feast of jumping this week. That

:04:02.:04:10.

horse has emerged with credit. France, could they get a double,

:04:11.:04:16.

could they build on the team show-jumping gold? That was a

:04:17.:04:23.

tremendous performance. The man we see now is Kevin Stout. He has been

:04:24.:04:29.

any French team every championship since 2007. In 2009 he won the

:04:30.:04:33.

European title individually at Windsor. He is riding the very

:04:34.:04:42.

reliable Reveur De Hurtebise. 15 years old now. They had one fence

:04:43.:04:51.

down and the last round. We only have the one double clear.

:04:52.:05:22.

You would expect to go inside the time. I would be surprised if he

:05:23.:05:28.

gets a time fault. He has that elegant French way of riding, like

:05:29.:05:34.

seat. Always travelling. Having to work very hard down the combination.

:05:35.:05:44.

Brilliantly written so far. Not one fence down. This is the fence he had

:05:45.:05:56.

in the last round. He is galloping into the triple bar. And maybe got

:05:57.:06:05.

tight to it. Both parts have gone. Kevin Stout is not going to win a

:06:06.:06:11.

medal today. He will go home of the team gold. It is a... In this

:06:12.:06:16.

individual round. Four in the first and total of 12 for the star

:06:17.:06:19.

Frenchman, Kevin Stout. We still have Roger Yves Bost to

:06:20.:06:36.

come. Number nine is such a big fence. Very hard to jump that, wider

:06:37.:06:43.

triple bar. Enormous amount of power without using pace. When you use

:06:44.:06:48.

that pace, the shape of the junk goes. These horses and riders go

:06:49.:06:58.

right to the limit. America, this combination was a potential

:06:59.:07:00.

individual gold medal winner but it is not to be. He had one fence down

:07:01.:07:05.

and a first round. It is McLain Ward. He is on Azur. He won lots of

:07:06.:07:19.

Grand Prix is at the top level this year. He's going to go home with the

:07:20.:07:24.

team silver. An individual medal now is unlikely for this combination.

:07:25.:07:35.

Some of the other sports are predictable at times but not

:07:36.:07:38.

show-jumping. You'd never know what will happen next. This combination

:07:39.:07:41.

is definitely one of the big favourites. One fence down at all

:07:42.:07:46.

and his chances have gone. You could hear him save whoa but he

:07:47.:08:20.

got it. He has left everything intact. Clear round. He is like

:08:21.:08:28.

Luciana Diniz. We have got an equal first place at this point of time.

:08:29.:08:34.

The American McLain Ward and the Portuguese rider Luciana Diniz.

:08:35.:08:40.

Watching this round, this is why you can see the ability of Azur. Super

:08:41.:08:46.

accurate rider, McLain Ward. That is why they were so well fancied. Still

:08:47.:08:49.

carrying those four faults. The crowd has fallen remarkably

:08:50.:09:13.

quiet for a Brazilian rider to come in. It is Alvaro de Miranda.

:09:14.:09:38.

He is on Cornetto K. He is a man that has been based in Europe and

:09:39.:09:41.

has been successful for many years. Although the distance problems on

:09:42.:09:53.

this course are very straightforward. It is just about if

:09:54.:09:59.

you have enough jump. Visual horse going to operate? Can he dig deep if

:10:00.:10:01.

he's tired? It is close going into the double.

:10:02.:10:30.

He jumped it. The crowd sitting very nervously. He has always been

:10:31.:10:44.

stylish. He is clear and the second round two round total of four.

:10:45.:10:55.

There are three on four faults that are waiting to jump on the medals.

:10:56.:11:04.

These later riders coming in, they have had some that are clear. Any

:11:05.:11:09.

mistake and they are going to be in trouble. I think we are still going

:11:10.:11:16.

to get some double clears. It is all he can do. Very good style. George

:11:17.:11:21.

Morris taking on the training of the Brazilians just this year for the

:11:22.:11:25.

Olympic Games. He retired from the American job. He has really wonder

:11:26.:11:31.

them up to some very good show-jumping here. Now it is one of

:11:32.:11:45.

the stars from the Dutch. It is Maikel van der Vleuten with Verdi.

:11:46.:11:58.

He is one fence down. They did have somebody go clear that was Jeroen

:11:59.:12:07.

Dubbeldam. Not even Maikel van der Vleuten could do anything to get the

:12:08.:12:11.

Dutch ET medal at the European Championships. That was a surprise.

:12:12.:12:15.

-- 18 medal. Verdi is tithing. He is a big,

:12:16.:12:25.

heavily built stallion. He had a lazy jump.

:12:26.:12:31.

-- tiring. The Dutch are not had the best Championships one fence down

:12:32.:12:47.

and some of the other riders on four faults have went clear. The

:12:48.:12:49.

individual hopes have gone for Maikel van der Vleuten. They still

:12:50.:12:59.

have one more to come. It is Jeroen Dubbeldam. It is not quite over for

:13:00.:13:01.

them yet. That is typical Verdi. That big

:13:02.:13:14.

double. It is so difficult to jump but it is very easy. Good round.

:13:15.:13:25.

Nine overall for Maikel van der Vleuten from Holland.

:13:26.:13:30.

HAZEL IRVINE: Nick Skelton, the big star, about seven minutes away. Two

:13:31.:13:36.

more competitors before Nick Skelton and his seventh Olympic steps in for

:13:37.:13:41.

Great Britain. Thank to win his first medal in this event, the

:13:42.:13:46.

individual jumping, since 1972. It has been 44 John Beers. We will

:13:47.:13:50.

completely destroyed in the individual show-jumping over on the

:13:51.:13:55.

other side. We are popping over to BBC Two. We will see you there.

:13:56.:14:02.

in a brand-new BBC Two quiz show, Debatable,

:14:03.:14:13.

where a team of celebrities put their debating skills to the test

:14:14.:14:16.

to try to win their contestants pots of cash.

:14:17.:14:19.

Will they help, or will they hinder?
