It took them ten hours of ddbate, but today, Jersey's politichans

rejected plans for the Bailhff to be removed as speaker of the States.

There was a move to hold a binding referendum in the Autumn whhch

could've seen him replaced with an elected speaker. But today's

decision is not likely to bd the end of the issue. Jen Smith reports on

A move to delay a debate on plans to reduce car use in Guernsey has been

rejected. Two strategies have been put forward by the Environmdnt

Department and a number of changes to both have been suggested by

politicians. The main proposals include a free bus service, a width

tax on large vehicles and more cycle lanes. The debate will conthnue

tomorrow. Sark's government has unveiled a new weapon in thd fight

against crime. Chief Pleas have approved a controversial proposal to

allow the island's volunteer police to use Pava Spray, which is similar

to pepper spray. It can inc`pacitate a person for around 30 minutes

without causing injury. Michael Kings reports. Sark doesn't have a

police force. The island relies on volunteer constables who're trained

by Guernsey Police. And it was after one training session that it was

suggested that Pava Spray would be a useful deterrent to have in Sark.

I've had a look at these today, which are the incidents involving

constables in Sark, and there were more than 350 incidents last year.

However many of them are relatively minor, the majority can be classed

as tractor permissions and hn the last decade the island's prhson has

only been used four times. So the thought of using Pava Spray has

divided the island according to its Deputy Chairman of the Douz`ine
