Good evening. Guernsey's Environment Minister has resigned, along with

two other board members, ovdr the introduction of paid parking.

Deputies voted it through ydsterday along with a raft of other leasures

aimed at cutting car use in the island. Penny Elderfield reports.

Much like buses, when one resignation crops up, suddenly you

get three. Roger Domaille, Barry Paint and Tony Spruce have `ll quit.

Not that it came as that much of a shock to States members arrhving

today. I am not surprised. H think it is the honourable thing for those

who lost out on the voting to do. We want it carried on by peopld fully

committed. A strategy that hncluded one thing all three of them didn't

want. Paid parking. I am a consistent opponent of paid parking.

Whilst I enjoy the job, I think it is time for someone else to lead on

the paid parking. And with `nother few resignations to add to the list,

the number since the current States was elected is rapidly approaching

the 20s. If a department's proposals are rejected by the States, people

tend to resign. It tends to happen on issues which divide the public.

Of course, as soon as the ndws of a resignation breaks, so does the talk

about who'll take on that Mhnister title. And it looks like ond of the

politicians who pushed for paid parking is already emerging as a

favourite to take the new transport strategy forward. Still thinking

about whether she wants the top job, Deputy Yvonne Burford `lready

has some support. It will not be for at least a year. We want a

first`class bus running before that. It will be a while before it

happens. While the public is split on the idea of paid parking, whoever

is in charge will have a totgh job convincing everyone the States have

got it right this time. Condor says it's working with UK

politicians and Channel Isl`nd governments to keep sailing in and

out of Weymouth. There were concerns the ferry company would withdraw its

service because the berths `t Weymouth are too narrow for a new

boat, like this one, it hopds to buy. Local councillors want the UK

Government to pay ?10 million towards the necessary work on

Weymouth harbour. Meanwhile business leaders in Jersey say Condor still

needs to agree it's ramp license or permit to operate in and out of

Jersey. At the moment, they are discussing with the authorities for

a long`term licence. From otr point of view, this has to be resolved

within the next couple of months. We are in an election year. If it is

not resolved, it will probably go on until next year.

Tesco products could soon bd on sale in the site of a former fancy`dress

shop Horseplay in St Helier. The shop on York Street is closhng down

and the BBC understands it's been acquired by the Guernsey colpany

Alliance which sells Tesco food and groceries in its Guernsey store

Managing Director Andrew Bagot recently confirmed it was hoping to

do the same in Jersey and w`s in talks about several sites.

Jersey's health department hs considering working with thd Isle of

Man to look at independent regulation across the health system.

Hospitals in both islands are currently self`regulated, although

Jersey benchmarks itself ag`inst similar jurisdictions, or the UK, in

comparable areas of the health service. The Health Minister has

been discussing ways to work together to create regulation

suitable for British island jurisdictions and be more cost

every part of the Channel Islands over the last five days. Today, the

Queen's baton was island`hopping around Alderney, Herm and S`rk and

the BBC's Ben Moore was there. The pattern was on its way. Visiting

me were most remote parts of the British Isles. The pattern was held

aloft as Guernsey's lifeboat brought it to shore at St Andrews to cheers.

I have a great nephew running in the relay. Once`in`a`lifetime

experience. I am from Glasgow. I can take it with me! The focus was on

the children. Grace, Mark Tdrry s first barrel. What was it lhke? ``

Alderney's first carrier. Vdry heavy. The hatches were battened

down for the race to Sark. The oldest girl at the island's School,

Catherine, she brought it from the harbour. On its journey, it has been

on a canoe, a steam train and underwater. Here an Sark, f`med for

not having any cars on the hsland, it is travelling by what locals call

the Toast rack. A crowd gathered. People on these islands are pleased

they got to host the relay hn their own way. It is wonderful to being

colluded in the relay. Parthcularly for the children. The lifeboat crew

delivered the relay to Herm, one of the smallest of the Channel Islands.

One of the smaller schools hn the British Isles, nine pupils, but no

less an it. It is really he`vy. I am holding a flag. This is me doing

gymnastics. The relay has now finished its tour of the Ch`nnel

Islands and it is heading north to the UK. It will not forget the

reception it got in the southernmost part of the British Isles.
