Teenagers caught with cigardttes on them in Guernsey could f`ce up to

It's the latest idea from the Health Department in a bid to try

and stop people smoking and protect children from the dangers.

In the last 60 years, attittdes to smoking have changed drastically.

Now it's all about graphic warnings, hammering home the risks

The States war against cigarettes is an ongoing battle.

And teenage smokers are now the latest target.

Under`18s could face a fine of up to ?500 in future

The reason we are doing it hs that smoking at a young age is vdry

harmful and we know children are under peer pressure to take up

smoking, it is damaging to their health and that please have to

intervene in the child's interest. Peer pressure is something teenagers

at this youth that are award of although none of them smoke

themselves. I know a couple of people who smoke and I do not like

it. I don't see a reason whx you would smoke with all the help risks.

But he isn't convinced a hefty fine is the best way of stopping them.

It's fairly steep and harsh. I think they are made aware in school of the

damage they are doing to thdir bodies, but at the end of the day,

they are teenagers, and you will never be able to stop 100% of young

Jersey Post are extending their Call and Check scheme, where postal

workers check on the welfard of elderly and vulnerable pdople.

It's been piloted in St Brelade since November and will now be

extended to three more parishes and could even be rolled out in

Call and Check in the UK, and they are coming over to discuss how that

could happen. Back here, the scheme is now being

extended to three more parishes ` And it could be island`wide
