Jersey Police have serious concerns on what they have labelled `n

illegal service being offerdd through social media. Jersex Lifts

is a Facebook page where people are offering or asking for lifts ` many

in exchange for money, instdad of using licensed taxis.

In just 12 hours, there werd 12 posts asking for or offering lifts

A place lifts can be arrangdd between friends and strangers.

Information on some of these journeys in the last three

At least two drivers are disqualified from driving.

One person offering lifts h`s been detained

Another male is known to befriend young vulnerable females.

Women as young as 17 or 18 `re offering lifts to strangers.

And drivers are trying to strike up social meetings after lifts.

There is an element of apathy in terms of this being young pdople

offering lifts for petrol money but this is different, this is `bout

strangers accepting lifts and placing themselves in danger. It is

not to shock the public but hopefully get them to listen to what

we are saying, this is an unsafe occupation to be engaging whth.

One of the drivers we spoke to said they can't get a job

because they have a criminal record ` so this is a way of making money.

But what drivers may not re`lise is that they are not covered

Your insurance company could void your policy in the event of an

accident because you are making money if you are delivering

passengers, this is something which is not always covered by a policy,

so you could be opening yourself to being uninsured in the event of an

After a long day of debate ` significant plans to safegu`rd

Guernsey's dairy industry h`ve been given the go ahead. It'll mdan

changes for everyone from f`rmers, to customers.

This is all aimed at making sure the dairy industry is here to stay.

Picking up on some of the kdy points, milk quotas will be scrapped

for farmers. For customers ` there won't be a fixed price for lilk so

you'll be able to shop around. And the laws on importing milk will be

tightened up, to ensure that can't happen.

That has been a massive grex area that has held up investment in the

industry, made it behave in a certain way so that no one wants to

move one way or the other, so getting through a new milk ordnance

and getting this review through will be the most important thing we can

do. The most contentious issue, though,

was about doorstep deliverids. Many of the distributors were thdre to

hear debate. It was important to them because they've built tp

businesses based on their individual And although they'd still bd able to

deliver milk under the plans, their zone wouldn't be protected. But it

was decided another report looking at just that side of the industry is

needed before a decision is made on that ` a report that should be out

next summer. Plans for a new supermarket and 41
