Good evening welcome to BBC Channel Islands. | :00:00. | :00:09.
Islanders lose thousands in a sophisticated scam. | :00:10. | :00:20.
I feel like it was really stupid we were taken in with it. But the fact | :00:21. | :00:29.
that we thought we were onto the fraud department, that was | :00:30. | :00:29.
different. Could Guernsey be | :00:30. | :00:33.
a starting point for cruise ships? You get a picture in your mhnd of | :00:34. | :00:47.
what it would have been likd in the battle. | :00:48. | :00:56.
And history in miniature, why these school children are re`enacting | :00:57. | :00:59.
Seven scam victims in Jersey have been conned out | :01:00. | :01:04.
The fraud involves scammers ringing up pretending to be your bank, | :01:05. | :01:09.
and instructing you to transfer your money to a separate account, | :01:10. | :01:11.
For Iain and Reena Mclean it all started with a phone call. | :01:12. | :01:25.
With a person at the other dnd claiming their credit card had been | :01:26. | :01:35.
He gave me a reference numbdr and asked if I had my credit card. And | :01:36. | :01:45.
he said, we would like you to read out, there is a number at the back | :01:46. | :01:50.
of your credit card, contact them as soon as possible. | :01:51. | :01:54.
Iain did make that phone call but the fraudsters didn't dhsconnect | :01:55. | :01:56.
the line and pretended they were from Iain and Reena's bank. | :01:57. | :01:59.
They convinced them to transfer ?6,200 to what they thought was | :02:00. | :02:02.
But when Iain and Reena went to their branch | :02:03. | :02:05.
and spoke to the bank managdr they realised what had happened. | :02:06. | :02:10.
I feel like we were being rdally stupid. That we were taken hn with | :02:11. | :02:17.
this. But the fact that we thought we were onto the fraud department, | :02:18. | :02:27.
that was different. Banks do not phone and order people to transfer | :02:28. | :02:31.
money. It does not happen. They give apparently legitimate detail to | :02:32. | :02:34.
carry off their fraud. They might talk about particular trans`ctions. | :02:35. | :02:41.
They might say, destroy your card. It is important to realise that they | :02:42. | :02:43.
will stop at nothing to get your money. | :02:44. | :02:48.
Iain and Reena don't want sympathy but | :02:49. | :02:50.
say they don't want what's happened to them to happen to any others | :02:51. | :02:56.
Would a deep water berth brhnging in more cruise ships be better for | :02:57. | :02:59.
There are calls for the isl`nd to take advantage of the growing | :03:00. | :03:03.
popularity of cruise holidaxs by becoming more than just ` stop | :03:04. | :03:06.
More than 100 cruise ships have moored off Guernsey this ye`r with | :03:07. | :03:12.
many already planning a return next year. | :03:13. | :03:14.
It is one of the most visited ports in northern | :03:15. | :03:16.
But some feel the island should be more than a destination, | :03:17. | :03:21.
An infrastructure expert who helped design Hong Kong's cruise tdrminal | :03:22. | :03:27.
and is currently advising port planners at Fort Lauderdale | :03:28. | :03:30.
in America says Guernsey should be a starting port for cruise ships. | :03:31. | :03:38.
We could look at it becoming a turnaround port for cruising. Taking | :03:39. | :03:46.
advantage of revenues coming in with people flying to the Island, | :03:47. | :03:52.
joining cruises and revenues while they are here, spending on | :03:53. | :03:56.
restaurants and so on. Therd would be an attraction for cruise | :03:57. | :03:59.
operators with a potential of uplifting fuel at 15p per lhtre | :04:00. | :04:02.
cheaper than they could get in Southampton. That needs to be | :04:03. | :04:07.
thought out as a part of a single integrated package. | :04:08. | :04:11.
So would people be keen to fly to Guernsey to start their cruhse? | :04:12. | :04:14.
We asked potential passengers in Hull. | :04:15. | :04:18.
It would be too much hassle. Yes, I would agree with that. Yes, I would | :04:19. | :04:28.
definitely do that. It sounds like it would be very intensive, with a | :04:29. | :04:31.
significant infrastructure investment. I am not sure where that | :04:32. | :04:38.
would fit in at the moment. Just one cruise ship overlooking Saint Peter | :04:39. | :04:41.
port and if the Island wants to compete with established ports like | :04:42. | :04:44.
Southampton, steering the rhght course will take a look of loney and | :04:45. | :04:46.
determination. `` a lot of. The message is getting throtgh and | :04:47. | :06:38.
it is important. We can build on that and have some friends to speak | :06:39. | :06:41.
for us when we are not around. We cannot be everywhere at all times. | :06:42. | :06:46.
If it is Westminster, or Brtssels, we have people that underst`nd us | :06:47. | :06:49.
and can defend us when we are misrepresented. Does it makd you | :06:50. | :06:54.
wish we had party politics hn the Channel Islands, seeing how much | :06:55. | :06:57.
they support each other and voters know what they stand for? I would | :06:58. | :07:03.
not want UK party politics. It is a big jurisdiction and it would not | :07:04. | :07:07.
fit in. There are benefits hn the forums which exist at the p`rty | :07:08. | :07:12.
conferences like this. Which can inform people. So that they know | :07:13. | :07:16.
what they are voting for. Btt the system working in the UK wotld not | :07:17. | :07:22.
work in Jerseyl and Guernsex. This is BBC Channel Islands News. Coming | :07:23. | :07:27.
up... How a lost underwater camera was reunited with its owner, thanks | :07:28. | :07:28.
to these children. If you were in St Helier today. . | :07:29. | :07:35.
You might have seen this... British and Jersey soldiers have | :07:36. | :07:44.
been battling the French ag`in But today's re`enactment of | :07:45. | :07:46.
the Battle of Jersey looked rather different to the real thing of 781, | :07:47. | :07:50.
as it was performed by children Everything from that building | :07:51. | :07:53.
onwards would have been open Imagining what it would havd been | :07:54. | :07:57.
like heading into battle in 178 . Pupils from St John's school | :07:58. | :08:02.
gathered at Westmount, just as Major Peirsons troops did on | :08:03. | :08:04.
the morning of the 6th of J`nuary. They've been learning about | :08:05. | :08:08.
the Battle of Jersey, when French forces invaded the island as part of | :08:09. | :08:10.
the American War of Independence. But to make this history | :08:11. | :08:13.
lesson more exciting... ..they marched to | :08:14. | :08:19.
the square where battle comlenced, Jersey history is very important in | :08:20. | :08:42.
the history that is taught hn our schools. Everybody wants to give the | :08:43. | :08:46.
children a sense of longing and having ownership over their culture. | :08:47. | :08:52.
And their history. `` belonging To understand where you have come from. | :08:53. | :08:55.
And it seems taking the lesson out of the classroom this | :08:56. | :08:58.
When will you re`enact and do it it makes it easier to understand. It | :08:59. | :09:09.
makes you understand it was actually the battle. Going outside and doing | :09:10. | :09:13.
it you learn more about it `nd how it has changed. | :09:14. | :09:17.
The Battle of Jersey may have taken pl`ce more | :09:18. | :09:19.
than 230 years ago, but tod`y's re`enactment and support from local | :09:20. | :09:22.
This year's Branchage Film Festival in Jersey came to | :09:23. | :09:33.
a dramatic end last night whth an impressive light show. | :09:34. | :09:40.
Images were beamed onto St Aubin's Fort while thous`nds | :09:41. | :09:47.
watched on, listening to a live concert by the Radiophonic Workshop, | :09:48. | :09:49.
who are the team behind the music and sounds for Doctor Who. | :09:50. | :09:58.
Something a little different for a Sunday evening. Now the weather | :09:59. | :10:03.
Will it be said inside with the jumper? There is a chance, `nd I use | :10:04. | :10:11.
the word chance, we will welcome some rain, there is a chancd of rain | :10:12. | :10:16.
at the end of the week ahead. We might have some showers on | :10:17. | :10:20.
Wednesday. It is still dry `nd relatively mild. Missed and rather | :10:21. | :10:25.
cloudy. Some sunny spells ddveloping later. No need to put your central | :10:26. | :10:31.
heating on just yet. A line of cloud from the far West. That will | :10:32. | :10:35.
threaten us as we are moving into Wednesday. Overnight tomorrow night | :10:36. | :10:39.
and Wednesday. A couple of systems getting a bit closer. They `re one | :10:40. | :10:43.
thing into this high pressure from the west coast of Spain and | :10:44. | :10:49.
Portugal. `` moving into. It is a fairly weak affair by the thme they | :10:50. | :10:53.
get there. I would not expect much in terms of rain. Maybe mord cloudy | :10:54. | :10:58.
conditions on Wednesday with a risk of showers. Real changes into the | :10:59. | :11:03.
weekend. From overnight, a risk of showers to the south of us. We will | :11:04. | :11:07.
watch them carefully. They light be brushing past us briefly. M`inly dry | :11:08. | :11:13.
overnight. Maybe some places will have some misty patches. A | :11:14. | :11:16.
relatively mild night down to 1 degrees. Tomorrow, it will start a | :11:17. | :11:22.
bit grey and cloudy. The sunshine will work across it. Into the | :11:23. | :11:26.
afternoon, a pleasant day, with unusually warm weather. 19, 20 | :11:27. | :11:32.
degrees. Generally light winds from the South West and a bit more | :11:33. | :11:35.
variable in the second half of the day. That is the coastal waters | :11:36. | :11:43.
forecast. Onto the times of high water, at Saint Peter port... And | :11:44. | :11:51.
for the surfers... Up to about two feet. That is the best we c`n | :11:52. | :11:57.
expect. On Wednesday, mostlx fine and dry, and on Thursday and Friday. | :11:58. | :12:01.
Friday night and into Saturday, potentially more widespread rain. | :12:02. | :12:06.
Have a good evening. Thank xou, David. Not quite awesome just yet. A | :12:07. | :12:12.
reminder of the top stories tonight and islanders in Jersey havd been | :12:13. | :12:16.
conned out of a total of allost ?150,000 by phone scammers posing as | :12:17. | :12:22.
their banks. That is how it is looking in the Channel Islands are | :12:23. | :12:26.
cycling. I am back at ten. @nd now the rest of your programme. `` this | :12:27. | :12:28.
evening. Somerset County Cricket Club's | :12:29. | :12:47.
embarked on a week`long bikd ride Dave Gibbins has been to thd start | :12:48. | :12:57.
in St Austell to find out why. Here he is with all the det`ils and | :12:58. | :13:03.
the rest of the sports news, which sees the city of Exeter at the | :13:04. | :13:06.
forefront of a successful wdekend. While the bikes are being prepared | :13:07. | :13:12.
for Somerset County Cricket Club's 500 mile trip across the Sotth West | :13:13. | :13:15.
this week, which they should complete next Friday | :13:16. | :13:18.
when they arrive back in Tatnton. It is in a bid to raise funds | :13:19. | :13:23.
for their brand`new pavilion, which would bring the Countx ground | :13:24. | :13:26.
up to international standard. And Exeter Chiefs maintained | :13:27. | :13:29.
their fine start to the preliership season with win number thred | :13:30. | :13:34.
against Harlequins at Sandy Park. With that, | :13:35. | :13:37.
we bring news of a role revdrsal The fans have had plenty to cheer | :13:38. | :13:42.
already this year, but the record Just two wins | :13:43. | :13:48.
in the last nine league gamds. It only took a couple of minutes for | :13:49. | :13:56.
them to sew an early seed of doubt. There was no stopping | :13:57. | :13:59.
the runaway train. Into the second half, | :14:00. | :14:09.
and this happened. I'm going to yellow card 14 | :14:10. | :14:16.
for the tackle in the air. Normally teams concede points | :14:17. | :14:26.
when they are in the sin bin. Three defeats in a row had left the | :14:27. | :14:29.
Pirates bottom of the champhonship. Tom Kessle's second try sectred | :14:30. | :14:48.
the win. What Plymouth Albion would give | :14:49. | :14:56.
for a win. Sinking four tries against Bedford | :14:57. | :14:58.
condemned them to another ddfeat. We'll be talking to Somerset | :14:59. | :15:04.
in a moment when they set off The weekend's football, Exeter city, | :15:05. | :15:14.
and what a performance as they beat Despite their dominance, | :15:15. | :15:22.
Plymouth Argyle fell to a lone goal to leave them whth three | :15:23. | :15:36.
defeats in the last four gales. They will be disappointed whth | :15:37. | :15:43.
a 2`0 setback at Crawley Town Two goals in two minutes catse | :15:44. | :15:45.
the damage in Sussex. Torquay had two players sent off | :15:46. | :15:51.
in their fourth play against United as they dropped to fourth | :15:52. | :15:54.
in the conference.Plymouth Raiders basketball season, comparably taking | :15:55. | :16:12.
care at Surrey United. Here at the start of | :16:13. | :16:14.
Somerset County Cricket Club's bike marathon which will last five days, | :16:15. | :16:17.
this is day one. It is all in aid of trying to | :16:18. | :16:19.
attract international crickdt to the County ground in Taunton with the | :16:20. | :16:22.
building of a brand`new pavhlion. We have the new build starthng | :16:23. | :16:26.
imminently at the County ground As much awareness as we can | :16:27. | :16:29.
create and money we can ranging This is my fourth ride of this | :16:30. | :16:31.
length, and it is brilliant fun I'm sure we'll see a lot | :16:32. | :16:39.
of people en route. We will stop at cricket clubs | :16:40. | :16:42.
and colleges to do something is I cant wait because it will be | :16:43. | :16:45.
fantastic publicity once it is done. It will be difficult not to laugh | :16:46. | :16:54.
at him going up steep hills. As for raising money, | :16:55. | :16:58.
we are definitely pushing a couple of quid into it if I see | :16:59. | :17:00.
him falling over couple of times. Very much looking forward to seeing | :17:01. | :17:04.
how funnily we walk Rare seabird chicks have bedn | :17:05. | :17:09.
spotted for the first time hn living The Manx Shearwater chicks were born | :17:10. | :17:21.
on St Agnes and Gugh after Now the young birds have bedn filmed | :17:22. | :17:26.
leaving their nest burrows at night to stretch their whngs | :17:27. | :17:31.
and gaze at the stars, which is how Earlier I spoke to Tony Whitehead | :17:32. | :17:34.
from the RSPB to find out more It is fantastic news. It is the | :17:35. | :17:50.
first time in living memory we have had tricks `` chicks from the | :17:51. | :17:55.
boroughs. It follows a wintdr where we have worked hard to read the | :17:56. | :18:00.
islands of the rats. It was the rats, where the or the X? Both. | :18:01. | :18:07.
There were about 3000 rats on the island. It was causing huge problems | :18:08. | :18:12.
because this is one of only two places in England where these birds | :18:13. | :18:17.
nest. It was important to gdt rid of the rats, which were introdtced | :18:18. | :18:20.
anyway and should not have been there and were causing all the | :18:21. | :18:24.
problems with the birds. How good a news is this? Full we haven't seen | :18:25. | :18:30.
rats on the island since December 2013, so that is really good news. | :18:31. | :18:34.
It has almost immediately p`id off. We have seen that Maxine birds | :18:35. | :18:43.
emerging from their burrows `` we have seen birds emerging from their | :18:44. | :18:50.
burrows. Youngsters sitting outside their burrows, waiting to go on | :18:51. | :18:54.
their long journeys. It is lovely. The parents leave before thd | :18:55. | :18:59.
youngsters are ready. They lake sure they are well fed and then the | :19:00. | :19:03.
parents fly off to the southern hemisphere, leaving the checks alone | :19:04. | :19:07.
for a little while. Then thdy emerge from the boroughs, stretch their | :19:08. | :19:11.
wings, they do it at night `nd sit outside the boroughs. To get a fix | :19:12. | :19:16.
on where they are the spent a little time just looking at the skx and the | :19:17. | :19:21.
stars. That helps them positioned themselves. The amazing thing about | :19:22. | :19:26.
these birds is that once thdy leave that burrow they will probably not | :19:27. | :19:31.
return for about two to four years. They come back to exactly the same | :19:32. | :19:38.
burrow. And you can't foresde any other problems? Adi back to stay? We | :19:39. | :19:44.
hope so. We won't be able to declare the island rats flay that Iraq rat | :19:45. | :19:51.
free until 2016 officially. It is quite an intense job. That lac would | :19:52. | :19:58.
be able to declare the island rat free. `` won't be able to ddclare | :19:59. | :20:10.
the island rat three. We ard really making sure that these birds are | :20:11. | :20:14.
held by removing the rats. We did the same on the Isles of Schlly | :20:15. | :20:17.
We've all had that sinking feeling at some point or other when you | :20:18. | :20:20.
Well, one Cornish diver had just that | :20:21. | :20:22.
when she surfaced from a research trip and realised an expenshve | :20:23. | :20:25.
That is, until a group of schoolchildren | :20:26. | :20:29.
Two weeks ago, Kat Wilding was doing a survey dive, capturing pictures of | :20:30. | :20:45.
the underwater world of the Bay for the Cornwall wildlife trust. It was | :20:46. | :20:50.
also the day she led a valu`ble lesson. I put the camera in my | :20:51. | :20:54.
pocket, and I thought I had secured it with the belt Rolaids, bx the | :20:55. | :20:58.
time I reached the surface the camera was gone. It was verx | :20:59. | :21:02.
expensive and very valuable, as well as being the two are work. H had no | :21:03. | :21:09.
expectation of ever seen it again. ?500 worth of camera lost to the | :21:10. | :21:16.
sea. That is, until class three and four of this primary school decided | :21:17. | :21:20.
to do a beach clean as part of their studies. It was about creathvity, so | :21:21. | :21:26.
we went to do a beach clean and we found loads of stuff and were cold | :21:27. | :21:34.
by Mr King, who showed us the underwater camera that Alison Robin | :21:35. | :21:42.
found. We picked up quite a few bags worth of rubbish by that tile and | :21:43. | :21:45.
one of the children picked tp the camera. To be able to turn ht on and | :21:46. | :21:50.
see the pictures are cells `nd what amazing wildlife was in the bay was | :21:51. | :21:54.
incredible. They also found this picture on the camera, so posted a | :21:55. | :22:00.
message to social media sitds. If this is your camera, please contact | :22:01. | :22:05.
our school. Three hours aftdr we had put that out it came back that we | :22:06. | :22:11.
had found the owner of the camera who is... Cat! It didn't just go via | :22:12. | :22:18.
Twitter, but also via Facebook, which is how I came to here about | :22:19. | :22:23.
it. One of arrogant divers was recognised in the photograph and she | :22:24. | :22:27.
contacted me. I was amazed `nd couldn't believe it. It was people | :22:28. | :22:31.
who were doing a beach clean, so working to protect the marine | :22:32. | :22:35.
environment and conservation. They benefited are programmed by | :22:36. | :22:38.
returning the camera to us. It is just fantastic. Some Green | :22:39. | :22:41.
conservation karma. It's that time of year | :22:42. | :22:46.
when we start our search What do all these people have | :22:47. | :22:49.
in common? They're all | :22:50. | :22:58.
BBC South West Unsung Sporthng heroes from previous years `nd now | :22:59. | :23:00.
we want to find their successor So if you know anyone who ghves up | :23:01. | :23:05.
