Three people are being questioned about the murder of a man whose body | :00:00. | :00:10.
was found by the police by chance at his home in Newtownabbey. | :00:11. | :00:14.
Eddie Girvan was 67 and the father of two children. | :00:15. | :00:17.
The police say he had suffered a painful and violence death. | :00:18. | :00:21.
A murder investigation at the home of the pensioner who lived alone | :00:22. | :00:26.
His body was found in the living room. | :00:27. | :00:30.
The victim was on a chair, stabbed in the chest, | :00:31. | :00:32.
The last time he was seen alive was Sunday afternoon | :00:33. | :00:37.
The police are now trying to find out more information | :00:38. | :00:41.
The sequence of events leading to the discovery of the body | :00:42. | :00:53.
last night began during a routine police | :00:54. | :00:54.
We can't get any more details about that operation but we know | :00:55. | :01:00.
that it led police officers to come to Mr Gervin's | :01:01. | :01:05.
home where his body was found | :01:06. | :01:07.
Shortly afterwards, neighbours told the blues that his car | :01:08. | :01:10.
The police came to the house and discovered his body. | :01:11. | :01:15.
The police were conducting enquiries relating to an individual | :01:16. | :01:20.
from Belfast and those enquiries led us to call routinely to the house. | :01:21. | :01:23.
We were unaware at that time that Mr Gervin had been murdered. | :01:24. | :01:33.
The police have now established that Eddie Girvan's car was seen | :01:34. | :01:36.
being driven dangerously along the mortorway between Rathcoole | :01:37. | :01:39.
and Belfast after 7.00am yesterday morning. | :01:40. | :01:42.
It was found at Verner Street in Belfast in the early hours | :01:43. | :01:45.
Tonight, the police were also carrying out investigations here. | :01:46. | :01:51.
Meanwhile, in Greenisland, the community is still trying | :01:52. | :01:53.
to come to terms with murder in it's midst. | :01:54. | :01:57.
This is an area that looks after its elderly. | :01:58. | :01:59.
The like of this has not been seen in this area before. | :02:00. | :02:04.
Tonight, two crime scenes are under investigation as the police | :02:05. | :02:07.
try to find out why Eddie Girvan died and who killed him. | :02:08. | :02:14.
Earlier tonight, our reporter Claire Graham spoke | :02:15. | :02:16.
to the East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson. | :02:17. | :02:18.
Eddie has been known to me for all of my life. And when the primary | :02:19. | :02:32.
school together, he was in the Boys' Brigade with me. I have known him | :02:33. | :02:37.
living here in Greenisland all of that time. Always a very helpful, | :02:38. | :02:41.
friendly person. Someone who would have gone the extra mile to help | :02:42. | :02:46.
people, doing odd jobs. He was always willing when somebody needed | :02:47. | :02:51.
something done in their home, a repair job at something like that. | :02:52. | :02:55.
Eddie was always there to help out. He is someone for whom who I would | :02:56. | :03:01.
have good memories. High is the community today? I know that there | :03:02. | :03:07.
are many people in Greenisland, not only his immediate neighbours after | :03:08. | :03:13.
this incredibly sad and difficult circumstance for people to | :03:14. | :03:18.
understand in the last number of hours, in this community Eddie | :03:19. | :03:23.
Girvan is somebody that will be remembered because of the kind deeds | :03:24. | :03:27.
that he did and the friend that he was to many people. | :03:28. | :03:31.
The Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, has agreed, | :03:32. | :03:33.
in principle, to appear as a witness at an inquest into the death | :03:34. | :03:36.
of an IRA man who was shot dead by the army. | :03:37. | :03:39.
Seamus Bradley was killed in the Creggan in Londonderry | :03:40. | :03:41.
in July 1972, during what was called Operation Motorman. | :03:42. | :03:43.
In another incident on the same day, a 15-year-old schoolboy was also | :03:44. | :03:46.
Seamus Bradley's case is one of 56 that are being reviewed | :03:47. | :03:50.
Our reporter Ita Dungan was in the court. | :03:51. | :03:53.
It was the summer of 1972 and the British Army were moving | :03:54. | :03:56.
The army's mission was to secure what were known as "no-go areas". | :03:57. | :04:07.
By the end of the day two people were dead - | :04:08. | :04:11.
19-year-old Seamus Bradley and 15-year-old Daniel Hegarty. | :04:12. | :04:17.
44 years on, a review into the death of Seamus Bradley took place | :04:18. | :04:21.
Lord Justice Weir is assessing how much more work needs to be done | :04:22. | :04:28.
before a full scale inquest can go ahead. | :04:29. | :04:33.
What is very much part of that jigsaw is what were the IRA in Derry | :04:34. | :04:36.
In order to find out, the Coroner's Office wrote | :04:37. | :04:41.
to Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams. | :04:42. | :04:46.
In 2001, Mr McGuinness told the Bloody Sunday Inquiry | :04:47. | :04:48.
that he was second in command of the IRA in Derry at the time. | :04:49. | :04:57.
What this inquest is trying to find out is whether or not the meeting | :04:58. | :05:00.
took place between members of the British government | :05:01. | :05:02.
They want to know if that meeting took place, what may or may not have | :05:03. | :05:13.
been said and whether or not the IRA is to decide their operations | :05:14. | :05:16.
In response to that request, Martin McGuinness' solicitor | :05:17. | :05:20.
appeared at today's hearing promising Mr McGuinness' full | :05:21. | :05:22.
It will take the form of the statement, and we will decide F | :05:23. | :05:38.
it'll be a witness statement. Do you think it is likely that | :05:39. | :05:41.
Martin McGuinness will appear That is a matter for | :05:42. | :05:43.
the coroner to determine. Certainly Martin McGuinness has made | :05:44. | :05:46.
it clear he will cooperate Giving an update on the MoD's | :05:47. | :05:49.
readiness to proceed with the inquest, the army's legal | :05:50. | :05:52.
representative said the MoD "could not locate any | :05:53. | :05:54.
records of such a meeting." Going on to say they would now | :05:55. | :05:56.
check, "the National Archives to see In response, Lord Justice Weir said, | :05:57. | :05:59.
"We all know there were meetings Gerry Kelly may be asked to give | :06:00. | :06:03.
evidence into the inquest of the killing of Gareth O'Connor, | :06:04. | :06:20.
the dissident Republican, in 2003. His family claimed that Mr Kelly | :06:21. | :06:31.
told them that they that he had spoken to the Provisional IRA | :06:32. | :06:34.
about the killing and was told Family and friends of the teenager | :06:35. | :06:37.
who died in a fire at the weekend gathered at her funeral | :06:38. | :06:41.
in Castlewellan earlier today. 18-year-old Ellen Finnegan lived | :06:42. | :06:44.
in a flat above her father's shop. Castlewellan fell silent to remember | :06:45. | :06:46.
a beloved member of the community. Ellen Finnegan lived | :06:47. | :06:57.
and died in the flat Today, Bartley Finnegan walked | :06:58. | :06:59.
behind his daughter to Requiem Mass at St Malachy's Church, | :07:00. | :07:07.
accompanied by schoolfriends from Assumption Grammar | :07:08. | :07:12.
in Ballynahinch and team mates During the service she was | :07:13. | :07:14.
remembered as bright, vivacious, talented, | :07:15. | :07:19.
full of hope and already making I know how Bartley cherishes | :07:20. | :07:21.
the last conversation he had I believe it is a special | :07:22. | :07:31.
grace for you, Bartley, She wished you a good holiday | :07:32. | :07:44.
and added, "I love you, Afterwards, Ellen was taken | :07:45. | :07:56.
through the town before being laid to rest at the family burial | :07:57. | :08:12.
ground in Aughlisnafin. Belfast City Council has this | :08:13. | :08:22.
evening given planning permission for more than 1,000 student | :08:23. | :08:24.
apartments opposite the Ulster University's new campus | :08:25. | :08:26.
on the northern edge The larger of the projects consists | :08:27. | :08:28.
of nearly 600 en suite bedrooms Our Economics and Business Editor, | :08:29. | :08:34.
John Campbell, was at Belfast City These two developments at graduation | :08:35. | :08:51.
sites on your Street and great Patrick Street just opposite the new | :08:52. | :08:55.
Ulster University campus. They will house more than a thousand students | :08:56. | :08:58.
when completed and they will not be the last of the sorts of | :08:59. | :09:03.
applications to be considered. In fact, there are 11 applications | :09:04. | :09:09.
currently in the system which could give a few thousand student rooms. | :09:10. | :09:13.
Some believe that could lead to oversupply. One developer said that | :09:14. | :09:20.
even if every scheme is approved it would only bring Belfast up to the | :09:21. | :09:24.
standard of other UK university cities. If Belfast went ahead with | :09:25. | :09:31.
all 16 projects and planning at the moment, that would give Belfast 23% | :09:32. | :09:38.
of student accommodation which was managed student accommodation as a | :09:39. | :09:42.
total of the whole student population. It would still be way | :09:43. | :09:46.
behind other UK cities and they don't see Belfast really being any | :09:47. | :09:52.
different than any other UK cities. The new University campus should be | :09:53. | :09:56.
fully operational in 28 team, so developers will want to begin work | :09:57. | :10:00.
shortly. I understand building work to get underway during the summer. | :10:01. | :10:04.
Meanwhile, planning permission has also been granted | :10:05. | :10:06.
for the development of two more hotels in Belfast city centre. | :10:07. | :10:09.
An extension of the Ten Square Hotel on the corner of Linenhall Street | :10:10. | :10:12.
and Donegall Square South will create an additional 46 rooms, | :10:13. | :10:15.
while a 179-bedroom new build hotel in Hope Street has also been given | :10:16. | :10:18.
Garda have identified the man whose body found in a suitcase | :10:19. | :10:25.
in the Grand Canal in County Kildare. | :10:26. | :10:29.
Kenneth O'Brien was 33-years-old and from Clondalkin in West Dublin. | :10:30. | :10:33.
It is believed he went missing on Friday. | :10:34. | :10:38.
The suitcase was spotted in the water by two people walking | :10:39. | :10:40.
along the canal bank near Ardclough Bridge on Saturday. | :10:41. | :10:49.
Kenneth O'Brien was a normal man going about his business, pursuing | :10:50. | :11:00.
his employment, trying to get some work and he has been brutally | :11:01. | :11:01.
murdered. Blackmailers have targeted several | :11:02. | :11:02.
men here who were encouraged to perform sex acts | :11:03. | :11:04.
over the internet. The criminals recorded them | :11:05. | :11:06.
and threatened to publish the videos on social media if the men didn't | :11:07. | :11:08.
pay money into an account in West The police say some | :11:09. | :11:12.
of them paid the money. There's an interview with the police | :11:13. | :11:16.
on Good Morning Ulster on BBC Radio Ulster | :11:17. | :11:18.
just after 8.30am. Football and the Irish Cup holders, | :11:19. | :11:23.
Glentoran, are through to the next round of the competition | :11:24. | :11:26.
after beating Ards 4-1.The night belonged to Glentoran's recent | :11:27. | :11:28.
signing Chris Lavery, who collected the match ball | :11:29. | :11:34.
after scoring a hat-trick in a game In tonight's other Fifth Round tie, | :11:35. | :11:37.
Knockbreda beat Annagh United 5-1. In the Premiership, Ballymena United | :11:38. | :11:45.
beat Carrick Rangers 1-0 and Warrenpoint Town | :11:46. | :11:48.
beat Portadown 2-0. Now, with the weather | :11:49. | :11:53.
forecast, here's Barra Best. It is a largely dry night to come | :11:54. | :12:04.
with a lot of cloud. That cloud will help many places they above | :12:05. | :12:09.
freezing. Whether cloud does break there will be ice and pockets of fog | :12:10. | :12:19.
developing. The fault could be thick in the south. Further north it | :12:20. | :12:23.
should not be too much of a problem. A foggy staff are some of us but | :12:24. | :12:27.
overwrought tomorrow it will be largely dry. Any fog should give | :12:28. | :12:30.
away to clearer conditions through the morning, but before then it | :12:31. | :12:35.
could cause some issues on the road for drivers during the commuter | :12:36. | :12:40.
period. Otherwise, it is not a bad day across Britain and Ireland. | :12:41. | :12:44.
Largely dried, chilly for some parts after a clear sky night, but through | :12:45. | :12:49.
the afternoon many places will enjoy sunshine. Across Ireland, we have | :12:50. | :12:56.
milder air, so temperatures should reach seven or eight degrees. The | :12:57. | :13:03.
wind should be light, but to feel fresh and the County Down coast. | :13:04. | :13:08.
Tomorrow evening, we hold on the clearer skies would will turn chilly | :13:09. | :13:11.
for a while, but overnight in the clearer skies would will turn chilly | :13:12. | :13:14.
for a while, but overnight in the weather stayed the cloud will | :13:15. | :13:18.
thicken up, bringing wet weather, those temperatures above the normal | :13:19. | :13:22.
for the time of year. It will be wetter times over the weekend, but | :13:23. | :13:26.
they they temperatures | :13:27. | :13:28. |
