The police say part of the M1 is likely to remain closed

:00:07.:00:10.

into the night because of a serious crash earlier this evening.

:00:11.:00:15.

It happened between the junctions for Moira and Lurgan.

:00:16.:00:17.

Motorists who have been delayed by the closure have been advised

:00:18.:00:20.

This is the three vehicle collision that emergency services have been

:00:21.:00:34.

dealing with since around 5:30pm this evening. At this stage, police

:00:35.:00:39.

have not released details of any casualties. It happened on the

:00:40.:00:44.

country bound lane of the M1 between Moira and Lurgan, right in the

:00:45.:00:48.

middle of rush hour. One woman told the BBC she had been caught up in

:00:49.:00:53.

the disruption for several hours. Loads of people en masse have just

:00:54.:00:57.

decided to turn their cars and go the wrong way down the hard shoulder

:00:58.:01:03.

and it is scary and pandemonium. People were getting out of their

:01:04.:01:07.

vehicles, people were getting more and more I vote. People had young

:01:08.:01:11.

children in the car, one couple had a young baby that was screaming.

:01:12.:01:16.

Initially, the police only closed the country bound lane but they have

:01:17.:01:19.

since closed both sides of the motorway. Police are warning people

:01:20.:01:25.

delayed by the closure not to leave their vehicles, attempt U-turns or

:01:26.:01:28.

drive up the hard shoulder, for their own safety.

:01:29.:01:30.

A court's heard that Londonderry man Paul McCauley was the victim

:01:31.:01:32.

The 38-year-old died last June, nine years after being assaulted

:01:33.:01:38.

This afternoon, a 28-year-old man appeared in court in the city this

:01:39.:01:44.

Here's our north-west reporter Keiron Tourish.

:01:45.:01:49.

Before the court was Matthew Brian Gillen

:01:50.:01:51.

from Kennedy Place in the Fountain Estate.

:01:52.:01:53.

He's accused of the murder of Paul McCauley in June last year.

:01:54.:01:57.

He's also charged with causing grievous bodily harm and attempted

:01:58.:02:02.

The accused stood in the dock in a grey sweatshirt

:02:03.:02:06.

and replied "yep" when asked if he understood the charges.

:02:07.:02:11.

A detective said he believed he could connect him

:02:12.:02:13.

he described the attack on the civil servant as sectarian.

:02:14.:02:20.

38-year-old Paul McCauley died in June last year in a care facility

:02:21.:02:23.

with his family at his bedside, nine years after he was attacked

:02:24.:02:25.

He was attending a BBQ in Chapel Road in

:02:26.:02:31.

It was organised for a friend going off to work in the Middle East,

:02:32.:02:38.

and was attended by a mixed group of Catholic, Protestant

:02:39.:02:40.

A number of people came out of bushes and attacked the civil

:02:41.:02:44.

After the assault, they made off in the direction of the loyalist

:02:45.:02:50.

The father of one needed constant care after being subjected

:02:51.:02:54.

Part of his skull was crushed when he was stamped on.

:02:55.:02:59.

One man has been charged with his murder -

:03:00.:03:06.

Piper John McClements from the Fountain Estate.

:03:07.:03:09.

He was previously known as Daryl Proctor and changed his

:03:10.:03:11.

name while serving a 13-year sentence for inflicting grievous

:03:12.:03:15.

bodily harm with intent on Paul McCauley during the attack.

:03:16.:03:20.

A detective constable quoted the International Monitoring

:03:21.:03:22.

Commission and said this was an unsanctioned UDA attack.

:03:23.:03:27.

He said Matthew Brian Gillen was still linked to loyalism

:03:28.:03:30.

paramilitarism, or at least was supportive of them,

:03:31.:03:34.

and that was based on items found in house searches.

:03:35.:03:39.

The officer objected to bail and said he could interfere

:03:40.:03:43.

with witnesses, flee the country or obstruct the course of justice.

:03:44.:03:46.

He also said he was the subject of threats from various

:03:47.:03:49.

A defence lawyer said his client was denying the offence.

:03:50.:03:55.

He said he was a person of good character who'd been in employment

:03:56.:03:58.

for ten years and who had no previous convictions.

:03:59.:04:01.

He said the only evidence against him was audio recordings

:04:02.:04:03.

which were in the hands of the PSNI, and there were no steps he could

:04:04.:04:07.

Matthew Brian Gillen was given bail of ?2,000 and ordered

:04:08.:04:13.

He was also told not to leave the jurisdiction and have no contact

:04:14.:04:18.

directly or indirectly with anyone connected with the case.

:04:19.:04:27.

charged with murdering his girlfriend in Lurgan.

:04:28.:04:31.

and from Knocknagore Road in Gilford,

:04:32.:04:35.

denies killing Laura Marshall at her home last weekend.

:04:36.:04:39.

The sink in the bathroom where Laura's body was found

:04:40.:04:44.

The leak attracted the attention of the landlord

:04:45.:05:04.

and led to the discovery of her body.

:05:05.:05:06.

A horrifying description of the scene

:05:07.:05:07.

was given by a detective Sergeant, but it was the boyfriend,

:05:08.:05:10.

Gary O'Dowd, who appeared in court charged with murder.

:05:11.:05:12.

They also revealed that the couple's three-year relationship

:05:13.:05:14.

had featured what he called a catalogue of incidents

:05:15.:05:16.

Applying for ball, a defence lawyer argued that

:05:17.:05:28.

there was no forensic evidence to connect

:05:29.:05:32.

but CCTV of the flat showed no sign of him

:05:33.:05:35.

coming or going at any point and there was no eyewitness.

:05:36.:05:38.

The detective confirmed that during 25 interviews

:05:39.:05:40.

Gary O'Dowd had consistently denied any involvement

:05:41.:05:42.

Bail was refused and Gary O'Dowd will appear again in court

:05:43.:05:46.

Some news Sherston and the police have just confirmed that a woman has

:05:47.:06:00.

died following that crash on the M1. A judge has ruled that

:06:01.:06:03.

a current inquiry into abuse in Northern Ireland is equipped

:06:04.:06:06.

to fully investigate allegations relating to a former children's

:06:07.:06:08.

home in East Belfast. The Government had said

:06:09.:06:10.

that the now-closed Kincora Boys home should remain under the remit

:06:11.:06:13.

of the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry - sitting in Banbridge

:06:14.:06:17.

and not a Westminster inquiry. But campaigners argued

:06:18.:06:22.

that the local inquiry didn't have enough powers to investigate claims

:06:23.:06:25.

against the Intelligence services. Golf and Rory McIlory is currently

:06:26.:06:40.

in joint second place in the Masters tournament in Augusta. He is two

:06:41.:06:44.

shots behind the reigning champion Jordan Spieth.

:06:45.:06:48.

Here is Stephen Watson. It has been a day of patience, control and

:06:49.:06:52.

concentration for Rory McIlory. How pleased are you with the way you

:06:53.:06:57.

performed? I am very pleased. It was around, especially in the

:06:58.:07:01.

conditions, that could have got away from me, especially making a bogey

:07:02.:07:05.

on 11th and dropping back to 2-over for the day at that point, so to

:07:06.:07:10.

play the last six or seven holes in 3-under par is really pleasing and

:07:11.:07:16.

it felt like on the way in, it was playing tough and I am really happy

:07:17.:07:20.

with the day's work and in a great position. It was a day to be

:07:21.:07:23.

mentally tough and resilient was absolutely key. It was, it was one

:07:24.:07:29.

of those days where you couldn't let a bad break it to you, you just

:07:30.:07:33.

needed to focus on the next shot in hand. I feel like I did that very

:07:34.:07:36.

well and have done that very well over the last couple of days. I know

:07:37.:07:40.

conditions will be similar tomorrow so I am going to have to do it

:07:41.:07:44.

again. And you have put yourself right where you want to be going

:07:45.:07:48.

into the weekend. A big performance expected from you, I am sure. You

:07:49.:07:53.

know, it is great to be in this position. It has been a few years

:07:54.:07:57.

since I have been in this position at the Masters, to have a real

:07:58.:08:00.

chance going into the weekend, so I am happy with where I am at. I feel

:08:01.:08:05.

like I have prepared as well as I could and feel like I have gotten to

:08:06.:08:08.

know how this golf course plays with this wind over the next couple of

:08:09.:08:10.

days, so looking forward to playing some good golf at least tomorrow in

:08:11.:08:15.

breezy conditions again and set myself up for a big Sunday. Thanks

:08:16.:08:21.

very much, play well tomorrow, Rory McIlory, right in contention as he

:08:22.:08:22.

goes for the Grand Slam. And in football, Derry City

:08:23.:08:23.

are top of the Premier Division after a 3-0 home win

:08:24.:08:26.

over Shamrock Rovers. Now finally onto the weekend weather

:08:27.:08:28.

forecast with Geoff Maskell. Hello, good evening. Stand-by for

:08:29.:08:38.

what is going to be quite chilly night. Plenty of rain through the

:08:39.:08:42.

day today and as that moves off to the east, we are into a much colder

:08:43.:08:47.

zone of air. It means in some rural areas, we could see temperatures as

:08:48.:08:52.

low as minus four. So a busy night for the road surface with the

:08:53.:08:55.

critters out and had the chance of icy patches on untreated roads. This

:08:56.:09:00.

time of year, the sun gets a reasonably early so any of those icy

:09:01.:09:04.

patches should burn back quite quickly, but despite the chilly

:09:05.:09:07.

start, it is going to be quite a decent morning. Some spells of dry

:09:08.:09:11.

and bright weather through the morning, temperatures up to maybe 7

:09:12.:09:15.

degrees so feeling quite pleasant in the sunshine. This is the front that

:09:16.:09:19.

brought us all the rain today, it has pushed off into the North Sea

:09:20.:09:23.

and behind it, into those cooler temperatures and it means wintry

:09:24.:09:27.

showers over the North Wales coast and increasingly, that is going to

:09:28.:09:30.

be the case over Northern Ireland through the afternoon on Saturday.

:09:31.:09:34.

Any other showers have the potential to be wintry in nature, the chance

:09:35.:09:37.

of a little bit of hail and thunder in the mix as well. As we head into

:09:38.:09:42.

the second half of the weekend, well, we keep that chilly theme, but

:09:43.:09:46.

what you will notice as we go through the day is the breeze starts

:09:47.:09:50.

to pick up. So while the air temperature might be a little bit

:09:51.:09:54.

warmer than Saturday, as that breeze picks up, it won't necessarily feel

:09:55.:10:00.

any warmer. So as we head into the weekend, largely dry, not the worst

:10:01.:10:03.

forecast we have ever had but it is going to be a little bit on the

:10:04.:10:07.

chilly side. And that is it, good night.

:10:08.:10:08.
