Good evening. This is BBC Newsline. | :00:14. | :00:15.
These are the headlines this Wednesday evening... | :00:16. | :00:19.
A Royal Marine from Larne arrested over dissident republican | :00:20. | :00:21.
activity can be questioned for an extra seven days. | :00:22. | :00:30.
The US firm Caterpillar is set to make a workforce announcement | :00:31. | :00:34.
tomorrow amid fears of heavy job losses. | :00:35. | :00:36.
The latest on Apple's tax arrangements in the Republic. | :00:37. | :00:39.
We're live in Dublin where the Cabinet has been meeting. | :00:40. | :00:41.
A man whose daughter has autism calls for changes to how | :00:42. | :00:44.
I think that is the problem with girls versus boys, they do that with | :00:45. | :00:57.
the attitude against girls. More people are coming to 11 | :00:58. | :01:02.
Northern Ireland, fewer are leaving, and the population heading towards 2 | :01:03. | :01:11.
million. -- coming to live in Northern Ireland. | :01:12. | :01:12.
He wanted to stay, but Ruan Piennar is leaving Ulster Rugby. | :01:13. | :01:15.
BBC Newsline is live with the Ulster branch chief executive Shane Logan. | :01:16. | :01:18.
And as we move into the new month, the new season brings a much more | :01:19. | :01:21.
Those stories in a moment, but first, there has been a major fire | :01:22. | :01:34.
at a waste recycling firm in West Belfast. Katherine Morrison is at | :01:35. | :01:37.
the scene and has sent this report in the last few minutes full is this | :01:38. | :01:47.
facility was on fire and it was reported just after the afternoon. | :01:48. | :01:52.
It is not clear how the fire started, but there is a quantity of | :01:53. | :01:57.
waste on fire, or omitting a huge amount of black smoke, which you can | :01:58. | :02:03.
probably see across the city. There are seven fire appliances battling | :02:04. | :02:08.
the blaze, with more arriving every moment, and the fire incident | :02:09. | :02:12.
Commander Rice book to just a short time ago said this could go on for | :02:13. | :02:18.
some time. -- the fire incident commander that I spoke to. | :02:19. | :02:21.
Detectives have been given another week to question Ciaran Maxwell, | :02:22. | :02:24.
the Royal Marine arrested as part of an investigation into dissident | :02:25. | :02:26.
Police teams returned to a forest park near Larne where bomb making | :02:27. | :02:40.
equipment was discovered earlier this year. | :02:41. | :02:41.
He was arrested last week in Somerset by police investigating | :02:42. | :02:49.
dissident terrorism. I request was approved from police to question him | :02:50. | :02:56.
for a further seven days. The arrest of Ciaran Maxwell is connected with | :02:57. | :03:03.
the discovery of two arms dumps in County Antrim... | :03:04. | :03:10.
It was an matchup this year that equipment was fined here, including | :03:11. | :03:16.
circuit boards and the quantity of explosives. Then this morning | :03:17. | :03:19.
forensic teams returned and have spent the day carrying out extensive | :03:20. | :03:25.
and detailed searches of the woodland just behind me. Police have | :03:26. | :03:31.
carried out a number of searches in Larne since Ciaran Maxwell was | :03:32. | :03:37.
arrested. This road was against the focus since today and has been since | :03:38. | :03:43.
Sunday, local politicians appealing for the public's patients. The | :03:44. | :03:46.
police have the job to do and we have to stand back and allowed them | :03:47. | :03:52.
to do that job. Hopefully all will become clear soon. Detectives from | :03:53. | :03:57.
the PSNI have also been given an extra five days to question a | :03:58. | :04:02.
27-year-old man arrested in Larne on Monday in the leash and to dissident | :04:03. | :04:07.
republican activity. -- in relation to. | :04:08. | :04:10.
There's plenty to come on the programme before seven. | :04:11. | :04:12.
We'll hear from the Children's Commissioner, who's concerned | :04:13. | :04:14.
at suicide and self harm rates among young people. | :04:15. | :04:23.
Almost 2,000 workers face an anxious 24 hours as the American firm | :04:24. | :04:26.
Caterpillar prepares to make an announcement about jobs tomorrow. | :04:27. | :04:31.
The company, which makes heavy machinery, has been shedding jobs | :04:32. | :04:38.
That's where our business correspondent Julian O'Neill is. | :04:39. | :04:43.
1900 workers on tenterhooks this evening, not knowing by this time | :04:44. | :04:57.
tomorrow night just how many will still be in a job. The nature at | :04:58. | :05:02.
those factories has been cancelled this evening, just as it was last | :05:03. | :05:07.
night, in order to allow as many workers as possible to attend | :05:08. | :05:11.
lunchtime briefing at 2pm tomorrow at each of the factories. It is at | :05:12. | :05:17.
that time they will be given what news, delivered from the United | :05:18. | :05:21.
States I understand, and after a low some time off to absorb that news. | :05:22. | :05:26.
That is never a good saying, normally meaning significant job | :05:27. | :05:32.
losses. But to be clear, we do not have numbers this evening. | :05:33. | :05:35.
To what extent would job losses have been expected? | :05:36. | :05:39.
It is not something that will have come out of the blue. This is an | :05:40. | :05:46.
American global company that has shed 14,000 jobs across the world in | :05:47. | :05:50.
the last year alone and recently made an announcement that there | :05:51. | :05:54.
would be more job losses to follow and we may see evidence of that | :05:55. | :05:59.
tomorrow. It is a heavy machinery maker and has been greatly impacted | :06:00. | :06:05.
by global business dip in trade in sectors like mining, energy and | :06:06. | :06:09.
construction, quite simply the demand for its products is not as | :06:10. | :06:14.
great as it was, which is what is behind this announcement tomorrow. | :06:15. | :06:18.
Clearly an anxious 24 hours ahead. For now, thank you. | :06:19. | :06:22.
The airline Jet2 says it will create up to 50 new jobs in Belfast. | :06:23. | :06:25.
It's part of a UK-wide recruitment drive looking for 1,000 new staff | :06:26. | :06:28.
to fill pilot, cabin crew and engineering positions. | :06:29. | :06:31.
Jet 2 currently flies to 17 destinations from | :06:32. | :06:35.
The Republic's Cabinet today met to discuss their response | :06:36. | :06:48.
to Europe's decision to impose a 13 billion euro tax bill | :06:49. | :06:50.
Enda Kenny's Fine Gael wants to appeal the ruling, but so far, | :06:51. | :06:54.
hasn't got the support of independent ministers. | :06:55. | :06:56.
Shane Harrison, has been following the discussions. | :06:57. | :07:02.
The Camelon meeting has been adjourned until 11 o'clock on Friday | :07:03. | :07:16.
morning. -- Cabinet meeting. This is a minority led government led by | :07:17. | :07:21.
Fine Gael, including independent ministers of various dance, but | :07:22. | :07:26.
dependent on the support for its survival on the Gayle. They want to | :07:27. | :07:36.
appeal the ruling on Apple for clarity and scrutiny. It is asking | :07:37. | :07:42.
who is right, Dublin or Brussels, as to whether they had secretly | :07:43. | :07:46.
colluded with Apple for a sweetheart deal to avoid being taxed. But to | :07:47. | :07:53.
turn your back on 13 billion euros, 25% of the money raised here in | :07:54. | :07:58.
taxation, is a huge question. Many of The Independent ministers want | :07:59. | :08:03.
more time to consult with outside experts. It seems they also want the | :08:04. | :08:09.
parliament to be recalled, due back in two weeks' time, and the house to | :08:10. | :08:14.
make a strong statement on taxation and that appears to be the prize for | :08:15. | :08:16.
agreeing to a new deal. There's been a question | :08:17. | :08:19.
mark over how long this What impact you think this will have | :08:20. | :08:31.
on its stability? Relations between The Independent Alliance and some | :08:32. | :08:38.
Fine Gael backbenchers is not good. Some have supported a Private | :08:39. | :08:43.
members on abortion which the Attorney General called | :08:44. | :08:46.
unconstitutional. It is too early to talk about a political crisis at | :08:47. | :08:50.
least until we see the results of the resume political meeting on | :08:51. | :08:54.
Friday but the political temperature has risen. One final point, despite | :08:55. | :09:02.
the last two days of Eddie Braben publicity -- of very bad publicity | :09:03. | :09:08.
for Apple, even as we speak, the share price for Apple is up by about | :09:09. | :09:12.
4%. Shane Harrison in Dublin, thank you. | :09:13. | :09:16.
A man accused of raping a 16-year-old boy in West Belfast | :09:17. | :09:19.
last month has been refused bail at the High Court. | :09:20. | :09:21.
39-year-old Gerard Scannell from Ballymurphy Road in the city | :09:22. | :09:23.
He's accused of carrying out the attack in the Falls Park area | :09:24. | :09:27.
A defence lawyer challenged the strength of the case insisting | :09:28. | :09:32.
that no DNA evidence had yet been established. | :09:33. | :09:34.
The judge denied bail on the grounds that Scannell could flee. | :09:35. | :09:39.
The funeral for five members of the same family who died | :09:40. | :09:42.
in an apparent murder-suicide in County Cavan is to | :09:43. | :09:44.
The bodies of Clodagh and Alan Hawe, along with their three sons | :09:45. | :09:52.
Liam, Niall and Ryan, were discovered in their home | :09:53. | :09:54.
12 people have been treated in hospital in the Republic | :09:55. | :10:03.
after a transatlantic flight was hit by severe turbulence. | :10:04. | :10:06.
The United Airlines Boeing 767, en route from Houston to London, | :10:07. | :10:09.
had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport. | :10:10. | :10:11.
Nine adults and three children suffered minor head | :10:12. | :10:13.
11 of those have since been discharged. | :10:14. | :10:20.
Coming up later on the programme this evening... | :10:21. | :10:26.
Join me in Dublin we are tonight marks the end of the glittering | :10:27. | :10:34.
international career for the Republic of Ireland's record | :10:35. | :10:34.
goal-scorer Robbie Keane. A man whose daughter has autism says | :10:35. | :10:39.
not enough is being done to ensure The National Autistic Society has | :10:40. | :10:42.
called for doctors to have a better understanding of how the condition | :10:43. | :10:48.
affects different genders. Peter Nixon noticed his | :10:49. | :10:54.
seven-year-old daughter Ellie was not progressing | :10:55. | :10:56.
as quickly as expected Speaking to our reporter | :10:57. | :10:59.
Teresa Craig, he recalled Meet Ellie, like any other | :11:00. | :11:19.
seven-year-old, she loves to play but as a baby her father noticed | :11:20. | :11:22.
something different about her behaviour. When she was six, seven, | :11:23. | :11:30.
eight months, she was not engaging in the week my niece was who was a | :11:31. | :11:34.
few months younger. Your child laughing back at you, or just | :11:35. | :11:40.
looking at one specific spot on your body, or some years else. Within 21 | :11:41. | :11:45.
months of looking for help, Ellie was diagnosed with autism. Can you | :11:46. | :11:52.
count to seven? While for family believe the age of three was | :11:53. | :11:56.
relatively quick when compared with other cases be recognised the | :11:57. | :12:00.
difficulty with coming to terms with the condition. The problem with | :12:01. | :12:04.
girls versus boys is they do that, with the attitude with girls, they | :12:05. | :12:10.
are under Reza host, trying to do whatever they can, but once you have | :12:11. | :12:14.
that diagnosis you wonder what you will do. -- they are under | :12:15. | :12:19.
resourced. Peter believes that early diagnosis is crucial but the | :12:20. | :12:24.
National Autistic Society says that scientists are missing autism in | :12:25. | :12:29.
some boys and girls because females can be bettered at masking them. | :12:30. | :12:33.
Girls can go through not understanding why they are | :12:34. | :12:37.
different, leading to other secondary problems, such as anxiety, | :12:38. | :12:44.
depression and eating good orders -- eating disorders. The National | :12:45. | :12:48.
Autistic Society says that better trading will help with earlier | :12:49. | :12:52.
diagnosis, allowing for better support for girls and women with the | :12:53. | :12:57.
condition. I love Ellie and the fact that autism makes a difference from | :12:58. | :13:01.
other children. The bond that we have is absolutely amazing. While | :13:02. | :13:08.
there have been challenges for the family, there is no doubt of the | :13:09. | :13:09.
bond between them. The number of suicides | :13:10. | :13:11.
in Northern Ireland has increased by 19%, according | :13:12. | :13:13.
to the latest statistics. Figures released by the Registrar | :13:14. | :13:17.
General Annual Report show that registered suicides increased | :13:18. | :13:20.
from 268 to 318 Of these deaths, 50 were young | :13:21. | :13:22.
people aged between The rising number of suicides | :13:23. | :13:30.
is in line with an increase in the number of young people | :13:31. | :13:37.
presenting at A due to self harm. The Commissioner for Children | :13:38. | :13:47.
and Young People in Northern Ireland It is never easy reading, what is | :13:48. | :13:59.
being done for young people feeling vulnerable, suicidal and attempting | :14:00. | :14:04.
self harm? There are many services. What we need to see is better | :14:05. | :14:10.
coordination of services, I help line, community-based services, and | :14:11. | :14:15.
also health service crisis intervention services. The concern | :14:16. | :14:20.
is that is not enough being done and not enough investment, because | :14:21. | :14:23.
Beano, behind each one of those statistics 50 young people, that is | :14:24. | :14:31.
a tragedy. -- because we know. Our family left devastated, and we need | :14:32. | :14:35.
to look behind the statistics and how we could have got in early and | :14:36. | :14:39.
we have massive underinvestment in Northern Ireland in mental health | :14:40. | :14:44.
services which needs addressed. With that well-being strategy or | :14:45. | :14:50.
programme, what do you see as a priority? One of the first thing | :14:51. | :14:55.
they have to do is understand what is not helping young people. We have | :14:56. | :14:59.
estimates going back ten years which say 25% there is higher prevalence | :15:00. | :15:06.
of mental health problems in Northern Ireland, which has to be | :15:07. | :15:09.
connected with the conflict we have had and we know if the parent or | :15:10. | :15:13.
grandparent has been traumatised, that will impact on the child and | :15:14. | :15:18.
grandchildren, unless there is intervention. But we don't know | :15:19. | :15:22.
enough. There are a lot of things we don't know about our children and | :15:23. | :15:27.
their mental health. How can we find that out? We need research, we need | :15:28. | :15:32.
the government to be clear about who these children are at what affects | :15:33. | :15:36.
them so that services invested in the services we know will likely | :15:37. | :15:42.
have the best outcome. And I am not convinced our government can say | :15:43. | :15:47.
that every penny spent on child and adolescent mental health is yielding | :15:48. | :15:50.
the results wanted. I think there is a will and I am looking to working | :15:51. | :15:57.
with the Minister for health and executive generally to improve the | :15:58. | :16:01.
mental health of young people. Money isn't always available and they know | :16:02. | :16:05.
that people doing great work on the front line that it is not always | :16:06. | :16:10.
about money. What extra help do they need to target and to reach those | :16:11. | :16:17.
young people who are self harming or who are suicidal? What young people | :16:18. | :16:20.
are saying, and this is the number one issue, which is why it is my | :16:21. | :16:24.
priority as the Minister, they want someone to listen to them, not to | :16:25. | :16:27.
dismiss them and see things like you will grow out of it, it is just your | :16:28. | :16:32.
age, there is always someone worse off. We all know, when we go through | :16:33. | :16:38.
a crisis, it doesn't matter if someone is worse off, we are going | :16:39. | :16:44.
through a crisis, so we need somebody who sports a young person | :16:45. | :16:48.
struggling or a family to know we they can get support. And for those | :16:49. | :16:51.
services to be properly resourced to meet the needs coming to the door. | :16:52. | :16:56.
How shocking do you see in that figure 15 years of age. How can | :16:57. | :17:03.
anyone looked at... That is reported? That is a child. That is a | :17:04. | :17:12.
family, parents and friends and school friends who have been left | :17:13. | :17:15.
devastated. Thank you for joining us. | :17:16. | :17:18.
Some other statistics that have grabbed attention today concern | :17:19. | :17:20.
It is estimated to reach two million within 20 years. | :17:21. | :17:28.
The figures are in the annual survey by the Statistics and | :17:29. | :17:31.
Research Agency and BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson | :17:32. | :17:33.
It may not be perfect, but Northern Ireland | :17:34. | :17:36.
The current population is estimated at 1.85 million - and it's growing. | :17:37. | :17:49.
Indeed, if current trends continue, it'll be | :17:50. | :17:50.
There's a natural growth here - the birth-rate is much higher | :17:51. | :17:55.
than the death rate - and more people want to come | :17:56. | :17:57.
In total, 23,600 people came to live in Northern Ireland in the year | :17:58. | :18:06.
34% came from England, 8% from Scotland and 8% from Poland. | :18:07. | :18:15.
But the part of Northern Ireland which experienced | :18:16. | :18:30.
in the past year was in the Lisburn and Castlereagh council area. | :18:31. | :18:34.
The lowest was in Derry City and Strabane. | :18:35. | :18:37.
At the same time, only 21,500 people left here. | :18:38. | :18:39.
That's the lowest number for almost 10 years. | :18:40. | :18:43.
Well, there were more than 24,000 births during the year - | :18:44. | :18:48.
Almost half the total number of babies - 44% - | :18:49. | :18:53.
The number of births to teenage mothers was down to 760. | :18:54. | :19:01.
Ten years ago, it was almost twice that number. | :19:02. | :19:04.
In terms of marriages, there's been no real change | :19:05. | :19:08.
in the marriage-rate in the past decade, but the most recent figures | :19:09. | :19:12.
suggest the most popular day of the year for a wedding. | :19:13. | :19:16.
It's the first Saturday in September. | :19:17. | :19:18.
We certainly do! Moving to sport now. | :19:19. | :19:32.
Ulster Rugby says it wanted one of its star players | :19:33. | :19:34.
Ruan Pienaar to stay, but the South African | :19:35. | :19:36.
is set to leave Belfast at the end of this season. | :19:37. | :19:40.
Good evening. Yes, the news that Ruan Pienaar is leaving has rocked | :19:41. | :19:58.
Ulster Rugby fans, attempts to make the IRFU increase the contract has | :19:59. | :20:05.
not worked. Shane Logan, what happened and what can you tell us? | :20:06. | :20:12.
This has rocked France. He is one of the greatest players, arguably over | :20:13. | :20:21.
the last seven years. But that is a Irish national succession policy and | :20:22. | :20:24.
to be able to keep him for as long as we have been able to goes against | :20:25. | :20:30.
that policy, so the IRFU are to make the difficult decision, one we | :20:31. | :20:35.
struggled with for some time, but we have to respect the difficult | :20:36. | :20:39.
decision that Ruan would not be allowed to renew his contract, even | :20:40. | :20:47.
though he wanted to. There have been reports that they have supported the | :20:48. | :20:53.
massive contribution made by him, but they have to support and grow | :20:54. | :20:56.
local talent, do you have sympathy with that? We have to promote rugby | :20:57. | :21:03.
in Ireland, we have the best national side, we are joined in | :21:04. | :21:07.
wanting the provinces to be the absolute best, in our case Ulster, | :21:08. | :21:13.
which can cause conflict. But the IRFU have recently around us to sign | :21:14. | :21:19.
short-term someone from Georgia. We have to make the best of next season | :21:20. | :21:25.
but Ruan. That we do the best to deliver during his time here. But | :21:26. | :21:30.
that is no way back? It is done and dusted, Ruan will be leaving? That | :21:31. | :21:36.
is correct, but we now spend four times at the academy than we did, | :21:37. | :21:41.
cracking players coming through, one of class players, and only meant -- | :21:42. | :21:51.
the aim is to perform. Ulster Rugby, the GAA and the GAA is combining two | :21:52. | :22:00.
support volunteerism? -- ITFU and GAA. Without volunteers, we cannot | :22:01. | :22:07.
promote participation and promote the top end of our sport, so it is | :22:08. | :22:12.
vital, volunteers are the lifeblood and we want to encourage the ward | :22:13. | :22:17.
and build on the success that all three sports have had so far. We | :22:18. | :22:21.
appreciate you joining us. Thank you. I know you have an event to | :22:22. | :22:25.
attend. And by anyone's standards, it was a | :22:26. | :22:29.
giant-killing. Annagh United bottom of championship | :22:30. | :22:31.
one dumped Glentoran out of the League Cup last night, | :22:32. | :22:33.
claiming the first high profile managerial casualty | :22:34. | :22:37.
of the new season as Glens manager Today, the club's main sponsor | :22:38. | :22:39.
and one of its goal scorers Well, last night, in a squad of 14 | :22:40. | :22:57.
men, I think there were only 14 peers over the age of 20 or 21. The | :22:58. | :23:05.
fear nothing. On and off, it is absolutely brilliant. One of the | :23:06. | :23:11.
best starts in the league. Great on and off the pitch. I would like to | :23:12. | :23:16.
thank Glentoran fans who turned out in them numbers last night. It is a | :23:17. | :23:22.
big boost for the club. Winning the game like this should drive us on. | :23:23. | :23:29.
They are a big team. Bringing us to Saturday, it will be fine. | :23:30. | :23:32.
Well done to them. After 18 years in the Republic | :23:33. | :23:34.
of Ireland shirt, it's farewell Martin Oneill's men play Oman | :23:35. | :23:46.
in a friendly international and there for BBC Newsline | :23:47. | :23:49.
is Stephen Watson It is set to be a special night for | :23:50. | :23:56.
Robbie Keane, as he says farewell to the thousands of adoring Republic of | :23:57. | :24:01.
Ireland fans, pulling down the car on a glittering international | :24:02. | :24:05.
career. The 36 you'll will play his last game for the Republic of | :24:06. | :24:09.
Ireland in this friendly in Dublin against Oman. He is the country's | :24:10. | :24:14.
record goal scorer, currently playing for early Galaxy in America. | :24:15. | :24:25.
He says that playing for the national team as B has always most | :24:26. | :24:29.
at home. It has definitely been emotional. -- is weird he has always | :24:30. | :24:36.
been most at home. It has been surreal, to be honest | :24:37. | :24:41.
with you, and I have dreaded this day for a long time, but it has come | :24:42. | :24:45.
to this, at the moment where I think it is the right time for me. I have | :24:46. | :24:51.
certainly had mixed emotions about it. It has been an absolutely | :24:52. | :24:54.
wonderful journey, I have enjoyed every moment. To the fans, and | :24:55. | :25:01.
everyone that has been very supportive to me or put the 18 years | :25:02. | :25:06.
I have had, it has been an incredible journey, something I will | :25:07. | :25:09.
never forget. He has scored 67 goals in 145 | :25:10. | :25:14.
appearances for the Republic of Ireland. One more and he would equal | :25:15. | :25:23.
the record set by the great German striker Mueller. But he says he is | :25:24. | :25:27.
just chasing whatever record this next but it would be a fitting end | :25:28. | :25:32.
to what has been a remarkable career, kick-off at the Aviva | :25:33. | :25:36.
Stadium is 7.40 five. And Stephen will have the latest at | :25:37. | :25:43.

Before we depart this evening, the weather forecast. | :25:48. | :25:52.
Not too bad today, then August than in dust and dusted, and the chart | :25:53. | :26:03.
for Saturday is not pretty, not for a wedding, low pressure bringing | :26:04. | :26:08.
heavy rain and strong wind. Sunday looks better with the ridge of high | :26:09. | :26:14.
pressure but only for a while, as there could be some more heavy rain | :26:15. | :26:23.
to come. This is tied in with this ex-Harry Kane, which could influence | :26:24. | :26:26.
the weather by the end of the weekend. -- this ex-hurrican. | :26:27. | :26:37.
Tomorrow, the 1st of September, you should get away with a dry start | :26:38. | :26:41.
your day. If you are heading back to work or school before the rain | :26:42. | :26:47.
arrives in the morning. And before the rain, there should be some | :26:48. | :26:52.
sunshine. Not too bad a start to the morning, temperatures around 13 or | :26:53. | :26:57.
14 degrees. Some breeze from the south. But thicker cloud in the | :26:58. | :27:02.
afternoon, and the rain starts to come in during the second half of | :27:03. | :27:06.
the morning and it moves eastwards, most places raining by lunchtime, | :27:07. | :27:11.
but not wall-to-wall sunshine, some gaps and it could brighten up | :27:12. | :27:15.
briefly across Belfast and the South East. Tomorrow evening, the rain | :27:16. | :27:20.
moves away and the second half of the night dries up and stays mild. | :27:21. | :27:26.
Friday not too bad, some showers but also sunshine and temperatures not | :27:27. | :27:30.
too bad for early September. Today few have plans for the weekend, | :27:31. | :27:35.
especially on Saturday, stay tuned to the forecast as the detail could | :27:36. | :27:43.
change. Saturday looks quite wet. And that was BBC Newsline. | :27:44. | :27:44. |
