A Royal Marine from Larne has been arrested in England as part

of an investigation into dissident republican activity.

He was detained in Somerset by counter-terrorism officers

It's believed two houses belonging to family members have

At the heart of this investigation is the discovery of weapons linked

to dissident republicans earlier this year and Larne, however it is a

loyalist marine who is being questioned tonight. He is currently

serving in the West Country and is being questioned there. What

followed was a day of searches here in Larne and south Devon.

Police officers are searching but have not yet said what they are

looking for. It is known that it is connected with dissident republican

terrorism. He was arrested at 12:20pm by

counterterrorism officers. Who were joined by police. He was arrested on

suspicion of being caught under -- involved in preparing terrorism

acts. Full is the one mile away, more

searches. It has come as a shock to locals not used to such sites. At

the same time, a significant operation was under way and Larne.

Old Glenarm Road was the focus of investigations. Today's arrest is

the culmination of months of planning following the discovery of

two arms dumps. First a significant terrorist hide of bomb-making

equipment in Carnfunnock Country Park. Then antipersonnel mines and

rockets discovered near Capanagh Forest.

This was a counterterrorism investigation that followed those

two fines. -- discoveries. It is clear the searches were

organised and coordinated. Yes, if you look at the sequence of

events. The searches began immediately after Ciaran Maxwel was

arrested. I watched forensic officers remove a number of items

for investigation. It is clear that court nation was involved due to the

number of forces involved. Because that goes back to arms discoveries

from earlier this year it is clear there were months of discoveries.

The counterterrorism command, the Southwest intelligence unit and

Northern Irish police force all involved.

Has anything more been said about the arrest?

They have not even confirmed that a marine was arrested. They say they

are aware of an arrest under the terrorism act. They will assist this

investigation fully and see it will be inappropriate to say anything

else because it is an ongoing investigation.
