The results of the local eldctions from us. Now | :00:10. | :00:11.
The results of the local eldctions have delivered plenty of surprises. | :00:12. | :00:15.
The votes were counted overnight and today. In places, the two coalition | :00:16. | :00:19.
parties bucked the national trend by winning seats. But elsewherd the | :00:20. | :00:22.
Liberal Democrats lost out `nd smaller parties made gains. Here's | :00:23. | :00:31.
our political editor Paul B`rltrop. When you've been in governmdnt four | :00:32. | :00:35.
years you don't expect this. In Swindon the Conservatives increased | :00:36. | :00:38.
their small majority, boosthng the survival chances of the town's two | :00:39. | :00:43.
Tory MPs. UKIP won lots of votes, though no seats. Inverleith both. | :00:44. | :00:51.
I've been coming here 14 ye`rs and this is the best night we'vd had. | :00:52. | :00:55.
We've racked up record wins and gained seat from Labour. We won by | :00:56. | :01:05.
over 300 votes. UKIP won lots of votes so no seats. Labour wdre | :01:06. | :01:08.
stunned to go backwards. It was generally a plague on all | :01:09. | :01:15.
your houses. We had policies on green waste and they went down well | :01:16. | :01:20.
with voters but the mood of the nation is one of dissatisfaction | :01:21. | :01:26.
with politics. For the other coalition party, Cheltenham was the | :01:27. | :01:30.
saving grace. The Liberal Ddmocrats strengthened their grip on the | :01:31. | :01:35.
Council. What happened here illustrates how | :01:36. | :01:40.
complex the local elections were. No doubt who the losers were. @s for | :01:41. | :01:47.
the winners, labour, the Grdens and the Conservatives all meet games | :01:48. | :01:51.
while the UKIP is picked up their first seat. Bristol saw the West's | :01:52. | :01:53.
biggest changes and bitterest exchanges. The city's polithcs is | :01:54. | :02:00.
now more polarised. I'm proud to be representing the | :02:01. | :02:07.
ward that so overwhelmingly rejected the politics of race is man Tom | :02:08. | :02:11.
phobia and embraced instead a candidate who gave a dam about them. | :02:12. | :02:16.
We are taking seats all across the country this evening and we've put | :02:17. | :02:25.
up with a lot of bad press... We didn't actually tell a lot of lies | :02:26. | :02:29.
and produce leaflets but thdre we go. UKIP is here to stay. | :02:30. | :02:35.
Celebrating over tea and cakes this afternoon, Bristol's Greens. They | :02:36. | :02:42.
got more votes and seats th`n ever. People are voting Green bec`use they | :02:43. | :02:46.
look at our policies and sed we ve got good ideas about how politics | :02:47. | :02:51.
should go. We want to changd politics and talk about the real | :02:52. | :02:58.
long`term issues. We need to look at our economy and manage its | :02:59. | :03:00.
differently for the future. No councils changed hands. | :03:01. | :03:03.
In Gloucester the Tories held their own, while in Stroud Labour advanced | :03:04. | :03:07.
a little. All parties are now trying to work out what it means for next | :03:08. | :03:12.
year's general election. There's more anlysis on the BBC s | :03:13. | :03:15.
Website and we'll have more of course on the Sunday Politics at | :03:16. | :03:26.
11.00am. Authorities both sides of the | :03:27. | :03:29.
Atlantic say they will stop searching for the four yachtsmen | :03:30. | :03:32.
missing in the Atlantic this weekend. A US helicopter fotnd the | :03:33. | :03:43.
hell of the boat when thous`nd miles off the coast of Massachusetts. | :03:44. | :03:50.
There is still no sign of the men. The Foreign Office says the US Coast | :03:51. | :03:53.
Guard intends to call off its search tomorrow morning. | :03:54. | :03:59.
Swindon's troubled car factory lost another 450 workers today. Honda is | :04:00. | :04:06.
struggling to sell its cars in Europe and has made big cuts. One | :04:07. | :04:10.
production line has been mothballed and the total workforce has fallen | :04:11. | :04:13.
from 5,000 before the recession to just 3,000 today. To help pdople | :04:14. | :04:16.
find new work, a special jobs fair was held this morning, and our | :04:17. | :04:19.
business correspondent Dave Harvey went along. | :04:20. | :04:22.
This is a jobs fair with a difference. You have to havd been | :04:23. | :04:25.
laid off by Honda to qualifx this morning and look at the crowds here. | :04:26. | :04:29.
456 people do qualify. That's how many people have left the Swindon | :04:30. | :04:32.
car plant today. There are 07 companies here recruiting. The Army | :04:33. | :04:36.
is recruiting engineers. Evdn Honda is recruiting for one of its own | :04:37. | :04:38.
subsidiary firms. People who work for Honda are always | :04:39. | :04:42.
seen as a premium and that hs because Honda have exceptionally | :04:43. | :04:44.
high standards in terms of employability, work ethic, | :04:45. | :04:45.
punctuality. Plenty of positivity here btt there | :04:46. | :04:48.
were fewer volunteers this time around, in fact some 100 people have | :04:49. | :04:52.
left jobs at Honda against their wishes. The unions tell me that | :04:53. | :05:04.
number could have been reduced. More people could have been kept on but | :05:05. | :05:07.
Honda decided instead to go with contractors rather than its own | :05:08. | :05:09.
staff. Honda are keeping those contract | :05:10. | :05:12.
workers primarily because they pay them ?4 an hour less than Honda | :05:13. | :05:15.
workers and consequently, wd have seen almost 100 Honda workers being | :05:16. | :05:19.
forced out of their job and contract workers staying in jobs that | :05:20. | :05:23.
previously Honda workers were doing. The company wouldn't talk today | :05:24. | :05:26.
insisting in a written statdment they must remain flexible. They are | :05:27. | :05:37.
doing all they can to safegtard jobs at the plant. But while production | :05:38. | :05:41.
slows down here, other car firms are going flat out. | :05:42. | :05:45.
It is very popular. Hyundais, all their factories are at maxilum | :05:46. | :05:49.
output so we can't get hold of some of the cars. Honda was alwaxs in the | :05:50. | :05:53.
middle of the range and BMW and Audi have bought some of their products | :05:54. | :05:57.
down, and price realigned which is nipping at the top end of Honda and | :05:58. | :06:01.
the likes of Hyundai and Suzuki are nipping away at the bottom dnd so | :06:02. | :06:04.
their main products are getting squeezed in the middle. | :06:05. | :06:07.
Will this be the last jobs fair for workers leaving Honda? That depends | :06:08. | :06:10.
on the designers and marketders in Japan, not the Swindonians who make | :06:11. | :06:20.
the cars. ? The new Southmead Hospital in | :06:21. | :06:24.
Bristol has been forced to postpone 180 operations because some of the | :06:25. | :06:28.
operating theatres aren't rdady Services have been transferred from | :06:29. | :06:31.
Frenchay but there's a problem with the airflow in some areas of the new | :06:32. | :06:40.
site. Rugby and Bath have mist out on the | :06:41. | :06:46.
European challenge cup losing to Northampton tonight. They ldt the | :06:47. | :06:49.
game at half`time but mistakes in the second half cost them ddarly. | :06:50. | :06:57.
Tickets for the final were like gold dust, just 1000 made available to | :06:58. | :07:04.
Bath despite the stadium holding 12,000 times that. | :07:05. | :07:08.
A bit of a shame. Very important for the club. Got to win somethhng this | :07:09. | :07:12.
season. It's amazing to be here. Very | :07:13. | :07:17.
excited and very nervous. It promised to be a thriller, | :07:18. | :07:25.
Bath's last chance of a trophy. After two penalties apiece, the | :07:26. | :07:30.
breakthrough moment. A breakaway try by Bath's Anthony Watson and when he | :07:31. | :07:37.
gets clear, no one catches him. The lead should have been greatdr but | :07:38. | :07:41.
they usually deadly George Ford mist not once, but three times. Gasps of | :07:42. | :07:49.
disbelief. No such charity from Northampton. Stephen Myler kicked | :07:50. | :07:52.
them and friends but when the Saints rumbled over for a try, Bath's | :07:53. | :07:58.
chance had gone. After misshng out on the premiership play`offs on the | :07:59. | :08:02.
last day, this defeat will hurt despite a fine season, they have no | :08:03. | :08:13.
trophy to show for it. That's it from us. We are b`ck | :08:14. | :08:21.
throughout the weekend. Good evening. A lot of showers around | :08:22. | :08:27.
through Saturday. Simmer will be showery. There will be gradtally an | :08:28. | :08:31.
improvement through Sunday with less showers and by Mendes, many of our | :08:32. | :08:38.
districts are seeing dry we`ther with an isolated shower. Tonight 's | :08:39. | :08:43.
temperatures getting down to eight ` 10 Celsius with showers frol the | :08:44. | :08:46.
East as we have through the night and by tomorrow morning, sole of | :08:47. | :08:49.
those will be in abundance towards the east. That will set the tone | :08:50. | :08:57.
frequent showers and some dry frequent showers and some dry | :08:58. | :09:02.
interludes but generally a lot of cloud. Difficult to pin down where | :09:03. | :09:05.
the showers will be and the timing of those that may be fading away | :09:06. | :09:10.
through the evening. Temper`tures tomorrow will struggle under those | :09:11. | :09:17.
conditions to about 14`15dC. Sunday, and improving pitches with lany | :09:18. | :09:21.
areas try and sunny but somd heavy showers about. On Monday, fdel | :09:22. | :09:23.
showers. you over to Peter Gibson and | :09:24. | :09:30.
National forecast. The bank holiday weekend weather is | :09:31. | :09:43.
not looking user-friendly although most places should get one decent | :09:44. | :09:48.
day out of the three and some places will get two. We have low pressure, | :09:49. | :09:58.
and there will be showers around over the next couple of days | :09:59. | :10:02.
particularly. Sunshine breaking through now and again. It will pick | :10:03. | :10:09.
up temperatures. Tonight we have rain. We have had thunderstorms in | :10:10. | :10:16.
northern England. They are moving into Northern Ireland. A lot of dry | :10:17. | :10:23.
weather will stop misty in the north-east. On Saturday, there is a | :10:24. | :10:32.
mass of cloud and rain running around the low pressure. There will | :10:33. | :10:40.
be heavy rain. It will make slow progress northwards. | :10:41. | :10:42. |
