The new Environment Secretary has been in Somerset today on hdr

first visit to the area which was devastated by the winter floods

Ten days after taking up her new position, Elizabeth Truss wdnt to

Burrowbridge to see the dredging of the rivers Tone and Parrdtt.

But some people who were badly affected by

the floods say they're disappointed not to meet the minister in person

Monday morning and day ten in the post and the new

Environment Minister Elisabdth Truss is deep in Somerset by the side

of the River Tone, seeing for herself the dredging developments.

After all, it is costing her government over ?5 million.

The reason I am in Somerset within ten days of being appointed

is I see it as a real priorhty to make sure the area

is properly protected against flooding and to make sure

we're putting in place our action plan

What I'm delighted to see is the dredging taking placd,

the fact the dredging is on schedule.

I know that is very important from the point of view

of local businesses, local residents.

As the Environment Secretarx said, the dredging is on track `

They've been doing it now for four months.

They have dredged three kilometres of the eight kilometre stretch.

But it's not just dredging her predecessor Owen Paterson

was talking about, he was also looking at the possibility

of a barrage outside Bridgewater that could cost ?30 million.

Today the new Secretary said she would not be drawn on this.

We will be looking at furthdr proposals as time goes on

but the government has shown its commitment

by putting the funding into Somerset for this.

A driver involved in an accident which killed

a three`year`old boy in Bristol is to be prosecuted for manslatghter.

Freddie Hussey died in a collision in Bedminster back in January.

have any of those things and it did have a trust account for many but

there is no many in that account so that is something that as p`rt of

our duties, legally responshble duties, we will have to invdstigate.

Administrators are still trxing to establish the financial poshtion.

company collapsed, no one h`s been left stranded either at homd or
