We start our trip down memory lane to see how the BBC here in Bristol | :00:44. | :00:52.
Detectives in Bath have spent the day searching | :00:53. | :01:02.
the River Avon trying to find a missing 18`year`old last sedn in the | :01:03. | :01:06.
Sammuel Amin has just finished his A`levels and is due to go to | :01:07. | :01:12.
Sammuel was last seen outside a city centre bar. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Our reporter, Ali Vowles, has followed the search teal | :01:18. | :01:19.
I have been out and about all day with the police as they look for | :01:20. | :01:35.
Sammuel Amin, or Sam as he hs known to his friends. His family `re | :01:36. | :01:42.
distraught. They just want to find him. He was just a young man on a | :01:43. | :01:47.
night out and was hoping to continue with his studies. In the brhght | :01:48. | :01:55.
sunshine, police divers entdred the Avon, hoping to eliminate this line | :01:56. | :02:02.
of enquiry. Today, Sam's picture is everywhere on social media. Everyone | :02:03. | :02:04.
is keen to discover what happened. Sam had been out for the night | :02:05. | :02:08.
and ended up here at Opa, a Greek basement bar | :02:09. | :02:11.
and restaurant on North Par`de. He left around two am | :02:12. | :02:13.
and was caught on CCTV as hd walked He turned to cold, and this is the | :02:14. | :02:28.
last that anyone saw all of him We know he took that route frol CCTV, | :02:29. | :02:33.
but he has not been seen or heard of since. We are very worried `bout | :02:34. | :02:37.
this disappears which is very out of character. Everyone says he is a | :02:38. | :02:41.
healthy young man, there ard no concerns about his welfare before | :02:42. | :02:44.
going missing. He was probably drunk on his walkable. `` walk hole. It is | :02:45. | :02:53.
completely out of the ordin`ry. the police were out searching | :02:54. | :02:55.
for any clues as to what might have happened to Sam on his routd | :02:56. | :02:58.
from the club to his home. Divers are researching the stretch | :02:59. | :03:08.
of the river next to the pattern where Sam may have walked. His | :03:09. | :03:11.
friends say he often used the river route to get back to Twerton. | :03:12. | :03:12.
It's a popular route with cxclists and walkers at any time of day | :03:13. | :03:17.
Today, although none of them wanted to be filmed, | :03:18. | :03:20.
they were giving out leaflets, to jog the public?s memory. | :03:21. | :03:23.
While the divers are getting ready to go in the water, 12 will be going | :03:24. | :03:30.
in, searching in this area to start with. It is next to the towpath | :03:31. | :03:37.
where Sam may have walked. They will be talking to friends, family, taxi | :03:38. | :03:42.
divers. Everyone is desperate to find him. | :03:43. | :03:44.
The River Avon has seen its fair share of tragedy over | :03:45. | :03:46.
As the search continues for clues, all hope Sam will be found `live | :03:47. | :03:50.
You can see the divers at the moment, but they are still out | :03:51. | :04:06.
there. The police say the c`t `` family are being comforted by | :04:07. | :04:08.
friends and the local vicar. Let me just give you | :04:09. | :04:11.
a description of Sam. He's described as asian, | :04:12. | :04:13.
5ft 11inches tall, of slim build He was wearing blue jeans and a | :04:14. | :04:16.
red and black lumber`style jacket. Tomorrow it's possible that police | :04:17. | :04:20.
divers will continue their search The police are really keen to hear | :04:21. | :04:29.
from anyone who may have spotted him. | :04:30. | :04:31.
Wiltshire's chief constable, Pat Geenty, is being investigatdd by the | :04:32. | :04:34.
police watchdog following complaints about the way the force handled | :04:35. | :04:37.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is also investig`ting | :04:38. | :04:43.
the actions of an inspector and a detective constable. | :04:44. | :04:46.
Mr Geenty has said he's shocked by the allegation. | :04:47. | :04:50.
This latest development means that three of | :04:51. | :04:51.
the West's most senior officers are now the subject of investig`tions. | :04:52. | :04:56.
Here's our Home Affairs Correspondent, | :04:57. | :04:58.
In 2008, Pat Geenty was Wiltshire's assistant | :04:59. | :05:02.
chief constable when the force received allegations from a member | :05:03. | :05:06.
The victim and the alleged abuser were not police officers | :05:07. | :05:12.
A year later a complaint was made about how the | :05:13. | :05:15.
And now it's been claimed that the detective inspector | :05:16. | :05:19.
and a detective constable whthheld information from the complahnants | :05:20. | :05:23.
It?s also claimed that Patrick Geenty, in his role | :05:24. | :05:29.
as assistant chief constabld, also kept back information `nd | :05:30. | :05:32.
I am shocked by the allegathon that I suspect do have misled a | :05:33. | :05:44.
compliment. Mr Geenty remains in his job | :05:45. | :05:55.
as chief constable today. But the inspector, | :05:56. | :05:57.
who hasn't been named, The detective constable has been | :05:58. | :05:59.
removed from operational duties The IP CC says it is confiddnt that | :06:00. | :06:17.
its forces take complaints seriously and will act with integrity. | :06:18. | :06:21.
In Avon and Somerset, chief constable Nick Gargan remains | :06:22. | :06:23.
suspended following allegathons of inappropriate behaviour with two | :06:24. | :06:25.
female members of staff and data protection offences. | :06:26. | :06:27.
He strongly denies these allegations. | :06:28. | :06:29.
And Gloucestershire's chief constable Suzette Davenport has been | :06:30. | :06:30.
the subject of a long running IPCC investigation into her part in | :06:31. | :06:33.
As in all matters surrounding chief constables, any decision on their | :06:34. | :06:38.
employment is made by the individual police and crime commissiondr. | :06:39. | :06:47.
Three men have been released on bail after a man was allegedly thrown | :06:48. | :06:50.
from a van in Wotton`under`ddge leaving him critically injured. | :06:51. | :06:54.
The 41`year`old is in a life threatening condition | :06:55. | :06:55.
in hospital following the incident on Saturday night. | :06:56. | :06:59.
Police would like to hear from anyone who may have sedn | :07:00. | :07:02.
a green Volkswagen van drivhng the wrong way down a one way street | :07:03. | :07:07.
A former Mayor of Weston`super`Mare has been sentenced to 14 months in | :07:08. | :07:10.
Philip Judd, seen here in the baseball cap, had pldaded | :07:11. | :07:17.
guilty to 12 charges, including making indecent photographs | :07:18. | :07:20.
of a child and possessing fhlms and images of children. | :07:21. | :07:25.
The court heard he had hundreds of pictures and videos stordd | :07:26. | :07:28.
on computer equipment when his home was raided | :07:29. | :07:31.
by officers The message I would send out is to those who continud to seek | :07:32. | :07:38.
A Trowbridge couple who hanged their dog because they didn't want | :07:39. | :07:40.
to pay to have it put down have escaped prison. | :07:41. | :07:43.
Veronica Reid and Jon Allen, along with another man, werd caught | :07:44. | :07:45.
The case has been described in court today as particularly nasty | :07:46. | :07:50.
Shandy's owner, Veronica Rehd, had nothing to say | :07:51. | :08:02.
as she left Salisbury Magistrates Court with her partner Jon @llen. | :08:03. | :08:05.
The court had heard Allen and his friend, Paul Brown, | :08:06. | :08:08.
had approached a vet to ask about having the aggressive dog ptt down. | :08:09. | :08:14.
It was in the attic of this terraced house in J`nuary | :08:15. | :08:16.
when Allen and Brown, instructed by Reid, decided to take | :08:17. | :08:20.
They suspended Shandy by the neck until the collie dog died. | :08:21. | :08:26.
A death the court heard was unnecessary and would've catsed | :08:27. | :08:29.
The RSPCA began investigating after a conversation with a neighbour | :08:30. | :08:38.
All three had pleaded guiltx at a previous hearing. | :08:39. | :08:41.
Today, Reid was given 18 wedks and Allen 23 weeks in custody, | :08:42. | :08:46.
A warrant was issued for Paul Brown's arrest | :08:47. | :08:51.
Sentencing the couple, Mrs Aitken`Sykes described | :08:52. | :08:56.
the crime as a particularly nasty and revolting action. | :08:57. | :09:00.
She said that there were alternatives too. | :09:01. | :09:04.
As well as suspended prison sentences they've been banndd | :09:05. | :09:07.
There are charities that will help and if you've been to them `nd | :09:08. | :09:22.
explain the situation, of course they will help. The vets can also | :09:23. | :09:27.
provide payment plans to help spread out the cost if they can afford that | :09:28. | :09:31.
in one go. There are other options. Hanging a dog is never an option. | :09:32. | :09:33.
The court heard the couple has suffered vilification in Trowbridge | :09:34. | :09:36.
A meeting is being held tonhght to reassure people who live | :09:37. | :09:42.
in one of the areas of Gloucestershire where thd badger | :09:43. | :09:44.
During the last cull some pdople said they were left feeling as if | :09:45. | :09:50.
they were living under siegd as the marksmen and protesters descended. | :09:51. | :10:02.
Is drop`in session is a chance for people to share their concerns and | :10:03. | :10:10.
the problems during the cold. This is one of the hotspots. If `nything | :10:11. | :10:14.
like last year is to go by. What are those concerns? One person worked | :10:15. | :10:21.
with elderly and vulnerable people telling me with `` some problems | :10:22. | :10:26.
they were experiencing. Somd people felt threatened by the numbdrs of | :10:27. | :10:34.
people that were around all hours of the day. Particularly late `t night. | :10:35. | :10:39.
The noise issue, the car doors opening and shutting. They felt | :10:40. | :10:44.
quite vulnerable and threatdned With me now is Sergeant Paul Simons | :10:45. | :10:49.
in charge of community policing during the cold. Last year xou were | :10:50. | :10:55.
not engaged `` criticised for not engaging the community is properly. | :10:56. | :10:59.
This year our approaches might well community orientated. We will | :11:00. | :11:03.
speaking directly with thosd affected in the cult area and those | :11:04. | :11:10.
who are visiting. We look to resolve those with the work we have | :11:11. | :11:13.
completed to date. What sort of problems are you encounter hn? | :11:14. | :11:18.
Lights shone into peoples homes is an issue, also trespassing of the | :11:19. | :11:23.
parts. With the pathways issue we are working with the highwaxs public | :11:24. | :11:28.
lights and byways officers to resolve these issues. The issue is | :11:29. | :11:35.
also with protesters? Yes, we are approaching those in a fair and | :11:36. | :11:38.
impartial manner and are happy to speak with all communities. The Carl | :11:39. | :11:43.
has been on for a week now. Any interesting developments? Wd are | :11:44. | :11:50.
investigating both parties. It has been an interesting week. This | :11:51. | :11:56.
session runs until 8pm if you want to come along. There are other | :11:57. | :11:58.
sessions throughout Gloucestershire in the cold zone from now until the | :11:59. | :12:01.
end of October. A very warm welcome to BBC Points | :12:02. | :12:11.
West on this Monday Evening. We've still got plenty more to come, | :12:12. | :12:14.
including: Bristol City celebrate their | :12:15. | :12:16.
best season start in a centtry. Two aspiring hairdressers | :12:17. | :12:26.
from Gloucestershire have bdcome the first to receive funding | :12:27. | :12:29.
from the Hollie Gazzard Trust. The award was set up in the name | :12:30. | :12:32.
of Hollie, who was murdered by her ex boyfriend, | :12:33. | :12:35.
while she worked in a salon. Asher Maslin is now serving life | :12:36. | :12:38.
in prison. Our reporter, Laura Jones, | :12:39. | :12:42.
has been to meet Hollie's f`mily, Straightening, | :12:43. | :12:44.
cutting and colouring: For 18`year`old Laura Tibbetts, | :12:45. | :12:51.
this is all a dream come trte. The teenager from Gloucester has | :12:52. | :12:55.
always wanted to be a hairdresser, but the cost of getting started | :12:56. | :12:58.
on a course meant she just couldn't It is an honour to be chosen to | :12:59. | :13:15.
this. It is nice to be carrying on the | :13:16. | :13:21.
legacy of her. I wouldn't bd able to do this without her fund. | :13:22. | :13:27.
The fund was set up in Hollhe's memory, after she was killed | :13:28. | :13:30.
by her ex boyfriend, whilst at work back in Febrtary | :13:31. | :13:32.
So far it's raised more than ?50,000, and the family are choosing | :13:33. | :13:35.
to use some of it to help others in the local area. | :13:36. | :13:45.
We didn't want Holly to be `nother statistic. We don't it was ` | :13:46. | :13:56.
positive way of reacting to such a tragic incident. She was a wonderful | :13:57. | :14:00.
And there are plans to do even more in the future. | :14:01. | :14:03.
The fund is hoping help trahn other hairdressers spot signs | :14:04. | :14:06.
of domestic abuse , and the sort of unhealthy relationship, | :14:07. | :14:08.
It's a case of noticing when relationships are unhealthy and when | :14:09. | :14:25.
domestic abuse is evident. Hopefully, we can save people from | :14:26. | :14:33.
It's a venue which has seen sell`out performances by the Beatles, | :14:34. | :14:39.
Rolling Stones and the Bay City Rollers, to name but a few. | :14:40. | :14:42.
Now, the Colston Hall is in need of a major overhaul, | :14:43. | :14:45.
Concert organisers want to lake it one of the best venues in Etrope, | :14:46. | :14:51.
but, as Andy Howard reports, the decision to re`model the hall has | :14:52. | :14:54.
It's the largest concert hall in the south west, | :14:55. | :15:00.
and has been full of music, laughter and debate for almost 150 ydars | :15:01. | :15:10.
After a new ?20 million Boydt, five years ago, the focus is now on | :15:11. | :15:32.
this: The older part of the building. This band from thd Congo | :15:33. | :15:39.
arrived this afternoon and had to bring all their gear through one | :15:40. | :15:44.
small door. UK sticks here were designed for the 1950s. | :15:45. | :15:52.
The back stage is lamentabld, I m afraid. It's just needs an tpgrade, | :15:53. | :15:58.
all round. Everything could be better. | :15:59. | :16:05.
But for some, the main issud is and what goes on behind the door, it is | :16:06. | :16:31.
what is written above it will stop. So, as this figure loomed over the | :16:32. | :16:37.
city of Bristol for two long? The name coast and represents a ball, | :16:38. | :16:43.
greed, death and torture. Dhd people of Bristol wants to be reminded of | :16:44. | :16:47.
that all the time? We would want something positive, not somdthing | :16:48. | :16:56.
negative, like this man herd. The Houston hole is considering changing | :16:57. | :16:57.
his name `` its name. Bristol City are top of League One, | :16:58. | :17:04.
and the club has made the best start to the season any | :17:05. | :17:06.
of its fans can remember. Our sports editor, Alistair Durden, | :17:07. | :17:09.
has been looking through Several hours in the blowing dust | :17:10. | :17:12.
of the archives reveal it is the For the record, | :17:13. | :17:21.
they went top of League One with So that's five wins | :17:22. | :17:33.
from seven games, and a stark contrast to the poor starts | :17:34. | :17:36.
they've made in recent seasons. And a reminder if you missed any | :17:37. | :17:39.
of the weekend's goals When Bristol City last started | :17:40. | :17:46.
a season this well, there were no tv cameras, | :17:47. | :17:48.
and the manager wore a bowldr hat. It was 1905 | :17:49. | :17:53.
and the club won the division two title, pipping Manchester United | :17:54. | :17:55.
and losing just twice all sdason. The class of 2014 are somew`y | :17:56. | :17:59.
off matching that, but they're top of the league and unbeaten so far. | :18:00. | :18:03.
It's too early to talk It's nice to be top of the table, | :18:04. | :18:18.
but I'd rather be top of thd table in May. We've had enough pahn, | :18:19. | :18:26.
misery and heartache, here over the last few years. It is our dtty to | :18:27. | :18:32.
try and keep this level of optimism for as long as we can. | :18:33. | :18:34.
Aaron Wilbraham certainly knows what it takes. | :18:35. | :18:36.
His career CV includes four promotions with his previous clubs. | :18:37. | :18:44.
Each time I've been promoted we d never been the most popular. | :18:45. | :18:56.
However, we are putting in `mazing performances. | :18:57. | :19:00.
Commitment will be the biggdst thing. We need football, and flair. | :19:01. | :19:12.
Next, two away games to test that unbeaten start, as they | :19:13. | :19:16.
try to emulate the Ashton G`te greats that have gone beford them. | :19:17. | :19:29.
And a reminder if you missed any of the weekend's goals | :19:30. | :19:32.
from the football league, like this debut double from | :19:33. | :19:34.
Swindon Town's Jon Obika, then it's worth a visit to the BBC iPlayer. | :19:35. | :19:37.
The Football League Show is available to watch for the rest | :19:38. | :19:40.
It was also a good weekend for our Premiership rugby shdes | :19:41. | :19:44.
Gloucester overturned a 1 point deficit at half`thme to | :19:45. | :19:46.
eventually beat Sale 34`27, with three second`half tries. | :19:47. | :19:48.
There was a much bigger margin of victory at the Rec | :19:49. | :19:51.
Jonathan Joseph and Semesa Rokoduguni both getthng over | :19:52. | :19:56.
I think a pretty successful weekend, don't you think? | :19:57. | :20:15.
Now, did you know that the BBC building here on Whiteladies Road | :20:16. | :20:18.
opened for the first time 80 years ago this week? | :20:19. | :20:21.
To celebrate the occasion wd asked John Craven to come back to where he | :20:22. | :20:24.
first started his career, right here at Points West. | :20:25. | :20:28.
In the first of our films this week, John delved | :20:29. | :20:33.
into the archives to look at the early years of the BBC in Bristol: | :20:34. | :20:40.
So how did the BBC come to be based in Whiteladies Road? | :20:41. | :20:42.
Two BBC bigwigs were on the lookout for suitable prdmises, | :20:43. | :20:49.
in Bristol, and they spotted this unoccupied building in the corner. | :20:50. | :20:53.
They liked what they saw, so the BBC bought it. | :20:54. | :21:00.
The Lord Mayor of Bristol officially opened the | :21:01. | :21:03.
There were four radio studios, three for speech and drama and ond big | :21:04. | :21:19.
The outbreak of war transformed things. | :21:20. | :21:29.
With London under heavy bombing the BBC sent it entire | :21:30. | :21:31.
entertainment department to the comparative safety of Bristol. | :21:32. | :21:36.
The big names put on their radio shows in parhsh halls | :21:37. | :21:39.
The aim was to keep up the nation's spirits | :21:40. | :21:43.
Bristol hosted productions such as ITAM (It's That Man Again.) | :21:44. | :22:04.
With the threat of invasion and the ever present danger | :22:05. | :22:06.
of bombing, BBC set up its very fortress, in Bristol. | :22:07. | :22:13.
It has a control room and emergency studios. | :22:14. | :22:16.
But is there any trace of it left today? | :22:17. | :22:19.
Well, I'm going to have to clamber down 316 steps. | :22:20. | :22:26.
The secret BBC studios were hidden inside the Clifton rocks | :22:27. | :22:36.
So, I'm heading underground, to meet Peter Davey, one of the | :22:37. | :22:45.
This would have been buzzing during the war, though. | :22:46. | :23:10.
80 telephone lines were comhng in here and all the reports | :23:11. | :23:15.
This is the studio where falous faces would have read the ndws. | :23:16. | :23:34.
There's an old`fashioned BBC microphone! | :23:35. | :23:35.
If there had been an invasion, Bristol would have been | :23:36. | :23:44.
This studio would have been where those famous broadcasters would have | :23:45. | :23:50.
sent out messages about resistance from. | :23:51. | :23:53.
Of course, when the war enddd, so did all of this. | :23:54. | :23:59.
Just one problem now, 316 steps to climb up! | :24:00. | :24:13.
Let's go to Ian with the we`ther: We will find that the weather for the | :24:14. | :24:51.
next the days will have two elements to it. They will be slightlx warmer | :24:52. | :25:02.
weather but also showers. The showers could turn quite he`vy and | :25:03. | :25:07.
we have had them for quite ` number of days. The majority, however, will | :25:08. | :25:20.
see a dry day. The key thing, really is the high pressure, domin`ting. | :25:21. | :25:24.
There are low pressures tow`rds the south. There will be the activation | :25:25. | :25:34.
of the possibility of furthdr showers, arriving late tonight. We | :25:35. | :25:40.
have seen a few showers across parts of Gloucestershire today, and as the | :25:41. | :25:46.
night wears on, it will turn into a pretty murky story for most of us. | :25:47. | :25:56.
We will get some old at low levels. The Forest of Dean, in parthcular. | :25:57. | :26:03.
They could equally be a few showers around in the South for the second | :26:04. | :26:11.
half of the night. Temperattres are low, 10`13 Celsius. One to showers | :26:12. | :26:26.
and generally dark. There whll be a few isolated showers that could be | :26:27. | :26:34.
thundery, in some isolated places. There will be sunny spells tomorrow | :26:35. | :26:37.
and it will certainly be a pretty warm day. Going beyond that, as we | :26:38. | :26:46.
experience further influencd of the low`pressure, it will be warmer but | :26:47. | :26:52.
they will be increasing chances of showers. You can see that on the | :26:53. | :27:03.
graphics here: By the way, there is more I can't `` archive on our | :27:04. | :27:17.
Facebook page:, and Ian 's shared! | :27:18. | :27:22. |
