still questions about how the whole of the UK is governed. | :00:00. | :00:19.
Good evening. A group of 18 tradesmen have won their equal pay | :00:20. | :00:23.
claim against their employers after arguing female colleagues on the | :00:24. | :00:27.
same grade were paid more. The University of Wales, Trinity Saint | :00:28. | :00:30.
David, told an employment tribunal they would no longer contest the | :00:31. | :00:42.
claim, as Jenny Rees reports. Months and years of frustration | :00:43. | :00:46.
finally at an end. These are three of the 18 tradesmen, plumbers, | :00:47. | :00:52.
carpenters and caretakers, who were told today they had won their case | :00:53. | :00:57.
against their employers. It is relief, I'll be honest, and we are | :00:58. | :01:02.
ecstatic that they have conceded and we have won the case. It has been | :01:03. | :01:05.
recognised that we have been discriminated against. They were | :01:06. | :01:10.
originally employed by Swansea Metropolitan University, which | :01:11. | :01:14.
merged with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in August last | :01:15. | :01:18.
year. The claim focused on a change in their contracts. Initially they | :01:19. | :01:22.
were on a 45 hour working week which was changed to a 37 hour week, with | :01:23. | :01:27.
the agreement that the additional eight hours would be paid in | :01:28. | :01:31.
overtime. It was only when they came to sign the contracts that they | :01:32. | :01:35.
realise they were on a lower hourly rate than women on the same grade. | :01:36. | :01:40.
The University of Wales to me to Saint David said they had no | :01:41. | :01:43.
involvement in decisions made in 2007. They said they are | :01:44. | :01:47.
disappointed the new university has to deal with the consequences of | :01:48. | :01:52.
historical decisions. We are simple folk, really. We did hope it would | :01:53. | :02:01.
not come to a tribunal. I think we were quite shocked when we got this | :02:02. | :02:06.
far. This is not in the most pleasant of experiences, I'll be | :02:07. | :02:09.
honest, but the outcome has been wonderful. Roughly ?4000 is being | :02:10. | :02:15.
sought per worker for every year they have worked there. For some, | :02:16. | :02:19.
that dates back six years. Those compensation discussions continue | :02:20. | :02:22.
tomorrow. The number of people injured in | :02:23. | :02:25.
violent crime across Wales and England, has fallen by 12% according | :02:26. | :02:28.
to researchers at Cardiff University. Academics say one of the | :02:29. | :02:31.
reasons is a change in drinking habits. The study showed there were | :02:32. | :02:34.
still more than 200,000 people needing treatment following violence | :02:35. | :02:46.
last year. Here's Matt Murray. Now 34 years old, Paul has spent the | :02:47. | :02:50.
past seven years learning to walk, talk and eat again. He was attacked | :02:51. | :02:55.
during a night out, and it left him in a coma for nearly two months. | :02:56. | :02:57.
They came from behind me. A study from Cardiff University has | :02:58. | :03:33.
shown that violent crime like this has fallen by 12%. Professor | :03:34. | :03:39.
Jonathan Shepherd is a lead author of the study. He has seen horrific | :03:40. | :03:42.
facial damage from drunken violent crime. A change in alcohol habit is | :03:43. | :03:50.
something to do with this. Alcohol has become less affordable since | :03:51. | :03:56.
about 2008, and it has become less affordable, particularly for people | :03:57. | :04:02.
aged 18-30 because they have less disposable income than they had | :04:03. | :04:07.
before. So it is believed that it is the rising cost of alcohol which is | :04:08. | :04:11.
a major fact before this the crease. They found that 235,000 | :04:12. | :04:15.
people were treated in the UK last year following a violent attack. | :04:16. | :04:20.
That is Millie 33,000 fewer than the previous year. It is a drop of 12%. | :04:21. | :04:25.
But it is feared that number could rise as the economic situation | :04:26. | :04:30.
improves. Staff at this bar in Cardiff say | :04:31. | :04:34.
they have seen a change in people's drinking habits. Now, customers | :04:35. | :04:39.
would rather spend their money on quality drinks rather than quantity. | :04:40. | :04:43.
People want to guard once a week and have a proper night and have an | :04:44. | :04:47.
experience they will remember and enjoy. So they are not getting drunk | :04:48. | :04:50.
to the point where they can't remember what they did. Paul and his | :04:51. | :04:54.
mother welcomed the news that violent crime has fallen if it means | :04:55. | :04:59.
fewer people will have to go through what Paul has and has to totally | :05:00. | :05:03.
rebuild his life after a drunken attack. | :05:04. | :05:05.
Griff Rhys Jones has withdrawn from becoming Cardiff University's new | :05:06. | :05:07.
Chancellor just two weeks after an embarrassing debacle which saw his | :05:08. | :05:10.
appointment halted at the last minute. The university's court | :05:11. | :05:12.
blocked the appointment when it emerged current Chancellor Sir | :05:13. | :05:15.
Martin Evans was not offered the chance to be reappointed. It led to | :05:16. | :05:18.
calls for resignations and the university has apologised. | :05:19. | :05:26.
House sales are on the up in Wales with thousands more properties | :05:27. | :05:29.
changing hands at the start of this year compared to the same period | :05:30. | :05:33.
last year. Figures released by HM Revenue and Customs show a rise of | :05:34. | :05:36.
21% here between January and March. That's slightly below the UK average | :05:37. | :05:39.
of 24%. Here's our business correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :05:40. | :06:00.
The sounds of a market bouncing back. The figures today show the | :06:01. | :06:04.
trend of people having more confidence to buy and sell | :06:05. | :06:07.
properties. As the economic crisis hit, buyers dried up and house | :06:08. | :06:11.
prices dropped. In recent months, I'll implement has fallen faster | :06:12. | :06:15.
than expected, and interest rates remain at an all-time low. Trevor is | :06:16. | :06:20.
an estate agent with 21 offices across Wales. Have got a bit more | :06:21. | :06:25.
spare money and it has given them confidence. They see house prices | :06:26. | :06:30.
rejected to rise a little in the next few years, and it has given | :06:31. | :06:35.
them confidence to buy. The Welsh government introduced help to buy | :06:36. | :06:38.
Wales on 2nd of January. It was supposed to boost the market and | :06:39. | :06:43.
increase house-building. Borrowers need a 5% deposit. They can have an | :06:44. | :06:47.
interest-free loan from the Welsh government of 20% of the property's | :06:48. | :06:52.
value, but it can only be used for new builds up to ?300,000. Help to | :06:53. | :06:57.
buy has probably added to the confidence around which has got | :06:58. | :07:01.
people buying and businesses building, but there are worries this | :07:02. | :07:05.
new demand is not being met by enough added supply of houses. We | :07:06. | :07:11.
would like to see smaller builders building more of our houses, and | :07:12. | :07:15.
that is mainly through the planning system. We would like to see land | :07:16. | :07:18.
being released in smaller parts, rather than in pig areas where only | :07:19. | :07:24.
the house-builders can compete for that. By empowering the smaller | :07:25. | :07:28.
builder, we believe we can eventually meet that demand for | :07:29. | :07:33.
houses. Many will welcome the emergence of the housing market from | :07:34. | :07:37.
what has been a desperate period. The challenge will be to continue to | :07:38. | :07:40.
see improvements without prices being pushed up young sensible | :07:41. | :07:42.
levels. Snooker, and Welshman Dominic Dale | :07:43. | :07:46.
is leading in his first round match at the World championships. He's | :07:47. | :07:51.
currently ahead 5-1 against Mark Davis at the Crucible, hoping to | :07:52. | :07:54.
make it through to the final 16. Let's take a look at the weather | :07:55. | :07:56.
now. The weather will be in better shape | :07:57. | :08:09.
tomorrow. More in the way of dry weather, some sunshine to look | :08:10. | :08:12.
forward to as well. A few showers in parts of the South and West tonight, | :08:13. | :08:17.
otherwise it is a dry story. Breaks in the cloud, if you missed in fog | :08:18. | :08:23.
patches forming, and Chile inland. A great start for some of us tomorrow | :08:24. | :08:29.
morning. Fog patches generally lifting. Dry in the morning with a | :08:30. | :08:35.
mixture of cloud and sunshine. Across the west of the UK, some rain | :08:36. | :08:42.
in the north-east of Scotland. Fog patches in the Midlands and southern | :08:43. | :08:45.
England will lift. Then there will be some sunshine and a few showers | :08:46. | :08:50.
raking out which could be heavy. A lot of places will remain drive. -- | :08:51. | :09:02.
try. Many places will be dry with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells | :09:03. | :09:08.
and a high of 14 with light winds and sea breezes. Any showers will | :09:09. | :09:12.
fade away tomorrow evening to leave a clear night, but there will be | :09:13. | :09:16.
some mist and fog patches forming, and once again quite cold in mid | :09:17. | :09:22.
Wales. Friday sees more dry weather and some sunshine, but they could be | :09:23. | :09:25.
some scattered showers breaking out in the afternoon, which could turn | :09:26. | :09:30.
heavy in places. For the weekend, there is no chance of a heatwave. A | :09:31. | :09:34.
deep area of low pressure on our doorstep means breezy conditions, | :09:35. | :09:40.
showers and longer spells of rain, but some brighter spells as well. | :09:41. | :09:43.
Temperatures around the seasonal average. | :09:44. | :09:49.
