Nick Clegg tells his supporters to stand firm, dismissing talk | :00:00. | 3:59:59

admit to being racially prejudiced. It's one of the biggest increases | :00:00. | :00:19.
in the UK. It is misinformation and people have | :00:20. | :00:34.
not been educated on some of these topics. | :00:35. | :00:47.
The Lib Dem Leader in Wales gives her wholehearted | :00:48. | :00:53.

The home of one of Wales best known war poets, Hedd Wyn, | :00:58. | :01:00.

The Urdd Eisteddfod, one of Europe's biggest youth festival, comes home. | :01:06. | :01:22.
The man in charge of policing the NATO summit in Newport says | :01:23. | :01:25.
the security, in places, will be more rigorous than the | :01:26. | :01:28.
London Olympic Games and will "break new ground" for a British event. | :01:29. | :01:31.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Armitt says thousands of police | :01:32. | :01:34.
from every force in the UK will take part. | :01:35. | :01:36.
It comes as protestors in Newport tell BBC Wales there are already | :01:37. | :01:40.
plans for a large demonstration in the city before the summit. | :01:41. | :01:43.
Scenes from the last NATO Summit two years ago. Thousands of | :01:44. | :02:00.
demonstrators clashing with police in protests that cost the city | :02:01. | :02:05.
around ?20 million. In 100 days the next summit will begin in Newport | :02:06. | :02:11.
and the man in charge of the thousands of officers policing it | :02:12. | :02:14.
says this operation will break new ground. The number of countries | :02:15. | :02:22.
coming and their heads of state and diplomats will push the number of | :02:23. | :02:26.
protective people up past what we have dealt with previously. That | :02:27. | :02:31.
includes the London Olympic Games in 2012 which was protected by | :02:32. | :02:34.
soldiers, warships and even missiles. But it is a balancing act. | :02:35. | :02:43.
I would not expect to see any dignitary completely surrounded by | :02:44. | :02:47.
police officers. It might mean we are responding to someone. | :02:48. | :02:55.
Protesters and anti-NATO groups have arrived in Newport. Their banners | :02:56. | :03:00.
and flags outside of this restaurant in the city centre. A group called | :03:01. | :03:05.
the anarchist action network have taken over this restaurant and a | :03:06. | :03:11.
hosting discussions on antinuclear campaigning, workers rights and | :03:12. | :03:15.
lessons in basic first aid. Any I have spoken to have come from all | :03:16. | :03:20.
over the UK to be here and say they will be back for the NATO Summit in | :03:21. | :03:25.
September. On Saturday 30th of August there will be a trade union | :03:26. | :03:32.
led demonstration through Newport which will be pretty massive with | :03:33. | :03:36.
people attending from all over Wales and all over the country. That is a | :03:37. | :03:42.
great opportunity for people to jump on board at that stage to see what | :03:43. | :03:47.
it's all about. The scenes give an idea of what may be about to descend | :03:48. | :03:53.
on Newport and Wales. Those charged with its security and safety say | :03:54. | :03:59.
they are ready. We will know in 100 days. | :04:00. | :04:02.
More than a third of people in Wales admit to being racially prejudiced, | :04:03. | :04:06.
one of the biggest increases in the UK since the turn of the century. | :04:07. | :04:10.
That's according to new research from the | :04:11. | :04:12.
It found that 34% of us have some level of prejudice, | :04:13. | :04:16.
The Welsh Government has described the findings as concerning. | :04:17. | :04:24.
Prejudice. It's an opinion that isn't based on reason or actual | :04:25. | :04:39.
experience but more people in Wales say they are prejudiced when it | :04:40. | :04:45.
comes to race. This man from the Swansea area has been arrested four | :04:46. | :04:49.
times for racially aggravated assault. He spoke to me anonymously | :04:50. | :04:54.
about how he used to abuse its asylum seekers in the neighbourhood. | :04:55. | :04:58.
I would shout at them. I used to shout that and tell them this is the | :04:59. | :05:03.
UK. You don't talk that language here. It was because of the jobs. My | :05:04. | :05:08.
father used to say these to take the jobs. You've got the British | :05:09. | :05:14.
National party saying stuff, you've got the National front saying stuff. | :05:15. | :05:19.
You don't know who to believe. He has met people from different | :05:20. | :05:21.
backgrounds with the help of a youth centre and feels very differently | :05:22. | :05:26.
now. It's not the right thing to do. Before I would have thought, yes, | :05:27. | :05:31.
this is a laugh. But it hurts people. They are not there to bomb | :05:32. | :05:36.
us or threaten us. They just want to live peacefully. I can go out now | :05:37. | :05:43.
with no worries. I know my child is going to be happier in the future | :05:44. | :05:46.
because he's not going to learn the racial remarks Ireland. That was an | :05:47. | :05:50.
extreme example of prejudice but this ethnic youth support team has | :05:51. | :05:56.
spoken to 200 young people over the past two years about similar | :05:57. | :06:00.
issues. They have introduced them to people from different backgrounds | :06:01. | :06:05.
and have changed misconceptions. The majority of young people we speak to | :06:06. | :06:09.
are not racist but have strong views towards issues they see in the | :06:10. | :06:14.
news. It is misconceptions and misinformation and they have not in | :06:15. | :06:20.
educated on some of these topics. Once they are educated they know the | :06:21. | :06:25.
truth. The research found that more people admit to being racially | :06:26. | :06:30.
prejudice in Wales now than around a decade ago, up from 20% in 2000 to | :06:31. | :06:38.
34% last year. That is more than in the UK as a whole which runs from | :06:39. | :06:52.
25% to 30%. Many politicians say those findings are concerning. I | :06:53. | :06:59.
think right across the UK economic austerity is a powerful factor in | :07:00. | :07:06.
people developing prejudice and scapegoats. It is not surprising at | :07:07. | :07:12.
a time of economic difficulty that you will find these views. But the | :07:13. | :07:19.
same surgery suggested 70% do not hold these views so let's not create | :07:20. | :07:26.
a dark picture. Someone of us are prepared to admit we have a degree | :07:27. | :07:29.
of prejudice. What today's figures don't fully explain is why more of | :07:30. | :07:34.
us are discriminating on the grounds of race. | :07:35. | :07:38.
Earlier, I spoke to Aled Edwards, chair of the Wales Migration | :07:39. | :07:41.
Partnership, and began by asking him why he thought there'd been a rise | :07:42. | :07:44.
in the number of people admitting to being racially prejudiced. | :07:45. | :07:49.
It has been fairly consistent for a number of years. Low-income is a | :07:50. | :07:55.
factor and people feeling a sense of economic pressure. Benefit cuts as | :07:56. | :08:02.
well. That may shape the sense of a person being insecure and looking to | :08:03. | :08:06.
blame either immigrants are people of a different race. It is part of | :08:07. | :08:12.
the pattern. You have worked in this field for a number of years. Does | :08:13. | :08:17.
this survey reflect the attitudes you come across? It does. We are | :08:18. | :08:25.
picking up stories particularly from young Muslims that they are | :08:26. | :08:31.
experiencing disadvantage socially. Sometimes people complain about | :08:32. | :08:34.
being bullied because of the colour of their skin. Those stories are | :08:35. | :08:39.
becoming more common and if these levels stay at that percentage in | :08:40. | :08:45.
Wales, I think we have big questions to ask about what sort of society we | :08:46. | :08:51.
wish to be and how we actually articulate our national narrative. | :08:52. | :08:54.
Do we drive ourselves by such fears or do we turn shape our future is by | :08:55. | :08:59.
a more hopeful approach? Are we likely to see these levels rise? We | :09:00. | :09:06.
don't know yet. It depends very much on what we as a society demand. It | :09:07. | :09:13.
depends very much on the political narrative and the press in | :09:14. | :09:16.
particular because for a number of years we have had anti-immigration | :09:17. | :09:20.
lines and anti-racist lines coming through very powerfully on a daily | :09:21. | :09:26.
basis. It's very difficult to see a change in those approaches unless we | :09:27. | :09:33.
as a society demand it. So how do we make society more tolerant? The | :09:34. | :09:41.
interesting thing is whenever the economy picks up attitudes are much | :09:42. | :09:45.
better. Sport and culture can help. It's interesting that attitudes are | :09:46. | :09:50.
very low when the line of plastic bricks were being peddled before the | :09:51. | :09:56.
Olympic Games. Once Mo Farah started winning medals attitudes changed | :09:57. | :10:03.
quickly. We need a shared narrative of who we are, to be welcoming and | :10:04. | :10:09.
above all not to scapegoat minorities for what our economic | :10:10. | :10:15.
woes which have not been caused by them. | :10:16. | :10:24.
Just under 57% of ambulances which the targets last month. That is | :10:25. | :10:26.
slightly better than the previous months figures but still short of | :10:27. | :10:28.
the Welsh Government target of 65%. Police are investigating claims that | :10:29. | :10:35.
a child at a Carmarthenshire nursery Dyfed-Powys Police said they were | :10:36. | :10:38.
called over an allegation at the Welsh-medium Clych Meithrin | :10:39. | :10:42.
that serves the villages Officers are working with the | :10:43. | :10:44.
Local Safeguarding Children Board and the Care and Social Services | :10:45. | :10:48.
Inspectorate for Wales. A mental health nurse who had phone | :10:49. | :10:54.
conversations of a sexual nature with a former | :10:55. | :10:56.
patient and a murder suspect has David Abbey Kwei admitted | :10:57. | :10:59.
inappropriate ongoing contact with the woman who was later jailed | :11:00. | :11:03.
for killing her seven-year-old son. The woman told Mr Kwei she loved him | :11:04. | :11:06.
during the phone calls. The panel ruled his fitness to | :11:07. | :11:09.
practice had been impaired. A leading charity is warning | :11:10. | :11:15.
that targets to eradicate child Save the Children says | :11:16. | :11:18.
Welsh Government initiatives aimed at tackling poverty are working, | :11:19. | :11:22.
but only help children living It says there needs to be a focus | :11:23. | :11:24.
on families where parents work, 33% of children here live | :11:25. | :11:29.
in poverty, We are talking about the triple | :11:30. | :11:46.
whammy effect in the report. Cuts in social security expenditure and cost | :11:47. | :11:50.
of living rising faster than anyone anticipated. All three factors | :11:51. | :11:55.
combine and make the Twenty20 target very challenging. | :11:56. | :11:58.
It's been another difficult day for the Liberal Democrats with the | :11:59. | :12:01.
But the party's leader in Wales has given party leader | :12:02. | :12:05.
Kirsty williams says despite the party's poor showing | :12:06. | :12:09.
in the European elections, he is the right person to lead the party | :12:10. | :12:12.
Our Political Reporter Bethan Lewis is here. | :12:13. | :12:16.
So Kirsty Williams is backing Nick Clegg then despite | :12:17. | :12:18.
Yes. A very difficult few days for Nick Clegg. A prominent party figure | :12:19. | :12:34.
has resigned from the party today and he said the party is heading for | :12:35. | :12:38.
disaster and Nick Clegg. When you have the election results of | :12:39. | :12:43.
course. Pretty poor across the UK and in Wales are very poor European | :12:44. | :12:48.
election result. The party came sixth with only 4% of the vote. So | :12:49. | :12:53.
weird to the Lib Dems and the Nick Clegg go from here? This to Williams | :12:54. | :12:58.
says she has exchanged texts with Nick Clegg and she says he is tired | :12:59. | :13:02.
and disappointed with the result but is adamant to carry on with his | :13:03. | :13:07.
work. She says there is work to be done and the results were bad and | :13:08. | :13:13.
the party needs more -- to do more to explain what the party is all | :13:14. | :13:24.
about. She says Nick Clegg is the person to make that change and lead | :13:25. | :13:29.
the party. I can not be any clear. Nick Clegg is the right person to | :13:30. | :13:33.
lead this party into a general election and what we need to do now | :13:34. | :13:38.
is to redouble our efforts and explain to the people of this | :13:39. | :13:41.
country wide we took the decision to go into coalition government, what | :13:42. | :13:45.
Lib Dems are achieving as part of that government. Fairly strong | :13:46. | :13:50.
backing from Kirsty Williams. Another Assembly Member Peter Black | :13:51. | :13:53.
has been far more critical of Nick Clegg and the party strategy in the | :13:54. | :13:58.
election. He did not call the Nick Clegg to stand down. So a lot of | :13:59. | :14:03.
soul-searching within the party ahead of those general elections | :14:04. | :14:04.
next year. And you can see more on that story | :14:05. | :14:08.
on The Wales Report at 10.35pm On day five of the Queen's Baton | :14:09. | :14:12.
relay, a bishop's blessing Its been confirmed in the last few | :14:13. | :14:19.
minutes that the Heritage Lottery Fund is to give nearly ?3 million | :14:20. | :14:33.
to safeguard the family home of the poet Hedd Wyn | :14:34. | :14:36.
near Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd. The farmhouse, Yr Ysgwrn, | :14:37. | :14:39.
has been welcoming visitors ever since Hedd Wyn's death in the | :14:40. | :14:41.
First World War, shortly before he was posthumously awarded the chair | :14:42. | :14:45.
at the 1917 National Eisteddfod. Two years ago the house was bought | :14:46. | :14:47.
from the poet's nephew by the Tucked under a hell I'll from | :14:48. | :15:08.
Trawsfynydd, this house remains as Hedd Wyn left it when he marched off | :15:09. | :15:13.
to fight in the First World War. I have tried to keep it exactly as it | :15:14. | :15:18.
was in 1917. The poets nephew still keeps an open door to visitors. | :15:19. | :15:25.
Gerald Williams learnt the story at his grandmother 's knee and he | :15:26. | :15:30.
passes it on to the 2000 people who come here every year. I try to tell | :15:31. | :15:33.
them all the stories and everything I know, everything my grandmother | :15:34. | :15:41.
used to tell me. I try to bring that back and ask them questions to find | :15:42. | :15:50.
out which way they are thinking and try to tell them how the family | :15:51. | :15:53.
lived. Today is the third -- visitors included the Davis family | :15:54. | :16:00.
from Swansea. It is kept as it was back then and it is an interest for | :16:01. | :16:06.
the family to see how things were such a long time ago. I have studied | :16:07. | :16:10.
a few of the poems for GCSEs so it's nice to learn about the history and | :16:11. | :16:18.
seen the area he was from. This house tells us money stories and not | :16:19. | :16:23.
just of Hedd Wyn and his poetry, it tells the story of all the men went | :16:24. | :16:27.
to fight in the First World War and who never came home. It also tells a | :16:28. | :16:32.
story of what life was like in rural Wales 100 years ago. Hedd Wyn died | :16:33. | :16:40.
in the mud of Flanders in the battle of Passchendaele. That same summer | :16:41. | :16:44.
he was announced as the winner of the chair at the Birkenhead | :16:45. | :16:48.
Eisteddfod. The chair can still be seen at the house. Today's project | :16:49. | :16:55.
will safeguard the house and its contents and also converted | :16:56. | :16:57.
outbuildings so they can be used to tell the story of this historic | :16:58. | :17:02.
site. We hope it will create an attraction which will be fantastic | :17:03. | :17:07.
for tourists and students. We hope it will draw a lot of economic | :17:08. | :17:11.
benefits to the area. It holds an important place in the history of | :17:12. | :17:15.
Wales that is recognised by this funding. Secure its backers say for | :17:16. | :17:19.
future generations. The Urdd Eisteddfod is half way | :17:20. | :17:23.
through its week long visit to Bala but the organisation has been | :17:24. | :17:26.
a permanent part of the town Generations of children have visited | :17:27. | :17:29.
the Urdd Glanllyn residential centre which is celebrating | :17:30. | :17:33.
its most successful year yet. The bunting is out in the high | :17:34. | :17:46.
Street which must symbolise the Urdd Eisteddfod has returned to its | :17:47. | :17:53.
spiritual home. Bala has a lot to celebrate. | :17:54. | :18:04.
These children are experiencing Welsh culture with a week at the | :18:05. | :18:09.
Glanllyn residential centre. They will experience at the activities | :18:10. | :18:15.
but these children are not even Welsh. They are some of the 30,000 | :18:16. | :18:20.
people love -- stayed here in the last year. It has been a thriving | :18:21. | :18:26.
centre for decades. I came here when I was 16. I met my wife here. I feel | :18:27. | :18:31.
I have more ownership over the Welsh language and culture and I think the | :18:32. | :18:36.
Urdd Eisteddfod has helped me with my career. I am deputy head here at | :18:37. | :18:43.
the centre. I used a volunteer here on weekends. Tens of thousands of | :18:44. | :18:47.
people will come through Bala this week but the surrounding area | :18:48. | :18:58.
benefits all year round. I have done to jobs there in the last few | :18:59. | :19:04.
years, building work. It has been very good for my company. It's been | :19:05. | :19:14.
a good opportunity to do big jobs. This is of the every step of 50 | :19:15. | :19:17.
years ago. It has grown up in many ways but its main goal remains to | :19:18. | :19:22.
develop children's appreciation of culture and language through | :19:23. | :19:36.
activity and performance. It is really portent in terms of the local | :19:37. | :19:41.
economy here but in many ways the economy across Wales. For me as well | :19:42. | :19:50.
in terms of activities, we are working with sport Wales and we are | :19:51. | :19:54.
getting 25,000 sport opportunities through that wonderful volunteer | :19:55. | :19:57.
workforce there Eisteddfod possesses. This weekend the pavilion | :19:58. | :20:02.
will be packed away ready to be moved to a new site next year but | :20:03. | :20:07.
Bala will continue to benefit even when the crowds are gone. | :20:08. | :20:14.
Glanllyn has been celebrating a successful first year of its | :20:15. | :20:17.
outreach programme so people don't just have to come to Bala to have | :20:18. | :20:21.
training in outdoor pursuits, staff can go across Wales to teach | :20:22. | :20:23.
children through the medium of Welsh. The message is spreading. | :20:24. | :20:32.

Cardiff City have signed Italian striker Federico Mackeda | :20:55. | :20:56.
The 22-year-old has a three year deal and will join the Bluebirds on | :20:57. | :21:00.
July 1st when his current contract with Manchester United expires. | :21:01. | :21:03.

The weather ruined Glamorgan 's push for victory in their championship | :21:07. | :21:23.
match against Leicestershire. Despite regular stoppages Glamorgan | :21:24. | :21:26.
got within two wickets victory as Leicestershire stumbled to 204th | :21:27. | :21:30.
eight in their second innings. When the rain intervened this evening the | :21:31. | :21:32.
match was called off at the draw. The Queen's baton relay has been | :21:33. | :21:37.
touring Pembrokeshire On its fifth day in Wales, | :21:38. | :21:39.
the baton started with a visit to St Davids Cathedral, where it was | :21:40. | :21:43.
given a special blessing, and then continued north, ending | :21:44. | :21:46.
today's journey in Machynlleth. Abigail Neal has been | :21:47. | :21:49.
following its progress. On a pilgrimage to Pembrokeshire. | :21:50. | :22:00.
The Queen's Baton arrived for a religious blessing. All may live in | :22:01. | :22:09.
peace and happiness, truth and prosperity through Jesus Christ, our | :22:10. | :22:16.
Lord. The idea of the Commonwealth in a world which is so fractured and | :22:17. | :22:22.
its advisers so long is remarkable. To be associated with something | :22:23. | :22:32.
weaves together nations is something great. The procession led through | :22:33. | :22:41.
the Cathedral, at the famous steps and into the town. Despite the cold | :22:42. | :22:48.
morning, there was a warm welcome. We went to see the Olympic torch in | :22:49. | :22:53.
Fishguard and we wanted to come and support Saint Davids for the | :22:54. | :22:57.
Commonwealth games. We have wonderful heritage in Saint Davids | :22:58. | :23:01.
and we just wanted to be part of the excitement. I think it's fantastic. | :23:02. | :23:08.
It gets the kids out to come and see it. After being blessed by Wales' | :23:09. | :23:17.
smallest city the Queen's Baton will now go up the coast before heading | :23:18. | :23:21.
to North Wales. Ceredigion was granted three stops along the way. | :23:22. | :23:25.
The crowded high Street in Cardigan followed by a tour around the | :23:26. | :23:30.
harbour in Aberaeron. Many of the bat and were children chosen for the | :23:31. | :23:37.
love of sport. You usually see boys playing on the football pitch but we | :23:38. | :23:43.
want girls to do it as well. I like doing running, mostly for all and | :23:44. | :23:50.
rugby. I am a member of Aberystwyth life-saving club, swim club, I do | :23:51. | :23:57.
gymnastics and kayaking and they do a number of sports and stuff like | :23:58. | :24:03.
that for my school. After a promenade along the beach-front at | :24:04. | :24:06.
Aberystwyth, it was onto Machynlleth for one last stop tonight as the | :24:07. | :24:10.
road to Glasgow grows ever closer. Well, it looks as | :24:11. | :24:14.
if the weather was fairly kind to How is the rest | :24:15. | :24:17.
of the week shaping up, Derek? Well, I wish I could promise clear | :24:18. | :24:26.
weather on the top of Snowdon As is often the case, it's likely to | :24:27. | :24:29.
be damp and foggy and chilly too. But during the day the weather | :24:30. | :24:35.
should improve as the baton travels down to Anglesey and it should be | :24:36. | :24:38.
dry when it reaches Caernarfon. Back to today and much of Britain | :24:39. | :24:41.
has been covered in cloud with some rain but | :24:42. | :24:44.
South West Wales faired better. Some mist and hill fog | :24:45. | :24:47.
and a mild night. Tomorrow's chart shows low pressure | :24:48. | :25:04.
over southern Britain So here's the picture for 8.00am | :25:05. | :25:09.
in the morning. Grey and damp in the north | :25:10. | :25:16.
and east and Powys. Murky too with low cloud, | :25:17. | :25:19.
mist and hill fog. The south | :25:20. | :25:22.
and west drier with the odd shower. During the afternoon it will slowly | :25:23. | :25:29.
brighten-up, especially in the south and west with a little | :25:30. | :25:33.
sunshine, but not dry everywhere. And if you catch one it could be | :25:34. | :25:36.
heavy with a risk of thunder. Generally, | :25:37. | :25:42.
a little warmer than today. Top temperatures around 14C to 17C | :25:43. | :25:44.
with a light to moderate breeze. If you're off to the Urdd Eisteddfod | :25:45. | :25:48.
in Bala, the morning will be dull, damp and misty but it should | :25:49. | :25:52.
improve during the afternoon. Tomorrow evening, | :25:53. | :25:56.
a few scattered showers. Overnight, most these will die | :25:57. | :25:59.
away with some mist and low cloud. Friday, it will gradually | :26:00. | :26:05.
brighten-up with some sunshine. Most places dry | :26:06. | :26:08.
but a few showers are likely. Most of these in the south | :26:09. | :26:11.
and southwest. Most places dry and settled | :26:12. | :26:19.
thanks to high pressure. I can't promise a clear, blue sky | :26:20. | :26:25.
but some sunshine and feeling So better weather on the way | :26:26. | :26:31.
