A father and his seven-year-old son have died after they were hit

by a car while crossing a road in South Wales.

It happened on a dual carriageway near Talbot Green,

in the early hours of this morning. Caroline Evans reports.

A single bunch of roses today marked the scene of the accident.

This busy road runs between the M4 and Talbot Green.

The father, who is said to have been 43, and his son were crossing

the southbound carriageway near to the entrance

of a furniture store when they were hit.

Bryan George, who lives close to the road,

said he had seen them with other members of their family walking

along and singing minutes before.

He believes they were trying to cross at this point because there

is a footpath here over the verge.

It is, he says, the latest in a series of tragedies

along this stretch of road.

Four years ago, there was a guy killed on a motorbike.

There has been numerous accidents.

Me and my wife, we were talking to a neighbour

earlier on and the amount of times we have run out with blankets

and towels and offered people coffee, do you know what I mean?

It has been waiting to happen and now it has happened.

Maybe now, they will do something about it, but it is much too late

for these guys, yeah?

Both father and son were taken to the nearby Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Police say the 22-year-old driver of the Alpha Romeo was arrested

at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.

The investigation into exactly what happened here is still ongoing.

Police are appealing for anyone who feels they may have information

that might help to come forward. Caroline Evans, BBC Wales.

Firefighters have been tackling a fire at a wood recycling centre

in Newport Docks. Around 20,000 tonnes of wood chippings

caught fire yesterday afternoon.

Residents have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

Power has been restored

in North Wales tonight, after high winds and flooding.

Engineers have worked all weekend to restore electricity,

after 700 homes lost power yesterday,

mainly in Conwy and Denbighshire.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed Powys says it is important

that smaller, regional sea ports are not overlooked,

as part of anti-terror plans. Police presence at UK ports

has been stepped up in the wake of events in Paris last month.

Following last month's terror attacks in Paris, the UK government

carried out a review of security at all ports.

But there is concern that, if too much attention is paid

to the larger cross-Channel ports, such as Dover,

there could be less focus elsewhere.

The Police and Crime Commisioner for Dyfed Powys

said it was important not to open the back door,

by closing the front door.

The port of Milford Haven is the largest in Wales

and is the largest energy port in the United Kingdom,

though there is no suggestion of a specific threat against it.

It is a site of critical national infrastructure

and it is guarded accordingly, so there are more than the usual

level of response officers there. There is a very particular plan

to policing it. It is something that I have discussed, particularly

recently, with the Chief Constable. He is obviously very aware

of the threat, as well.

As the RAF continues air strikes against the so-called

Islamic State in Syria, the former UK ambassador to NATO

and the United Nations, told BBC Wales that Russia

and the US had a responsibility to work together, but it was

unlikely that British soldiers would be sent to Syria.

Countries in the region will have to play a bigger part.

What I would look for, if there was going to be an internationalisation

of it, would be that, if there is a peace agreement,

if conditions are sufficiently in place, that the United Nations

might deploy peacekeepers, but that is a long way down the road.

The bombing campaign against IS in Syria has only just begun

and, clearly, has a long way to go.

Rugby now and the Dragons have earned a shock 22-6 Pro12 win

over Munster at Rodney Parade. Captain Rynard Landman scored

the game's only try late on. Meanwhile, Justin Tipuric scored

two of the Ospreys' five tries, in their 39-22 away win to Zebre.

A look at the weather forecast now and patchy rain will clear away

north through tomorrow morning, allowing it to turn dry and sunny

for a time, before further heavy rain arrives during the evening.

It will be another mild day and winds will continue to strengthen,

with a top temperature 15 Celsius.
