Now it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories: | :00:08. | :00:09.
Hundreds of steel jobs are set to go across the country. | :00:10. | :00:11.
BBC Wales understands details will be made public next week. | :00:12. | :00:14.
And the Education Minister Huw Lewis has announced he'll be standing down | :00:15. | :00:17.
from the Assembly at May's elections. | :00:18. | :00:33.
For weeks, there have been fears for the Welsh steel industry, | :00:34. | :00:37.
and tonight, BBC Wales understands Tata, which employs 6,000 | :00:38. | :00:40.
steelworkers here, is expected to announce hundreds of job | :00:41. | :00:43.
Most of those posts are expected to go at the firm's | :00:44. | :00:48.
Cemlyn Davies has this exclusive report. | :00:49. | :00:54.
The British steel industry is in crisis. | :00:55. | :00:57.
In recent months, thousands of steelworkers have lost their jobs | :00:58. | :00:59.
in Scotland and the North of England. | :01:00. | :01:02.
And the focus is now on Wales and Port Talbot, | :01:03. | :01:05.
where Tata Steel employs thousands of people. | :01:06. | :01:08.
The plant is reported to be losing ?1 million a day, | :01:09. | :01:11.
and BBC Wales has been told that an announcement on job losses | :01:12. | :01:14.
here and across Wales could be made as early as next week. | :01:15. | :01:19.
The number of jobs axed is expected to be in the high hundreds, | :01:20. | :01:22.
Anthony Taylor is a local councillor who spent 44 years working | :01:23. | :01:27.
It is a blow for me as a person, because it's an emotional thing. | :01:28. | :01:34.
At the plant for 44 years, you become attached to the people, | :01:35. | :01:36.
But it's a bigger blow to the community when it comes. | :01:37. | :01:42.
It goes without saying that Tata is the biggest employer | :01:43. | :01:44.
Everyone, it seems, knows someone employed at the steelworks, | :01:45. | :01:48.
and people here tell me that the plant does much more | :01:49. | :01:51.
Tata Steel says any announcement will be made to its workforce first. | :01:52. | :02:00.
But local politicians are already braced for bad news. | :02:01. | :02:04.
The steel industry has to restructure. | :02:05. | :02:05.
It has to look at cutting some of its costs. | :02:06. | :02:08.
I am absolutely convinced that with the trade unions | :02:09. | :02:12.
and the Government and Tata Steel working constructively | :02:13. | :02:16.
in partnership with each other, we can weather this storm. | :02:17. | :02:20.
We can ride it out and we can actually come back stronger. | :02:21. | :02:23.
With other sites in Newport, Llanwern. | :02:24. | :02:24.
Tata employees a total of 6000 people across Wales. | :02:25. | :02:30.
But the vast majority - around 4000 workers - | :02:31. | :02:33.
The Economy Minister met with company bosses on a prearranged | :02:34. | :02:39.
visit to Deeside this morning, but wouldn't be drawn | :02:40. | :02:42.
If anything official comes from the company... | :02:43. | :02:47.
There are so many rumours about the steel industry | :02:48. | :02:51.
and to comment on anything, it wouldn't be right. | :02:52. | :02:53.
It would be unfair, because if there are any issues | :02:54. | :02:55.
around jobs, I'm sure the company will be wanting to deal | :02:56. | :02:58.
Unions say they are broadly satisfied with the Welsh | :02:59. | :03:01.
Government's attempts to protect steelworkers, | :03:02. | :03:04.
but they are frustrated with the lack of action | :03:05. | :03:06.
The UK Government told us it has been proactive in helping the steel | :03:07. | :03:11.
industry by cutting energy costs and taking action on | :03:12. | :03:14.
But it seems that simply hasn't been enough to protect Welsh | :03:15. | :03:20.
steelworkers, whose future this evening is more uncertain than ever. | :03:21. | :03:27.
And we'll bring you any updates on this story over the weekend, | :03:28. | :03:29.
including a special report on Sunday Politics Wales. | :03:30. | :03:32.
That's this Sunday morning at 11am, here on BBC One Wales. | :03:33. | :03:38.
A 53-year-old man has appeared before magistrates in Newport, | :03:39. | :03:41.
charged with the murder of a woman in Monmouthshire. | :03:42. | :03:44.
The body of 25-year-old Georgina Symonds was found | :03:45. | :03:46.
Peter Morgan, who's from Abergavenny, was remanded | :03:47. | :03:51.
in custody until his next court appearance on Monday. | :03:52. | :03:56.
North Wales Police are treating the death of a man in Rhyl | :03:57. | :03:59.
as suspicious after significant concerns were raised | :04:00. | :04:01.
The body of 44-year-old Liam James Hill was found | :04:02. | :04:06.
in his flat on the West Parade last Friday. | :04:07. | :04:09.
Officers are now appealing for information to help establish | :04:10. | :04:12.
Mr Hill's movements before his death. | :04:13. | :04:16.
The Education Minister Huw Lewis has announced he'll be standing down | :04:17. | :04:19.
Mr Lewis has been AM for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney | :04:20. | :04:24.
since the first Assembly elections in 1999. | :04:25. | :04:27.
Our political reporter, Bethan Lewis, joins me now. | :04:28. | :04:31.
Bethan, what's behind his decision to stand down? | :04:32. | :04:37.
He said in a statement tonight that it is time to move on for him and | :04:38. | :04:45.
his constituency after 17 years in Cardiff Bay. He says he's looking | :04:46. | :04:49.
forward to seeking out new opportunities, challenges and | :04:50. | :04:52.
spending more time with his family. He is a former teacher. He has been | :04:53. | :04:57.
education minister for over two years. A high profile and | :04:58. | :05:02.
contentious portfolio. Before that, he was culture minister and | :05:03. | :05:05.
communities and communities and tackling poverty minister as well. | :05:06. | :05:08.
But the night, the First Minister, who he stood against in the Labour | :05:09. | :05:18.
leadership contest in 2009, says he praises him for his passion and says | :05:19. | :05:21.
he will be sorely missed. And he is in fact going to join several other | :05:22. | :05:28.
Labour AMs who are standing down. Yes, he is the second Cabinet | :05:29. | :05:35.
banister to stand down. Huw Lewis is the latest of ten Labour AMs to say | :05:36. | :05:39.
they will be standing in made's elections. That is a third of the | :05:40. | :05:46.
whole Labour group. Some AMs from other parties as well. Whatever the | :05:47. | :05:50.
result in May, the Assembly will look pretty different. A new | :05:51. | :05:54.
candidate will have to be chosen and it is a pretty safe Labour seat, so | :05:55. | :05:58.
there is likely to be a lot of competition for that. Thank you. | :05:59. | :06:01.
Doubts have been raised about some of the engineering behind Swansea's | :06:02. | :06:04.
Several experts have told BBC Wales the design could generate less | :06:05. | :06:07.
energy than the company behind it claims. | :06:08. | :06:09.
It comes after the Prime Minister admitted his enthusiasm | :06:10. | :06:12.
for the project has reduced, as the UK Government tries | :06:13. | :06:15.
I did question back in 2010 whether it would be better | :06:16. | :06:23.
to reorientate those turbines so that the wake was parallel | :06:24. | :06:25.
to the mouth coming out OF here, and sending the wake right out | :06:26. | :06:29.
So I hope that if this scheme goes ahead, and I hope it does, | :06:30. | :06:35.
that we can try to reconsider some aspects of the design, | :06:36. | :06:40.
which I think at the moment, could be improved. | :06:41. | :06:44.
The developer, Tidal Lagoon Power, says questions on the engineering | :06:45. | :06:48.
and environmental impact of the project have been addressed. | :06:49. | :06:56.
Rugby, and the Ospreys' chances of reaching the knockout stages | :06:57. | :06:58.
of the European Champions Cup were boosted after they beat | :06:59. | :07:00.
Clermont Auvergne 21-13 at the Liberty Stadium tonight. | :07:01. | :07:04.
The goal kicking of Dan Biggar and Sam Davies secured the points | :07:05. | :07:08.
for the Ospreys, who can win a place in the next round if the defeat | :07:09. | :07:12.
Elsewhere, the Dragons beat Castres 31-18 in the Challenge Cup. | :07:13. | :07:20.
Winger Ashton Hewitt's try just before full time secured the Welsh | :07:21. | :07:24.
The Dragons stay two points clear at the top of pool two. | :07:25. | :07:31.
In football, Cardiff City won't be able to sign new players this month. | :07:32. | :07:34.
They've been placed under a transfer embargo by the Football League | :07:35. | :07:37.
after breaching financial fair play rules. | :07:38. | :07:40.
It's thought the breach relates to Cardiff's debts. | :07:41. | :07:42.
It's the second time in six years that Cardiff have had | :07:43. | :07:47.
Let's see what the weather has in store for the weekend. | :07:48. | :07:54.
Hello. Keep the winter woollies handy. It will stay cold this | :07:55. | :08:07.
weekend. I can promise some dry weather. Some sunshine and a lighter | :08:08. | :08:11.
winds. It might not be dry everywhere through the weekend. This | :08:12. | :08:17.
evening, some wintry showers. Some showers in Pembrokeshire tonight. | :08:18. | :08:21.
Elsewhere, dried, clear starry skies and a widespread frost. Temperatures | :08:22. | :08:28.
could fall as low as minus eight Celsius. Once again, ice would be a | :08:29. | :08:33.
hazard and a Met Office warning is in force. A cold, frosty start for | :08:34. | :08:38.
much of Wales tomorrow. But bright and crisp with plenty of sunshine. | :08:39. | :08:43.
But some showers in the south-west. Across the rest of the UK, watch out | :08:44. | :08:48.
for icy patches when travelling. Wintry showers will affect the | :08:49. | :08:51.
eastern coast was otherwise, most places bright with some winter | :08:52. | :08:57.
sunshine. Cloud will bring rain and snow to the north-west later in the | :08:58. | :09:02.
afternoon. Only one Celsius tomorrow in Glasgow. Tomorrow afternoon, many | :09:03. | :09:07.
places dry, bright and crisp with sunshine. The odd shower lingering | :09:08. | :09:12.
in the West. Temperatures only cold to say, especially on higher ground. | :09:13. | :09:19.
Seven Celsius. Tomorrow evening, some frost. Cloud increasing | :09:20. | :09:25.
overnight. That may bring rain or snow to North Wales. Further south | :09:26. | :09:30.
will remain dry and frosty. On Sunday, some patchy rain and snow in | :09:31. | :09:36.
mid, north and East Wales. A freshening wind in the West. Into | :09:37. | :09:41.
next week, signs of a change. Some rain on the way and a little snow in | :09:42. | :09:46.
places. It may turn milder by the middle of the week. But a lot of | :09:47. | :09:49.
uncertainty. Have a nice weekend. There's news, sport, | :09:50. | :09:51.
travel and weather throughout the weekend on BBC Radio Wales, | :09:52. | :09:54.
Radio Cymru and online. We're back at 5:50pm tomorrow | :09:55. | :09:56.
evening. For now, from all of us | :09:57. | :09:58.
on the late team, goodnight. | :09:59. | :10:03. |
