Cardiff University scientists are celebrating their part

:00:00.:00:00.

in the detection of gravitational waves, described as one

:00:00.:00:07.

of the greatest breakthroughs in physics for a century.

:00:08.:00:13.

More than ?7 million for Toyota on Deeside.

:00:14.:00:15.

As hundreds of jobs are secured, we look how the industry here can

:00:16.:00:18.

The number ten is named in the team to face Scotland.

:00:19.:00:40.

It has been described as the one of the greatest breakthroughs

:00:41.:00:45.

in physics for a century, transforming our understanding

:00:46.:00:47.

Scientists at Cardiff University have played a key role

:00:48.:00:59.

in the detection of gravitational waves,

:01:00.:01:01.

invisible ripples in the fabric of space.

:01:02.:01:02.

A huge experiment in the United States had been searching

:01:03.:01:05.

for them for decades, but it was here in Wales that most

:01:06.:01:08.

of the data was processed and verified.

:01:09.:01:09.

This gathering of physicists in Cardiff, one of several taking

:01:10.:01:19.

place around the world this afternoon.

:01:20.:01:24.

First, via video-link, they heard from Washington.

:01:25.:01:27.

We have detected gravitational waves.

:01:28.:01:30.

The focal point of an international search for one of the universe's

:01:31.:01:36.

First predicted by Einstein 100 years ago,

:01:37.:01:43.

gravitational waves are pulses sent out when big things happen

:01:44.:01:46.

Black holes colliding, for example, or the deaths of giant stars.

:01:47.:01:53.

They would offer us a glimpse of the furthest and oldest reaches

:01:54.:01:56.

Studying them could help answer age-old questions like how

:01:57.:01:59.

So, for decades, a huge experiment in the US has been trying to detect

:02:00.:02:09.

them, involving some 900 scientists worldwide.

:02:10.:02:15.

Closer to home, the role a team of researchers in Cardiff had

:02:16.:02:18.

Our specialty is in modelling the signals that would come

:02:19.:02:25.

from the collision of black holes and sifting through the data

:02:26.:02:27.

Sensitive detectors in the US, two-miles long, were used to pick up

:02:28.:02:40.

the signals from space, but it was super computers

:02:41.:02:42.

in Cardiff that helped process the data and ultimately verify that

:02:43.:02:45.

The team had been working for over a decade, calculating computer

:02:46.:02:49.

simulations of what they expected to see.

:02:50.:02:55.

A lot of the analysis was actually done on the computers.

:02:56.:02:58.

Now I get to tell people about it, it starts to feel real

:02:59.:03:01.

Scientists say being able to detect gravitational waves will usher

:03:02.:03:05.

No longer will they have to rely on telescopes like this one to see

:03:06.:03:11.

There is another side of the universe.

:03:12.:03:17.

The universe that produces sounds and that is what we are doing

:03:18.:03:20.

It allows us to listen to the universe in a way that has

:03:21.:03:25.

So here it is, the sound of a gravitational wave sent out

:03:26.:03:31.

as two black holes collided a billion light-years from Earth.

:03:32.:03:36.

It is an echo from the distant past, a fingerprint from the most powerful

:03:37.:03:39.

Actually seeing exactly the signal we had been calculating

:03:40.:03:45.

come out of the data, that was incredible.

:03:46.:04:03.

Scientists say proving these waves exist is just the beginning.

:04:04.:04:05.

It opens up a new window on the universe and we are now

:04:06.:04:09.

in a position to start looking through it.

:04:10.:04:11.

An inquest into the death of Cheryl James has heard how

:04:12.:04:13.

the army recruit from Llangollen had made comments about shooting herself

:04:14.:04:16.

Private James was found dead with a bullet wound to her head

:04:17.:04:20.

at Deepcut Barracks in 1995, amid claims of bullying.

:04:21.:04:22.

A fellow recruit at the army training base told the inquest that

:04:23.:04:25.

Private James had joked about killing herself.

:04:26.:04:27.

Another described Deepcut as a "prison camp".

:04:28.:04:28.

Ten Welsh courts will close because of cuts

:04:29.:04:38.

Brecon, Bridgend, Neath, Pontypridd and Wrexham courts

:04:39.:04:42.

Dolgellau, Holyhead and Llangefni will close

:04:43.:04:47.

Although the Guildhall in Carmarthen will close,

:04:48.:04:53.

the family and civil court will stay open.

:04:54.:04:56.

Unions warn the closures will "seriously undermine" public

:04:57.:04:58.

The Toyota engine plant on Deeside has won a ?7 million investment.

:04:59.:05:07.

It's 540 workers will make the next generation of hybrid engines.

:05:08.:05:13.

Here's our Economics Correspondent Sarah Dickins.

:05:14.:05:18.

Engines of the future on the production line today

:05:19.:05:23.

but the new generation engines will be in mass production

:05:24.:05:25.

The plant won the ?7 million investment because it has proved

:05:26.:05:33.

to its bosses in Japan how competitive it is.

:05:34.:05:39.

This announcement is a financial investment but also

:05:40.:05:42.

In the recession, workers here took a pay cut and it paid off.

:05:43.:05:50.

The Welsh government has given a grant of ?700,000 and the minister

:05:51.:05:53.

Here, they are helping a company in Ammanford design more

:05:54.:06:00.

For companies in this line of business, the secret is to be

:06:01.:06:05.

This company has designed and made this machine.

:06:06.:06:17.

It will go up the Heads of the Valleys Road to Tredegar

:06:18.:06:20.

This company has been so busy in the last 18 months that it's

:06:21.:06:25.

There is a lot of new innovation in this sector at the moment.

:06:26.:06:30.

New technologies which might mean new materials, combining things

:06:31.:06:32.

The Ford engine plant has been part of the Welsh economy

:06:33.:06:36.

It has won investment for a new generation of engines.

:06:37.:06:43.

But this year loses the contract to make engines for Jaguar Land

:06:44.:06:46.

Across Wales, the automotive sector employs around 18,000 people.

:06:47.:06:53.

There turnover is around ?3.3 billion a year.

:06:54.:07:00.

The new engines that will be made on the site will be going into cars

:07:01.:07:03.

Assembling whole vehicles has the greatest impact on economies

:07:04.:07:09.

but Wales has developed a good reputation for making engines

:07:10.:07:12.

The Health Minister, Mark Drakeford, has said the UK government's

:07:13.:07:20.

decision to impose a new contract on junior doctors in England

:07:21.:07:22.

is foolish, and damaging for patients.

:07:23.:07:24.

A final offer to unions was rejected earlier this afternoon.

:07:25.:07:26.

Mark Drakeford said junior doctors would be respected

:07:27.:07:28.

We will proceed by discussion and negotiation.

:07:29.:07:39.

That's why we have had no strikes in Wales.

:07:40.:07:42.

That's how I want things to continue.

:07:43.:07:44.

We will have negotiations with our junior doctors in Wales

:07:45.:07:46.

now that the Secretary of State has made what I regard as a foolish

:07:47.:07:50.

decision and one that is likely to be damaging to patients.

:07:51.:07:53.

We won't want to see that happening in Wales.

:07:54.:07:55.

We will continue along the path we have already set ourselves on.

:07:56.:07:58.

A petition calling for Nathan Gill to stand down as Ukip Wales leader

:07:59.:08:01.

has been submitted to the party's ruling body.

:08:02.:08:03.

Six of the 26 signatories stood for the party at last

:08:04.:08:06.

Ukip has questioned the petition's credibility and says Mr Gill

:08:07.:08:12.

In terms of leadership, he has shown a distinct lack

:08:13.:08:20.

People have no idea what is going on.

:08:21.:08:24.

There has been no coherent policy in terms of a strategy

:08:25.:08:27.

for the election and we are really concerned now because we have got

:08:28.:08:30.

literally months to go and the election will be upon us

:08:31.:08:33.

We neededecisive leadership in Wales.

:08:34.:08:38.

Production is back to normal at the Tata steel plant

:08:39.:08:40.

in Port Talbot after a fire, thought to be caused

:08:41.:08:43.

Nobody was injured in the fire in the plant's coke ovens.

:08:44.:08:46.

Mid and West Wales crews were called to the site after 8am this morning

:08:47.:08:50.

It has been described by Wales Coach Warren Gatland

:08:51.:08:55.

The coaching team initially feared Dan Biggar could be out for as many

:08:56.:09:00.

But despite injuring his ankle in Dublin last weekend,

:09:01.:09:03.

the outside half is part of an unchanged team

:09:04.:09:05.

with Gareth Anscombe replacing Alex Cuthbert on the bench.

:09:06.:09:10.

A sighting of the man nicknamed Lazarus by his team-mates.

:09:11.:09:20.

The limp was gone and Dan Biggar entrusted with the number ten

:09:21.:09:23.

He got through training today and looked sharp so he has worked

:09:24.:09:33.

really hard in terms of his recovery and stuff and he has made

:09:34.:09:37.

So there are no changes to the team that drew with Ireland in Dublin.

:09:38.:09:41.

The scrum was solid and Rob Evans will start again, keeping

:09:42.:09:43.

Both locks keep hold of their jerseys as expected and,

:09:44.:09:47.

despite speculation Dan Lydiate may return, it is the same back row

:09:48.:09:51.

with two specialised sevens in Justin Tipuric and Sam Warburton.

:09:52.:09:55.

Wales may be preparing for a fast and open game

:09:56.:10:00.

at the Principality Stadium which will have the roof closed

:10:01.:10:02.

I don't know whether the selection totally reflects that

:10:03.:10:09.

because Dan Lydiate brings a lot but you can probably pick any

:10:10.:10:12.

combination of three and it will still work.

:10:13.:10:15.

I think we are in a very fortunate situation that we have got a quality

:10:16.:10:18.

Gareth Davies will start again at nine alongside Dan Biggar

:10:19.:10:24.

and at centre Jon Davies prepares to win his 50th cap,

:10:25.:10:26.

playing next to Jamie Roberts who impressed on the opening weekend.

:10:27.:10:31.

Liam Williams, who was brought in late for the Dublin match,

:10:32.:10:33.

Alex Cuthbert loses out completely as Gareth Anscombe steps back

:10:34.:10:39.

Scotland have made one forced change to the team that lost to England

:10:40.:10:48.

on the weekend as Duncan Taylor comes in for injured

:10:49.:10:50.

They're an improving side but Scotland have not won

:10:51.:10:56.

It is a good record and it comes with a bit of pressure.

:10:57.:11:00.

We have got to make sure we don't slip up and we are

:11:01.:11:03.

The Scottish team in the Pro12 are getting better all the time

:11:04.:11:08.

and that is going to help their national team.

:11:09.:11:10.

As they showed in the World Cup, they are a very good team.

:11:11.:11:13.

Warren Gatland has never lost to Scotland as coach of Wales

:11:14.:11:16.

and he will be hoping that record still stands after this weekend.

:11:17.:11:24.

In the rugby Pro12 the Newport Gwent Dragons lost after Connacht's late

:11:25.:11:26.

surge means they are now top of the league.

:11:27.:11:29.

The Dragons remain tenth in the table.

:11:30.:11:31.

It is looking pretty cold. We have got some showers to deal with and a

:11:32.:11:44.

lot more cloud around tomorrow compared with today as well.

:11:45.:11:48.

Tonight, we have some cloud around, but breaks in the cloud and where

:11:49.:11:52.

the cloud does break, we will see mist and frosty patches forming and

:11:53.:11:56.

also a few showers scattered around as well. Temp tufrs getting down to

:11:57.:12:00.

one Celsius. Tomorrow, low pressure nearby. It is another fairly

:12:01.:12:04.

unsettled day. A chilly start to our Friday morning. We have more showers

:12:05.:12:09.

scattered around, but also some drier interludes. Less sunshine

:12:10.:12:13.

around compared with today, with the best of the brightness across

:12:14.:12:23.

Gwynedd. A lot of dry weather with more showers along the South Coast

:12:24.:12:26.

and for Northern Ireland as well. Here in Wales, tomorrow afternoon,

:12:27.:12:32.

yes there will be quite a bit of dry weather, but some showers. It is

:12:33.:12:40.

feeling cold out there. Temperatures between six and seven Celsius.

:12:41.:12:43.

Overnight, we will start to see the winds pick up and rain coming into

:12:44.:12:47.

Pembrokeshire and Swansea and parts of mid-Wales. It could be wintry on

:12:48.:12:52.

higher ground. North Wales escaping the worst of the rain. So Saturday,

:12:53.:12:57.

a little bit of that rain still lingering across the South East. It

:12:58.:13:00.

will clear. We have got brisk winds. That's making it feel raw. Quite a

:13:01.:13:05.

bit of cloud around. Feeling chilly, temperatures three to five Celsius.

:13:06.:13:08.

Sunday the better day of the weekend in term of brightness. Still a few

:13:09.:13:13.

showers, but a bit of dry weather to look forward to and we can look

:13:14.:13:15.

forward to cold, but sunny weather for the start of next week. Back

:13:16.:13:19.

Toulousy. Benny, thank you very much.

:13:20.:13:20.
