Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories?

:00:07.:00:08.

Welsh Tory leader Andrew RT Davies says

:00:09.:00:09.

David Cameron's EU deal was not "robust" enough for him to vote

:00:10.:00:12.

And 600 pupils, parents and teachers protest against plans

:00:13.:00:17.

Good evening. The leader of the Welsh

:00:18.:00:41.

Conservatives says David Cameron's deal was not "robust" enough

:00:42.:00:43.

to convince him to vote to remain in the European Union.

:00:44.:00:45.

Andrew RT Davies has been setting out his reasons for his decision

:00:46.:00:48.

to vote to leave the EU at the referendum on June 23.

:00:49.:00:51.

But he says his first priority is trying to win the Assembly

:00:52.:00:54.

Our Political Correspondent Daniel Davies has the story.

:00:55.:01:05.

The most important election in a generation, he says.

:01:06.:01:10.

But this morning's questions were all about another vote.

:01:11.:01:13.

Politicians around here, including Andrew RT Davies,

:01:14.:01:15.

would rather the EU referendum was happening later

:01:16.:01:17.

The Assembly election would be overshadowed

:01:18.:01:25.

At that election, the Tories hope to kick Labour out of office

:01:26.:01:32.

and occupy the corridors of power in the Welsh government

:01:33.:01:34.

Between now and the Assembly election, your opponents will use

:01:35.:01:42.

every opportunity to remind voters that, on Wales' place in Europe,

:01:43.:01:44.

Is that going to damage your Assembly election campaign?

:01:45.:01:51.

At the end of the day, the Conservatives

:01:52.:01:55.

My vote, David Cameron's vote, is worth

:01:56.:01:58.

no more than your vote, than the lady or gentleman walking

:01:59.:02:02.

outside this building, than the lady or gentleman

:02:03.:02:04.

in Cardiff, Wrexham, Mold - the length and breadth of Wales

:02:05.:02:07.

The Tories united in celebration after last year's

:02:08.:02:13.

general election, but now they are divided over Europe.

:02:14.:02:18.

Had Mr Davies discussed his views with the Prime Minister?

:02:19.:02:21.

Whatever those decision are taken, I will stand by them.

:02:22.:02:28.

Mr Davies is one of three Conservative AMs

:02:29.:02:30.

who have said they will vote to leave.

:02:31.:02:44.

Three more have confirmed that they are on the remaining side.

:02:45.:02:47.

The other eight either haven't decided or are not saying.

:02:48.:02:49.

At the end of the day you have to decide what do you think

:02:50.:02:54.

is in the best interest of your constituency,

:02:55.:02:56.

your country and I've decided that I think we should go

:02:57.:02:59.

I think it is a good deal for Britain.

:03:00.:03:02.

Mr Davies says he would fight for ways

:03:03.:03:04.

to get money from Westminster if funding was cut

:03:05.:03:06.

He paid tribute to the Prime Minister for negotiating hard

:03:07.:03:10.

on EU reform but in the end the deal on offer wasn't robust enough

:03:11.:03:14.

so he is following his instincts and voting to leave.

:03:15.:03:17.

Some of Wales' largest companies, employing over 14,000 people,

:03:18.:03:19.

are calling for the UK to remain part of the European Union.

:03:20.:03:22.

BT, HSBC, Airbus and Ford are among those who have told BBC Wales that

:03:23.:03:25.

jobs and growth will be better served by being in the EU.

:03:26.:03:32.

Those campaigning for us to leave the EU say trade will continue,

:03:33.:03:35.

An ex-Scoutmaster jailed for 12 years in 2014 for abusing boys

:03:36.:03:46.

was back in court today, where he admitted to charges

:03:47.:03:48.

Martyn Tucker pleaded guilty at Caernarfon Crown Court to 28

:03:49.:03:56.

offences of indecent assault, spanning an 18-year period.

:03:57.:04:03.

Conwy Council is to run a trial collecting refuse bins

:04:04.:04:05.

But the pilot will only happen in one area, rather than throughout

:04:06.:04:09.

Hundreds of people have signed petitions opposing the plans

:04:10.:04:13.

which were being introduced by the council in a bid to reduce

:04:14.:04:16.

the costs of sending waste to landfill and to

:04:17.:04:18.

More than 600 schoolchildren, parents and teachers have been

:04:19.:04:28.

protesting at plans to re-organise secondary education in Powys.

:04:29.:04:33.

The council wants to close Llandrindod and Builth Wells High

:04:34.:04:36.

School and build a new school in Builth Wells.

:04:37.:04:38.

It also wants to replace two schools in Brecon

:04:39.:04:40.

The Cabinet has voted for a full consultation to be carried out.

:04:41.:04:48.

Rather than double maths it was a silent demonstration

:04:49.:04:56.

They were protesting against Powys Council's shake up

:04:57.:04:59.

Llandrindod and Builth Wales High School and a new school being built

:05:00.:05:05.

A petition with more than 1,300 signatures on it was handed

:05:06.:05:09.

What I'm particularly concerned about is the impact

:05:10.:05:16.

At the moment there are three schools in special measures in this

:05:17.:05:21.

Indeed, I haven't got a problem with that.

:05:22.:05:25.

What I have got a problem with is the school being sited

:05:26.:05:28.

The impact on this town and the students who are here

:05:29.:05:31.

would be highly negative, in my opinion.

:05:32.:05:33.

Over 600 pupils, teachers and parents have turned up here

:05:34.:05:36.

this morning to protest and handing in a petition

:05:37.:05:38.

This the secondary school here for well over 50 years

:05:39.:05:43.

and these people don't want to lose it.

:05:44.:05:56.

Llandrindod Wells is a small-town of a

:05:57.:05:58.

population of just under 6,000 people.

:05:59.:06:00.

If it even didn't have a high school here how is that town

:06:01.:06:03.

If it goes it'll be a great loss to the community.

:06:04.:06:06.

It is a major thing in the town and I

:06:07.:06:09.

feel very passionate about it and so do other people.

:06:10.:06:11.

At a packed meeting, councillors approved

:06:12.:06:13.

on a merger of Llandrindod and Builth Wellss high schools,

:06:14.:06:19.

as well as a consultation on the closure of Brecon High

:06:20.:06:22.

and Gwernyfed school, to establish a new English medium

:06:23.:06:24.

The council says with three schools in special measures and pupil

:06:25.:06:28.

numbers dropping by around 800 in four years they had

:06:29.:06:30.

We can't offer a sustainable curriculum and a satisfactory

:06:31.:06:35.

The consultation will start in September, but these pupils

:06:36.:06:42.

protesting already fear this could be beginning of the end

:06:43.:06:44.

Former Conservative MP Neil Hamilton has described a campaign

:06:45.:06:50.

against his bid to stand as an Assembly Member for UKIP

:06:51.:06:52.

as a "cancer that needs to be cleansed".

:06:53.:06:56.

UKIP has launched an investigation, after an anonymous leaflet

:06:57.:06:58.

criticising Mr Hamilton was sent to party members.

:06:59.:07:00.

It describes him as being "parachuted in" -

:07:01.:07:02.

I was born in Wales, I grew up in Wales, I was educated

:07:03.:07:15.

in Wales, both at school and at university.

:07:16.:07:17.

My father was the chief engineer for the Coal Board in Wales.

:07:18.:07:20.

He had an office just across the water there

:07:21.:07:22.

in the early 1970s, before he retired.

:07:23.:07:24.

I am just as Welsh now as I was then.

:07:25.:07:32.

Rugby now and Warren Gatland has made three changes to the Welsh team

:07:33.:07:35.

that will face France at the Principality Stadium

:07:36.:07:37.

Alex Cuthbert will start on the wing, as Dan Lydiate gets

:07:38.:07:44.

Second row Bradley Davies will get his chance in light

:07:45.:07:47.

Two football results for you tonight.

:07:48.:07:52.

Cardiff lost 3-1 to Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

:07:53.:07:55.

Wrexham moved into the play-off places in the National League

:07:56.:07:57.

after securing their third successive win, with a 2-0 victory

:07:58.:07:59.

over struggling Kidderminster Harriers.

:08:00.:08:08.

A lovely dry day for many of us today.

:08:09.:08:10.

What about tomorrow? Derek's got the forecast.

:08:11.:08:16.

Good evening. Cold And frosty today. Tomorrow, more dry weather and

:08:17.:08:32.

winter sunshine. A widespread frost overnight. You can see the planet

:08:33.:08:38.

Jupiter just to the left of the moon. Overnight temperatures down

:08:39.:08:46.

below zero. He cold frost first thing tomorrow. Across the rest of

:08:47.:08:55.

the United Kingdom, a frosty start for much of the country, especially

:08:56.:09:03.

in Scotland. A few showers in Northern Ireland, with wintry

:09:04.:09:09.

showers in the north of Scotland. Only four Celsius in Edinburgh,

:09:10.:09:19.

double that in London. Dry and sunny spells for us tomorrow. Temperatures

:09:20.:09:24.

are little lower than today, 6-7dC. A few showers tomorrow night, wintry

:09:25.:09:32.

and poisons. Again, some frost overnight once again. On Thursday,

:09:33.:09:38.

more cloud alone. Still some dry and great weather. On Friday, still some

:09:39.:09:45.

uncertainty, with the chance of a little rain. Looking mostly dry over

:09:46.:09:49.

the weekend, but very cold. That is Wales Today.

:09:50.:09:54.

Thank you for watching. From all of us on the

:09:55.:09:56.

programme, goodnight.
