Tonight's headlines: These children get specialist help for their autism | :00:00. | :00:08.
but after concern services here are "patchy" the Welsh | :00:09. | :00:11.
Government draws up a new national plan. | :00:12. | :00:16.
And the creator of SuperTed criticises the red tape he says | :00:17. | :00:19.
is holding back the Welsh film industry. | :00:20. | :00:36.
A national plan to make sure children and adults with autism | :00:37. | :00:43.
in Wales get consistent support, regardless of where they | :00:44. | :00:45.
It follows concerns that services across the country are "patchy". | :00:46. | :00:50.
Our health correspondent, Owain Clarke has the details. | :00:51. | :00:55.
How many words beginning with TH can you think of in a minute? | :00:56. | :01:02.
That's the challenge for these pupils in Merthyr. | :01:03. | :01:05.
Could you write then underneath for me? | :01:06. | :01:14.
But each of the children at the school has autism, | :01:15. | :01:16.
a condition that affects how they see the world and interact | :01:17. | :01:19.
It is quite different to a mainstream classroom, | :01:20. | :01:22.
mainly because distractions are kept to a minimum in the classroom. | :01:23. | :01:29.
There are other strategies like visual timetables, | :01:30. | :01:32.
which helps them deal with transition during the day | :01:33. | :01:36.
so that when they move through activities they know | :01:37. | :01:39.
what is going to happen next and they are prepared. | :01:40. | :01:43.
Wales was the first country in the UK to introduce a national | :01:44. | :01:46.
autism plan six years ago, raising awareness of the condition | :01:47. | :01:48.
and forcing councils to develop services. | :01:49. | :01:51.
Some children still have to wait too long for diagnosis. | :01:52. | :01:56.
Guidelines say it should happen within three months. | :01:57. | :01:58.
Charities claim some wait up to seven years. | :01:59. | :02:03.
People don't recognise autism is a condition in itself | :02:04. | :02:06.
and they are often bandied back and forth between mental health | :02:07. | :02:09.
services and learning disabilities and that is one of the issues | :02:10. | :02:11.
Autism isn't either of those conditions, it is a condition | :02:12. | :02:16.
Faced with criticism that autism services across Wales are patchy | :02:17. | :02:23.
at best, the National Autism Plan has been revamped to establish | :02:24. | :02:26.
a National Autism Service by 2019, supporting children and adults | :02:27. | :02:33.
within health, education, social services and housing together | :02:34. | :02:36.
to try and make sure you get the same support wherever | :02:37. | :02:39.
As far as I understand it is the first in the world, | :02:40. | :02:43.
It is Wales leading the way because we listen to what has worked | :02:44. | :02:48.
in the past and hasn't been successful and to understand our | :02:49. | :02:52.
problem as it exists and try and do something about it. | :02:53. | :02:55.
Generally speaking, the new plan has been welcomed although there | :02:56. | :03:03.
are concerns there aren't enough concrete targets in it. | :03:04. | :03:05.
It is argued a new law is needed to back it up but if the new plan | :03:06. | :03:09.
means these pupils and others like them benefit, there will be | :03:10. | :03:12.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, | :03:13. | :03:17.
calling on politicians to put housing top of the agenda. | :03:18. | :03:22.
The event was organised by eight separate organisations under | :03:23. | :03:25.
the name "Homes for Wales" campaign - they claim the country is facing | :03:26. | :03:27.
All the political parties at the assembly say housing | :03:28. | :03:34.
The remains of a woman who went missing 14 years ago, | :03:35. | :03:40.
have been found at a quarry in Monmouthshire. | :03:41. | :03:42.
53-year-old Margaret Llewellyn was last seen at her home | :03:43. | :03:44.
Her disappearance prompted a major search operation, and relatives | :03:45. | :03:49.
Gwent Police say her remains were found at Beaufort Quarry, | :03:50. | :03:54.
An injured woman was forced to wait for an ambulance on the side | :03:55. | :04:02.
of a busy road in Cardiff for over four hours. | :04:03. | :04:05.
The 58-year-old tripped on a kerb on Penarth Road at around 10:30am, | :04:06. | :04:08.
hurting her back, but an ambulance didn't reach her until around | :04:09. | :04:11.
The Chief Executive of the Wales Ambulance Service has | :04:12. | :04:17.
apologised, saying current pressure on services meant they did not | :04:18. | :04:19.
have the resources to send a crew quicker. | :04:20. | :04:24.
The Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood's speech to her party conference | :04:25. | :04:27.
in Llanelli has been dominated by attacks on Welsh Labour's | :04:28. | :04:30.
She also set out the party's offering to voters ahead | :04:31. | :04:35.
of the assembly election, which include a major | :04:36. | :04:38.
re-organisation of the NHS, and writing off the debts | :04:39. | :04:40.
So many of you understand that our people have been taken | :04:41. | :04:48.
That you might have given a lifetime of loyalty to one party | :04:49. | :04:56.
but you are now asking what you're getting back. | :04:57. | :05:03.
The creator of the SuperTed cartoon series has criticised | :05:04. | :05:06.
the involvement of what he calls Welsh government "bureaucrats" | :05:07. | :05:08.
Mike Young, who is now a Hollywood film producer, says a lack | :05:09. | :05:14.
of support has forced him to make his next film outside Wales. | :05:15. | :05:18.
Our arts and media correspondent, Huw Thomas, has more. | :05:19. | :05:25.
SuperTed launched the career of Mike Young - the Welsh producer | :05:26. | :05:31.
who went on to make films and cartoons | :05:32. | :05:33.
His next film isn't animated, it will feature the legendary | :05:34. | :05:38.
He was refused support from the Welsh | :05:39. | :05:53.
He still has close links with Wales and launched | :05:54. | :05:56.
his latest big-screen animation in Wales this week. | :05:57. | :05:58.
Asked what he thought of the film and TV industry | :05:59. | :06:00.
here, his recent experience left him concerned. | :06:01. | :06:02.
I am a commercial director and I think if the industry | :06:03. | :06:06.
is going to work in Wales, they have got to become very commercial. | :06:07. | :06:12.
They have got around them people who know | :06:13. | :06:14.
how package films and how to market and sell them. | :06:15. | :06:28.
Rather than, you know, office workers. | :06:29. | :06:29.
The Welsh government said its support for the industry | :06:30. | :06:31.
has given Wales a global reputation for productions. | :06:32. | :06:33.
Its media production budget is delivering tangible results | :06:34. | :06:35.
and it made commercial decisions based on | :06:36. | :06:37.
Four more productions still have access to funds and will be released | :06:38. | :06:43.
Norm of the North is Mike's latest animation. | :06:44. | :06:54.
The tale of a polar bear charged with saving his home in the Arctic. | :06:55. | :06:57.
But it is SuperTed who has defined his career and is a character | :06:58. | :07:00.
We are at the beginning of writing a new SuperTed series and we hope | :07:01. | :07:08.
to start producing it and we will produce it | :07:09. | :07:11.
Will it be in Welsh or English or both? | :07:12. | :07:17.
S4C have shown interest in being part of it. | :07:18. | :07:20.
Mike Young is still passionate about Wales and accepts | :07:21. | :07:23.
its funding rejection might have coloured his attitude | :07:24. | :07:26.
towards the way the industry is run but it | :07:27. | :07:28.
hasn't put him off regularly returning from LA and bringing | :07:29. | :07:31.
with him one of the most iconic characters in Welsh television. | :07:32. | :07:38.
Sport and Welsh cylcists Elinor Barker and Keira Horne | :07:39. | :07:40.
were both part of Great Britain's Women's Team Pursuit that won bronze | :07:41. | :07:43.
this evening at the World Track Cycling Championships in London. | :07:44. | :07:47.
It was a disappointment for Cardiff's Owain Doull who missed | :07:48. | :07:50.
out on a bronze in the Individual Pursuit by one hundredth | :07:51. | :07:52.
Losing to his GB team mate Andy Tennant. | :07:53. | :07:58.
Rugby and the Scarlets scored three tries, winning 24-15 | :07:59. | :08:00.
Man of the match Steff Evans crossed twice but the Scarlets will be | :08:01. | :08:05.
disappointed they didn't score one more try, to secure a bonus point. | :08:06. | :08:08.
Time for a look at what the weather has in store this weekend with | :08:09. | :08:15.
A taste of winter today with some snow on the high ground. We can look | :08:16. | :08:26.
forward to plenty of dry weather over the weekend but the cold wind | :08:27. | :08:31.
will take the edge of the temperatures. Any remaining bit of | :08:32. | :08:35.
rain, sleet and snow will clear and overnight will hang on to plenty of | :08:36. | :08:39.
cloud with temperatures getting down to minus one Celsius. Low pressure | :08:40. | :08:44.
moving away tomorrow, high-pressure starting to build from the West and | :08:45. | :08:49.
with it a more settled today compare to today. A cold start to Saturday | :08:50. | :08:54.
morning. Brisk north-westerly winds starting the day. Some sunshine and | :08:55. | :08:58.
showers along the north and west but a lot of dry weather to look forward | :08:59. | :09:02.
to. A bit more cloud as the day goes on. For the rest of the British | :09:03. | :09:06.
Isles it is a cold day with brisk north-easterly winds bringing the | :09:07. | :09:11.
edge off. Some showers over parts of the Southeast and Scotland, which | :09:12. | :09:17.
could be wintry for a time. Tomorrow afternoon there could be a few | :09:18. | :09:21.
isolated showers with a lot of dry weather compared to today with some | :09:22. | :09:26.
sunshine. The wind could make it feel cold with temperatures between | :09:27. | :09:30.
six and eight Celsius. Tomorrow night any remaining showers should | :09:31. | :09:33.
clear and some frost forming into the early hours of Sunday morning | :09:34. | :09:36.
with lighter winds. Temperatures getting down to minus one Celsius. | :09:37. | :09:41.
On Sunday, lighter winds making it feel less cold with some sunshine | :09:42. | :09:45.
and the risk of some showers for the top temperatures between five and | :09:46. | :09:49.
seven Celsius. A lot of dry weather on Monday with more persistent rain | :09:50. | :09:51.
on Tuesday. Have a lovely weekend. We're back with our next | :09:52. | :09:53.
update at 6:00pm tomorrow. But that's Wales Today, | :09:54. | :09:56.
thanks for watching. From everyone on the | :09:57. | :09:58.
late team, goodnight. | :09:59. | :10:00. |
