Our top stories: We're live at Port Talbot steelworks | :00:00. | :00:08.
as the board of the Indian Steel giant Tata decides to sell | :00:09. | :00:11.
And the school trip from Blaenau Gwent caught up in that | :00:12. | :00:17.
Tonight, praise for the teachers' calmness. | :00:18. | :00:37.
Port Talbot steelworks has been put up for sale tonight. | :00:38. | :00:46.
Along with all of its parent company Tata's UK operations. | :00:47. | :00:51.
The decision was taken by the company board in India. | :00:52. | :00:54.
Port Talbot is the biggest steel plant in Britain and employs | :00:55. | :00:56.
Many thousands more people in the wider economy depend upon it. | :00:57. | :01:00.
Our business correspondent Brian Meechan is in Port Talbot | :01:01. | :01:02.
Brian, tell us what happened at the meeting? | :01:03. | :01:13.
There was a delegation that went to India including people from the | :01:14. | :01:21.
community Steelworkers union and also the local MP here and they were | :01:22. | :01:26.
pressing the case for the survival plan that had been put forward by | :01:27. | :01:30.
the local management team here and hoping that it would get the backing | :01:31. | :01:36.
in Mumbai. That meant 750 job losses here, but to protect over 3000 jobs | :01:37. | :01:42.
in the longer term, but it did mean ?100 million of investment coming | :01:43. | :01:45.
from Tata Steel, a company that has already invested very heavily in | :01:46. | :01:49.
this and it seems that Tata Steel has decided that that investment | :01:50. | :02:00.
will not be forthcoming. It is not just Port Talbort, it is also other | :02:01. | :02:07.
places in the area. It will be interesting to see if other | :02:08. | :02:12.
companies come in to rescue Tata Steel when it has that 100 -- ?1 | :02:13. | :02:20.
million per day loss that we were speaking about. Now we speak to | :02:21. | :02:24.
Barry Evans, a worker from the steelworks. This was not the news | :02:25. | :02:29.
you want to do here. Unfortunately not. We have not seen a statement | :02:30. | :02:32.
yet and it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to inform the workforce. | :02:33. | :02:36.
I would not like to speak your late on it. If it is true, I would expect | :02:37. | :02:40.
Tata Steel to be a responsible seller. They have always promised as | :02:41. | :02:44.
they would be a responsible seller so we will hold them to that. We | :02:45. | :02:47.
will not allow them to walk away from us. We will be in full | :02:48. | :02:52.
discussions with all parties. Calls tonight for the assembly to be | :02:53. | :02:55.
recalled. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has said the UK Government | :02:56. | :03:00.
must intervene. Would you back"? Definitely. Like I said, until we | :03:01. | :03:06.
see the full detail of the plan, this is a foundation industry, those | :03:07. | :03:10.
two blast furnaces are some of the best in the world, the quality of | :03:11. | :03:14.
steel is some of the best in the world, the workforce is second to | :03:15. | :03:17.
none. They are highly skilled people. We would expect the governor | :03:18. | :03:20.
to back us. One of the steel industry has gone from the whole of | :03:21. | :03:23.
the UK, it will never recover. It will never come back. Tell us | :03:24. | :03:27.
briefly what impact this will have on the workers in there and the | :03:28. | :03:31.
wider community. Obviously, it will be distressing, but we have not seen | :03:32. | :03:35.
the detail yet and I am not prepared to speculate on it. Until I have | :03:36. | :03:39.
seen an official statement, it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to | :03:40. | :03:41.
come forward and make a statement to the workforce and then we can get in | :03:42. | :03:45.
to the detail of it and then began work on a plan but hopefully some | :03:46. | :03:48.
good partners to work with. Barry Evans, thank you very much. Well, | :03:49. | :03:52.
there is, it has to be said, shop here tonight. There was real hope | :03:53. | :03:56.
amongst the unions that this rescue plan was going to be getting that | :03:57. | :04:00.
backing from Tata Steel and it would allow them that breathing space of a | :04:01. | :04:04.
year or two years to sort out the problems here and turn things | :04:05. | :04:08.
around. Now it is certainly an uncertain future for the workers | :04:09. | :04:10.
here and for the local community. And with Port Talbot | :04:11. | :04:12.
steelworks now for sale, for those who live and work | :04:13. | :04:15.
in the community? The decision to sell will not only | :04:16. | :04:18.
affect workers but also thousands of people who indirectly | :04:19. | :04:21.
rely on the steelworks Our reporter Ben Price has spent | :04:22. | :04:23.
the day in Port Talbot. Think Port Talbot - | :04:24. | :04:29.
think steelworks. It's the foundation of a town that | :04:30. | :04:34.
has a strong community spirit - a spirit that's now | :04:35. | :04:37.
being truly tested. For steelworker Vince Lewis - | :04:38. | :04:39.
this is his regular walk home From a family of steelworkers - | :04:40. | :04:42.
he knows all too well of the importance of the works | :04:43. | :04:49.
to households throughout the area. It has been a difficult couple of | :04:50. | :04:59.
weeks. People have already finished and people are having to look at | :05:00. | :05:07.
alternative employment. There has been help and support available for | :05:08. | :05:12.
that but it is a worrying time. Especially younger people who have | :05:13. | :05:17.
taken on mortgages recently, taking on homes. It is very worrying. For | :05:18. | :05:25.
others, the anxiety of job cuts is affecting daily life. You work with | :05:26. | :05:33.
people for 25 years in the selection process. Some had been not selected, | :05:34. | :05:40.
some had been selected. Everybody is just worried about their jobs. The | :05:41. | :05:52.
decision taken by Tata Steel today not only affects the Steelworkers | :05:53. | :05:56.
themselves but also the various industries involved with the | :05:57. | :06:01.
planned. Everybody has some type of connection. Behind the railway | :06:02. | :06:05.
station, infamous file is breakfast rolls, is Mandy's burger van. 27 | :06:06. | :06:12.
years we have been here. We have lots of customers from all over but | :06:13. | :06:14.
a lot of them are from the steelworks. So what will it mean for | :06:15. | :06:18.
this business, without the town's biggest employer? People just can't | :06:19. | :06:25.
afford it. They will all be looking for work. Now a local councillor, | :06:26. | :06:32.
this man worked for the planned for over 20 years. He has seen the | :06:33. | :06:36.
workforce reduced from over 20,000 in the 1960s to around 4000 today. | :06:37. | :06:42.
The community here have got heavy hearts today. They have met the | :06:43. | :06:46.
challenges and the unions have met the tasks over the years, so the | :06:47. | :06:50.
workforce have made tremendous efforts in spite of all of this. But | :06:51. | :06:55.
as that separates now appear to be in vain, with plans to sell out, the | :06:56. | :06:58.
question remains as to who, if anyone, Stan -- can step in to save | :06:59. | :07:02.
the lifeblood of Port Talbort. Tributes have been paid to a five | :07:03. | :07:04.
year old boy who died from Capel Bangor near Aberystwyth, | :07:05. | :07:08.
and 77-year-old Margaretta Jones were among four people who died | :07:09. | :07:16.
in the crash on the A470 The Headteacher at Ysgol | :07:17. | :07:19.
Gymraeg Aberystwyth, where Ned Jones was a pupil, | :07:20. | :07:24.
described him as a "dear The Police are appealing | :07:25. | :07:27.
for witnesses. There's going to be a new approach | :07:28. | :07:32.
to primary healthcare in Prestatyn. Betsi Cadwaladr Healthboard | :07:33. | :07:35.
will transfer GP services to a new medical hub | :07:36. | :07:37.
in the town for 23,000 patients GPs will work alongside a team | :07:38. | :07:42.
of healthcare specialists at Healthy Prestatyn, | :07:43. | :07:50.
which will be run by the Health Board, | :07:51. | :07:51.
following the decision by two New powers allowing | :07:52. | :07:53.
the Welsh Government to borrow millions of pounds to fund | :07:54. | :07:59.
investment should be spent on building new houses, | :08:00. | :08:02.
rather than on a new motorway south of Newport, according | :08:03. | :08:07.
to the Liberal Democrats. By 2018, Welsh Ministers | :08:08. | :08:10.
will be able to borrow up Labour wants spend some of this | :08:11. | :08:15.
on a new M4 relief road. But Welsh Lib Dem leader, | :08:16. | :08:19.
Kirsty Williams, says its priorities Parents in Blaenau Gwent have | :08:20. | :08:21.
praised teachers at a local high school after pupils on a school trip | :08:22. | :08:28.
were caught up in a shooting No one from Tredegar Comprehensive | :08:29. | :08:31.
was hurt, but one mother who spoke to her daughter during the incident | :08:32. | :08:42.
says teachers were instrumental A man with a gun tries | :08:43. | :08:44.
to enter the famous white Teenagers from Tredegar | :08:45. | :08:52.

were fired yesterday, recalling what happens | :08:57. | :09:05.
again this afternoon. The police were running past us | :09:06. | :09:10.
shouting things like 'Get out of the way' | :09:11. | :09:14.
and stuff like that. Then one came back and said we need | :09:15. | :09:22.
For her mum it's been an emotional couple of days. | :09:23. | :09:36.
We put her on loudspeakers so we could all speak to her. | :09:37. | :09:39.
Thinking she would tell us what sort of day she'd had. | :09:40. | :09:42.
It wasn't the reaction I was hoping for when I answered the phone. | :09:43. | :09:45.
She screams down the phone, saying that some man has a gun. | :09:46. | :09:53.
No one from the school was hurt, the gunman is now in hospital | :09:54. | :09:56.
The school has since posted photos of pupils continuing their history | :09:57. | :10:07.
Nothing can stop them according to one Facebook post. | :10:08. | :10:11.
Parents are full of praise for teachers. | :10:12. | :10:12.
The teacher I spoke to was reassuring, she was calm | :10:13. | :10:15.
If she is calm, the kids are calm as well. | :10:16. | :10:20.
I'm sure all the parents appreciate everything that they've done. | :10:21. | :10:25.
I really can't wait for them to come home to thank them | :10:26. | :10:28.
Chelsea's Brother, Kyle, had this message for his sister | :10:29. | :10:33.
It was never likely to be a mistake any of them would forget, | :10:34. | :10:41.
mums and dads still anxiously waiting to see them | :10:42. | :10:43.
Let's see what the weather has in store - Sue Charles | :10:44. | :10:48.
Overnight, dry spells, a few scattered showers, | :10:49. | :10:59.
some wintry, with snow in the hills, possibly some frost patches | :11:00. | :11:05.
in sheltered rural spots across north and central Wales | :11:06. | :11:07.
with temperatures just above freezing here. | :11:08. | :11:11.
The trough which brought today's showers clears away eastwards | :11:12. | :11:13.
Tomorrow starts chilly, a few showers around, | :11:14. | :11:17.
again some wintry with a hail risk but winds easing and generally | :11:18. | :11:22.
turning drier and brighter across the UK. | :11:23. | :11:27.
Showers clearing for most with sunny spells becoming more widespread. | :11:28. | :11:32.
A few showers lingering across the north west of Scotland. | :11:33. | :11:38.
Coolest here at 8 Celsius, warmest in south east | :11:39. | :11:42.
And a drier end to the day across Wales with more sunshine | :11:43. | :11:48.
later, lighter westerly winds and highs of 8 Celsius in Ceredigion | :11:49. | :11:51.
Tomorrow night, maybe the odd wintry shower, otherwise dry with lighter | :11:52. | :11:55.
Temperatures will drop away - sub-zero across mid Wales | :11:56. | :12:02.
with a frost overnight into Thursday. | :12:03. | :12:04.
A cold start, then a lovely springlike day for most of Wales. | :12:05. | :12:06.
Sunny spells, variable cloud, light winds and just a very small | :12:07. | :12:09.
A brief ridge of high pressure is keeping things quiet | :12:10. | :12:12.
and settled on Thursday, but another weather | :12:13. | :12:14.
system will try to push in from the Atlantic on Friday. | :12:15. | :12:22.
Could be a dry start Friday, but turning cloudier and windy | :12:23. | :12:25.
Port Talbot steelworks has been put up | :12:26. | :12:30.
along with all of its parent company Tata's UK operations. | :12:31. | :12:35.
The decision was taken by the company board in India. | :12:36. | :12:38.
Port Talbot is the biggest steel plant in Britain and employs | :12:39. | :12:42.
The MP for the area who travelled to meet the company has just given his | :12:43. | :13:01.
opinion. We are very disappointed that this decision was made. We will | :13:02. | :13:04.
continue to work in partnership with Tata Steel and the workforce, I'm | :13:05. | :13:10.
speaking on behalf of the workforce, but the fundamental point is that | :13:11. | :13:12.
the fight will always be on to ensure that we continue to make | :13:13. | :13:19.
steel in Port Talbort and if that is under the ownership of Tata Steel or | :13:20. | :13:22.
another company, that will remain to be seen. We will have more on that | :13:23. | :13:30.
decision in breakfast from 6am tomorrow morning. That is from | :13:31. | :13:31.

now. | :13:33. | :13:33. |
