for President. Join me now on BBC Two, 11 o'clock in Scotland. That is

0:00:000:00:00

Two, 11 o'clock in Scotland. That is it

0:00:000:00:00

Two, 11 o'clock in Scotland. That is it from

0:00:000:00:00

Two, 11 o'clock in Scotland. That is it from us,

0:00:000:00:00

Good evening. Tonight's headlines:

0:00:020:00:05

Emergency talks on the future of the steel industry.

0:00:050:00:08

The UK Government says it is doing all it can

0:00:080:00:11

but can't give any guarantees.

0:00:110:00:13

And more nurses and smaller classes.

0:00:130:00:15

The Liberal Democrats launch their Assembly election campaign.

0:00:150:00:19

Good evening.

0:00:340:00:35

"There's no guarantee of success".

0:00:350:00:37

The Prime Minister's warning as the fight to save thousands

0:00:370:00:41

of Welsh steel jobs gets underway.

0:00:410:00:43

David Cameron chaired a meeting of key ministers in Downing

0:00:430:00:45

Street this morning.

0:00:450:00:47

He says his government is doing everything it can to save Britain's

0:00:470:00:50

biggest steelworks at Port Talbot.

0:00:500:00:53

But critics say its handling of the crisis has been "a shambles".

0:00:530:00:56

Here's our parliamentary correspondent David Cornock.

0:00:560:00:59

A lot at stake as cabinet ministers arrived in Downing Street

0:00:590:01:02

early this morning.

0:01:020:01:04

Minister, has the government ignored the plight of the Welsh people?

0:01:040:01:07

Are you going to save thousands of Welsh jobs?

0:01:070:01:10

The meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister,

0:01:100:01:12

lasted less than an hour.

0:01:120:01:14

We were concerned that there was the chance that there could have

0:01:140:01:17

been an outright closure of Port Talbot and that is why

0:01:170:01:20

we worked very hard with the company to make sure there is a proper sales

0:01:200:01:24

process and we'll be doing everything we can to encourage

0:01:240:01:27

people to come forward but this is a difficult situation,

0:01:270:01:29

there's no guarantees of success.

0:01:290:01:32

That warning of no guarantee of success may be seen as an attempt

0:01:320:01:36

to manage expectations as Tata Steel tries to offload a business losing

0:01:360:01:42

a million pounds a day.

0:01:420:01:45

The Prime Minister said he isn't ruling anything out,

0:01:450:01:49

but he added that nationalisation is not the right answer.

0:01:490:01:54

Labour say UK ministers should have done more in the run-up to Tata's

0:01:540:01:58

decision to sell.

0:01:580:02:00

I think it has been a total shambles.

0:02:000:02:03

It seems to be a blend of incompetence and indifference.

0:02:030:02:07

Why wasn't Sajid Javid or Anna Soubry with me in Mumbai?

0:02:070:02:12

Some of that delegation who went to India are now back in Port Talbot

0:02:120:02:16

hoping they can make a difference to the prospects

0:02:160:02:20

for Britain's biggest steelworks.

0:02:200:02:22

I don't believe in nationalisation.

0:02:220:02:24

I believe we're at the point in time for support from the government

0:02:240:02:28

while we are looking for a buyer or while we are looking

0:02:280:02:31

for the next step.

0:02:310:02:33

And I think that's going to be essential going forward.

0:02:330:02:35

I don't believe renationalisation is the right way to go

0:02:350:02:39

for the simple reason that we don't want a hand-out or we don't

0:02:390:02:42

want any charity.

0:02:420:02:44

All we want is an even playing field and a fair crack of the whip.

0:02:440:02:48

Besides Port Talbot, Tata also has operations

0:02:480:02:50

at Llanwern in Newport, Trostre in Llanelli

0:02:500:02:53

and Shotton in Flintshire.

0:02:530:02:55

Together they employ almost 3,000 people.

0:02:550:02:58

We are not calling for nationalisation.

0:02:580:03:01

Today is the 36th anniversary for when the works behind us lost

0:03:010:03:05

6,500 men in one day.

0:03:050:03:07

That happened under a nationalised industry.

0:03:070:03:10

We need short-term help to make sure the businesses around Tata Steel

0:03:100:03:14

are still viable for when a buyer is found.

0:03:140:03:19

But the eyes of the world are on Port Talbot tonight.

0:03:190:03:22

The UK Government claims to have intervened to prevent its overnight

0:03:220:03:25

closure and give breathing space to the search for a buyer but it may

0:03:250:03:30

not be enough to stop the sun setting on an iconic industry.

0:03:300:03:35

The Ministry of Defence has been reprimanded over failures which led

0:03:350:03:39

to the deaths of three soldiers in the Brecon Beacons.

0:03:390:03:42

Reservists Craig Roberts from Penrhyn Bay, Edward Mayer

0:03:420:03:45

and James Dunsby died as a result of neglect while on an SAS selection

0:03:450:03:49

exercise in 2013.

0:03:490:03:52

The Health and Safety Executive issued its strongest sanction,

0:03:520:03:55

a crown censure, as the law does not allow the MoD to be prosecuted.

0:03:550:03:59

The MoD has apologised for the failings.

0:03:590:04:03

Should the Arts Council of Wales be more involved in the film

0:04:030:04:07

and TV industry here?

0:04:070:04:10

Its chairman, Professor Dai Smith, says it's effectively been barred

0:04:100:04:13

from offering its expertise to the Welsh Government's

0:04:130:04:16

creative industries team.

0:04:160:04:19

In an interview with BBC Wales, he said the government's sometimes

0:04:190:04:21

acted in a "knuckle-headed" and "philistine" fashion.

0:04:210:04:25

In some parts of government there has been a silo mentality.

0:04:250:04:29

There are some parts of government ministerial office which seem to be

0:04:290:04:33

incapable of understanding co-operation and partnership

0:04:330:04:37

is the name of the game, not chivvying and ordering people

0:04:370:04:40

about and sometimes getting it wrong in a knuckleheaded,

0:04:400:04:45

philistine fashion.

0:04:450:04:47

The Liberal Democrats launched their election campaign

0:04:470:04:50

in Llanrhystud, Ceredigion, this morning.

0:04:500:04:53

Leader Kirsty Williams highlighted the party's key priorities,

0:04:530:04:55

including providing more nurses, reducing class sizes and increasing

0:04:550:04:59

the number of apprenticeships.

0:04:590:05:01

Arwyn Jones reports.

0:05:010:05:04

The Liberal Democrats decided to tee off their campaign at a golf

0:05:040:05:08

club in Ceredigion.

0:05:080:05:10

One of the constituencies where they are hopeful

0:05:100:05:13

of making gains.

0:05:130:05:14

We have spent the months running up to the election listening

0:05:140:05:18

to what the people of Wales want and what we have heard loud

0:05:180:05:21

and clear is that they just want the Welsh government to get

0:05:210:05:24

the basics right for them.

0:05:240:05:26

They want a health service that is going to be

0:05:260:05:28

there when they need it, good schools for their children

0:05:280:05:31

and they want an opportunity economy, an economy that

0:05:310:05:33

does not just allow them to survive but thrive.

0:05:330:05:36

We want to make sure there are more nurses in our hospitals,

0:05:360:05:39

we want to make sure that we cut class sizes so that teachers have

0:05:390:05:42

got time to give to individual students, and we want that

0:05:420:05:45

successful economy that allows people to buy their own home.

0:05:450:05:49

Launching their election campaign in a golf club,

0:05:490:05:53

the Lib Dems say predictions of their electoral demise are par

0:05:530:05:56

for the course.

0:05:560:05:58

However, they did have a terrible time at last year's general

0:05:580:06:01

election, down to just one MP in Wales.

0:06:010:06:03

They could be in for a difficult time in May.

0:06:030:06:07

This is going to be a tough Assembly election, no doubt about that.

0:06:070:06:11

The polling suggests they are unlikely to hold

0:06:110:06:14

on to the five seats they have and it is going to be very tough

0:06:140:06:17

for them to hold on to one or two seats at this election.

0:06:170:06:21

But the party's remaining MP in Wales told me that

0:06:210:06:24

although their performances have been below par,

0:06:240:06:27

they are now on the up in terms of members in Wales

0:06:270:06:30

and they are hoping for a strong showing in May.

0:06:300:06:34

What happens after the Assembly elections in May, that is up

0:06:340:06:36

to the people of Wales to decide.

0:06:360:06:39

We have got to stick to the strong message we are putting forward.

0:06:390:06:42

At this point in time, all the parties are there

0:06:420:06:46

with the messages they are putting to the electorate and it is early

0:06:460:06:50

days in the campaign.

0:06:500:06:52

We are confident the response will be a positive one.

0:06:520:06:55

In politics it can be difficult to get the lay of the green

0:06:550:06:58

but there is no doubt the party has been through a difficult period.

0:06:580:07:02

However, as in golf, the hope is if they can

0:07:020:07:06

hold their nerve, they can succeed on May 5th.

0:07:060:07:10

An historic walled garden on Anglesey which was badly damaged

0:07:100:07:14

by flooding in December has re-opened.

0:07:140:07:16

Several rare plants were washed away by flood water

0:07:160:07:20

at Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens near Menai Bridge on Boxing Day.

0:07:200:07:23

Most of the work to restore the gardens has been finished

0:07:230:07:26

but work to re-build a collapsed 200-year-old wall has

0:07:260:07:29

not yet started.

0:07:290:07:31

We are trying to restore the gardens to how they were before.

0:07:310:07:35

We are not really doing many changes.

0:07:350:07:38

We want to have the flavour and character of what it previously had.

0:07:380:07:45

A look at the weather now. Here's Sue Charles.

0:07:450:07:49

After a lovely spring-like day for most of Wales,

0:07:490:07:53

tomorrow is looking largely dry but with some rain later.

0:07:530:07:58

Overnight, dry with light winds.

0:07:580:07:59

Temperatures will drop away.

0:07:590:08:04

Near freezing across mid Wales with some frost

0:08:040:08:08

overnight into tomorrow.

0:08:080:08:11

A brief ridge of high pressure kept things settled today.

0:08:110:08:14

That clears towards Scandinavia.

0:08:140:08:17

Another weather system will try to push on from

0:08:170:08:20

the Atlantic tomorrow.

0:08:200:08:22

Some early mist and fog will clear to leave a bright

0:08:220:08:25

but chilly morning.

0:08:250:08:27

Some sunny spells with the cloud thickening from the north and west.

0:08:270:08:30

The south-east of England holding onto the rest of the brightness.

0:08:300:08:33

The rain pushing in across Northern Ireland and Scotland.

0:08:330:08:36

Temperatures between eight and 14 Celsius.

0:08:360:08:40

By mid-afternoon, rain will start to spread across North and West

0:08:400:08:44

Wales.

0:08:440:08:45

Strengthening winds reaching gale force across the west coast.

0:08:450:08:49

The best chance of staying dry further south and east.

0:08:490:08:52

Highs of nine Celsius in Gwynedd, 11 in Cardiff.

0:08:520:08:55

The front receding Friday night so it looks like some rain

0:08:550:08:59

in the north and west on Friday night, drier in the south and east,

0:08:590:09:04

cloud holding up the temperatures overnight at around eight Celsius.

0:09:040:09:09

There will be some rain at first on Saturday in the north and west

0:09:090:09:13

but this will clear northwards to leave a mostly dry and sunny day

0:09:130:09:16

with the wind easing.

0:09:160:09:18

Similar on Sunday.

0:09:180:09:21

Winds turning southerly, introducing warmer air.

0:09:210:09:25

Cloudy at times, some sunny spells, just the chance of a shower.

0:09:250:09:29

Dry weather as we head into the weekend.

0:09:290:09:33

The best of the brightness on Saturday.

0:09:330:09:35

Turning warmer on Sunday and it is staying warm

0:09:350:09:38

on Monday as well.

0:09:380:09:40

After a chillier than average March, it is looking warm

0:09:400:09:43

as we head into April.

0:09:430:09:49

We're back with the latest news and sport, traffic updates

0:09:490:09:52

and weather in Breakfast from 6:00am tomorrow morning.

0:09:520:09:54

That's Wales Today.

0:09:540:09:56

Thank you for watching.

0:09:560:09:57

From all of us on the programme, good night.
