Welcome to Wales Today, our top stories:

:00:00.:00:00.

The Welsh NHS and the cost of immigration.

:00:07.:00:09.

Tonight a war of words breaks out among Leave and Remain campaigners.

:00:10.:00:13.

Can we afford to build both the south Wales metro

:00:14.:00:17.

Tonight the call to abandon the motorway upgrade around Newport.

:00:18.:00:23.

And the mountain on fire, smoke making roads

:00:24.:00:25.

What caused this blaze near Penmaenmawr?

:00:26.:00:43.

The referendum campaign stepped up a gear today after Vote Leave

:00:44.:00:48.

campaigners claimed standards of care in the Welsh NHS would be

:00:49.:00:51.

put under huge strain by rising immigration if we remain in the EU.

:00:52.:00:59.

They say health services would need to find up to ?125,000 every

:01:00.:01:03.

The campaign group Wales Stronger in Europe has described the claims

:01:04.:01:10.

Here's our political editor, Nick Servini.

:01:11.:01:17.

They are arguably the most sensitive and emotive subjects

:01:18.:01:19.

in the EU referendum debate, immigration and the knock-on

:01:20.:01:22.

effect it has on public services like the NHS.

:01:23.:01:26.

So unsurprisingly the claim and counterclaim about the impact

:01:27.:01:28.

of a Remain or Leave food today turned into a full-blown

:01:29.:01:32.

Vote Leave has put together a range of forecasts for the result of net

:01:33.:01:41.

migration, the difference between the number of people

:01:42.:01:43.

It says if it continues at its present rate until 2030,

:01:44.:01:50.

overall EU net migration will be 65,000.

:01:51.:01:54.

But there is also an upper end to the projections, if a number

:01:55.:01:58.

of new countries like Turkey become part of the club.

:01:59.:02:00.

Then the estimate is that net migration will grow to 131,000.

:02:01.:02:05.

That is greater than the population of Vale of Glamorgan.

:02:06.:02:09.

On the basis of current spending, it is forecast that by 2030 the NHS

:02:10.:02:13.

will need ?246 million more every year to cope with the extra people.

:02:14.:02:21.

Project fear is the government coming up with variou scare

:02:22.:02:23.

stories that are unfounded about people losing their jobs,

:02:24.:02:27.

the pound collapsing and World War three.

:02:28.:02:29.

We've based these figures are reasonable estimate

:02:30.:02:34.

based on what happened when Eastern European

:02:35.:02:35.

There will be a large movement of people coming from poorer

:02:36.:02:40.

countries like Albania and Turkey to wealthier countries.

:02:41.:02:42.

The main campaigners have pointed to various recruitment drives

:02:43.:02:45.

across the EU by a number of Welsh health boards.

:02:46.:02:50.

They claim that migrants strengthen the NHS rather

:02:51.:02:52.

than put a strain on it, and have accused the Leave side

:02:53.:02:56.

of misleading people over Turkey's admission to the EU.

:02:57.:03:03.

We know that the pressure on the NHS comes from ill-health,

:03:04.:03:05.

The NHS benefits from 10% of its doctors coming

:03:06.:03:12.

from other EU countries, one fifth of care workers coming

:03:13.:03:16.

Let's look at the facts as they stand and not at outlandish

:03:17.:03:21.

statistics designed to scare ahead of this referendum.

:03:22.:03:26.

The ability of the NHS to cope with immigration levels was always

:03:27.:03:29.

going to be hotly contested, and with two and a half weeks to go

:03:30.:03:32.

it has done just that at a crucial time in the campaign.

:03:33.:03:38.

The ?500 million of borrowing allocated for the M4 relief road

:03:39.:03:40.

would be better spent on public transport infrastructure

:03:41.:03:43.

Jenny Rathbone and John Griffiths claim the so-called Metro project

:03:44.:03:50.

would be a far better use of public money,

:03:51.:03:53.

than extra miles of motorway around Newport.

:03:54.:03:56.

The Welsh Government says it will deliver both schemes,

:03:57.:04:01.

and they've been backed by business-group the CBI.

:04:02.:04:04.

It's a bold scheme bringing an integrated public

:04:05.:04:09.

transport system of trains, buses and light rail

:04:10.:04:11.

to tens of thousands of people across South Wales,

:04:12.:04:15.

enabling them to get quickly and efficiently to the capital

:04:16.:04:18.

But at a cost of ?2 billion it does not come cheap.

:04:19.:04:24.

And one Cardiff AM believes the Welsh government should divert

:04:25.:04:27.

funds from the proposed M4 relief road around Newport to help

:04:28.:04:29.

I do not see the money on the table that is needed

:04:30.:04:35.

And so I think the money would be better spent on the Metro,

:04:36.:04:44.

and then we can re-evaluate the congestion on the M4.

:04:45.:04:49.

The Metro plan is all about making public transport more attractive.

:04:50.:04:51.

At the moment, 200,000 people work in Cardiff,

:04:52.:04:54.

78,000 of them come from outside the area.

:04:55.:04:55.

But even small changes to the rail infrastructure can have an impact.

:04:56.:05:00.

Around 24 trains come to and from the valleys

:05:01.:05:04.

But here there's a bottleneck, that could be alleviated

:05:05.:05:09.

with investment, leaving a far more efficient rail

:05:10.:05:11.

Four years ago the Prime Minister described it as a foot

:05:12.:05:17.

on the windpipe of the Welsh economy.

:05:18.:05:20.

The M4 relief road should help alleviate that,

:05:21.:05:24.

but can we afford both the Metro and the relief road?

:05:25.:05:28.

The Welsh government certainly think so.

:05:29.:05:30.

And that is a viewpoint shared by the CBI in Wales.

:05:31.:05:33.

They say the M4 serves two thirds of the Welsh population and two

:05:34.:05:36.

The M4 is about connecting to the outside world,

:05:37.:05:44.

And there is no point having those internal communications

:05:45.:05:47.

unless we can connect an export goods outside.

:05:48.:05:51.

But one leading transport expert disagrees and believes the Metro

:05:52.:05:54.

In places like Bordeaux a new transport system took 40%

:05:55.:05:59.

of the commuters away on the first day.

:06:00.:06:03.

The Metro will clearly have a much better effect in terms of pulling

:06:04.:06:08.

out of their cars onto a really good first-class European

:06:09.:06:11.

The Welsh government has been given powers to borrow ?500 million

:06:12.:06:16.

But there is opposition in some quarters over what route

:06:17.:06:22.

Supporters of the Metro believe that with a strong cross-party

:06:23.:06:26.

consensus Metro many more achievable and deliverable.

:06:27.:06:32.

A man from Rhondda Cynon Taf has been jailed for four and half years

:06:33.:06:35.

for causing the deaths of three work colleagues through

:06:36.:06:37.

Stephen Parry Jenkins from Abercwmboi was driving a work

:06:38.:06:42.

van home on the M4 in June 2014, when he fell asleep at the wheel.

:06:43.:06:47.

One other person was seriously injured.

:06:48.:06:51.

An investigation is underway following a major mountain fire

:06:52.:06:53.

At one stage it was burning around100 yards

:06:54.:06:59.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service say extra care should be

:07:00.:07:03.

Here you get some idea of the scale of this fire.

:07:04.:07:12.

Fire crews were first sent in on Saturday night.

:07:13.:07:14.

By last night it had spread over one hill and was advancing down

:07:15.:07:17.

Today you could see just how much of the mountain was scorched,

:07:18.:07:23.

There is still a faint smell of burning in the air here and every

:07:24.:07:40.

now and again you seea puff of smoke coming off the hillside

:07:41.:07:43.

wearing hotspot has burst into flames again.

:07:44.:07:45.

Local people tell me this is the third major

:07:46.:07:47.

mountain fire in this area in the last eight years.

:07:48.:07:49.

I was quite worried that the fire was going to get into the gardens

:07:50.:07:53.

But fortunately that didn't happen, the fire people must have done

:07:54.:07:56.

I spoke to the neighbour who said the Fire Service have a plan,

:07:57.:08:01.

they can't get at it at the moment, they will wait until it comes

:08:02.:08:05.

into reach, and when it did they just tackled it.

:08:06.:08:07.

Whilst the cause of the fire is not yet known, the recent dry weather

:08:08.:08:10.

And with winds we have been experiencing it can quickly

:08:11.:08:16.

There is a warning that anyone deliberately setting

:08:17.:08:23.

An investigation is underway into how and why the blaze

:08:24.:08:28.

The Wales Football Squad are in France ahead of their historic

:08:29.:08:34.

They'll be based in the town of Dinard in Brittany

:08:35.:08:39.

Last night's three nil defeat against Sweden may

:08:40.:08:45.

have been underwhelming, but the squad now have a week

:08:46.:08:47.

together before they travel to Bordeaux for their opening

:08:48.:08:49.

A little Welsh pocket in the corner of France.

:08:50.:08:56.

Here in Brittany any there may be a linguistic link with Wales

:08:57.:09:02.

but the locals in Dinard have gone the extra mile,

:09:03.:09:06.

warmly reaching out this summer to their Celtic cousins.

:09:07.:09:13.

We have many flags to welcome them.

:09:14.:09:16.

I hope that Wales and France are in the final.

:09:17.:09:28.

For those from Wales here on holiday Dinard is the ideal destination.

:09:29.:09:40.

It's good that they are here after 58 years.

:09:41.:09:42.

It's a big ask, but we are Welsh, we can do anything.

:09:43.:09:47.

And quite possibly you'll see the likes of Joe Allen, Gareth Bale,

:09:48.:09:50.

Chris Coleman taking a walk on the beach.

:09:51.:09:54.

With a population of just over 10,000, Dinard's population

:09:55.:10:02.

as the Cannes of the North has attracted stars.

:10:03.:10:06.

Lawrence of Arabia lived here as a child.

:10:07.:10:09.

Locals say Alfred Hitchcock's most famous film, Psycho,

:10:10.:10:15.

And now the stars of the Wales football team have been attracted

:10:16.:10:22.

Landing late last night they received a warm welcome,

:10:23.:10:28.

whisked away by police and security escorts to the resort which will be

:10:29.:10:31.

A chance they are to relax after yesterday's tough

:10:32.:10:37.

Losing 3-0 less than a week before the start of Euro 2016

:10:38.:10:43.

Wales may have been guilty of complacency, according

:10:44.:10:48.

to Chris Coleman, but insists it will not undermine preparations.

:10:49.:10:51.

The thing that is going to get as a result next weekend

:10:52.:10:55.

We are faced with a huge challenge next weekend where all eyes

:10:56.:11:05.

This week, the manager will hope for the good news on Joe Allen,

:11:06.:11:12.

The three were absent from the loss in Stockholm last night.

:11:13.:11:17.

He ponders his starting 11th, just five days before Wales

:11:18.:11:20.

start on their historic campaign in France.

:11:21.:11:26.

Looking lovely in Brittany this evening, let's get

:11:27.:11:28.

It was warm today. But we also had a few heavy, isolated showers. If we

:11:29.:11:49.

look at the map the Show was clear for most of Wales.

:11:50.:11:50.

Temperatures staying in the mid-teens.

:11:51.:11:53.

Tomorrow, more of the same, really, some cloud, sunny

:11:54.:11:55.

A similar story across the UK, staying fine and dry for most,

:11:56.:11:59.

but as the heat builds throughout the day the humidity could trigger

:12:00.:12:02.

A warning for torrential rain, highs of 16 degrees in the Western Isles,

:12:03.:12:09.

He is the at times across Wales later, a gain any heavy downpours

:12:10.:12:15.

bring the potential for surface water flooding.

:12:16.:12:19.

Most of Wales will stay dry and warm for June, temperatures reaching

:12:20.:12:22.

Tomorrow night, the showers will clear, low-level cloud

:12:23.:12:28.

and missed will develop with some coastal fog,

:12:29.:12:30.

Temperatures remain in double figures.

:12:31.:12:35.

We keep the humid conditions for Wednesday, meaning

:12:36.:12:38.

largely fine and very warm with scattered showers possible.

:12:39.:12:41.

Then later in the week a frontal system starts to move

:12:42.:12:50.

in from the Atlantic which could bring more

:12:51.:12:53.

So we are in for more fine and humid days.

:12:54.:13:05.

Plenty of sunny spells with the occasional scattered showers.

:13:06.:13:11.

Temperatures remain in the low 20s. They start to break down by the end

:13:12.:13:15.

of the week with rain pushing in by Friday.

:13:16.:13:16.
