Welcome to the programme. Tonight's headlines.

:00:00.:00:00.

Figures obtained by Wales Today show more GP surgeries than ever

:00:00.:00:08.

are closing or being taken over by their Local Health Board.

:00:09.:00:12.

A gang is jailed for more than 43 years.

:00:13.:00:18.

And it's 50 years since the opening of the first Severn crossing.

:00:19.:00:23.

The dawn of a new economic era for South Wales.

:00:24.:00:40.

More GP surgeries in Wales are either closing or being taken over

:00:41.:00:44.

by their local Health Boards than ever before.

:00:45.:00:46.

And according to figures seen by this programme

:00:47.:00:49.

gathered by the grassroots organisation GP Survival

:00:50.:00:52.

An empty waiting room at a doctor's surgery is normally a welcome sight

:00:53.:01:02.

GP, Dr Naoko Koto, has been running the Horeb

:01:03.:01:07.

surgery in Treorchy on her own for a year.

:01:08.:01:09.

She is handing back the surgery's contract to the Cwm Taf Local

:01:10.:01:15.

Health Board, her thousands of patients have to find a new GP.

:01:16.:01:20.

Looking after 3,200 patients on my own, I felt

:01:21.:01:25.

It was not sustainable as a long-term option.

:01:26.:01:33.

Difficulties around recruiting new GPs across Wales is

:01:34.:01:35.

Last year, locum GP, Sophie Quinney, sent Freedom of Information

:01:36.:01:42.

requests to all seven local health boards in Wales.

:01:43.:01:46.

She wanted to know how many GP surgeries have closed since 2010.

:01:47.:01:50.

She also asked how many had handed back their contracts and

:01:51.:01:55.

were now run directly by the health boards.

:01:56.:01:57.

12 months on, she has asked the same questions again and the

:01:58.:02:00.

figures suggest the situation is getting worse.

:02:01.:02:03.

In the past year, eight surgeries in North Wales have been taken over

:02:04.:02:07.

In Cwm Taf, five surgeries have given

:02:08.:02:12.

up their contracts or are closing. More than in any year since 2010.

:02:13.:02:17.

But in Cardiff and Vale, there was some better news.

:02:18.:02:20.

No surgeries have been taken over by the health board

:02:21.:02:23.

Across Wales, 20 GP surgeries had to close or be taken over

:02:24.:02:29.

in just one year compared to 33 in the previous five

:02:30.:02:32.

If we are not understood and supported now, I think the sad

:02:33.:02:40.

news is that for patients and communities it's going to spell

:02:41.:02:45.

the end of what we understand to be the family doctor.

:02:46.:02:48.

The GP appointed by the Welsh Goverment to solve the problem says

:02:49.:02:52.

recruiting more GPs is just part of the solution.

:02:53.:02:55.

In order to enable the GP to have enough time to see the patients

:02:56.:03:01.

who really need to see the GP, and the GP really wants to see

:03:02.:03:04.

a more proactive way then we need to use the range of other health

:03:05.:03:08.

professional services and the other services in general.

:03:09.:03:12.

Whatever happens to solve this problem it will come too

:03:13.:03:16.

She's leaving Horeb and Treorchy to work at another GP surgery.

:03:17.:03:22.

A trend health professionals say needs to change and fast.

:03:23.:03:28.

An organised crime gang has been jailed for a total of more than 43

:03:29.:03:32.

years following a spate of burglaries across north Wales

:03:33.:03:35.

The men from the traveller community stole items worth more than ?100,00.

:03:36.:03:43.

This was the moment one of the gang was arrested,

:03:44.:03:50.

part of a co-ordinated series of raids involving more than

:03:51.:03:53.

John James Purcell was detained at a travellers site in Wrexham.

:03:54.:03:57.

He and his colleagues carried out a series of burglaries in spring

:03:58.:04:00.

and summer last year in north Wales, the north west of England,

:04:01.:04:03.

and the Midlands targeting predominantly Asian families

:04:04.:04:06.

who were storing high value jewellery at their homes.

:04:07.:04:09.

Often the gold is purer than in Western jewellery.

:04:10.:04:12.

Burglary is a traumatic instance for anybody.

:04:13.:04:17.

The impact of these burglaries was potentially more

:04:18.:04:20.

because of the mess they created and the items

:04:21.:04:22.

That is why it is a priority, any offence of burglary is a priority

:04:23.:04:27.

It'll remain a priority to the police.

:04:28.:04:30.

Most of the victims were originally from the Indian subcontinent,

:04:31.:04:33.

Many follow the custom of passing valuable jewellery to their children

:04:34.:04:38.

but these burglaries have caused many to change their ways.

:04:39.:04:41.

Dr Farook Jishi from Wrexham knows some of those who were targeted.

:04:42.:04:45.

Many of these items are handed down generation after generation so they

:04:46.:04:51.

have got a lot of sentimental value in addition to the fact they are

:04:52.:04:55.

gold from the Asian subcontinent which is high carat and people have

:04:56.:05:00.

They hire safe deposit boxes or whatever.

:05:01.:05:09.

The members of three families made up the majority

:05:10.:05:13.

of the gang which was well coordinated and used stolen

:05:14.:05:17.

high performance cars to carry out their thefts.

:05:18.:05:19.

They tried to destroy evidence by using bleach

:05:20.:05:21.

And they wore clothes, hats and even Beatles style wigs

:05:22.:05:25.

from charity shops to disguise themselves.

:05:26.:05:26.

But thanks to information from witnesses and CCTV cameras

:05:27.:05:30.

the gang aged from 18 to 47 was identified and caught.

:05:31.:05:34.

Nine men were jailed for between two and six and a half years.

:05:35.:05:37.

The judge Niclas Parri told them this was professional criminal

:05:38.:05:40.

conduct which left homeowners terrified.

:05:41.:05:44.

A man accused of murdering a schoolgirl from Flintshire 40

:05:45.:05:47.

years ago has appeared at Mold Crown Court.

:05:48.:05:50.

Stephen Hough, who's 57 and from Flint, is charged

:05:51.:05:52.

with the rape, sexual assault and murder of 15-year-old

:05:53.:05:56.

He spoke only to confirm his name via video link.

:05:57.:06:01.

The case was adjourned until December.

:06:02.:06:04.

A head teacher has defended excluding 72 pupils from regular

:06:05.:06:19.

The driver and his passenger also known as Jodi died when the Ford

:06:20.:06:25.

Fiesta collided with a Peugeot in the Conwy Valley last October. 82

:06:26.:06:29.

drill Paul Gardner who was a passenger in the Peugeot also died.

:06:30.:06:32.

A head teacher has defended excluding 72 pupils from regular

:06:33.:06:35.

classes for not complying with uniform rules.

:06:36.:06:36.

Pupils at Denbigh High School were disciplined on the first day

:06:37.:06:39.

of term on Monday for breaches of policy including "the wearing

:06:40.:06:42.

of inappropriate trousers, skirts, and footwear".

:06:43.:06:45.

The school's head says its uniform policy had been outlined

:06:46.:06:48.

It was designed to usher in a new economic era for South Wales

:06:49.:06:55.

and today marks 50 years since the original Severn Bridge

:06:56.:06:59.

It was cutting edge at the time, improving on American designs

:07:00.:07:04.

and is credited with having a profound impact on the economy.

:07:05.:07:08.

To commemorate the first crossing of the Severn bridge I have great

:07:09.:07:16.

It was a moment of national significance and

:07:17.:07:23.

While the Queen became one of the first to cross,

:07:24.:07:28.

reporters spoke to very patient paying passengers.

:07:29.:07:32.

A man from Cardiff was first in the queue.

:07:33.:07:35.

Well, by the time the vehicles start-up

:07:36.:07:38.

How have you managed to pass the time away?

:07:39.:07:45.

I brought plenty of my own entertainment with me.

:07:46.:07:50.

The bridge replaced this, the Ost Ferry.

:07:51.:07:57.

At a squeeze, it could carry 19 cars.

:07:58.:07:59.

Before we went on holiday Mike would take the car

:08:00.:08:02.

with all the cases in and leave it so we would be first or second in

:08:03.:08:06.

That is what most of the locals did, wasn't it?

:08:07.:08:11.

Construction was a high wire act using these catwalks, it took

:08:12.:08:15.

The deck which carries the cars was ground-breaking.

:08:16.:08:28.

It was designed as an aerodynamic foil.

:08:29.:08:30.

The same kind of thing you see on aeroplanes.

:08:31.:08:35.

It is designed to make sure it doesn't flap around and it was

:08:36.:08:38.

Its cost was to be recovered through a toll.

:08:39.:08:43.

Originally, two shillings and sixpence.

:08:44.:08:46.

The tolls are all too familiar for motorists

:08:47.:08:52.

There was a poem written about them at the time.

:08:53.:08:58.

"Two lands at last connected, across the waters wide.

:08:59.:09:01.

"And all the tolls collected on the English side."

:09:02.:09:05.

50 years on and the bridge has carried hundreds of

:09:06.:09:09.

millions of vehicles and employs a small army of engineers.

:09:10.:09:13.

This, one of the giant concrete anchors.

:09:14.:09:17.

Robin Shaw is a former Welsh Government director

:09:18.:09:22.

of transport and founded the website,

:09:23.:09:24.

What that bridge and bridges do is open up South Wales

:09:25.:09:30.

There are many companies particularly companies that are

:09:31.:09:37.

involved in distribution, that I have no doubt

:09:38.:09:40.

would not be based in South Wales if it weren't for the bridges.

:09:41.:09:44.

It continues to impress half a century on.

:09:45.:09:54.

The Football Association of Wales' bid for Laura McAllister to join

:09:55.:09:59.

Fifa's ruling council has been halted.

:10:00.:10:02.

A former Wales player and former Chair of Sport Wales,

:10:03.:10:08.

Professor McAllister hoped to become the first Brtiish

:10:09.:10:11.

A regulation, dating back to the 1940s, prevents any home

:10:12.:10:14.

nation having more than one representative on the council.

:10:15.:10:17.

Britain's David Gill is already a vice president.

:10:18.:10:23.

At the Paralympic Games in Rio Cwmbran's Keiron Duke

:10:24.:10:25.

is currently competing in the final of the F41 shot put.

:10:26.:10:30.

It was a disappointing day for Welsh athletes with London 2012 silver

:10:31.:10:33.

medallist Aaron Moores from Swansea failing to reach the final

:10:34.:10:37.

The Tour of Britain cycle race has left Wales after its second day

:10:38.:10:45.

Stage five started this morning in Aberdare,

:10:46.:10:48.

where hundreds of people lined the route.

:10:49.:10:57.

You see them on TV and we don't get to see them in our area.

:10:58.:11:01.

It is pretty cool for the Valleys here.

:11:02.:11:04.

We watched the Olympics and my husband

:11:05.:11:06.

keeps banging on about Bradley Wiggins.

:11:07.:11:07.

I live across the road from the park.

:11:08.:11:10.

It is just something you will not see again.

:11:11.:11:13.

Derek, a mixed picture at the moment?

:11:14.:11:24.

It is looking changeable over the next few days. That means some dry,

:11:25.:11:31.

brighter spells but there is some rain in the forecast and watch out

:11:32.:11:35.

for some gusty winds. A few showers around tonight, rain in places.

:11:36.:11:39.

Pembrokeshire should become dry and clear by the end of the night. The

:11:40.:11:45.

humid night but not as sticky as it has been. Lower temperatures around

:11:46.:11:49.

13 Celsius. Tomorrow morning, that is the best part of the day. Showers

:11:50.:11:54.

in places will clear leaving it to dry. Some cloud. Across the rest of

:11:55.:12:03.

the UK, we have a sprinkling of sour words. Most places dry, some

:12:04.:12:07.

sunshine but turning wet and windy across Northern Ireland. That rain

:12:08.:12:12.

across the Irish Sea reaching Cumbria and Anglesey during the

:12:13.:12:16.

afternoon. The rain accompanied by strong to fail -- gale force winds.

:12:17.:12:24.

In Wales tomorrow afternoon, some dry weather but a few showers around

:12:25.:12:27.

as well. Rain will reach the north and west late in the afternoon with

:12:28.:12:33.

strong to gale force winds. Temperatures are little higher than

:12:34.:12:37.

today, the humidity rising again. Solano night we will see a spell of

:12:38.:12:43.

rain. Rain heaviest in the hills. Part of me to -- mid Wales will see

:12:44.:12:52.

some rain. Saturday a little rain at times in the south-east, elsewhere

:12:53.:12:57.

dry and bright. A little sunshine, light winds and feeling cool. It

:12:58.:13:01.

looks like there will be a fine evening for the Proms in the park in

:13:02.:13:06.

Colwyn Bay on Saturday evening. It will turn to Lisa take a blanket.

:13:07.:13:12.

Sunday, a lot of dry weather with a freshening breeze. Highs of 70 and

:13:13.:13:17.

Wrexham. It changeable mix over the next few days, warmer on Monday.

:13:18.:13:19.

We'll be back with updates from 6.25am.

:13:20.:13:21.

From all of us on the programme, thanks for watching. Goodnight.

:13:22.:13:36.

The Pro12 season's kicking off, so it's game on for our Welsh regions.
