Welcome to Wales Today. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
Tonight's headlines. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
They sold teeth whitener containing dangerous levels of chemicals that | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
caused pain and injuries. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
Two men are jailed after a major investigation | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
by Powys Trading Standards. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
And why some traders in Abergavenny think a festival that attracts | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
thousands of visitors is leaving them out of pocket. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:36
Good evening. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
A father and son, whose family business sold dangerous | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
teeth-whitening products at the Royal Welsh Show | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
in Llanelwedd and across the UK are starting a prison sentence tonight. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
The judge described the venture, run by John Hargreaves | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
and his son Matthew, as "a sophisticated well | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
organised operation, which risked the health | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
of the general public". | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
Matthew Murray reports. | 0:00:51 | 0:01:01
The moment trading standards raided the Hargreaves luxury home | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
in Cheshire two years ago. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
Today, 69-year-old John Hargreaves, along with his 44-year-old son, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
Matthew, were sentenced for selling teeth whitening with 110 | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
times the legal limit of hydrogen peroxide, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
making, the court heard, ?3.4 million from the venture. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:20
It all started to come undone here at the Royal Welsh Show | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
when the Hargreaves started selling their teeth whitening | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
products from a stand. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
But Trading Standards were suspicious of the teeth whitening | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
stall inside the Royal Welsh Showground. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
So they posed as customers and bought some of the goods. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
They were then tested and they were shocked the results. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
The stall was raided and the goods seized. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:47
Our investigation demonstrated that they were active at 150 sites | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
throughout the whole UK, and were trading for | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
at least eight years. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:57
Ruth Clements from Dorset wanted whiter teeth, so bought one | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
of the home whitening kits from the stall at the show. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
It cost her ?30. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
She told the BBC's Fake Britain how she took it home. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
But after putting it in her mouth, she had to take it out | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
almost straightaway. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
My gums started to burn after a very short time and a tingling sensation. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
Most comfortable and very soon became painful. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
Tooth whitening is a very popular, modern way of lightening teeth, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
that is used extensively in the UK. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:27
Professor Alan Gilmour is a consultant in restorative | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
dentistry in Cardiff. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
He recognises that whitening is becoming more and more popular | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
but has raised concerns about how it is done. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:38
The major issues relate to safety. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
Safety is paramount and the materials that are used need | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
to be able to cause minimal harm, no harm, but actually | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
affect whitening. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
Unfortunately, some materials, if they are the wrong concentration | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
or the wrong material themselves, can cause sensitivity, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
sometimes extreme, and can cause gums to be burnt around | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
the teeth as well. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:57
The judge said on sentencing that this was a sophisticated, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
well-organised family operation which was thoroughly | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
dishonest, risking the health of the general public | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
for a highly lucrative business. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
He sentenced Jonathan and Matthew Hargreaves to 18 | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
months in prison on each, while Jean Hargreaves received | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
a six-month suspended sentence. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:18
An Iranian man, living in Cardiff, has been jailed for 38 months | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
for illegally helping asylum seekers into the country | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
and money laundering. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
It's the first case of its kind dealt with by the Regional | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Organised Crime Unit here. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
Cardiff Crown Court heard that 32-year-old Mostafa Rabeih Lalehka | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
helped four Iranian women and twochildren enter the UK, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
in what was described as a carefully organised enterprise, | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
where people were exploited for substantial gain. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:47
If we are serious on addressing this problem, I think we need to continue | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
to develop whatever information is available, look for information, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
to get us to a point where we can identify these people and stamp this | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
form of criminality out totally. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
To make Wales really a hostile area for individuals who want to engage | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
in this form of criminality. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:11
A former Anglesey councillor has been jailed for 18 months | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
for endangering aircraft by shining a powerful torch at RAF-jets | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
flying over his home. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:19
66-year-old John Arthur Jones had become obsessed with repeated | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
night-time low-flying exercises close to his house. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
The judge described him as arrogant and said his actions | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
were potentially life threatening. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:35
The Ukip Assembly leader, Neil Hamilton, has said he's | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
perplexed to have had his party conference speech | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
cancelled tomorrow. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:42
He's been replaced by Nathan Gill - Ukip's leader in Wales - | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
who's a supporter of the new party leader, Diane James. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
There have been tensions between the two men, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
with Mr Gill deciding to sit as an independent Assembly Member. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:59
Well, I think it's very perplexing that on behalf of Wales tomorrow, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:05
hear from someone who is not a member of the Ukip group, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
rather than the leader of the Ukip group in the assembly. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
But Nathan Gill is still Ukip 's leader in Wales. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
Isn't it right that he speaks? | 0:05:13 | 0:05:14
Has he been reappointed? | 0:05:14 | 0:05:15
To be a leader, you need followers. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
And I have been democratically elected as the leader | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
of the group in the assembly, but it is up to Diane James. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:25
Some local traders in the Abergavenny town centre claim | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
this weekend's food festival there, is leaving them out of pocket. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
They say they've been told to close to make room for the event, | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
without compensation. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:34
Paul Heaney has the story. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
Sights, sounds and tastes of an international food Festival. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
The 17 years, Abergavenny has played host to producers, chefs, critics, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
visitors from across the world. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:44
An event that is flying high, like this art installation | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
its organisers helped to pay for. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
But these market traders will have to close over the weekend to make | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
room for all those visitors. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
This business has been in Rob's family for two generations. | 0:05:52 | 0:06:02
We are all small businesses here. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
It is hard enough as it is, but to lose two days, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
it is a big impact. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:13
Other businesses have applied for one of the 300 stalls | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
at the festival itself. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
They cost hundreds of pounds though. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:17
This bakery says it's worth it. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
From another store, she can encourage people back to her | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
business in the market in future. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:28
There is no reason why it cannot work for both sides. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
I don't think people don't want the food festival to come. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
I just think that they want people to stop and give them a thought. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
I think we would have to look at making sure these people | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
have a good arrangement next year. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Contractually, the issue is with Monmouthshire Council | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
but as Abergavenny Food Festival, we promise them that we will sit | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
down and talk with them and try to work these issues out. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:50
Rob received a token amount in compensation last year for lost | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
trade but no sign of that this year. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
I asked Monmouthshire Council if they had spoken to some | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
of the traders hear about their concerns, | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
about perhaps offering some kind of compensation for them | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
losing their pitch this weekend. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
I also asked if the council had received money from the food | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
Festival this year as rent for this building. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
But I was told there was no one available for interview | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
and the council had no information to add. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
Stalls built and ready for 30,000 visitors, millions | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
of pounds of spending power. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:14
Some local businesses hoping for something slightly different | 0:07:14 | 0:07:22
next year though to make them feel better. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:31
Rugby and in the Pro12, a good night for the Cardiff Blues, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
with a win over Glasgow Warriors at the Arms Park. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
Steven Shingler secured the 23-19 win. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
But the Scarlets weren't celebrating. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
They're still waiting for their first point of the season | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
after losing to Ulser 19-8. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:54
Roald Dahl's centenary celebrations will continue this weekend, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
with Cardiff being transformed into the "City of the Unexpected". | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
Organisers remain tight-lipped about the arrangements, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:00
but say it'll be the biggest arts event ever to happen | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
on the streets of the capital. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:10
Time now for the weather forecast with Sue Charles. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
Good evening. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:13
After the humidity of the last few days, feeling much fresher | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
as we head into the weekend. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
Fairly settled with some decent sunny spells | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
and just the odd shower. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
Although rain is likely later on Sunday. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
The chart shows high pressure building from the weekend | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
but the cold front which brought torrential downpours in eastern | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
England still lingering here. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:27
So overnight, fairly quiet, the odd shower, otherwise | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
clear, dry spells. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:30
Some cloud around and slightly cooler than recent nights | 0:08:30 | 0:08:32
with north-westerly winds. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:33
So a chilly start tomorrow. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:34
We swap the humidity for fresher but fine and settled weather | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
with some decent sunny spells. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:38
And across the UK, something of an east-west split. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
Further west, in the drier, brighter zone, but where that front | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
hovers across the eastern side of England, not quite the downpours | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
of today but persistent showers. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:47
Thicker cloud lingering and feeling fresher everywhere. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
15 Celsius in north-west Scotland, 19 in south-east England, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
down several degrees on recent days here. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
Across Wales, variable amounts of cloud. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
It should stay dry and foremost. | 0:08:54 | 0:09:01
The best of the West with a cool northerly breeze. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:10
16 Celsius in Conwy, 19 in Cardiff. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:17
Temperatures back where they should be for September. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
It stays clear tomorrow night but then this cold | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
front will probably push in from the Atlantic | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
later on Sunday, so a dry but chilly start to Sunday, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:30
but turning a bit cloudy with the threat of rain | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
heading in from the West, reaching Anglesey and Pembrokeshire | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
by late afternoon. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:44
So we lose the humidity of the last few days and then we are in for | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
a cooler, fresher weekend, more typical autumnal conditions | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
to come next week. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
That's Wales Today. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:55
Thanks for watching. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:56
From everyone on the late team, good night. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00 |
