Welcome to the programme. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
Tonight's headlines: | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
It promises 400 jobs - | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
work starts on a multi-million pound retail development | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
in Merthyr Tydfil. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
And one of Wales' leading heart surgeons | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
calls for a ground-breaking operation to be made routinely | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
available on the NHS. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
Good evening. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
It's been on the agenda for 20 years | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
but work is now underway on a ?40 million retail | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
and leisure complex in Merthyr Tydfil. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
Trago Mills - which already runs three stores in Cornwall and Devon - | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
says it'll create 1,000 jobs in construction | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
and 400 in the long term. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
It was granted planning permission in 1999, but work has | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
been stalled until now. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
Here's our Business Correspondent, Brian Meechan. | 0:00:55 | 0:01:01
This was once an old brickworks, part of Merthyr Tydfil's industrial | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
past. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:09 | |
On the hill above the town's Cyfarthfa retail park, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
home to many big chains, work is starting | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
on a less familiar name. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
This the new Trago Mills site. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
The discount store's first site outside the south-west of England. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
It sells everything from carpets to clothes. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
Cyfarthfa just across the road is trading very well indeed. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
They have all the brands, a typical retail park, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
the pre-eminent retail park in the valleys already. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:35
You will add our proposition to it, I think it | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
is an offer that the shopping public will not resist | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
and it will put Merthyr as a destination on the map. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:45
This is what it should look like but it has | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
been a long time coming. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
We've been reporting on the development for 20 years. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Merthyr council has tonight given the | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
go-ahead to a ?20 million out-of-town development. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Planning problems and economic turmoil caused | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
continued delays but now work is finally underway. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
It is the latest in a series of big investments in Merthyr | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
in recent years. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
In March, General Dynamics opened its new plant in the | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
town where it assembles and tests the next generation of armoured | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
vehicles, creating 250 jobs. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
And more than 250 people are employed at | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
exhaust maker Tenneco Walker which opened in Dowlais. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:27
Part of the council strategy is to develop | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
economic development and regeneration. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
We have got a very strong development team and they work with | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
manufacturers and retailers from start to finish. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
It really is a good package we offer. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
There are concerns that the new shopping development could attract | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
people away from the town centre. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:48
Amongst Merthyr's for sale signes, this restaurant opened a year ago. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
The owners say it is thriving and believe | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Trago Mills adds to what the town has two offer. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:59
I think a lot has been done by Merthyr Council, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
the college in the centre of town as well, that is all creating | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
excitement in the town itself. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
There is a need for both a retail park and Trago Mills but | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
also the town centre should be a thriving hub as well. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:19
Trago Mills rejects any suggestions that its | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
plans will hurt shops in the town. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
Children celebrating today were not even born | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
when this was first planned. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:30
But the council say this is a clear sign that Merthyr is on the up. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
A pharmaceutical company in Flintshire is to close | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
with the loss of 66 jobs. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
NuPharm will cease trading | 0:03:37 | 0:03:38
at Deeside Industrial Park by the end of December, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
due to "significant cash losses". | 0:03:40 | 0:03:50
The company makes products for the pharmaceutical | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
and healthcare industries. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
The cause of a 100,000 litre oil spill | 0:03:53 | 0:03:54
into a Carmarthenshire stream, is yet to be found. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
The pipeline which carries Kerosene from Pembroke's Valero refinery, | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
breached near Nant-y-caws on Tuesday. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00
Valero say it's a complex operation and it could take days | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
to stop the leak. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
Heart surgeons in Cardiff recently became the first in Wales to perform | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
a ground breaking procedure which could help save | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
and transform many lives. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
But as things stand the surgery isn't routinely | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
available on the Welsh NHS. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
But one of the country's leading heart surgeons has told Wales Today | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
it's "essential" it should be. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
Our health correspondent Owain Clarke has this | 0:04:25 | 0:04:26
exclusive report. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
It's early morning but this surgical team at Wales' biggest | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
hospital is already hard at work. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
This elderly patient had been complaining about chest pains. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
Doctors found out that one of the valves in his heart | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
was becoming blocked. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
It's quite a complicated thing to repair but with one of Wales' | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
most eminent heart surgeons in charge, you would not know it. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
He is having an aortic valve replacement and coronary bypass. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
It should hopefully give him a better quality of life. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:59
Any type of heart surgery, by its very nature, can be really | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
tricky and certainly very advanced. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
But earlier on this year in the summer, the lead | 0:05:05 | 0:05:14
surgeon here and her team managed to push the boundaries further | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
than ever before and perform a procedure that has never before | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
been attempted in Wales. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
Blood is pumped from the heart through a big blood | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
vessel called the aorta. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
But if there is a weakness in its walls, it can begin to bulge. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
It is what is known as an aneurysm. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Although it is rare, if any of the bulges | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
burst, the consequences can be catastrophic. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
Previously repairing certain types of aneurysms would have needed | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
a patient to undergo two separate big operations. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
Now they can be fixed in one go. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:48
We open the arch of the aorta and we deploy this, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
this is how it looks when it comes out of its package, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:54
we deploy it into the aorta and all these bits, blood vessels | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
to the brain, come out. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
She carried out the procedure for the first time in Cardiff just | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
a few months ago. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:08
Former nurse Menna Hurford is that patient. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
She had a family history of heart problems. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
Her father died in his early 60s. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
I would go to New Zealand every other year because my | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
daughter lives there. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:22
I lost that but now I have had my operation I can go. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
The problem is, the operation, as things stand, is not | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
routinely available in Wales. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
It only took place because there was a special request for funding. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:36
But the process of making those requests is long and drawn-out. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
The alternative is to send a patient to Birmingham. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
Especially with advanced screening, more of these are diagnosed, | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
so it is essential that we offer this as a service routinely and have | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
these cases referred to us. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:53
This team and the heart surgery unit in Cardiff can already boast | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
some of the best results anywhere in Britain. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
The hope is that soon they will be able to do even more, | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
offering surgery that is right at the cutting edge. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:07
Football and Swansea City's new manager, Bob Bradley, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
has been getting used to his new Welsh surroundings. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
The 58-year-old American has been speaking | 0:07:12 | 0:07:13
for the first time today and says he's hoping to create a special | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
atmosphere at the club. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:21
An ability to deliver a message and establish an identity | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
where every time you step on a field you go for it. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
You're not afraid. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:33
You put your front foot forward. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:34
I like that kind of approach and I go out of my way | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
to make sure that players understand, come on, | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
let's enjoy the moment and let's go for it. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:45
Rugby and in the first Welsh derby of the Pro 12 season | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
it was the Ospreys' night. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:49
They beat the Cardiff Blues 51-24. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
It means the Ospreys are now above the Blues in the table. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
Let's take a look at the weekend weather forecast | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
now - here's Derek. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:00
Hello. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:01
If you've got any outdoor plans this weekend the weather is not | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
looking too bad at all. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
Mostly dry and settled. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06
Lighter winds. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
The best of the sun on Sunday. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:09
In the meantime tonight, dry for most of us | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
with the odd light shower here and there. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
A bit misty in places and not a cold night with lowest | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
temperatures 7-11dC. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
A big block of high pressure still with us over | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
Scandinavia tomorrow and that's stopping any weather fronts moving | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
in from the Atlantic. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
Tomorrow morning generally dry. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
A bit of a cloudy and misty start in places first thing but bright | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
spells and sunshine breaking through as well. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
Across the rest of the UK, East Anglia, the south-east of | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
England, rather cloudy with a few showers together with a cool breeze. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
Elsewhere a mixture of broken code, sunny spells. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
Most places dry bar the odd shower. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:52
The rest of the sunshine in the north and west of | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
Scotland and Cornwall. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:56
Close to home, much of Wales dry tomorrow | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
afternoon. | 0:08:58 | 0:08:59
Some cloud around but bright spells and sunshine as well. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
Maybe the odd shower but no more than that. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:07
Highs of 16 Celsius, 61 Fahrenheit with light winds. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:14
Tomorrow night cloud will come and go. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
Maybe one or two showers, otherwise dry. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
Clearer later in the night and chilly with a couple | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
of mist and fog patches forming. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
Now, Sunday looks like being a nice day. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
Fine and bright and a good deal of autumn sunshine. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
Maybe the odd shower in the south-east and the | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Marches later in the afternoon and in the sunshine it will feel very | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
pleasant with a light breeze from the east and north-east. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
Should be a lovely afternoon in Cardiff for the | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
football on Sunday afternoon. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:40
A high of 14 Celsius. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
Sunday the sunniest day of the weekend with more dry | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
weather for the start of next week. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:48
Have a nice weekend. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
And that is Wales Today. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:52
Our next update is at 5:45pm tomorrow evening. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
For now from all of us here, have a great weekend. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56 |
