Welcome to Wales Today. Our top stories tonight.

:00:11.:00:11.

Tony says he was sexually abused in the '70s.

:00:12.:00:14.

He is preparing to speak to the independent child abuse

:00:15.:00:16.

inquiry, which has opened an office in Wales.

:00:17.:00:18.

The Post Office worker who chased off an armed robber

:00:19.:00:21.

That is the message tonight, to Welsh victims

:00:22.:00:42.

It has come from the independent im enquiry examining the extent

:00:43.:00:49.

to which organisations like Ccouncils and the NHS failed

:00:50.:00:51.

It is basing a team in Wales, and wants people to

:00:52.:00:58.

share their experiences, as India Pollock reports.

:00:59.:01:00.

Growing up in the 1970s, Tony's childhood was blighted

:01:01.:01:02.

So, he was thrilled when a teacher put his name forward

:01:03.:01:06.

I get a chance to go on holiday and I suppose some respite

:01:07.:01:16.

from the home life I had, which was not the best.

:01:17.:01:26.

But decades on, he remembers the trip for all the wrong reasons.

:01:27.:01:29.

Tony says he was abused by the man who was supposed to be looking

:01:30.:01:32.

after the boys - an event which had a lasting impact.

:01:33.:01:35.

And I became very scared of anyone in authority.

:01:36.:01:47.

My whole schooling after that basically deteriorated.

:01:48.:01:54.

In 2012, long-buried memories were jolted by the revelations

:01:55.:01:56.

about Jimmy Savile and a string of high-profile celebrity

:01:57.:01:59.

Tony finally reported the incident to South Wales Police.

:02:00.:02:06.

They investigated, but concluded that his alleged abuser,

:02:07.:02:08.

now in his eighties and suffering from dementia, was unfit to be

:02:09.:02:11.

interviewed, so the police enquiry stalled.

:02:12.:02:18.

He is now preparing to give evidence to the Truth Project.

:02:19.:02:21.

It is one strand of the independent enquiry, which aims to look

:02:22.:02:24.

at the extent to which both private and public bodies, like councils

:02:25.:02:27.

and the armed forces, failed to protect children

:02:28.:02:29.

The enquiry is basing a team in Wales and they want victims

:02:30.:02:35.

here to get in touch and make an appointment

:02:36.:02:37.

Around 100 people are here in Cardiff today for the launch

:02:38.:02:43.

It has had a bumpy start. Now on its fourth chairwoman

:02:44.:02:47.

and several senior lawyers have resigned in recent weeks.

:02:48.:02:50.

But the woman now leading the enquiry says she's

:02:51.:02:52.

focusing on the future and it is business as usual.

:02:53.:02:58.

Myself and my fellow panel members are absolutely clear and have always

:02:59.:03:01.

been clear about what needs to be done, but we do need the time

:03:02.:03:04.

and the space to get on with this critical work.

:03:05.:03:09.

The enquiry has never been in crisis in terms of the 160-odd

:03:10.:03:12.

They have been getting on with their work very purposively

:03:13.:03:16.

and because they are committed to it.

:03:17.:03:27.

Tony and two other men who claim they, too, were abused by the same

:03:28.:03:30.

youth worker are now pursuing a civil action

:03:31.:03:33.

against Cardiff Council, who they believe employed the man.

:03:34.:03:35.

The council says it takes such allegations very seriously

:03:36.:03:38.

but cannot comment as the case is ongoing.

:03:39.:03:39.

Meanwhile, Tony is putting his faith and trust in the enquiry

:03:40.:03:42.

I am hopeful, that is all I can be, really.

:03:43.:04:00.

The number of people over 50 admitted to hospital

:04:01.:04:03.

for alcohol-related treatment has risen in the last five years,

:04:04.:04:05.

But Public Health Wales says that, overall, there's been a drop of 32%

:04:06.:04:09.

in the number of people hospitalised for alcohol misuse,

:04:10.:04:11.

Steel unions say a decision by Tata to replace its chairman came as

:04:12.:04:19.

Tata Sons, which own Tata Steel, have replaced Cyrus Mistry

:04:20.:04:23.

It has emerged Mr Mistry warned the business will have to write off

:04:24.:04:28.

investments totalling nearly $20 billion.

:04:29.:04:29.

Unions now want clarity on what Ratan Tata's appointment

:04:30.:04:31.

He is an experienced person who knows the business. But what we need

:04:32.:04:54.

to D C from MS strategy. What sort of strategy and we know following?

:04:55.:04:57.

Police have described a shop worker who fended off a man wielding

:04:58.:04:59.

a knife as "brave" and her colleagues say she is a "hero".

:05:00.:05:02.

This is the moment, captured on CCTV,

:05:03.:05:04.

when Paula Hooper was confronted by the masked man,

:05:05.:05:06.

She refuses, raises the alarm and gets out a small baseball bat,

:05:07.:05:10.

before chasing him out of the Post Office in

:05:11.:05:12.

Colleagues say her bravery was inspiring.

:05:13.:05:19.

I looked at the camera and I could see her then with a bat

:05:20.:05:23.

going for this guy, who obviously had a knife, so I thought, OK,

:05:24.:05:26.

I have to do something and as I was running around to aid

:05:27.:05:29.

So, I think I, kind of, made him aware that there

:05:30.:05:33.

was also someone else in the shop, as well.

:05:34.:05:35.

When you think about it afterwards and you realise the danger and it

:05:36.:05:39.

could have been a lot worse, as well.

:05:40.:05:40.

Like I said, she is the employee of the day, the month.

:05:41.:05:43.

I think rumours have started around that she's Wonder Woman!

:05:44.:05:49.

The RSPCA in Wales is bracing itself for thousands of calls

:05:50.:05:52.

reporting animal neglect over the next few months.

:05:53.:05:54.

Last winter, the charity received nearly 3,000 calls,

:05:55.:05:56.

more than half of them concerning dogs.

:05:57.:05:58.

It has launched a campaign, making people more aware of animals' needs.

:05:59.:06:04.

Two-year-old Mamich is one of many dogs nursed back to health

:06:05.:06:07.

by the RSPCA, who is now looking for a new home.

:06:08.:06:12.

He was brought to the RSPCA's animal centre here in Newport suffering

:06:13.:06:15.

from serious burns, but after treatment,

:06:16.:06:17.

As winter approaches, the charity is bracing itself

:06:18.:06:23.

for thousands more calls reporting animal neglect.

:06:24.:06:31.

In just four months to the end of January

:06:32.:06:33.

this year, the RSPCA in Wales received nearly 3,000 calls

:06:34.:06:35.

reporting animal neglect. Nearly 2,000 concerned dogs.

:06:36.:06:45.

RSPCA Cymru says the bad weather can make things worse for pets,

:06:46.:06:48.

Another annual problem is people giving pets

:06:49.:06:53.

The charity is calling its new campaign Love Animals,

:06:54.:06:59.

Hate Cruelty, to raise awareness of pets' needs.

:07:00.:07:06.

We urge people to do their homework before getting an animal, to make

:07:07.:07:09.

sure that they are equipped, they have the right environment

:07:10.:07:12.

and time and they can provide for that animal.

:07:13.:07:17.

If you are ready to get a pet, consider rehoming.

:07:18.:07:20.

There are animals at this RSPCA centre in Newport

:07:21.:07:24.

Last year the RSPCA rehomed more than 1,700 animals in Wales.

:07:25.:07:35.

But the number of neglected animals shows no sign of decreasing.

:07:36.:07:38.

Around 100 schoolgirls have been at an event in Deeside

:07:39.:07:40.

to encourage more of them to get into motorsport.

:07:41.:07:43.

It is part of the build-up to the Wales Rally GB,

:07:44.:07:45.

The campaign is called Dare To Be Different.

:07:46.:07:49.

We are focused on opening up the sport and inspiring young

:07:50.:07:52.

girls, to make them realise that this is not a world for boys.

:07:53.:07:55.

Sometimes, society's preconception says that only boys

:07:56.:07:57.

should be racing cars and in motorsport, but I

:07:58.:07:59.

actually had a fantastic career in motorsport and there are many

:08:00.:08:01.

successful woman working in the different areas of it.

:08:02.:08:07.

A look at the weather now, with Derek.

:08:08.:08:14.

No need for a winter coat, because it will on the mild side. Most

:08:15.:08:28.

places, dry overnight. The odd perch of mist and fog. Temperatures

:08:29.:08:38.

between 6-12dC overnight. Tomorrow, the odd spot of late rain or drizzle

:08:39.:08:45.

in the early morning. It should start to break and up during the

:08:46.:08:52.

course of the morning. Elsewhere, rain from the north of Scotland.

:08:53.:08:58.

Most other places drive. Fairly breezy particularly in the north.

:08:59.:09:06.

Tomorrow afternoon furrows, most places dry with the odd lakeshore a

:09:07.:09:11.

few than they are. Fiddly cloudy, but the odd sunny interval. A

:09:12.:09:18.

temperatures of 14-15dC. Into Friday, some red light green for the

:09:19.:09:25.

north and north-west. If you're lucky, a few glimpses of sunshine.

:09:26.:09:33.

You can see this front pushing through and keep an eye unless

:09:34.:09:36.

high-pressure, which will dominate the weather through the weekend.

:09:37.:09:42.

Last week trying unsettled. A lot of clothes alone. Should be mild.

:09:43.:09:50.

Should feel pleasant, but the rest of the odd mist and fog patch and

:09:51.:09:53.

moreover dry weather into next week. The Wales Report is on next,

:09:54.:09:55.

but from everyone on the Wales Today Nos da.

:09:56.:09:59.

Goodnight.
