Deceptively dangerous - an inquest hears of the tragic loss

:00:13.:00:14.

of a woman who drowned on the eve of her birthday.

:00:15.:00:18.

Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands,

:00:19.:00:21.

Also tonight: A blow for woman's football -

:00:22.:00:25.

People trying to save a Jersey woman who drowned last summer have told

:00:26.:00:37.

an inquest the sea conditions that night were some of

:00:38.:00:40.

Joy Godfray was swept out to sea on the eve of her 32nd birthday.

:00:41.:00:45.

Today's inquest heard that Joy was a "fairly good swimmer",

:00:46.:00:52.

who often swam at Green Island with her friend and

:00:53.:00:54.

On that night there was an orange tide warning, with large waves

:00:55.:01:00.

It is not clear whether Joy and her friend Austin

:01:01.:01:06.

They got the bus here and went for a swim.

:01:07.:01:11.

But they quickly got into difficulty.

:01:12.:01:14.

In video footage played to the inquest, a tourist

:01:15.:01:17.

who was filming the storm from roundabout here captured

:01:18.:01:20.

the moments before Joy was swept out to sea.

:01:21.:01:24.

In it, we see Joy and Austin in the water down here,

:01:25.:01:29.

struggling to stay on their feet as the waves bashed

:01:30.:01:32.

Witnesses say Joy was thrown a lifeline, but it

:01:33.:01:37.

It was an August weekend that claimed six lives in the seas

:01:38.:01:42.

around the British Isles, including one here in Jersey.

:01:43.:01:46.

This was when the rescue boat launched to find Joy.

:01:47.:01:52.

The man in the black T-shirt, who'd already saved a man

:01:53.:01:55.

from the water at Green Island, was telling crews where to find her.

:01:56.:01:59.

High tides and strong winds meant the sea was deceptively dangerous.

:02:00.:02:02.

They were odd conditions because it was a lovely summer's

:02:03.:02:04.

evening, but at the same time the sea was extraordinary

:02:05.:02:07.

At the seaside next to the beach, I'm sure it looked inviting.

:02:08.:02:13.

If you went out to any kind of depth it was devastating.

:02:14.:02:19.

One of the crew was tipped overboard as the fire rescue

:02:20.:02:25.

When they and the lifeboat crew found Joy, it was so rough,

:02:26.:02:31.

the coxswain made the decision not to try to land, but to take Joy

:02:32.:02:35.

Joy's family say they're devastated at the tragic loss,

:02:36.:02:40.

and repeatedly during the inquest made a point to thank those

:02:41.:02:44.

The inquest heard today how serious conditions were that night.

:02:45.:02:50.

Dr David Howell, an RNLI medic who was onboard one of the lifeboats

:02:51.:02:53.

and had tried to resuscitate Joy, described them as some of the worst

:02:54.:02:56.

While coxswain Andrew Hibbs described how, on two occasions,

:02:57.:03:02.

the all-weather lifeboat nearly rolled onto the inshore boat.

:03:03.:03:04.

He said, "The public don't realise, on high tide,

:03:05.:03:07.

Joy's friend Austin, who'd been with her in the sea,

:03:08.:03:15.

told the inquest they hadn't discussed the conditions

:03:16.:03:17.

when they arrived at the beach, they just went straight in.

:03:18.:03:20.

The coroner, Mark Harris, concluded by saying Joy's death was "tragic",

:03:21.:03:23.

and praised the courage and professionalism of all those

:03:24.:03:26.

He recorded her death as death by drowning.

:03:27.:03:32.

A prolific paedophile who used to live in Guernsey has been jailed

:03:33.:03:35.

for life after admitting a catalogue of child abuse.

:03:36.:03:38.

Mark Frost, also known as Andrew Tracey, pleaded guilty

:03:39.:03:40.

to 45 offences against young boys in England and Thailand.

:03:41.:03:42.

This afternoon a judge at the Old Bailey described his

:03:43.:03:45.

actions as "horrific and deeply disturbing" and gave him 13

:03:46.:03:49.

concurrent life sentences, with a minimum term of 16 years.

:03:50.:03:52.

There are fears the full scale of Frost's crimes have yet

:03:53.:03:57.

to emerge, and police in the UK and Guernsey, where he lived

:03:58.:04:00.

in the 1960s and again in the late 1990s, are urging other victims

:04:01.:04:03.

to come forward by contacting either Guernsey Police directly

:04:04.:04:07.

or the dedicated NSPCC helpline that has been set up.

:04:08.:04:20.

The 2017 women's football Muratti between Jersey and Guernsey is off

:04:21.:04:24.

because the Greens can't find enough players.

:04:25.:04:26.

Our sports editor Tim Pryor joined me earlier to explain why

:04:27.:04:29.

Guernsey FA weren't putting up a team.

:04:30.:04:36.

The basic answer is a lack of players.

:04:37.:04:39.

To play in the women's Muratti you have to be registered to a club

:04:40.:04:43.

A lot of the top Guernsey players play in Hampshire in the UK.

:04:44.:04:51.

They are affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association,

:04:52.:04:55.

and not the Guernsey Football Association.

:04:56.:05:00.

They say it is not right to blame the Hampshire FA

:05:01.:05:03.

and that there is plenty of enthusiasm amongst

:05:04.:05:06.

In recent years it has become one-sided to Jersey.

:05:07.:05:13.

Yes, last year's was a 9-0 win, so really one-sided.

:05:14.:05:16.

In fact, Jersey have won 14 out of the last 15 games.

:05:17.:05:22.

It is a shame because Jersey would have been hoping

:05:23.:05:33.

to use this Muratti as part of the prep for the Island Games.

:05:34.:05:37.

What is the Jersey Football Association saying about it?

:05:38.:05:39.

They say they are disappointed, but they are hopeful this can be

:05:40.:05:42.

reinstated maybe as soon as next season.

:05:43.:05:43.

I understand they are also trying to work to understand this women's

:05:44.:05:50.

-- replace this Muratti with another game, and bring a high profile side

:05:51.:05:53.

to the island as part of those preparations for the Island

:05:54.:05:56.

The lack of attractions in Guernsey for families in wet weather has been

:05:57.:06:00.

But that could change after planners approved major changes to one

:06:01.:06:04.

Mark Inchley's been finding out more.

:06:05.:06:07.

He's the little yellow plane with a big heart that captured

:06:08.:06:09.

the hearts of islanders, and even spawned a series

:06:10.:06:11.

But, since flying his last ever flight two years ago,

:06:12.:06:15.

the next chapter for Joey has been far from clear with

:06:16.:06:18.

But that's all set to change with new plans for Oatlands Village,

:06:19.:06:23.

which include a permanent home for Joey.

:06:24.:06:25.

Part of that is a 2000 square metre play barn,

:06:26.:06:27.

a play area for children from 0- 12.

:06:28.:06:31.

Contained within that would be the resting home for Joey.

:06:32.:06:40.

There have to be places for people to go when it is wet and rainy,

:06:41.:06:44.

and if they can see that there is somewhere for their children

:06:45.:06:50.

to play here, even if the weather turns nasty, then it

:06:51.:06:53.

So good news for Joey and his fans but, with a drop in the number

:06:54.:06:58.

of people visiting Guernsey last year, will the new-look Oatlands be

:06:59.:07:00.

enough to plug the gap when it comes to what some perceive to be the lack

:07:01.:07:04.

of rainy-day and tourist attractions for families in the island?

:07:05.:07:06.

There is not very much for visitors or children to go to.

:07:07.:07:11.

It is a lot more for children to do, and it would be a lot more appealing

:07:12.:07:15.

for families to come to Guernsey, definitely.

:07:16.:07:17.

So, some way to go before the work here is finished,

:07:18.:07:20.

but also some excitement about what's to come.

:07:21.:07:22.

And, it seems, Joey's story is far from over.

:07:23.:07:31.

Some "unique" vehicles have come up for sale in Guernsey,

:07:32.:07:33.

and one thing's for sure, they'd certainly make

:07:34.:07:35.

Penny Elderfield went to take a look.

:07:36.:07:40.

The answer to a mid-life crisis perhaps for others.

:07:41.:07:45.

But if that one's not for you, perhaps an old sewage cart

:07:46.:08:04.

States Worsk is auctioning off a collection of its old vehicles.

:08:05.:08:10.

They are taking sealed bids from anyone who'd

:08:11.:08:12.

We are probably focusing mainly at the commercial sector,

:08:13.:08:19.

It may provide spares to an existing fleet.

:08:20.:08:28.

There is quite a unique variety of vehicles that we are trying

:08:29.:08:32.

to dispose of here, so it probably is quite a limited market.

:08:33.:08:37.

If you're interested you can get in touch with States Works and come

:08:38.:08:40.

Although I wouldn't rate your chances of being allowed to take one

:08:41.:08:47.

That's your news this Wednesday evening, BBC Radio Guernsey

:08:48.:09:01.

Good evening. We have happy few showers around the last couple of

:09:02.:09:09.

days. This was from one of our weather watchers. A largely dry

:09:10.:09:13.

but there is still a risk of a feud but there is still a risk of a feud

:09:14.:09:18.

showers, and definitely feeling cold tomorrow, even colder air than we

:09:19.:09:22.

have had today. The reason for that is an easterly wind which gradually

:09:23.:09:26.

creeps into the night and today tomorrow, cold air coming in from

:09:27.:09:30.

southern parts of Scandinavia, that process well underway by the end of

:09:31.:09:34.

tomorrow and certainly with us on Friday to. Daytime temperatures only

:09:35.:09:40.

three or four above freezing. Process today, a subtle change in

:09:41.:09:47.

the wind direction, and we may draw air up from Spain and Portugal that

:09:48.:09:51.

comes around the ridge of high pressure, so hopefully starting to

:09:52.:09:55.

lift temperatures. Overnight, the chance of a shower. The wind turned

:09:56.:10:02.

easterly, freshening by the morning. Night-time temperatures down to

:10:03.:10:05.

three degrees, the possibility of Frost first thing tomorrow. More

:10:06.:10:10.

clout than we have seen recently tomorrow, the odd shower which could

:10:11.:10:17.

be sleet. Five or 6 degrees will be the maximum temperature that feeling

:10:18.:10:21.

colder because of the easterly winds. They continue to feed in even

:10:22.:10:26.

lower temperatures by the time we get into Friday, so we are looking

:10:27.:10:31.

at a cold feel to the air for Friday and Saturday. And the risk of a feud

:10:32.:10:38.

wintry showers. Quite a brisk wind on Friday. By Sunday, slightly less

:10:39.:10:42.

cold air and generally a lot of clout.

:10:43.:10:53.

We will be back at 6:30pm tomorrow night.

:10:54.:10:55.

cloudy and Ben Rich will take you through the bigger picture.

:10:56.:11:08.

Good evening. Over the next few days I suspect it's going to feel like we

:11:09.:11:14.

have been plunged into the deep freeze. Cold weather on the way and

:11:15.:11:21.

not necessarily crisp cold weather, with blue skies. A lot of cloud,

:11:22.:11:25.

there was some sunshine today across parts of west Wales, for instance.

:11:26.:11:29.

That lifted temperatures up to 11. But further east as you can see from

:11:30.:11:33.

the picture, there was a lot of cloud feeding in and that pegged

:11:34.:11:36.

temperatures down into

:11:37.:11:37.
