With your news now for the East Midlands, I'm Maurice Flynn.

:00:11.:00:13.

First tonight, the police have confirmed that a Derby man

:00:14.:00:15.

has joined a terrorist group in Syria.

:00:16.:00:17.

Kabir Ahmed is thought to bd in a training camp run by ISIS,

:00:18.:00:20.

the organisation that's swept through large parts of Iraq.

:00:21.:00:24.

I've come across Islamic hardliner Kabir Ahmed before, in 2012.

:00:25.:00:33.

He dodged my questions after being found guilty

:00:34.:00:34.

in a landmark court case of inciting hatred of homosdxuals.

:00:35.:00:38.

He had handed out offensive leaflets outside this Derby mosque.

:00:39.:00:42.

He also put the flyers through letter boxes nearby.

:00:43.:00:45.

Now he is in Syria, at an ISIS base, calling himself Abu Sumayyah.

:00:46.:00:53.

Everybody has got their namd on the list.

:00:54.:00:56.

Everybody is forcing them to put their name and push it tp.

:00:57.:01:01.

You know, everybody wants to fight for the sake of Allah.

:01:02.:01:04.

Here, I met an imam visiting Derby to teach in Islamic classes,

:01:05.:01:08.

trying to influence young mhnds for the better.

:01:09.:01:11.

The media, instead of reallx calming things down, the media is, xou know,

:01:12.:01:15.

exploiting things and probably as well provoking those views.

:01:16.:01:20.

speaking out against violence strongly enough?

:01:21.:01:25.

Back in 2012, Kabir Ahmed s`id he was just a Muslim doing his duty.

:01:26.:01:33.

The bread maker Hovis has revealed it's to close

:01:34.:01:43.

its bakery in Leicester with the loss of 200 jobs.

:01:44.:01:46.

Workers were told today the company's site

:01:47.:01:49.

just off Troon Way will shut early next year.

:01:50.:01:51.

Support staff will be affected, as well as those who produce the bread.

:01:52.:01:54.

Union officials say they'll do all they can

:01:55.:01:56.

No`one from the company has been available for commdnt.

:01:57.:02:00.

Meanwhile, around 200 police officers could be let go

:02:01.:02:02.

in Leicestershire as the force tries to deliver on deep financial cuts.

:02:03.:02:08.

It's likely to mean a rise in civilians being used

:02:09.:02:10.

In a moment, we'll hear frol the Chief Constable,

:02:11.:02:14.

but first here's a look at the scale of the cuts.

:02:15.:02:18.

Times are changing for Leicestershire Police.

:02:19.:02:20.

After already cutting ?20 mhllion from its budget since 2010,

:02:21.:02:24.

the force now needs to save another 15.4 million by 2017.

:02:25.:02:30.

recorded crimes have fallen over the last four years.

:02:31.:02:35.

And today the force promised a renewed focus on local policing,

:02:36.:02:39.

Virtually nobody in the public will see any difference.

:02:40.:02:45.

They will still see neighbourhood policing.

:02:46.:02:47.

They will still have the same level, or indeed hhgher,

:02:48.:02:49.

For them, what really matters is that their home, their c`r,

:02:50.:02:54.

their families and their local neighbourhood is kept safe.

:02:55.:02:57.

I'm certain what the chief has planned will deliver better

:02:58.:03:01.

The force will now have to show the changes will only affect how

:03:02.:03:04.

officers do their jobs, not public safety.

:03:05.:03:08.

So, Chief Constable, how many uniformed officers

:03:09.:03:10.

Well, to make sure the books balance going forwards

:03:11.:03:14.

and that we can give local people safe,

:03:15.:03:16.

we are going to lose about 300 people

:03:17.:03:18.

There will probably be 200 or so plus of those

:03:19.:03:22.

But what that means is we c`n then deploy mixed teams

:03:23.:03:27.

of police officers, police community support officers

:03:28.:03:29.

and accredited investigativd assistants.

:03:30.:03:32.

My job is to maximise the public safety

:03:33.:03:34.

that we can get out of the budget we have got.

:03:35.:03:37.

Clearly, the budget is reducing and we'll be getting smaller as

:03:38.:03:39.

an organisation but we will still be keeping local people safd.

:03:40.:03:42.

If you say you are taking away 200 uniformed officers,

:03:43.:03:45.

how confident are you that you can keep people safe?

:03:46.:03:48.

Won't the public would be rhght in thinking their safety is in danger?

:03:49.:03:52.

We have shown in the last four or five years and Her Majesty's

:03:53.:03:57.

Inspectorate of Constabularx has reported on the fact that wd have

:03:58.:04:00.

taken ?20 million out of thd budget and in doing that,

:04:01.:04:03.

crime and anti`social behavhour has dropped

:04:04.:04:05.

and public confidence has stayed high.

:04:06.:04:08.

Of course, I would like more money but we are taking

:04:09.:04:11.

our share of austerity and that means there will be less of us.

:04:12.:04:15.

Chief Constable, can we expdct to see civilians taking statemdnts

:04:16.:04:18.

We can anticipate that investigative support assistants,

:04:19.:04:24.

who will be properly skilled and trained,

:04:25.:04:27.

will be involved in the investigation of crile.

:04:28.:04:30.

That is pretty commonplace across the country now.

:04:31.:04:33.

Certainly, we have already got some investigative assistants

:04:34.:04:35.

in place and people can be `ssured that they are very professional

:04:36.:04:39.

Simon Cole, the Chief Const`ble of Leicestershire police thdre.

:04:40.:04:47.

It's claimed house prices in the East Midlands rose on average

:04:48.:04:49.

by more than ?10,000 in the first half of this ydar.

:04:50.:04:53.

says the average value of a home in the region is now ?180,000

:04:54.:05:00.

That's an increase of almost 6% this year.

:05:01.:05:05.

As of today, BBC Radio Derbx is broadcasting in digital clarity

:05:06.:05:09.

The station is now transmitting on DAB.

:05:10.:05:22.

at Derby's iPro stadium earlier today.

:05:23.:05:25.

Now, two of the most endangdred animals in the world

:05:26.:05:27.

have been born here in the East Midlands.

:05:28.:05:29.

Leciestershire's Twycross Zoo is celebrating the arrival

:05:30.:05:31.

There are only 50 of these big cats in the wild so, understandably,

:05:32.:05:35.

their birth has caused quitd a stir in the conservation world.

:05:36.:05:38.

What is more important is how few there are in the wild

:05:39.:05:41.

and what a significant contribution even having two cubs is.

:05:42.:05:43.

and vital to the future survival of this species.

:05:44.:05:47.

So that is what makes it most important.

:05:48.:05:49.

As we've seen the Commonwealth Games officially opened

:05:50.:05:51.

Duffield squash player Nick Matthew proudly led out Team England

:05:52.:05:54.

in front of 40,000 spectators in the stadium,

:05:55.:05:56.

with another billion watching on the TV!

:05:57.:06:01.

So what are the East Midlands chances of medals?

:06:02.:06:03.

Jeremy Nicholas has a round`up of our athletes to watch out for.

:06:04.:06:13.

Raising the bar in the gymnastics will be Notthngham's

:06:14.:06:15.

European champion, Becky Downie and Olympic medallist Sam Oldham.

:06:16.:06:17.

It will be a squash to get ` seat in front of the telly

:06:18.:06:21.

at Duffield Squash Club, when club members Laura Massaro

:06:22.:06:23.

husband`and`wife team Nick `nd Gabby Adcock from Sutton in Ashfidld

:06:24.:06:28.

hope to net a medal in the badminton.

:06:29.:06:30.

Hucknall hurdler Andy Turner has overcome a lot of obstacles

:06:31.:06:33.

to defend the title he won in Delhi.

:06:34.:06:35.

Long Eaton's Will Sharman is one of those up against him.

:06:36.:06:39.

And city of Derby's Adam Pe`ty is set to make a splash

:06:40.:06:42.

in the breast stroke after two British records already this season

:06:43.:06:46.

and Ollie Hynd from Kirkby In Ashfield

:06:47.:06:47.

hopes to add to his medal collection.

:06:48.:06:51.

So what will life be like for our athletes during the games?

:06:52.:06:54.

Mark Shardlow's taken a look around the athlete's villagd.

:06:55.:06:57.

Day by day, the village is filling up,

:06:58.:06:59.

each nation making it a home from home.

:07:00.:07:08.

and getting into the spirit of things.

:07:09.:07:11.

The village is slowly slowlx, gradually now filling up.

:07:12.:07:13.

When we got here, it was a little bit sparse, now it is

:07:14.:07:16.

getting a little bit more occupied so, yeah, the atmosphere is growing.

:07:17.:07:19.

The boys have got their house together and have been playhng

:07:20.:07:22.

cards a lot and the girls h`ve been painting each other's nails.

:07:23.:07:25.

I have done red with an England flag.

:07:26.:07:29.

We were all up until 10pm, waiting for each other's nails to dry.

:07:30.:07:33.

Really amazing atmosphere and great to see everything

:07:34.:07:35.

and everything going on, there is a lot of different things

:07:36.:07:37.

to experience, we have a lot of different athletes here.

:07:38.:07:40.

The hub of the village is the dining hall.

:07:41.:07:42.

With around 4,500 athletes `nd all of the support staff, they dstimate

:07:43.:07:45.

20,000 meals a day will be served, catering for all tastes.

:07:46.:07:49.

Team England is the biggest team here.

:07:50.:07:51.

There has been a huge investment in sports science,

:07:52.:07:54.

physio and recovery equipment in the lions' den.

:07:55.:07:58.

It is all about making sure that the athlete stays as well

:07:59.:08:01.

If a problem does happen, we treat it early

:08:02.:08:05.

and get them back to the field of play.

:08:06.:08:07.

And we can move people from off the podium onto the podium

:08:08.:08:10.

and, more importantly, from bronze into gold.

:08:11.:08:13.

So the athletes are here, the venues are ready

:08:14.:08:15.

and an estimated 1.5 billion people will be watching

:08:16.:08:19.

as Glasgow hosts the 20th Commonwealth Games.

:08:20.:08:27.

But with your weather now, here's Anna.

:08:28.:08:35.

Thank you. It was perfect wdather for the opening ceremony in Glasgow.

:08:36.:08:41.

The dry, fine weather continues now for the next few days. Stayhng very

:08:42.:08:45.

warm indeed. Dry with plentx of sunshine. This evening, we have had

:08:46.:08:52.

dry conditions and it will remain so for the rest of the night. Clear

:08:53.:08:56.

skies around. A little bit of low cloud leading in from the North Sea

:08:57.:08:59.

as we head towards dawn. It is a warm night with lows of 15 Celsius.

:09:00.:09:04.

Thursday morning starts with the low cloud but that starts to burn away

:09:05.:09:09.

quite quickly and advice like we had on Wednesday, we will see plenty of

:09:10.:09:12.

sunshine in the afternoon. Feeling great warm in the sunshine with

:09:13.:09:16.

highs of 27 Celsius and a north`easterly breeze. The settled

:09:17.:09:19.

theme continues as we go into Friday. There may be a little bit of

:09:20.:09:24.

cloud around but plenty of sunshine to be had around with through the

:09:25.:09:27.

day. Now for the outlook for the next few days followed by the

:09:28.:09:29.

passion of forecasts. of some showers and at Wilton cooler

:09:30.:09:32.

from the north. The national picture comes from Philip Avery.

:09:33.:09:38.

Unusually, I can say good morning. Wednesday has been noticeable for a

:09:39.:09:48.

number of reasons. From a meteorological

:09:49.:09:49.
