Hello and welcome to the programme. Iraq. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Coming up in Look East tonight, memories of Hannah Witheridge, | :00:08. | :00:10.
the Norfolk student murdered in Thailand. | :00:11. | :00:16.
Time is the ultimate healer. We hope her family can find peace as well, | :00:17. | :00:25.
and all her many friends. I don t have much faith they will c`tch the | :00:26. | :00:26.
killers. Tonight, Thai police insist they | :00:27. | :00:28.
are close to making an arrest. Essex Police under investig`tion | :00:29. | :00:31.

Essex, that is very challenging for the police. | :00:44. | :00:45.
A simple blood test to monitor the state of a tumour, the cutthng`edge | :00:46. | :00:48.
research from this region to make life easier for cancer patidnts | :00:49. | :01:09.
First tonight, detectives htnting the killer of the Norfolk student | :01:10. | :01:13.
Hannah Witheridge in Thailand say they're close to making an `rrest. | :01:14. | :01:21.
But her university friends have told Look East they have little | :01:22. | :01:23.
This week, Hannah would have been starting | :01:24. | :01:30.
the second year of a master's degree at the University of Essex. | :01:31. | :01:33.
Her friends say her death nhne days ago will spur them on this xear | :01:34. | :01:36.
In a moment, the latest on the investigation | :01:37. | :01:38.
from the BBC's correspondent in Thailand Jonathan Head. | :01:39. | :01:40.
But first this report from Debbie Tubby. | :01:41. | :01:45.
Matt D'Arby, his girlfriend Lucy Dunkly, and Abigail Rae werd good | :01:46. | :01:47.
Matt and Lucy shared a house with her in Colchester. | :01:48. | :01:51.
They found it hard to come to terms with her death. | :01:52. | :01:54.
I think hopefully her familx can find peace and all her many friends. | :01:55. | :02:04.
Hannah Witheridge and David Miller from Jersey were murdered | :02:05. | :02:15.
Thai police are said to be expanding their DNA testing to | :02:16. | :02:20.
And whether that comes tomorrow or in a week's time, | :02:21. | :02:30.
These photos were taken in Thailand just before her death. | :02:31. | :02:34.
She was enjoying a three`wedk holiday with three other | :02:35. | :02:38.
Would get updates on SnapCh`t, where she was staying and stuff lhke that. | :02:39. | :02:43.
And that she was having a good time out there. | :02:44. | :02:47.
Like, this is my view over breakfast this morning. | :02:48. | :02:50.
Like, hope you're having fun in Colchester! | :02:51. | :02:53.
She was due back at Essex University this week. | :02:54. | :02:56.
Everyone felt the loss and just going in, it was | :02:57. | :02:59.
And just saying how they couldn't believe it. | :03:00. | :03:05.
Hannah Witheridge had met David Miller while on holid`y. | :03:06. | :03:07.
They were caught on CCTV holding hands just | :03:08. | :03:09.
It's believed he may have tried to stop the attack. | :03:10. | :03:15.
I'm really grateful, if that is the case that he was trying to help her. | :03:16. | :03:19.
The girls that were out there said that he was just lovelx. | :03:20. | :03:23.
Obviously, really smitten with Hannah, | :03:24. | :03:24.
I think this will really sptr us on to get through the year to do the | :03:25. | :03:31.
And be there for her family as well in whatever way we can. | :03:32. | :03:37.
All the students from Hannah's masters degree are hoping | :03:38. | :03:39.
The police investigation in Thailand has moved from the island of Koh Tao | :03:40. | :03:49.
The police are looking for a man who left the area shortly | :03:50. | :03:55.
They say they are close to laking an arrest. | :03:56. | :03:58.
BBC Correspondent Jonathan Head sent this report. | :03:59. | :04:02.
They will make an arrest soon although thex're not | :04:03. | :04:06.
But it does seem to be conndcted to how soon they get DNA tests done. | :04:07. | :04:12.
There is one very powerful family who own a bar at which David | :04:13. | :04:15.
and Hannah were seen in the hours before they were killed, | :04:16. | :04:18.
and where they are reported to have got involved in an argument. | :04:19. | :04:21.
A lot of people on the island talk about th`t bar | :04:22. | :04:23.
Members of that family were questioned | :04:24. | :04:28.
The owner of the AC Bar, whdre the victims were, and his brothdr, who | :04:29. | :04:34.
was identified by police as a man in some closed circuit television | :04:35. | :04:37.
footage running, late at night, around the time of the murddrs | :04:38. | :04:43.
The man they are hunting in Bangkok, he is believed to be the son | :04:44. | :04:49.
of the bar owner who was qudstioned yesterday. | :04:50. | :04:52.
Some people say he might be an assistant, | :04:53. | :04:55.
He vanished within hours of the bodies being discovered and the | :04:56. | :04:59.
police say they have a manhtnt on to track him down here in the capital. | :05:00. | :05:02.
Of course, once they find hhm, they will need to question him. | :05:03. | :05:05.
And take DNA samples from hhm as well. | :05:06. | :05:07.
And that is the point at whhch they clearly believe this is a ldad. | :05:08. | :05:10.
But until they've got him and they've taken most DNA samples, | :05:11. | :05:14.
and analyse the DNA samples they took from the other two members of | :05:15. | :05:18.
the family, they cannot poshtively identify them yet as being connected | :05:19. | :05:21.
to the murder, but there ard, I should say, optimistic sotnds | :05:22. | :05:24.
The police in Essex are under investig`tion | :05:25. | :05:31.
again for the way they've h`ndled a case of domestic abuse. | :05:32. | :05:34.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is looking | :05:35. | :05:36.
at why the force took a month to arrest a man who was | :05:37. | :05:39.
Essex Police were heavily criticised following four domestic murders that | :05:40. | :05:46.
But in June last year, the force was praised for making improvemdnts | :05:47. | :05:54.
80 emergency calls are made to Essex Police every day reporting | :05:55. | :05:58.
And the force currently has a list of 130 perpetrators in the county, | :05:59. | :06:05.
How Essex Police response to domestic violence under the | :06:06. | :06:21.
spotlight again today. It h`s emerged the Independent Polhce | :06:22. | :06:22.
Complaints Commission is looking into a complaint from a wom`n in | :06:23. | :06:28.
Southend. Despite a court restraining order banning contact, a | :06:29. | :06:31.
man had messaged her on sochal media and visited her house. But he was | :06:32. | :06:36.
all `` only arrested one month later when he breached the order `gain. | :06:37. | :06:41.
The investigation began last month. It is looking into any delax for | :06:42. | :06:47.
arresting the man. That is `lso looking into whether a risk | :06:48. | :06:50.
assessment was carried out. Although it remains to be seen whethdr the | :06:51. | :06:55.
latest report finds failings, the IPCC has criticised Essex Police in | :06:56. | :06:59.
the past. It has said the force ignored warnings that these three | :07:00. | :07:08.
women were in danger. All three and Christine chamber 's Mac datghter | :07:09. | :07:12.
were murdered. Improving thd force's response to domestic | :07:13. | :07:17.
violence is a personal priority of the Chief Constable. The cotnty s | :07:18. | :07:19.
Police and Crime Commissiondr says it is getting better. The police are | :07:20. | :07:29.
making extensive use of the protection notices which kedp the | :07:30. | :07:33.
ball safe. They are at the cutting edge of new approaches but we are on | :07:34. | :07:39.
a journey. There won't be a change overnight. It is likely to be | :07:40. | :07:43.
several months before the l`test reporters published. | :07:44. | :07:47.
The Suffolk brewer Greene Khng has had a bid to take over one | :07:48. | :07:50.
It's part of a huge expansion programme in recent years. | :07:51. | :07:53.
They have bid ?660 million pounds for the pub chain Sphrit | :07:54. | :07:58.
They now have until next month to make an improved offer. | :07:59. | :08:11.
3500 people work for Greene King. That is dwarfed by the comp`ny's | :08:12. | :08:20.
23,000 employees nationwide. The Greene King of 20 years ago is | :08:21. | :08:24.
virtually unrecognisable. The company operates nearly 2000 pubs | :08:25. | :08:29.
and restaurants. It operates the hungry horse chain and at the top | :08:30. | :08:39.
end of the market, Loch Fynd, and its appetite shows no signs of | :08:40. | :08:49.
waning. And now the Spirit company. This investment specialist says that | :08:50. | :08:53.
Greene King's expansion has been driven by food. A lot of people | :08:54. | :08:58.
might be surprised about thd brands of Spirit but from a financhal sense | :08:59. | :09:02.
there is lots of synergies that can be made between the two. Sphrit has | :09:03. | :09:07.
an excellent footprint, the locations of its pubs around the | :09:08. | :09:11.
country are the sorts of thhngs that Greene King wants to expand into. | :09:12. | :09:16.
Since 2005, Greene King's acquisitions have come thick and | :09:17. | :09:20.
fast. Barely a year has gond by without a takeover to add to its | :09:21. | :09:25.
growing portfolio. With growth come tensions. Recently Greene Khng was | :09:26. | :09:30.
resized or trying to rebrand local brand signs a plus in which it has | :09:31. | :09:33.
reviewed. It is no longer a regional brewer. But that doesn't matter to | :09:34. | :09:42.
this pub owner. We believe passionately in local product. These | :09:43. | :09:48.
are truly regarded as local. And the service we obtain from the local | :09:49. | :09:52.
suppliers, including Greene King, is second to none. Greene King's first | :09:53. | :09:57.
off of ?660 million was fred but by Spirit. A second improved offer is | :09:58. | :10:03.
widely expected. It has unthl mid`October to make a final offer or | :10:04. | :10:05.
walk away. The ferry route linking Essdx with | :10:06. | :10:07.
Denmark will end this weekend DFDS Seaways says it's scrapping the | :10:08. | :10:10.
service between Harwich and Esbjerg Let's go live to Harwich now, | :10:11. | :10:16.
and our business corresponddnt This very low and well`to`do people | :10:17. | :10:44.

longer competitive. Take a closer look. This is the last passdnger | :10:53. | :10:58.
ferry service to Scandinavi`. The route has been in operation since | :10:59. | :11:06.
1875 but on Sunday the final sailing will be made. Over the years | :11:07. | :11:10.
passenger numbers have falldn and thief for `` Ferry has found it | :11:11. | :11:13.
difficult to compete with btdget airlines. Many passengers are happy | :11:14. | :11:18.
to fly but many others, those with cars, for example, are not. | :11:19. | :11:22.
People like Roger Moran of Southwold. | :11:23. | :11:23.
His wife, Hela, is Danish, and the couple are regular tsers | :11:24. | :11:26.
It is going to be very inconvenient for caravanners and motorholes to go | :11:27. | :11:30.
to Denmark, and it will cause them a longer trip, involving | :11:31. | :11:34.
a couple of days via Calais and Dover, and that will be bad news. | :11:35. | :11:43.
DFDS said that under new EU rules, ferry operators will have to use | :11:44. | :11:47.
That would cost ?2 million to implement on the Harwich service | :11:48. | :11:53.
The service has been under pressure for a while. | :11:54. | :11:58.
We have seen the end of duty`free shopping some xears | :11:59. | :12:02.
ago, freight and passenger traffic has been reducing over the course | :12:03. | :12:06.
of time, and with cost rises coming in next year, we believe th`t it | :12:07. | :12:09.
DFDS dropped a ferry servicd to Cuxhaven in Germany in 2005. | :12:10. | :12:16.
The end of the Esbjerg routd will leave Harwich with just one ferry | :12:17. | :12:19.
operator, Stenna Line, which goes to the Hook of Holland. | :12:20. | :12:23.
Its passenger numbers have hncreased since the introduction | :12:24. | :12:25.
In future, the Morans face a much longer journey to get to | :12:26. | :12:30.
Denmark through Dover involving a marathon drive on the continent. | :12:31. | :12:35.
They predict the end of the Harwich service will cut the number | :12:36. | :12:38.
of Scandinavian tourists who visit the East. | :12:39. | :12:47.
Detectives investigating thd murder of James Attfield in Colchester have | :12:48. | :12:49.
The 19`year`old is being questioned on suspicion of lurder. | :12:50. | :12:52.
James Attfield was found with more than 100 knife wounds near | :12:53. | :12:55.
So far, ten people have been arrestdd. | :12:56. | :13:12.
Still to come tonight, the pressure's rising as thd UK s | :13:13. | :13:14.
biggest collection of barometers goes up for s`le. | :13:15. | :13:16.
And the autumn season gets under way at Newmarket. | :13:17. | :13:19.
We're looking ahead to the Cambridgeshire Meeting | :13:20. | :13:20.
and some of the best young horses in the country. | :13:21. | :13:33.
330,000 people in the UK ard diagnosed with cancer every year. | :13:34. | :13:36.
Put another way, one person every two minutes. | :13:37. | :13:38.
It's a disease that touches most of our lives. | :13:39. | :13:41.
Scientists in this region are at the forefront of cancer research, | :13:42. | :13:47.
don't need painful biopsies, or expensive scans. | :13:48. | :14:10.
Part of me thought why is this happening to me? | :14:11. | :14:13.
I'm 33 years old, I've got a one`year`old child. | :14:14. | :14:17.
Things like that don't happen to people like me. | :14:18. | :14:20.
But you deal with it and although it is horrific, you just get on with it | :14:21. | :14:26.
because that's what you havd to do, especially when you've got children. | :14:27. | :14:29.
During treatment, Victoria was subjected to bhopsies, | :14:30. | :14:35.
CT scans, MRIs, all means to see the disease's progress. | :14:36. | :14:41.
But now a Cambridge life schence start`up | :14:42. | :14:44.
Through a simple test showing tiny fragments of the cancerous tumour. | :14:45. | :16:41.
The trainer John Gosden has entered 16 horses, and is qtietly | :16:42. | :16:45.
Our Sports Editor Jonathan Park has been out with him on the gallops. | :16:46. | :16:53.
It's the time of year when Newmarket looks to the future, searchhng | :16:54. | :16:56.
for new champions to graduate from the gallops to the racdcourse. | :16:57. | :17:01.
Winning on the Rowley Mile hs a distant dream for some | :17:02. | :17:04.
but in John Gosden's ring, many make the grade. | :17:05. | :17:07.
We have had some luck down the years, as you know. | :17:08. | :17:10.
You've got to have the right horses, but we've got a couple | :17:11. | :17:13.
in Cambridgeshire, and I thhnk Cornrow is doing particularly well. | :17:14. | :17:15.
Newmarket's former champion trainer is enjoying another fine se`son | :17:16. | :17:19.
He could become the Cambridgeshire meeting's most successful ever | :17:20. | :17:22.
trainer if he saddles another two whnners. | :17:23. | :17:25.
Something he did seven times with racing's latest star Kingman | :17:26. | :17:29.
but a throat infection has finished his season and career. | :17:30. | :17:32.
Instead, he is retiring to the same stud as Henry Cecil's | :17:33. | :17:35.
I think it would have been ` great race over a mile between thdm. | :17:36. | :17:41.
At six we would have had the advantage, and at the mhle, he | :17:42. | :17:44.
But over a mile, it would h`ve been a fascinating affair. | :17:45. | :17:49.
I can't talk to Henry, I usdd to stand here and watch Frankel with | :17:50. | :17:52.
him, but I'll have to check with him one day what he thinks. | :17:53. | :17:55.
Racing needs the big stars like Frankel or Kingman | :17:56. | :17:57.
Those kinds of horses are stand out from the crowd. | :17:58. | :18:02.
The search is on now to find one of the new stars of the futtre. | :18:03. | :18:05.
We might just see one make a breakthrough | :18:06. | :18:07.
We are coming to that period of the year where the next tranche | :18:08. | :18:12.
of high`class horses are showing their worth, going into winter for | :18:13. | :18:15.
Then, of course, we've got the fantastic | :18:16. | :18:18.
Cambridge Handicap, a race that has been run for over 150 years. | :18:19. | :18:22.
We've got some very high`cl`ss two`year`old races coming up, | :18:23. | :18:26.
looking to be the stars of the future. | :18:27. | :18:27.
There are 23 races over the next three days. | :18:28. | :18:30.
The highlight, Saturday's Cambridgeshire H`ndicap, | :18:31. | :18:32.
which dates back to 1839, featuring over 30 horses. | :18:33. | :18:37.
20,000 racegoers are expectdd and John Gosden hopes to be in the | :18:38. | :18:40.
winner's enclosure as he bids to become the King of Cambridgdshire. | :18:41. | :18:51.
In the football last night, MK Dons won, and are through to | :18:52. | :18:54.
the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time. | :18:55. | :18:56.
They lost 1`0 to Shrewsbury from League Two. | :18:57. | :19:09.
MK Dons made headlines with their heroics over man `` Manchester City. | :19:10. | :19:16.
Against Bradford, they showdd it was no fluke. Two goals from thd top | :19:17. | :19:20.
drawer from one of the Football League 's finest finishes. He is on | :19:21. | :19:24.
loan from Arsenal and he gave the lead after five minutes with this | :19:25. | :19:28.
brilliant turn and shot. And then finished a one`on`one in thd dying | :19:29. | :19:32.
minutes after this speech pdrfect pass. The mess than two months, he's | :19:33. | :19:37.
scored nine goals and the MK Dons are reaping the rewards. We know | :19:38. | :19:42.
what he can do. He has added goals to the pace. He has eight or nine | :19:43. | :19:47.
now. So it is a fantastic achievement. He has five in this | :19:48. | :19:52.
competition so he is enjoying it. Norwich's defeat by Shrewsbtry was | :19:53. | :19:56.
one of the shocks of the rotnds so far. Neal Adams had made 11 changes | :19:57. | :20:00.
but the Canaries failed to finish in front of goal. Then a second`half | :20:01. | :20:06.
header proved decisive. Every week on Look East, | :20:07. | :20:09.
we give you a barometer reading Barometers of course measurd | :20:10. | :20:12.
atmospheric pressure and, before weather apps on smartphones, | :20:13. | :20:18.
they were very popular. The largest private collecthon | :20:19. | :20:23.
of barometers in the UK It's owned by a man from Norfolk, | :20:24. | :20:28.
and Mike Liggins has been Patrick is one of the world's | :20:29. | :20:45.
leading experts on barometers. He lives in a perfectly ordinary house | :20:46. | :20:49.
on a nice estate in Norfolk but behind the net curtains is something | :20:50. | :20:51.
quite extraordinary. 100 barometers of all shapes and | :20:52. | :21:09.
sizes. They originally belonged to his father a barometer maker and | :21:10. | :21:12.
restorer for most of his life until he died last year. The things that | :21:13. | :21:18.
went through his workshop, he would put them to one side and he would | :21:19. | :21:23.
think, I'll repair this latdr on, or it is a good example of somdthing I | :21:24. | :21:28.
haven't seen many of. And so he would put it to one side. Jtst to | :21:29. | :21:32.
give you an idea of the extdnt of the collection, the barometdrs go | :21:33. | :21:37.
all the way up the stairs, `nd then onto the landing. Most of them are | :21:38. | :21:42.
domestic but, of course, ovdr the years, barometers have been used in | :21:43. | :21:46.
all walks of life. Barometers were used on ships, down the pits to read | :21:47. | :21:52.
pressure and minds, and as ` marketing tool. I like the look of | :21:53. | :21:58.
this one. Tell me about it. This one is made by an maker who werd the | :21:59. | :22:04.
Rolls`Royce of the instrument making world of that time in the mhd`1 th | :22:05. | :22:07.
century. With smartphones, whether apps and | :22:08. | :22:18.
computer predictions, do we really need barometers these days? If you | :22:19. | :22:24.
have a barometer in your hole, when you go past it twice a day, morning | :22:25. | :22:30.
and evening, and you tap it, and you look at the reading, and thdre is | :22:31. | :22:34.
something just a little bit more special about that, you know? What | :22:35. | :22:40.
are they worth? Some of thel might fetch ?2000. The collection as a | :22:41. | :22:44.
whole might even reach six figures. We will know more when the | :22:45. | :22:51.
collection goes on sale in this on October the 3rd. | :22:52. | :22:57.
We always do the barometer reading on Thursday unless somebody forgets. | :22:58. | :22:58.
But today being Wednesday... It's not because I forget it, | :22:59. | :23:08.
sometimes we run out of timd. There's quite a lot of weather to | :23:09. | :23:13.
talk about. But a special treat for you tonight. This is our re`ding. | :23:14. | :23:21.
The weather forecast this wdek is actually fairly settled, having said | :23:22. | :23:25.
that, we had a disappointing forecast this morning. This weather | :23:26. | :23:29.
front took ages to clear, which has meant for some counties, like | :23:30. | :23:34.
Norfolk and Suffolk, it staxed cloudy with showery rain. Wd have | :23:35. | :23:39.
seen the last of its bar thd odd isolated shower, it is lookhng | :23:40. | :23:43.
largely dry. It is looking like a good end to the day but it hs a | :23:44. | :23:46.
chilly night because we are under clear skies. The temperaturds | :23:47. | :23:53.
tumbling into single figures. In towns or cities, six or sevdn, so | :23:54. | :23:58.
out in the country, it could get chilly, and feeling quite attumnal | :23:59. | :24:04.
as we get to tomorrow morning. The forecast for tomorrow is likely to | :24:05. | :24:10.
be cloudy. We might have a chilly start but there is cloud coling in | :24:11. | :24:15.
from the west. There are sole cloudy spells don't expect any sunshine. We | :24:16. | :24:19.
do get some slightly warmer air coming our way, and slightlx more | :24:20. | :24:23.
humid air with a south`westdrly wind. If you are up early, xou might | :24:24. | :24:28.
see some early brightness. Then it is cloud. Most of the region should | :24:29. | :24:35.
stay dry through the day but under the cloud, it is possible wd could | :24:36. | :24:40.
get some light rain or crystal in places. Many dry, but just the risk. | :24:41. | :24:46.
Temperature wise, they perk up. After the chilly Stott, a lhght wind | :24:47. | :24:51.
will help lift things to perhaps 18 or 19. Although it stays | :24:52. | :24:57.
predominantly cloudy for thd second half of the day, there might be some | :24:58. | :25:01.
brighter spells out fire. The pressure pattern for the rest of the | :25:02. | :25:08.
week, weather front around for Friday, but the unfortunate thing is | :25:09. | :25:13.
it will be rather cloudy and breezy. That former air still with ts on | :25:14. | :25:17.
Friday so temperatures could lift to 21 Celsius. Quite a lot of cloud, | :25:18. | :25:23.
but looking more promising on Saturday with sunshine. Temperatures | :25:24. | :25:28.
hovering around 19. More cloud on Sunday. But it is a chilly night | :25:29. | :25:33.
tonight, and then relativelx mild with double figures. | :25:34. | :25:42.
Will we get the barometer tomorrow? We will see. See you tomorrow night. | :25:43. | :25:45. |
