Hello and welcome to Look E`st. In the programme tonight: Anger as a | :00:09. | :00:13.
man convicted of three murddrs gets compensation for lost photos and a | :00:14. | :00:16.
damaged alarm clock. This prison officer says he was attacked by him | :00:17. | :00:23.
in jail. It is quite shocking. It is quite hurtful. I haven't received an | :00:24. | :00:26.
apology or any compensation. Food banks stretched to the limit as | :00:27. | :00:32.
demand for help almost triples. Coming up later: What this lan | :00:33. | :00:36.
looked like after he fell from a hotel balcony. And what he looks | :00:37. | :00:40.
like now with a new skull m`de of titanium. And the day the | :00:41. | :00:42.
suffragettes burnt this hotdl in Felixstowe down 100 years ago. Good | :00:43. | :00:58.
evening. First tonight: A triple murderer from Stevenage has been | :00:59. | :01:01.
awarded more than ?800 after some of his personal items were lost during | :01:02. | :01:04.
a prison transfer. Kevan Th`krar was convicted of gunning down three | :01:05. | :01:07.
people in Bishop's Stortford in 2007. His compensation pay out | :01:08. | :01:17.
includes damage to an alarm clock and a pair of nose hair clippers. | :01:18. | :01:20.
The Prison Officers Association say the award is an insult and | :01:21. | :01:27.
ridiculous. Neil Bradford rdports. He is serving three life sentences. | :01:28. | :01:34.
He has a history of violencd in prison. Kevan Thakrar has spent time | :01:35. | :01:42.
in several jails. He has bedn transferred to Milton Keynes Dons. | :01:43. | :01:46.
During this transfer, a number of his possessions were damaged or | :01:47. | :01:51.
lost. He was awarded compensation totalling ?815. One of his victims | :01:52. | :01:58.
says it is an insult. It is quite shocking. It is quite hurtftl. I | :01:59. | :02:03.
haven't received an apology. I haven't received compensation. I | :02:04. | :02:09.
have had to move back into with my parents to get support. The fact | :02:10. | :02:14.
that my life is in tatters `nd he is sitting there with a smile on his | :02:15. | :02:19.
face, getting this publicitx and he has ?800 of taxpayers money in his | :02:20. | :02:27.
bank. Kevan Thakrar was initially offered the compensation whdn he | :02:28. | :02:34.
moved to prison in Milton Kdynes. He refused and took the case to the | :02:35. | :02:38.
Small Claims Court. After whnning his case, the Prison Servicd were | :02:39. | :02:39.
ordered to pay him ?814. Kevan Thakrar was jailed for the | :02:40. | :03:02.
murder of three people in Bhshopston offered in 2007. `` in Bishops Court | :03:03. | :03:13.
for the. The reaction of most people in the town was one of amazdment. It | :03:14. | :03:20.
is very wrong, isn't it? He shouldn't be given that | :03:21. | :03:21.
compensation. He committed those murders. Much better things money | :03:22. | :03:27.
could go on than compensating somebody like that. No, he shouldn't | :03:28. | :03:33.
get the money. No way. Well, I don't think you should get all of it. He | :03:34. | :03:40.
should get about ?20. Kevan Thakrar is still protesting his innocence. | :03:41. | :03:45.
He claims he is the victim of a miscarriage of justice. For the | :03:46. | :03:48.
prison officers who suffered at his hands, the only injustice is this | :03:49. | :03:52.
ruling. Sally Chidzoy has been following the | :03:53. | :04:00.
case and is in our Newsroom now Sadly, there is a lot of anger over | :04:01. | :04:05.
this pay`out. What did the judge say? | :04:06. | :04:13.
I have the judgement here. The district judge was sitting `t Milton | :04:14. | :04:22.
Keynes Dons County Court and was scathing of the initial handling. He | :04:23. | :04:36.
says, it is Kevan Thakrar's property, not his liberty, with | :04:37. | :04:38.
which I have two deal. There is a lot of focus on this | :04:39. | :05:03.
compensation case today. It is not unusual for prisoners to get | :05:04. | :05:07.
compensation, is it? Certainly not and it is on the rise. It is | :05:08. | :05:12.
reported ?30 million was pahd out in one year alone. It is mostlx for | :05:13. | :05:19.
things that slips, sports injuries and property losses. The judge in | :05:20. | :05:29.
this case says it is all about the law, and not who gains from it. | :05:30. | :05:33.
Sadly, thank you. Demand for emergency food p`rcels | :05:34. | :05:36.
has almost tripled in this region in the last year. The figures come from | :05:37. | :05:40.
the Trussell Trust which now runs 40 food banks across the East. It says | :05:41. | :05:43.
it's helped more than 90,000 adults and children in the last 12 months. | :05:44. | :05:50.
The previous year, the figure was nearer 30,000. Let's go livd now to | :05:51. | :05:54.
Louise Hubball, who is at the Bedford Food Bank tonight. | :05:55. | :06:04.
From this Church hall, they fed 25 people today. We have seen them | :06:05. | :06:08.
turning up and collecting an emergency supply of food. M`ny | :06:09. | :06:13.
didn't want to be received `` didn't want to be filmed receiving help. | :06:14. | :06:17.
The charity that runs this food bank says demand is rising. | :06:18. | :06:24.
Is the first time Jim has rdsorted to a food bank. After he became | :06:25. | :06:28.
ill, he has struggled to pax for everything after his governlent | :06:29. | :06:32.
benefits. You have to be given a voucher to use a food bank. Jim was | :06:33. | :06:38.
sent by his doctor. You strtggle paying your household bills aren't | :06:39. | :06:43.
buying food. I would rather have electric and water in the house I | :06:44. | :06:47.
spend most of my money on that. It leaves me nothing with which to buy | :06:48. | :06:55.
food. Sometimes, I borrow money to get milk and bread. You said you | :06:56. | :07:02.
have always worked. Did you expect to be in this position? Nevdr ever. | :07:03. | :07:10.
I have been trying to get worse for nearly two years. It is verx hard. | :07:11. | :07:16.
Very, very hard. Clients get an emergency supply of donated food to | :07:17. | :07:20.
last three days. People comd here for many reasons. Redundancx or an | :07:21. | :07:25.
unexpected bill. Demand has almost tripled in the region in thd last | :07:26. | :07:32.
year. The various factors are fuelling demand, but increasingly, | :07:33. | :07:36.
the welfare reforms the effdct of those, and particularly people not | :07:37. | :07:43.
been sanctioned. That is whdn payments are stopped, if yot don't | :07:44. | :07:47.
attend interviews or training. The government says there was no | :07:48. | :07:51.
evidence of a link between welfare reforms and the use of food banks. | :07:52. | :07:57.
This is the most expensive htem on our list, which was frozen | :07:58. | :08:00.
vegetables, which I think is horrifying. Cheapest items `re | :08:01. | :08:05.
crisps and chips. This family have spent ?1 a day each on this food to | :08:06. | :08:12.
last five days. It is a budgeting challenge and has been tough. We | :08:13. | :08:16.
love being hospitable. We love inviting people to have food with | :08:17. | :08:24.
others or shirty with as. When you have so little, you stop dohng that. | :08:25. | :08:30.
You have got to think about getting through the week. We didn't have | :08:31. | :08:37.
that choice. It is a tempor`ry hardship for this family for a good | :08:38. | :08:42.
cause. But donated food support thousands of people in need in our | :08:43. | :08:50.
region. Just as one food bank supports 500 people every month | :08:51. | :08:54.
helping them reach a cash shortage, that story is being repeated all the | :08:55. | :08:59.
way across the East. Thank you. | :09:00. | :09:02.
For years, Corby was the biggest town in Britain without a r`ilway | :09:03. | :09:05.
station. But that all changdd five years ago today. Now the town has | :09:06. | :09:12.
connections through to London and the North, passenger numbers have | :09:13. | :09:14.
doubled and the station is now considered a key part of thd town's | :09:15. | :09:17.
regeneration. Mike Cartwright reports. | :09:18. | :09:32.
Milestone for the connection here. More than 100,000 passengers | :09:33. | :09:37.
travelled from this station last year. The numbers are still rising. | :09:38. | :09:42.
The main impact as it makes it easy for people coming to the town who | :09:43. | :09:47.
would not have come here before The volume of people using the train | :09:48. | :09:50.
station is increasing month on month. Passenger numbers ard rising | :09:51. | :09:55.
every day. We changed the thcket office hours here. We are now open | :09:56. | :10:01.
until 7:30pm. Tickets numbers have almost doubled since last ydar. All | :10:02. | :10:06.
we's old station was closed in the 1960s. `` Corby's old station was | :10:07. | :10:20.
closed in the 1960s. Lots of businesses here are part of European | :10:21. | :10:26.
or even global groups. They say it makes a difference to them that | :10:27. | :10:29.
people can travel hear directly from London. There is more work to do, | :10:30. | :10:36.
though. There is still only one service one hour. There is only one | :10:37. | :10:40.
service going up today. I w`nt to improve that. There are 16 direct | :10:41. | :10:45.
trains from here to London dvery day. They say that by 2017, there | :10:46. | :10:52.
will be two trains to the c`pital every hour to a station serving a | :10:53. | :11:00.
town of 65,000. A developer is building more than 5000 new homes | :11:01. | :11:06.
here. The new station is vital for growth, he says. | :11:07. | :11:14.
The station was critical. It gives people confidence. We have had a | :11:15. | :11:26.
hard time over the last fivd years. From here to London in just over an | :11:27. | :11:31.
hour. Station helping this town forge a new future. | :11:32. | :11:35.
Cambridge Airport's won a bhg new contract to fly daily services to | :11:36. | :11:42.
Dublin and Amsterdam. It's part of a plan to build on its intern`tional | :11:43. | :11:45.
status. But only last month, flights to other European cities were halted | :11:46. | :11:48.
because of a lack of demand. That won't be an issue, says the new | :11:49. | :11:58.
airline. It is a different schedule, different type of aircraft. | :11:59. | :12:06.
Passengers can fly to many different destinations. | :12:07. | :12:11.
Meanwhile, road connections in the East were given a boost this morning | :12:12. | :12:14.
with the A11 Elvedon bypass in Suffolk finally opened. It's only | :12:15. | :12:36.
one way in each direction and there is a speed limit of 40 miles an | :12:37. | :12:40.
hour. It's a major milestond in the A11 dualling project. The ftll | :12:41. | :12:42.
nine`mile section from Thetford to Barton Mills is still on tr`ck for | :12:43. | :12:45.
completion in September. A statue worth millions of pounds is | :12:46. | :12:47.
being sold by contract with the Irish company | :12:48. | :12:48.
Cityjet to fly daily services to Dublin and Amsterdam It's part of | :12:49. | :12:50.
council. The so`called Sekhdmka statue is from Ancient Egypt and was | :12:51. | :12:53.
gifted to the council in thd 18 0s by Lord Northampton. It could be | :12:54. | :12:55.
worth around ?7 million. into the relegation zone for the | :12:56. | :13:06.
first time, but Northampton climb clear in League Two. And thd | :13:07. | :13:09.
campaign to give women the vote House of a jet burned this hotel to | :13:10. | :13:17.

surgeons have been doing hip replacement operations using metal. | :13:30. | :13:34.
But using metal in people's heads is a much more recent developmdnt. Lee | :13:35. | :13:37.
Charie from Stansted Abbots near Harlow fell off a two`story balcony | :13:38. | :13:41.
in Thailand in 2012. He lost a quarter of the bone in his head But | :13:42. | :13:44.
using titanium, doctors at Addenbrooke's have managed to | :13:45. | :13:46.
transform his appearance. Lee was told he could be paralysed | :13:47. | :13:49.
for the rest of us live. He spent two weeks in intensive care in | :13:50. | :13:53.
Thailand and this was the rdsult. On a diving holiday with friends he | :13:54. | :13:59.
fell headfirst 25 beat off ` balcony. When it first happdned I | :14:00. | :14:06.
was in a bad way. I lost wedks of knowing anything. My dad was in | :14:07. | :14:11.
hospital. I went to the toilet and looked in the mirror and saw, and | :14:12. | :14:19.
said what be done to my head. It has been a slow recovery fully, but few | :14:20. | :14:23.
years on he is back running his own business again maintaining | :14:24. | :14:27.
instrumentals. He says he owes it all to the hospital. After ` month | :14:28. | :14:32.
recovering in Thailand he brought his school home in a box. Doctors in | :14:33. | :14:40.
Cambridge rebuilt it and usdd a 3D printer to make a mould of his head. | :14:41. | :14:46.
Then a titanium plate was fhtted to his skill using screws. The same | :14:47. | :14:51.
material used to build spacd shuttles. It is a stronger | :14:52. | :14:57.
material, being a metal. It is an inert metal. It is easily shaped. It | :14:58. | :15:03.
stays in shape and the infection rate lower than with other | :15:04. | :15:10.
materials. Lee went for a checkup and his skill is taking a bht of | :15:11. | :15:15.
getting used to. He doesn't have to explain his story to everyone in the | :15:16. | :15:19.
pub and no longer has two where a heavy to hide his head. I couldn't | :15:20. | :15:38.
believe it. `` where a hoodhe. I'm still here and happy to be here Lee | :15:39. | :15:45.
almost died on holiday. He hs most grateful he is still alive but also | :15:46. | :15:50.
appreciates the titanium cr`nium which has given him back his | :15:51. | :15:59.
appearance. Time for the football now. @nd there | :16:00. | :16:02.
were plenty of crucial fixttres this weekend. Here's Tom. It's h`ppened. | :16:03. | :16:08.
Norwich City have finally dropped into the Premier League's rdlegation | :16:09. | :16:11.
zone. Ryan Giggs' Manchester United ran riot at Old Trafford. Rooney | :16:12. | :16:15.
first from the spot. His second came from range and Man U were soon out | :16:16. | :16:19.
of sight. ?37 million Juan Lata sealed the win with two mord goals. | :16:20. | :16:22.
It ended 4`0. Not a pretty picture for City fans. This table charts the | :16:23. | :16:26.
Canaries' league position over the last few months. As you can see they | :16:27. | :16:29.
began flirting with the drop`zone in the Autumn. Wins over West Ham and | :16:30. | :16:33.
Crystal Palace moved them up to 14th by the end of November. In January, | :16:34. | :16:37.
they were as high as 12th. Victory over Spurs salvaged what'd been a | :16:38. | :16:40.
poor February, leaving them 14th but since then, a steady declind. Five | :16:41. | :16:44.
defeats in a row leaves thel in the bottom three with two games to go. A | :16:45. | :16:51.
remarkable turnaround but Ipswich just fell short of the play`offs. | :16:52. | :16:54.
Four points back, one to go. Defeat to Burnley ended their hopes. But | :16:55. | :16:58.
after battling relegation in his first year in charge, the m`nager | :16:59. | :17:01.
wasn't too downhearted with evidence of real progress. | :17:02. | :17:09.
We came to Burnley last year having just survived the game before. We | :17:10. | :17:16.
are coming this season, thrde points winner kept us in the play`offs The | :17:17. | :17:20.
players deserve the credit for that because they're put a shift in. I'm | :17:21. | :17:24.
still frustrated because I thought we could have got into the top six. | :17:25. | :17:34.
Peterborough are hoping to join Ipswich in the Championship next | :17:35. | :17:36.
season. They're guaranteed ` play`off spot after a win at | :17:37. | :17:39.
Shrewsbury to sew up sixth place. Posh's play`off semifinal fhrst leg | :17:40. | :17:43.
is on eighth May. MK Dons whll also finish in the top half. Meanwhile, | :17:44. | :17:46.
Colchester's fans are happy. Why not? Victory means they're `ll but | :17:47. | :17:49.
safe. Given the club contintes to invest vast resources in thdir | :17:50. | :17:52.
academy whilst giving some ` crack in the first team. Reason to be | :17:53. | :17:56.
proud. Even if it got a little nervy. | :17:57. | :18:01.
Outsides and air of trepidation A point clear of the relegation zone, | :18:02. | :18:06.
two games to play. Inside some tranquillity. We are quite confident | :18:07. | :18:14.
as we are in those games. Wd feel we can get something from the game | :18:15. | :18:21.
today. We know the budget is tight, but that means the younger players | :18:22. | :18:26.
get a chance? That is important in what we are trying to do. Whth the | :18:27. | :18:31.
size of our budget we try to improve what we have in home`grown talent, | :18:32. | :18:36.
and that reflects in the te`m we are picked. Colchester invest ?0 million | :18:37. | :18:44.
a year in youth team development. In Saturday, the under 18 's wdre | :18:45. | :18:47.
presented with the winning ledals. Many of the people have dond it | :18:48. | :18:56.
here. It is exceptional. At kick`off, it was focusing on the | :18:57. | :19:02.
now. They raced into a lead, and although Brentford pulled one back, | :19:03. | :19:08.
the only panic was a new wax end. They secured their League One state | :19:09. | :19:12.
is due to a superior goal difference. It is an amazing | :19:13. | :19:21.
performance. People don't rdalise what a young side we have. @s the | :19:22. | :19:34.
years go on they will progrdss. You can see more from an exciting day at | :19:35. | :19:38.
Colchester in Late Kick Off tonight on BBC One. In League Two, joy for | :19:39. | :19:42.
both Southend and Northampton. A draw for the Blues. They know for | :19:43. | :19:45.
certain they'll be involved in the end of season play`offs. Northampton | :19:46. | :19:48.
meanwhile escaped the releg`tion zone for the first time since | :19:49. | :19:51.
September. Ivan Toney scored twice in a 3`0 win over Dagenham. They | :19:52. | :19:54.
were the 18`year` old's first goals for the club. Ian Morris also scored | :19:55. | :19:58.
a cracker. A point for the Cobblers next week guarantees their place in | :19:59. | :20:01.
the Football League for another year. That's it. For more sport | :20:02. | :20:04.
check out the website. How much do you know about the | :20:05. | :20:08.
campaign to give women the vote The campaign by the Suffragettes | :20:09. | :20:10.
included everything from ch`ining themselves to railings, to | :20:11. | :20:12.
disrupting public meetings. The most famous incident involved Emhly | :20:13. | :20:15.
Davison, who threw herself tnder the King's horse at the Derby in 19 3. | :20:16. | :20:18.
In 1914, the Suffragettes rdsorted to arson too. Among their t`rgets | :20:19. | :20:22.
was a pier in Great Yarmouth and 100 years ago today, a hotel in | :20:23. | :20:25.
Felixstowe. Gareth George h`s this report. | :20:26. | :20:28.
The Bath Hotel, once Felixstowe s finest. It stood proud on the | :20:29. | :20:33.
seafront until the suffragettes burned it down. Exactly 100 years | :20:34. | :20:38.
ago today they started the fire probably around midnight or | :20:39. | :20:44.
thereabouts. By the time thd Fire Brigade got there it was well | :20:45. | :20:49.
alight. There is a grainy photograph of the culprits, Two differhng | :20:50. | :20:58.
characters. Hilda was 37 and had a long history of suffragette | :20:59. | :21:01.
campaign. She had been in prison twice for the cause. She was a very | :21:02. | :21:06.
outgoing and common person, whereas Florence was only 22 when she came | :21:07. | :21:10.
to Felixstowe, and didn't h`ve a long involvement with the | :21:11. | :21:18.
suffragettes. The West Wing is all that remains of the hotel and today | :21:19. | :21:22.
a plaque dedicated to the two women was unveiled. They chose Bath Hotel | :21:23. | :21:31.
because it was a prominent hotel and well`known, but also becausd it was | :21:32. | :21:34.
closed season and therefore they decided they would burn it down | :21:35. | :21:40.
without a risk to life. As ` woman I think my vote is very precious and | :21:41. | :21:44.
yet I'm glad they fought for people like me. I fully support wh`t they | :21:45. | :21:48.
did here 100 years ago todax, because nobody was harmed and they | :21:49. | :21:51.
knew the hotel was empty before they carried out the action. I would not | :21:52. | :21:56.
look at is it terrorism. Thdy were pushed to the brink and had no | :21:57. | :21:59.
choice. I think because thex were so ignored by government and bx men | :22:00. | :22:03.
they got to the point where they were desperate. This was Hilda and | :22:04. | :22:09.
Florence's handiwork. Earlidr the same month they burned down the pier | :22:10. | :22:13.
at Great Yarmouth. This man runs a book shop and has just publhshed a | :22:14. | :22:18.
book about the Bath Hotel. One has to applaud the idea and thex | :22:19. | :22:25.
achieved a lot. It is a contradiction in terms to ptt a | :22:26. | :22:31.
plaque up for the suffragettes because they burned down our hotel. | :22:32. | :22:36.
It is an odd situation. Crowds gathered to jeer them at thdir trial | :22:37. | :22:43.
at Felixstowe. But it has now honoured them. | :22:44. | :22:59.
Let's get the weather. Some of us enjoyed some brightness but there | :23:00. | :23:06.
was some cloud around too. There was heavy showers around, but they're | :23:07. | :23:10.
clearing away to the west so it will be dry us tonight. Some misty cloud | :23:11. | :23:16.
around, but it won't be a particularly cold night, lows of | :23:17. | :23:22.
eight or nine degrees. And the winds are very light and from a e`sterly | :23:23. | :23:29.
direction. Tomorrow we have this front pushing from the South west, | :23:30. | :23:36.
and in between we have a light winds and any mist or fog may be slow to | :23:37. | :23:42.
clear and may linger on the coast. Elsewhere, hopefully it'll be drier | :23:43. | :23:48.
and brighter. We are likely to see some bit of rain pushing in from the | :23:49. | :23:52.
east but I think the many others it will be dry. The best of anx | :23:53. | :23:57.
brightness, temperatures up to 5 or 16 Celsius. We hold onto those lysed | :23:58. | :24:05.
easterly winds as well. Through the afternoon we do see showers but for | :24:06. | :24:09.
most of us it'll be a dry end to the day, and I think a similar day on | :24:10. | :24:14.
Wednesday. Some mist and fog lingering with a day, but it should | :24:15. | :24:19.
clear and some brightness whth the chance of a few showers. Thtrsday's | :24:20. | :24:25.
weathered the dense on some weather fronts. As it stands it seels there | :24:26. | :24:31.
will be some longer spells of rain but it is something we are keeping a | :24:32. | :24:36.
close eye on. Friday should be largely dry, with the best chance of | :24:37. | :24:45.
sunshine in the west. Winds are in a northerly direction and it hs | :24:46. | :24:49.
becoming cold it during the weekend. Friday night will be four | :24:50. | :24:54.
Celsius, or lower, so perhaps a return to frost. This month, the BBC | :24:55. | :25:08.
