The MP for North Norfolk and former Health Minister Norman Lamb

:00:07.:00:09.

is warning the unprecedented strain on hospitals is making staff more

:00:10.:00:13.

Figures show a national rise in surgery blunders and more cases

:00:14.:00:19.

Norman Lamb says the figures he obtained from NHS England show

:00:20.:00:27.

patients are being failed because the NHS

:00:28.:00:29.

The figures show nationally the numbers of surgical incidents

:00:30.:00:35.

have more than doubled in three years.

:00:36.:00:38.

There were 740 incidents in 2015-2016 and one of

:00:39.:00:41.

the main areas of concern was surgeons operating

:00:42.:00:43.

on the wrong part of the body.

:00:44.:00:49.

The whole system is under impossible strain.

:00:50.:00:51.

The government simply isn't providing sufficient funding

:00:52.:00:54.

and everyone outside the government knows

:00:55.:00:56.

that this isn't sustainable and there are consequences.

:00:57.:01:00.

I think if you have people, staff, clinicians

:01:01.:01:02.

then there will be mistakes that happen.

:01:03.:01:08.

Serious incidents are anything from slips, trips and falls

:01:09.:01:11.

to suboptimal care of deteriorating patients.

:01:12.:01:15.

Our region's hospitals though seem to be bucking the national trend.

:01:16.:01:20.

Serious incidents have actually fallen in the east.

:01:21.:01:22.

Within the last year, there have been far less,

:01:23.:01:31.

The Department of Health says the national rise in

:01:32.:01:35.

serious incidents is due to better recording of such occurrences.

:01:36.:01:38.

But with the increasing pressure on our hospitals, there are

:01:39.:01:41.

fears rising demands will continue to lead to serious errors.

:01:42.:01:46.

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man

:01:47.:01:54.

Paramedics were called to the house in Bentley Avenue

:01:55.:01:59.

It's believed the man had been assaulted yesterday evening.

:02:00.:02:04.

Essex Fire Service say a man in his 50s has been left

:02:05.:02:07.

homeless after a fire at his flat in Chelmsford.

:02:08.:02:10.

It's thought it started accidentally after an electric heater got

:02:11.:02:13.

Two neighbouring flats also suffered water damage.

:02:14.:02:20.

A woman's been arrested after an illegal New Year's rave in Norfolk.

:02:21.:02:24.

Last night police dispersed crowds and seized equipment from a field

:02:25.:02:27.

There was disappointment among Royal devotees at Sandringham today hoping

:02:28.:02:36.

to see the Queen at the New Year church service, led by

:02:37.:02:39.

The Duke of Edinburgh was there but the Queen

:02:40.:02:43.

Prince Edward and the Princess Anne were there too.

:02:44.:02:47.

Royal fans old and young were understanding.

:02:48.:02:52.

It doesn't matter if she's got a cold then.

:02:53.:02:55.

If she's got a cold, it takes quite a while to get over it,

:02:56.:03:03.

You know, you're not over it in a day, are you?

:03:04.:03:10.

We need to stay indoors and keep warm so we can quite understand,

:03:11.:03:13.

The Norfolk seaside town of Sheringham has resurrected

:03:14.:03:18.

the New Year's Day dip after a 10-year break.

:03:19.:03:22.

Around 50 swimmers braved the cold North Sea temperatures,

:03:23.:03:24.

It was organised by a local lifeboat man to raise money for the service.

:03:25.:03:31.

Much more better than what I expected.

:03:32.:03:35.

Brilliant turnout, despite the weather.

:03:36.:03:37.

It was raining this morning but luckily

:03:38.:03:39.

A massive thank you to everyone turning up and donating to the RNLI.

:03:40.:03:52.

And there are more pictures on our BBC Look East Facebook page.

:03:53.:03:55.

In Rugby Union, Northampton had a narrow win away to Gloucester

:03:56.:03:58.

The home side looked set for victory but Saints nipped ahead just seven

:03:59.:04:02.

minutes before time to win by 13 points to 12.

:04:03.:04:04.

Now, let's dip into the chilly forecast, here's Aisling Creevey.

:04:05.:04:06.

Well, it was rather a damp start to the New Year

:04:07.:04:10.

But most of that rain has pushed away now and we're

:04:11.:04:14.

Now, there is still one or two showers around,

:04:15.:04:17.

generally just brushing into the coast but for most it's

:04:18.:04:20.

Temperatures falling very close to freezing.

:04:21.:04:23.

So there will be a risk of one or two icy stretches first thing

:04:24.:04:26.

in the morning and as we head through the day, rather a lot

:04:27.:04:29.

Always the risk of the few showers, mainly along the north coast.

:04:30.:04:33.

But elsewhere, it will be dry and

:04:34.:04:35.

Now, it stays rather cloudy as we head into Tuesday with

:04:36.:04:41.

But over the next couple of days, we do see more

:04:42.:04:46.

in the way of sunshine but it certainly stays very cold and very

:04:47.:04:49.

That's all from Look East for tonight.

:04:50.:04:53.

We're back at lunchtime tomorrow at 1.10.

:04:54.:04:56.

For many, New Year's Day was a shocker with all of that rain

:04:57.:05:14.

around. Tomorrow will be sunny, but it is getting colder. This is rain

:05:15.:05:18.

clearing from the south-east. These specks of white as snow mixed in

:05:19.:05:22.

with showers across parts of northern England, particularly

:05:23.:05:25.

across Scotland, low levels here. I say that they hazard in northern and

:05:26.:05:30.

eastern areas. I would not rule out slippery areas almost anywhere by

:05:31.:05:35.

the morning, by which time temperatures will be close to or

:05:36.:05:39.

below freezing in many places. A bright and sunny start, but still

:05:40.:05:43.

wintry showers, sliding down the North Sea coast. Some snow down at

:05:44.:05:45.

quite low levels

:05:46.:05:47.
