Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
to expect armed police patrolling busy areas after yesterday's | :00:00. | :00:11.
MPs return to Westminster and vow that attacks | :00:12. | :00:20.
on democracy won't divide them, or the country. | :00:21. | :00:26.
Parliament represents something, it represents freedom, | :00:27. | :00:27.
it represents democracy and it represents our defiance | :00:28. | :00:30.
of these appalling acts and our determination to carry on. | :00:31. | :00:40.
Faith groups from around our area call for unity. | :00:41. | :00:47.
I wasn't one of the sitting back and letting others do all the work. | :00:48. | :00:53.
Illuminating the past - a 3D version | :00:54. | :00:54.
of Hull's William Wilberforce to tell the story of his | :00:55. | :00:57.
And lots of sunshine on the way, join me that the very latest. -- for | :00:58. | :01:08.
the very latest. Tonight - armed officers on patrol | :01:09. | :01:11.
on the streets of East Yorkshire That is the immediate legacy | :01:12. | :01:14.
of yesterday's terror It's just one of the ways Humberside | :01:15. | :01:20.
police has told Look North it will be stepping up policing | :01:21. | :01:25.
across the force area. Four people died | :01:26. | :01:27.
in London yesterday. The attacker - named | :01:28. | :01:29.
tonight as Khalid Masood - was shot dead outside | :01:30. | :01:32.
the Houses of Parliament. Our political editor Tim Iredale | :01:33. | :01:43.
reports on events inside Westminster and how the attack has affected | :01:44. | :01:46.
the region's MPs As flags flew at half-mast, MPs from | :01:47. | :01:54.
East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire joined colleagues from across the | :01:55. | :01:57.
political divide in a minute's silence to pay tribute to the | :01:58. | :02:00.
victims of yesterday's terror attack at Westminster. Throughout the day, | :02:01. | :02:07.
MPs have been sharing stories of yesterday's events. Cleethorpes' | :02:08. | :02:10.
Martin Vickers was one of the closest to the scene of the | :02:11. | :02:14.
incident. He was outside Parliament at the time. We then heard what we | :02:15. | :02:20.
know no were three shots ring out and within seconds, my colleagues | :02:21. | :02:23.
who were ahead of me in the procession, as it were, had been | :02:24. | :02:29.
told to turn round, run, get out and we were told to get out of the | :02:30. | :02:33.
building as quickly as possible and then, of course, the whole place was | :02:34. | :02:37.
locked in. Despite the sense of shock and fear, MPs were determined | :02:38. | :02:40.
it would be business as usual in Parliament today. The Prime Minister | :02:41. | :02:46.
showed today, on her opposite number have showed today, that the best way | :02:47. | :02:49.
to defeat terrorism is to prove that we will not be moved from our values | :02:50. | :02:56.
and our place. As a former Home Secretary, the former Hull west MP | :02:57. | :02:59.
Alan Johnson knows all about the threat from terror but he described | :03:00. | :03:03.
yesterday's attack as a failure. Parliament represent something, it | :03:04. | :03:06.
represents freedom, it represents democracy and it represents our | :03:07. | :03:11.
defiance of these appalling acts and he didn't succeed, as many MPs were | :03:12. | :03:14.
pointing out this morning. He didn't succeed. He got ten yards into the | :03:15. | :03:23.
gate, with an appalling Trail of devastation and death and terror | :03:24. | :03:26.
behind him, but he didn't succeed in his objectives. Once again, the | :03:27. | :03:32.
questions will turn to just how safe are MPs and their staff both here at | :03:33. | :03:34.
Westminster and their constituencies. Well I think we all | :03:35. | :03:39.
have to be vigilant, we all have to make sure that if there is something | :03:40. | :03:43.
we are suspicious about or if there are actions that perhaps someone we | :03:44. | :03:45.
know is taking and we are worried about it, we report them. It is | :03:46. | :03:49.
incumbent upon all of us to work with the police and the security | :03:50. | :03:54.
services whenever possible. The overall mood here today has been one | :03:55. | :03:58.
of defiance. Security is still very tight but most MPs I have spoken to | :03:59. | :04:03.
so they won't let the actions of any individual change the way they work. | :04:04. | :04:06.
Among the MPs and Parliamentary staff at Westminster | :04:07. | :04:08.
was a delegation from Beverley Town Council. | :04:09. | :04:12.
They were in Parliament for an awards ceremony | :04:13. | :04:14.
The town clerk, Helen Watson, was eyewitness to the security | :04:15. | :04:19.
We went to the event and as the event concluded, the incidents | :04:20. | :04:28.
outside were taking place, so we were taken | :04:29. | :04:34.
Security forces were there, or the emergency services | :04:35. | :04:38.
were around, there were members of staff from Westminster as well | :04:39. | :04:41.
who were very efficient, very effective and they made sure | :04:42. | :04:43.
everybody was looked after and I think the mayor | :04:44. | :04:45.
and I would like to say thanks to them for making sure | :04:46. | :04:49.
everybody was looked after, because there was a real spectrum | :04:50. | :04:53.
Then we were allowed to leave, at about quarter to eight last | :04:54. | :04:59.
night, we left to come back for our homeward journey. | :05:00. | :05:03.
Our thoughts really just go out to the victims and all the families, | :05:04. | :05:08.
for the tragic loss of life and no words can really express | :05:09. | :05:12.
how any of those people must be feeling today. | :05:13. | :05:27.
However Watson speaking about her experience in Parliament during the | :05:28. | :05:33.
terror attack. Here today, the message by police in Lincolnshire | :05:34. | :05:36.
and Yorkshire has been one of reassurance and of the role that our | :05:37. | :05:41.
communities have to back the lead in coming together to support each | :05:42. | :05:45.
other. Across the region, special freight services have been held. | :05:46. | :05:48.
Katie Austin is outside one of the main police stations in Hull at the | :05:49. | :05:53.
moment. What has been the reaction from the police and the public to | :05:54. | :05:56.
the terror attack? Well, Peter, even though the threat | :05:57. | :06:01.
level was already thought to be severe, what happened in London | :06:02. | :06:05.
yesterday has shocked people up and down the country, across the region | :06:06. | :06:08.
and that in the police, who lost the college. There isn't information to | :06:09. | :06:12.
suggest there is immediate threat of a terror attack in East Yorkshire | :06:13. | :06:16.
Lincolnshire, but Humberside's Assistant Chief Constable told us | :06:17. | :06:19.
today his forces responding to the safety concerns that yesterday's | :06:20. | :06:20.
events raised. Armed officers in the | :06:21. | :06:22.
centre of Hull today. The city's main streets | :06:23. | :06:24.
were busy as ever. Humberside police says | :06:25. | :06:26.
you'll be seeing more It is more about using the resources | :06:27. | :06:36.
we have in the right place at the right time, but that will include | :06:37. | :06:38.
seeing armed officers on patrol. Shoppers I spoke to said increasing | :06:39. | :06:38.
police presence is reassuring. I think it's the right thing, | :06:39. | :06:46.
because it is showing them they can't win. But if you stop living | :06:47. | :06:49.
your lives, then you are letting the terrorists win and we can't do that. | :06:50. | :06:54.
Always a good idea to have a police presence, definitely. It's a shame | :06:55. | :06:57.
it has to come to something like this before you see more police on | :06:58. | :06:58.
the beat. The unit which controls armed | :06:59. | :06:59.
police in Lincolnshire The county's police force | :07:00. | :07:01.
hasn't said it'll be increasing its presence | :07:02. | :07:04.
on the streets. The Linciolnshire Police | :07:05. | :07:05.
and Crime Commissioner says his force is already | :07:06. | :07:09.
doing all it can. We've got plans in place, we work | :07:10. | :07:17.
with regional and national colleagues to make sure we protect | :07:18. | :07:18.
the public as much as possible. Amid the talk of security, | :07:19. | :07:19.
there was time for reflection. At Holy Trinity church | :07:20. | :07:22.
in Hull, a special service and a call for the community | :07:23. | :07:25.
to support each other. Particularly today, when praying for | :07:26. | :07:36.
our nation, our city, for a very troubled world. Rain for unity, | :07:37. | :07:40.
really, in the light of what was an assault on all of our freedoms, I | :07:41. | :07:46.
think we'd agree and especially remembering those who died, their | :07:47. | :07:49.
family, their friends and all those affected by it. | :07:50. | :07:50.
Worshippers at Scunthorpe central mosque also remembered the victims | :07:51. | :07:53.
We are horrified and they are very shocked at what happened yesterday | :07:54. | :08:03.
in London. We as a Muslim community here in Scunthorpe and North | :08:04. | :08:08.
Lincolnshire, we would like to condemn what happened and we would | :08:09. | :08:11.
like to share our thoughts and prayers with the people who lost | :08:12. | :08:12.
their lives. And Ammaddiyah Muslims in Scunthorpe | :08:13. | :08:13.
handed flowers to Humberside police. A mark of respect for | :08:14. | :08:16.
their fallen colleague. So a gesture of solidarity there to | :08:17. | :08:28.
the police, who of course lost a colleague yesterday. So really, the | :08:29. | :08:31.
reaction across our area has been twofold. There has been sadness from | :08:32. | :08:35.
everyone I spoke to at the human cost of yesterday's tragic terror | :08:36. | :08:39.
attacks, but repeated assurances from those whose job it is to keep | :08:40. | :08:43.
the public say that they are doing everything they can to protect us. | :08:44. | :08:46.
And also the overriding message is people should stay alert but stay | :08:47. | :08:49.
calm and support each other wherever possible. Katie, thank you very much | :08:50. | :08:53.
indeed. We saw him there briefly | :08:54. | :08:54.
in Katy's report. This afternoon, I met Assistant | :08:55. | :08:56.
Chief Constable Andy McDyer Assistant Chief Constable, | :08:57. | :08:58.
a different force, but still one What is your reaction to the death | :08:59. | :09:01.
of PC Keith Palmer yesterday? Event such as yesterday | :09:02. | :09:08.
are terrible. I'd like to pay tribute to PC | :09:09. | :09:16.
Keith Palmer and to give our sympathies to his family | :09:17. | :09:19.
and to the families of all those Why have you decided to increase | :09:20. | :09:22.
police presence in this area? After incidents such as this, | :09:23. | :09:26.
we review all of our clients, After incidents such as this, | :09:27. | :09:31.
we review all of our plans, so we look at the plans, | :09:32. | :09:34.
for example, in relation to City of Culture events and we look | :09:35. | :09:36.
at what more we can put We will look at where we deploy our | :09:37. | :09:39.
offices across the force so that we ensure we give maximum | :09:40. | :09:43.
reassurance to the public. What types of places | :09:44. | :09:50.
were talking about? Places such as the city centre | :09:51. | :09:52.
in Hull, the centre of Grimsby, Beverley and anywhere else weather | :09:53. | :09:55.
might be a large number Beverley and anywhere else | :09:56. | :10:01.
where there might be a large Will you be using | :10:02. | :10:03.
more armed officers? We will be deploying our armed | :10:04. | :10:06.
officers in those spaces, to ensure we are giving reassurance | :10:07. | :10:08.
to the public. It's not about using more, | :10:09. | :10:11.
it is about putting the right resource in the right place | :10:12. | :10:13.
at the right time. Have any of your office has been | :10:14. | :10:27.
asked to go to London to help out? The region hasn't been asked to | :10:28. | :10:29.
provide any further resources at this point in time to the | :10:30. | :10:31.
Metropolitan Police. There is no information whatsoever | :10:32. | :10:32.
that tells us the Humberside area So why increase what | :10:33. | :10:38.
you announced today? And just briefly, what is your | :10:39. | :10:46.
message to people at home? You heard their the assistant Chief | :10:47. | :11:04.
Constable speaking, asking us to be alert but not alarmed. Are you that | :11:05. | :11:12.
tonight? Do you feel reassured by the police presence? What, if | :11:13. | :11:14.
anything, can communities do to help? Your response to what has | :11:15. | :11:20.
happened and you have heard the stories from our part of the world | :11:21. | :11:24.
and reaction to it. If you want to comment, we will have some before we | :11:25. | :11:26.
finish at 7pm. Thank you for watching. Still ahead | :11:27. | :11:51.
on the programme. When it came to politics, I was never a party man, I | :11:52. | :11:52.
liked to be independent. the new virtual William Wilberforce | :11:53. | :11:55.
telling the story of his Keep the photographs and pictures | :11:56. | :12:15.
coming in. Fozzie Bear took this one off Cottingham, thank you for that. | :12:16. | :12:18.
Another one tomorrow at about the same time. The rumours are it is | :12:19. | :12:22.
going to be nice at the weekend. We can cut out the middleman | :12:23. | :12:25.
altogether, I hope you won't take credit for it. | :12:26. | :12:30.
I will go to the golf course now, if you weren't. It will only be a few | :12:31. | :12:34.
hours, won't it? It looks very nice, something to look forward to, the | :12:35. | :12:37.
clocks go forward on Sunday morning, it is Mother's Day as well, so some | :12:38. | :12:42.
lovely weather to come. Here is the head by the tomorrow, dry and sunny | :12:43. | :12:45.
periods but there will be patchy cloud across parts of Lincolnshire | :12:46. | :12:48.
for example for a time and then then this is the weekend, dry, lots of | :12:49. | :12:52.
warm sunshine but it will be quite chilly at night. High pressure | :12:53. | :12:57.
dominating the weather for tomorrow and into the weekend, more cloud, | :12:58. | :13:02.
though, early next week. You can see on the satellite picture, a lot of | :13:03. | :13:06.
dry air has been spinning in from the North Sea, so it is a lovely | :13:07. | :13:09.
enter the day, it has been very sunny deceptiveness and I think this | :13:10. | :13:12.
evening and overnight, it looks largely clear across East Yorkshire | :13:13. | :13:16.
and parts of Lincolnshire. It may well be in the south that you pick | :13:17. | :13:20.
up a little bit of cloud, South Lincolnshire into north-west, and | :13:21. | :13:26.
Stamford Bridge area could have a ground frost, the sun rising at 5:55 | :13:27. | :13:33.
a.m., the next high water time in Hull, 3:25 a.m.. So beautiful day | :13:34. | :13:39.
for East Yorkshire and northern parts of Lincolnshire, we will just, | :13:40. | :13:44.
as we say, be clear and sunny. There might be a build-up of cloud through | :13:45. | :13:48.
the morning for a time but even that clears away and it leaves Friday | :13:49. | :13:52.
afternoon everywhere largely dry and sunny. The wind will have eased as | :13:53. | :13:56.
well, so I think in the sunshine, it is going to feel very pleasant. | :13:57. | :14:01.
Along the coast, temperatures reflecting the still chilly North | :14:02. | :14:05.
Sea but inland, 11 or 12, something like that. 11 Celsius is 52 | :14:06. | :14:10.
Fahrenheit. Stunning day on Saturday, dry and sunny and becoming | :14:11. | :14:15.
warm after frosty starting places. A bit more cloud on Sunday but it | :14:16. | :14:18.
remains bright. There will be further sunny spells, much more | :14:19. | :14:24.
cloud on Monday. Lovely weather for tomorrow morning and the meeting of | :14:25. | :14:28.
the clubhouse, enjoy. Let's have some more news from around East | :14:29. | :14:29.
Yorkshire Lincolnshire. Natwest is closing | :14:30. | :14:32.
dozens more branches In this area, branches in Bourne, | :14:33. | :14:33.
Sleaford, Horncastle and on Newark Road in Lincoln | :14:34. | :14:36.
will shut in September. Scunthorpe's MP Nic Dakin says | :14:37. | :14:40.
putting his local hospital trust into financial special measures | :14:41. | :14:45.
is "a real blow". The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole | :14:46. | :14:46.
trust is ?30 million in debt. Last week, it announced it had lost | :14:47. | :14:49.
some patient records. Health officials say they're trying | :14:50. | :14:54.
to restore some medical services It s after the loss of the town's GP | :14:55. | :14:57.
surgery last November. A petition has been launched asking | :14:58. | :15:08.
the Government to consider donating the money needed to complete | :15:09. | :15:11.
the International Bomber Command Campaigners say that they should | :15:12. | :15:13.
receive the funding, after a similar grant was awarded | :15:14. | :15:19.
to build a memorial for the Normandy The cycling team run by Sir Bradley | :15:20. | :15:27.

from next month's tore the Yorkshire. The Olympic champion, who | :15:29. | :15:33.
has since retired, founded the team to develop young British talent. | :15:34. | :15:40.
Last year, he retired from the race in the first stage because of bad | :15:41. | :15:43.
weather. Organisers say the event was oversubscribed and someone had | :15:44. | :15:49.
to miss out. Well, it is Thursday, that means it is time for our weekly | :15:50. | :15:53.

was a place of culture, but hear me out. | :16:38. | :16:42.
All I'm saying is that if you come down here from Wednesday the 29th, | :16:43. | :16:48.
you'll definitely notice that there's something fishy going on. | :16:49. | :16:50.
I said I don't just mean the big shark. | :16:51. | :16:59.
BBC Radio Humberside want you to send in your poems | :17:00. | :17:06.

Hull's monument to Wilberforce will also be illuminated tonight. | :17:56. | :17:57.
As one of Hull's most famous sons, there are statues | :17:58. | :18:09.
of him around the city, but never something different. | :18:10. | :18:12.
For the rest of this year, people in Hull will be able to meet | :18:13. | :18:15.
a more modern and more talkative version of the great man. | :18:16. | :18:18.
210 years after he helped abolish the British slave trade, | :18:19. | :18:25.
his 3-D likenesses greeting visitors both at the train station | :18:26. | :18:28.
and the Wilberforce Museum, but getting his appearance right has | :18:29. | :18:30.
Coming up with a believable figure has been our issue, really. | :18:31. | :18:35.
The portraits aren't as good, aren't as accurate as photographs, | :18:36. | :18:37.
so there was lots of conflicting information about what he | :18:38. | :18:40.
Even though he is computer-generated, an actor | :18:41. | :18:48.
was used to create his voice and movement. | :18:49. | :18:50.
So what's it like playing such a great historical figure? | :18:51. | :18:58.
It didn't really sink in until I started doing | :18:59. | :19:02.
the research and finding out how much of an influential figure | :19:03. | :19:04.
who was with the abolishment of slavery, so it was really kind | :19:05. | :19:07.
of, it became such a huge privilege to play him. | :19:08. | :19:10.
Of the slave trade as Wilberforce knew it has gone but some slavery | :19:11. | :19:13.
This is unfinished business and this is a way of raising public awareness | :19:14. | :19:18.
There are around 13,000 victims of modern-day slavery in the UK | :19:19. | :19:25.
and so as the Wilberforce monument is illuminated tonight, | :19:26. | :19:30.
the great man's fight for freedom goes on. | :19:31. | :19:42.
The 210th anniversary of the slave act and if you want to see William | :19:43. | :19:49.
Wilberforce monument, it will be lit up later this evening. | :19:50. | :19:50.
Let's get a recap of the national and regional headlines | :19:51. | :19:54.
The Westminster attacker is named as British-born Khalid | :19:55. | :19:59.
Masood, who was known to the intelligence services. | :20:00. | :20:02.
Humberside Police tells residents to expect armed police | :20:03. | :20:06.
patrolling busy areas after yesterday's terror attack. | :20:07. | :20:14.
It is more about using the resources we have in the right place and the | :20:15. | :20:19.
right time, but that will include seeing armed officers at on patrol. | :20:20. | :20:23.
That is the assistant Chief Constable and a dire talking to us | :20:24. | :20:29.
on the programme tonight. Let go back to Westminster, Tim Iredale is | :20:30. | :20:33.
there. How would you sum up the mood at Westminster today? Well, I think | :20:34. | :20:39.
it has been defined. Many of our MPs would have come to work here today | :20:40. | :20:44.
feeling shocked and no dead very saddened by what happened yesterday, | :20:45. | :20:48.
but they were determined to get on with their jobs. It was very | :20:49. | :20:52.
interesting listening to the debate in the Commons today, hearing from | :20:53. | :20:56.
some veteran MPs. Edward Leigh, the Gainsborough MP, talked about | :20:57. | :21:00.
Churchill, Attlee and what happened during the war. Parliament has a | :21:01. | :21:04.
long, proud history of seeing off its enemies, whether they are from a | :21:05. | :21:09.
foreign invading force or the modern-day curse of a terror attack | :21:10. | :21:12.
and I think it has been that Dunkirk spirit that has been the order of | :21:13. | :21:16.
the day today. And you think that this week's events will lead to | :21:17. | :21:21.
tighter security for both MPs at Westminster at their workplace and | :21:22. | :21:23.
also back here in the constituencies. What you have got to | :21:24. | :21:30.
remember, as Big Ben strike seven o'clock behind me, is that this is | :21:31. | :21:33.
already one of the most heavily fortified buildings in the country. | :21:34. | :21:38.
As long as I have been covering politics it, there has been a heavy | :21:39. | :21:41.
police presence night and day and many of those officers are armed. | :21:42. | :21:45.
When it comes to constituencies, there is already a big debate about | :21:46. | :21:49.
how safe are MPs following the tragic murder of Jo Cox last year. I | :21:50. | :21:55.
think many MPs will be reluctant to create any more division between | :21:56. | :21:57.
them and the people they represent, even if it means putting them at | :21:58. | :22:02.
risk. Right on cue, Big Ben started, it is 7pm. We were talking about the | :22:03. | :22:09.
police presence and increasing the police presence in our part of the | :22:10. | :22:15.
world and I was talking there at the police station earlier to the | :22:16. | :22:18.
assistant Chief Constable. Your response on the subject and keep | :22:19. | :22:21.
them coming in, we will have some more tomorrow night, everybody is | :22:22. | :22:26.
talking about this story. Mark says, good, I'd have thought we should be | :22:27. | :22:29.
having cover anyway, especially with this being the City of Culture, a | :22:30. | :22:35.
reference to the police being armed. The Beano says Lincoln is a prime | :22:36. | :22:39.
target now that the world knows where the drones are flown from, a | :22:40. | :22:44.
reference to RAF Waddington. This one is anonymous. I think it is all | :22:45. | :22:49.
for her something like this has to happen before an increase in police | :22:50. | :22:55.
presence is issued. It makes you feel much safer and like my children | :22:56. | :23:00.
are also safe. Plus the police officers out are always friendly. | :23:01. | :23:06.
And John is in Lincoln. Do we want the Stasi type society? I think not. | :23:07. | :23:12.
Therefore, these individual acts by deranged fanatics may be a price | :23:13. | :23:16.
that we unfortunately have to pay for the freedoms we enjoy. Keep | :23:17. | :23:20.
those messages of course coming in on the subject of policing and how | :23:21. | :23:25.
we deal with the threat of terrorism. There we are, very busy | :23:26. | :23:31.
night, thank you for watching. More on our stories tonight in the late | :23:32. | :23:36.
look North at 10:30pm. Have a nice evening. If you can join me later, | :23:37. | :23:41.
that would be good, if not, tomorrow at half past six. Good night. | :23:42. | :23:45. |
