The headlines from BBC Look North this Tuesday night. | :00:15. | :00:17.
Low morale and no confidence in management - the damning staff | :00:18. | :00:20.
survey showing why the head of Humberside Police | :00:21. | :00:22.
Our members want to do the best job they can and when they're not able | :00:23. | :00:30.
to do that it causes problems. Anger and upset - | :00:31. | :00:32.
as dozens of workers turn up to find their factory's closed down | :00:33. | :00:43.
and they won't be paid. And our seas and beaches | :00:44. | :00:46.
filling up with plastic - The weather turns a less settled | :00:47. | :00:57.
over the next few days. I shall have the full forecast shortly. | :00:58. | :01:03.
A damning survey of Humberside Police staff has revealed a complete | :01:04. | :01:06.
lack of confidence in the leadership of Justine Curran, the Chief | :01:07. | :01:08.
The details have been made public for the first time | :01:09. | :01:12.
today, by the Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter. | :01:13. | :01:20.
He's the one who told Justine Curran he thought she should leave the job. | :01:21. | :01:23.
Now one union says the new Chief Constable - | :01:24. | :01:26.
when appointed - HAS to take staff concerns seriously. | :01:27. | :01:28.
Katy Austin has been looking at the findings of the survey. | :01:29. | :01:34.
39% of staff responded to this survey | :01:35. | :01:36.
which was carried out in September last year when Justine | :01:37. | :01:38.
Of those 67% did not have confidence in chief | :01:39. | :01:42.
officers and senior managers leading Humberside Police. | :01:43. | :01:47.
84% said changes within the force are not | :01:48. | :01:49.
67% said chief officers and senior were not open or | :01:50. | :01:54.
68% did not think Humberside Police cared about its | :01:55. | :01:59.
It will be up to the new Chief Constable to try to change | :02:00. | :02:04.
Now Justine Curran has cleared her desk, the search is on | :02:05. | :02:08.
We asked some victims of crime what they want from the new | :02:09. | :02:12.
James' launderettes in Hull have been | :02:13. | :02:16.
More visible policing on the streets. | :02:17. | :02:25.
When the police are able to get on the streets we have seen some | :02:26. | :02:29.
really good results but we don't see that same | :02:30. | :02:31.
These Scunthorpe residents are trying to keep their allotment | :02:32. | :02:35.
One gardener told me what he hopes for | :02:36. | :02:40.
We haven't got enough police in this area. | :02:41. | :02:45.
The union that represents some police staff, says raising police | :02:46. | :02:51.
morale should be a priority for the new chief. | :02:52. | :02:53.
It has been very difficult, very turbulent, morale's very low. | :02:54. | :02:57.
I want to see a new Chief Constable that engages with the workforce, | :02:58. | :03:00.
so it's not just about listening, it's about listening and taking | :03:01. | :03:04.
seriously the views of the workforce. | :03:05. | :03:10.
The Police and Crime Commissioner says they'll need to regain faith | :03:11. | :03:13.
engage the workforce for the communities of this area. | :03:14. | :03:21.
It also means they need to be a good communicator because that | :03:22. | :03:33.
relationship with those communities need to be built by the leadership | :03:34. | :03:35.
Also not just the officers on the streets. | :03:36. | :03:38.
Staff morale is just one challenge Humberside's new police | :03:39. | :03:40.
Shift patterns introduced by Justine Curran in 2015 and went | :03:41. | :03:44.
Inspectors gave the force and where inadequate | :03:45. | :03:47.
year later concluded improvement was still needed. | :03:48. | :03:50.
Inspectors are due to release another report next week. | :03:51. | :03:57.
Put this against the background of Government funding cuts and large | :03:58. | :04:00.
staffing cuts and rising crime and it seems Humberside's new Chief | :04:01. | :04:03.
Constable will have quite a job to do. | :04:04. | :04:15.
So how do you recruit a new Chief Constable? | :04:16. | :04:21.
Well, Keith Hunter is starting today. | :04:22. | :04:23.
He's writing to all police officers in the UK who might fit | :04:24. | :04:25.
the job description, telling them there's a vacancy. | :04:26. | :04:27.
existing Chief Constables, their deputies and assistants. | :04:28. | :04:30.
round police magazines, job advert websites, | :04:31. | :04:33.
advertised abroad for a new Chief Constable. | :04:34. | :04:37.
As for how much the new chief will earn - well, that's | :04:38. | :04:41.
-- Humberside. a year for the Humberisde force. | :04:42. | :04:52.
Around 70 people have lost their jobs at a medical | :04:53. | :04:54.
These were the scenes outside Sutton Manufacturing Solutions, | :04:55. | :05:07.
as staff learned the company had gone into administration - | :05:08. | :05:10.
and that they wouldn't be paid for work they've done this month. | :05:11. | :05:13.
I'm joined now by our reporter Jill Archbold. | :05:14. | :05:15.
You've been speaking to staff today -- how much of a shock was this? | :05:16. | :05:21.
It was certainly a shock for staff who told me this afternoon | :05:22. | :05:24.
that the companies order book had been full - but there had | :05:25. | :05:27.
been warning signs - some staff had been made redundant | :05:28. | :05:29.
at the end of last year and more recently some had been told | :05:30. | :05:32.
Today a meeting was called - staff were summoned to the factory | :05:33. | :05:36.
by a text message - and when they arrived they were told | :05:37. | :05:39.
the company had gone into administration and their jobs | :05:40. | :05:41.
Staff say they were disappointed that none of the companies directors | :05:42. | :05:45.
Staff say they were disappointed that none of the companies directors | :05:46. | :05:48.
I worked for this company for 15 years. | :05:49. | :05:50.
And since his people have took over, the last two years, they | :05:51. | :05:53.
I was due my money at the end of January and | :05:54. | :06:00.
never received a penny of my redundancy off them. | :06:01. | :06:02.
I've had a hunch that it was going under and so came here | :06:03. | :06:12.
Travelled all the way from Worcestershire. | :06:13. | :06:14.
I'm 62 now so I've still got to find another job. | :06:15. | :06:17.
Adminstrators say they've been trying to find a buyer | :06:18. | :06:21.
for the company which make dental supplies - but these efforts | :06:22. | :06:23.
The staff have been told they won't receive a pay check this month - | :06:24. | :06:31.
and have been given information today about how they apply | :06:32. | :06:36.
The owners, who took charge in 2012, are from Croatia - | :06:37. | :06:40.
this afternoon they were not answering the only working phone | :06:41. | :06:43.
We will let you know of any developments on that story. | :06:44. | :06:52.
Inspectors have returned to East Midlands Ambulance Service | :06:53. | :06:54.
today, following a critical report last year. | :06:55. | :06:55.
The Care Quality Commission had criticised a shortage of staff | :06:56. | :06:58.
and vehicles and said the trust needed to reduce delays | :06:59. | :07:00.
EMAS bosses say that improvements have been made | :07:01. | :07:03.
Police have finished confiscating thousands of weapons | :07:04. | :07:10.
Officers were called to Skydock at Faldingworth near Market Rasen | :07:11. | :07:16.
last week after the Home Office withdrew its licence. | :07:17. | :07:18.
More needs to be done to reduce the amount of plastic being found | :07:19. | :07:23.
That's according to scientists, who say the problem of marine | :07:24. | :07:27.
litter is more widespread than once thought. | :07:28. | :07:29.
It's believed some of the first plastics ever made are | :07:30. | :07:32.
still floating around and harming sea life. | :07:33. | :07:33.
Here's our Environment Correspondent, Paul Murphy. | :07:34. | :07:42.
A half-term clean-up on the shore at Flamborough courtesy | :07:43. | :07:44.
Hidden in the stones they're finding dozens of pieces of plastic waste - | :07:45. | :07:54.
and these young volunteers know all too well why this | :07:55. | :07:57.
Animals can pick it up and they can eat it. | :07:58. | :08:05.
And the chemicals can upset their stomach when it gets inside. | :08:06. | :08:08.
In summer there's a bunch of birds go | :08:09. | :08:09.
up on the cliffs and plastic and rubbish on the beach | :08:10. | :08:12.
Earlier this month we reported on the discovery of nearly a mile | :08:13. | :08:20.
of plastic waste at the mouth of the Humber at Spurn. | :08:21. | :08:25.
And this is only the plastic we can see. | :08:26. | :08:29.
that these break down in the sea, they get | :08:30. | :08:46.
smaller and smaller, they get digested by birds and by fish. | :08:47. | :08:48.
They pick up so much plastic rubbish here at Flamborough | :08:49. | :08:54.
they even turn into wall art to highlight the problem. | :08:55. | :08:56.
The scale of the amount of rubbish that | :08:57. | :08:58.
is out in our seas is much greater than we maybe originally thought. | :08:59. | :09:01.
It really is an issue that we really need to be able to battle now. | :09:02. | :09:05.
Scientists believe the 5p charge on plastic shopping bags has | :09:06. | :09:09.
One thing that would be a good idea is to bring | :09:10. | :09:17.
Getting people to learn how to recycle. | :09:18. | :09:29.
There are many more beach cleans-ups planned for the coming months - | :09:30. | :09:32.
these help of course but the stuff that is being washed up | :09:33. | :09:48.
reperesents just a fraction of the litter in our seas. | :09:49. | :09:50.
Paul Murphy, BBC Look North Flamborough. | :09:51. | :09:55.
beaten North Ferriby by one goal to nil. -- The Imps. | :09:56. | :10:17.
And now the weather with Owain Wyn Evans. | :10:18. | :10:19.
The weather certainly is turning less settled | :10:20. | :10:21.
As for tonight, this band of rain slowly | :10:22. | :10:24.
There will be a lot of dry weather rendered. | :10:25. | :10:28.
That said temperatures will be down to six or seven | :10:29. | :10:30.
We hang on to the tail end of that weather front tomorrow | :10:31. | :10:35.
A bit more in the way of brightness by the time we get to the | :10:36. | :10:42.
Feeling noticeably colder tomorrow with highs of about eight | :10:43. | :10:47.
Again we are hanging onto that breeze. | :10:48. | :10:50.
On Thursday this area of low pressure | :10:51. | :10:51.
Outbreaks of heavy rain and gale force winds as well. | :10:52. | :11:03.
the day, particularly up towards the evening rush hour. It calms down on | :11:04. | :11:06.
the Outlook toward the end of the week and then milder again from the | :11:07. | :11:10.
wheel them. More on storm Doris now with Matt Taylor. | :11:11. | :11:12. |
