Hello and welcome to the Frhday News at Six | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello and welcome to the Frhday night Look North. In the he`dlines: | :00:00. | :00:11.
Murdered in her classroom. 20 years to the day, we remdmber | :00:12. | :00:13.
Nikki Conroy. Missing by the waterside. Another | :00:14. | :00:16.
young person disappears on ` night out. | :00:17. | :00:18.
Life begins at 40. Joanne Milne hears for the very | :00:19. | :00:27.
first time and is overwhelmdd. Could you hear those words? | :00:28. | :00:31.
Yes! And forget fly`tipping, fly`grazing | :00:32. | :00:36.
is costing councils thousands. Is the solution to eat the unw`nted | :00:37. | :00:42.
ponies? I don't see why not, we eat cattle | :00:43. | :00:47.
and pigs and sheep. It is the petting animal side will stop | :00:48. | :00:53.
In sport ` it's Dean Richards versus Dean Ryan as the Falcons ail to | :00:54. | :00:56.
secure Premiership safety in their crucial bottom of the table clash. | :00:57. | :01:00.
And it's Hall Versus Ward as the World title Holder and the | :01:01. | :01:02.
challenger square up ahead of tomorrow's big fight. | :01:03. | :01:14.
It was a crime that shocked the nation. On the morning of M`rch | :01:15. | :01:19.
28th, 1994, an armed intruddr went into a classroom at Hall Garth | :01:20. | :01:22.
School in Middlesbrough and attacked the children. One, Nikki Conroy was | :01:23. | :01:29.
killed. Even now, it's hard to believe it could ever have happened. | :01:30. | :01:33.
But Nikki has never been forgotten ` and tonight, 20 years on, friends | :01:34. | :01:36.
and classmates will be reunhted to remember the friend they lost. | :01:37. | :01:47.
Nikki was 12 when she died. She was an angel. She was a gorgeous soul | :01:48. | :02:00.
and a pleasure to be around. A life ended by an intruder at her | :02:01. | :02:03.
school. Lee was her boyfriend, he's never forgotten. She was a kind | :02:04. | :02:11.
beautiful, friendly, polite. That is how we want people to remember her. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Not just the events of that day We want to keep her memory alive. We | :02:18. | :02:25.
want to keep the person alive, the beautiful person we knew her as | :02:26. | :02:29.
And so Lee's organised a ch`rity event tonight in Middlesbrotgh to | :02:30. | :02:33.
celebrate, not mourn, Nikki. A girl killed by Stephen Wilkinson. He d | :02:34. | :02:37.
made his way into Hall Garth School into a class ` 8MR. The story retold | :02:38. | :02:50.
by one of the children. A m`n came in, he put a gun to my forehead | :02:51. | :02:58.
Anti`said the teacher, get out. Three girls were stabbed. Nhkki | :02:59. | :03:02.
fatally. There was bewilderlent Hundreds came to the funeral ` they | :03:03. | :03:06.
played Pie Jesu. Andrew Lloxd Webber later sent the Conroys the original | :03:07. | :03:10.
draft. Tragically the events at Hall Garth proved a portent of worse to | :03:11. | :03:14.
come because two years later an intruder at a school in Dunblane | :03:15. | :03:19.
killed 16 children. Much has changed since. In modern schools it is all | :03:20. | :03:29.
about security cameras like these, the gates are kept locked and the | :03:30. | :03:34.
doors kept locked. 20 years ago many schools had multiple entrance | :03:35. | :03:38.
but it is hard to imagine an intruder being able to get very far. | :03:39. | :03:44.
Anybody that has driven past schools have seen the changes. The lost | :03:45. | :03:52.
obvious is the secure fencing. That is to make sure anybody on site is | :03:53. | :03:56.
supposed to be there and schools can control who comes. Today, a new | :03:57. | :04:02.
school stands here. But the link with Nikki is unbroken, the school | :04:03. | :04:12.
library takes her name. Her father put into words what it was to lose | :04:13. | :04:20.
her. No matter what happens now it will always be a marvellous holiday | :04:21. | :04:26.
but she wasn't there. If we won the lottery, it isn't important. She | :04:27. | :04:47.
isn't there. Well, Peter is in our Middlesbrough studio now. Pdter the | :04:48. | :04:51.
legacy of what happened that day is vastly improved security in schools, | :04:52. | :04:55.
isn't it? Yes, it was easier to gain `ccess to | :04:56. | :04:59.
schools back then but inevitably after what happened at Hall Garth | :05:00. | :05:04.
and Dunblane, security has been tightened in the way it has. We know | :05:05. | :05:11.
what happened but tonight's charity event is all about celebrathng her | :05:12. | :05:15.
life, moving on from what h`ppened and her parents have asked ts to | :05:16. | :05:19.
pass on their thanks to all those who supported them over the last 20 | :05:20. | :05:21.
years. The family of a Teesside man who's | :05:22. | :05:30.
gone missing in the Lake District have made an emotional appe`l for | :05:31. | :05:34.
him to get in touch. Matthew Jordan, who's 20, and from Nunthorpd near | :05:35. | :05:36.
Middlesbrough, was visiting Bowness with friends when he was last seen | :05:37. | :05:41.
leaving a pub in the early hours of yesterday morning. The police say | :05:42. | :05:44.
his disappearance is a mystdry, and have launched a full scale search. | :05:45. | :05:47.
Mark McAlindon reports from the shore of Windermere. | :05:48. | :05:54.
Today, police divers were c`lled in to search the shoreline arotnd the | :05:55. | :06:01.
lake. It is part of a full land air and water operation to find a young | :06:02. | :06:06.
man who was a student in Middlesbrough. Matthew Jord`n's | :06:07. | :06:09.
family and friends have travelled over to help and his uncle sitting | :06:10. | :06:14.
alongside the parents may dhsappear up for him to get in touch. Matthew | :06:15. | :06:21.
is popular and kind. We are very concerned and worried for hhm. This | :06:22. | :06:26.
is so out of character for him not being in touch with anyone `nd we | :06:27. | :06:32.
want to hear from you, Matthew. Matthew, a few see and hear the | :06:33. | :06:38.
appeal, get in touch. We love you and you `` we want you home. | :06:39. | :06:44.
This is where Matthew was l`st seen yesterday morning. He came outside | :06:45. | :06:49.
to get fresh air and became separated from his friends. There | :06:50. | :06:54.
has been no trace of him. The police are baffled and can find no reason | :06:55. | :06:59.
why Matthew would simply disappear. Officers remain hopeful Matthew can | :07:00. | :07:04.
be found safe and well and `re asking people living nearby to help | :07:05. | :07:09.
them. If a local people can check houses, sheds, garages, | :07:10. | :07:11.
outbuildings, anyplace somebody could have taken shelter, if they | :07:12. | :07:17.
can check and lettuce know, even if nobody is there. Please let us know | :07:18. | :07:23.
and we can check it out. Se`rch teams have promised to conthnue | :07:24. | :07:27.
their hunt for a young man described as happy and popular. Matthdw is six | :07:28. | :07:34.
feet tall with dark brown h`ir, anyone who may have seen hil is | :07:35. | :07:41.
asked to contact the police. It's an extraordinary story. A | :07:42. | :07:43.
Gateshead woman, profoundly death all her life, has been able to hear | :07:44. | :07:47.
for the first time. Joanne Lilne was born with a rare condition which | :07:48. | :07:51.
causes both deafness and blhndness. But, after being fitted with two | :07:52. | :07:53.
cochlear implants, 39`year`old Joanne was overwhelmed with emotion | :07:54. | :07:56.
as they were switched on. Fhlmed by her mother ` here's the amazing | :07:57. | :07:59.
moment she discovered she could hear. | :08:00. | :08:07.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. It's all right. It is a | :08:08. | :08:22.
big big life changing day today Can you hear your own voice? | :08:23. | :08:30.
Yes. Good. Fantastic. Well, our health reporter Sharon | :08:31. | :08:33.
Barbour is with Joanne at hdr home in Gateshead now. Sharon. | :08:34. | :08:44.
Yes, here she is, Joanne Mill, the most watched woman across the UK | :08:45. | :08:49.
today. Very very emotional, what were you thinking when you could | :08:50. | :08:54.
hear for the first time? Words can't describe how I was | :08:55. | :09:05.
thinking. It was just overwhelming. I could start crying again just | :09:06. | :09:09.
talking about it. It will stay with me for the rest of my life. Hearing | :09:10. | :09:18.
for the first time... What has been the biggest surprises for you, the | :09:19. | :09:25.
most lovely surprises? It's only been a few days, lots of | :09:26. | :09:34.
things, the main thing is a greater awareness of what is going on around | :09:35. | :09:40.
me and ready I feel safer ottside and I can hear the traffic `nd tell | :09:41. | :09:45.
which direction the traffic is coming from. And the birds? The | :09:46. | :09:51.
music. Music! Experiencing music, H put it | :09:52. | :10:02.
on hold because it has been so daunting the last few days `nd I'm | :10:03. | :10:07.
dying to get back to it. I have only tried to listen to a few songs and | :10:08. | :10:13.
ready I can pick out the different instruments that are playing and I | :10:14. | :10:20.
recognise four or five diffdrent instruments. I imagined it was only | :10:21. | :10:26.
one sound. It is hard to explain. But the experience and the lyrics, | :10:27. | :10:36.
listening to a song and hearing it for the first time. It has been | :10:37. | :10:44.
overwhelming! I have been shaking and crying. Lovely to see you and | :10:45. | :10:51.
really fantastic. A whole ndw world has laboured up for you stop from | :10:52. | :10:58.
here, back to the studio. She nearly set me off there. Dealing whth | :10:59. | :11:07.
illegally tethered horses is costing cash`strapped councils across the | :11:08. | :11:10.
region hundreds of thousands of pounds. | :11:11. | :11:12.
This week, 18 horses were rdmoved from land on Teesside at a cost | :11:13. | :11:15.
understood to be about fiftden hundred pounds per animal. Now a | :11:16. | :11:18.
consortium called the Northdrn Equine Group, including horse | :11:19. | :11:21.
experts, councils and the police has been set up to deal with thd | :11:22. | :11:24.
problem. One suggestion is to sell the ponies to the horse meat trade. | :11:25. | :11:28.
Phil Chapman has this speci`l report. | :11:29. | :11:31.
We have all seen them standhng tethered with chain or rope in | :11:32. | :11:35.
lay`by is. Some are fed and watered but those left abandoned ard not | :11:36. | :11:38.
only suffering and vulnerable they are reaching such numbers they are | :11:39. | :11:42.
causing major problems across the region. Each case will involve | :11:43. | :11:46.
anything from a horse grazing on land, fly grazing, to seriots animal | :11:47. | :11:52.
cruelty. We have seen a hugd increase in this type of thhng. | :11:53. | :11:59.
People are still breeding of people are breeding constantly and with the | :12:00. | :12:06.
recession there is no sale with horses. | :12:07. | :12:08.
Until recently there were more than a dozen horses tethered and grazing | :12:09. | :12:14.
on this patch of loan on thd edge of Gateshead. Now, there are two and | :12:15. | :12:19.
they do look quite healthy but the RSPCA tell us the problem of | :12:20. | :12:23.
tethered horses being mistrdated is getting far far worse. One of the | :12:24. | :12:30.
biggest tethering injuries hs caused by inappropriate tethering soap he | :12:31. | :12:36.
has got a chain wrapped arotnd and it's been in bed or so somebody has | :12:37. | :12:43.
not been checking to see if it is fitted securely and it has been | :12:44. | :12:48.
rubbing and eventually the skin will grow over the top of it causing a | :12:49. | :12:52.
horrible injury. Here at the RSPCA equine centre | :12:53. | :12:59.
these horses are some of thd 40 stabled here and all are thought to | :13:00. | :13:03.
have been abandoned or tethdred at some stage. Sadly, this is the tip | :13:04. | :13:08.
of the iceberg. Last summer, there were more than 200 tethered horses | :13:09. | :13:13.
in Gateshead alone. It is estimated it costs ?440 a | :13:14. | :13:18.
month to authorities to look after them and last year the constabulary | :13:19. | :13:25.
dealt with Norn road accidents costing more than ?100,000. These | :13:26. | :13:34.
sums are small compared to how much the horses are changing hands full. | :13:35. | :13:38.
Some authorities admit they cannot afford to pick up the bill when | :13:39. | :13:44.
people abandon a horse. There is no obligation on the council to do it, | :13:45. | :13:50.
someone corrects the animals but it is ?450 a month to house thd animals | :13:51. | :13:55.
and we can't afford it. With the creation of an equhne | :13:56. | :13:59.
group, no suggestion is to badger cull in the dry to tackle the | :14:00. | :14:01.
problem. Even creating a market for horse | :14:02. | :14:06.
meat. I don't see why not. We eat cattle and sheep, I think it | :14:07. | :14:11.
is the pet animal side of the horse which makes it an appealing but the | :14:12. | :14:15.
big issue with the scandal was everybody thought they were eating | :14:16. | :14:21.
beef when it was horse meat. If it was labelled horse me`t, it | :14:22. | :14:24.
might be a new market. With the public and likely to have the | :14:25. | :14:27.
stomach for that of the solttion to this problem, it seems others will | :14:28. | :14:32.
have to be found. You're watching Look North. | :14:33. | :14:38.
Still to come this Friday evening, Dawn has all the weekend sport plus | :14:39. | :14:42.
` Living on the border. What can we learn from the Irish experidnce if | :14:43. | :14:45.
Scotland becomes an independent nation? Some sunny weather on the | :14:46. | :14:49.
way but only for a few of us. Find out where it might be in thd weather | :14:50. | :15:33.
forecast. A BBC investigation has found that | :15:34. | :15:37.
more than a quarter of North East housing tenants penalised for having | :15:38. | :15:40.
spare bedrooms are now in rdnt arrears. It's a year since the | :15:41. | :15:43.
Government removed the spard room subsidy ` also known as the bedroom | :15:44. | :15:46.
tax. Now Freedom of Information requests have revealed that | :15:47. | :15:48.
thousands of households in this region have been left out of pocket | :15:49. | :15:52.
by the policy and are struggling to pay their rent. Our politic`l | :15:53. | :15:55.
reporter Luke Walton has bedn looking at the figures. So what were | :15:56. | :15:59.
the main findings? Carol, 14 social housing providers from the north | :16:00. | :16:03.
east responded to the BBC. But many did not. So this is far frol being a | :16:04. | :16:06.
complete picture ` but nonetheless some key issues do emerge. 25,0 0 | :16:07. | :16:15.
households were reported to have lost money because of having spare | :16:16. | :16:19.
bedrooms, one in six of the total. A quarter have gone into arre`rs. More | :16:20. | :16:24.
surprisingly, only a small proportion have moved. In County | :16:25. | :16:33.
Durham, one in 50 moved. Crhtics say there aren't enough one`bedroom | :16:34. | :16:35.
homes for people to move into. And there are other reasons why they | :16:36. | :16:41.
stay put. They wanted to stay and pay, perhaps | :16:42. | :16:46.
they have a disability and need the spare room or maybe they have caring | :16:47. | :16:51.
responsibilities in the are` and it might lead to a breakdown in | :16:52. | :16:54.
relationships. So what is the Government s`ying in | :16:55. | :16:56.
response? Ministers say the reforms are saving | :16:57. | :16:59.
the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds. And they say even if the | :17:00. | :17:04.
process is slow, the policy is gradually freeing up space for | :17:05. | :17:09.
overcrowded families. Supporters of the approach say it's a question of | :17:10. | :17:19.
fairness. A lot of people would say it would | :17:20. | :17:24.
be fair to remove the spare room subsidy to equalise it with the | :17:25. | :17:27.
private sector where people cannot claim housing benefit for spare | :17:28. | :17:30.
rooms. That's the message from the Conservatives. But Labour bdlieve | :17:31. | :17:35.
the Bedroom Tax is deeply unfair and have pledged to abolish it hf it | :17:36. | :17:39.
comes to power. So this is sure to be an election issue. A few sound | :17:40. | :17:48.
problems there. You may havd guessed that. Now, with less than shx months | :17:49. | :17:53.
to go until Scotland decides whether it wants to be independent, what | :17:54. | :17:57.
would be the impact on our region? Many people in Northumberland and | :17:58. | :18:00.
Cumbria cross the Scottish border as part of their daily lives. But what | :18:01. | :18:03.
would life be like with a ndw international border? Our Political | :18:04. | :18:06.
Correspondent Mark Denten h`s been across the Irish Sea to find out. | :18:07. | :18:09.
I'm driving into another cotntry but there are no customs posts, no | :18:10. | :18:12.
passport control. Nothing. Only the road signs give | :18:13. | :18:16.
you a clue that you've crossed from Northern Ireland into the Rdpublic | :18:17. | :18:19.
Of Ireland but with less th`n six months to go until Scotland's | :18:20. | :18:22.
independence referendum our region could soon be next to an | :18:23. | :18:25.
international border too. So what lessons can we learn from hdre? | :18:26. | :18:28.
The Doyle family shopping in Enniskillen ` a Northern Irhsh town | :18:29. | :18:31.
close to the border. The Newcastle United shirts give you a clte of Dad | :18:32. | :18:35.
Mick's roots. Originally from Hebburn, he's been out here for a | :18:36. | :18:40.
decade. The closeness to thd border means he carries a collection of | :18:41. | :18:43.
different currencies. Euros for the Republic Of Ireland, pounds for the | :18:44. | :18:53.
North. You will see you will get the currency, the Stirling prizd and the | :18:54. | :18:56.
bureau price and you can pax for that in sterling or your rose or | :18:57. | :19:00.
both. Of course supporters of Scotland's | :19:01. | :19:03.
Yes campaign for independence say they'd keep the pound ` the | :19:04. | :19:08.
Government says they can't. But 60 miles away the currency divhde's | :19:09. | :19:12.
causing problems for some. We're back in Newcastle ` this ond has no | :19:13. | :19:16.
quayside but a seaside. We `re still in Northern Ireland ` still just up | :19:17. | :19:20.
the road from the Republic but watch repairer Peter does most of his mail | :19:21. | :19:23.
order business with clients in the rest of the UK because he doesn t | :19:24. | :19:27.
like dealing in two currenches. There is an awful lot of trouble | :19:28. | :19:34.
getting euros converted every day to trade that way. It is easier to deal | :19:35. | :19:38.
with companies in the UK on sterling. But this electronhcs | :19:39. | :19:42.
firm's the other side of thd coin. A decade ago they did virtually no | :19:43. | :19:45.
business south of the border now they are part of a cross border | :19:46. | :19:48.
trade creating a thousand jobs a year and different exchange rates | :19:49. | :19:52.
can help them. Quite often hf we are quoting for business, we can end up | :19:53. | :19:54.
being cheaper than the compdtition across the border. That helps us win | :19:55. | :19:58.
new business. Blink and you'll miss the Irish border these days ` it's a | :19:59. | :20:02.
far cry from the days of arly checkpoints. And a new international | :20:03. | :20:05.
border on our doorsteps just as here, it would bring opporttnities | :20:06. | :20:11.
for some and extra costs for others. And Sunday Politics this wedk will | :20:12. | :20:15.
hear more on the possible ilpact of Scottish Independence on thd North ` | :20:16. | :20:18.
that's at the slightly later time of 11.15 this Sunday morning. Now, time | :20:19. | :20:27.
for the sport. There are just 2 hours to go until one of thd biggest | :20:28. | :20:31.
boxing contests to be staged in the region. Darlington boxer Sttart Hall | :20:32. | :20:36.
defends his IBF world bantalweight title against Durham's Marthn Ward | :20:37. | :20:39.

Lonsdale was more than a drdam country. Now I am world chalpion. | :21:13. | :21:15.
It's brilliant. It was only six years ago that Hall swapped his wild | :21:16. | :21:19.
party lifestyle in Ibiza for the professional boxing ring. Jtst 9 | :21:20. | :21:24.

earlier this week on promothonal duties, defends that title `gainst | :21:28. | :21:32.
Durham's Martin Ward. Seven thousand fans are expected at the fight at | :21:33. | :21:35.
the Newcastle Area on Saturday night. Martin Ward thinks you are | :21:36. | :21:45.
the underdog. What do you s`y? The man is deluded. | :21:46. | :21:50.
We will see after a few rounds, I am no underdog, I am the champhon of | :21:51. | :21:55.
the world! It is a huge day for boxing. We have | :21:56. | :22:01.
been trying to get this sort of event up to Newcastle for a long | :22:02. | :22:06.
time. These skies realise it is a huge night for them and the area. | :22:07. | :22:12.

against his former club Southampton ` though the Magpies will bd without | :22:32. | :22:36.

the Magpies are a point above the Saints who're widely considdred to | :22:41. | :22:42.
have had a great season. Despite Tuesday's 3`0 defeat Pardew reckons | :22:43. | :22:46.
his side have done well in often difficult circumstances but has | :22:47. | :22:48.
great admiration for some of Southampton's rising stars. | :22:49. | :23:01.
We have had a season where we have lost a big player halfway through, | :23:02. | :23:05.
we have had nowhere near thd funding Southampton have. In some w`ys you | :23:06. | :23:11.
could argue we were batting against the tide. They have some fantastic | :23:12. | :23:14.
young players coming through, the pick of them is without doubt | :23:15. | :23:21.

knocking them out in the last round. Newcastle Falcons have made another | :24:11. | :24:23.
new signing for next season. Bristol scrum half Ruki Tipuna who's been a | :24:24. | :24:26.
prolific try scorer for the Championship's top side this season | :24:27. | :24:30.
will join up with the squad in the summer. But Dean Richards focus is | :24:31. | :24:33.
on this weekend's bottom of the table clash with former Falcons | :24:34. | :24:36.
captain Dean Ryan's Worcestdr. Newcastle are 12 points above the | :24:37. | :24:39.
Warriors after claiming two bonus points last week and should be safe. | :24:40. | :24:44.
If Worcester win though ` the pressure's back on the Falcons ` if | :24:45. | :24:48.
they lose the West Country side will almost certainly face releg`tion. | :24:49. | :24:57.
It is a massive game for us, there's no getting away from that. Hn | :24:58. | :25:01.
reality, the pressure is on them and not us and we know that. Whdn we go | :25:02. | :25:07.
into the game, we will try to par the pressure on even more. Ht is a | :25:08. | :25:12.
big game for both sides. `` pile the pressure on. | :25:13. | :25:19.
Now, we have been hearing about temperatures of 20 degrees this | :25:20. | :25:24.
weekend but not for us. No, it will be best in the West. | :25:25. | :25:27.
Let's look at the sunny weather picture. The joys of spring. The | :25:28. | :25:33.
daffodils out in force. Thank you for David `` to David for the | :25:34. | :25:42.
picture. Easter was later l`st year but it shows how mild this spring | :25:43. | :25:48.
has been. This weekend, brightest in the West and warmest here. | :25:49. | :25:52.
Overnight, Misty and grey across the hills, drizzly to the north`east | :25:53. | :25:58.
coast, and the Yorkshire Dales. Increasingly in Cumbria the wet | :25:59. | :26:02.
weather will start to dry ott overnight tonight. That sets the | :26:03. | :26:07.
scene for a fine Saturday. Low temperatures around five Celsius | :26:08. | :26:11.
tonight, no frost, quite mild and need the rain clouds. Tomorrow, | :26:12. | :26:17.
Misty and grey, gloomy across North Yorkshire but in the west it starts | :26:18. | :26:23.
to pick up into a really fine day. Through lunchtime, everywhere sees | :26:24. | :26:27.
the skies improve but it st`ys cloudy for much of the north`east. | :26:28. | :26:33.
Fine and dry for North Yorkshire, temperatures nine or 10 Celsius Not | :26:34. | :26:39.
as cold as today. The low cloud drawn in by easterly breezes off the | :26:40. | :26:43.
North Sea keeps temperatures down for much of the region whild rising | :26:44. | :26:49.
when we cross the Pennines. Crossing the northern hills, the clotd has | :26:50. | :26:54.
broken, the sunshine is out across the West, 15 or 16 Celsius. So, | :26:55. | :27:05.
still easterly or south easterly breezes over the weekend, expect | :27:06. | :27:10.
more drizzly, grey conditions in the east through Sunday and Monday and | :27:11. | :27:16.
on Tuesday as well. In Cumbria, the picture is brighter, let's look at | :27:17. | :27:20.
some detail for Cumbrian towns and villages. Bright and dry, w`rm from | :27:21. | :27:27.
most places on Sunday, drizzle on Monday and in the north`east it will | :27:28. | :27:33.
be grey and cold. Oh, dear. Thank you, anyway! That is ht from | :27:34. | :27:40.
us. We are back at 10:25pm. Enjoy your weekend. Good night. | :27:41. | :27:43. |
