Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North.

:00:00.:00:08.

Tonight: The Labour MP for Copeland, Jamie Reed, is resigning

:00:09.:00:13.

from Parliament to take a job at Sellafield.

:00:14.:00:15.

The number of people who say they were abused at a County Durham

:00:16.:00:19.

Could Brexit hit farmers' grazing rights in parts

:00:20.:00:23.

And how this Springer Spaniel has become a worldwide

:00:24.:00:28.

In sport, Newcastle moves a step closer to hosting a major

:00:29.:00:34.

And after four years in exile, Darlington Football Club is all set

:00:35.:00:41.

First tonight: The Labour MP for Copeland and leading

:00:42.:00:59.

critic of Jeremy Corbyn, Jamie Reed, is resigning

:01:00.:01:01.

But Mr Reed says he's leaving to take a job at Sellafield,

:01:02.:01:07.

and not because of any disillusionment with

:01:08.:01:08.

It does, though, trigger a tricky by-election for his party.

:01:09.:01:14.

Jamie Reed's majority in Copeland was just 2,564.

:01:15.:01:18.

Here's our Political Editor Richard Moss.

:01:19.:01:27.

It's not the Christmas present Labour would have wanted.

:01:28.:01:29.

Jamie Reed's resignation will lead to a bruising

:01:30.:01:31.

The Copeland MP is quitting Parliament to take up a job

:01:32.:01:35.

at Sellafield as the nuclear site's head of Development

:01:36.:01:37.

Reed has been a big supporter of the nuclear industry

:01:38.:01:40.

and was a press officer at Sellafield before becoming

:01:41.:01:43.

He was soon seen as a man with the potential to

:01:44.:01:47.

The US Embassy invited him to observe the 2008 Presidential

:01:48.:01:51.

election as they saw him as a future UK political leader,

:01:52.:01:53.

As well as his backing for nuclear power, health has been an important

:01:54.:02:00.

He served as a Shadow Health Minister, and has been

:02:01.:02:04.

at the forefront of the campaign to protect services

:02:05.:02:06.

at the West Cumberland Hospital in his constituency.

:02:07.:02:08.

But he's had his own health problems, spending time in that

:02:09.:02:11.

very hospital in 2010 after being diagnosed with diabetes.

:02:12.:02:14.

And it's not the first time a Jamie Reed resignation has caused

:02:15.:02:17.

He quit as a Shadow Minister just seconds into Mr Corbyn's

:02:18.:02:22.

Since then he's been a fierce critic of a man he sees as leading Labour

:02:23.:02:28.

Jeremy is not suited to lead Labour, not suited to be a potential,

:02:29.:02:33.

Jeremy Corbyn is making life difficult for people who need

:02:34.:02:38.

But he insists today's resignation isn't about the leadership

:02:39.:02:42.

or direction of the party - simply about serving the community

:02:43.:02:45.

He says it's the most difficult decision he's ever made.

:02:46.:02:50.

It will now be down to someone else to defend a Labour majority

:02:51.:02:53.

in Copeland over the Conservatives of just over 2,500.

:02:54.:02:59.

Jamie Reed and Jeremy Corbyn didn't see eye to eye

:03:00.:03:06.

on the future of their party, but the Labour leader has

:03:07.:03:09.

Yes. A lot of Jeremy Corbyn supporters, do not like Jamie Reed

:03:10.:03:23.

but Jeremy Corbyn said that he was powerful for his constituency, and

:03:24.:03:30.

helping infrastructure get to Cumbria. And people that we spoke to

:03:31.:03:35.

today also recognise the work he has done.

:03:36.:03:37.

He's actually personally helped me out in the past.

:03:38.:03:41.

The only one who fights for us in Parliament.

:03:42.:03:48.

there is a question a lot of people are going to be asking. We have not

:03:49.:04:08.

been able to talk to Jamie Reed, but he has also got four children, and

:04:09.:04:14.

does not like travelling to Westminster. Sharp operator. And he

:04:15.:04:21.

knows that this is going to be seen as a taste for Jeremy Corbyn. It is

:04:22.:04:27.

a rare opportunity for the Conservatives to take a Labour seat

:04:28.:04:46.

since 1982. And a lot of Cumbria Lib Dems may try to mop up the Remain

:04:47.:04:55.

vote. Ed Balls has been mentioned. More used to a fox trot. But tactics

:04:56.:05:04.

are to choose someone local. The future of the hospital could be key.

:05:05.:05:12.

But the locals better brace themselves, because that means

:05:13.:05:16.

campaigns, politics, and media types like us.

:05:17.:05:23.

A man who claims he was abused at a children's home has

:05:24.:05:26.

been awarded thousands of pounds in compensation.

:05:27.:05:27.

Hundreds of men are suing the Catholic Church over historical

:05:28.:05:30.

abuse at the St Williams approved school in East Yorkshire, which was

:05:31.:05:33.

Three other men today lost their case for compensation

:05:34.:05:36.

at the High Court in Leeds and another will be

:05:37.:05:39.

For these men, today's High Court judgement wasn't

:05:40.:05:51.

It was the proof they needed that after over 30 years,

:05:52.:05:57.

I still have to live with nightmares of this.

:05:58.:06:08.

It's the worst feeling you can have, to be called a liar,

:06:09.:06:11.

As boys they were delinquents who were sent to the Catholic run

:06:12.:06:17.

St Williams approved school in East Yorkshire.

:06:18.:06:20.

He was one of the boys the former principal,

:06:21.:06:27.

He's been jailed three times now for physically and sexually

:06:28.:06:30.

The former chaplin was jailed in January

:06:31.:06:34.

The home was run by the Diocese of Middlesbrough and the Delacal Order.

:06:35.:06:41.

It is these two Catholic organisations that the former

:06:42.:06:44.

249 men are carrying out this litigation.

:06:45.:06:51.

But it started with just five test cases.

:06:52.:06:54.

Judgements handed down at the High Court in Leeds

:06:55.:06:56.

The judge found only in favour of one claimant.

:06:57.:07:01.

It's become a war of attrition, this case.

:07:02.:07:10.

I'm confident the evidence I've heard, men crying

:07:11.:07:12.

in my office about their cases, means we will succeed.

:07:13.:07:19.

The last judgement in this case will be handed down in the new year.

:07:20.:07:41.

1,400 people have now come forward to say

:07:42.:07:43.

they were abused at the former Medomsley Detention

:07:44.:07:45.

Durham Police's Operation Seabrook has been running for two and a half

:07:46.:07:49.

years and it's spoken to around 20 suspects.

:07:50.:07:51.

The investigation unit is looking at allegations of abuse

:07:52.:07:53.

Our Correspondent Mark Denten is outside the former

:07:54.:07:58.

Than Meadomsley centre closed 20 years ago, but before that it was a

:07:59.:08:14.

crucial part of the criminal justice system. Dealing with what was known

:08:15.:08:26.

as juvenile delinquents. Back at 1985, we were told that the

:08:27.:08:31.

programme was simple. Physical exercise, team building, and hard

:08:32.:08:36.

labour. What that was a front for some of the staff to abuse inmates.

:08:37.:08:43.

And that has been reading to one of the biggest investigations of its

:08:44.:08:45.

time. That was what Medomsley

:08:46.:08:46.

Detention Centre promised. Boys sent here for minor offences

:08:47.:08:50.

would be given three months, But many who walked in here have

:08:51.:08:52.

suffered a much longer punishment. One that's stayed

:08:53.:08:56.

with them for life. It's not the sort of

:08:57.:08:58.

thing you talk about. I have a daughter I

:08:59.:09:00.

want to cuddle, kiss. This is one of the staff

:09:01.:09:05.

who abused Peter. Neville Husband was convicted

:09:06.:09:24.

and he's now died. But Durham Police have since been

:09:25.:09:27.

contacted by 1,400 people who say For two and a half years officers

:09:28.:09:30.

have been painstakingly 20 suspects have been questioned,

:09:31.:09:34.

but the sheer scale of this task Straight away, dealing

year after winning Born in the London in 1949,

:15:34.:15:35.

she spent much of her childhood in Newcastle before studying

:15:36.:15:39.

at Cambridge University. She's lived in County Durham

since the 1980s where she writes You're watching

news with Jeff Brown. Also, how this little dog's

:15:54.:15:55.

adventures on the Lake District Fells have captured the imagination

:15:56.:15:59.

of people around the world! And these donkeys are more little to

:16:00.:16:15.

see a wet and windy Christmas than a white one!

:16:16.:16:22.

Now, as we approach the festive period, we thought it would be nice

:16:23.:16:25.

to highlight some of those who think of others rather than themselves.

:16:26.:16:28.

Tonight we meet the women who've got together to collect toiletries

:16:29.:16:31.

and other items which will be put into handbags and given to women

:16:32.:16:34.

The majority of women would take all of these things for granted.

:16:35.:16:50.

But for those who are homeless, vulnerable, or simply

:16:51.:16:52.

struggling to make ends meet, sanitary and personal hygeine

:16:53.:16:54.

prodicts can be at the end of a very long list of things they need

:16:55.:16:57.

So Gill has set up a project which this Christmas will give

:16:58.:17:07.

handbags packed with these goods to charities, who will then pass

:17:08.:17:09.

them onto women to help them get through the next month with dignity.

:17:10.:17:13.

She was inspire by a Facebook post, depicting a homeless

:17:14.:17:16.

I thought it was upsetting. I did more research. And I find out that

:17:17.:17:42.

there was a need to do this. Sanitary products are classed as

:17:43.:17:53.

luxury in the UK. Taxed at 5%. I think it is essential to try to

:17:54.:17:54.

help. With an initial goal of just over

:17:55.:17:57.

1,000 bags to give out, Gill says it's more likely

:17:58.:18:01.

to be 3,000. But I am also a Joanne's house. One

:18:02.:18:12.

of 40 people collecting these vital items. These are some of the

:18:13.:18:18.

donations that we have received. Toothpaste, soap, foot... And one of

:18:19.:18:27.

the amazing things that has been done, women coming together. It is

:18:28.:18:38.

not just about helping the homeless? It has created a huge network of

:18:39.:18:40.

women, spreading awareness. And what has this meant to you? I cannot put

:18:41.:18:50.

that into words. It has been heart-warming. Fit to burst! I

:18:51.:18:59.

cannot put it into words. I just feel overwhelmed by the number of

:19:00.:19:08.

bags that have come in. The generosity of people, but also sad

:19:09.:19:15.

it is needed. I have started this, people have said it is such a

:19:16.:19:19.

wonderful job that I am doing, but why should we have to do this?

:19:20.:19:28.

When Kerry Irving began taking pictures of his dog Max

:19:29.:19:30.

and sharing them online, little did he realise that

:19:31.:19:32.

within months his dog would become so popular he'd be known

:19:33.:19:35.

Max's adventures on the Lake District Fells have drawn fans

:19:36.:19:38.

to the area from as far afield as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

:19:39.:19:41.

Max is a lucky boy - a nine-year-old springer living

Every day Kerry chronicles Max's adventures: Taking and posting

:20:07.:20:11.

:20:12.:20:16.

Over the course of the last eight months or so, Max has been seen

:20:17.:20:20.

on some of the area's tallest peaks and frolicking on the most

:20:21.:20:23.

It's this that has made him a social media star.

:20:24.:20:28.

We've had people from the USA, Taiwan, Japan, the scout group

:20:29.:20:32.

from Hong Kong arrive to have a photo shoot.

:20:33.:20:38.

People from all over the world send messages daily

:20:39.:20:40.

Almost 13,000 people are following Max online.

:20:41.:20:49.

But Kerry doesn't just want Max to chase peoples' affections -

:20:50.:20:51.

he's hoping his profile can really improve access to his

We've done this successfully with a lady from Sheffield.

:21:07.:21:13.

She came up to Latrigg after never being there for 30 years.

:21:14.:21:18.

So much fun and I'd like to do more of that.

If you want to look Max up, go online and search for Max Out

vital. Vital they come back to Darlington and fans can get here.

to be greeted by a capacity crowd. Just two promotions away from the
