He was a respected businessman, a head teacher | :00:19. | :00:20.
To many, Colin Gregg - from Newcastle - | :00:21. | :00:23.
the son of the founder of Greggs the bakers. | :00:24. | :00:27.
But tonight he faces jail, after being convicted of | :00:28. | :00:29.
a series of sex attacks on boys over almost 30 years. | :00:30. | :00:31.
Our correspondent Peter Harris reports. | :00:32. | :00:36.
Colin Gregg had led something of a life of distinction. | :00:37. | :00:38.
Back in the '60s, he helped build up the family's bakery chain. | :00:39. | :00:49.
He had also been an administrator of the Yellow Brick Road firm. | :00:50. | :00:52.
That was setup to better the lives of children. | :00:53. | :00:54.
As a result of his charity work, he'd even brushed | :00:55. | :00:57.
The Duke of York coming to look at some of the work | :00:58. | :01:00.
There was, however, a suggestion of a dark side in recent years. | :01:01. | :01:04.
In 1997, he'd gone on trial for an allegation | :01:05. | :01:06.
He was found not guilty, but more boys came forward. | :01:07. | :01:11.
And we can now report that last year, he went on trial | :01:12. | :01:14.
A jury found him not guilty of some allegations | :01:15. | :01:22.
of indecent assault but, on many others, | :01:23. | :01:23.
And that's how we ended up in Leeds at a retrial. | :01:24. | :01:32.
And the jury found him guilty of nine counts of indecent | :01:33. | :01:35.
Some of those allegations dating well back to the 1960s. | :01:36. | :01:38.
And outside court we heard this reaction from the police officers | :01:39. | :01:41.
This has been a long and complex inquiry. | :01:42. | :01:49.
Colin Gregg was in a position of trust which he used | :01:50. | :01:52.
We work today's outcome gives the victims some | :01:53. | :01:57.
The case proves that it is never too late to report abuse. | :01:58. | :02:01.
Colin Gregg always claimed that he was the victim of | :02:02. | :02:07.
some kind of police witch hunt, that the boys were liars, motivated | :02:08. | :02:10.
The prosecution said that, beneath his veneer of respectability, | :02:11. | :02:15.
Clearly, that's a version accented by this jury. | :02:16. | :02:22.
Now, he'll be back in court for sentence at Newcastle | :02:23. | :02:25.
The judge has warned him that a custodial sentence is inevitable. | :02:26. | :02:32.
Police investigating the discovery of a body | :02:33. | :02:35.
in a wheelie bin in Gateshead have charged a man with murder. | :02:36. | :02:38.
23 year-old Craig Eade's body was found in a back lane on Wednesday. | :02:39. | :02:43.
A 36-year-old local man is due before magistrates tomorrow, | :02:44. | :02:45.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission says the investigation | :02:46. | :02:51.
into the death of Cumbrian toddler Poppi Worthington | :02:52. | :02:53.
was "disorganised" and "not fit for purpose". | :02:54. | :02:58.
The 13-month-old died at her home in Barrow in 2012. | :02:59. | :03:01.
After her death, a family court judge said Poppi | :03:02. | :03:04.
had probably been abused by her father, Paul. | :03:05. | :03:07.
Today Cumbria police admitted making "basic mistakes" | :03:08. | :03:12.
The blunders that marred the investigation into Poppi's death | :03:13. | :03:22.
began the night officers were called to her home in December 2012. | :03:23. | :03:26.
For instance, the child's last nappy was thrown out, | :03:27. | :03:32.
The investigator found evidence that there had been | :03:33. | :03:42.
It essentially was not fit for purpose. | :03:43. | :03:48.
We found concerns in relation to the way that the scene | :03:49. | :03:51.
The investigation then effectively went into cold storage | :03:52. | :03:56.
while officers waited for pathology reports. | :03:57. | :04:01.
Cumbria's chief constable admits it has been a shameful episode. | :04:02. | :04:06.
They are basic things and I can only apologise to the family | :04:07. | :04:12.
of Poppi Worthington for the basic mistakes that were made. | :04:13. | :04:14.
I am not running away and we are not running away from our inadequacies | :04:15. | :04:18.
We're not trying to cover anything up, | :04:19. | :04:24.
not trying to pretend that it was better that it was. | :04:25. | :04:27.
It was a wholly inadequate investigation. | :04:28. | :04:28.
At an earlier family court hearing, a judge said Poppi | :04:29. | :04:34.
was probably abused by her father, Paul Worthington. | :04:35. | :04:36.
The IPCC report says there was enough evidence | :04:37. | :04:41.
to arrest him on the day of Poppi's death, but delays meant | :04:42. | :04:44.
he was later released without charge. | :04:45. | :04:45.
The police insist they have learned lessons. | :04:46. | :04:49.
With the checks and balances that we've now put in to make sure that | :04:50. | :04:54.
no-one can sit on a case for seven months, I'm confident | :04:55. | :04:56.
that that would not happen again in the same way, | :04:57. | :04:59.
that would be challenged and picked up much quicker. | :05:00. | :05:04.
A pensioner from Durham has finally won her appeal | :05:05. | :05:07.
to sell her home and turn it into student accommodation, | :05:08. | :05:10.
80-year-old Jackie Levitas, who was the only non-student | :05:11. | :05:15.
resident on her street where she has lived for over 40 years, | :05:16. | :05:20.
said she felt forced out of her home due to her rowdy neighbours. | :05:21. | :05:23.
She was originally denied the planning permission | :05:24. | :05:24.
due the number of shared houses there already. | :05:25. | :05:36.
near theirs inside for a rotting ship that has been docked in | :05:37. | :05:49.
Middlesbrough for 18 years. They don't see the hell was once a | :05:50. | :05:55.
nightclub on the time but has been left to rust since its owner went | :05:56. | :06:05.
into Administration. Now Middlesbrough Council has agreed to | :06:06. | :06:10.
pay some of the costs have the ship scrap. | :06:11. | :06:10.
A North Yorkshire pub has gone from closure, | :06:11. | :06:10.
to being named National Pub of the Year. | :06:11. | :06:11.
The George and Dragon, in Hudswell near Richmond, | :06:12. | :06:13.
has won the award from the Campaign for Real Ale. | :06:14. | :06:15.
but it was saved when the local community stepped in. | :06:16. | :06:19.
It's now not only their local pub but also a village library | :06:20. | :06:22.
and a shop, and even has community allotments. | :06:23. | :06:24.
Meanwhile there'll be no more queueing at the bar for drinks | :06:25. | :06:26.
Teesside's first "self-service bar" has opened, | :06:27. | :06:29.
where you're allowed to pull your own pints. | :06:30. | :06:31.
claims to have the region's first "beer wall". | :06:32. | :06:34.
And customers coming through the doors this evening | :06:35. | :06:36.
have been literally helping themselves. | :06:37. | :06:38.
That's all from me tonight, time now to hand over to Jen Bartram | :06:39. | :06:41.
It's a fairly wet night to come tonight. | :06:42. | :06:45.
By the time we get it tomorrow morning, that rain will still be | :06:46. | :06:48.
over much of Cumbria and the north-east as well. | :06:49. | :06:50.
It is going to be pushing away as we head into Saturday. | :06:51. | :06:59.
. Almost too scattered showers following the own. Temperatures in | :07:00. | :07:05.
the sunshine could get up to around 10 Celsius. Heading into Sunday, it | :07:06. | :07:12.
is a mixed picture once again. Some outbreaks of showery rain to start | :07:13. | :07:17.
with, some further rain later in the day. Eastern part is more likely to | :07:18. | :07:22.
stay dry through much of the morning and wet air by the afternoon. | :07:23. | :07:25.
Temperatures on Sunday reaching a high of eight Celsius. Into the | :07:26. | :07:30.
start of next week, remaining unsettled with some further rain at | :07:31. | :07:31.
times. Here is the Good evening, mixed fortunes this | :07:32. | :07:44.
weekend. Today we saw a fair share of rain. This is the view one of our | :07:45. | :07:49.
weather watchers in Doncaster. Not particularly inspiring. This weekend | :07:50. | :07:53.
there will be some rain, but some of us will get away with a dry start. | :07:54. | :08:01.
This is the satellite and a lovely day in northern Scotland. But cloud | :08:02. | :08:09.
and rain and thunder and lightning in this area. Our main area of rain | :08:10. | :08:16.
is stuck across Northern Ireland and Scotland. | :08:17. | :08:19. |
