She was 61, she dedicated her life and all the pupils to study there.

She was 61, she dedicated her life to teaching at this school. Anne

Maguire was stabbed to death just before 12pm. A 15`year`old male

pupil is in custody. It was an event witnessed by many pupils in the

middle of a class. It has devastated every person here at Corpus Christi

Catholic College. Also tonight. Three generations of

one family, including a nine week old baby, die in a house fire in

Sheffield. And the only way is up for the

Spireites after securing automatic promotion at the weekend.

It turned out to be a lovely day, but what about the rest of the

week? Join me for the detailed forecast.

Good evening. Just take a look at these remarkable floral tributes.

Two big lads a moment ago left flowers for their special teacher.

We loved her, they said, she would not have harmed a fly. These have

been building up over the last few hours. This street is about a mile

and a half away from the centre of Leeds. It's also fair to say it is a

challenging area. They call a mistake, this is a good school. The

police have been quick to point out the incident, tragically, was over

almost immediately. The detective superintendent spoke to the media a

short while ago. Whilst the incident itself was over quickly, and no

other pupils or members of staff or members of the public were

threatened or injured, this has clearly been a shocking event for

everybody. Indeed, this is clearly an unprecedented event in Leeds. And

a shocking incident, the likes of which I've not seen in over 25 years

of police service. Today's events are still sinking in for this

family. There is a lot be celebrated about am, and the stories we will

here for a long time about her dedication, her love of teaching,

her contribution to people's lives in the area. Many people we've

spoken to today have so many good things to say about her. Thank you

very much indeed. Let's make one thing clear. This is an excellent

school. Many parents have told me they will move everything they

possibly can to get their children to be educated here. Its leadership

was praised, and the Ofsted report says many teachers were outstanding.

In the society we live in, there are always dangers. And teachers are on

the front line. But just how many weapons are used in schools? Search

the Internet, and it's not difficult to find examples of violence in

schools. There can be `` they can be rough places. Physical violence can

erupt between pupils. Assaults are less common but they are by no means

read. Although the Department of Education doesn't record violent

incidents in schools, it reports the number of pupils excluded for

assaulting adults. In Yorkshire and the hamburger there has been a

decline in recent years. In 2009, 60 pupils were excluded for attacking

style. In 2010, that dropped to 50. The latest figures for 2011 show a

further drop to 40. So, what is happening? Our school seeing less

violence or fewer exclusions for violence? Patrick Murphy is from the

National union of teachers in Leeds and he says this level of violence

is highly unusual. This is very rare, fortunately. There has only

been three in recent years. Even violence against teachers is

extremely rare. Serious finance, with weapons, is extremely rare.

This is extremely unusual. Fortunately. And I doubt it teaches

us what schools are like. Escalating violence in American schools has led

to metal detectors being installed. Even primary schoolchildren now

routinely searched for guns and knives. In this country, schools are

permitted to use metal detectors, and some do. Others, like this

school, welcome police officers on control as a way of making pupils

feeing safe. Should more schools adopt these practices? Hilary Benn

cautions against a knee jerk response. We should let the police

do their work to investigate what went on here. They will do a

thorough job. Before we draw wider conclusions. The most important

thing we can do with the shock we are feeling is to support those most

directly affected, and the community will do that. The school will now

inevitably be subject to intense scrutiny. Whether this incident is

indicative of a wider problem will need careful analysis.

Two recent's son was stabbed to death aged 17. She visits schools

teaching about life crime. This is the first incident of its kind in

nearly 20 years, would you agree it is not a widespread problem? I

wouldn't. This is an isolated incident. I'm with the family at

this time. This school is regarded as a high achieving school in a

tight`knit community, does that make a difference in your experience? It

doesn't matter what the school is, how high it is rated, or how low.

The fact of the matter is kids are taking knives into school. Cade

tummy a little bit about the work you do with pupils in schools? We

run an anti`knife programme. It is a very impact of programme showing the

ripple effect and the consequences of carrying a gun and knife. What

reaction do you get from the schools? Are you mostly welcomed?

When we go into the school, we are very welcomed. I am so welcomed that

we receive letters thanking me from the pupils and saying they've put

the BB gun on the bin, they've told people that should they've told on

people carrying knives. Have you had an issue where schools don't want to

be associated with knife crime and so don't like your support? Yes,

schools do actually... Most of the schools I've encountered seem to

think that I don't need to go into the school because I'll be placing

fear into the heads of the children, which is farcical. We are going into

schools to prevent this happening and to save lives. Thank you for

joining us. Our other main story tonight. Three

generations of one family, including a nine week old baby girl and her

two young brothers, have been killed in a house fire in Sheffield. The

blaze in the Sharrow area began shortly after midnight and at its

height was tackled by 20 fire`fighters. Our reporter Ian

White is there. Good evening. We are very near the

place, and there has been a very sombre mood here. If you take a look

over my shoulder, you can see the house in question, you can see the

windows have been left open. One can only imagine what the scene was like

last night. Two adults and three children tragically died in this

incident. In one of the most horrendous incidents you could ever

imagine. Neighbours laid floral tributes at

the scene of the fire that has claimed the lives of three

generations of one family. While forensics officers from South

Yorkshire Police examined inside the house, a team of officers carried

out a search of the road, looking for anything that could explain what

happened. The fire broke out after midnight and there was little

anybody could do to save the victims. First thing I noticed, the

victims in the building, they were in distress. I think they were

crying. They were shouting for their loved ones, I think. 54`year`old

grandmother had tried to rescue her family but her efforts were in vain

and cost her her own life. A 20 rolled woman died, as did an

nine`year old boy, and his seven`year`old brother.

Nine`week`old baby girl, so young her parents hadn't given her name.

Devastated. The whole community is in a sombre mood. Friends,

relatives. We are all in shock. It is a tragedy beyond imagination. The

children's mother had been in the house but managed to get out. Her

father, a taxi driver, was at work. 25 firefighters found themselves

dealing with a terrible situation. It was a challenging fire, mostly

flames coming out of the property. They were where there were family in

the premises, and they went in with equipment to help them breathe, but

they found five casualties in the property. People living in this

tight`knit community are in shock tonight. We are a very strong

community. It's not just one family it is devastating for, it is the

community that will feel it. This evening, a team of fire

investigators arrived at the scene to help the police find out what

happened. I mention the strength of feeling in the community. When this

incident was happening last night, there were hundreds of people out

here trying to find out what happened, everybody came out of

their houses and offered their support to the grief stricken

family. There has also been support today, ongoing now in the mosque,

where hundreds of people have been praying for the family. One bit of

work from the fire service earlier, they have got investigators who have

returned here this evening. They told us that there was a smoke alarm

fitted to the property, but it wasn't enough, it didn't give people

enough time to do it out of the property. So, it seems like a very

tragic incident. The investigations will continue.

The father of Tony Bland, the young Keighley man regarded as the 96th

victim of the Hillsborough Stadium disaster, has recalled today the

four years of heartache his family suffered when his son was in a coma

on life support. A family impact statement was read to the jury at

the new Hillsborough inquests, describing Tony as a likeable boy

with many friends. Our correspondent John Cundy reports from Warrington.

The tribute from Tony Bland's parents, Alan and Barbara, was read

by a family relative to the inquest jury. Similar statements for all the

96 victims were finally `` will end tomorrow. Tony was 18 when he went

to the match at Hillsborough. 22 when he was allowed to pass away.

Tony Bland died in the Airedale General Hospital in Keighley in

1993, almost four years after being catastrophically injured in the

Hillsborough crashing on the terraces. In a landmark High Court

ruling, judges agreed he could be a `` allowed to die in dignity. A

likeable boy. Not very clever, but he found his level at work. We found

out after he died that he was very well liked. He had a lot of friends.

And, obviously, the four years he was in a coma, that was horrendous.

It is all about quality of life. That is what we based it on. For

Alan and Barbara, and all the families, the victim impact

statements are bringing back so many sad and yet fond memories of their

loved ones. Other news from around the region now.

Motorists in Calderdale face reduced speed limits if councillors vote in

favour of plans for slower traffic this evening. If approved,

residential streets will have a blanket limit of 20mph across the

Calderdale area. Campaigners for the 20 Is Plenty scheme say it'll

improve safety. Opponents, including the RAC and the AA, say blanket

limits are unnecessary. The change will cost half a million pounds.

Mining communities can now apply for grants from a ?1 million fund for

projects near former coalfields. The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is

distributing grants of up to ?10,000 to community organisations and

social enterprises. The grants programme was set up in 2011 to

develop grass roots activities that have a positive impact on coalfields

communities. Nearly 20`0,000 people have benefited so far. `` 200,000

people. Now on to football, and in a

dramatic weekend, we've witnessed the extremes of footballing

emotions. We're going to start with the good news and our League Two

sides who are on the up. Chesterfield are our first team to

secure promotion and York City could follow after making sure of their

place in the play`offs. Ian Bucknell reports. The full`time whistle blew

for the end of the game and the start of the celebrations.

Chesterfield's job this season was to win promotion back to League One.

After a 2`0 win at Burton, they've got the job done. I'm so delighted

for the players. They've worked so hard all season. To reap the reward,

you've got to go away and work hard. To be successful in football is

difficult nowadays. But we've had a great day today. I'm pleased for

everyone connected with our football club. Two second`half goals from Jay

O'Shea completed a season's work. The Spireites have hardly been out

off the top three but they've made hard work of reaching the finishing

line. We had a few goes at it. And we keep tripping up. But we've done

it well. Job done. Three points, and we're going to be champions next

week. Again. Cheers, lads! York City only needed one goal. Michael

Coulson's free kick was enough to see off Newport and make City

certain of the play`offs. We are the big underdogs. So we will go enjoy

the occasion, and do the best we can. Whoever we get, we'll give them

a game. Nigel Worthington's men may be play`off underdogs but this time

last year, they were relegation dogfighters. It's been an absolute

transformation. Absolutely fantastic. I didn't think we were

going to make it. And then, December, it all turned around. We

were near the bottom of the league at the start of the year. And then

we've kind of gone on this amazing run and not conceded many goals. And

we're in the play`offs. It's incredible. But there's still work

to be done before a Wembley final and shot at promotion.

wrestled control of the county championship match. The visitors

took seven wickets before lunch, as Middlesex were dismissed for 123.

Yorkshire close the day on 213`4, with Captain Joe Root scoring 63.

The Rugby League season is gaining pace. We are down to the last eight

in the Challenge Cup. Bradford Bulls put their Super League woes behind

them with a cracking 33`20 win over Catalan Dragons. They found

themselves 16`0 down after the first 20 minutes but clawed their way back

after half`time and never looked back. The draw for the quarterfinals

of the Challenge Cup has just taken place. Radford have earned a home

tie against Warrington. Meanwhile, Castleford travelled to Wigan. The

display li centurions, and Keith Lulia away at Widnes Vikings. You

can see how those teams made it to the quarterfinals tonight at

11:55pm. The forecast now.

is what we will expect in coastal areas tomorrow, that is Whitby

tomorrow, it will be a fine day with a great start. Sunny spells will

develop, but it looks as though the coast will be prone to low cloud on

and off through the course of the day. The cloud broke nicely, we had

17 degrees quite widely across Yorkshire. So, a bright and warm

evening to come. Just the isolated shower here in there, mainly in

western areas. These showers will fizzle away. That low cloud will

pull in land, so it is a grey end to the day. The lowest temperatures, no

problems there. Seven or eight. We will have a light easterly breeze.

The sun will rise in the morning at 5:35am.

A very grey start to many areas. You might be stuck in it near the hills.

That mist and fog will lift, the low cloud will break, and by the

afternoon, we will have sunny spells with a risk of an isolated shower

perhaps over the Pennines, but for most of us, it will be fine. The

coast will be prone to some cloud were brightening up sometimes.

Consequently, the temperatures are depressed on the coast. Ten or 11,

if you're lucky. Inland, the other side of the North York Moors, 17.

Possibly the odd 18 in Sheffield city centre. Wednesday, a similar

story, grey start, brightening up with the risk of some showers, a lot

of uncertainty about Thursday, but it might turn out to be a rainy day.

amazing teacher, Heaven has gained an angel. Thank you for teaching

And you're the best teacher ever. You've talked three generations of
