She was 61, she dedicated her life and all the pupils to study there. | :00:08. | :00:09.
She was 61, she dedicated her life to teaching at this school. Anne | :00:10. | :00:14.
Maguire was stabbed to death just before 12pm. A 15`year`old male | :00:15. | :00:19.
pupil is in custody. It was an event witnessed by many pupils in the | :00:20. | :00:23.
middle of a class. It has devastated every person here at Corpus Christi | :00:24. | :00:28.
Catholic College. Also tonight. Three generations of | :00:29. | :00:32.
one family, including a nine week old baby, die in a house fire in | :00:33. | :00:34.
Sheffield. And the only way is up for the | :00:35. | :00:37.
Spireites after securing automatic promotion at the weekend. | :00:38. | :00:43.
It turned out to be a lovely day, but what about the rest of the | :00:44. | :00:47.
week? Join me for the detailed forecast. | :00:48. | :00:57.
Good evening. Just take a look at these remarkable floral tributes. | :00:58. | :01:07.
Two big lads a moment ago left flowers for their special teacher. | :01:08. | :01:11.
We loved her, they said, she would not have harmed a fly. These have | :01:12. | :01:15.
been building up over the last few hours. This street is about a mile | :01:16. | :01:22.
and a half away from the centre of Leeds. It's also fair to say it is a | :01:23. | :01:26.
challenging area. They call a mistake, this is a good school. The | :01:27. | :01:31.
police have been quick to point out the incident, tragically, was over | :01:32. | :01:37.
almost immediately. The detective superintendent spoke to the media a | :01:38. | :01:42.
short while ago. Whilst the incident itself was over quickly, and no | :01:43. | :01:47.
other pupils or members of staff or members of the public were | :01:48. | :01:52.
threatened or injured, this has clearly been a shocking event for | :01:53. | :01:57.
everybody. Indeed, this is clearly an unprecedented event in Leeds. And | :01:58. | :02:02.
a shocking incident, the likes of which I've not seen in over 25 years | :02:03. | :02:08.
of police service. Today's events are still sinking in for this | :02:09. | :02:11.
Things this will overshadow things school and their links with it. | :02:12. | :07:26.
Things this will overshadow things for a while. Our go out to the | :07:27. | :07:31.
family. There is a lot be celebrated about am, and the stories we will | :07:32. | :07:35.
here for a long time about her dedication, her love of teaching, | :07:36. | :07:40.
her contribution to people's lives in the area. Many people we've | :07:41. | :07:44.
spoken to today have so many good things to say about her. Thank you | :07:45. | :07:51.
very much indeed. Let's make one thing clear. This is an excellent | :07:52. | :07:55.
school. Many parents have told me they will move everything they | :07:56. | :07:59.
possibly can to get their children to be educated here. Its leadership | :08:00. | :08:04.
was praised, and the Ofsted report says many teachers were outstanding. | :08:05. | :08:09.
In the society we live in, there are always dangers. And teachers are on | :08:10. | :08:14.
the front line. But just how many weapons are used in schools? Search | :08:15. | :08:21.
the Internet, and it's not difficult to find examples of violence in | :08:22. | :08:27.
schools. There can be `` they can be rough places. Physical violence can | :08:28. | :08:31.
erupt between pupils. Assaults are less common but they are by no means | :08:32. | :08:35.
read. Although the Department of Education doesn't record violent | :08:36. | :08:41.
incidents in schools, it reports the number of pupils excluded for | :08:42. | :08:45.
assaulting adults. In Yorkshire and the hamburger there has been a | :08:46. | :08:50.
decline in recent years. In 2009, 60 pupils were excluded for attacking | :08:51. | :08:56.
style. In 2010, that dropped to 50. The latest figures for 2011 show a | :08:57. | :09:02.
further drop to 40. So, what is happening? Our school seeing less | :09:03. | :09:05.
violence or fewer exclusions for violence? Patrick Murphy is from the | :09:06. | :09:11.
National union of teachers in Leeds and he says this level of violence | :09:12. | :09:19.
is highly unusual. This is very rare, fortunately. There has only | :09:20. | :09:24.
been three in recent years. Even violence against teachers is | :09:25. | :09:27.
extremely rare. Serious finance, with weapons, is extremely rare. | :09:28. | :09:32.
This is extremely unusual. Fortunately. And I doubt it teaches | :09:33. | :09:39.
us what schools are like. Escalating violence in American schools has led | :09:40. | :09:44.
to metal detectors being installed. Even primary schoolchildren now | :09:45. | :09:47.
routinely searched for guns and knives. In this country, schools are | :09:48. | :09:52.
permitted to use metal detectors, and some do. Others, like this | :09:53. | :09:56.
school, welcome police officers on control as a way of making pupils | :09:57. | :10:04.
feeing safe. Should more schools adopt these practices? Hilary Benn | :10:05. | :10:09.
cautions against a knee jerk response. We should let the police | :10:10. | :10:13.
do their work to investigate what went on here. They will do a | :10:14. | :10:18.
thorough job. Before we draw wider conclusions. The most important | :10:19. | :10:22.
thing we can do with the shock we are feeling is to support those most | :10:23. | :10:27.
directly affected, and the community will do that. The school will now | :10:28. | :10:34.
inevitably be subject to intense scrutiny. Whether this incident is | :10:35. | :10:38.
indicative of a wider problem will need careful analysis. | :10:39. | :10:49.
Two recent's son was stabbed to death aged 17. She visits schools | :10:50. | :10:53.
teaching about life crime. This is the first incident of its kind in | :10:54. | :10:57.
nearly 20 years, would you agree it is not a widespread problem? I | :10:58. | :11:05.
wouldn't. This is an isolated incident. I'm with the family at | :11:06. | :11:11.
this time. This school is regarded as a high achieving school in a | :11:12. | :11:14.
tight`knit community, does that make a difference in your experience? It | :11:15. | :11:19.
doesn't matter what the school is, how high it is rated, or how low. | :11:20. | :11:24.
The fact of the matter is kids are taking knives into school. Cade | :11:25. | :11:29.
tummy a little bit about the work you do with pupils in schools? We | :11:30. | :11:38.
run an anti`knife programme. It is a very impact of programme showing the | :11:39. | :11:42.
ripple effect and the consequences of carrying a gun and knife. What | :11:43. | :11:47.
reaction do you get from the schools? Are you mostly welcomed? | :11:48. | :11:52.
When we go into the school, we are very welcomed. I am so welcomed that | :11:53. | :11:56.
we receive letters thanking me from the pupils and saying they've put | :11:57. | :12:03.
the BB gun on the bin, they've told people that should they've told on | :12:04. | :12:07.
people carrying knives. Have you had an issue where schools don't want to | :12:08. | :12:13.
be associated with knife crime and so don't like your support? Yes, | :12:14. | :12:20.
schools do actually... Most of the schools I've encountered seem to | :12:21. | :12:25.
think that I don't need to go into the school because I'll be placing | :12:26. | :12:30.
fear into the heads of the children, which is farcical. We are going into | :12:31. | :12:34.
schools to prevent this happening and to save lives. Thank you for | :12:35. | :12:42.
joining us. Our other main story tonight. Three | :12:43. | :12:45.
generations of one family, including a nine week old baby girl and her | :12:46. | :12:49.
two young brothers, have been killed in a house fire in Sheffield. The | :12:50. | :12:52.
blaze in the Sharrow area began shortly after midnight and at its | :12:53. | :12:55.
height was tackled by 20 fire`fighters. Our reporter Ian | :12:56. | :13:00.
White is there. Good evening. We are very near the | :13:01. | :13:05.
place, and there has been a very sombre mood here. If you take a look | :13:06. | :13:12.
over my shoulder, you can see the house in question, you can see the | :13:13. | :13:16.
windows have been left open. One can only imagine what the scene was like | :13:17. | :13:20.
last night. Two adults and three children tragically died in this | :13:21. | :13:24.
incident. In one of the most horrendous incidents you could ever | :13:25. | :13:27.
imagine. Neighbours laid floral tributes at | :13:28. | :13:31.
the scene of the fire that has claimed the lives of three | :13:32. | :13:35.
generations of one family. While forensics officers from South | :13:36. | :13:37.
Yorkshire Police examined inside the house, a team of officers carried | :13:38. | :13:42.
out a search of the road, looking for anything that could explain what | :13:43. | :13:46.
happened. The fire broke out after midnight and there was little | :13:47. | :13:49.
anybody could do to save the victims. First thing I noticed, the | :13:50. | :13:56.
victims in the building, they were in distress. I think they were | :13:57. | :14:02.
crying. They were shouting for their loved ones, I think. 54`year`old | :14:03. | :14:08.
grandmother had tried to rescue her family but her efforts were in vain | :14:09. | :14:15.
and cost her her own life. A 20 rolled woman died, as did an | :14:16. | :14:18.
nine`year old boy, and his seven`year`old brother. | :14:19. | :14:24.
Nine`week`old baby girl, so young her parents hadn't given her name. | :14:25. | :14:29.
Devastated. The whole community is in a sombre mood. Friends, | :14:30. | :14:37.
relatives. We are all in shock. It is a tragedy beyond imagination. The | :14:38. | :14:41.
children's mother had been in the house but managed to get out. Her | :14:42. | :14:47.
father, a taxi driver, was at work. 25 firefighters found themselves | :14:48. | :14:51.
dealing with a terrible situation. It was a challenging fire, mostly | :14:52. | :14:55.
flames coming out of the property. They were where there were family in | :14:56. | :15:08.
the premises, and they went in with equipment to help them breathe, but | :15:09. | :15:12.
they found five casualties in the property. People living in this | :15:13. | :15:16.
tight`knit community are in shock tonight. We are a very strong | :15:17. | :15:23.
community. It's not just one family it is devastating for, it is the | :15:24. | :15:26.
community that will feel it. This evening, a team of fire | :15:27. | :15:32.
investigators arrived at the scene to help the police find out what | :15:33. | :15:38.
happened. I mention the strength of feeling in the community. When this | :15:39. | :15:41.
incident was happening last night, there were hundreds of people out | :15:42. | :15:45.
here trying to find out what happened, everybody came out of | :15:46. | :15:49.
their houses and offered their support to the grief stricken | :15:50. | :15:52.
family. There has also been support today, ongoing now in the mosque, | :15:53. | :15:57.
where hundreds of people have been praying for the family. One bit of | :15:58. | :16:03.
work from the fire service earlier, they have got investigators who have | :16:04. | :16:06.
returned here this evening. They told us that there was a smoke alarm | :16:07. | :16:12.
fitted to the property, but it wasn't enough, it didn't give people | :16:13. | :16:16.
enough time to do it out of the property. So, it seems like a very | :16:17. | :16:20.
tragic incident. The investigations will continue. | :16:21. | :16:23.
Another very tragic story tonight. Thank you. | :16:24. | :16:26.
The father of Tony Bland, the young Keighley man regarded as the 96th | :16:27. | :16:29.
victim of the Hillsborough Stadium disaster, has recalled today the | :16:30. | :16:32.
four years of heartache his family suffered when his son was in a coma | :16:33. | :16:36.
on life support. A family impact statement was read to the jury at | :16:37. | :16:39.
the new Hillsborough inquests, describing Tony as a likeable boy | :16:40. | :16:43.
with many friends. Our correspondent John Cundy reports from Warrington. | :16:44. | :16:53.
The tribute from Tony Bland's parents, Alan and Barbara, was read | :16:54. | :16:58.
by a family relative to the inquest jury. Similar statements for all the | :16:59. | :17:03.
96 victims were finally `` will end tomorrow. Tony was 18 when he went | :17:04. | :17:10.
to the match at Hillsborough. 22 when he was allowed to pass away. | :17:11. | :17:17.
Tony Bland died in the Airedale General Hospital in Keighley in | :17:18. | :17:20.
1993, almost four years after being catastrophically injured in the | :17:21. | :17:25.
Hillsborough crashing on the terraces. In a landmark High Court | :17:26. | :17:31.
ruling, judges agreed he could be a `` allowed to die in dignity. A | :17:32. | :17:40.
likeable boy. Not very clever, but he found his level at work. We found | :17:41. | :17:47.
out after he died that he was very well liked. He had a lot of friends. | :17:48. | :17:56.
And, obviously, the four years he was in a coma, that was horrendous. | :17:57. | :18:01.
It is all about quality of life. That is what we based it on. For | :18:02. | :18:08.
Alan and Barbara, and all the families, the victim impact | :18:09. | :18:12.
statements are bringing back so many sad and yet fond memories of their | :18:13. | :18:21.
loved ones. Other news from around the region now. | :18:22. | :18:22.
Motorists in Calderdale face reduced speed limits if councillors vote in | :18:23. | :18:26.
favour of plans for slower traffic this evening. If approved, | :18:27. | :18:28.
residential streets will have a blanket limit of 20mph across the | :18:29. | :18:32.
Calderdale area. Campaigners for the 20 Is Plenty scheme say it'll | :18:33. | :18:36.
improve safety. Opponents, including the RAC and the AA, say blanket | :18:37. | :18:40.
limits are unnecessary. The change will cost half a million pounds. | :18:41. | :18:46.
Mining communities can now apply for grants from a ?1 million fund for | :18:47. | :18:51.
projects near former coalfields. The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is | :18:52. | :18:54.
distributing grants of up to ?10,000 to community organisations and | :18:55. | :18:58.
social enterprises. The grants programme was set up in 2011 to | :18:59. | :19:02.
develop grass roots activities that have a positive impact on coalfields | :19:03. | :19:08.
communities. Nearly 20`0,000 people have benefited so far. `` 200,000 | :19:09. | :19:14.
people. Now on to football, and in a | :19:15. | :19:17.
dramatic weekend, we've witnessed the extremes of footballing | :19:18. | :19:21.
emotions. We're going to start with the good news and our League Two | :19:22. | :19:24.
sides who are on the up. Chesterfield are our first team to | :19:25. | :19:28.
secure promotion and York City could follow after making sure of their | :19:29. | :19:31.
place in the play`offs. Ian Bucknell reports. The full`time whistle blew | :19:32. | :19:35.
for the end of the game and the start of the celebrations. | :19:36. | :19:37.
Chesterfield's job this season was to win promotion back to League One. | :19:38. | :19:42.
After a 2`0 win at Burton, they've got the job done. I'm so delighted | :19:43. | :19:47.
for the players. They've worked so hard all season. To reap the reward, | :19:48. | :19:51.
you've got to go away and work hard. To be successful in football is | :19:52. | :19:54.
difficult nowadays. But we've had a great day today. I'm pleased for | :19:55. | :19:57.
everyone connected with our football club. Two second`half goals from Jay | :19:58. | :20:01.
O'Shea completed a season's work. The Spireites have hardly been out | :20:02. | :20:04.
off the top three but they've made hard work of reaching the finishing | :20:05. | :20:10.
line. We had a few goes at it. And we keep tripping up. But we've done | :20:11. | :20:16.
it well. Job done. Three points, and we're going to be champions next | :20:17. | :20:23.
week. Again. Cheers, lads! York City only needed one goal. Michael | :20:24. | :20:28.
Coulson's free kick was enough to see off Newport and make City | :20:29. | :20:35.
certain of the play`offs. We are the big underdogs. So we will go enjoy | :20:36. | :20:39.
the occasion, and do the best we can. Whoever we get, we'll give them | :20:40. | :20:45.
a game. Nigel Worthington's men may be play`off underdogs but this time | :20:46. | :20:48.
last year, they were relegation dogfighters. It's been an absolute | :20:49. | :20:53.
transformation. Absolutely fantastic. I didn't think we were | :20:54. | :20:57.
going to make it. And then, December, it all turned around. We | :20:58. | :21:01.
were near the bottom of the league at the start of the year. And then | :21:02. | :21:05.
we've kind of gone on this amazing run and not conceded many goals. And | :21:06. | :21:08.
we're in the play`offs. It's incredible. But there's still work | :21:09. | :21:12.
to be done before a Wembley final and shot at promotion. | :21:13. | :21:20.
And you can see all the weekend's football action on Late Kick Off | :21:21. | :21:27.
tonight at 11:25pm. On to cricket. Yorkshire have | :21:28. | :21:31.
wrestled control of the county championship match. The visitors | :21:32. | :21:35.
took seven wickets before lunch, as Middlesex were dismissed for 123. | :21:36. | :21:43.
Yorkshire close the day on 213`4, with Captain Joe Root scoring 63. | :21:44. | :21:47.
The Rugby League season is gaining pace. We are down to the last eight | :21:48. | :21:53.
in the Challenge Cup. Bradford Bulls put their Super League woes behind | :21:54. | :21:58.
them with a cracking 33`20 win over Catalan Dragons. They found | :21:59. | :22:02.
themselves 16`0 down after the first 20 minutes but clawed their way back | :22:03. | :22:06.
after half`time and never looked back. The draw for the quarterfinals | :22:07. | :22:11.
of the Challenge Cup has just taken place. Radford have earned a home | :22:12. | :22:17.
tie against Warrington. Meanwhile, Castleford travelled to Wigan. The | :22:18. | :22:23.
display li centurions, and Keith Lulia away at Widnes Vikings. You | :22:24. | :22:29.
can see how those teams made it to the quarterfinals tonight at | :22:30. | :22:32.
11:55pm. The forecast now. | :22:33. | :22:40.
Just a few nice pictures to show you. This one caught my eye. Sharon | :22:41. | :22:47.
says, I was lucky enough to take this shot as this carpet wasn't | :22:48. | :22:51.
around for long. Next, the bluebells alt in force. `` out in force. This | :22:52. | :23:01.
is what we will expect in coastal areas tomorrow, that is Whitby | :23:02. | :23:05.
Abbey, of course. Send your pictures through to me or tweaked me. So, | :23:06. | :23:12.
tomorrow, it will be a fine day with a great start. Sunny spells will | :23:13. | :23:18.
develop, but it looks as though the coast will be prone to low cloud on | :23:19. | :23:22.
and off through the course of the day. The cloud broke nicely, we had | :23:23. | :23:29.
17 degrees quite widely across Yorkshire. So, a bright and warm | :23:30. | :23:36.
evening to come. Just the isolated shower here in there, mainly in | :23:37. | :23:39.
western areas. These showers will fizzle away. That low cloud will | :23:40. | :23:46.
pull in land, so it is a grey end to the day. The lowest temperatures, no | :23:47. | :23:56.
problems there. Seven or eight. We will have a light easterly breeze. | :23:57. | :24:00.
The sun will rise in the morning at 5:35am. | :24:01. | :24:08.
A very grey start to many areas. You might be stuck in it near the hills. | :24:09. | :24:20.
That mist and fog will lift, the low cloud will break, and by the | :24:21. | :24:25.
afternoon, we will have sunny spells with a risk of an isolated shower | :24:26. | :24:29.
perhaps over the Pennines, but for most of us, it will be fine. The | :24:30. | :24:34.
coast will be prone to some cloud were brightening up sometimes. | :24:35. | :24:40.
Consequently, the temperatures are depressed on the coast. Ten or 11, | :24:41. | :24:45.
if you're lucky. Inland, the other side of the North York Moors, 17. | :24:46. | :24:52.
