scattered showers but the driest day of the weekend. | :00:00. | :00:13.
The Yorkshire hospital wherd Jimmy Savile assaulted 60 victims... | :00:14. | :00:18.
How did he get away with his sex attacks for half a century? | :00:19. | :00:21.
You just feel dirty, you feel ridiculously stupid | :00:22. | :00:23.
because I didn't think I was that naive, clearly I was. | :00:24. | :00:26.
We'll ask why senior managers weren't aware of his crimes. | :00:27. | :00:28.
There was a degree of naivete, there was a degree of starstruck | :00:29. | :00:31.
fan enthralled with the celdbrity associated with the organis`tion. | :00:32. | :00:36.
The hospitals' boss will tell us what's being done to make stre | :00:37. | :00:38.
patients and staffs are safdr in future. | :00:39. | :00:40.
Could Scarborough lose its direct train service to some | :00:41. | :00:44.
And the school children cre`ting their own version of pedal power | :00:45. | :00:51.
as they gear up to watch the world's greatest cycle race | :00:52. | :01:03.
It is looking cloudy and thdre will be some patchy rain around, join me | :01:04. | :01:08.
for the forecasts. The chief executive of the | :01:09. | :01:16.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals has spoken of his anger, revulsion and horror | :01:17. | :01:21.
at the sexual crimes committed by Jimmy Savile during his 40`year | :01:22. | :01:23.
association with the Leeds General An independent inquiry publhshed | :01:24. | :01:26.
today has revealed the scald of the abuse and the ease whth which | :01:27. | :01:30.
Savile gained access to the wards. According to the latest figtres | :01:31. | :01:34.
there were 60 victims at thd Leeds General Infirmary ` | :01:35. | :01:37.
the majority were teenagers. But the youngest was just fhve, | :01:38. | :01:42.
the oldest 75. The incidents ranged from | :01:43. | :01:47.
inappropriate behaviour to sexual The most recent incident took place | :01:48. | :01:49.
in 2009 when Savile was 82 ` The report also says hospit`l staff | :01:50. | :01:57.
?didn't want to hear or belheve We'll be asking the chief executive | :01:58. | :02:03.
of the Leeds General Infirm`ry if he can guarantee this will never | :02:04. | :02:10.
happen again, but first, It was quite normal to see him | :02:11. | :02:13.
around wards and departments This unrestricted access gave | :02:14. | :02:20.
Jimmy Savile ample opportunhty to indulge in abusive and inappropriate | :02:21. | :02:26.
contact with patients and staff The full extent of Jimmy Savile s | :02:27. | :02:31.
sexual offences revealed at today's news conference, | :02:32. | :02:35.
reports from 28 hospitals across the country where Jilmy | :02:36. | :02:37.
Savile offended, but most of his Today's report | :02:38. | :02:41.
from the NHS makes grim reading For half a century, | :02:42. | :02:48.
Jimmy Savile carried out his sexual attacks on men, women | :02:49. | :02:50.
and children, patients and staff When complaints were made, | :02:51. | :02:53.
they were ignored. No investigations were | :02:54. | :03:01.
ever carried out. In statements to the enquirx, | :03:02. | :03:06.
one witness said Jimmy Savile was A daughter said | :03:07. | :03:09.
of her now deceased mother... For years, | :03:10. | :03:27.
Jimmy Savile roamed the corridors and wards of the LGI unchecked as | :03:28. | :03:29.
a volunteer porter and fundraiser. The perception, the tone, | :03:30. | :03:37.
if you like, was set. People thought he was powerful | :03:38. | :03:39.
and because there was never any reconsideration of "what is this man | :03:40. | :03:42.
doing in this organisation?" over that 50 year period, | :03:43. | :03:47.
that was never challenged. What was very clear was that there | :03:48. | :03:53.
was a number of organisational failings actually, right | :03:54. | :03:55.
the way through those 50 ye`rs that enabled him to thrive unchallenged | :03:56. | :03:58.
for such a long period of thme. Jimmy Savile could have been stopped | :03:59. | :04:03.
so much sooner if people had acted sooner and many, many victils could | :04:04. | :04:06.
have been speared dreadful ordeals. Today's report by the NHS on | :04:07. | :04:12.
Jimmy Savile's crimes has bden John Cundy, BBC Look North, | :04:13. | :04:17.
North London. The government today apologhsed | :04:18. | :04:24.
to all the victims. The Health Secretary, Jeremx Hunt, | :04:25. | :04:27.
praised them for giving evidence. He told the Commons that Savile was | :04:28. | :04:30.
a "callous, opportunist and wicked predator", whose victims | :04:31. | :04:33.
were ignored ?time and again". We let them down badly and however | :04:34. | :04:40.
long ago it may have been, many of them are still reliving | :04:41. | :04:43.
the pain they went through. If we cannot undo the past, | :04:44. | :04:47.
I hope that honesty and transparency about what happened can at least | :04:48. | :04:51.
alleviate some of the suffering So how could Jimmy Savile gdt away | :04:52. | :04:54.
with his crimes Our health correspondent Jalie | :04:55. | :05:01.
Coulson has been looking at his involvement with the | :05:02. | :05:05.
Leeds General Infirmary. In the place, Jimmy Savile was a | :05:06. | :05:17.
flamboyant celebrity and ch`rity fundraiser, Mbeki is remembdred as a | :05:18. | :05:21.
predatory paedophiles and sdx offender. Today the full extent of | :05:22. | :05:27.
its cranes at hospitals across the country became clear, it was here at | :05:28. | :05:32.
the beads General infirmary in his home city that the sheer sc`le of | :05:33. | :05:40.
that abuse was at its worse. These wards have not changed sincd | :05:41. | :05:45.
Florence Nightingale's time. Jimmy Savile started his associathon with | :05:46. | :05:51.
this hospital in the 1930s. He was a voluntary porter and fundrahser but | :05:52. | :05:57.
he abused many over decades, the youngest five years old and the | :05:58. | :06:03.
oldest 75. Jane was 16 when she was taken into the hospital basdment and | :06:04. | :06:07.
abused in the 1970s. I felt like I was the chosen one, absolutdly the | :06:08. | :06:13.
chosen one and even to the point that I was taken down into the room, | :06:14. | :06:18.
I felt like the chosen one. It is only after it has all happened that | :06:19. | :06:23.
you just feel dirty, you fedl ridiculously stupid, becausd I did | :06:24. | :06:29.
not think I was that naive. Jimmy Savile often spoke proudly of his | :06:30. | :06:34.
involvement with hospitals, in hindsight has comments appe`r to be | :06:35. | :06:40.
chilling. A hospital is everything that I wake in this moment hn time. | :06:41. | :06:46.
A lot of people, a 24`hour scene, you go to bed because you w`nt to, | :06:47. | :06:51.
not because you have to. People are in bed so they cannot get up and get | :06:52. | :06:56.
actually. He had restricted access to the Leeds General Infirm`ry and | :06:57. | :07:01.
had three officers and spent a great deal of time in the old A | :07:02. | :07:05.
department, but they could visit anywhere and abuse his victhms in | :07:06. | :07:15.
corridors. When you are abused by a celebrity and they are intilidated | :07:16. | :07:19.
into being quiet and they are frightened that they will not be | :07:20. | :07:22.
believed, the celebrity status of this individual was very powerful. | :07:23. | :07:30.
Jimmy Savile's crimes ranged from inappropriate touching to r`pe. | :07:31. | :07:37.
These people where vulnerable. It has changed their lives. Thdy do not | :07:38. | :07:42.
know what their life would have been otherwise, but we know it h`s been | :07:43. | :07:46.
changed and the relationships within their own families. They have had to | :07:47. | :07:52.
learn to cope with that. Many of his victims still be worth the `buse | :07:53. | :07:57.
each day, any place where they should have been safe. | :07:58. | :08:02.
Earlier I asked the chief executive of the LGI, Julian Hartley, | :08:03. | :08:05.
exactly who is accountable for Savile's abuse at the hospital. | :08:06. | :08:09.
First and foremost, what we must see, and we do need to see sorry to | :08:10. | :08:17.
all of the victims of Jimmy Savile. This report as profoundly shocking. | :08:18. | :08:22.
In terms of accountability, the report is very clear in that. It | :08:23. | :08:27.
flags up that concerns raisdd were not escalated to senior man`gement | :08:28. | :08:30.
levels and therefore action was not taken. What procedures are hn place | :08:31. | :08:38.
and are now in place to enstre that patients can report abuse and now | :08:39. | :08:43.
come forward? I was about to say we are in a very different place today | :08:44. | :08:47.
compared to the stories in the report and the accounts of victims | :08:48. | :08:54.
in the 1960s and 1970s. We have an open culture and we have worked hard | :08:55. | :08:57.
to ensure we have a strong whistle`blowing policy developed | :08:58. | :09:00.
with a range of colleagues, patients, staff, the public. | :09:01. | :09:05.
Everyone should be able to raise concerns openly and quickly and as a | :09:06. | :09:11.
group of leaders within the organisation we take our | :09:12. | :09:13.
responsibilities extremely seriously. There are lots of | :09:14. | :09:18.
volunteers working in hospitals how can you ensure the correct checks | :09:19. | :09:21.
are in place to insure this does not happen to someone else? We lake sure | :09:22. | :09:26.
we have clear policies for our volunteers. All of them are checked | :09:27. | :09:33.
and indeed, we make sure th`t we have got the right procedurds and | :09:34. | :09:37.
training in place so that volunteers can work effectively alongshde our | :09:38. | :09:43.
full`time members of staff. Volunteering is very import`nt to us | :09:44. | :09:47.
but it is vital that that t`kes place within the context of good | :09:48. | :09:50.
controls, patient safety, which is our top priority. Some of this abuse | :09:51. | :09:59.
happened recently as much as in 2009, can you ensure that this will | :10:00. | :10:02.
not happen again? The measures we have in place with our open culture | :10:03. | :10:08.
combined with a set of policies that enable us to have visibilitx on key | :10:09. | :10:14.
issues and risks now put th`t into a stronger position and it is very | :10:15. | :10:17.
important to say that all the work that has been going on over recent | :10:18. | :10:22.
years and particularly sincd we have been working on this issue over the | :10:23. | :10:27.
recent months has meant that we are fully confident about the extent to | :10:28. | :10:31.
which we have an open and transparent culture in the trust and | :10:32. | :10:36.
that staff are confident th`t they can report on any issue, however | :10:37. | :10:41.
small it may seem, and we whll always ensure that we keep our | :10:42. | :10:45.
patients safe with an open culture that enables any issue to fhnd an | :10:46. | :10:50.
action and appropriate response Thank you, Julian Hartley. | :10:51. | :10:55.
There are still more reports to come, including one on | :10:56. | :10:57.
Stoke Mandeville Hospital and one on his activities at the BBC, which | :10:58. | :11:00.
A new Olympic`style velodrole for York. | :11:01. | :11:05.
We put it to the test ahead of its official opening next month. | :11:06. | :11:11.

Event organisers willing to host the 2015 Sheffield Half Mar`thon | :11:56. | :12:02.
are being asked to contact Sheffield Council. | :12:03. | :12:04.
The directors and organising committee of this year's half | :12:05. | :12:07.
marathon stood down after the event was called off at the last linute. | :12:08. | :12:11.
Water supplies failed to arrive but many runners carried on reg`rdless. | :12:12. | :12:16.
Sheffield Council is now holding a bidding process to find a company | :12:17. | :12:19.
which can organise next year's event at no cost to the council. | :12:20. | :12:26.
There are fears that Scarborough could lose its direct trains to | :12:27. | :12:29.
Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool in a shake`up of rail services | :12:30. | :12:32.
It would mean everyone travdlling to or from the Yorkshire coast would | :12:33. | :12:38.
Businesses in the town are warning that if the plans go ahead | :12:39. | :12:45.
On Monday, the Chancellor spoke of his plans to create a northdrn | :12:46. | :12:58.
powerhouse with a high`speed rail line linking Leeds and Manchester. | :12:59. | :13:02.
For Scarborough, the holidax destination, with good links to the | :13:03. | :13:07.
north, and fears it could bd left inside the powerhouse exchanges go | :13:08. | :13:11.
ahead. There was not much ddtail in this speech, movement, no thmescale | :13:12. | :13:18.
and now costs. This document has a lot of information about thd future | :13:19. | :13:22.
shape of real services in Yorkshire. It is a consultation on franchises | :13:23. | :13:28.
up to 2016 and Scarborough does not come out well. One of the | :13:29. | :13:32.
suggestions as instead of h`ving Trans`Pennine route express trains | :13:33. | :13:35.
linking West Yorkshire and the north`west, Scarborough would become | :13:36. | :13:39.
part of Northern Rail and gdt a shuttle service to Jock. Ond | :13:40. | :13:43.
businessman says that would be a backward step. We are the h`ppening | :13:44. | :13:48.
town and I find it extraordhnary that they have decided to dhsconnect | :13:49. | :13:55.
us from the system. The reason for the change is which occasion, the | :13:56. | :13:58.
first stage of the northern powerhouse idea. The new eldctrical | :13:59. | :14:04.
wires will start in Manchester, the bull run through the pain is and | :14:05. | :14:08.
into Leeds and then used thd words into your. When they reach xacht, | :14:09. | :14:14.
the wire as well stop, meanhng diesel trains will have to run | :14:15. | :14:19.
between York and Scarborough. It seems this is as close as | :14:20. | :14:23.
Scarborough will get to electric chains `` brains. This woman says | :14:24. | :14:31.
that no one likes the plans for Diolch only service, they mtst make | :14:32. | :14:38.
their voice heard. We are a tourist destination, we will make stre we | :14:39. | :14:44.
are not left out. We must m`ke sure we have the proper infrastrtcture | :14:45. | :14:46.
and train services to serve the and train services to serve the | :14:47. | :14:49.
local community and economy. This is a franchise shambles. If thd | :14:50. | :14:54.
shake`up goes ahead it will happen in 18 months. Scarborough whll set | :14:55. | :15:00.
at the end of the 40 male rdal Lane, a long way away from any northern | :15:01. | :15:01.
powerhouse. It's 12 miles long | :15:02. | :15:06.
and it's heading for Yorkshhre. . We find out what it'll be | :15:07. | :15:10.
like watching the Tour de France Sport now, and it was back to work | :15:11. | :15:13.
today for Leeds United's pl`yers, a few days earlier than most | :15:14. | :15:24.
of our other Championship tdams And the new boss ` | :15:25. | :15:26.
or should I say "head coach" ` David Hockaday was there, | :15:27. | :15:29.
to see what they were made of. Hockaday will take the team to | :15:30. | :15:32.
The Dolomites for of their new signings are lhkely to | :15:33. | :15:34.
be from there. If you enter a competition, you want | :15:35. | :15:52.
to win it, I am not any difference to anyone else. We are lookhng for | :15:53. | :15:57.
people who can play in the British championship which throws lots of | :15:58. | :15:58.
things at you. The Bradford Bulls have dechded to | :15:59. | :16:03.
appeal to the High Court, over the 6`point deduction that s | :16:04. | :16:06.
thrown their whole Super Le`gue An independent panel has already | :16:07. | :16:09.
rejected the Bulls' attempt to overttrn | :16:10. | :16:12.
the six`point sanction, imposed As a result, Bradford currently sit | :16:13. | :16:14.
deep in the relegation zone, And at Wimbledon, | :16:15. | :16:19.
Sheffield's doubles specialhst Jonny Marray is up | :16:20. | :16:25.
and running again for anothdr year. This time he's partnered by the | :16:26. | :16:27.
young Aussie John`Patrick Slith And they've made a solid st`rt, | :16:28. | :16:31.
winning their first round m`tch today against Andreas Siljestrom | :16:32. | :16:33.
and Igor Zelenay in straight sets. We'll keep you posted | :16:34. | :16:37.
on their progress throughout Yorkshire may be hosting thd start | :16:38. | :16:39.
of the Tour de France but you if you want to experience the thrill | :16:40. | :16:49.
of track cycling, you have to go Until next month that is ` | :16:50. | :16:52.
because York is about to opdn It's an outdoor Olympic`sizdd track | :16:53. | :16:56.
based at the University of Xork And Sally Young was one | :16:57. | :17:02.
of the first to try it out today. The Velodrome is designed for speed, | :17:03. | :17:19.
a crucial height on the slopes of the bank is and build your speed up | :17:20. | :17:24.
on the way down. It is a thrilling ride and soon you can experhence it | :17:25. | :17:29.
right here in Yorkshire. Thhs track is so new I cannot go on thd banking | :17:30. | :17:35.
yet. F I am riding round on this flat bet, it is fantastic. H can | :17:36. | :17:40.
train and feel the sun on mx back and the wind in my face. Thd bank is | :17:41. | :17:46.
30 feet at its deepest point, making this Velodrome a good place to | :17:47. | :17:52.
learn. You can feel intimid`ted but that is healthy. You need your wits | :17:53. | :17:58.
about you as you are writing anyway. It is a lot less scary than riding | :17:59. | :18:06.
in Manchester. I will come `gain, it has been really good. We have got | :18:07. | :18:12.
the track and in`store Velodrome, Yorkshire is going places whth | :18:13. | :18:20.
cycling. It is hoped that t`lented riders will develop into future | :18:21. | :18:25.
champions. We have jitters `nd cultures, you have the structure | :18:26. | :18:29.
that you can work and develop the skills of young people. Hopdfully | :18:30. | :18:34.
give them the professionalism to go on to become Olympic champions. This | :18:35. | :18:41.
Velodrome opens to the publhc next month. Be warned, it can be | :18:42. | :18:45.
addictive! Now, that is perfect for Sally, she | :18:46. | :18:57.
is training to be part of tdam GB. That is one determined lady | :18:58. | :19:02.
Sticking with cycling, one of the biggest names at the Tour dd France, | :19:03. | :19:05.
Mark Cavendish, has pulled out of the British championships this | :19:06. | :19:08.
Cavendish, who was the BBC Sports Personality | :19:09. | :19:16.
favourites to win the first stage. Hopefully he'll be fighting fit by | :19:17. | :19:19.
then. Over the past few days we ve been explaining how the Tour works, | :19:20. | :19:22.
and tonight our correspondent Matt Slater finishes his three`p`rt guide | :19:23. | :19:24.
with a look at the circus that travels with the race. | :19:25. | :19:31.
