The headlines tonight... it. Now on BBC One we | :00:00. | :00:08.
The so-called Halloween ridd-out was the latest in a series | :00:09. | :00:11.
of incidents in Birmingham in recent months. | :00:12. | :00:13.

Things that go bang in the night - residents left shaken | :00:27. | :00:30.

It was a very loud bang. It shook the windows. | :00:33. | :00:40.
Ending a ten-month goal drotght - Wilfried Bony scores twice to help | :00:41. | :00:43.
Stoke to a much-needed win over Swansea. | :00:44. | :00:46.
Forget your toy train set for Christmas, how about owning | :00:47. | :00:48.
And a change of month brings a change of temperature and for some, | :00:49. | :00:56.
Hear all about it in the forecast later. | :00:57. | :01:07.
That's how police have described a gang of up to 200 bikers | :01:08. | :01:17.
who caused chaos on the strdets of Solihull and | :01:18. | :01:19.
Seven people have been arrested and ten motorbikes seized, | :01:20. | :01:22.
but the so-called Halloween ride-out was just the latest in a series | :01:23. | :01:25.
of incidents in the area in the last few months. | :01:26. | :01:28.
These are the 200 bikers police are describing as "a menace". | :01:29. | :01:36.
Riding scramblers, quad bikds and mopeds, the gang hijackdd | :01:37. | :01:38.
the road in Kings Norton just after 9pm last night. | :01:39. | :01:42.
The group wasn't just out for an evening ride. | :01:43. | :01:45.
A police van was attacked and there are reports fireworks | :01:46. | :01:53.
Hundreds, loads of them. I thought, oh, what is going on here? @bout | :01:54. | :02:07.
150, really loud, skidding `cross the road, doing wheelies. It was | :02:08. | :02:15.
mad. It is ridiculous. Why were they even doing it? Are they causing | :02:16. | :02:18.
danger to people on the roads and things like that? | :02:19. | :02:20.
Many of the riders had their faces covered as they sped along roads, | :02:21. | :02:23.
jumped red lights, weaved through traffic and "pulled | :02:24. | :02:25.
Officers say their actions were illegal and they're looking | :02:26. | :02:33.
These people do pose a thre`t to ordinary members of the public. I | :02:34. | :02:43.
have a lot of sympathy for lembers of the public going about their | :02:44. | :02:46.
normal business and then encountering this lot on thd roads. | :02:47. | :02:52.
Utterly disgraceful. We havd described them as a menace `nd that | :02:53. | :02:55.
is what they are, a menace to other road users. | :02:56. | :02:57.
In Leeds, similar scenes filmed last night. | :02:58. | :02:59.
All part of what's being called a Halloween ride-out, | :03:00. | :03:01.
and it seems to have been organised and choreographed | :03:02. | :03:03.
This was shot two weeks ago in Kings Norton. | :03:04. | :03:11.
It has been like this now on and off for about two months. They ride | :03:12. | :03:20.
round with no helmets on our number plates, no lights, sort is getting | :03:21. | :03:22.
out of hand. This event scared locals, | :03:23. | :03:25.
but at least one biker was hurt too, suffering chest injurids | :03:26. | :03:28.
after colliding with a car. Tom is at the scene | :03:29. | :03:33.
of those dramatic pictures A lot calmer now but it must | :03:34. | :03:36.
have been a frightening So what can police do | :03:37. | :03:41.
to stop it happening again? Well, seven arrests have already | :03:42. | :03:49.
been made since last night. Five of those were men. Two of them have | :03:50. | :03:55.
been described as youth malds by officers. They have also sehzed ten | :03:56. | :04:01.
bikes, three were reported stolen. They will also be doing what a lot | :04:02. | :04:05.
of us have been doing today and that is scouring social media to try and | :04:06. | :04:10.
identify who it was that drove through cottage and other p`rts of | :04:11. | :04:15.
Birmingham last night on bo`rd those bikes. | :04:16. | :04:17.
This has happened there before. How worried are local people? | :04:18. | :04:23.
You saw in the footage that only a couple of weeks ago, hikers go | :04:24. | :04:29.
through the area. -- bikers. People are worried and concerned bdcause | :04:30. | :04:32.
last night a fire engine cotld not get to a 999 call-out. Officers were | :04:33. | :04:41.
surrounded by 100 bikers who try to kick in the windows and smash wing | :04:42. | :04:46.
mirrors. This evening, people here are very worried but officers | :04:47. | :04:50.
themselves will have a bit of extra pointed self interest to sed they | :04:51. | :04:55.
can find those responsible. Tom, thank you. | :04:56. | :04:58.
You might associate things that go bump in the night with Halloween, | :04:59. | :05:01.
but people living near a Shropshire school had quite a fright l`st night | :05:02. | :05:04.
when the bomb squad had to blow up a bottle of chemicals | :05:05. | :05:07.
The Thomas Adams School in Wem has apologised for the loud explosion, | :05:08. | :05:11.
but insist they were only following official advice. | :05:12. | :05:13.
They say they didn't have thme to warn their neighbours because | :05:14. | :05:16.
It was the noise that got the Shropshire town of Wem talking. | :05:17. | :05:30.
For those living nearby, last night's explosion came | :05:31. | :05:32.
And they didn't expect it to make such a big bang! | :05:33. | :05:41.
I walked to the school to sde what it was about, | :05:42. | :05:43.
because everyone said it was a bomb that had gone off. | :05:44. | :05:46.
So I went to see what it was, but it wasn't. | :05:47. | :05:48.
The answer to that can be found at the Thomas Adams School. | :05:49. | :05:56.
Over half-term, they receivdd an e-mail warning them | :05:57. | :06:01.
about a chemical used by A-level students, which stated... | :06:02. | :06:21.
This chemical is an orange to red powder that if it becomes dry, | :06:22. | :06:34.
can become explosive on the friction turn. | :06:35. | :06:35.
So, with the container, if the lid was to be opened | :06:36. | :06:40.
The school checked and found it did have an old bottle of the chemical, | :06:41. | :06:48.
so they called the police, who called the bomb squad. | :06:49. | :06:52.
The bomb disposal team came from Tewkesbury. | :06:53. | :06:55.
They got the chemical and btried it about one foot in the ground. | :06:56. | :06:58.
And then, at six minutes to eight, they detonated the substancd. | :06:59. | :07:01.
And now this is all that relains from the Wem explosion. | :07:02. | :07:04.
Wem is a quiet market town and people aren't used | :07:05. | :07:06.
Certainly having a bomb disposal squad, as seen around the town, | :07:07. | :07:12.
probably sparked a little bit of interest. | :07:13. | :07:14.
But I think people have perhaps panicked slightly | :07:15. | :07:16.
With all the school's stock of the chemical disposed of, things | :07:17. | :07:20.
West Midlands Police have confirmed they attended two other inchdents to | :07:21. | :07:37.
dispose of old chemicals in the last few days at schools in | :07:38. | :07:40.
Worcestershire. Plans for a new multi-million pound | :07:41. | :07:43.
railway station in Wolverhalpton have been approved by the Chty | :07:44. | :07:45.
Council. It's all part of a ?120 million | :07:46. | :07:47.
interchange project which whll also include the Metro tram line | :07:48. | :07:50.
being extended to the station. Building work is expected | :07:51. | :07:52.
to start next year. A video has emerged which appears | :07:53. | :07:56.

who qualified for refuge here. Assaults on police officers | :11:56. | :11:58.
are on the increase. New figures show nearly 600 officers | :11:59. | :12:08.
from the West Midlands forcd were assaulted on duty in the first | :12:09. | :12:11.
nine months of this year. It's a growing trend, | :12:12. | :12:14.
with violent crime also on the rise. On the day the figures | :12:15. | :12:16.
were released, West Midlands Police announced it's introducing | :12:17. | :12:19.
new technology to help officers Our special correspondent, | :12:20. | :12:22.
Peter Wilson, has the details. Fireworks used like missiles, | :12:23. | :12:26.
launched at a police van last month. This year alone, nearly 600 officers | :12:27. | :12:36.
have been hurt in the line of duty. I only spoke to an individu`l this | :12:37. | :12:43.
morning who was assaulted a couple of days ago in Sandwell, | :12:44. | :12:49.
who received a fractured cheekbone as a result | :12:50. | :12:53.
of being hit in the face. That individual will be | :12:54. | :12:57.
off work never several And, ultimately, that is ond more | :12:58. | :12:59.
officer off the streets who should be out there protecting the public | :13:00. | :13:12.
of the West Midlands. Today at the new-look Lloyd House, | :13:13. | :13:18.
the West Midlands Police HQ, news about yet more | :13:19. | :13:21.
change at the force. New technology for the cops | :13:22. | :13:23.
of the future - body But how will that protect the public | :13:24. | :13:25.
and the police? They will have new mobile kht that | :13:26. | :13:29.
will enable them to deal with crime effectively without coming back | :13:30. | :13:32.
to the station so much. They have new batons which help them | :13:33. | :13:34.
to protect themselves from some of the threats | :13:35. | :13:36.
they face on a daily basis. Fundamentally, this | :13:37. | :13:39.
is about as modernising the way that we deliver policing | :13:40. | :13:41.
so that we can be as The police have already | :13:42. | :13:43.
undergone massive change. 3000 police officers and st`ff | :13:44. | :13:46.
have lost their jobs. Last year, 17 police station | :13:47. | :13:53.
front offices were closed And this one here in | :13:54. | :13:56.
Steelhouse Lane is the only police station in the whole | :13:57. | :14:00.
of the West Midlands open 24/7. We've already seen the forcd | :14:01. | :14:09.
stretched this week with big Last year, the Crime Commissioner | :14:10. | :14:11.
warned of a funding crisis We are certainly facing problems | :14:12. | :14:15.
with our budget and I have said quite clearly to the Chancellor | :14:16. | :14:21.
that there should be no further cuts We have taken the biggest hht of any | :14:22. | :14:24.
force in the whole country. What we're looking at today | :14:25. | :14:31.
is partly our response to that, Technology can make a difference | :14:32. | :14:34.
and drive real change, but without police numbers, | :14:35. | :14:38.
the safety of officers and the public will continud to be | :14:39. | :14:40.
a cause for concern. The Government's come under further | :14:41. | :15:17.
pressure to give financial support to the families of the victhms | :15:18. | :15:19.
of the Birmingham pub bombings. Fresh inquests are due to bd held | :15:20. | :15:22.
into the 21 victims of the `ttack in 1974 - relatives want | :15:23. | :15:25.
the same sort of funding provided for families | :15:26. | :15:28.
for the Hillsborough inquests. Labour's Justice spokesman | :15:29. | :15:29.
Richard Burgon raised the issue in the Commons earlier which drew | :15:30. | :15:31.
this response from I made it clear that this ddbate | :15:32. | :15:37.
that the Home Office and justice officer working on that, looking at | :15:38. | :15:39.
the precedence of what happdned in Hillsborough and looking at all the | :15:40. | :15:42.
matters which have been discussed in that debate. | :15:43. | :15:42.

against his former club. Wayne Routledge heading | :19:43. | :19:45.
an equaliser six minutes later. But the second half | :19:46. | :19:50.
was dominated by Stoke. Starting with a trick and a treat | :19:51. | :19:52.
from Ramadan Sobhi. The Egyptian's shot was turned | :19:53. | :19:56.
into his own net by the Swansea Goal number three was | :19:57. | :19:59.
entirely Stoke's making. Joe Allen - another former Swan - | :20:00. | :20:10.
was the provider, Bony the scorer The amount of times an all boy comes | :20:11. | :20:21.
back and haunts his previous club... It was always likely to happen. I | :20:22. | :20:25.
think it was in the stars tonight. And we're grateful. Wilfried has | :20:26. | :20:30.
been doing really well for ts. He needed the goal, clearly, and his | :20:31. | :20:32.
overall performance was good. So as the nights close in, | :20:33. | :20:39.
Stoke City climb up. This win lifted the Potters five | :20:40. | :20:41.
places to 12th in Their slow start to the season | :20:42. | :20:44.
is now a distant nightmare. If you've ever fancied owning a part | :20:45. | :20:47.
of Midlands history, Shares in the Severn Valley Railway | :20:48. | :20:50.
are again up for grabs. It's to help fund improvements | :20:51. | :20:53.
to the line in the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth, where Rebecc` Wood | :20:54. | :20:56.
is this evening. Well, it is very popular here, that | :20:57. | :21:09.
is for certain. It is quiet at the moment and very chilly. There are no | :21:10. | :21:14.
trains running but the pub hs quite busy at the moment. Walking along | :21:15. | :21:18.
platform one of the station is like taking a step back to the 1840s | :21:19. | :21:22.
There are some things here that need a little bit of TLC and mondy. The | :21:23. | :21:30.
team here hope to raise that through selling as a little slice of Severn | :21:31. | :21:32.
Valley history. It is one of the region's top | :21:33. | :21:34.
tourist attractions, welcoming around | :21:35. | :21:40.
250,000 people a year. But it is not cheap to run | :21:41. | :21:42.
and the team at Severn Valldy If you purchase shares in the share | :21:43. | :21:45.
offer and become a shareholder, you are buying a part of thd history | :21:46. | :21:52.
and heritage of the railway and you will see that, | :21:53. | :21:58.
specifically for this share offer, the money raised through | :21:59. | :22:04.
the purchase will be spent `lmost This is not the first time | :22:05. | :22:06.
Severn Valley Railway have offered people the opportunity to bty shares | :22:07. | :22:10.
in the organisation. But this time, all of the money | :22:11. | :22:14.
is going to Bridgnorth We're going to build a new cafe | :22:15. | :22:19.
and toilet facility on platform one and it will be done in completely | :22:20. | :22:25.
authentic Great Western style. Then the main building itself, | :22:26. | :22:29.
the station building, which is a grade two listed | :22:30. | :22:31.
building, is going to be conserved and restored | :22:32. | :22:38.
to its Victorian splendour. Thousands lined the platforls | :22:39. | :22:39.
in September as the Flying Scotsman rolled into town on a | :22:40. | :22:45.
tour of the country. With events like that and a lot | :22:46. | :22:47.
of steam engines growing, the team are convinced | :22:48. | :22:50.
they are having better facilities For many years, we wanted to provide | :22:51. | :22:52.
a new refreshment room up to modern standards and we struggled | :22:53. | :23:04.
to firstly get planning for it and then we are now having | :23:05. | :23:08.
to fund it. But it is a careful balance | :23:09. | :23:11.
between old and new and protecting What we designed is a buildhng | :23:12. | :23:14.
to give more modern facilithes to the passengers that | :23:15. | :23:18.
are using the station, using traditional Great Western R`ilway | :23:19. | :23:22.
design techniques of around 190 . With ?2.5 million worth | :23:23. | :23:26.
of shares up for sale, there are plenty of opportunities | :23:27. | :23:31.
to own a slice of history and protect Bridgnorth | :23:32. | :23:33.
station for the future. Welcome to the pub, one of the most | :23:34. | :23:47.
popular spots on the station. I don't blame them because it is | :23:48. | :23:50.
rather chilly out there. Thhs is one part of the station that will | :23:51. | :23:55.
benefit from the possible ?2.59 Nick is the general manager of the | :23:56. | :24:00.
Severn Valley Railway. Wider use shares as a way to raise money for | :24:01. | :24:05.
this organisation? -- of thd possible ?2.5 million. | :24:06. | :24:10.
It is a way to raise funds for specific projects. The really | :24:11. | :24:14.
benefits because the funds `re ring-fenced for this one project. | :24:15. | :24:18.
And the individual that is laking the share offer purchasers buying | :24:19. | :24:21.
into the history and heritage of this wonderful Railway. It hs | :24:22. | :24:26.
something which is really close to a lot of people's hearts. We saw the | :24:27. | :24:29.
crowds of people coming to see the Flying Scotsman. Do you expdct the | :24:30. | :24:35.
shares to fly? I hope so. Wd have had a lot of applications already | :24:36. | :24:39.
and a lot of interest prior to the launch today. Over 1000 people who | :24:40. | :24:46.
are not shareholders at the moment have expressed interest in our share | :24:47. | :24:52.
offer. And I think, regionally and nationally, the railway is held in | :24:53. | :24:56.
high regard as a place to love and cherish. Very quickly, what does | :24:57. | :25:02.
being a shareholder of the Severn Valley Railway get you? The travel? | :25:03. | :25:08.
There are benefits. If you have 100 shares or more, you get levdls of | :25:09. | :25:12.
travel benefit through the xear which you will get you after year, | :25:13. | :25:16.
as long as you hold the shares. Fantastic. You never know, xou might | :25:17. | :25:21.
also be able to comment herd and get a pint! You never know. | :25:22. | :25:25.
A bit of a grey start to November - let's see if Shefali can brhng us | :25:26. | :25:30.
Yes, sunny days and frosty nights sums it up for this week, apart from | :25:31. | :25:38.
the odd exception. A change in the month has brought a change hn | :25:39. | :25:42.

down and lead to temperaturds plunging before this next sxstem | :26:24. | :26:26.
moves in from the West. This will be judging the course of Thursday. For | :26:27. | :26:30.
this evening and overnight, now that it is dark and the front is out of | :26:31. | :26:34.
the way, the skies clearing quickly. Temperatures falling very r`pidly. | :26:35. | :26:39.
In the countryside, they cotld fall to just below freezing. In towns and | :26:40. | :26:44.
cities, the coldest spot in Southwest Herefordshire and | :26:45. | :26:48.
Worcestershire with lows of two Celsius. We will get a bit of Mr | :26:49. | :26:51.
Ness but not follow that we saw last night. That takes us into the | :26:52. | :26:55.
morning tomorrow. It is a mhsty start to the day but largelx clear. | :26:56. | :27:00.

tonight, we will see a Prost. Quite widespread. That will take ts into | :27:28. | :27:31.
the start of Thursday. Sunnx start to frosty but as I said, thd frontal | :27:32. | :27:35.
system moving in from the Wdst will bring in rain through Thursday, | :27:36. | :27:37.
showers on Friday. Thank you. Love the pictures from | :27:38. | :27:43.
the Weather Watchers. That hs all from me. I will | :27:44. | :27:51.
He's a scientist, brilliant apparently. | :27:52. | :27:52.
But you may be bringing people over here who did things during the war. | :27:53. | :28:01.
I will not work for you. I will not work for the British Government | :28:02. | :28:06.
Let us not let the past haunt all of our actions. | :28:07. | :28:10.
You've got to do something! It's only you that can! | :28:11. | :28:14. |
