Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. - so it's goodbye from me -

:00:00.:00:00.

The headlines tonight: The new Labour MP for

:00:00.:00:00.

Stoke-on-Trent Central, Gareth Snell, promises

:00:07.:00:09.

to deliver on Brexit, education and homes.

:00:10.:00:16.

Whatever be doing now as a member of parliament is going around the

:00:17.:00:21.

country and selling Stoke-on-Trent is a wonderful place that it it.

:00:22.:00:24.

But what now for Ukip as they fail in their bid to turn Stoke Central

:00:25.:00:28.

Tributes paid to Tahnie Martin, the 29-year-old died

:00:29.:00:34.

after being hit by falling debris, during storm force

:00:35.:00:39.

If's terrible. She's 29, she has not seen the world or dumb things. You

:00:40.:00:50.

could cry, couldn't you? -- or done things.

:00:51.:00:52.

Tricky times for our Championship clubs, with all four West Midlands

:00:53.:00:55.

The delicate art of embroidery, a world-renowned Warwickshire

:00:56.:00:58.

seamstress encouraging a new generation.

:00:59.:01:01.

And things have been very different today with the weather,

:01:02.:01:03.

but it's a return to wet and windy conditions

:01:04.:01:06.

Standing up for Stoke-on Trent, that's the promise from the City's

:01:07.:01:25.

newest MP, Gareth Snell, who held the Labour seat

:01:26.:01:28.

of Stoke-on-Trent Central with just over 7,800 votes.

:01:29.:01:31.

But the party's majority was cut by almost half, to 2,620 votes.

:01:32.:01:37.

Ukip's leader Paul Nuttall came second with 5,233 votes,

:01:38.:01:41.

just 79 ahead of Conservative candidate Jack Brereton.

:01:42.:01:54.

It was a major blow to Ukip, who hoped the pro-Brexit vote

:01:55.:01:57.

would result in victory and the party's second MP.

:01:58.:01:59.

Our Staffordshire reporter Sian Grzsysck has been getting reaction.

:02:00.:02:01.

Have report contains flashing images.

:02:02.:02:03.

BBC Radio Stoke, if you're waking up, Gareth Snell has won.

:02:04.:02:07.

A new day and a new MP for Stoke central.

:02:08.:02:10.

It was business as usual for most in the city centre,

:02:11.:02:14.

but there was plenty to digest for the winners and losers

:02:15.:02:16.

of what proved to be a tough political fight.

:02:17.:02:19.

And Last night the new Labour MP admitted it hadn't been

:02:20.:02:22.

Feeling very happy about the fact that the Labour Party has been able

:02:23.:02:33.

to hold this seat. It was a tough election, but ultimately the people

:02:34.:02:38.

of Stoke, Stoke-on-Trent made their voice heard and I'm very glad to be

:02:39.:02:44.

going to Parliament to represent them.

:02:45.:02:45.

All Ukip's leader could do was to try and appear positive

:02:46.:02:47.

in the midst of what was clearly a painful failure.

:02:48.:02:50.

We have cut their majority in half. We have unified the party like never

:02:51.:02:56.

before. We will go forward now and we will look. Ukip's time will come.

:02:57.:03:05.

This will happen. This should been a very easy win for Labour. They've

:03:06.:03:09.

helped this seat since it was created back in 1950. A challenging

:03:10.:03:14.

win, but a disastrous results for these guys, Ukip, they thought they

:03:15.:03:17.

would be celebrating here today. Today they are facing tough

:03:18.:03:21.

questions. If they can't win here in appropriate city, where can they

:03:22.:03:24.

win? The fact that is Paul Nuttall thought he could get in and then has

:03:25.:03:28.

the cheek to say it is only 72nd market list, how disrespectful of

:03:29.:03:35.

the local people can you be? -- on our hit list. I'm disappointed. I

:03:36.:03:40.

wanted Ukip in. I wanted change. And so is been a strong Labour seat and

:03:41.:03:48.

his policies like I said are not what I voted for.

:03:49.:03:50.

Stoke saw a lot of the labour leader in the run up to this by-election

:03:51.:03:53.

and today he returned, clearly relieved to have hung

:03:54.:03:56.

on here, after a bruising defeat in the other by-election

:03:57.:03:58.

I tell you what happened yesterday, people came out, worked, knocked on

:03:59.:04:05.

doors. They delivered a message. It is a message about the economy. It

:04:06.:04:09.

is the message about gods. It is a message -- jobs. It is a message

:04:10.:04:11.

about this country. Of course, many people today

:04:12.:04:13.

were just focussed on enjoying the rest of half term with the kids,

:04:14.:04:15.

but the by election was still on their minds

:04:16.:04:18.

at stoke's ski centre. It would have been a shock had they

:04:19.:04:26.

not one. What they need to do now is work on pulling everyone together.

:04:27.:04:30.

Need to do some things to get the majority back up, I think. Get some

:04:31.:04:31.

trust back on the people. And, like the whole campaign,

:04:32.:04:35.

doing that might continue to be I spoke to Stoke Central's new MP,

:04:36.:04:37.

Gareth Snell, a little earlier. I asked him what his priorities

:04:38.:04:42.

are for his constituents. As I said during the election

:04:43.:04:48.

campaign, my priorities will be to make sure that we get

:04:49.:04:51.

the Brexit deal. For Stone-onTrent that we

:04:52.:05:04.

need and we deserve, such as education,

:05:05.:05:06.

homes, we have got lots of Brownfield sites

:05:07.:05:09.

in Stoke-on-Trent that are ripe

:05:10.:05:10.

for development, but also challenging the Government to make

:05:11.:05:12.

sure we get A voter turnout of just

:05:13.:05:13.

a little over 36%, why do you think the voters

:05:14.:05:17.

were so apathetic? I think the storm Doris had

:05:18.:05:20.

a little bit to do with But this has historically

:05:21.:05:22.

had a low turnout and that is not something that I am

:05:23.:05:30.

content to let lie now. One of the issues that

:05:31.:05:32.

I will be taking forward over the next three

:05:33.:05:35.

years is looking at how we can really engage

:05:36.:05:37.

with civil society, how

:05:38.:05:38.

we can give a clear, Labour Party which means in 2020

:05:39.:05:40.

at the general election people are actually coming out

:05:41.:05:44.

to support the Labour Party. How are you going to do that

:05:45.:05:46.

because you got quite a big bit What we showed in this campaign

:05:47.:05:53.

is that when the Labour Party campaigns on issues that matters

:05:54.:05:59.

to local people, some of which are outside our comfort

:06:00.:06:01.

zone, we can resonate. this process over the next three

:06:02.:06:03.

years, we can increase the Labour share of the vote, but also we can

:06:04.:06:08.

increase turnout overall. What about that

:06:09.:06:15.

share of the vote? Is it that Labour won

:06:16.:06:18.

or that Ukip lost? I think the fact that I'll

:06:19.:06:25.

be going to London on Monday to represent Stoke-on-Trent

:06:26.:06:28.

in Parliament is a clear sign that Ukip through the kitchen sink

:06:29.:06:31.

at this election, they threw money, they had a flash, slick

:06:32.:06:36.

campaign, they had national leaders up and down the country

:06:37.:06:38.

campaigning for them here in Stoke-on-Trent

:06:39.:06:40.

and they only increased their vote here

:06:41.:06:41.

in Stoke-on-Trent by just over 2%. For me, what that shows is

:06:42.:06:44.

that the politics that Ukip offer to You spent some time

:06:45.:06:47.

with Jeremy Corbyn this afternoon Does he have your 100%

:06:48.:06:50.

backing as Labour leader? Jeremy is the leader of the party

:06:51.:06:54.

and I will be working as hard as I can now to make sure we win

:06:55.:06:58.

the general election in 2020 Does he have your 100%

:06:59.:07:01.

backing as Labour leader? I'm not going to put percentages on,

:07:02.:07:05.

but Jeremy is the leader. He has my support and I want to see

:07:06.:07:08.

him as Prime Minister in 2020 He is somebody that you have

:07:09.:07:11.

previously described Previously, I was making comment

:07:12.:07:14.

on the fact that the Labour Party was in danger of eating itself alive

:07:15.:07:18.

during the leadership election. Jeremy was elected with a clear

:07:19.:07:21.

mandate by the people And as I said, he came

:07:22.:07:28.

and campaigned for me yesterday in Stoke-on-Trent and now

:07:29.:07:32.

it is my job to campaign for Jeremy to be

:07:33.:07:36.

prime ministers the next general election.

:07:37.:07:37.

Our Political Editor Patrick Burns is in Stoke for us now.

:07:38.:07:40.

Patrick Gareth Snell was evasive about giving his full backing

:07:41.:07:42.

in Copeland by election, what does this say about the state

:07:43.:07:48.

Very interesting, those comments that you drew from him there. Yes

:07:49.:07:59.

this result here in Stoke Central was much better for Labour than that

:08:00.:08:02.

one up there in Copeland, but you could put them both together and

:08:03.:08:07.

they have one thing in common. After seven years of Tory led Government

:08:08.:08:10.

in which Labour preserve the relentless focus of... The

:08:11.:08:19.

Conservative's evidence is actually strengthening rather than weakening.

:08:20.:08:23.

I can tell you that the disquiet over the Jeremy Corbyn leadership is

:08:24.:08:27.

not just amongst the usual suspects on the so-called moderate Labour

:08:28.:08:31.

benches who triggered that leadership challenge last summer, it

:08:32.:08:34.

extends to those on the left who would be his natural sympathisers.

:08:35.:08:38.

They are in a very sad mood at the moment. You will have seen a few by

:08:39.:08:45.

elections. Have you seen so much attention on the party who came

:08:46.:08:49.

second? How much of a problem is this for Ukip? Remarkable. If they

:08:50.:08:54.

can't win here, Brexit Central, where can they win? Now they are

:08:55.:09:01.

saying it was only 72nd on their list. It is very serious and two by

:09:02.:09:05.

the recriminations begin. The MEP is saying that Paul Nuttall's advisors

:09:06.:09:11.

behind this campaign should be sacked. Labour concentrated their

:09:12.:09:14.

campaign on the health service. Do you think that Brexit is beginning

:09:15.:09:20.

to fade away as a major political issue in Stoke? On the contrary. If

:09:21.:09:24.

you can buy me Tory and Ukip votes, you will get 10,500, which is way

:09:25.:09:31.

more than Labour got. I think this is another worry for Ukip.

:09:32.:09:34.

Conservatives are saying that we other party a project now, drawing

:09:35.:09:42.

further support for the Conservatives.

:09:43.:09:44.

And Patrick will have more on the election

:09:45.:09:46.

result on Sunday Politics, at the usual time of

:09:47.:09:48.

The woman who was killed by falling debris in storm force winds

:09:49.:09:58.

in Wolverhampton yesterday, has been named as Tahnie Martin.

:09:59.:10:00.

The 29-year-old was struck on the head in the City Centre.

:10:01.:10:03.

Staff at Wolverhampton University, where she worked, described her

:10:04.:10:05.

as irrepressibly optimistic, kind and full of ideas.

:10:06.:10:07.

At the spot where she collapsed, passers by genuinely shocked,

:10:08.:10:18.

bewildered by the death so sudden and violent at a moment

:10:19.:10:21.

so simple and commonplace, walking along a street with friends.

:10:22.:10:26.

It is a shame for her and her family.

:10:27.:10:32.

Just looking at her face, you could cry, couldn't you?

:10:33.:10:38.

There is a lot of community spirit and more the Hampton and she is

:10:39.:10:42.

You can see by all the flowers there.

:10:43.:10:47.

29-year-old Tahnie Lee Martin from Stafford was killed instantly,

:10:48.:10:49.

struck on the head by a wooden panel whipped from a building

:10:50.:10:52.

Tahnie was on with two colleagues from the university

:10:53.:10:56.

of Wolverhampton where she worked, they were treated in hospital

:10:57.:10:59.

In Smethwick destruction but relief no-one was hurt when a poplar tree

:11:00.:11:22.

80-feet tall crashed into the roof of a leisure centre.

:11:23.:11:24.

Six people using the gym at the time were at the other end of the room.

:11:25.:11:29.

It is almost certain we're going to have to crane

:11:30.:11:37.

that off and it'll take some time to sort that out.

:11:38.:11:39.

We also had some trees come down in the borough yesterday alone,

:11:40.:11:42.

so we will need to prioritise the ones that we need to sort first.

:11:43.:11:46.

Here is another of those downed trees.

:11:47.:11:47.

This time on top of a daycare centre.

:11:48.:11:49.

It was half term, but there were four children inside.

:11:50.:11:52.

In Birmingham's jewellery quarter another casualty of Doris,

:11:53.:11:56.

the top of this Victorian building caught on CCTV crashing

:11:57.:11:59.

It was halfway through either repair or

:12:00.:12:07.

refurbishment, but to see that the winds have taken it, I'm

:12:08.:12:10.

A bit of history just lost to the wind.

:12:11.:12:15.

In Wolverhampton, the investigation into Tahnie Martin's

:12:16.:12:17.

The police, the council and health and safety

:12:18.:12:20.

officials working together to establish who owns

:12:21.:12:22.

Storm Doris continued to cause problems for commuters today,

:12:23.:12:32.

as Birmingham's cross city line was suspended all day.

:12:33.:12:35.

It meant replacement bus services for many,

:12:36.:12:36.

Bob Hockenhull reports on the impact.

:12:37.:12:45.

Battling to land at Birmingham Airport at the height of the storm.

:12:46.:12:48.

80-mile-per hour winds testing the nerves of pilot and passengers.

:12:49.:12:51.

Once the winds subsided, it was trains not planes

:12:52.:12:54.

still suffering in the aftermath of Storm Doris.

:12:55.:12:59.

The Redditch to Lichfield line through Birmingham completely

:13:00.:13:01.

shut for a second day, engineers still carrying out repairs

:13:02.:13:04.

at multiple locations along the track.

:13:05.:13:12.

We've got 14 trapped trains on the line.

:13:13.:13:14.

Network Rail have to get out and repair

:13:15.:13:17.

Network Rail have to get out and repair the overhead lines

:13:18.:13:19.

We need to get the trains out of the way and then they

:13:20.:13:24.

need to go back again to assess the rest of the damage, make those

:13:25.:13:27.

One of those stranded trains still stuck in Selly Oak

:13:28.:13:30.

Unsuspecting passengers were still turning up to find any

:13:31.:13:33.

hopes of travelling along the line dashed.

:13:34.:13:37.

I'm trying to get to Durham to visit my sister and obviously

:13:38.:13:43.

there are no trains here, so I will have to get an Uber

:13:44.:13:46.

as opposed to ?1.60 which usually it would be to New Street.

:13:47.:13:50.

I checked this morning, it had no problems.

:13:51.:13:54.

Well there is a train parked on the platform.

:13:55.:14:06.

In the past half-hour, it has been announced that they have finished

:14:07.:14:19.

work sooner than expected. It is now open.

:14:20.:14:20.

But one group of children had a narrow escape after the roof

:14:21.:14:23.

of the clubhouse at Knowle FC was ripped off,

:14:24.:14:25.

Luckily no one was hurt, but it's left the club

:14:26.:14:28.

Nicola Beckford is there this evening, Nicola,

:14:29.:14:31.

It was terrifying. I spoke to some of the young people who were here

:14:32.:14:36.

yesterday. About 11 o'clock and 35 of them were inside the clubhouse.

:14:37.:14:39.

You can see it behind me. Some are outside putting on their football

:14:40.:14:45.

boots. Huge gust of wind ripped the roof. Ali is but Albee. This is what

:14:46.:14:50.

he told me. Was like talking to my friend and it was like, what is

:14:51.:14:54.

happening? I don't know what is happening! It is the end of the

:14:55.:14:56.

world expect we are doomed expect! happening! It is the end of the

:14:57.:15:09.

world expect we are doomed You're from the club, tummy more about what

:15:10.:15:12.

happened? I got a call round about 11 o'clock and write it was in a

:15:13.:15:17.

devastation. There were children, some sobbing, somewhat excitable.

:15:18.:15:25.

They were all very well looked after by the coaches who were here. The

:15:26.:15:29.

code should actually had to bring the children out, escort them out of

:15:30.:15:36.

the building here. Without those, Ronnie, Kerry and Nicole, there

:15:37.:15:41.

could well have been a terrible tragedy here. They did to refit job.

:15:42.:15:46.

They told me earlier that they have been practising for this kind of

:15:47.:15:51.

event. -- terrific event. I have heard that as well. The way the roof

:15:52.:15:58.

came off, it is gone off at the back. It disturbs the pitch over

:15:59.:16:07.

there. What is the future for you? We're hoping to get the roof

:16:08.:16:10.

replaced, but we don't know what is going to happen. We have very

:16:11.:16:14.

limited resources here and we just cannot at the moment say what is

:16:15.:16:18.

going to happen. I will leave it there thank you for talking to us.

:16:19.:16:21.

At least the children are safe. There will not be any matches played

:16:22.:16:25.

here, they are hoping to get back to normal as soon as boss.

:16:26.:16:31.

We had so many pictures and reports from viewers yesterday about damage

:16:32.:16:34.

caused by storm Doris, thank you for those.

:16:35.:16:36.

Rebecca was out in the thick of things, and is here now.

:16:37.:16:39.

What were the strongest recorded gusts?

:16:40.:16:40.

Yes, Mary this was a reading that I took up on the

:16:41.:16:43.

Staffordshire Moorlands, gusts of 77.7 miles per hour.

:16:44.:16:45.

Obviously, I'm not an official weather station.

:16:46.:16:48.

So these are the official readings taken yesterday,

:16:49.:16:51.

the top gust at Leek measured at 71mph, strong enough

:16:52.:16:54.

Calmer today, I'll be back with a forecast later.

:16:55.:17:07.

A woman has died after two bungalows caught fire in Shropshire.

:17:08.:17:10.

The alarm was raised at 5.30 this morning.

:17:11.:17:12.

The emergency services were sent to the development

:17:13.:17:14.

Two people have been treated for breathing in smoke,

:17:15.:17:17.

firefighters are searching the building.

:17:18.:17:18.

A number of animals are thought to have died when a Staffordshire

:17:19.:17:21.

The front window has been blown out of the home

:17:22.:17:24.

Local rivalry won't be the only thing at stake

:17:25.:17:43.

when the players of Wolves and Birmingham City run out

:17:44.:17:45.

Both teams are still in danger of dropping out

:17:46.:17:49.

They're joined in that relegation battle

:17:50.:17:51.

Fair to say, it's not been a great season so far

:17:52.:17:55.

Steve Bruce got off to a flying start when he took over

:17:56.:18:00.

at Aston Villa in October but after 16 weeks the emotions

:18:01.:18:03.

Frustrated, disappointed. I am determined to turn it round. We only

:18:04.:18:08.

do that by a few results and then quietly going about the rebuilding

:18:09.:18:11.

job that obviously the team needs. The lower half of the

:18:12.:18:12.

Championship table makes All four West Midlands sides

:18:13.:18:14.

are in the bottom ten and looking Gianfranco Zola is certainly under

:18:15.:18:18.

pressure at Birmingham City. He's won just once in his first 14

:18:19.:18:23.

games in charge but has been reassured again this week

:18:24.:18:27.

by the owners. We are working together. Not going

:18:28.:18:35.

on direction and another. I think the way that the club assessed the

:18:36.:18:42.

situation shows that there is still unity between us.

:18:43.:18:44.

Zola's next test comes at Wolves this evening.

:18:45.:18:45.

Their start to 2017 has been very lopsided with two FA Cup wins

:18:46.:18:49.

against Premier League opponents stacking up against a run of three

:18:50.:18:51.

There are still a third of the season to go. 45 points. It is

:18:52.:19:02.

incredible how many games still left and how many games to play for. I

:19:03.:19:07.

will not give the play-off up. We will go for it.

:19:08.:19:08.

Burton Albion may be the lowest ranked of our clubs but in many ways

:19:09.:19:11.

Expected to struggle if they beat Blackburn this evening

:19:12.:19:14.

they will be nine points clear of their relegation rivals.

:19:15.:19:18.

And there's full match build up and commentary on Wolves

:19:19.:19:22.

against Birmingham City on BBC West Midlands from 19:00 tonight.

:19:23.:19:28.

against Birmingham City on BBC WM from 19:00 tonight.

:19:29.:19:30.

I'll have the result and any goals for you in

:19:31.:19:32.

The Worcester Warriors centre Ben Te'o will make his full England

:19:33.:19:36.

debut in Sunday's Six-Nations game against Italy.

:19:37.:19:38.

He'll be joined by four players from Wasps, including James Haskell.

:19:39.:19:40.

Three weeks ago, Te'o came off the bench to score a late try

:19:41.:19:44.

at Twickenham to help England beat France by 19 points to 16.

:19:45.:19:48.

50-years-ago tomorrow, a young footballer from Birmingham

:19:49.:19:51.

went off to play in the FA Amateur Cup quarterfinal.

:19:52.:19:54.

It should have been the biggest game of his life,

:19:55.:19:57.

Tony Allden had only been married five months.

:19:58.:20:02.

He was 23 years old, when he was killed by lightning

:20:03.:20:05.

The chances of it happening must be millions to one.

:20:06.:20:16.

50 years on, even now he's still got painful memories.

:20:17.:20:19.

Roy Taylor and his elder brother Eric are sharing an emotional return

:20:20.:20:22.

to their old football club, Highgate United.

:20:23.:20:27.

We didn't have floodlights in those days.

:20:28.:20:31.

And even the stand is a big improvement.

:20:32.:20:35.

It was February 25th 1967 and Highgate were playing Enfield

:20:36.:20:38.

in the quarterfinals of the FA Amateur Cup.

:20:39.:20:41.

A record crowd of more than 3,000 had come to watch.

:20:42.:20:46.

But they had no idea of the tragedy that was about to unfold.

:20:47.:20:50.

As the game progressed, the rain became

:20:51.:20:53.

heavier and heavier and it became eerily dark.

:20:54.:21:00.

The nation settled down to watch the rugby.

:21:01.:21:03.

This afternoon at Twickenham, the French will be

:21:04.:21:05.

seeking what could be only their third victory in over 60

:21:06.:21:08.

Watching TV back home in Kings Heath Birmingham, Roy and

:21:09.:21:14.

Eric's father Harry Taylor, first learnt of the tragic news.

:21:15.:21:22.

A very quick line, an amateur cup game is being

:21:23.:21:25.

played up in Birmingham between Highgate United and Enfield.

:21:26.:21:32.

Lightning up there has stopped the match.

:21:33.:21:34.

Both his sons were taken to hospital and treated for shock.

:21:35.:21:38.

24 hours later, it was announced that their

:21:39.:21:40.

Highgate United team-mate, Tony Allden, had passed away.

:21:41.:21:42.

There was a flash and a lot of the players went

:21:43.:21:44.

One lightning strike and that was it.

:21:45.:21:49.

Ken Barnett will never forget the horror of that fateful

:21:50.:21:53.

He has still got fond memories of playing football

:21:54.:21:58.

A gentle giant of a man who had married his wife, Sue,

:21:59.:22:07.

He was a good mate of mine and he didn't deserve to have his

:22:08.:22:16.

News of the tragedy touched the hearts of the nation and

:22:17.:22:22.

two weeks later, a huge crowd of nearly 30,000 turned out to watch

:22:23.:22:25.

The proceeds went to help Tony's family, but the Highgate players

:22:26.:22:29.

were overwhelmed by the occasion and lost 6-0.

:22:30.:22:32.

And 23 years of age, it was an absolute tragedy.

:22:33.:22:40.

So at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon before their Midlands Premier League

:22:41.:22:47.

game with Long Eaton, the Highgate United stand will be

:22:48.:22:50.

They will unveil a plaque and remember the talented

:22:51.:22:57.

23-year-old who was killed by lightning exactly 50 years ago.

:22:58.:23:03.

And Highgate United say anyone's welcome to attend the unveiling

:23:04.:23:06.

of the renamed Tony Allden Stand tomorrow at 14:00.

:23:07.:23:13.

The name Nicola Jarvis might not be familiar to you,

:23:14.:23:16.

Her beautiful embroidery designs and perfect stitching are known

:23:17.:23:20.

She helped with the exquisite lace detail on Kate

:23:21.:23:25.

The centuries old craft is enjoying something of a revival

:23:26.:23:31.

with the younger generation and Nicola's work has become

:23:32.:23:33.

Sarah Bishop has been to meet her at home in Leamington Spa.

:23:34.:23:37.

You become completely involved with the thread

:23:38.:23:39.

just moving up and down the

:23:40.:23:40.

fabric in a really lovely, rhythmic way.

:23:41.:23:42.

It takes you into a place where you can

:23:43.:23:44.

start to think about things, your life.

:23:45.:23:46.

It's the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern times.

:23:47.:23:48.

And Nicola Jarvis is so accomplished in the craft of embroidery,

:23:49.:23:51.

she helped with the most famous dress of the decade.

:23:52.:23:57.

The lace on Kate Middleton's wedding gown was the result of hours of work

:23:58.:24:08.

by a team from the Royal School of Needlecraft where Nicola teaches.

:24:09.:24:10.

Right up until the last minute, no one knew for sure it was for

:24:11.:24:14.

I was watching the ceremony on TV because of course the whole

:24:15.:24:18.

nation was gripped by this fabulous event.

:24:19.:24:20.

And then it was announced, there was on my little settee with

:24:21.:24:27.

And then when it was announced that we had

:24:28.:24:30.

been involved and it actually was the dress I'd worked on, I just

:24:31.:24:33.

It's been giving common garden birds something of a royal makeover that's

:24:34.:24:42.

Her feathered friends with posh plummage came about by chance.

:24:43.:24:48.

I was working on a William Morris exhibition and I

:24:49.:24:51.

thought, well, it would be very appropriate to use some of his

:24:52.:24:54.

And so I started to Carlos William Morris patterns onto the birds.

:24:55.:25:00.

The high-street giant John Lewis loved the William Morris

:25:01.:25:09.

inspired birds so much, they now stock Nicola's designs

:25:10.:25:11.

Not that everyone can stitch to Nicola's exacting standards,

:25:12.:25:15.

it's taken 25 years for her to get this good.

:25:16.:25:18.

In her mid twenties she was one of the royal school's

:25:19.:25:20.

The key to it all, she says, practice and rhythm.

:25:21.:25:29.

To lose yourself in the intricacies of an ancient art.

:25:30.:25:41.

After the storm force winds, some calm and even sunshine.

:25:42.:25:44.

Rebecca is here with the forecast - anything spring like to look

:25:45.:25:47.

What a difference a day makes. This picture was taken today in Leak

:25:48.:25:56.

looking over the hills where that reading was taken yesterday. Let me

:25:57.:25:59.

tell you it looks very different to that yesterday. The signs of storm

:26:00.:26:03.

Doris are still there to be seen despite the blue skies. 20 damage

:26:04.:26:08.

left behind. It has been a pleasant end to the day, right away across

:26:09.:26:12.

the region. Look close enough, and you will see the of change. The

:26:13.:26:18.

change tomorrow will be a something a little wet and windy. Not quite as

:26:19.:26:23.

wet and windy as it will be yesterday. We have weather systems

:26:24.:26:27.

lined up waiting to get in. See how tightly packed boat is a buzzing...

:26:28.:26:34.

R. We have got changeable weather to come. Images will fall away

:26:35.:26:40.

initially, but then we will start to see cloud, wind and rain working

:26:41.:26:43.

their way in. Temperatures will lift. Five to seven Celsius,

:26:44.:26:50.

tomorrow morning. Cloudy note early, the rain threatening to work its way

:26:51.:26:54.

in. Trips and drugs of rain. Plenty of cloud, -- a bit of rain.

:26:55.:27:03.

Temperatures coming up to 10 Celsius. As we had through the

:27:04.:27:09.

remainder of tomorrow, you will see that rain band working its way in.

:27:10.:27:14.

It is taking its time. Some mist patches. That breeze will slowly

:27:15.:27:18.

drop out. Temperatures getting down to five to again. By contrast to

:27:19.:27:24.

tomorrow, Sunday is looking good. The best of any brightness is

:27:25.:27:28.

further east. That rain band threatening to work its way down

:27:29.:27:34.

from the north. It is likely we set. We will continue with this pattern

:27:35.:27:37.

with the new working week. Some heavy showers to come, but some

:27:38.:27:41.

brightness. Cake-a-bake? Yeah.

:27:42.:27:46.

What is that? It's like bake a cake,

:27:47.:27:56.

but we flipped it. Oh, my God, we love flipping.

:27:57.:27:58.

Cake-a-bake. Cake-a-baking. I love it.

:27:59.:28:00.

I so love it when this happens.

:28:01.:28:05.
