A man's been found guilty of killing his son, who was only | :00:08. | :00:12.
Daniel Sanzone was today convicted of murdering baby Joshua | :00:13. | :00:16.
by shaking him so violently he caused "catastrophic" | :00:17. | :00:19.
The judge described it as a "tragic and distressing case". | :00:20. | :00:28.
Today, a jury at Birmingham Crown Court also found him guilty | :00:29. | :00:31.
But the baby's mother Zoe Howell was allowed to walk free, | :00:32. | :00:35.
after the jury cleared her of a charge of causing | :00:36. | :00:37.
or allowing her son's death and neglect. | :00:38. | :00:39.
Joshua Millinson was born a bright and healthy baby. | :00:40. | :00:44.
But 13 days later, he suffered catastrophic brain injuries | :00:45. | :00:48.
at the hands of his own father. | :00:49. | :00:51.
It is very difficult to comprehend | :00:52. | :00:53.
and understand Sanzone as a character | :00:54. | :00:57.
and what would lead him to do something so tragic to such a | :00:58. | :01:00.
Here in the lounge of this house, last October, | :01:01. | :01:05.
here in Pendeford, Daniel S`nzone violently shook Joshua leavhng him | :01:06. | :01:09.
with brain injuries so severe, he could no longer hear, | :01:10. | :01:12.
He claimed a loud noise heard that night was not him | :01:13. | :01:18.
injuring his child, he was simply moving the settee | :01:19. | :01:21.
Joshua's mother Zoe Howell had separated from Sanzone | :01:22. | :01:25.
She clutched a baby's toy each day of the trial. | :01:26. | :01:33.
She denied causing or allowhng her baby's death by | :01:34. | :01:35.
effectively turning a blind eye to his violence. | :01:36. | :01:40.
The first year of a child's life is the time in which | :01:41. | :01:43.
they are most vulnerable to becoming | :01:44. | :01:44.
a victim of homicide because young | :01:45. | :01:46.
children of that age are very | :01:47. | :01:48.
demanding, they are very vocal in | :01:49. | :01:49.
terms of their needs and having | :01:50. | :01:50.
And where you have parents who are unwilling or | :01:51. | :01:54.
unable to meet those needs, you have | :01:55. | :01:56.
got a potentially dangerous situation. | :01:57. | :01:59.
Here clutching a brown bag hs Joshua's grandmother Sharon Howell. | :02:00. | :02:03.
And in the recording of a 999 | :02:04. | :02:05.
call, you get a sense of the panic | :02:06. | :02:10.
as she attempted CPR on the lifeless baby. | :02:11. | :02:27.
Joshua Millinson died at Birmingham's Children's | :02:28. | :02:29.
Parents know the difference between right and wrong. | :02:30. | :02:38.
things, making things up, not | :02:39. | :02:40.
attending appointments and those are | :02:41. | :02:42.
all really, really important red | :02:43. | :02:43.
Zoe Howell and Joshua were regularly visited by community midwivds | :02:44. | :02:47.
And they consistently encountered a healthy and alert child. | :02:48. | :02:54.
The parents brought Joshua here to A at New Cross Hospital on | :02:55. | :02:57.
two separate occasions in the days before the shaking incident, | :02:58. | :03:02.
apparently concerned about breathing difficulties and a possible | :03:03. | :03:04.
But a junior doctor examined the baby and found no cause for | :03:05. | :03:09.
concern and the parents then failed to show for a follow-up check. | :03:10. | :03:13.
But the court was told that bone specialists have concluded that | :03:14. | :03:17.
Joshua may have suffered a of fractures before | :03:18. | :03:20.
So could the agencies who c`me into contact with this family | :03:21. | :03:32.
and even entered the house had done anything to prevent Joshua's death? | :03:33. | :03:35.
Ben Godfrey, BBC Midlands Today, Wolverhampton. | :03:36. | :03:40.
Two children and a man have been found dead in a house in Hinckley | :03:41. | :03:44.
Police were called to the house last night. | :03:45. | :03:49.
Our reporter Nicola Beckford is in Hinckley for us now. | :03:50. | :03:51.
Police were called to this house in Welwyn Road at about half p`st nine | :03:52. | :04:06.
yesterday evening, following a disturbance. Negotiators were | :04:07. | :04:08.
brought in and they make contact with a man and a woman inside the | :04:09. | :04:12.
house. What happened next w`s a stand-off and that went on for a | :04:13. | :04:16.
couple of hours until the e`rly hours of the morning. Later, a woman | :04:17. | :04:19.
was found. She was injured `nd she was found. She was injured `nd she | :04:20. | :04:22.
was taken to hospital where she remained in a stable condithon. | :04:23. | :04:27.
Early on, we spoke to the ddtective who is leading the investig`tion. | :04:28. | :04:29.
The officers entered the address and they found a male who h`s been | :04:30. | :04:32.
Tragically, and very traumatically, the officers, on searching the | :04:33. | :04:37.
address, have also found two deceased children. | :04:38. | :04:42.
At this stage, the enquiries are at a very early | :04:43. | :04:47.
stage and we are trying to understand what happened last night | :04:48. | :04:50.
What is the latest tonight? The man has been named locally as | :04:51. | :05:04.
43-year-old David Stokes. The two children are believed to be his | :05:05. | :05:10.
sons, five-year-old Adam and 11-year-old Matthew. The wolan is | :05:11. | :05:14.
believed to be his wife. Now, we don't know how they died so | :05:15. | :05:18.
postmortem will need to be carried out to establish the facts. What we | :05:19. | :05:22.
do know however is that the police state that they are not looking for | :05:23. | :05:26.
anybody else in connection with this tragic incident. Thank you. | :05:27. | :05:30.
A school boy's become a sochal media sensation with his diary | :05:31. | :05:33.
about battling bone cancer `nd he's now hoping followers will crowd fund | :05:34. | :05:37.
potentially life-saving specialist treatment. | :05:38. | :05:42.
Nine year old Alexander who lives on the Warwickshire | :05:43. | :05:44.
Leicestershire border was dhagnosed in June this year. | :05:45. | :05:47.
It's been keeping me from my friends, it's | :05:48. | :05:54.
been making me unable to walk and do fun stuff so they're thinking | :05:55. | :05:57.
about doing a hip replacement which means | :05:58. | :06:02.
I'll be a cyborg and I'll have a robot bone or they'll | :06:03. | :06:05.
do proton beams, like it hits the tumour like a laser | :06:06. | :06:08.
but it won't hurt my leg but it will scar my bone. | :06:09. | :06:21.
More than 100 supporters of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre | :06:22. | :06:25.
have been at a public meeting tonight to try and prevent ht | :06:26. | :06:27.
The BAC O'Connor service in Staffordshire | :06:28. | :06:30.
has been told that council funding will be halved and that one | :06:31. | :06:33.
Campaigners have said tonight that they need to collect more | :06:34. | :06:37.
than 5,000 signatures by thd end of this month to present | :06:38. | :06:39.
A 75-year-old man from Birmhngham's been praised by police for fighting | :06:40. | :06:43.
off a gang who tried to steal his car in a dark tunnel. | :06:44. | :06:46.
Anthony Mathers was thrown to the ground and suffered cuts | :06:47. | :06:48.
and bruises in the incident, the start of which was caught on camera. | :06:49. | :06:52.
He was threatened with a knhfe and imitation gun, but, | :06:53. | :06:55.
as Giles Latcham reports, he was in no mood to give in. | :06:56. | :06:59.
Anthony Mathers was on a routine trip to | :07:00. | :07:03.
On his way, a tunnel he has driven through thousands of | :07:04. | :07:09.
times but then up ahead, a menacing figure loomed into view. | :07:10. | :07:12.
I didn't even think at the time what they were after. | :07:13. | :07:23.
But it soon became clear, it was his Ford S-Max. | :07:24. | :07:25.
The 75-year-old was bundled from the vehicle. | :07:26. | :07:29.
The other one pulled a knifd and my | :07:30. | :07:31.
reaction to that was, if you come close to me, | :07:32. | :07:34.
That I think if one of them had come near me, I | :07:35. | :07:44.
The robbers did drive off briefly but stalled the car | :07:45. | :07:58.
at the top of the road allowing Mr Mathers time to catch up | :07:59. | :08:01.
I mean, I am 75, I did my bdst and apparently it worked. | :08:02. | :08:06.
The police say they are takhng this incident | :08:07. | :08:09.
extremely seriously, officers are patrolling | :08:10. | :08:11.
A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. | :08:12. | :08:15.
Detectives are looking for two more suspects, all | :08:16. | :08:17.
described as in their late teens and of Asian appearance. | :08:18. | :08:21.
Normally we advise people not to fight back in | :08:22. | :08:24.
those circumstances but Anthony acted very bravely, very heroically | :08:25. | :08:29.
to maintain control of his vehicle and to prevent them from | :08:30. | :08:32.
The former Land Rover worker paid a price | :08:33. | :08:43.
though, thrown to the ground three times before he wrestled his keys | :08:44. | :08:46.
from the robbers but he says he would do it all again. | :08:47. | :08:48.
People at my age are entitldd to a quiet life. | :08:49. | :08:51.
They don't deserve people coming up to them, trying to get their | :08:52. | :08:57.
Mr Mathers is grateful to three women | :08:58. | :09:04.

A snake that gave a couple ` shock when it appeared in their ndwly | :09:13. | :09:16.
purchased car and then disappeared has been recovered four days later. | :09:17. | :09:20.
Claire Brealey and her partner Gavin Reed became aware of the snake | :09:21. | :09:23.
when it wrapped around their dog's legs as they drove home on the M5 | :09:24. | :09:26.
It was finally found behind a piece of plastic panelling and has now | :09:27. | :09:30.
Funnily enough, I found a couple of things on the front of my c`r | :09:31. | :09:45.
yesterday. It turned out to be the windscreen wipers. | :09:46. | :09:46.
And that's about all from the late team. | :09:47. | :09:48.
We'll be back from six in the morning during BBC Breakfast. | :09:49. | :09:51.
For now I'll leave you with the weather from Rebecca. | :09:52. | :09:53.
How on earth do I follow th`t? It was a stunning day to day and we | :09:54. | :09:58.
have ended up with some stunning scenery tonight. It has been a | :09:59. | :10:01.
glorious evening for many places, lots of lovely sunsets. As we head | :10:02. | :10:05.
into tomorrow, but of a change on the way. Still going to be puite | :10:06. | :10:08.
cold but we've got some clotd and we are likely to see some rain as we | :10:09. | :10:12.
had through the day. High-pressure managing to hold on for a lhttle | :10:13. | :10:15.
longer keeping things settldd. But we stuck to the best weather system | :10:16. | :10:19.
working in its way. It is good is picking up the cloud and brhng with | :10:20. | :10:23.
it a bit of rain. Tonight, high pressure in charge. Close p`l and | :10:24. | :10:27.
the winds have dropped. We `re likely to see our temperatures | :10:28. | :10:31.
plummeting. We are starting to see some places dipping below freezing. | :10:32. | :10:34.
It is going to continue to fall away. Some chilly spots. Telpters | :10:35. | :10:38.
below freezing in some placds and some frost to come tomorrow. We | :10:39. | :10:43.
start the day cold and frosty. It will be great to begin with. Some | :10:44. | :10:48.
brighter spells. The car picking up, working its way in from the north | :10:49. | :10:51.
and west and there will be some patchy rain lifting upwards. 10 | :10:52. | :10:55.
Celsius and in the back row, perhaps not feeling as pleasant as ht did | :10:56. | :10:59.
today. More information on that and a look ahead at the weekend in the | :11:00. | :11:02.
national forecast. Here's the outlook for | :11:03. | :11:02.
not stop the temperature is coming up to around 12. Mick Miller has the | :11:03. | :11:05.
national picture. The weather may have turned colder | :11:06. | :11:16.
but for many of us today there was abundant sunshine. This is from the | :11:17. | :11:19.
end of the day from Oxfordshire Cold and clear by day and clear and | :11:20. | :11:25.
even colder overnight. That is the recipe at this time of year. | :11:26. | :11:30.
Widespread ground frost setting in. Parts of East Anglia already below | :11:31. | :11:36.
freezing. In western Scotland, temperatures may stabilise. It could | :11:37. | :11:37.
even go up | :11:38. | :11:38. |
