Police are continuing to qudstion a nurse this evening who's bedn

re`arrested in connection whth an investigation into the poisoning of

patients at Stockport's main hospital. Victorino Chua was

detained by officers at his home in the town early this morning. Police

have been investigating the deaths of patients at Stepping Hill

Hospital whose drips were contaminated in 2011.

It was 6:30 this morning whdn officers from Greater Manchdster

Police arrived at Victorino Chua's terrace house in Stockport. Quarter

of an hour later, Mr Chua w`s led to a waiting police van before being

led away to be interviewed. He has been on bail since he was arrested

in 2012 and was due to answdr that bail next week. But, it is

understood that his re`arrest follows the emergence of new

evidence in an investigation that has lasted for more than three

years. Greater Manchester Police tell us:

Staff at Stepping Hill raisdd the alarm after noticing unexpl`ined low

blood sugar levels in patients in the summer of 2011.

Eight patients who were poisoned by contaminated products later died.

The deaths of three of them, Tracey Arden, Alfred Weaver and Arnold

Lancaster, are being treated as murder. Police say that say line

drips were contaminated with insulin at the hospital. Prior to Mr Chua's

arrest, nurse Rebecca Leighton spent six weeks in prison before being

cleared for poisoning alleg`tions. All charges were dropped, btt

was sacked after admitting stealing drugs from the hospital.

Since 2011, additional security measures have been put in place here

at Stepping Hill Hospital and they are among the most stringent in the

country. There is CCTV in most treatment rooms. Two nurses will now

administer insulin and intr`venous drugs on the wards, and mobhle

security patrols take place within the hospital grounds.

An inquest in Kendal has he`rd how a man was swept away a river hn in

Ambleside. The body of Simon Martindale, who was 48 and from Hest

Bank in Lancashire, was found shortly afterwards floating in

Windermere. The South Lakes coroner Ian Smith ruled his death w`s an

accident. Work on the second Mersey crossing

at Runcorn will begin next lonth. Halton Council and the consortium

behind the project say they've managed to make savings of ?250

million on the original budget of ?2 billion. The bridge should be

completed by autumn 2017. A man who killed his mother and

sister with an axe just two days after being sent home from ` mental

health unit has been sentenced to life imprisonment. John Jenkin, from

Millom in Cumbria, must serve a minimum of 12 years and stax at

Ashworth High Securiy Hospital for treatment. Stuart Pollitt w`s in

court. In a matter of minutes, John Jenkin

hacked his closest family to death. First, he killed his mother,

58`year`old Alice McMeekin, before turning on his sister Katie Jenkin.

Both an axe.

The words do not exist to ddscribe our feelings of loss. Alice and

Katie will always be missed and fondly remembered by all who knew

them. Life for us will never be as it was.

But could and should John Jdnkin have been stopped? On June six last

year, he told a passer`by hd would kill his mother, before attdmpting

suicide in a country park. Police took him to Furness General

Hospital's mental health unht, but a 90 minute assessment declardd him a

low risk to others and he w`s sent back to the family home. 36 hours

later, he killed his mother, sister and the family dog. He confdssed to

nurses, later saying "I killed them with an axe, I lost control." John

Jenkin already pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of

diminished responsibility. He will be treated in Ashworth Hosphtal

home to the likes of Moors lurderer Ian Brady, before doctors are

satisfied that he can be tr`nsferred to prison.

This is a particularly traghc case and it has left the friends and

family of Alice and Katie devastated. I think this case will

have a lasting effect on evdryone involved.

The central question is how and why John Jenkin was allowed to be sent

home from a mental health assessment unit two days before he carried out

the killings. That is the stbject of an internal review and a dolestic

homicide review. But today, Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust stood by the

decision of the staff at thd time, saying that the assessment conducted

was thorough and the steps taken appropriate

The Championship's biggest latch of the season takes place tomorrow when

second place Burnley host top of the table Leicester City. The Clarets

are undefeated in 16 games, while their opponents remain unbe`ten in

18. A win for Burnley by three clear goals could see them go to the top.

points to 16. And sales have narrowly won at Bath
