For the first time, the former Chancellor George Osborne has | :00:13. | :00:15.
admitted he made mistakes before the Brexit vote, which led | :00:16. | :00:18.
to his dramatic departure from Downing Street. | :00:19. | :00:20.
The Tatton MP says he misread the public mood because he didn't | :00:21. | :00:23.
fully understand how alienated people feel from | :00:24. | :00:26.
Almost four months on from that historic vote, he's been speaking | :00:27. | :00:31.
to our political reporter in Cheshire, Phil McCann. | :00:32. | :00:35.
Out of Downing Street and back in the community. | :00:36. | :00:38.
Since leaving government in July, George Osborne has been able | :00:39. | :00:41.
to consider why the Remain message just didn't persuade so many | :00:42. | :00:45.
ordinary working people during the EU referendum campaign. | :00:46. | :00:49.
He's had to get to get used to life as a constituency MP | :00:50. | :00:53.
You know, it gives you time to think about life, | :00:54. | :01:00.
think about what you're going to do for the community you represent, | :01:01. | :01:03.
think about mistakes I've made and how we can put them right. | :01:04. | :01:06.
You can't talk about mistakes you've made without me asking '"what do | :01:07. | :01:09.
I don't think I properly understood the sense that people had | :01:10. | :01:15.
in many communities, particularly in the North of | :01:16. | :01:20.
England, that they were completely disconnected from the system, | :01:21. | :01:23.
from the way our country was governed. | :01:24. | :01:25.
Sometimes the statistics can mask economic insecurity out there that | :01:26. | :01:29.
Mr Osborne has not withdrawn his predictions that Brexit would cause | :01:30. | :01:36.
But as he tries to explain his past mistakes, his future | :01:37. | :01:41.
The Tatton constituency he's represented since 2001 | :01:42. | :01:47.
is disappearing if boundary changes are approved. | :01:48. | :01:50.
But he wants to stay in Cheshire, meaning he'll have to battle | :01:51. | :01:55.
neighbouring Tories for a seat to stand in. | :01:56. | :01:56.
The communities don't disappear, they're still here, and I'm | :01:57. | :01:59.
going to absolutely be determined to represent a Cheshire constituency | :02:00. | :02:03.
at the next general election and then of course it'll be up | :02:04. | :02:07.
to the people of Cheshire whether they want me. | :02:08. | :02:09.
And as for whether George Osborne one day be back at the cabinet table | :02:10. | :02:13.
in Downing Street - he hasn't ruled it out, | :02:14. | :02:15.

When Andy Davies was told he had multiple sclerosis, | :03:43. | :03:47.
it was a devastating blow.But To be told you have a life changing | :03:48. | :03:50.
But to then be told by your boss, you no longer have a job, | :03:51. | :03:55.
just adds to the stress. And some bosses are breaking the law | :03:56. | :03:57.
by needlessly discriminating against workers because | :03:58. | :04:00.
Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has been to Liverpool to meet one | :04:01. | :04:05.
When IT consultant Andy Davies was first diagnosed with multiple | :04:06. | :04:12.
sclerosis, his employers couldn't have been more supportive. | :04:13. | :04:16.
Things started to change when I tried to return back to work. | :04:17. | :04:22.
They said they would need to offer me a new contract. | :04:23. | :04:25.
It was a vastly reduced salary and no sick pay. | :04:26. | :04:30.
I had a lot of benefits before and I couldn't understand why | :04:31. | :04:33.
Then what happened, they said that I needed to attend a medical. | :04:34. | :04:42.
The doctor's report concluded he wasn't fit to work. | :04:43. | :04:46.
That was followed by a letter from his employers | :04:47. | :04:48.
Let's be clear, obviously your medical condition meant you had | :04:49. | :04:52.
You couldn't carry on exactly as you did before but you were still | :04:53. | :04:57.
convinced you could do the job you were employed to do? | :04:58. | :04:59.
I wrote to my employer way before this to say this is what I believe | :05:00. | :05:04.
I could do as a job going forward, which was not far from | :05:05. | :05:07.
And it seems that Andy's experiences are far from unique. | :05:08. | :05:11.
According to research carried out by the MS society, who spoke | :05:12. | :05:13.
to more than 1000 people who have the condition, | :05:14. | :05:18.
around a quarter said they felt mistreated by their employers | :05:19. | :05:22.
and around one fifth said they had been badly treated | :05:23. | :05:24.
He took his old employers to an employment tribunal | :05:25. | :05:32.
and won his case for unfair dismissal and discrimination. | :05:33. | :05:35.
He was awarded ?83,000 but said he eventually had to settle | :05:36. | :05:38.
for just ?66,000 of that, another example he says of how | :05:39. | :05:43.
the system is often weighted against people like him. | :05:44. | :05:47.
