A woman's appeared in court charged with the murder of a man

:00:12.:00:15.

who was stabbed to death in St Helens.

:00:16.:00:18.

29-year-old Mireslaw Kowalczuk died from a single stab wound

:00:19.:00:21.

Karolina Rutkowska has been remanded in custody and will face

:00:22.:00:27.

Sales of raw milk from a Cumbrian farm have been suspended

:00:28.:00:34.

Lancashire Police are looking for this man who was caught

:00:35.:00:37.

on camera stealing three charity boxes from a restaurant

:00:38.:00:39.

They were taken from Waheed's on Randal Street

:00:40.:00:42.

He came in through the front door and also stole a laptop.

:00:43.:00:46.

Some of the world's top showjumpers and their horses

:00:47.:00:48.

are making their way to Liverpool for the opening of the city's

:00:49.:00:51.

International Horse Show tomorrow, the biggest event

:00:52.:00:53.

Stuart Pollitt went along to find out more.

:00:54.:00:58.

From the biggest names in showjumping to the smallest

:00:59.:01:00.

Shetland pony, the Echo Arena has been transformed into a mecca

:01:01.:01:03.

Among the competitors are the UK's number one rider,

:01:04.:01:10.

Scott Brash and no fewer than six members of the famous

:01:11.:01:13.

It's great to be here in Liverpool with all the family

:01:14.:01:19.

and especially at this time of year, yeah.

:01:20.:01:21.

The first year that it was on, I think Nina and all the team did

:01:22.:01:25.

a fantastic job creating a top show in the North, which is

:01:26.:01:29.

The big stars start competing tomorrow.

:01:30.:01:31.

Today's opening session was a chance for amateur riders

:01:32.:01:34.

like Sophie Bowen-Howard from Lancashire to

:01:35.:01:35.

When you're in there it's not as bad but leading up to it, it's like,

:01:36.:01:41.

my heart is like constantly going like that but I really enjoy

:01:42.:01:44.

We travel a couple of hours every other weekend up and down

:01:45.:01:49.

the country but to have one in the North is really good.

:01:50.:01:52.

The Echo Arena has undergone a major transformation to host this event.

:01:53.:01:56.

And not just here in the arena, where they have specially designed

:01:57.:01:59.

fences and the special surface laid out, but out the back as well.

:02:00.:02:02.

Part of the car park has now become a make-shift stable block

:02:03.:02:05.

with around 100 horses being stored here over the next few days.

:02:06.:02:09.

It's something different for the city of Liverpool,

:02:10.:02:11.

who of course have an equestrian heritage.

:02:12.:02:13.

We have the Grand National based down the road at Aintree.

:02:14.:02:15.

We have got nine or ten riders coming over from Europe,

:02:16.:02:18.

so they will be on their way now, so they take this really seriously.

:02:19.:02:22.

It's a big deal, it's top sport and there will be lots of people

:02:23.:02:25.

viewing from around the world on the live streaming.

:02:26.:02:28.

The main events last for three days, starting tomorrow.

:02:29.:02:30.

Stuart Pollitt, BBC Northwest Tonight, Liverpool.

:02:31.:02:35.

Now, you will have have heard of famous artists

:02:36.:02:37.

But do you recognise the name of Wynford Dewhurst?

:02:38.:02:41.

The largely unknown artist was born in Manchester in the 19th century

:02:42.:02:45.

and an exhibition of his work is currently showing in the city.

:02:46.:02:48.

Well, we saw this was a Manchester artist but to be honest

:02:49.:02:55.

with you although I'd heard that name, I didn't really

:02:56.:02:58.

I hadn't heard of Wynford Dewhurst before.

:02:59.:03:02.

The Manchester Art Gallery has opened an exhibition,

:03:03.:03:09.

which showcases a collection of the finest works

:03:10.:03:16.

by the Manchester-born writer and artist dubbed

:03:17.:03:18.

Dewhurst's works were heavily influenced by one of the founders

:03:19.:03:22.

Everybody who truly loves Manchester really should be very,

:03:23.:03:28.

Not only was he born and raised here, he held a lifelong

:03:29.:03:35.

Dewhurst is most famous for his 1908 work, The Picnic.

:03:36.:03:42.

This is the artist in 1908, at the very peak of his powers.

:03:43.:03:46.

He is expressing his vision in probably his most complete way

:03:47.:03:51.

and many people do see this as his finest work.

:03:52.:03:55.

He originally trained in the legal profession but after showing

:03:56.:04:03.

artistic flair and after a number of his paintings were published

:04:04.:04:06.

in local journals, he decided to become a painter.

:04:07.:04:10.

And he was quite a controversial character in that he devised

:04:11.:04:13.

a theory that the art movement, Impressionism, first

:04:14.:04:16.

Dewhurst outlines in his theory that Impressionism wasn't French

:04:17.:04:23.

in origin but it was British and he names specifically

:04:24.:04:25.

John Constable and J M W Turner, two of the greatest landscape

:04:26.:04:28.

artists in history, obviously British.

:04:29.:04:33.

Whatever the case, Dewhurst's talent certainly speaks for itself.

:04:34.:04:37.

Manchester's Monet is on until April.

:04:38.:04:40.

Deena Campbell, BBC Northwest Tonight, Manchester.

:04:41.:04:46.

It is very nearly New Year's Eve, which means time to find out who's

:04:47.:04:49.

Amongst those in the North West, Ken Dodd.

:04:50.:04:53.

The 89-year-old entertainer from Knotty Ash becomes Sir Ken Dodd

:04:54.:04:57.

in recognition of his services to charity and show business.

:04:58.:05:00.

Catch tomorrow's North West tonight for more on others

:05:01.:05:03.

Sport and in the Premier League this evening.

:05:04.:05:08.

Everton remain seventh in the table but are six points behind sixth

:05:09.:05:13.

placed Manchester United, having played a game more.

:05:14.:05:18.

Let's get a look ahead to the weather for New Year's Eve.

:05:19.:05:21.

Well, the end of 2016 and the start of 2017,

:05:22.:05:26.

Tomorrow, it should be relatively mild, largely cloudy,

:05:27.:05:31.

However, on New Year's Day, temperatures take a real tumble.

:05:32.:05:34.

It is going to be a cold start to the New Year.

:05:35.:05:37.

In between those days, we have a line of rain

:05:38.:05:40.

that is going to work its way through and may well dampen people's

:05:41.:05:43.

A few spots of drizzle are in the wind as we speak

:05:44.:05:47.

but for the most part it is a dry night.

:05:48.:05:50.

There will be a couple of breaks here and there but for the most part

:05:51.:05:53.

the temperatures are very good indeed, between 7 and even

:05:54.:05:56.

So, for New Year's Eve, it's a decent enough sort of day.

:05:57.:06:00.

It is very mild, there will be a lot of cloud cover,

:06:01.:06:02.

which breaks from time to time to allow some good

:06:03.:06:05.

In terms of the numbers, 9 and 10 Celsius and look

:06:06.:06:08.

at the line of rain that comes through for New Year's Eve,

:06:09.:06:11.

making midnight rather wet for most places.

:06:12.:06:15.

That is it from me for now and in fact for 2016. I will be back in

:06:16.:06:23.

2017. Alex will be here tomorrow. I hope you can join her then. In the

:06:24.:06:24.

meantime, happy New Year. Good evening. Looking ahead to 2017

:06:25.:06:42.

it looks like we will start off on a cold note. This weather front will

:06:43.:06:45.

move south in the next day or so bringing rain with it, but also much

:06:46.:06:50.

colder air following a lull behind. It will sweep the fog away. It's

:06:51.:06:53.

grey for

:06:54.:06:54.
