09/08/2014 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. It's that time of day where we take a longer look at the weather,

we go beyond the usual five-day period

and peek at what the six-to-ten-day period has in store for us.

But we'll start with Saturday

and, for many, after today's thunderstorms,

it's going to be a vast improvement,

with a lot of dry, bright and breezy weather

across most parts of the United Kingdom.

Having said that, it's not going to be dry for all of us

because, in the Northern Isles, it's going to be quite wet and windy

But for the bulk of the mainland,

there are good spells of sunshine to be found.

That's certainly the case in Eastern Scotland.

Western Scotland may pick up a few showers

but they're few and far between.

A lovely, dry afternoon in Northern England, 20-odd degrees.

Bright and breezy.

More cloud as you get into East Anglia and the Southeast.

In spite of the extra cloud,

I suspect most places will stay fine and dry.

And pleasantly warm, at 23 or so degrees.

That will be tempered somewhat by the breeze.

The breeze is more noticeable in the Southwest -

temperatures are lower here.

More cloud around and the chance of a few showers.

The showers should move through quickly on the breeze.

The showers themselves are fairly few and far between.

Much of Wales sees some good spells of sunshine,

bright and breezy for the most part, just the odd shower.

Northern Ireland could be a focal point for some more frequent showers.

As we get onto the evening, we start to look towards the South and west

because the rain is going to be turning heavier and heavier

and we could well see some quite heavy rain by dawn on Sunday.

And, further North,

we have got a scattering of showers across many parts of the UK.

But it's all eyes towards the South and the West

because this area of rain, several days ago,

was a hurricane on the other side of the Atlantic.

As it's come across the Atlantic,

it's gone through a considerable transition

and now it's just an Atlantic low.

It is set to bring some wet and windy weather

across many parts of the UK during the day on Sunday.

Some heavy rain working its way North through the morning,

it covers much of England, Wales,

and it eventually gets towards the East of Scotland.

Into the afternoon, it does dry up in the South

and temperatures get up to 21 or 22 degrees.

But it will be quite windy, particularly around those coasts,

it will be gusting up to around 50 or 60 miles an hour.

And I expect we will see some fairly considerable impacts

from all of this on Sunday.

One-two inches of rain,

gusts of wind of 50-60 miles an hour around the coast

and also around the coast, we've large waves and high tides -

we have to throw that into the mix.

Now, on Monday, the driving low moves its weight ever Northwards,

up into the Northern North Sea,

so wet and windy conditions will be rotating around that,

getting into the North of Scotland.

Elsewhere, it is a windy day with sunny spells

but also some fairly frequent showers.

Now, that same low is still driving our weather

through Monday night and on into Tuesday.

The wind's coming around it,

so it's a West or Northwesterly wind on Tuesday

and it will be quite a strong West or Northwesterly wind.

A lot of showers again on Tuesday.

Most of the showers will be in the North and West

and a few will get towards the Eastern side.

Temperatures beginning to struggle,

maybe only 16 degrees in the North and West of the UK.

Into the middle of the week and, if anything,

those isobars get a little bit tighter,

so the winds even stronger from the West or Northwest again on Wednesday.

And, again, it is a showery sort of look to things.

Most of the showers on Wednesday

will be in the North and the West of the UK.

Down towards the South and the East, probably a bit drier

but you can't rule out the odd shower getting across,

given the strength of the winds.

Now, the six-to-ten-day period -

that low is still to the North or Northeast of the United Kingdom

and it's still driving these West or Northwesterly winds across the UK.

And the winds will be a key feature of this period

because the winds will be much stronger

than you expect for this time of the year.

It will bring a cool feel to things as well.

I think daytime temperatures will be struggling, a bit below average.

There will be some chilly nights as well.

Overall, it looks unsettled, with sunshine and showers.

Most of the showers in the North and West.
