09/09/2014 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello - time to take a look at the next five days' worth of weather,

then we take a peek beyond that into the six to ten-day period

to see what the general trends are in the longer term.

Short-term, a cold start to the day on Tuesday,

with patches of mist and fog.

That should lift through the morning.

Into the afternoon, it looks pretty good

across pretty much all parts of the UK.

Might see a spot of rain

for the Northern and Western Isles of Scotland.

For much of the mainland, some cloud in the North,

but doing well temperature-wise -

16 or so degrees in Inverness, 17 in Glasgow,

and I think we should see sunny spells

through the Central Lowlands.

Across to Northern England, it's sunny spells

through the afternoon, some warmth -

19-20 degrees in Leeds.

We should be into the low 20s quite widely

across the Southern counties of England.

Again, patchy cloud and sunny spells.

Light winds, too, and with temperatures

in the low 20s, quite a pleasant feel to things

right down towards Cornwall and Devon.

Across Wales as well,

light winds, sunny spells,

temperatures into the low 20s,

though around Cardigan Bay,

it's more like the upper teens -

still, a decent day, here,

as it will be in Northern Ireland.

Again, patchy cloud, sunny spells

and 18 or so degrees in Belfast.

Light winds, too,

so a pleasant feel to things

pretty much across the board.

Through the evening, overnight, I think

the cloud will tend to melt away.

We'll see clear spells again,

some mist and fog forming in a few places.

Major towns and cities holding up

at around ten or 11 degrees.

In rural spots, it will go well into single figures.

Again, a chilly start to the day on Wednesday

but it should be another decent day.

We're firmly under this area of high pressure,

drifting a little further northwards.

That allows the breeze to pick up a little

on the South coast.

Apart from that, we'll have a pretty decent day.

I think there will be a lot of cloud around central and Eastern areas.

That cloud, drifting in from the North Sea.

It'll be a bit cloudy here, but move further West,

break up the cloud, some spells of sunshine,

20 degrees with some sunny spells in Glasgow

and 20 degrees with some cloud in London.

Again, into Thursday, this area of high pressure

is still with us but it is tending

to drift away towards the North,

but it'll influence our weather

through the latter part of the week,

keeping things essentially fine and settled.

May well be a fair bit of cloud associated with that -

again, central and Eastern parts will be fairly cloudy,

but even under that, I think it will be bright enough.

Maybe some early mist and fog in some spots,

but, again, many Western areas, some parts of the North,

enjoying a pretty decent day.

The high is still with us towards the end of the week,

keeping fronts well to the North and West of us,

and it keeps this area of low pressure well to the South.

But the low is trying to creep its way in.

It doesn't really have any influence

on our weather during Friday.

It'll be another day of variable cloud, sunny spells.

Where you get the sunshine, it's pleasantly warm

because winds are mostly fairly light,

though the breeze picks up a little

towards the start of the weekend.

Still, we're keeping this low at bay,

though it is creeping a bit closer towards our shores.

Again, on Saturday,

it's variable cloud, sunny spells,

into the low 20s.

Where you get the sunshine, it's very pleasant,

but underneath the cloud,

I suppose, a little bit disappointing.

What happens beyond then? Does the high stick around?

Some models actually keep the high across our shores,

which will bring some fine weather, but the preferred solution

is for the high to retreat, pressure falls,

then things are set to turn that bit more unsettled.

So, it looks as if we'll see that high drift away towards

the North and East,

then that big low on the Southwest approaches,

it'll just creep its way towards our shores,

so that'll bring increasing winds, increasing amounts of cloud,

and eventually, we'll begin to see some rain.
