Hello. We're anticipating some significant changes | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
with the weather patterns as we go through weekend | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
and the early part of next week. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
More on that in just a moment. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
First of all, there's one more day of September left, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
which has been a very dry month, and a pretty warm month, too. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
And there'll be more fine weather across the bulk of the UK | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
during Tuesday. In the West, though, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
there is a weather front making for a damp day for Northern Ireland, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
and outbreaks of rain slowly trickling across Western Scotland. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
The Western Isles may brighten up late in the day, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
and we won't see too much rain - generally dry and bright | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
across the far Northeast, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
but a damp evening rush hour for Glasgow. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
Dull and damp for most of the day in Northern Ireland, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
but, particularly in the West, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
it might brighten up a little in the afternoon, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
as that rain trickles across the Irish Sea | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
towards Cumbria and Lancashire. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
For the bulk of England, though, it's a fine day. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Could start a bit misty, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
small chance of a shower in the Southeast, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
but in the sunny spells it'll be warm again with highs of 21. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
That rain, though, does trickle into Devon, Cornwall and Wales | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
through the late afternoon, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
and the outbreaks of rain become more extensive | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
across England and Wales during the night. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Another weather front will bring rain back to the Northwest | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
through the night as well. It's not going to be a cold night - | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
again, Tuesday night sees temperatures staying in the teens | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
in most towns and cities. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
Into Wednesday, then, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
we've got a couple of weather fronts pushing slowly Southwards - | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
one bringing patchy rain and drizzle across Southern areas, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
one clearing away from Scotland and Northern Ireland, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
actually, here, for the bulk of the day, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
there'll be spells of sunshine. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
That rain slowly edging into Northern England and North Wales. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Between those two weather systems, a bit of brightness, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
still quite mild in the South, 20 degrees. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Despite some sunshine, a fresher feel further North. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
High pressure is still the dominant feature | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
through Wednesday night, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
getting rid of those weather fronts, but areas of low pressure | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
are starting to gather out in the Atlantic. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
That will eventually bring some rain into the far Northwest | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
late on Thursday, but, for most, high pressure still with us on Thursday. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Another dry day. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:50
Cold start across Northern Britain. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
By the afternoon, temperatures back in the mid teens, or perhaps, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
in the South, up to 20 Celsius. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Now, the more significant changes start to happen on Friday | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
and Saturday - an active weather front driving South is bringing | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
some heavy rain, and the isobars are really pinching together, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
so the wind's starting to pick up, too. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
A wet and a windy day for parts of Scotland, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Northern Ireland, Northern England and Wales. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
That rain may linger in some places and could cause a few problems. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
Further South, still dry and still mild at this stage, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
but the weather front will drive across all areas | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
as we go into the weekend, it looks like. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
So, a spell of heavy rain for all of us, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and also, as that weather front moves through, it's a cold front, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
so much fresher conditions following on behind. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
Blustery, with some sunshine. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
So, a change of type of our weather as we go through the weekend. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
Why the change? | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
Well, it's all to do with the jet stream - | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
that fast-moving ribbon of air high up in the atmosphere. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
For most of September, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
the jet stream has been to the North of the UK, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
and it's the jet stream that drives areas of low pressure. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
So, mostly, through September, the low pressure systems, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
which bring the wind and the rain, have been to the North of the UK. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
But next week the jet stream is driving South across the UK, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
which means the low pressure systems will follow, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
and they'll be spreading wind and spells of rain across the UK. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
So, scenes like this will become more familiar. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
Yes, you will need your umbrellas again - | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
the leaves will start to come off the trees more rapidly, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
because we will see those changes. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
It'll feel fresher, as well - | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
temperatures will still be around average, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
but because we've been above average for so long, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
it will feel cooler, and there'll be spells of wind and rain. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
And we'll continue to bring you the details | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
here and online. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30
'Two minutes left, bakers!' | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
I think I've overdone it with the pistachios | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
and somehow, the custard's split, but it's too late! | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Paul told me not to under-bake it. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
He's going to have a field day! | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Ian's representation of the evils | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46 |
