Hello. First, congratulations | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
and thank you to all of you who joined Weather Watchers, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
the new BBC interactive website. And that helps us to illustrate | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
the story a little better. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Now, just to prove the point, this was yesterday in North Yorkshire, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
where the fog lingered all day. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
But a few hundred miles south, it was a different story. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
In London, you could hardly see out of the window in the morning, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
the rain was so heavy, and pretty miserable with it. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Unfortunately, that wet theme | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
is likely to be the story for the next six to ten-day period. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
We will start off with some wet weather out to the west on Thursday, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
the winds a significant feature as well, gales on exposed coasts, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
and the rain continues to push its way steadily north and east. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
Perhaps the far north-east of Scotland staying dry and bright, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
and, albeit cloudy, largely dry in the south-east corner. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
And mild again - 12 to 16 degrees the high. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
It's November 5th as well, so for the firework displays | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
in the evening, it'll be a wet affair as the rain moves east, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
and then clearing behind, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
the next batch of wet and windy weather pushes in. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Gales up into the far north are likely, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
the heaviest of the rain here as well. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
As the rain clears through, at least it's mild again, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
but rather cloudy. 13 to 17 degrees the overall high. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
We barely get a chance to catch our breath into the weekend | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
before the next area of low pressure starts to push in from the Atlantic, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
and you can see by the brighter, vivid colours | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
there really will be some heavy rain for a time, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
and again, the winds are going to be a significant feature. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
So for outdoor plans on Saturday, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
could be a fairly soggy one, I'm afraid, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
particularly in the north, where rain will linger all day, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
turning to showers behind it into the south. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
Moving out of Saturday night, I think there'll be too much of a breeze | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
for fog to be an issue, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
and the cloud already gathering, and we do it all again on Sunday. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
Can you believe this? So starting off dry and bright in the east, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
the heaviest of the rain and the strongest of the winds | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
look likely to be into the far north. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
But again, those temperatures are pretty promising. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
They should be around 10 or 11 degrees at this time of year. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
What a surprise - by Monday we've still got tightly packed isobars, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
still the winds very much a feature, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
and still plenty of rain to come in the forecast. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
I can hear you saying, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
"What on earth is happening to the weather at the moment?" | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
Yet again, the heaviest of the rain is likely to be up in the north-west, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
somewhat drier and milder down into the south-east corner. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
So why, I hear you cry? | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Well, what a surprise - it's all due to the jet stream, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
which is changing position, and it's strengthening. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
There's a kink developing in the jet stream, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and that's directing its attention right across the UK. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
We're in Strictly mode at the moment, so we can use the analogy | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
that actually, this kink, the jet stream's found its hip action, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
and actually it's a hot Latin that's pushing these low pressures | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
right across the UK. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
I'm desperately trying to find some humour | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
in this pretty miserable story. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
The wind's coming from a south-westerly direction, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
always dragging in that milder air, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
but it will be wet and windy at times. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
It certainly does look as though, as we move into | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
that six to ten-day period, so into next week, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
the heaviest of the rain, the strongest of the winds | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
looks likely to be across the northern half of the UK. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
Plenty of leaves coming down off the trees. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
But further south, there will still be some rain around, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
but not as intense, and again, the winds perhaps not quite as strong. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
But still fairly cloudy, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
and still fairly miserable. Take care. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
